We are delighted to welcome you to our 2019 Silver Award Ceremony Presentation. The Girl Scout Silver Award, the highest achievement a Cadette Girl Scout can earn, indelibly marks a Girl Scout as an accomplished and distinguished member of their community and world.

At the Girl Scouts, we strive to build girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. The remarkable young women we celebrate this evening are shining examples of these ideals.

We are proud to bestow on them the Silver Award.

Earning the Silver Award is no easy feat – only 6% of eligible girls achieve this prestigious honor. We are thrilled that 187 girls here in New York City demonstrated real leadership in their communities through the design and completion of a 50+ hour Take Action Project.

The Silver Award acknowledges the recipient’s dedication to not only empower and better herself, but to making the world a better place for others. Silver Award Girl Scouts prove that they are courageous leaders and visionary change makers that leave a sustainable legacy in their communities, throughout New York City, and beyond.

Girl Scouting’s Highest Awards

Girl Scouting’s highest awards program gives girls unique opportunities to reach out to others in need, both locally and globally. The Gold, Silver, and Bronze Awards are the highest honors Girl Scouts can receive and are a currency of this investment, representing her chance to make a difference for people in areas such as social services, healthcare, education, and any number of other arenas. Girls begin to know themselves better and realize what they’re capable of doing, explore the world, and connect with others in their community on a deeper level.

Girl Scout Bronze Award

The Girl Scout Bronze Award is the highest honor a Girl Scout Junior can achieve. Girls and their teams plan and complete a 20+ hour Take Action project where they learn about the kind of fun that happens when you work with other Girl Scouts to make a difference.

Girl Scout Silver Award

The Girl Scout Silver Award is the highest award a Girl Scout Cadette can earn and teaches girls the skills necessary to design and implement a project that she is passionate about and has a lasting impact on her community. Each girl is required to design and complete a 50+ hour Take Action Project, individually or in a small group.

Girl Scout Gold Award

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest and most prestigious award a young woman can earn in Girl Scouting. Nationally, more than 5,500 Girl Scouts design, implement, and complete Gold Award projects every year.

Each girl is required to design and complete an 80+ hour Take Action Project that will have a sustainable impact on her community.

2019 Silver Award Recipients Bios JOIE ABINANTI Troop / Borough: 3054 / Manhattan Project: Joie addressed the issue of high tag prices of prom dresses that many families can’t afford. Her project empowered girls to feel their best on prom night by helping them find a dress that they love for free.

KALEIGH ACOSTA Troop / Borough: 2702/ Brooklyn Project: Kaleigh brought joy to everyone in her community by being an active volunteer at several events passing out smiley face stickers and friendship bracelets.

EMILLY AGUILAR Troop / Borough: 4224/ Queens Project: Emilly worked to make the arts accessible to her community. She partnered with her library to offer free art classes for younger children teaching them skills and inspiring creative expression.

COLBY ALFIERI Troop / Borough: 3459 / Manhattan Project: Colby partnered with the Association to Benefit Children to teach young children about STEAM; Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math. While the children attended a classroom activity, parents had the opportunity to attend English classes and obtain their GED. ELLENI ALFONSO Troop / Borough: 4402 / Queens Project: Elleni improved the overall look of her school and church by cleaning, weeding, and planting flowers, to create a beautiful and positive environment for all to enjoy.

JULIA AMONE Troop / Borough: 5183 / Staten Island Project: Julia noticed that there were sick children who are permanent residents of St. Mary’s Hospital who lack creative outlets. She supplied these children with art supplies and sensory boxes to keep their minds healthy and active.

JILLIAN ANTRETTER Troop / Borough: 4011 / Queens Project: Jullian promoted heart health awareness by participating in the “Little Hats Big Hearts” project by the American Heart Association. Jullian spread awareness throughout her community and received donations which helped her to fund her creation of over 500 red hats for premature newborns that were later donated to a local hospital.

ANGELINA APONTE Troop / Borough: 4098 / Queens Project: Angelina tackled the lack of art classes provided in her school, by offering free art classes, which she taught herself, in her school library. Angelina’s art classes focused on sustaining the environment and combatting pollution.

TRINITY ARZU Troop / Borough: 1025 / Bronx Project: Trinity saw the impact house fires had on those who lost all of their belongings. Through donations, Trinity upcycled clothes to give to fire victims locally in the Bronx, and globally in Guyana through the HOPE Foundation.

AGNES AU Troop / Borough: 3197 / Manhattan Project: Agnes addressed the issue of homelessness by partnering with the Coalition of the Homeless to create personal hygiene kits to distribute to children. These kits included items such as toothbrushes, toothpaste, band aids, and antiseptic cream.

ZANOBIAH BACCHUS Troop / Borough: 2035 / Brooklyn Project: Zanobiah helped women in domestic violence shelters by creating an incentive program, encouraging their attendance at group meetings, counseling, keeping their units clean, adhering to curfew, and reinforcing other positive behaviors. In exchange, the women earned certificates as currency to purchase handbags.

OLIVIA BAGAN Troop / Borough: 3005 / Manhattan Project: Olivia raised awareness of homelessness in NYC by partnering with Concourse House and hosting a drive to distribute items such as diapers, baby formula, clothing, pacifiers, bottles, bibs, toiletries, and other necessities.

THALIA BENITEZ Troop / Borough: 4675 / Queens Project: Thalia saw an opportunity for people to take advantage of Edith Macy Center by restoring their outdoor space so visitors can relax and enjoy with their families.

DANIELLA BALLATORE Troop /Borough: 4422 / Queens Project: Daniella helped to spread awareness on the importance of donating blood by coordinating blood drives in her parish and developing a system to maintain a successful program for the future.

ALYVEA BENNETT Troop / Borough: 3070 / Manhattan Project: Alyvea partnered up with her local senior citizen center to provide a voice for seniors who wanted to share their life stories with others.

CHRISTINA BASANDELLA Troop / Borough: 4011 / Queens Project: Christina addressed the experiences of children with deployed military parents. Her project brought families closer by donating children books to parents to read to their children over webcam.

TATYANA BASCOM Troop / Borough: 4147 / Queens Project: Tatyana saw an opportunity for people to take advantage of Edith Macy Center by restoring their outdoor space so they can relax and enjoy with their families.

LINDSAY BECKERMAN Troop / Borough: 2880 / Brooklyn Project: Lindsay addressed the issue of young girls who miss school due to not having access to proper hygiene products because of poverty. Lindsay partnered with Days for Girls who provide reusable hygiene kits to girls all over the world by hosting several sewing events.

JOCELYN BELENA Troop / Borough: Juliette / Manhattan Project: Jocelyn saw the need for new books at the children’s hospital library.

She gathered over 275 new books to donate to her local hospital for children to enjoy.

VANESSA BERNAL Troop / Borough: 4079 / Queens Project: Vanessa partnered up with the Edith Macy Conference Center to revitalize the visitor area with plants and flyers to make the area more appealing to those who stopped by.

MEGHAN BERNARDY Troop / Borough: 4791 / Queens Project: Meghan tackled the issue of low bee population by spreading awareness of the issue. Meghan learned and studied under a professional beekeeper on the importance of careful maintenance.

MADELINE BROWN Troop / Borough: 4349 / Queens Project: Madeline saw an opportunity for people to take advantage of Edith Macy Center by restoring their outdoor space so visitors can relax and enjoy with their families.

KATELYN BOUMA Troop / Borough: 5255 / Staten Island Project: Katelyn teamed up with Pet Smart to make homemade treats and toys for both cats and dogs.

RACHEL BROWN Troop / Borough: 2702 / Queens Project: Rachel wanted to build a stronger bond within families by hosting a Harvest Night which included food and games that they can enjoy together.

ESTI BOWERMAN Troop / Borough: 2880 / Brooklyn Project: Esti addressed the issue of young girls who miss school due to not having access to proper hygiene products because of poverty. ADIA BROOKS Troop / Borough: 2808 / Brooklyn Project: Adia saw an opportunity for people to take advantage of Edith Macy Center by restoring their outdoor space so visitors can relax and enjoy with their families.

TAMERA BROWN Troop / Borough: 4011 / Queens Project: Tamera created homemade sandwiches and care kits which she passed to Airtrain Plaza Hotel that distributes them to those living in homeless shelters.

EMILY BROWNE Troop / Borough: 4791/ Queens Project: Emily saw an opportunity for people to take advantage of Edith Macy Center by restoring their outdoor space so visitors can relax and enjoy with their families.

BELLA BURSOR Troop / Borough: Juliette / Manhattan Project: Bella addressed the issue that underprivileged kids face by not having access to reading books at home. Bella donated books to the Foundling which helps to distribute books to children when they visit the doctor’s office.

MEGAN CACACE Troop / Borough: 5042 / Staten Island Project: Megan saw an opportunity for people to take advantage of Edith Macy Center by restoring their outdoor space so visitors can relax and enjoy with their families.

TANAYA CAMPBELL Troop / Borough: 3070 / Manhattan Project: Tanaya addressed loneliness and inactivity in the senior citizen population living in retirement homes. Tanaya created cards in different languages celebrating different occasions to distribute to the seniors.

SARAH CASTILLO Troop / Borough: 4688 / Queens Project: Sarah spread awareness of the importance of blood donations by holding a blood drive that benefited her local hospital.

VALERIE CHAN Troop / Borough: 4688 / Queens Project: Valerie spread awareness of donating blood by encouraging people to take part through posters and talks held at her local church. Valerie was able to hold several blood drives that benefited people in need.

VIVIAN CHAN Troop / Borough: 3197 / Manhattan Project: Vivian addressed gender inequity. Vivian encouraged young girl scouts to achieve their goals through a workshop on bridging the gender gap.

She also created several social media resources that parents and guardians can use toencourage their young girls.

MARISSA CHULEE Troop / Borough: 4568 / Queens Project: Marissa saw an opportunity for people to take advantage of Edith Macy Center by restoring their outdoor space so visitors can relax and enjoy with their families.

ADRIANNA CHUNG Troop / Borough: 3197 / Manhattan Project: Adrianna addressed the issue people without homes face, by not having access to personal hygiene products. Adrianna created 100 hygiene kits that were distributed to The Bowery Mission that supports the homeless population.

OLIVIA CINQUEMANI Troop / Borough: 4011 / Queens Project: Olivia teamed up with a nonprofit organization called Samaritan’s Purse that supplies children without homes all over the world gifts filled with toys, clothes, and other necessities.

AUTUMN CLEMMONS Troop / Borough: 2702/ Brooklyn Project: Autumn wanted to build a stronger bond within families by hosting a Harvest Night which included food and games that they can enjoy together.

ALTHEA COLLIER Troop / Borough: 3312 / Manhattan Project: Althea educated New Yorkers on what to do in the event of fires, hurricanes, heat waves, blackouts, and other emergencies. Althea created a short film that walks people through the proper steps to take for emergency management.

ALYSSA CONNELLY Troop / Borough: 4725 / Queens Project: Alyssa noticed the large amount of stray cats in her community. She spread awareness of a local trap-neuterreturn group in her area, educated Brownie Girl Scouts on adopting pets, and created pet beds for animals in need.

CASSIDY CONTE Troop / Borough: 4378 / Queens Project: Cassidy partnered with Saint John’s Bread of Life to bring a cheerful Christmas to families displaced in domestic violence shelters. During the event, children were greeted by Santa Claus, given toys and necessities, and a warm meal.

ADIA CONTEH Troop / Borough: 3484 / Manhattan Project: Adia educated her community on the importance of passing the Equal Rights. Adia informed her school on gender equity issues and created resource kits to spread knowledge and awareness on equal rights.

2019 Silver Award Recipients Bios MACKENZIE DAHLING Troop / Borough: 5094 / Staten Island Project: Mackenzie helped girls who cannot afford dresses for various occasions such as prom and holiday events by collecting and distributing free dresses.

CHRISTINA DAKIS Troop / Borough: 4400 / Queens Project: Christina spread awareness on the importance of donating blood.

Christina partnered with NY Blood Center to organize a blood drive in her community.

ALLEGRA DECHERRIE Troop / Borough: 3059 / Manhattan Project: Allegra addressed the shortage of beekeepers, which ultimately leads to a shortage of hives and bees. To train potential beekeepers, Allegra held three workshops that taught bee maintenance.

KEJA DEPEIZA Troop / Borough: 4704 / Queens Project: Keja wanted to empower women with autism to love and feel beautiful by hosting a workshop that helps them create their own personalized jewelry.

JENNIFER DERISE Troop / Borough: 2179 /Brooklyn Project: Jennifer addressed the issue of violence within her community by hosting a peace dinner in her local church to spread knowledge of the impact of violence to her troop and community members.

EMMA DIAMOND Troop / Borough: 3005 / Manhattan Project: Emma partnered with Room to Read by hosting a gift wrapping event collecting donations and distributing them to a local school.

EMILY DIAZ Troop / Borough: 1552 / Bronx Project: Emily addressed the issue of homelessness within her community by collecting and distributing donations to her local church.

SHANNON DICKS Troop / Borough: 5183 / Staten Island Project: Shannon noticed that there were sick children who are permanent residents at St. Mary’s Hospital who lack creative outlets. She supplied these children with art materials and sensory boxes to encourage creativity and skill development.

ALESSANDRA DIMARIA Troop / Borough: 4011 / Queens Project: Alessandra partnered with Paws of War who place shelter dogs with US military veterans that suffer from PTSD. Alessandra helped to proving the veterans with supplies they needed to take care of their new pets.

SAMANTHA DONG Troop / Borough: 3197 / Manhattan Project: Samantha teamed up with Coalition for the Homeless to provide children with much needed first aids kits and books to promote literacy.

IMANI DOWDEN Troop / Borough: 4606 / Queens Project: Imani spread awareness of the dangers of using certain chemical products by creating her own line of all natural products.

EVELYN DURGIN-BRUCE Troop / Borough: 3298 / Manhattan Project: Evelyn addressed the decline in numbers of sea-turtles due to human interference. She created paper and online informational material to share with her classmates and visitors at the Prospect Park Zoo.

DANISHA EDWARDS Troop / Borough: 2534 / Brooklyn Project: Danisha addressed the needs of homeless communities by collecting clothing and food donations to distribute at her church and local W.I.C. Center.

VARELA ELINETH Troop / Borough: 4079 / Queens Project: Varela participated in making Edith Macy memorable and peaceful by collecting various facts about the local wildlife and documenting various points of interest along the nature trails.

ANYAH FERRA Troop / Borough: 4224 / Queens Project: Anyah partnered up with the Covenant Lutheran Church to update their ledgers by creating CDs of the baptisms, funerals, confirmations, and marriages that the church has performed over the years. Anyah then placed that information on Ancestry.com.

MARY FERRARA Troop / Borough: 4011 / Queens Project: Mary partnered with Operation Paperback to collect book donations to ship to US military parents who are deployed, in hopes they can read them to their children over webcam.

NISSA FIGUEROA Troop / Borough: 2402 / Brooklyn Project: Nissa addressed the lack of fresh fruits and vegetables in her community by providing fresh produce to her local food pantry to provide healthier options for families in need.

KIMBERLY FLORES Troop / Borough: 1342 / Bronx Project: Kimberly’s school library was recently renovated and organizing all the previous items fell on the shoulders of the school librarian. Kimberly assisted with the restoration of her school library by removing outdated books, organizing books, and putting furniture back in its proper place.

PHOEBE FLOWERS Troop / Borough: 3064 / Manhattan Project: Phoebe worked with Greenwich House Day Camp as a counselor in training to expose young children to art projects such as origami, painting, and architectural designs.

TAYLOR FRANCIS Troop / Borough: 2702/ Brooklyn Project: Taylor wanted to build a stronger bond within families by hosting a Harvest Night which included food and games that they can enjoy together.

ALEXA FROST Troop / Borough: 3459 / Manhattan Project: Alexa Colby partnered with the Association to Benefit Children to teach young children about STEAM; Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, & Math.

KENNEDY GARCIA Troop / Borough: 4011 / Queens Project: Kennedy organized a student versus faculty basketball game to raise funds for Play It Forward, who provide gym equipment to underserved schools.

KATHERINE GARLISI Troop / Borough: 5278 / Staten Island Project: Katherine organized a Beeping Egg Hunt which caters to children who suffer from vision impairment so they can enjoy an Easter egg hunt.

2019 Silver Award Recipients Bios MADISON GARRETT Troop / Borough: 2261 / Brooklyn Project: Morgan educated hikers and trail-walkers about the many bird species found in the Edith Macy Convention Center by posting, carving, and painting information along trees.

ROISIN GARRY Troop / Borough: 4011 / Queens Project: Roisin took part of the Let’s Play It Forward project which helps to donate gently used sports equipment to children in need.

STELLA GIBSON Troop / Borough: 2702/ Brooklyn Project: Stella addressed the endangerment of Darwin foxes due to changes in their habitat. She created online resources and conducted a presentation that brought light to the issue.

ZARINAH GILCHRIST-JONES Troop / Borough: 2649 / Brooklyn Project: Zarinah wanted to combat low self-esteem in young women by creating the W.E.I.R.D.O. project that encouraged young women to love themselves regardless of their differences.

MORGAN GONZALEZ Troop / Borough: 3070 / Manhattan Project: Morgan encouraged senior citizens who were living in a retirement home to take part in more group activities, by organizing events such as a tea party for all to enjoy.

As a result of her efforts, Maeve provided 100 girls in her community with dresses to attend prom.

CINDY YANG Troop / Borough: 3197 / Manhattan Project: Cindy partnered up with her troop members to provide hygienic kits to individuals in various homeless shelters.

JULIE YOUNG Troop / Borough: 3484 / Manhattan Project: Julie raised awareness on the inequality woman face and promoted the importance of the Equal Rights Amendment. She used social media to advocate for women’s rights.
