2012-13 ANNUAL REPORT

Grade 6 Class Trip to the Lackawanna Coal Mine

2101 South College Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19121

Grade 10 Visits Statue of Stephen Girard on the grounds of the Philadelphia Museum of Art

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR SCHOOL! Since 1848, the campus of Girard College has been the site of lifechanging opportunities. Thousands of deserving young people have enrolled at Girard because their families wanted them to take advantage of this opportunity, to earn an education and carve out better lives. And so they have.

Generations of alumni credit Girard with readying them for college, careers and life as “engaged citizens; for teaching them in the classroom and on the playing field; for showing them how to manage their time and fulfill their obligations; for guiding them from childhood into maturity; and for providing a safe and supportive community.

Grade 10 students visit the statue of Stephen Girard on the grounds of the Philadelphia Museum of Art.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR SCHOOL! The story of Girard College is extraordinary. French expatriate Stephen Girard lived in the Colonies and the young United States from 1776 to his death in 1831. During those years, he earned a vast fortune and became a noteworthy Philadelphian who supported his adopted country personally and financially.

Because of his firm belief in the power of opportunity, Girard bequeathed the bulk of his estate to the City of Philadelphia to establish a school for underserved children. Beginning in the fall of 1848, Girard College (collège = school or academy) enrolled the first group of 98 boys whose lives would be changed forever.

Residential advisors work hard to make sure their sections are safe and comfortable places for work and play.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR SCHOOL! Girard College is a community of learners, and the backbone of that community is the dedicated staff. Teachers and residential advisors, grounds keepers and security personnel, the school nurse and the guidance counselor ‌ every adult on campus works as part of a team upholding our mission

and assisting each student on his or her own unique path. Girard staff collaborate to refine curricular enhancements and organize after-school activities; individually, they reach out to that one student who needs to be tutored or challenged. As a result, all of our students know they are cared for and valued.

Girard students have many opportunities to explore and grow intellectually. Here third graders dissect bovine eyeballs.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS! To qualify for admission to Girard College, our students must fall into a certain economic category. However, we intentionally and ardently avoid characterizing them in terms that highlight only this aspect of their lives.

Girard students are artists, writers, scientists and mathematicians. They are shy, boisterous, funny and solemn. They love soccer, play the piano, run for class office, volunteer their time, plant flowers and mug for the camera. They are children, and they are reaching for the stars.

Girard competitive athletic teams include soccer, cross country, tennis, track and field, basketball, wrestling, baseball, softball and cheerleading.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS! Girard students are motivated to work hard and play hard. They are aware of the extraordinary opportunity Girard provides, and they make the most of it in academics, athletics and the arts.

In writing or talking about their Girard experience, our students and alumni acknowledge the important role Girard College has played in their lives with statements such as: “Girard changed my life.

First graders attended their first Chapel in September of 2012 and later posed with President Clarence D. Armbrister.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR STUDENTS! In addition to academic subjects, Girard College emphasizes social skills and personal ethics. Beginning in first grade, our students are immersed in a community defined by the Five Core Values: Respect, Responsibility, Integrity, Self-Discipline and Compassion.

Posted in every classroom, dorm and office, the Core Values are referred to often and used as standards before, during and after the school day. Recognition for behavior that is representative of a Core Value is prized.

Sixth-graders took part in the 2013 SeaPerch competition, designing an under-water ROV (remotely operated vehicle) that performed tasks at the Independence Seaport Museum.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR PROGRAMS! The curriculum at Girard College is designed to prepare our students for “advanced education and life.” Supplemental programs, such as robotics, help students with particular skills and interests to expand their expertise.

Girard’s commitment to STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) is a great example. STEM projects are collaborative activities that require applied math and science to solve real-world problems.

The Junior Cavalier choir served as the opening performers at the NAIS (National Association of Independent Schools) convention in Philadelphia, March 1, 2013.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR PROGRAMS! At Girard College, the arts are an important part of our belief in educating the whole child. In art and music classes and performance groups, students learn to respect various ways of thinking, working, and expressing themselves, while making decisions in situations where answers are not predetermined.

In recent years, Girard students have pursued their interests and nurtured their talents in choir, band, electric ensemble, bell choir, dance, film production, painting, drawing, 3-D design, weaving and sculpture.

Our 2012-13 Mock Trial team, in only its second year of existence, finished the season as the number 2 team in the city of Philadelphia. Students learned all the parts for both sides of the trial, acting as witnesses, prosecutors and defenders.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR PROGRAMS! We believe that an important part of “preparing our students for life is providing opportunities in public speaking, leadership and civic awareness. Stepping out of the comfort of our protected campus environment to meet other top students and to test their own mettle

allows Girard students to stretch their wings and expand their minds. Mock Trial teams and the Girard World Affairs Council have grown out of this desire to improve as individuals and as citizens of the global community.

Girard College promotes a college-bound culture. 98% of our 2013 graduates were accepted at a college or university. On College Shirt Day, seniors proudly display their destination schools.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR FUTURE! Beginning in the sophomore year, all students receive counseling to help them find colleges and universities that suit their interests, aptitudes and needs. Long-established mentoring programs supplement school staff to support students in both their career and educational pursuits.

The majority of our students are among the first in their families to attend college, so the college process is extremely important and a source of great pride.

Alumnus Abu Fofanah ’11 is a junior at Schreyer Honors College of Penn State University. He started his own apparel business freshman year, has traveled with programs such as Presidential Leadership Academy and will graduate with a degree in Supply Chain/Finance/IST from the Smeal College of Business.

THANK YOU FOR SUPPORTING OUR FUTURE! Our mission directs us to ensure our students’ success after graduation and after college. We aim “to maximize their ability to pursue productive careers and be engaged citizens;” to prepare Girard students to thrive in their own individual futures.

In addition to providing scholarship programs that help our alumni pay for college and grad school tuition, Girard College remains connected to recent graduates via the Director of Young Alumni Support and offers guidance when needed.

YOUR SUPPORT has been essential. For more than 165 years, Girard College has provided excellence in residential education for children from single-parent families of limited financial resources. We have been able to remain tuition-free since we opened in 1848, thanks to the Girard Estate, which provides most – but not all – of the funding needed to cover the costs associated with educating and housing our students in grades 1 through 12. Each year Girard, like most independent and charter schools, depends on the generosity of friends, alumni, parents, faculty and board members for financial support. Gifts to the Girard College Development Fund also help to close the gap between what the Girard Estate can provide and the actual cost of educating and caring for each child.

AND STILL IS ‌ Make a gift today.

Thank you for your gift to the Girard College Development Fund Your gifts to the Girard Fund, our annual fund, have been critically important because these funds, along with endowment earnings, allow us to meet such basic costs as faculty and staff salaries and campus renovations and maintenance. They also provide the extra resources needed to help our students explore their interests, talents, and opportunities outside of the classroom and to cultivate skills that will stay with them for life. The students at Girard are the future of our community and of our world. The success of our mission is the key to breaking the cycle of poverty, improving the quality of life for children here and elsewhere, both today and tomorrow. Thank you for your consideration and support. For more information, please contact the Office of Advancement. Or make a gift today!
