Backstage at a fashion show last September in New York, there was one model we—me, Lauren (our video producer) and all the makeup artists and hair stylists—could not stop fawning over. Generally speaking, any model who’s cast to walk in a major show is striking, but every now and again, we’re in the presence of one whose look is something beyond that—something not easily put into words. In this case, that something wasn’t easily shown, either. We each snapped photo after photo of her, and while they looked lovely, they paled in comparison to her in-person visage. Raw and unretouched they did, anyway. I bring this up because, unless you work in the media, you might find yourself wondering why magazines feel compelled to airbrush women who look good for a living. As someone on the inside, so to speak, I can assure you that perpetuating an unrealistic standard for beauty is not the reason. Retouching is more about art than it is smoothing out wrinkles, making a face more symmetrical, or carving out a slim waistline. And guess what? All of us are far more accustomed than we realize to a certain standard with regard to the artistic quality of the images we see in magazines, on billboards, and the like. Whether that’s right or wrong is another conversation entirely—and a long, complicated one at that. It’s just the way things are. To further put things in perspective, even professional photos of babies—you know, for announcements, holiday cards and such— undergo a fair amount of retouching more often than not. So do photos of inanimate objects, like beauty products and just about anything you can buy online or in a catalogue. I certainly agree that acts like airbrushing a gorgeous actress to the point of unrecognizability—or manipulating a supermodel’s body with such zeal that she loses a limb in the process— are both unnecesssary and slightly offensive. But I’ll gladly argue the merits of acts like taming a flyaway hair or erasing a blemish. (They happen to models too— sometimes, on shoot days.) This is standard-issue quality control. It’s not inherently evil. As you may have guessed by now, here at DermStore, we do typically retouch our model photography. But for this issue of The Magazine— in light of the many recent scandals surrounding the subject of heavyhanded post-production—we decided to forgo it entirely.

Not one of the models you see within these pages has been retouched in any way, and I think you’ll agree: they still look fairly amazing. I admit that despite the circumstances—gorgeous models, talented hair and makeup pros, the vision of a skilled photography team, and access to all the beauty products anyone could ever dream of—we didn’t know exactly how this experiment would turn out. But we couldn’t be much happier with how it did. As for those circumstances, I get that most of us don’t have these sorts of luxuries at hand on a day-to-day basis. So I made it my goal to pack this issue not only with products that can help us achieve the best versions of ourselves, but with real-life tips for managing the issues that they—and also, our photo-retouchers, who got a nice little break for a minute—strive to correct. After all, this is the digital age we live in. And if you’d love to look as though you’ve been professionally styled, made up and retouched in your personal photographs—which, no doubt are seen by more people today than ever before thanks to social media— well, I’d be the last person in the world to call you vain.

You’re over your acne issues (for the most part) and have not yet begun to see much in the way of aging. Lucky you!
You see some signs of aging—fine lines and wrinkles, anyone?—and might notice some dullness. That’s because your cells are turning over at a much slower rate.
Sun damage—in the form of spots, ruddiness and rough texture—is rearing its ugly head. As such, your complexion no longer reflects light evenly as it once did. Your skin could use some help retaining moisture.
Your skin feels much drier than it once did, and the signs of aging—expression lines, pigmentation, sagginess—are becoming more pronounced.
You might think your bad habits (sleeping with makeup on, skipping daily SPF) bear no consequence, but just because you can’t see the damage doesn’t mean it isn’t lurking under the surface. (Trust.)
Your skin needs some help in the way of exfoliation. Wanna get specific? You shed dead skin cells only once a month or so now, as opposed to every 2 weeks, like you did in your 20s.

Professional microdermabrasion treatments—combined with IPL (intense pulsed light) facials, if you’re a candidate—will go a long way if you have the means to indulge. These and other in-office procedures (like peels) will aggressively address your biggest skin issues.

Word on the street is that lipstick is the new nail polish. he first non-prescription high-dose vitamin A derivative that can be used safely in the daytime? These are Verso’s words, not mine—but given that I know and love vitamin A derivatives as the single most effective way to turn back the clock on an aging face, they had me at that. (I admit, the ultra-chic packaging caught my eye, too.) But let’s not simply judge a book by its cover. Let’s talk about how well this stuff works! Verso—which, by the way, means “reverse” in Latin—depends on a brand-new complex called Retinol 8. What does that mean? Well, it’s said to be up to 8 times more potent than other non-prescription retinoids—but it doesn’t cause irritation, and it’s fine for use during the day. (Even has a product specifically formulated for daytime use: its aptly named Day Cream.)
