IN MEMORY

A letter from lori As I reflect on the past year and the original 20/20 vision we had for a year that started with so much hope, I am grateful for the resiliency I saw in so many, especially our educators and families.

re-sil-ience / re’zilyens / noun 1) The capacity to recover quickly from difficulties; toughness. 2) The ability of a substance or object to spring back into shape; elasticity.

As frontline workers, our teachers stepped up and embraced their commitment to children and families while running the risk of compromising their own health and that of their own families. I won’t say it’s been easy for any of our boots-on-the-ground educators and directors. It has, in fact, been very hard. Some of them have experienced racism and uncertainty that we aren’t able to shield them from, which adds to an already overburdened psyche. Some of them experienced illness themselves or have a loved one who fell ill. They all have taken every measure possible to make their environment as safe as possible for the children they nurture and teach each day. Teachers have put children first this past year. Children who now wear masks if they are three or older. Some children are young enough to have never seen their teacher’s full face. Children are not able to mimic a smile or the spoken word, yet they are still thriving and being comforted, nurtured, and educated by people who smile with their eyes, their voices, and their hugs.

Our families have all dealt with a 10-week closure, job losses, the loss of loved one’s and their own bouts with the coronavirus. They’ve been juggling children at home on laptops for virtual learning. They’ve had to figure out how to balance all that they once took for granted, a stable, always open (no shortened hours) fully staffed center. They no longer come inside the building to see their children’s learning environment or talk with their teacher, which means they have to build trust in different ways. They don’t have the support of each other with normal activities that bring families together, and some have lost their jobs completely while some use the food pantry daily. The emotional toll on families has been immense, which means it’s also taken a toll on the children. All of the adults whom they treasure are struggling; and while they can’t articulate that concern, they feel it in their very bones. They know things aren’t “normal”; and while we all work to make it more normal, it simply isn’t…yet.

children are still thriving and being comforted, nurtured, and educated by people who smile with their eyes and their voices and their hugs.

Teachers are special people regardless of a pandemic, but ours have been incredible. They’ve shown strength and courage while facing a plethora of challenges, though a few were crushed under the pressure and have since left the field. They’ve shown elasticity and the ability to spring back while facing daily challenges that most of us didn’t have to face. They recovered and are still recovering from a year that we are all happy to see behind us. Teachers aren’t the only ones that have had to adapt to difficulties in their lives.

2020’s peril will hopefully turn into 2021’s promise; and I’m honored to be doing this work with so many tough, elastic, resilient individuals who make a difference in the lives of young children. It’s been hard, but I’m so proud of the teachers, our families, our Board, and our supporters who stepped up in a year of challenges. Thank you for being a part of uplifting us in 2020 and part of the promise of 2021. With love,

Lori Fascilla

A letter from the president As I reflect back on 2020, there are many ways to describe the year. 2020 meant many things to most of us, and I prefer to recap the experience as a preschooler might reflect on their day in the classroom, focusing on what we learned and what was good.

All of us were faced with uncertainty when our world was struck with the pandemic, and with that uncertainty came quite a bit of fear. Overnight our lives were upended and challenged – we took cover in our homes with our families and moved through our days very differently than before. We bonded with each other and learned new skills, bought and borrowed books and puzzles, and navigated the new waters of remote learning, constantly wondering if we were doing it right. We learned that it was ok for life to slow down, and we reflected on our priorities. With a hit to the economy, many Idahoans lost their jobs and were suddenly thrown into a world of struggle – how to feed our families, how we would work without childcare, when we would get to return to work so we could pay our bills. Nationwide, women stepped down from their careers and back into the role of childcare provider, and overnight most everyone learned the importance of the delicate and challenging art of quality childhood education. We learned that most of us are not educators and now hold our teachers in an even higher place in our hearts! Giraffe Laugh also grappled with the new way of life and learned how to continue to serve our families with the continued

support and dedication of our friends and donors. Our community stepped up in a huge way to ensure our families had what they needed during this time, and we thank those who continued to support our efforts to build strong families. Our teachers and staff provided unique learning opportunities and ways to stay engaged and connected even during the short time period we had to close the centers. They provided meals for those who needed it, and orchestrated access to our food pantries. With an increase in families experiencing hunger during the pandemic, and the services and support that Giraffe Laugh provides, it was critical to remain a solid resource in the community. When we reopened our centers, our teachers and staff consistently ensured a safe environment for learning and ensuring school readiness. Our teachers were recognized as essential workers more than ever before – and childcare as an essential service – and while not saving lives on the front line, they were growing minds and building strong futures. I dedicate this letter to our teachers and staff, who have redefined what it means to be resilient. Without you, this year would have looked much different for many, and for that, I thank you.

"Our community stepped up in a huge way to ensure our families had what they needed during this time, and we thank those that continued to support our efforts to build strong families."

With love,

Jennfer Erickson

Covid-19 and Giraffe Laugh\ In any moment of decision, the best thing you can do is the right thing, the worst thing you can do is nothing. - Theodore Roosevelt

Covid-19 and Giraffe Laugh: The Response Drive-Through Graduation Although COVID-19 shut down and cancelled events throughout 2020, we still found a wonderful way to celebrate our preschool graduates. Teachers, staff, and Giraffe Laugh friends and families lined the streets of our Giraffe Laugh 2 location while parents and preschool graduates drove by in decked-out cars and bikes.

Grab-and-Go Meal Program Knowing that schools and centers were closed, we understood how important meals were to children. We partnered with Nutrition Works to provide Grab-and-Go Meals to area children. Twice weekly our staff prepared, assembled, and distributed bags with two breakfast and two lunch options to last each child a couple of days.

Virtual Learning Begins When Idaho’s stay-at-home order caused our centers to close their doors, our teachers stepped up and created fun and exciting Zoom classes and get-togethers for their little learners. Some of our teachers held Facebook Live events for students as young as 2 years old while others did weekly preschool and school-age lessons via Zoom.

Futures Begin Here Drive-In Event

Although we could not host our typical Futures Begin Here Luncheon this year, we creatively found ways to ensure we could raise funds for scholarships in a way that was fun, safe, and COVID friendly. In September, Giraffe Laugh friends and families gathered in their vehicles at the Terrace Drive-In in Caldwell for a night filled with popcorn, good company, and great memories.

Giraffe Laugh Preschool in Garden City In the midst of an unprecidented pandemic, Giraffe Laugh partnered with the Idaho AEYC to bring preschool to Garden City children. You can learn more about this program by visiting pages 11 - 12.

LITTLE SHOES BIG DREAMS TOURS Due to the pandemic, we were not able to continue holding our Little Shoes Big Dream Tours in person. This meant we were not able to continue sharing our mission. We decided that one way to continue to make it safe and accessible to all was to move our tours to a virtual format. We now host our Little Shoes Big Dreams Tours twice a month via Zoom and have been able to reach an even bigger audience. We look forward to the day we will be able to continue our in-person tours but are excited to have more accessible ways to share our mission with anyone who wishes to learn more about our important work.

MEALS SERVED IN 2020 Giraffe Laugh served 32,157 meals to children attending our care along wth Grab-and-Go meals to children 0-18 for the 10 weeks we were closed during the pandemic. These meals went to both Giraffe Laugh families and surrounding community children.

Our partnership with The Idaho Food Bank means that each of our childcare centers has a food pantry containing nonperishable food items, fresh meat, dairy, produce, and frozen foods.

Extracurricular Activities Extracurricular activites looked a little different this year due to COVID-19. Many of our typical outings were canceleld or changed drastically due to the protocols of Giraffe Laugh or those we partner with. Our center directors and teachers discovered ways to rework opportunities for their students, most of which could be done safely outdoors.

Student Testimony I am glad to have had the opportunity to be part of this class and I’m so grateful because the Giraffe Laugh family really makes you feel like a part of the family. The teachers are so kind and awesome! I am sad that I will not be able to return next school year since I will be starting kindergarten but I know thanks to Ms. Annie and Ms. Anita I will be starting strong. - Ximena, Age 4

Parent Testimony The attention to child and teacher safety, individualized care, as well as the low teacher-child ratios allowed us to shed all of our fears. Since joining Giraffe Laugh’s Preschool Program, our son has not only grown socially and intellectually, but has also gained strides in confidence, emotional stability, and overall happiness.

EDUCATOR TESTIMONY Our team at Future Public School is proud to partner with Giraffe Laugh and other Garden City organizations to provide more 4-year-olds with access to early childhood education (ECE) learning opportunities. We see the immediate impact of the access as students enter our kindergarten classes and show readiness academically, behaviorally, emotionally, and socially. This readiness positively impacts our students as they work toward reading and writing proficiently by the end of 3rd grade, a particularly important benchmark in elementary school. - Heather Efaw, M. Ed., Director of Teaching and Learning

POLICY MAKER TESTIMONY I’m thrilled with this effort of the Garden City Collaborative. Adding preschool spaces helps fill a gap that will literally change the lives of children. Thank you for strengthening families in Garden City! - Mayor John Evans, Garden City
