Letters from Liz I hope you are as excited about our upcoming Girl Scout year as I am! All of our programs and events have been planned not only to bring you a wide variety of adventures to choose from, but also with your safety in mind. Our council has carefully planned them with the ability to shift immediately to a hybrid or virtual event, if the need arises.

So many of you enjoyed our summer Gathering at Ceremony Island series that we are delighted to hold our fall Gathering at Ceremony Island series. This free, 9-part virtual series features three activities related to STEM (science, technology, engineering and math), Outdoor, and Life Skills pillars. The experiences are fun and include quick try-it activities.

You’ll be able to connect with sister Girl Scouts while you participate.

For Daisies and Brownies, we are holding two 3-part “Think Like A” series this fall. Participating Girl Scouts will earn the Think Like an Engineer badge for their Girl Scout level! Juniors and Cadettes will earn their Think Like a Programmer badge and more during a 14-part “Let's Code!” series.

Our nation just celebrated the 100th anniversary of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution, granting women the right to vote! With the right to vote comes the responsibility to be civically engaged and exercise that right. At our “Your Voice Counts” event on October 3, Brownies through Ambassadors will learn the importance of and how to use their voice to make change. We have a great lineup of community leaders who will speak about the importance of staying informed in today’s society.

Despite everything that is happening this year, our council is making sure that Girl Scouting doesn’t stop! Please be sure to stay abreast with updates posted on our Girl Scout website and our social media channels.

2020 LEGACY PEARLS HONOREES Jane Pracht Lambertz - In Memoriam Jane Pracht Lambertz was born in Wichita, Kansas in 1921. She began her love affair with all things Girl Scouts when she joined the organization in her youth. She reminisced fondly of her many scouting activities, and maintained a special affection for The Girl Scout Little House. Her life epitomized the Girl Scout motto “Do a good turn daily” and was characterized by her “can do” attitude.

She graduated from St. Mary’s Cathedral High School, Wichita, and attended Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, Kansas, and University of Texas, Austin. After the United States entered WWII, Jane returned

to work at Beech Aircraft as a secretary in the Administrative Offices.

She married Vern Lambertz on November 27, 1947 with whom she raised a son and two daughters. All of whom were active in scouting. Jane was a Cub Scout Pack Leader and assistant Girl Scout Leader as her children became involved.

Her passion for scouting led her to leadership activities on the Board of Directors of the Wichita Area Girl Scout Council (WAGSC) from 1959-1969, serving as Cookie Sale Chair (1960, 1961 & 1962). Cookie Sales “topped all previous records in WAGSC” in 1960, and this trend continued each year that Jane chaired Cookie Sales.

Jane was a devout Catholic, active in the Altar Society at Church of the Magdalen.

She was a member of the Delta Rho Sigma Sorority, Beta Chapter, serving as President in 1959-1960. She was President of Monican Circle, 1960-1961. In addition, Jane was a member of the National Council of Catholic Women and served on the Board of Directors at Mt. Carmel Academy.

Jane also served on the Public Relations Committee, and as Vice-President and ultimately as President of the Wichita Area Girl Scout Council in 1965-1966. A highlight of her Presidency was the visit of Lady Olave Baden-Powell, World Chief Guide, in March 1966. During this visit, Lady BadenPowell planted a tree at The Girl Scout Little House to commemorate her visit.

her troop received their Hunter Safety Certificates. Dee helped create new opportunities at many of our Girl Scout Camps. For example, she championed the horse program at Camp Wiedemann.

At Starwoods Outdoor Program Center, Dee was an integral part in creating the High Adventure Course. She loves seeing Girl Scouts of all ages: zip-lining over the lake, enjoying the climbing tower, and experiencing the shooting range for archery, BB guns, and sling shots — using water balloons. And, it is no surprise that she is equally fond of camping.

100 Kansas community leaders who came together in 2014 to raise awareness and funding for the Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland Council. The Juliette’s Pearls Leadership Society has raised, over the last six years, more than $500,000 for Girl Scout Leadership Experiences for our Kansas Girl Scouts.

Dee Rolph Dee Rolph is a champion Girl Scout! She served as a member of the Board of Directors from 1989-1993. In that four-year span, she was troop leader for one of her daughters and chaired the capital campaign to raise $2,000,000 for the new Girl Scout Center, which opened in 1992. Dee Rolph has been a supporter of the Girl Scouts both in advocacy and philanthropy ever since.

Dee’s love of nature is obvious to all who know her. Fishing is her favorite sport, but she loves to hunt as well. So much so that she made sure all the girls in

Camp at Home Girl Scouts are always ready for a challenge and innovating creative solutions. While we couldn’t be together in a traditional setting, surrounding the campfire at Four Winds or zip lining at Starwoods, this year’s challenges offered a chance to explore new adventures. Camp at Home offered six weeks of unique Girl Scout summer programming for girls across Kansas, and beyond! Girl Scouts celebrated sisterhood and fun with camp sessions filled with songs, crafts, engaging activities, and community guests. With Camp at Home, Girl Scouts connected and engaged while earning badges, meeting new friends, and discovering the world through inspiring activities.

Each year we enjoy taking time to celebrate the amazing volunteers who make Girl Scouts possible at our Annual Meeting. As the highest volunteer award available at Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland, this honor goes to women who have lived the Girl Scout mission and embodied the principles of our founder, Juliette Gordon Low. Recipients of this honor have contributed in a significant and unique way to Girl Scouting within the council, left a continued impact on girls and adults, and exemplified the Girl Scout Promise and Law. This year, Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland is excited to announce that Edie McQuade has received the Juliette Gordon Low Lifetime Achievement Award. Her decades of service to the Girl Scout movement and embodiment of living the Girl Scout Promise and Law contributed to her receiving this prestigious award. Over the years, Edie has served as Product Program Manager for several troops, planned numerous activities for Girl Scouts in Russell, led five counties as a Service Unit Manager for multiple years, contributed to her service unit’s finance committee, and acted as community coordinator. She is a founding member

of the Juliette’s Pearls Leadership Society, established in 2014. Her past contributions have also earned Edie the Outstanding Leader, Appreciation Pin, and Thanks Badge I awards. Those that nominated Edie for the Juliette Gordon Low Lifetime Achievement Award shared their thoughts on her service to Girl Scouts.

“Edie exemplifies what it means to be a Girl Scout. Through her leadership and service, she has enriched both girls and leaders in her community and Service Unit 74. [She has given] continued devotion and time over the years to an organization that gave to her as a child.

She learned through the Girl Scout program and then took it upon herself to make sure that all girls and adults who never experienced Girl Scouting would [have] the same opportunities she did. Her blood runs Girl Scout green and she is an excellent candidate for this award. ”

“She has also helped to mentor many young women of which several have gone on to lead their own Girl Scout troops in Russell. New troop leaders look to Edie to help them with their troop leadership questions and to provide insight on the Girl Scout program and badges. She was a girl member of the organization for 11 years of which she earned the highest award a Girl Scout can earn at the time, the First Class award. When she was a girl member, she formed friendships that she is still nurturing 35 years after the fact. Girl Scouting has allowed her to share travel, camping and life skill experiences with the girls throughout the years. Edie exemplifies a true Girl Scout in all that she does. She has taken the Girl Scout Promise and Law into her everyday life and does make a difference in all that she does.”

Gold Award Girl Scouts don’t just change the world for the better, they change it for good.

The Gold Award is earned by girls in grades 9–12 who demonstrate extraordinary leadership in developing sustainable solutions to local, national, and global challenges. Since 1916, Girl Scouts have answered the call to drive lasting, impactful change.

GSKH Gold Award Girl Scouts ❧ 2018-2019 Anayah Elsen, before graduating from Parsons High School,

earned the Gold Award for her "Cut the Drama out of Trauma" project.

Discovering how difficult emergency room environments are for children, she focused on creating an initiative that would comfort children during difficult times. Her program delivers supply bags filled with coloring books, stress alleviating toys, and safety tips for families of the children. New decor and child-safe tablets for gaming and watching movies were also provided. This sustainable effort has been introduced to several hospitals and other medical spaces for children.

Ashley Mann graduated this May from Parsons High School.

After noticing a lack of access to books, she decided to take action.

Ashley set up two Little Free Libraries in her community, citing her love for reading inspired by her father as a driving force behind her project. Building the libraries required her to learn new skills including woodworking, power-coating, and welding. Along the way, she also discovered a new love of problem solving to better her community.

Earning the Gold Award has encouraged her to continue making the world a better place.

Dalyn McFee graduated from Rawlins County High School

in 2019. Dalyn's passion for working with children manifested in her "Snuggle and Read" project, which focused on increasing the literacy skills of children in foster care. She placed donation boxes at local church and several businesses, activating the support of community members through the collection of books and blankets. Coordination with local social workers and ministries allowed her the opportunity to donate bags filled with books and blankets. These bags will continue to be given to foster children as they are moved to and from homes without the ability to take personal belongings.

Lacy Bower graduated from Hutchinson High School in 2019

after receiving her Gold Award. She created and implemented her "A Walk of Love" project, aimed at supporting individuals as they seek help from abuse. Lacy provided a sustainable method of collection for necessities such as toiletries, clothing, and food for those in need.

Two collection boxes circulate during Domestic Awareness Month in October that the Hutchinson community now maintains.

Lauren Baldwin, a 2019 graduate of Labette County High

School, earned her Gold Award by developing a fitness program focused on restoring mobility for seniors in Parsons. She integrated technology to promote healthy habits by introducing a Nintendo Wii into the lives of nursing home residents. A tangibly positive atmosphere was created as Parsons residents engaged with the program.

Misty Cole graduated from Spearville High School in 2019. She

earned her Gold Award by revitalizing garden beds throughout her community. Her initiative ensured that old garden beds were given new life, increasing the quality of life for Dodge City residents. Materials were provided with local groups to ensure repairs can be made and the garden beds can last 30 years like the ones before them.

Nena Taylor earned her Gold Award before graduating

from Parsons Senior High School in 2019. Upon hearing community members discuss the need for more youth fitness options, Nena took action. She constructed a Gaga Pit for her local church and the youth group it serves. She spread the word throughout her school district with flyers and the local recreation center's newsletter. Once complete, the entire community was invited for a Girl Scouts "S'mores and Gaga Pit" celebration.

This Spring brought many unexpected changes and impacted communities across our council. As Girl Scouts rise to any occasion or challenge, Girl Scouts of Kansas Heartland introduced a new initiative to support essential Kansans on the front lines of the pandemic.

Through Cookies for Courage, Kansans purchased packages of Girl Scout Cookies to be donated to health care providers, first responders, city and

county workers, grocery store clerks, and others who were still required to work amidst a rapidly changing landscape. Our Kansas communities rallied and generously donated more than 7,000 packages of Girl Scout Cookies through this initiative. Thank you to everyone who shared, donated, and participated in Cookies for Courage. Because of you, Girl Scouts were able to share a sweet treat in support of our neighbors.

Put your 5 Skills to the test, find out about the new products, and meet “Sophie the Sloth” from Tanganyika Wildlife Park. A zookeeper will be live with “Sophie” and will be answering questions about sloths. Ask a question for the zookeeper during registration, and your question may even be featured and answered during the rally!

Rally participants will receive a Fall Rally patch and a chance to win a free pass for one Girl Scout and one adult to enjoy the wildlife at Tanganyika Wildlife Park.

NSC First Aid/CPR for Older Girls: Fall Session

GRADE: 6-12 REGISTRATION DEADLINE: 9/14 PROGRAM TYPE: Girl members only GIRL COST: $30 ADULT COST: N/A This course provides you with the skills needed to successfully perform First Aid and CPR. At the conclusion of this course you will be First Aid and CPR certified by the National Safety Council.

This course includes in-person lessons on each safety topic and then skills and written testing with a certified instructor. The girls will be given their instructional books upon arrival and they will go through online video segments alongside the in-person instruction and practicing of correct technique. Participants must be physically able to perform the basic skills required for CPR. Participants will not be allowed to enter the class if they arrive more than 15 minutes after the class begins. Please bring a sack lunch.

After the deadline date, you’ll choose your workshop choices as well as your sleeping arrangements: cabin bunks, lodge (floor or air mattress), platform tents or you can provide your own personal tent to camp.
