Vitoria-Gasteiz despliega en verano una amplia programación en la que destacan las Fiestas de La Blanca, citas deportivas y eventos culturales que llenarán la capital vasca de animación y buen ambiente. TriatHlOn Vitoria-Gasteiz Una cita deportiva que discurre por los escenarios más bellos y genuinos de Álava. El punto de salida y llegada de la prueba de natación es la playa de Landa; el circuito de ciclismo discurre por las cuadrillas (comarcas) de la Llanada Alavesa y Gorbeialdea, bordeando el espectacular pantano de Ullíbarri- Gamboa y paralelo a la Sierra de Elgea; y la carrera a pie llevará a los triatletas por los paseos peatonales de Vitoria-Gasteiz, para concluir en la céntrica Plaza España.

El Triathlon Vitoria-Gasteiz es el mayor acontecimiento deportivo de la ciudad. La pasada edición contó con 2.296 triatletas y este año han confirmado su presencia los mejores del ranking nacional, tanto en la distancia Full como en la Half.

Summer in Vitoria-Gasteiz Things to do in the capital this summer

The capital of the Basque Country looks set for a summer of fun thanks to a fullon programme of sports and cultural events featuring the Festival of La Blanca, the highlight of the season. Here are a few ideas to get you started. You’ll find more information in the summer agenda (p. 8 - 11) and on the municipal website: www.vitoria-gasteiz.org/eventos The Vitoria-Gasteiz Triathlon The route takes participants through some of the most beautiful and authentic parts of Alava. The swimming event takes place in the Landa reservoir; while the cycling route goes through the countryside in the Llanada Alavesa and Gorbeialdea regions, bordering the spectacular Ullibarri - Gamboa reservoir and running parallel to the

41st Jazz festival After nearly five decades as a singersongwriter, Rubén Blades has decided to put an end to his career to devote himself to music production and politics.

And to kick off his farewell tour he has

chosen the Vitoria-Gasteiz Jazz Festival, where he is billed as its star closing act.

Other featured acts include Clarke, The Brown Sisters, Patti Austin, TS Monk Sextet... and a selection of female vocalists who’ll be there to present Woman to woman.

In addition to the main Mendizorrotza Sports Centre festival venue, there will be two alternative venues, the Teatro Principal and the NH Canciller Ayala hotel, with their own festival programmes. The streets will be filled with the sound of jazz too. The Lucien Barbarin Street Band will be out and about performing twice daily, at 1pm and 7 pm, for the duration of the festival.

The Vitoria-Gasteiz Triathlon is the city’s largest sporting event. 2.296 participants took part last year and the country’s best triathletes in the Full and Half categories have already signed up for this year’s event.

41 Festival de Jazz Rubén Blades pone fin a una carrera de casi cinco décadas como intérprete, para dedicarse a la política y a la producción musical. Y ha elegido el Festival de Jazz de Vitoria-Gasteiz para arrancar su gira de despedida. Actúa el último día del certamen y será su estrella principal. Eso con permiso de Stanley Clarke, Patti Austin, TS Monk Sextet, The Brown Sisters… y un supergrupo femenino que presentará el proyecto Woman to woman.

Junto a la sede del festival, el Polideportivo de Mendizorrotza, tienes otros dos escenarios con programación propia: el Teatro Principal y el hotel NH Canciller Ayala. ¡Y las calles de la ciudad! Durante los cinco días del festival, La Lucien Barbarin Street Band recorrerá el centro urbano en sendos pases, a las 13 h y a las 19 h.

Fiestas de La Blanca El 4 de agosto, a las 6 de la tarde, en la plaza de la Virgen Blanca, suenan las campanas de San Miguel, se lanza el tradicional txupinazo y baja Celedón.

Una secuencia inalterable desde 1957, que da paso a 6 días de intensa fiesta en las calles. El que desciende desde la torre de San Miguel es un muñeco, que una vez toma tierra se reencarna en un mozo de carne y hueso. Celedón simboliza el espíritu de las fiestas y protagoniza buena parte de sus actos. El propio día 4 y el 5 de agosto concentran la mayoría de citas religiosas, como la Procesión de los Faroles, el Rosario de

Las cuadrillas de blusas y neskas son, para muchos, el alma de las fiestas de Vitoria-Gasteiz. Se trata de grupos (algunos tienen más de 200 miembros) de hombres y mujeres, ataviados con trajes típicos, a los que puedes ver en animados paseíllos, acompañados siempre por sus charangas y ambientando la ciudad durante estos días.

Días antes, el 25 de julio se celebra el Día del Blusa. Es el preludio de las fiestas, una jornada en la que neskas y blusas se visten con traje típico y participan en la carrera de barricas. Otras tradiciones son la compra de ajos en la Cuesta de San Francisco y la celebración de la Feria Agrícola y Ganadera en la zona universitaria.

The ‘Virgen Blanca’ Festival

The ‘Virgen Blanca’ Festival officially starts at 6 pm on August 4 in the Plaza de la Virgen Blanca. The bells of San Miguel ring out and Celedón, the festival mascot, is lowered into the square from the church tower. This tradition has remained unchanged since 1957, and marks the start of six days of intense street partying. The figure that is lowered onto a balcony on Calle Postas is actually a doll, but turns into a human as soon as he ‘lands’. Celedón personifies the spirit of the festival and features in many of its major events. Most of the religious events, including the Procession of Lanterns, the Dawn Rosary, and the floral offering to the Virgen Blanca, take place on August 4 and 5. August 7 is children’s

The festival programme includes hundreds of events including concerts, street parties, theatre, Basque sports, Basque improvised singing competitions (bertsolaris), Basque pelota championships, and children’s activities. In addition, this year is the centenary of the Vitoria-Gasteiz giants’ parade and a number of special events have been arranged to mark the anniversary.

July 25 is Blusa day. In the run-up to the festival, men (‘blusas’) and women (‘neskas’) dressed in traditional costume join in a barrel race, while others make their way up the hill of San Francisco to buy garlic, following an old tradition.

There is also an agricultural and livestock fair in the area surrounding the university

The festival in honour of the ‘Virgen Blanca’, the patron saint of Vitoria, is held from August 4 - 9.

For many, the mixed groups of men and women, known as ‘blusas y neskas’, are the heart and soul of the festivities. Groups of up to 200 people in traditional dress, accompanied by bands of musicians, parade around the city bringing a lively, fun atmosphere wherever they go.

Join in the festival fun: 80,000 people gathered in Plaza de la Virgen Blanca last year to witness Celedón inaugurating the festival. If you prefer to avoid crowds, you can always head to the nearby Plaza España and follow the festivities on television.

rtium, the Basque MuseumCentre of Contemporary Art, Vitoria, celebrates its 15th anniversary this summer with four marvellous exhibitions and a range of other interesting projects. Here are just a few:

When visitors arrive at Artium, they are greeted in the foyer with the tinkling of 14,000 crystals on the ceiling over a curious staircase… but if you follow an imaginary line from the main museum entrance straight across and up the hill to the Old Town, you’ll see Montehermoso: a renaissance palace which houses a cultural centre right in the middle of medieval Vitoria.

Both tours take approximately an hour and a half and finish with a drink and pintxo at “Cube Artium”, the museum restaurant which specializes in modern cuisine featuring traditional ingredients.

A

dentrarse en la Catedral de Santa María de Vitoria-Gasteiz es comenzar una experiencia única y diferente. En ningún otro lugar podrás conocer un edificio de más de 800 años que revela la historia y los orígenes de la aldea de Gasteiz, donde surgió una pequeña iglesia fortaleza que con el paso del tiempo se convirtió en catedral.

La perspectiva de la visita es muy diferente a la habitual, porque se sigue el trabajo que han desarrollado los investigadores durante el proceso de restauración del templo. Los gravísimos problemas estructurales detectados obligaron a elaborar un plan director para cometer una gran obra de restauración que comenzó en el año 2000 y que aún hoy se mantiene. Este largo proceso no ha impedido, sin embargo, que el público haya podido conocer todo el desarrollo de las obras y de los trabajos de investigación.

El novedoso programa ‘Abierto por Obras’ ha permitido que más de 1,5 millones de personas ataviadas con un casco hayan paseado entre andamios y zanjas disfrutando de una perspectiva única.

Ken FolletT y la Catedral de Vitoria La Catedral de Santa María, galardonada con el Premio Especial de la Unión Europea en Patrimonio Cultural en 2002, sirvió de inspiración al escritor galés Ken Follett para escribir ‘Un mundo sin fin’, la segunda parte de su bestseller ‘Los pilares de la tierra’.

De hecho, aquí puedes saludar e incluso sacarte una foto con el novelista. Bueno, con su estatua. Es una obra realizada en bronce, de estilo realista y a tamaño natural, del escultor alavés Casto Solano. Está situada en el Centro de Acogida al Visitante de la Catedral, en la plaza de Burullerías, justo en frente del restaurante El Portalón (una antigua casa de postas del s. XV).

T

he visit to the Cathedral of Santa Maria (Vitoria-Gasteiz) is a truly unique experience. No other tour of an 800-year-old building reveals so much about the history of Vitoria, where a small fortified church eventually became the city’s cathedral.

The tour traces the history of the cathedral by explaining the archaeological discoveries made during the restoration work, offering visitors a highly original

perspective on events. Serious structural deterioration of the cathedral led to the development of a master restoration plan in 2000. Work is still ongoing. The cathedral has remained open throughout this time, allowing visitors to see how the work is progressing. So far, the ‘Open for Restoration Work’ exhibition tour has attracted over 1.5 million visitors who have walked along trenches and scaffolds (equipped with hard hats), viewing the cathedral from a completely new angle.

Ken Follett and Vitoria Cathedral Awarded a European Union Prize for Cultural Heritage in 2002, the Cathedral of Santa María inspired Welsh novelist Ken Follett’s to write ‘World without End’, the sequel to his best-selling ‘Pillars of the Earth’.

There is a life-size bronze statue of the writer by local sculptor Casto Solano located on Catredral’s visitors centre, on Plaza de Burullerías (opposite the converted 15th century coaching in restaurant El Portalón).

Tourists can often be seen posing for photos next to the statue.

Located less than one hour from Bilbao, San Sebastian and Rioja Alavesa, the cathedral offers guided tours in several languages and is fully accessible for people with disabilities.

s la it girl vitoriana del momento aunque ella odia este término.

Pero lo cierto es que los videos y fotos de Sara Baceiredo arrasan en las redes sociales: tiene más 200.000 seguidores en Instagram y 230.000 en Youtube. Todo empezó hace menos de dos años cuando creó un blog para contar a la familia sus andanzas por la costa oeste de Estados Unidos. Ahora, con 18 años, estudia liderazgo, emprendimiento e innovación en la Universidad de Mondragón, mientras sigue publicando sus fotos y videos con un tremendo éxito. ¿La localidad más bonita de Álava?

VITORIA, me encanta vivir aquí. Es cómoda, se puede ir a cualquier parte andando o en bici. Es perfecta para gente joven. De mayor, si no es en Vitoria, quiero vivir en una ciudad como ésta. ¿El mejor plan en Vitoria?

Lo mejor es ANDAR y ANDAR. Perderte por Vitoria, callejear. O coger una bici y pedalear por al ANILLO VERDE. ¿Dónde te harías una foto para colgar en tu Instagram?

El CASCO VIEJO, siempre termino allí haciéndome fotos. Un sitio buenísimo es la terraza con vistas a la PLAZA DEL MATXETE que está pegada al Gaztetxe

(centro sociocultural okupado y autogestionado por jóvenes). El PARQUE DE LA FLORIDA es otro lugar precioso. ¿Tus tiendas favoritas de Vitoria?

ZARA, por supuesto, y BREDA, que es una heladería local con unos helados riquísimos (hay tres: en la Plaza del General Loma, en la calle Dato y en Portal del Rey, en el Casco Viejo). ¿Tus sitios de pintxos preferidos?

Con mis amigos siempre voy al pintxopote de los jueves. Los champiñones del bar BARRÓN (c/ Pintorería) en la parte vieja, los pido a menudo. El PUERTA GRANDE, cerca en la plaza de toros, es un local muy agradable por el espacio y la variedad de los pintxos. ¿Qué restaurante te gusta?

El CÓMEME (c/ Zapatería) es relativamente nuevo y mis amigas y yo compartimos los nachos con queso y el wok de verduras. Soy muy fan de la PINTOZZERIA (pizzeria en la calle Pintorería).

También vamos a los gastrobares de la PLAZA DE ABASTOS. ¿Por la noche, por dónde te mueves por Vitoria?

No soy nada fiestera pero siempre que salgo voy a LA KUTXI (c/ Kutxilleria).

¿Qué es lo más divertido de Álava?

Jajaja, el TXUPINAZO de las fiestas de Vitoria en agosto, el paseillo, salir de noche y dormir de día.

Sara Baceiredo, Vitoria’s ‘It’ girl ALAVALOVERS

S

he’s Vitoria’s ‘It’ girl of the moment even though she hates the label. But the truth is that with 200,000 followers on Instagram and 230,000 on YouTube, Sara Baceiredo’s videos and photos have caused a huge social media sensation.

It all started less than two years ago with a blog. She was holidaying along the Pacific Coast and began a blog so her family could keep up with her adventures. Now eighteen and studying Entrepreneurial Leadership and Innovation at the University of Mondragon in the Basque Country, Sara continues to post photos and videos which become overnight successes.

What’s the most beautiful spot in Alava?

VITORIA, I love living here. Life is so easy here, you can walk and cycle everywhere. It is great for young people.

Even if I don’t end up living in Vitoria for the rest of my life, I’d like to live somewhere like it.

Name a fun thing to do in Vitoria?

GO FOR A WALK and don’t stop. Keep walking. Lose yourself in the city. Or rent a bike and go cycling on the GREENWAY that surrounds the city.

Where would you take a photo for Instagram?

In the OLD QUARTER, I always end up taking pictures there. The terrace overlooking PLAZA DEL MATXETE is a great spot. It is right next to the Gaztetxe (a social and cultural centre occupied and run by young people). PARQUE DE LA FLORIDA is another good place for photos.

Where do you like to shop in Vitoria?

Well, ZARA of course, and I love BREDA too. It’s a local ice cream parlour which sells amazing ice cream (in fact they have three stores: one in Plaza General Loma, another in Calle Dato and one in Portal del Rey, in the Old Quarter).

What about your favourite pintxo bars?

I always go out with my friends on Thursdays because that’s when the bars offer cut-price pintxos and drinks. It’s called ‘pintxopote’. We often go to BAR BARRON (Calle Pintorería) in the Old Quarter where I always order the mushrooms. PUERTA GRANDE, near the bullring, is really nice.

It’s quite big and they have a good selection of pintxos.

What is your favourite restaurant?

CÓMEME (Calle Zapatería) is quite new, and my friends and I have shared nachos with cheese and the vegetarian wok. I also love PINTOZZERIA (a pizzeria on Calle Pintorería). We also like going to the gastropubs in PLAZA DE ABASTOS. Where do you go out at night in Vitoria?

I’m not really into partying, but whenever I do go out, I head for KUTXI (Kutxilleria street, in the Old Quarter).

What is the most fun in Alava?

[Laughing] My favourite is the VITORIA FESTIVAL WEEK which takes place in August. I love the TXUPINAZO ceremony which marks the beginning of the festivities, the parade into the bullring, and staying out all night and sleeping all day.

na naturaleza bien conservada y fácilmente accesible; un rico patrimonio histórico; playas de interior ¡con bandera azul!; numerosas actividades y experiencias que entusiasmarán a los más txikis, y mucha, mucha tranquilidad. Álava es un destino ideal para las familias este verano. En 2017 puedes recorrerla de la mano de Barraskillo y Perretxin, dos simpáticos guías que te llevan por los principales recursos turísticos de la capital, VitoriaGasteiz, y las comarcas alavesas, que aquí se llaman ‘Cuadrillas’. Hay un sinfín de posibilidades diferentes. Te proponemos tres: para amantes de las playas, para golosos y/o salados, y para artistas.

PLAYAS DE AGUA dulce Álava no tiene mar pero su riqueza de agua dulce es grandiosa. Sus pantanos, además de abastecernos, también son un paraje de diversión. Puedes acercarte a los embalses de Maroño, Urrunaga y Ullíbarri-Gamboa. Incluso a sus playas,

eso sí, de agua dulce. La de Landa y la de Garaio (muy cerca una de otra) cuentan con la bandera azul por la calidad de sus aguas y los servicios que incluyen; entre otros, insfraestructuras adaptadas para personas con movilidad reducida.

Por todo el territorio encontrarás ríos aptos para un chapuzón y piscinas fluviales (naturales) como las de Zumalde o Fresnedo, en la Montaña Alavesa.

Si prefieres un lugar donde disfrutar del agua con plena seguridad, tirarte por sus toboganes y jugar en sus instalaciones recreativas, en Vitoria-Gasteiz dispones de los complejos de Gamarra y Mendizorrotza. ¡Son una maravilla los días de calor!

Además, si te gustan los deportes náuticos, en el embalse de Urrunaga puedes practicar remo, windsurf, vela ligera y pesca deportiva; el de Albina es perfecto para piragüismo y el de Ullíbarri-Gamboa para kayak, esquí acuático y vela. También puedes dar un paseo en kayak en el río Ebro desde Lapuebla de Labarca.

Whether you fancy exploring Vitoria or the surrounding countryside, the possibilities are endless. Here are some suggestions for beach lovers, foodies and artists.

Inland beaches Although Alava is not on the coast, the region boasts a range of fresh water attractions. Apart from supplying the region’s water, the Maroño, Urrunaga, and Ullíbarri-Gamboa reservoirs are very popular recreational areas thanks to their beaches. Located near each other, the Landa and Garaio reservoirs have

been awarded blue flags in recognition of the quality of the water and facilities, including special facilities for people with reduced mobility.

There are rivers and natural pools all over the region where swimming is also permitted. Zumalde and Fresnedo, in the Montaña Alavesa region, are two such examples. For those prefer a more supervised environment, why not try the sports complexes at Mendizorrotza and Gamarra in Vitoria-Gasteiz where you’ll find fun water slides and other sports and recreational facilities? It’s a great outing for a sunny day.

If you like rowing, windsurfing, dinghy sailing or angling, the Urrunaga reservoir is the place for you; while the Albina reservoir is great for canoeing and kayaking, the Ullibarri-Gamboa reservoir offers water skiing and sailing. And don’t miss the chance to go kayaking down the River Ebro. The usual starting point is from Lapuebla de Labarca.

Blue-flag status The quality of the water and the facilities of the reservoirs in Alava has been rewarded with a badge of international approval. Si te pierde EL DULCE. O eres más SALADO Álava es un territorio reconocido por sus productos agrícolas y ganaderos de primer orden que, una vez en manos expertas, se convierten en suculentos manjares. En la zona de Salvatierra, y también en Campezo y Añana, se cultiva una excelente patata. Si vas a Rioja Alavesa, no dejes de probarlas con chorizo o a la riojana. ¡Riquísimas!

Otro plato típico es la alubia pinta alavesa, con el sello de calidad de Eusko Label.

Un producto clave en cualquier plato es la sal y aquí tenemos el Valle Salado de Añana; unas antiguas eras de sal que proceden de la época romana, hoy rehabilitadas, que podrás visitar y disfrutar en familia, con un montón de actividades y talleres diferentes. Igual que la sal, el aceite es imprescindible en la cocina; el de Rioja Alavesa, con la variedad de aceituna autóctona Arróniz, es un virgen extra de primera.

De postre, un poco de queso Idiazabal, una variedad exclusiva de Euskadi y Navarra hecho con leche de oveja latxa o carranzana. Además, si quieres llevarte un recuerdo inolvidable, puedes hacer la experiencia ‘Pastor por un día’. En la Cuadrilla de Gorbeialdea, en plena natu-

raleza, varios pastores y pastoras abren las puertas del baserri (caserío) para mostrar cómo es su día a día y enseñarte su oficio. Caminarás por los pastos donde pace el rebaño y verás una demostración con perro pastor. Después, visita a la quesería y cata del queso elaborado de forma artesanal.

Vitoria-Gasteiz disfruta de gran fama en pastelerías y confiterías.

Prueba las trufas de chocolate, que son únicas.

Siguiendo con los postres, para endulzar cualquier momento nada mejor que la miel de las estribaciones de Gorbeia o la Montaña Alavesa; hay además un Museo de la Miel en Murgia (Cuadrilla de Gorbeialdea), donde puedes probar también la experiencia ‘Apicultor por un día’. Álava, y especialmente Vitoria-Gasteiz, disfruta de gran fama en pastelerías y confiterías. Prueba las trufas de chocolate, que son únicas.

Para los mayores, imprescindibles los txakolis del valle de Ayala o los vinos de Rioja Alavesa, de prestigio internacional.

Para conocer este mundo fascinante y tan de moda, tienes el Museo-granja de Remelluri con lagares rupestres o el Centro temático del Vino en Laguardia.

Sin moverte de Rioja Alavesa, puedes dar una vuelta para ver las bodegas modernas firmadas por arquitectos de renombre como Frank Gerhy, Calatrava o Mézières.

Una forma muy divertida de conocer la comarca es subir al Racimo tren.

TOMA NOTA Date un premio y prueba el goxua, un delicioso dulce típico alavés. Si estás por aquí en agosto, puedes disfrutar de la tarta Virgen Blanca. Y por San Prudencio (28 de abril), fiesta del patrón de Álava, revuelto de perretxikos (famosos hongos, muy delicados) y caracoles en su exquisita salsa. ¡Son un manjar!

Have you got a sweet or savoury tooth?

Alava is renowned for producing excellent meat and vegetables which can, in expert hands, become authentic culinary works of art. The potatoes from Salvatierra, Campezo and Añana are also highly prized. If you visit Rioja Alavesa, make sure to try them with chorizo or a la riojana. You won’t regret it!

Another favourite is the Alava pinto bean, which carries the Eusko Label seal of quality and is often served in bean stews.

A key ingredient in any dish is salt, and Alava has its own ancient salt flats located in the Añana Salt Valley; the salt flats date back to Roman times and have recently been fully restored and are open for visits. The centre also offers a range of activities and workshops suitable for the whole family. Another essential cooking ingredient everywhere is oil, and in Rioja Alavesa you’ll find extra virgin olive oil made locally with the native Arróniz variety of olives.

What better than a piece of Idiazabal cheese for dessert? Made with milk from the native latxa and carranzana sheep, Idiazabal cheese is made exclusively in the Basque Country and Navarre. Why not become a ‘Shepherd for a day’ and turn a modest cheese tasting into an unforgettable experience? A number of shepherds in the beautiful Gorbeialdea district open their farmhouses to the public, sharing their way of life and showing visitors how artisan cheese is made. The visit includes a demonstration of a sheepdog herding sheep on the land.

Afterwards, there’s a guided visit of the cheese-making facilities and a tasting.

And to learn about the fascinating world of wine, why not take a trip to the Remelluri Farm-Museum where you can see very old stone grape presses, or visit the Wine Interpretation Centre in Laguardia? There are several ultra-modern wineries in Rioja Alavesa showcasing the work of famous architects such as Frank Gehry, Calatrava and Mézières. A fun way of getting to know the area is to take a ride on the Racimo wine train.

Son dos de los productos más típicos de Álava. Con ellos se elaboran los tradicionales ‘Caracoles en salsa’ (en euskera, caracol es barraskilo) y ‘Revuelto de perretxikos’, una deliciosa seta de primavera.

Son platos que no pueden faltar en las mesas, tanto particulares como de los bares y restaurantes, cuando llega la festividad de San Prudencio (28 de abril), Patrón de Álava.

For art lovers This area boasts a particularly rich artistic heritage, ranging from the unique and beautiful Gothic mural paintings in the churches at Alaiza and Gaceo to world renowned contemporary art.

If you are interested in paintings, make sure to see the collection of excellent 19th and 20th century masterpieces at the Vitoria Fine Arts Museum. The works mostly feature Basque painters such as Zuloaga, Maestu, Amárica and Díaz de Olano. Artium, the city’s contemporary art museum, houses a noteworthy collection of works by prestigious artists such as Dali, Picasso, Miró, Saura and Tapies, and the Basque artists Chillida, Oteiza and Nagel. In the town of Ollerias, there is a Basque Pottery Museum where visitors get their hands dirty at one of the clay workshops.

Why are Barraskillo and Perretxin a snail and a mushroom?

Because they are two of the most traditional food products in Alava. ‘Caracoles en salsa’ (‘Snails in sauce’) is a very popular dish and “barraskilo” is the Basque word for snail. Another popular dish featuring the delicious perretxiko spring mushroom is ‘Revuelto de perretxikos’. These two dishes are staples in any home or restaurant on April 28, the feast of St. Prudence, the patron saint of Vitoria.

A different view of the city A different way to discover Vitoria is by taking a tour of the city’s murals in the Old Quarter and the Zaramaga district.

The work of volunteers, these beautiful and colourful artistic representations of historical events are a wonderful addition to the urban landscape.

U

na gymkhana de un día completo basada en las películas de James Bond! La acción es el hilo conductor de esta aventura donde no faltan ni el vino ni la gastronomía. Retos como convertirte en el agente secreto más glamuroso de la Gran Bretaña, y otros muchos te esperan este verano. Sólo tienes que conocer qué plan se adapta más a tus gustos.

Hay una variedad de experiencias.

Si te va el contacto con la naturaleza puedes recorrer la comarca vitivinícola vasca en un todoterreno y visitar distintos viñedos para aprender cómo se cultivan de manera sostenible, también puedes hacerte “vendimiador por un día” y experimentar todo el proceso de la uva: desde la recogida en viñedo hasta su elaboración en bodega. Conocer la historia de los arrieros mientras pescas truchas y las cocinas, es otra opción entretenida si vas con niños. Aprenderán que durante siglos los caminos de Euskadi han sido transitados por arrieros que llevaban al norte el vino de Rioja Alavesa para traer de vuelta, el pescado en salmuera procedente de los puertos vizcaínos (de ahí que haya un sendero de gran recorrido GR 38 denominado Ruta del Vino y del Pescado).

Si prefieres un plan más “slow”, puedes crear tu propio vino a tu gusto o catarlo con chocolate. También adentrarte en históricos calados del siglo XIV-XV o ha-

cer una cata de vino y maridaje gourmet, con tapas elaboradas con productos locales.

Al final, se trata de disfrutar y descubrir el vino de Rioja Alavesa a través de

James Bond takes on the Rioja Alavesa Wine Route

hat about a one-day multi-activity event with a James Bond theme?

What could be better than an action-packed day with good food and wine included? ? If you’d like to be James Bond for a day or are looking for something different to do, you’ll find lots of interesting ideas.

If you’re into nature, why not explore the Basque wine region in a 4 x 4 off-road vehicle? You can always visit a vineyard and learn about sustainable vine-growing, or pick grapes for a day and see how wine is made from start to finish. Or maybe you’d prefer to go trout-fishing and cook it afterwards as you listen to tales about muleteers; it’s something the kids really enjoy. ASTOBIZA, EL TXAKOLI COSMOPOLITA

S

Í, este vino blanco vasco es un gran aventurero. El txakoli Astobiza -bien frío- ya puede estar realzando el sabor del atún de la almadraba y de la gamba roja en Almería y Cádiz o, mucho más lejos, en Tokio, en los paladares de los sumilleres japoneses; haciendo antes una paradita en Tailandia pasando por Suecia o dando el salto al charco para servirse en una copa en Connecticut. Astobiza también ha conquistado España y en Galicia o en Mallorca es

uno de los txakolís de referencia. Como ven, tiene vocación viajera y está dando la vuelta al mundo: Astobiza ya se vende en 23 países. Según fuentes de la bodega es “mundialmente único” (seco, afrutado, con color, aroma y sin aguja).

Pero todo empezó aquí al lado. El caserío de Señorío de Astobiza data de finales del S. XVIII y las bodegas están situadas en Okondo (al norte de Álava y muy cerquita de Bilbao), en una finca que consta de 10

hectáreas de viñedo propio. Cuenta con una plantación de uva 100% autóctona, variedad Ondarrabi Zuri y Gros Manseng.

Hoy en día Ane y Julen, la tercera generación de la familia Abando , continúan apostando por la misma variedad como elemento diferenciador y además de recoger la uva a mano, han iniciado caminos enológicos complejos con procesos de producción vanguardistas, gracias a la más avanzada tecnología. Astobiza es la única bodega de txakoli que investiga la fermentación en un huevo de hormigón para catar la evolución y expresión del vino que fermenta en un medio natural y sin ningún tipo de control de temperatura.

ASTOBIZA, THE COSMOPOLITAN TXAKOLI

A

stobiza is a well-travelled Basque white wine. While you are likely to find it in Almeria and Cadiz, well-chilled and served with sustainably caught almadraba tuna or prawns, you’re equally likely to find it much further away, tantalizing the palates of Japanese sommeliers in Tokyo, for example; or in Thailand, Sweden or across the water in Connecticut. Astobiza already enjoys a well-deserved reputation in Spain. In Galicia and Mallorca it is considered one of the best Txakolis on the market. But Astobiza has its sights set on the international market where it is currently marketed in 23 countries around the world. According to sources at the winery, this dry, fruity, tinted, and noneffervescent Txakoli is a totally unique product on the global market.

The origins of Astobiza, however, are in the heart of Alava. The Señorio de Astobiza farmhouse dates back to the end of the 18th century and today’s winery is surrounded by ten hectares of

private vineyards in Okondo, in the North of Alava, near Bilbao. The native Ondarrabi Zuri and Gros Manseng varieties of grape are grown exclusively over the entire

estate. Nowadays, the winery is run by Ane and Julen Abando, the third generation in the family business. Confident in the belief that the grapes are the secret to what makes their wines unique, they continue to grow the same varieties as their forbears. Although they still harvest the crop by hand, when it comes to making the wine, they use the very latest cutting-edge technology. Astobiza is the only winery to experiment with fermenting Txakoli in an egg-shaped concrete vat. The temperature in this kind of vat is very stable, allowing the wine to develop naturally without the need for artificial refrigeration. ©BTI

a sala Kubo-kutxa, se encuentra emplazada en el singular edificio Kursaal diseñado por el arquitecto Rafael Moneo y se ha convertido en una de las ofertas más importantes de la vida cultural de Donostia / San Sebastián. Inaugurada en el año 2000, la sala cuenta con aproximadamente 1.000 m2, un gran espacio que junto a su singular arquitectura permite albergar ­exposiciones de gran envergadura.

he Kubo-kutxa gallery is located in San Sebastian’s Kursaal Congress and Auditorium Centre, a stunning complex designed by architect Rafael Moneo. Creador apasionado, impulsivo, lleno de energía, las obras de Rafael Ruiz Balerdi, llenas de color, nos permiten imagi-

El ritmo que se aprecia en sus composiciones es reflejo de su interés por la música.

La extraordinaria pintura de Balerdi, que influyó en muchos de sus contemporáneos, estuvo basada en su capacidad de creación de imágenes, en su mirada arriesgada y profunda y en su diversidad, que supo ayudarse de una capacidad de ejecución y un sentido del color asombrosos, cualquiera que fuese la técnica empleada.

Aitzol Atutxa, campeón de corte de troncos con hacha

“Nuestro deporte sorprende a los turistas” troncos de haya y junto a la caja en la que transporta sus hachas, Aitzol Atutxa asegura que no conoce a nadie que haya empezado a tratar con el hacha “de pequeño que haya sufrido un accidente.

A todos los que les pasa han empezado de adultos”. Atutxa mide cerca de 1,85 metros y supera los noventa kilos, sus manos encallecidas parecen dos libros abiertos. “La gente cree que este es un deporte en el que lo principal es la fuerza.

Es completamente falso. Lo principal es la técnica, la fortaleza mental, la inteligencia, la capacidad de analizar a la madera, a tus rivales, establecer una táctica. Y la resistencia”, explica el campeón, que gestiona el restaurante familiar en Dima (Axpe Goikoa) y su propia bodega de txakoli (Gerena).

‘Aizkolari’ es la denominación en euskera para los deportistas que cortan con hachas de acero troncos depositados en horizontal sobre los que se ponen en pie. Este deporte tiene su origen en los trabajos forestales.

En un campeonato, los aizkolaris cortan con sus hachas cuatro troncos de 54 pulgadas de perímetro, cuatro de 60 pulgadas y cuatro de 72 pulgadas. “Hay que dosificarse. Y tener muy presente que, igual que no hay dos personas iguales, no existen dos maderas idénticas aunque sean de la misma especie”.

Donde mejor se expresa es en pie sobre el cilíndrico tronco de un haya, hacha en mano. Saltan enormes cuñas de madera cortada entre sus zapatillas. El hacha, con una cabeza que pesa más de dos kilos y medio y afilada hasta el límite de poder segar literalmente un pelo, devora la madera de un tocón de 60 pulgadas de perímetro. “Los turistas nos suelen preguntar si conservamos todos los dedos en los pies”, dice con una sonrisa el aizkolari Aitzol Atutxa.

s el campeón moderno de un deporte secular. Lleva una década imponiéndose en los torneos territoriales y regionales, ya sea en la modalidad individual o por parejas.

Vinculado a la esencia rural, pero asentado en el siglo XXI, Aitzol Atutxa nació en la ciudad, Bilbao, en 1988. Estudió en la

ciudad y se graduó en marketing. Pero su padre era aizkolari. Y a los seis años, el pequeño Aitzol ya jugaba con un hacha.

Ahora, su hijo de tres años posee el mismo juguete.

En un cobertizo en el que entrena en las laderas del valle de Arratia, entre

“En los años 50 y 60 del siglo pasado en alguna ocasión fueron 20.000 aficionados a la Plaza de Toros de San Sebastián a ver este deporte. Hoy estamos lejos. Pero creo que estamos viviendo un momento de inflexión: hemos llegado un buen grupo de aizkolaris jóvenes y empieza a recuperarse la pasión por el hacha”, describe Aitzol.

Hoy en día cada vez resultan más frecuentes las exhibiciones en eventos o para grupos de turistas. El silbido del hacha en el aire, el chasquido de las astillas al saltar y la respiración de los aizkolaris en pleno esfuerzo suponen todo un espectáculo.

Aitzol Atutxa entrena ya para su próximo reto. Alterna el hacha con el gimnasio, bicicleta estática y ergómetro. Es el hombre capaz de descifrar la personalidad de la madera usando el acero templado y siguiendo la tradición de un viejo deporte autóctono que empieza a fascinar a los viajeros que lo desconocen.

Aitzol Atutxa, Champion woodcutter

“Tourists find the sport fascinating” In the shed where he trains, on the slopes of the Arratia valley, surrounded by tree trunks and his collection of axes, Aitzol Atutxa says he does not know anyone “who started young who has suffered an injury. The only ones who get hurt are the ones who take it up as adults”. With calloused hands that could tell a story or two, Atutxa is about 1.85m tall and weighs over ninety kilos. “People think that competitive wood-cutting is all about strength, but they’re wrong. The most important things are technique, mental strength, intelligence, the ability to read the wood and the competition, and work out a strategy.

And endurance is important too”, explains the champion, who also runs a family restaurant (Axpe Goikoa) in Dima as well as his own Txakoli winery (Gerena).

Atutxa is a sight to behold as he stands on an enormous beech trunk, swinging his axe and chopping away, timber chips piled high between his feet. With a razor sharp steel axe head weighing over two and a half kilos, Atutxa makes light work of a trunk with a 60-inch circumference.

“Tourists are always asking if we still have all our toes”, says Basque aizkolari Aitzol Atutxa, with a smile.

A

modern-day champion of a traditional sport, Aitzol Atutxa has dominated both the individual and duo categories in local and regional competitions for the last ten years. Although he has developed a close bond with the rural environment, he was born in the city, (Bilbao, 1988) and is very much a product of the 21st century. He studied in the city and graduated with a degree in marketing. But as his father was a woodcutter, Aitzol started playing with an axe at the age of six. Nowadays, his three-year-old son already has one too.

When competing in a championship, the woodcutters have to cut through four trunks with a 54-inch circumference, four with a 60-inch circumference, and four with a 72-inch circumference. “You have to pace yourself. And remember that no two tree trunks are alike, even if they are the same kind of wood, just like no two people are exactly alike either”.

The competitions and tournaments attract a large number of participants and thousands of spectators. “In the 1950s and 60s, crowds as big as 20,000 gathered in the San Sebastian bullring to watch the sport. It’s not nearly as popular

these days. But I think things are changing for the better. There are quite a few young aizkolaris out there these days with a passion for the axe”, says Aitzol.

Today, more and more wood-cutting exhibitions are held for special events or groups of tourists. The whoosh of the axe slicing through the air, the splintering of wood and the strenuous effort of the aizkolaris are quite spectacular to watch.

‘Aizkolari’ is the Basque word for a competitive woodcutter who cuts through horizontal tree trunks by standing on top of them using a steel axe. Today’s sport has its roots in forestry logging.

Aitzol Atutxa is already training for his next challenge. His regime involves alternating axe practice with the gym and exercise bike, using an ergometer. Thanks to his skilful use of tempered steel and special understanding of wood, Atutxa has become a master of this ancient Basque sport, a sport that never fails to fascinate, and is slowly becoming popular with visitors to the Basque Country.
