Four Pillars of Girl Scouts STEM

Entrepreneurship

In today’s world, STEM skills are critical. From coding to protecting our planet, today’s young leaders use STEM skills to make the world a better place for animals and humans alike. Women comprise half of the US workforce but occupy only 27% of STEM jobs. Girl Scouts provides programs in science, technology, engineering and math to increase confidence and interest for girls.

As Girl Scouts engage in entrepreneurship programming, they become innovative and entrepreneurial minded leaders, giving them the courage to fail and keep trying the tools to create an independent future, and the power to do good in the world.

Champion STEM by joining us for the following programs, STEM Day Camp Jacksonville, STEM Day Camp Fort Walton, STEM Day Camp Tallahassee, and Daisy Summer Series STEM Challenge.

As we embark on the upcoming Cookie Season, it’s time to put your skills to practice including goal setting, decision making, and business ethics. Check out our financial literacy programs in this guide and visit our financial program partners at Cookie Rally. We have more programs coming soon, look for them on our webiste.

Life Skills

Outdoors

Girl Scouts offers experiences covering topics like civic engagement, healthy living, and communication skills to help girls grow confidence as they develop the skills to lead their best life! Whether it is through exercising and staying healthy, developing strong relationships with family and peers, or advocating on behalf of others, girls will gain the skills to accept challenges and overcome obstacles.

Girl Scouts has a long and storied history of getting every girl outdoors. Many Girl Scouts tell us camping trips are one of the best things about their Girl Scout experience. Connecting with the great outdoors in a girl-led setting is a big benefit of Girl Scouts.

Build new life skills by attending Staying Fit with the Gainesville Circus Center, Cadette’s New Cuisine Cooking Class with JAX Cooking Studio, and our council-wide Mental Health programs in May.

There are many ways to disconnect to reconnect this season. We are bringing back She’s a Park Explorer where you can find adventure in state parks throughout our council. The summer camp schedule is ready for you to explore and plan out your summer. Adventure awaits!

Cookie Program Quick Reference Guide Thank you for your dedication and support of your Girl Scout during the Girl Scout Cookie Program! The encouragement you give her makes a difference not only for your Girl Scout, but also in their communities. Participation in the Girl Scout Cookie Program helps girls develop five key skills that will last a lifetime: Goal Setting: Girls establish goals individually, and as a team, and create a plan to reach them; developing cooperation and team building skills along the way. Decision Making: Girls help decide how their troop spends their cookie money, furthering critical thinking and problem-solving skills. Money management: Girls take cookie orders, handle customers’ money, and gain valuable and practical life skills around financial literacy.

People Skills: As your girl talks to, listens to and works with all kinds of people, she will develop healthy relationships and important conflict resolution skills.

Business Ethics: Girl Scouts are honest and responsible at every step. Her business ethics reinforce the positive values she is developing as a Girl Scout.

“My favorite thing about Girl Scouts is... the sisterhood that creates life long connections. Just this morning I had an old Girl Scout of mine from about 13 years ago reach out to me to help her remember how to do a legal and appropriate respectful flag retirement ceremony. Woke me up, but I got up and emailed her the ceremony. She’s now a firefighter and I’m proud of her. These are the “silver linings” I tell leaders about when they get overwhelmed at times.” -Kathleen Roberts, Troop Leader Troop 572

Mental Health Matters May is Mental Health Awareness Month! Mental Health Awareness Month has been observed in the U.S. since 1949. Together, we fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for policies that support the millions of people in the U.S. affected by mental illness. Even before COVID, we were already in the middle of a youth mental health crisis, and the pandemic has only exacerbated the stress on girls’ mental health. Girl Scouts is taking a more dedicated approach to supporting the needs of our Movement and girls across the country. Our Mental Wellness Initiative aims to give girls the tools they need to support their own mental wellness and to give council staff, volunteers, and parents/caregivers the resources they need to support girls and practice self-care. Here are some ways you can learn more this May: ◾ Earn the new mental wellness badges as a troop or on your own including Knowing My Emotion, Finding My Voice and Showing Up for Me and You based on level. ◾ Attend the Youth Mental Health First Aid Training on May 18, 2024. This course is designed to teach adults how to help adolescents experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or crisis. ◾ Participate in Mental Wellness programs happening across council in May. ◾ Build your toolbox with skills so you are able to manage your emotions. Create a self-care plan and experiment with different techniques. ◾ Take some time to disconnect to reconnect and explore the outdoors.

Say yes to...

Summer Adventures! Is she ready for camp? If your girl has never spent the night away from home, you may want to start her with a short 1 or 2-night stay at resident camp. After that, she can progress into whatever length of camp she desires. Although age is one factor in readiness for resident camp, a girl’s maturity level and personality are more important indicators. Talk to your girl. If she is enthusiastic about attending, she will probably enjoy camp. The following questions may help in determining readiness for resident camp. ◾ Has your daughter ever been away from home for more than one night without family members? ◾ Can she keep up with her personal belongings? ◾ Can she take care of her own basic hygiene needs such as showering, toileting, and brushing her teeth without assistance? ◾ Can she cope with unfamiliar people, new places, and group schedules? ◾ Does she enjoy making new friends? ◾ Does she like group situations? ◾ Does she enjoy being outdoors? Can she see mosquitos, bugs, or other “nature” friends without being frightened?

“My favorite thing about Girl Scouts is... helping girls expand, explore, stretch and discover the world and opportunities girls can become. Seeing them find things they never thought they would be interested in and taking leadership.” -Carol Dziedzic Kirk, Juliette Parent

Top FIVE reasons to camp with your troop Fosters Closer Friendships There is nothing like spending a week together with your troop to build on your relationships, and make memories together. Girls bond over their camp experience, the challenges they face together and the good times they enjoy.

Boosts Social Skills According to a study by the American Camp Association (ACA), camp experiences also help develop essential social skills like communication, teamwork, and conflict resolution.

Personal Growth Camp offers a great environment to take positive risk opportunities, and take on new challenges. This helps them develop important life skills such as leadership, communication, decision-making, and teamwork skills.

Tech-Free Experiences Camp helps children connect to the joy of life beyond the screen. Girls have opportunities to engage their minds in ways they’ll enjoy. Time away from the screen is vital to a child’s brain, body, spirit and future.

Connect with Nature Nature stimulates all the senses. When a child is outdoors, they get to see, touch, hear, smell and sometimes even taste nature. Sensory development makes life richer, fuller and all-around more pleasurable and wonderous.

“My favorite thing about Girl Scouts is... spending every birthday at camp has been a tradition of mine since I was 8 years old. I was always nervous before about making new friends, but by the end of the week I had gained a sisterhood and a new place to call home. Camp traditions and memories always stay close to my heart. As I get older, I reflect on the important life experiences and independent skills I gained while at camp and utilize it in my every day life.” - Ashlyn Howell, Outdoor Girl Experience Manager
