MISSION STATEMENT Girard is a full-scholarship boarding school for academically capable students from qualified families of limited financial resources.

Girard College’s mission is to prepare scholarship students for advanced education and life as informed, ethical and productive citizens through a rigorous education program that promotes intellectual, social and emotional growth.

Girard College students will be prepared to complete a bachelor’s degree in order to maximize their ability

to pursue productive careers and be engaged citizens.

The Annual Report provides us all the opportunity to look back over the past year, to consider where we have been and where we are headed.

As we look to the future, we are excited about the prospect of the development of our new academic organization that we expect to be operational by September 2016.:

We take great pleasure and pride in both, of course, because we boast an extraordinary history and because we believe that our culture of opportunity will result in higher levels of achievement for more students in more areas than ever before.

(a) A distinctive grade 1 to 8 school housed in the west end; and (b) a new high school (grades 9 to 12) that is thematically aligned with the values of our founder, Stephen Girard. It is our firm belief that, by redesigning our academic structure, we will better serve our students, across the board.

In September, when our students and their families returned to our campus to register for the 2015-16 school year, we posted signage that reminded everyone in our community that “EXCELLENCE is within your grasp.” We are committed to this belief, and every decision we make is designed to propel us in that direction.

In May, we were incredibly proud to graduate a young man who was awarded an extremely select Gates Millennium Scholarship. Of the 57,000 applicants nationwide, only 1,000 high school seniors attained the award, a scholarship that will fund each student’s education through and including his/her doctoral degree. The Gates Millennium Scholar from Girard College was accepted into Harvard and is studying political science and economics.

Eddie Grade 5 Dream: to become a musician

RESPONSIBILITY. OPPORTUNITY. Our founder, Stephen Girard, took these words very seriously. In fact they defined his life.

A French ex-patriot living in Philadelphia, Girard built an extremely lucrative business as a trader, shipper and banker. From humble beginnings himself, Girard understood that many people had little opportunity to flourish because they lacked education.

Girard believed it was his responsibility to take action to provide the opportunity missing in their lives. He used his enormous wealth to endow a school for orphans, Girard College, opening in 1848.

Today, we have preserved and continue to fulfill his vision, providing opportunity to hundreds of boys and girls who can change the trajectory of their lives through education. It is our responsibility to do so, and our honor.

The need for an institution like Girard College has not diminished. For over 167 years, Girard College has changed the lives of thousands of students. Your support will sustain a tradition that promotes EXCELLENCE and will ensure that the next generations of Girard Scholars will also say, “EXCELLENCE is within our grasp.”

RIGOR. INSPIRATION. At Girard College, we educate children in grades 1 through 12 in alignment with the rigorous Common Core State Standards.

Girard’s academic program provides comprehensive preparation, and small class sizes create an intimate setting for learning.

Highly trained teachers apply the latest educational strategies in thought-provoking and engaging lessons. Specialists provide classes in art, music, physical education and health. Technology is an intrinsic part of the curriculum.

Creativity and analytical thinking go hand in hand with rigor at Girard. Learning physics priciples with K’nex, composing and then

playing one’s own music in the piano lab, designing problems that can only be solved using a 3D printer ... these are all current examples of inspiration driving students to reach their potential.

COMPASSION. EXPERIENCE. Girard students live on campus five days a week. This allows us to enhance their classroom lessons with widely varied experiences.

Our students can (and do!) walk to the Barnes Museum, the Free Library and the zoo. They celebrate Earth Day by learning about the animals with whom we share our planet. Lower School physical education now includes yoga, and the students learn to listen to their bodies and quiet their minds.

Older students join in city-wide groups such as Model UN and the World Affairs Council.

They also meet regularly with mentors from the community who open their eyes to various career paths, All of these experiences can enhance academic learning, but they also expose our students to a different way of thinking, an awareness of the other person or group, a point of view formerly unconsidered. They teach selflessness and compassion.

RESPECT. GROWTH. As a residential school, we are committed to educating the whole child.

Our Five Core Values are RESPECT RESPONSIBILITY INTEGRITY SELF-DISCIPLINE COMPASSION These values are integrated into everything we do at Girard College, but are most evident in the Residential Program when life is our classroom.

After class, Girard students live in a community that closely resembles a family. Residential Advisors (RAs) live in the residence halls and offer guidance and supervision throughout the afternoon and evening. They lead students through a schedule that includes study time, homework, dinner, clubs and fun. Even the youngest students have responsibilities such as folding and putting away their clothes.

The RAs have a significant role in helping children to navigate life, manage their time, develop social skills and become a positive member of the community, always in pursuit of EXCELLENCE.

Life in the residential halls offers many opportunities for personal growth.

INTEGRITY. ACHIEVEMENT. Our Extended-Day Program (EDP) takes place Monday through Thursday between 3:30 and 5:30 p.m. and exposes students to projectbased learning opportunities that foster the intellectual, social and physical development of the whole child.

Students learn chess, tend the campus garden, volunteer at the SPCA, attend academic tutoring or enrichment sessions and participate in our award-winning Mock Trial teams.

SELF-DISCIPLINE. ADVANCEMENT. Girard College promotes a strong collegebound culture.

Every student who completes a Girard College education gains an understanding of college expectations and what it takes to be successful in applying to, gaining access to and graduating from college.

Using specialized software and individual conferences, the college guidance staff helps each student to identify their strengths as well as areas that need improvement. This process promotes productive discussions of college options and career possibilities.

The college process provides support through application, acceptance, financial aid decisions and academic scheduling. Counseling even continues throughout the college years to make sure that Girard students can achieve the EXCELLENCE that is within their grasp.
