THEATRE AND MODERN DANCE (BAD) From 25th October to 4th November, Bilbao will become the capital of theatre and modern dance by holding the fourteenth edition of this performing arts festival promoted every year by the Bilbao City Council Culture and Education Area. A

little over a decade ago, Bilbao did not appear in any international tourist guides and on the rare occasions it earned a mere mention, it was described as an ugly, grey, industrial city. Nobody might have predicted back in the dark 1990s that Bilbao would be capable of making a name for itself on international tourist circuits and become a city attracting travellers from all over the world.

Opening the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao in October 1997 detonated this interest and although many dismissed this unusual international repercussion as a passing curiosity, it is true to say that there is so much more to Bilbao than the spectacular museum designed by Frank O. Gehry and it has demonstrated itself capable of seducing any visitors.

The industrial reconversion processes, replacing the metal industry and shipbuilding traditions with new, industrial, higher added value work producing less pollution, plus all the hard work and investments that have gone into urban regeneration carried out in parallel, have turned the city into a benchmark for urban revitalisation.

Today, alongside avant-garde projects accomplished by the world's most prestigious architects, the city can reveal all the charm of its history and its cosmopolitan tradition. This is demonstrated by the latest data compiled last July, once again indicating a 2.5% increase in the number of visitors compared to the same period the year before and, more relevantly, sustained growth particularly concerning foreign tourists, up by 23.4%, with overnight stays increasing by over 15%.

La inauguración del Museo Guggenheim Bilbao en octubre de 1997 fue el detonante de ese interés y, aunque muchos auguraban a esa insólita repercusión internacional una curiosidad efímera, lo cierto es que Bilbao es mucho más que el espectacular museo diseñado por Frank O. ace poco más de una década Bilbao no aparecía en las guías turísticas internacionales y, en las escasas ocasiones que merecía una mención, era descrita como una fea ciudad gris industrial. Nadie hubiera predicho en los oscuros años 90 que Bilbao sería capaz de hacerse un hueco en los circuitos turísticos internacionales y convertirse en una ciudad que atrae a viajeros de todo el mundo.

El proceso de reconversión industrial, que sustituyó las tradicionales industrias del metal y la construcción naval por nuevas actividades industriales de mayor valor añadido y menos contaminantes, y todo el esfuerzo y las inversiones realizadas para la regeneración urbana llevada a cabo paralelamente, han convertido a la ciudad en un referente de revitalización urbana y hoy, junto a los vanguardistas proyector acometidos por los arquitectos más prestigiosos del mundo, la ciudad revela todo el encanto de su historia y su tradición cosmopolita.

Así lo demuestran los últimos datos recogidos el pasado mes de julio, que nuevamente indican un incremento del 2,5% en el numero de visitante respecto al mismo período del año anterior y, lo que es más relevante, un crecimiento sostenido que tiene aun mayor relevancia en lo que respecta a los turistas extranjeros cuyo número se incremento en un 23,4%, con un aumento de las pernoctaciones que supera el 15%.

Bilbao es hoy el principal destino turístico del País Vasco y representa el 30% del turismo vasco. A ello ha contribuido decisivamente la evolución favorable de mercados emisores tradicionales como Alemania, Estados Unidos y Canadá, Francia, Reino Unido y Bélgica, donde Bilbao Turismo viene trabajando desde hace años en la promoción de la ciudad.

e los muchos espectáculos que la naturaleza ofrece, la contemplación del mar es sin duda uno de los más seductores. Para cualquiera que nace en la costa y se traslada a vivir tierra adentro. La nostalgia del mar ocupa es un sentimiento ineludible. Y es que la mar ofrece panoramas intensos, vivos y cambiantes que nos transportan de la serenidad a la bravura, de la placidez a la incertidumbre.

Y nada tan imponente como un mar embravecido que despliega en sus olas furiosas todo el poder de la naturaleza. Coincidiendo con los equinocios que se producen a principios de otoño y primavera, tiene lugar las mareas vivas, la oscilación más extrema entre el nivel de la pleamar y la bajamar, que induce el plenilunio en estos periodos. Cuando ruge el temporal, coincidiendo con este fenómeno, las olas se encrespan y rompen con estruendo contra la abrupta costa vizcaína o se adentran desde la playa

LAST MONDAY IN OCTOBER, GERNIKA'S MARKET IS LIKE NO OTHER

M

onday has been market day in Gernika for time immemorial.

Now a symbol of peace immortalised by Picasso after the fateful raid (occurring on a Monday), the town is the most important municipality in the Urdaibai district.

The fertile valley that opens up in the Urdaibai estuary, the mouth of the River Oka, has for many centuries been an eminently agricultural and livestock district although boats have also been built in the shipyards on its banks since olden days.

Until not very long ago, Monday were almost more of a festival day than Sunday for the people of Gernika because after a busy morning at market, attended by everyone from the district’s homesteads, many of them went to eat at the taverns and restaurants in the town and ended up watching a game of cesta punta (Basque version of fives catching and throwing the ball using a curved basket) in the Jai-Alai pelota court, for decades the largest court in the world.

Monday's market has lost its festivities. Even so, Gernika fair is the most important in Bizkaia, particularly relevant on Mondays in October.

On the threshold of winter’s austerity, the stalls offer some of the area’s most emblematic products, such as green peppers or Basque cuisine’s legendary beans.

Each year on the last Monday in October, Gernika recovers all the splendour of yesteryear and puts on a festival bringing together more than 100,000 people from all over Bizkaia, come to look at the display of fruit and vegetable stalls, the prime livestock sale and the cheese competition, where the winning entry is auctioned off for charity.

Numerous food stalls, popular crafts, street music and the cesta punta matches at the pelota court provide entertainment making the festival last well into the night.

Every year Euskotren add more trains to the service between Bilbao with Gernika, leaving from Atxuri station the last Monday of October.

Due to its symbolic nature and its history, Gernika is worth a visit any day of the year and the last Monday in October is an exceptional occasion.

AUTUMN IN THE BIZKAIA COUNTRYSIDE

W

hen we get into the interior of Bizkaia, we find a sheer, abrupt and beautiful landscape. Big extensions, high mountains and deep valleys make it a viewpoint area, where myths, legends, art and gastronomy endure. In short, we encounter a space of a great degree of natural conservation, where history and culture turn it into one of the most pleasing areas of the Basque geography.

The natural parks of Urkiola and Gorbeia constitute the southern axe of the territory, whereas the peaks of Ranero and the Ordunte Mountains close with their heights the northwestern side of the land of Bizkaia.

Besides that, Orduña, located between Burgos and Alava, possesses a spectacular landscape full of possibilities and natural amusements.

They are three geologically different areas that, nevertheless, respond to a common variable.

Their proximity to Bilbao will determine a better or worse environmental conservation.

Surprisingly, the passage from an industrial medium to a natural one is made almost without transition. In a few kilometres we will find locations where nature is preserved in the most exceptional way.

In the Encartaciones, Bizkaia´s less populated region, we find Karrantza. Its economy is based in stockbreeding and the forest sector.It is considered the jewel of the Northwest: mounts, rocks and pastures shared out in a rural environment, in which we can watch birds and caves as the Pozalagua ones. At the same time, the Parque de Recuperación de Animales y Fauna Ibérica del Karpín (a Park for the Animal Preservation), allows us to see a complete sample of wild animals in its installations. The Gorbeia Natural Park, the biggest one in Bizkaia and in Euskadi, is a series of mountains, paths, woodlands, rivers, pastures and brooks. It owns the biggest peak in the territory, the mount Gorbeia of m. 1481. The emblematic species of Gorbeia is the deer: in mid-September the males fight against each other for the possession of the females harems.

The protected biotopo of Itxina, a karstic area with spectacular walls, is another element of the greatest visual interest.

T

he town of Gorliz lies on the western Basque coast, 25 km east of Bilbao. Its 10.29 square kilometres belong to the Uribe district. The green meadows and blue tones of the sea splash their beautiful colours across this area, blessed with a gentle climate and pleasant temperatures all year round.

Currently, Gorliz is home to a population of more than 5,200 (quadrupling in the summer) spread throughout the different areas of the town: Elexalde, Aguirre, Urezarantza, Gandia, Areatza and Guzurmendi. The location's economy is fundamentally based on the service sector, primarily tourism.

Gorliz is well connected by road with the main nearby towns such as Getxo, along the BI-634, Bakio along the BI-3151, Mungia along the BI2120, and it is just 20 minutes from the airport. In addition, a bus route links the town up with the Metro station every 20 minutes coinciding with all metro arrivals and departures (Bilbao Metro line 1) and there is another bus route to Lemoiz (Armintza) and Getxo (Areeta) every hour.

n la costa occidental vasca se encuentra el municipio de Gorliz, a 25 kms al este de Bilbao. LA VIRGEN DE BEGOÑA EN EL ALMA DE LOS BIZKAITARRAS

E

s tan hondo y arraigado el afecto que no solo los bilbaínos, sino todos los vizcaínos sienten por la Virgen de Begoña, que incluso aquellos que no profesan firmes convicciones religiosas son sinceros devotos de la “Amatxu de Begoña”. De hecho, aunque la coronación canónica y el reconocimiento como patrona de Bizkaia por la iglesia no se produjeron hasta el año 1900, las Juntas Generales del Señorío, reunidas en Gernika, proclaman a la Virgen de Begoña como Patrona y Abogada del Señorío en 1738. Aunque los actos más festivos en honor a la Virgen de Begoña se celebran el 15 de agosto, día de la Asunción, es el 11 de octubre la fecha designada específicamente para la festividad de la Virgen de Begoña.

El Santuario de Begoña se asienta sobre una colina que domina el angosto valle que constituye el estuario de la ría del Nervión, en la antigua anteiglesia del mismo nombre a la que pertenecía, hasta su fundación como villa, la aldea de Bilbao. Finalmente, la pujanza económica de Bilbao desencadenó, con el tiempo, la absorción por parte de la villa no solo de la anteiglesia de Begoña sino de todas las anteiglesias colindantes: Abando, Deusto, Indautxu, etc.

La construcción de la actual Basílica, de estilo gótico, se inició en el año 1500 y su construcción se prolongo a lo largo de todo el siglo XVI aunque existen documentos del año 1.300 que acreditan la existencia de una iglesia o ermita previa que ocupaba el lugar probablemente desde el siglo XI. A lo largo de su historia, y debido a su ubicación estratégica sobre la ciudad, la iglesia ha sufrido derribos y destrozos sucesivos y posteriores reconstrucciones, tanto tras la guerra de la independencia como tras las guerras carlistas.

Al regreso de sus viajes, cuando los barcos que remontaban la ría para atracar en el puerto de Bilbao llegaban a la altura del meandro que frente al Museo Guggenheim modifica la trayectoria de la ría, Los marinos rezaban una Salve a la Virgen de Begoña en este punto, desde el que por primera vez podían divisar el santuario, hecho que da nombre a la plaza frente al museo diseñado por Frank Gehry y al puente

que se eleva sobre ambas orillas. La visita a Begoña el 11 de Octubre es una cita obligada para mucho bilbaínos y vizcaínos y una fecha muy propicia para aquellos visitantes que quieran disfrutar del ambiente de romería que anima las inmediaciones. Una ruta de acceso con parti-

cular encanto es la que asciende a Begoña desde la Plaza de Unamuno, donde se sitúa la estación del metro del Casco Viejo y de la que parten las Calzadas de Mallona, que desembocan, tras pasar frente al pórtico del antiguo cementerio, ante la Basílica de Begoña.

THE VIRGIN OF BEGOÑA IN THE SOUL OF BIZKAIA

he emotion felt for the Virgin of Begoña, not only by natives of Bilbao but everyone from Bizkaia, is so profound and deep-rooted that even people with no firm religious conviction are sincere devotees of "Amatxu de Begoña".

On returning from their trips, when the boats going back up the ria to moor in the port of Bilbao reached the height of the meander modifying its route opposite the Guggenheim Museum, sailors used to pray to the Virgin of Begoña at this point.

In fact, although her canonical coronation and recognition as patron saint of Bizkaia by the church did not take place until 1900, the General Council of the Lordship, meeting in Gernika, proclaimed the Virgin of Begoña as their Patron Saint, protected by the Lordship in 1738.

This is the first place where it is possible to make out the sanctuary, giving its name to the square opposite the museum designed by Frank Gehry and the bridge crossing from bank to bank.

Although the events in honour of the Virgin of Begoña are held on 15th August, day of the Assumption, 11th October is the date specifically set aside to celebrate the Virgin of Begoña.

The Begoña Sanctuary stands on a hill looking over the narrow valley of the Nervión ria estuary, in what used to be its elizate or district going by the same name, until the village of Bilbao became a town. In the end, Bilbao's economic strength led over time to part of the town absorbing not only the elizate of Begoña but all the adjacent elizates: Abando, Deusto, Indautxu, etc.

A visit to Begoña on 11th October is compulsory for many people in Bilbao and Bizkaia and a worthy date in the diary for any visitors wishing to enjoy the lively pilgrimage atmosphere all around.

TIENDAS DE PORTALES, RINCONES DE OTRO TIEMPO

on una especie en extinción. Apenas quedan una docena, diseminada por las calles del Caso Viejo de Bilbao y están llamadas a desaparecer, pero son el testimonio aun vivo de una época pujante en la vida de la ciudad. Son las tiendas de los portales. Como polizones que se acurrucan en el umbral de las casas antiguas de las 7 Calles, adosadas a lo largo de las paredes de los, de por sí, estrechos portales de las fincas centenarias, estas diminutas tiendas de apenas 4 o 5 metros cuadrados, son un desafío a las leyes de la física, dando cobijo al comerciante, su mercancía, los clientes y los vecinos que suben y bajan transitando por el portal, como si gozaran de una elasticidad misteriosa. En la segunda mitad del siglo XIX y principio del XX Bilbao vivió una explosión demográfica desencadenada por la pujante minería y la nueva industria siderúrgica que confinó al hacinamiento a los habitantes de la pequeña villa que era entonces Bilbao y que abarcaba apenas lo que hoy es el Casco Viejo, hasta que entrado ya el siglo XX se produjo la anexión de la anteiglesia de Abando, donde se desarrollo el ensanche Bilbaíno.

En esa coyuntura, artesanos y comerciantes se disputaban el poco espacio disponible para instalar sus negocios. Estas tiendas, nacidas en aquel contexto, han sido el origen y

T sustento de muchos negocios familiares, regidos por la relación cálida de vecindad propia de un tiempo en que la actividad comercial se basaba en la atención cuidada y las relaciones humanas que se prolongaban en el tiempo. La necesaria rehabilitación de las fincas que acogen todavía hoy algunas de estas pequeñas tiendas y la legítima aspiración de comodidad de los nuevos vecinos que las habitan, marcan el horizonte final de esta forma de comercio centenaria y llena de encanto.

These shops, created in these cramped conditions, started and supported many family businesses, based on warm neighbourly relations worthy of a time when trading revolved around looking after your customers in lasting relationships.

The necessary renovation of the estates that still are home to some of these tiny shops today and the new neighbours' legitimate aspiration for comfort mark the end of the road for this charming, centuryold form of trade.

GASTÓN Y DANIELA: DE BILBAO AL MUNDO

E

n una finca señorial, junto a la Catedral de Santiago, en la calle Correo de Bilbao, Domingo Blanchard, un comerciante francés de Bayona, inauguró en 1867, la tienda de Gastón y Daniela. En un Bilbao en expansión que, tras los años de guerras carlistas, vivía un período de intenso despegue industrial y pujanza económica, una floreciente burguesía, muy cosmopolita para la época, demandaba productos sofisticados y exclusivos.

Fue el sobrino de Domingo Blanchard, Gastón Poirier, quien tras hacerse cargo del negocio junto a su esposa Daniela Bolívar, dio un nuevo impulso al negocio abriendo una nueva tienda en la calle Tendería. La tienda de Tendería, cerrada recientemente, se especializó en tejidos para ropa y mercería, mientras que la de Correo sería el origen de la firma de tejidos de tapicería y alfombras que, nacida en aquel Bilbao de finales del siglo XIX, se ha convertido hoy en una firma global, con más de 60 tiendas y cuyos tejidos de diseño propio se comercializan hoy en las tiendas más exclusivas del sector en todo el mundo.

Ya en la década de los años 50 del siglo pasado se hace cargo del negocio el nieto de Gastón Poirier, Guillermo Wakonigg, un hombre cosmopolita con vivas inquietudes intelectuales y enorme sensibilidad artística, que supo incorporar a su negocio. En su casa, sita en el edificio de la calle Correo que alberga la tienda, organizaba funciones de teatro y lectura de poesía en sesiones con algunos de los artistas más pujantes de la época.

La tupida hiedra que durante décadas cubría la fachada de esta preciosa casa señorial de amplios miradores y el loro que convivía plácidamente en el local con la actividad comercial, dieron lugar a la imagen de ramas de la verde enredadera y al estampado con imágenes de loros que han configurado la imagen de identidad corporativa de la firma.

Sus inquietudes artísticas impulsarían a Guillermo Wakonigg ha implicar a artistas de las tendencias más vanguardistas de su tiempo en las actividades de su negocio y así convocó, por ejemplo, un concurso de bocetos para estampados en los que participaron artistas como Milla-

res, Feito, Canogar, Mignoni, Cesar Manrique, Berrocal, Elizalde, Arcadio Blasco, Lucio Muñoz, Paredes. Años más tarde, en la década de los sesenta, Rafael Solbes, que formó junto a Manuel Valdés el Equipo Crónica, diseñó para la firma una serie de obras que encajaban a la perfección con su estilo; en ellas, se empleó la estética e iconografía del “pop art” para formular una crítica irónica sobre el arte y la sociedad.

Hoy, la tienda de la calle Correo ha quedado desvinculada de la corporación que despliega su franquicia por un extenso mapa comercial y ocupa tan solo una porción de la finca en que nació.

Tampoco la hiedra cubre ya la fachada de la casa de la calle Correo, pero siglo y medio después de su nacimiento aún sigue en este rincón del Casco Viejo esta tienda que surgió en Bilbao para extenderse por el mundo.

GASTÓN Y DANIELA: FIRST BILBAO THEN THE WORLD

I

n an ancestral estate, next to St James' Cathedral in Calle Correo in Bilbao, Domingo Balnchard, a French trader from Bayonne, opened the Gastón y Daniela shop in 1867. Bilbao was expanding quickly after the Carlist war years, undergoing a period of intense industrial and economic boom, with a blossoming bourgeoisie. It was very cosmopolitan for the time and people wanted sophisticated, exclusive products.

Domingo Blanchard's nephew, Gastón Poirier, took over the business with his wife Daniela Bolívar and boosted the business by opening a new shop in Calle Tendería.

“Ibiza” M. Millares

The shop on Tendería, recently closed, specialised in dressmaking and needlework fabric, whilst the shop on Correo housed the upholstery and carpet side of the firm that, whilst set up in late 19th century Bilbao, has now become a global firm with over 60 shops.

Today their personally designed fabrics are sold in the sector's most exclusive shops all over the world.

In the 1950s, Gastón Poirier's grandson, Guillermo Wakonigg, took over the business. He was a cosmopolitan man with a lively intellect and an enormous artistic sensitivity that he brought into the business.

At his home, in the Calle Correo building also housing the shop, he organised plays and poetry readings in sessions attended by some of the most popular artists of the time. The dense ivy that for decades covered the facade of this beautiful mansion with wide windowed balconies and the parrot that lived placidly on the premises as the shop went about its business provided the image of green interwoven leaves and the parrot pattern that made up the firm's corporate logo.

His artistic concerns drove Guillermo Wakonigg to implicate the period's most avant-garde artists in his business activities and so, for example, he set up a pattern sketching contest including participation from artists such as Millares, Feito, Canogar, Mignoni, Cesar Manrique, Berrocal, Elizalde, Arcadio Blasco, Lucio Muñoz, Paredes.Years later, in the 1960s, Rafael Solbes, one half of Equipo Crónica working with Manuel Valdés, designed a series for the firm that perfectly matched their style; they used the aesthetics

and iconography of "pop art" to formulate an ironic criticism of art and society. Today, the shop in Calle Correo no longer belongs to the corporation that works its franchise over an extensive area and it only takes up a small portion of the estate where it came into being. Nor does the ivy still cover the facade of the house on Calle Correo but a century and a half after it all began, this shop still remains in this corner of the Old Town, emerging from Bilbao to travel the four corners of the globe.

FERIA DE SANTO TOMÁS: EL MEJOR PRÓLOGO DE LA NAVIDAD

I

nundada ya la ciudad del ambiente navideño que las guirnaldas de luces, la decoración de los escaparates, el parque infantil de navidad y las comidas de celebración que amigos y compañeros de trabajo celebran por doquier, en las vísperas del día de Navidad, el 21 de diciembre, se celebra en Bilbao y en otros lugares del País Vasco, como Donostia, Mondragón o Azpeitia, la feria de Santo Tomás, una de las celebraciones más concurridas y entrañables del calendario festivo en Euskadi.

La feria que antaño se llevaba a cabo en el recinto de la Plaza Nueva ha ido creciendo en afluencia tanto de público como de puestos de vendedores que ofrecen los mejores productos de la huerta, aves y alimentos de elaboración tradicional, y actualmente los más de trescientos puestos de venta que se instalan ese día se extienden no solo por Plaza Nueva sino que ocupan ya todo el Arenal bilbaíno.

La fiesta tiene su origen en la antigua costumbre

La buena comida, la música y el espíritu alegre de los días navideños, congregan cada año a más de 100.000 personas en esta cita que comenzó siendo un mercado matinal y que ahora se prolonga hasta el anochecer.

Es costumbre este día además, el sorteo del cerdo de la Misericordia, un animal cebado expresamente para esta rifa tradicional a beneficio de este asilo centenario que hoy es parte de los servicios sociales que ofrecen las instituciones públicas, pero que nació como establecimiento de beneficencia en

delos caseros, arrendatarios de los caseríos de las áreas rurales, de acudir ese día a la capital a pagar las rentas anuales a los propietarios que, a menudo, vivían en la capital. Aprovechando el viaje, muchos aldeanos, traían sus mejores productos que encontraban una clientela propicia en los días de celebraciones de la navidad. Hoy en día aún, los puestos ofrecen capones, chorizos, morcillas, alubias, queso, bacalao, y las mejores frutas y verduras, cuyos productores participan además en un concurso que premia cada año a los mejores.

Aunque no es un día festivo, muchos bilbaínos hacen un hueco en su jornada laboral para acercarse hasta el Casco Viejo y comprar algunos de los productos tradicionales o comer el talo, la tradicional torta hecha con harina de maíz que hacía las veces del pan en los caseríos, relleno de chorizo, morcilla o tocino, los productos típicos de la matanzas que se han realizado ya por San Martin, en noviembre.

ST THOMAS FAIR: THE BEST RUN-UP TO CHRISTMAS

W

hen the city is already glowing with Christmas cheer from the festive street lights, shop window decorations, the children's Christmas amusements and celebratory lunches among colleagues and friends, right before Christmas, on 21st December, Bilbao and other places in the Basque Country such as San Sebastian, Mondrag贸n or Azpeitia hold the St Thomas fair, one of the most popular and endearing celebrations in Euskadi's festival calendar.

The fair used to take place in Plaza Nueva but has grown so much in terms of customers and vendors offering the best products from their vegetable gardens, poultry and traditional food that now over three hundred stalls not only stretch through Plaza Nueva but take up the whole of Bilbao's Arenal area.

The festival originates from the former homesteaders who rented their properties in rural areas.

They used to come to the capital that day to pay their annual rent to the owners who usually lived in the city.

Making the most of the trip, many villagers brought their best products to sell in the days leading up to Christmas.

Nowadays the stalls still offer capons, chorizo, black pudding, beans, cheese, cod and the best fruit and vegetables.

Competitions are held among farmers, awarding prizes to the best products each year.

Although it is not a local holiday, many people from Bilbao make time to get to the Old Town and buy some traditional products or eat 'talo', the traditional cornflour tort cooked instead of bread in the homesteads, stuffed with chorizo, black pudding or bacon, typical products from the 'matanzas' (slaughters) carried out on St Martin's day in November.

Good food, music and the happy spirit of the Christmas holidays attract over 100,000 people each year to what used to be a morning market but now goes on until nightfall. It is also a custom to raffle off the Misericordia pig on St Thomas's day.

It is fattened up just for this traditional draw and the proceeds go to the hundred-year-old residence for old people, now part of the social services offered by public institutions, although it was set up as a charity in the days when public services did not cover these needs.

ERIKA BARAHONA: VIAJE AL PAISAJE INTERIOR

L

a fotógrafa bilbaína Erika Barahona Ede tiene un temperamento excéntrico en el mejor sentido de la palabra, no como una pose deliberada de artista, sino como una actitud vital de discreta originalidad cotidiana.

Conversar con ella es como abrir una infinita caja de pandora en la que casi en cada frase podría iniciarse un relato insólito. Quizá el inusual periplo biográfico de su familia materna, de origen alemán, asentada después en Lituania, haya influido en su personalidad abierta y cosmopolita.

BBT - Su abuelo abrió la primera tienda Kodak en Bilbao, ¿estaba predestinada a la fotografía?

Erika Barahona – Si, creo que sí, y así lo avala la psicogenealogía de la que no había oído hablar hasta hace poco tiempo. Mi abuelo estudió fotografía en París porque un tío suyo le había enseñado previamente en Lituania.

Allí trabajó para Kodak y posteriormente obtuvo la titularidad de la firma en Bilbao, donde abrió el establecimiento en la Calle Colón de Larreátegui. A su muerte, mi abuela y después mi madre, durante un tiempo, se hicieron cargo del negocio. Así que desde mi infancia he vivido inmersa en ese mundo.

BBT – ¿Blanco y negro, o color?

Erika Barahona – Buena pregunta. Antes trabajaba esencialmente en blanco y negro. Ahora sin embargo, la elección la hago en función de lo que fotografío. Cuando llegué a Rumanía, por ejemplo, supe inmediatamente que trabajaría en blanco y negro. Brasil en cambio, exige color. También es cierto que, al contrario de lo que sucedía antes, ahora es técnicamente más complejo trabajar en blanco y negro.

BBT – Es Licenciada en Geografía e Historia, con la especialidad de Historia del Arte y también en Bellas Artes. Ha hecho incursiones en varias disciplinas artísticas – escenografía para teatro, guiones para videos sobre arte, fotografía- ¿con cuál se queda?

Erika Barahona – Durante mis estudios de Historia del Arte aprendí a escribir textos con rigor y, de ahí la transición a los guiones para vídeos sobre arte ha sido natural. He trabajado mucho también en el campo de la Restaura-

ción y la Conservación artística, mi especialidad, en particular en la restauración de frescos, como los del Panteón de San Isidoro, en León, el Palacio de Miguel de Mañara en Sevilla, e incluso en las pinturas al temple del Senado. Lo cierto es que tengo interés por diversos ámbitos aunque mi campo esencial es la fotografía.

BBT – En su obra hay retratos, paisaje, ¿le interesan todos los temas?

Erika Barahona – No hay muchas cosas que no hago, Me interesa el paisaje humano. En el retrato siempre intento que no asome mi identidad, captar la identidad de la persona que retrato. Cuando veo un retrato realizado por Annie Leibovitz, puedo identificar a la autora.

Yo pretendo lo contrario, que mis retratos no tengan un carácter que me identifica. Los personajes que más me interesa retratar son aquellos cuyo trabajo había estudiado en Historia del Arte y a los que no ponía cara.

Muchos artistas conceptuales como Bill Viola o Michelangelo Pistoletto, el máximo exponente del Arte Povera, un movimiento que supuso un importante revulsivo en su momento. En su caso yo esperaba encontrar a un hippy desaliñado, de barba espesa, y me encontré con un venerable anciano de pelo blanco y aspecto de conde de la Toscana. Maravilloso!

BBT – Entre otros ha obtenido, en dos ocasiones, el galardón European Award for Women Photograpers.

Erika Barahona – Si, lo convocaron con el tema Places of Life. En aquel momento estaban a punto de derribar el caserío de mi familia en Deusto para ampliar la carretera de acceso a Bilbao por Enekuri. Volví a ese lugar de mi infancia donde cada habitación tenía las paredes pintadas de forma diferente, con estampados hechos con rodillos de distintos dibujos en lugar de papeles pintados. Hice fotos de cada uno de esos patrones dibujados. Quería fotografiar ese paisaje fascinante de mi memoria.

BBT – Ha vivido y trabajado en muchos lugares. Paris, Berlín, Nueva York. Pero mantiene un vínculo especial con Berlín, donde tiene una casa en la que pasa frecuentes temporadas. ¿Que tiene Berlín?

Erika Barahona – Berlín tiene historia. Mi familia vivió allí. Es una ciudad muy abierta. Des-

pués de la guerra se quedaron aislados. Los intelectuales se fueron y quedó la gente trabajadora y bohemia. Berlín es una ciudad inspiradora, con barrios desiertos abandonados por las tropas ocupantes en su retirada. Cada vez que voy me vuelvo loca. Cuando fui a Berlín por primera vez fui casi con lo puesto para pasar una semana y me quedé seis meses. Sin hablar tan siquiera el idioma comencé a trabajar inmediatamente. Allí las publicaciones no tienen fotógrafos en plantilla, así que tu les ofreces tus fotos y si les gustan te las compran.

Empecé trabajando para revistas como Geo y acabé trabajando para el Senado.

ERIKA BARAHONA: JOURNEY TO AN INNER LANDSCAPE

B

ilbao photographer, Erika Barahona Ede has an eccentric temperament in the best sense of the word, not as a deliberate artist's pose but as a vital attitude of discrete everyday originality. Talking with her is like opening up an infinite Pandora's Box where almost every phrase could initiate an unusual relationship. Maybe the unusual biographic voyage of her mother's family, originally German subsequently settled in Lithuania, influenced her open and cosmopolitan personality.

BBT - You grandfather opened the first Kodak shop in Bilbao. Were you destined to be a photographer?

Erika Barahona - Yes I think I probably was and this is backed up by psycho-genealogy that I didn't hear about until recently. My grandfather studied photography in Paris because an uncle had taught him previously in Lithuania.

He worked for Kodak there and later got the licence for the firm in Bilbao where he opened the shop in Calle Colón de Larreátegui. When he died, my grandmother and later my mother, for a time, took over the business. So I've been immersed in this world since childhood.

BBT - Black and white or colour?

Erika Barahona - Good question. I used to work essentially in black and white. Now, however, my choice depends on what I'm photographing.

When I went to Romania, for example, I knew immediately that I would work in black and white. Brazil on the other hand demands colour. It is also true that, as opposed to before, it is now more technically complex to work in black and white.

BBT - You have a degree in Geography and History, specialising in History of Art and also in Fine Art. You have delved into several

artistic disciplines - theatre sets, scripts for videos on art, photography - what do you like best?

Erika Barahona - When I was studying History of Art, I learnt to write strict texts explaining my transition to scriptwriting for videos on art.

I've also worked a lot in the field of artistic Restoration and Conservation, specialising particularly in restoring frescos such as in the San Isidoro Pantheon in León, the Miguel de Mañara Palace in Seville and even on paintings in the Senate temple. I can say that I am interested in different fields although my essential field is photography.

BBT - Your work includes portraits, landscapes. Are you interested in all topics?

Erika Barahona - There's not much I don't do.

I'm interested in the human landscape. In a portrait I always try to eradicate my identity and capture the identity of the person in the portrait. When I see a portrait by Annie Leibovitz, I can identify the author. I aim to do the opposite, making sure that my portraits do not

have anything to identify me by. The characters that I am most interested in portraying are people whose work I had studied in History of Art who I can't put a face to: many conceptual artists such as Bill Viola or Michelangelo Pistoletto, the greatest exponent of Arte Povera, a movement that represented an important salutary lesson in its day. As it happened I hoped to find a scruffy hippy with a thick beard but I found a venerable old man with white hair looking like a Tuscan count. Wonderful!

BBT – Among other awards you have twice won the European Award for Women Photographers.

Erika Barahona - The subject was Places of Life. At the time, they were about to pull down my family's homestead in Deusto to widen the access road to Bilbao via Enekuri. I returned to this place of my childhood where each room had its walls painted differently, patterned with different drawings using rollers instead of wall paper. I took photos of each of these

drawn patterns. I wanted to photograph this fascinating landscape of my memory.

BBT - You have lived and worked in many places: Paris, Berlin, New York. But you maintain a special link with Berlin where you have a home and often spend time there. What is it about Berlin?

Erika Barahona - Berlin's got history. My family lived there. It's a very open city. After the war they were cut off. The intellectuals left and all that remained were the working classes and the bohemians. Berlin is an inspirational city with deserted neighbourhoods abandoned by the occupying troops in their withdrawal. I go crazy every time I go there. When I first went to Berlin I went for a week with practically just the clothes on my back. I ended up staying six months. Without even speaking the language, I got work immediately. Publications there do not have photographers on their staff so if you offer your photos and they like them, then they buy them. I started working for magazines such as Geo and I ended up working for the Senate.

he 5th edition of the Grand Slam Chess Masters Final, the tournament considered to be one of the most prestigious in the world, will be held between 24th September and 13th October 2012 in

Bilbao.

The Bilbao Grand Slam Masters Final will feature the world’s top three players. Armenian Levon Aronián, winner of the Tata Steel Tournament in Holland, Norway's Magnus Carlsen and the Russian Vladímir Krámnik as winners at the Tal MemorialMoscow 2011 and the London Classics 2011, respectively. Carlsen is number one in the world and also winner of the latest edition of the Grand Slam Final. Krámnik, on the other hand, has been world champion and won the Final in 2010.

The tournament is played using a double round league system featuring six of the most outstanding world chess masters, selected from among the winners of the world's main chess tournaments. The remaining participants at Bilbao's great chess event, also with direct invitations, are the winners of the Kings' Tournament 2012, from Bazna, Romania; and from Ciudad de Linares, Spain.

The winner of the World Championship duel to be played between Anand and Guélfand next May in Moscow will also receive a direct invitation for the Masters Final 2012. This exceedingly tough classification system, picking the best six contenders in the world, guarantees excellent quality organisation and maintains previous editions' extremely competitive level for the 5th edition of the Grand Slam Chess Final.

CÓMO SE FABRICÓ Y PORQUÉ SE HUNDIÓ EL TITANIC

PUEDEN VERSE EN ESTA EXPOSICIÓN DEL MUSEO MARÍTIMO DE BILBAO, HASTA EL DÍA 31 DE ENERO

E

l 11 de abril de 1912, el Titanic, el buque más grande y lujoso del mundo, partió desde Queenstown, Irlanda, hacia New York, con 2.227 pasajeros a bordo. Cuatro días más tarde, el 15 de abril, a las 2:20a.m., el Titanic desapareció en las gélidas aguas del Atlántico, después de colisionar contra un iceberg. Solo 706 de sus 2.227 pasajeros y tripulación pudieron ser rescatados.

Este suceso ha pasado a la historia como uno de los mayores desastres marítimos acaecidos en tiempos de paz.

La exposición reúne parte de la colección de fotografías provenientes del National Museums Northern Ireland, de Belfast, Irlanda, y algunos documentos pertenecientes al astillero Harland and Wolff, constructor del Titanic. A través de estas imágenes, documentos y paneles descriptivos, el

visitante tiene la oportunidad de conocer cómo se construyó el buque, las razones que provocaron su hundimiento y las lecciones aprendidas como consecuencia de la tragedia.

MUSEO MARÍTIMO RÍA DE BILBAO Está ubicado en lo que fueron las dependencias de los astilleros Euskalduna, en la margen izquierda de la Ría de Bilbao. La Sociedad Euskalduna de Construcción y Reparación de Buques se constituyó en 1900. Y, supuso el arranque de la construcción naval civil moderna en el País Vasco. Después de años de esplendor, Euskalduna anunció su cierre en 1984. La Ría de Bilbao ha experimentado un cambio espectacular estos últimos años. Vuelve a ser protagonista, esta vez como espacio de esparcimiento y ocio. El Museo además de elemento dinamizador de la ciudad y región, pretende conservar y difundir la historia, cultura e identidad de los hombres y mujeres que han vivido en y de la Ría de Bilbao, estrechamente ligada a la tradición marítima.

RMS TITANIC HOW IT WAS BUILT AND WHY IT SANK (APRIL 2012 - JANUARY 2013) AT MUSEO MARITIMO

O

n 11 April, 1912, the Titanic, the largest and most luxurious cruise liners in the world set off from Queenstown, Ireland to New York, with 2,227 passengers on board. Four days later, on 15 April at 2:20 a.m., the Titanic disappeared in the freezing waters of the Atlantic after colliding with an iceberg.

Only 706 of its 2227 passengers and crew were rescued. This event has become one of history's greatest maritime disasters in times of peace.

The exhibit presents part of the collection of photographs from National Museums Northern Ireland, in Belfast, and some of the documents from the Harland and Wolff shipyard, where the Titanic was built.

Through these images, documents and descriptive panels the visitor has the chance to learn about how the ship was built, the events leading to its sinking and the lessons learned as a result of the tragedy.

ilbao is a vital communications and services nucleus that has also become an important shopping route and a hub for trends in art, design, architecture and gastronomy. ZINEBI: ESSENCE OF CINEMA ZINEBI: ESENCIA DE CINE

E

l otoño trae cada año a Bilbao buen cine. Del 16 al 23 de Noviembre se celebra una nueva edición de Zinebi, el certamen de cine documental y cortometrajes que nació en 1959 en la capital vizcaína y que se convierte cada año en un espacio de debate y lugar de encuentro del talento y las tendencias creativas de los creadores cinematográficos.

La sección oficial del certamen cuenta con tres categorías: películas documentales, cortos de ficción y cortos de animación. Además de las películas presentadas a concurso que se disputan los Mikeldi, los galardones otorgados en este festival cinematográfico, el programa incluye además otras secciones fuera de concurso y proyecciones en el auditorio del Museo Guggenheim Bilbao y en la sala BBK. A partir de 1981 el Ayuntamiento de Bilbao se hizo cargo de la organización del certamen y desde el año 2000 el festival emprendió una nueva época que ha contribuido a consolidar su prestigio y su posición como uno de los festivales internacionales más importantes de su especialidad. En la actualidad recibe más de 3.000 inscripciones de películas de unos 90 países para el concurso, al tiempo que dentro de su ámbito territorial propio continúa sirviendo de plataforma a los nuevos realizadores vascos y españoles y de aventajado instrumento para la promoción internacional de un cine que no se agota en la repetición de rasgos estilísticos estereotipados, sino que apuesta por la experimentación formal, la condición híbrida e interdisciplinar de las nuevas producciones culturales y la indagación ética y estética de los cineastas de todo el mundo.

En la nómina de cineastas galardonados a lo largo de los años en este certamen destacan cineastas del calado de Jacques Demy, Richard Lester, Pierre Perrault, Michel Brault, Claude Lelouch, Gian Vittorio Baldi, Fernando Birri, James Blue, Santiago Álvarez, Robert L. he autumn brings great cinema to Bilbao each year.

A new edition of Zinebi will be held from 16th to 23rd November. It is a documentary and short film competition, set up in 1959 in the Bizkaia capital, each year creating a place for debate and a meeting place for talent and creative trends among cinematographic creators.

The competition's official section has three categories: documentaries, fiction shorts and animation shorts. In addition to the films presented for competition vying for the Mikeldi, the awards given at this film festival, the programme also includes other sections out of competition and projects in the Guggenheim Museum Bilbao Auditorium and the BBK room.

From 1981, Bilbao City Council took over the competition organisation and the festival began a new age back in 2000, helping to consolidate its prestige and position as one of the most important international festivals in its specialist field. It currently receives 3000 film entries from around 90 countries for the competition whilst, within its own geographic field, it continues to be a platform for new Basque and Spanish directors and an outstanding international promotion instrument for a type of cinema that does not wear itself out repeating stereotyped stylistic traits, but backs formal experimentation, the hybrid and interdisciplinary aspect of new cultural productions and ethical and aesthetic investigation of filmmakers from all over the world. Filmmakers who have won awards at this competition over the years include names such as Jacques Demy, Richard Les-

IVAÑEZ: MAS DE 150 AÑOS DE TRADICIÓN TURRONERA EN BILBAO

H

ace más de 150 años que Miguel Galiana vino a Bilbao desde Xixona animado por el que fuera alcalde de Bilbao y Diputado General de Bizkaia, Eduardo Victoria de Lecea, al que conoció y quedó prendado por el sabor de aquel producto artesanal y convencido de que en Bilbao, sin duda, aquel turrón encontraría la clientela que sabría apreciarlo.

Y aquel vizcaíno no se equivocó , porque hoy, transcurrido más de 150 años y cinco generaciones después, los descendientes de Miguel y de su hijo Eladio Ivañez después, siguen vendiendo el turrón artesanal que se ha convertido con los años en una seña más de identidad de la navidad bilbaína.

El turrón de Ivañez, con uve, como se subraya cuando se menciona a esta familia turronera en Bilbao, ha estado presente en las mesas navideñas de los bilbaínos generación tras generación, desde que Miguel instalará su tienda primera en el portal nᵒ7 de la calle Bidebarrieta, en el Casco Viejo de Bilbao.

Durante casi cien años, desde 1860 hasta 1954, con el paréntesis de la guerra civil, se vendió este turrón artesano en el portal de Bidebarrieta.

En el año 1954 Eladio Ivañez, abrió un segundo establecimiento en el portal del nᵒ 12 de la calle Correo, la arteria comercial más importante de la villa en aquel entonces.

Desde aquella pequeña tienda compuesta apenas por una vitrina y un mostrador, y la del portal de Bidebarrieta Eladio Ivañez abasteció de los turrones, mazapanes y polvorones imprescindibles en la mesa navideña, a una clientela fiel de fino paladar.

En 1972, se cerró aquella primera tienda que se instalaba en Bidebarrieta cada mes de noviembre hasta la fiesta de reyes y la familia Ivañez siguió atendiendo a su clientela en la calle Correo.

En esta misma calle, hoy son dos los establecimientos donde los descendientes de Miguel Galiana y Eladio Ivañez continúan con la tradición turronera familiar.

Su nieta Adelia García Ivañez y el hijo de esta, Iván, están al frente de la turronería que ocupa los históricos locales de la calle correo nᵒ 12, no ya el portal sino la lonja y el primer piso que en otro tiempo servía de almacén.

En el nᵒ23, cerca de la catedral, otros dos nietos de Eladio Ivañez, Celina y Eladio, siguen también con la tradición turronera familiar instalados en parte de los locales que ocupaba antaño la tienda de Gastón y Daniela.

Ya no son tiendas de temporada que abren sus puertas en vísperas de la navidad y hoy ofrecen, junto con los tradicionales productos navideños, helados artesanos.

Afortunadamente parece que esta ruta del turrón artesano que llego a Bilbao desde Xixona hace más de 150 años tiene todavía mucho recorrido a pesar de la competencia apabullante de las marcas industriales. Una tradición que ha sido capaz de ganarse la lealtad de una ciudad.

IVAÑEZ: OVER 150 YEARS OF MAKING TURRON IN BILBAO

M

iguel Galiana came to Bilbao from Xixona over 150 years ago, encouraged by his acquaintance, thenmayor of Bilbao and Bizkaia General Deputy, Eduardo Victoria de Lecea, who was very taken with the flavour of his hand-crafted product, convinced that this turron (nougat) would find appreciative customers in Bilbao. And he wasn't wrong.

Today, 150 years and five generations later, descendents of Miguel, and subsequently his son Eladio Ivañez, continue to sell hand-crafted turron that has become a Christmas staple in Bilbao over the years.

Ivañez's (spelt with a V as highlighted whenever this turron-making family is mentioned in Bilbao) turron has made its way on to Bilbao's Christmas tables generation after generation, since Miguel set up his first shop in the gateway of number 7 Calle Bidebarrieta, in Bilbao's old town.

For almost one hundred years, from 1860 to 1954, with a break for the civil war, this handcrafted turron was sold at the Bidebarrieta gateway. In 1954, Eladio Ivañez opened a second shop in the gateway of number 12 Calle Correo, the most important shopping street at the time.

From that tiny shop, barely consisting of a shop window and a counter, and the shop at the Bidebarrieta gateway, Eladio Ivañez provided the turron, marzipan and 'polvoron' sweets that no Christmas table can do without to a loyal clientele with a taste for fine food.

In 1972, they closed that first shop that used to open from November until after twelfth night every year although the Ivañez family continued to work their shop in Calle Correo.

In the same street, there are now two shops where the descendents of Miguel Galiana and Eladio Ivañez continue the family turron tradition.

His grand-daughter Adelia García Ivañez and her son Iván are in charge of the turron shop in

the historical premises of Calle Correo no. 12 no longer just at the gateway but taking up the whole shop and the first floor that used to be a storeroom.

At number 23, close to the cathedral, two more of Eladio Ivañez’s grandchildren, Celina and Eladio, also continue the family turron tradition in part of the premises formerly occupied by the Gastón y Daniela shop. They are no longer seasonal shops that only open right

before Christmas as today handmade ice-cream is sold along with the traditional Christmas products.

Fortunately it seems that this hand-crafted turron that came to Bilbao from Xixona more than 150 years ago will be around for a long time to come despite overwhelming competition from industrial brands. This tradition has been capable of winning over a city's entire loyalty.

CONCURSO DE PINTXOS: DE LO BUENO, LO MEJOR DEL 12 AL 21 DE OCTUBRE

E

l Ayuntamiento de Bilbao y la Diputación Foral de Bizkaia, han convocado la decimoquinta edición del concurso de pintxos, que se celebrará del 12 al 21 de octubre y que se convertirá un año más en una plataforma de creatividad y sofisticación en el ámbito de estos manjares de bocado que tapizan las barras de los bares del País Vasco. Por primera vez en esta edición se otorgaran a los premiados un galardón creado específicamente para este concurso, que será un palillo en tamaño real que se entregará en versiones oro, plata y bronce en cada una de las dos categorías.

El objetivo del certamen es generar actividad e impacto económico en la hostelería y el ocio, diversificando la oferta turística. Además se incentivará la participación ciudadana con la elección del “Premio Especial del Público” y también se otorgará un “Premio a la mejor barra de pintxos”, elegida por la Asociación de Hostelería de Bizkaia–Escuela Superior de Hostelería de Artxanda. Por ello, el precio del pintxo, durante la semana de degustación, que se prolongará del 12 al 21 de octubre, será de 1.50 euros. Para designar al merecedor del “Premio Especial del Público”, elegido por los clientes de los establecimientos participantes, estos podrán votar in situ mediante un SMS. En la barra de cada establecimiento también se podrá ver una ficha individual de cada pintxo, en la que figurará el nombre, ingredientes, modo de elaboración, consejos de consumo y maridaje. Dispondrá, además, de código QR y fórmula de voto. Entre los participantes se sorteará un fin de semana para dos personas en un agroturismo de Bizkaia a elegir por la persona premiada.

Los clientes podrán identificar los establecimientos participantes en un mapa que se distribuirá entre los propios locales de hostelería, oficinas de turismo, centros cívicos y otras instituciones. Además, al menos una de las personas que en la semana de la degustación atienda la barra del establecimiento portará el delantal conmemorativo del concurso y en la puerta del local de hostelería se colocará un vinilo adhesivo con la leyenda “Establecimiento participante en el concurso de Pintxos Bilbao Bizkaia Pintxo Txapelketa 2012”.

PINTXO COMPETITION: LA CRÈME DE LA CRÈME Bizkaia Catering Association-Artxanda Senior Catering School. Consequently, during the tasting week from 12th to 21st October, pintxos will cost only 1.50 Euros.

In order to designate the worthy winner of the "Special Public Prize", customers of participating establishments can vote by SMS on the spot. There is also an individual sheet for each pintxo on the counter of each establishment, giving the name, ingredients, how it is made, how it should be eaten and its wine pairing. It will also have a QR code and a voting form.

Participants are entered for a draw with an agrotourism weekend for two in Bizkaia up for grabs.

Participating establishments are marked on a map to be distributed round the main bars and restaurants, tourist offices, civic centres and other institutions.

What's more, at least one of the people working the counter in each establishment during the tasting week will be wearing the competition's commemorative apron and there will be a sticker on the bar door stating that this is an "Establishment participating in the Bilbao Bizkaia Pintxo competition 2012".

The competition includes two participation categories: freestyle pintxo and pintxo featuring a star ingredient, cod in this edition. Each bar can participate in both or just one of the categories of their own choice.

Con referencias de éxito en ciudades como Nueva York, el San Sebastián Gipuzkoa Restaurant Week se plantea a los restaurantes de Gipuzkoa la posibilidad ofrecer menús especiales durante una semana a un precio de 25 euros, donde se ahonde en el concepto de productos de temporada y en elaboraciones reconocidas de la gastronomía vasca.

En 2012 habrá dos ediciones de San Sebastián Gipuzkoa Restaurant Week. En octubre tendrá lugar la segunda de ellas, del 15 al 28. Mientras que de cara a 2013 se realizarán tres. La inicitiva está liderada por San Sebastián Turismo y el Departamenteo de Innovación, Desarrollo Rural y Turismo de la Diputación Foral de Gipuzkoa, con el firme compromiso apoyar la imagen de gastronomía de calidad de Gipuzkoa.
