The Case IH Autonomous tractor was launched at Farm Progress show in the USA and is attracting a lot of talk and interest. Obviously, telematics and GPS are part of the journey towards this new and exciting technology. One thing is for sure: this will be here sooner than we all expect.

Our new Puma Tier 4b and Optum tractors have been a great success, with increased numbers prowling around the region for the new harvest season.

The Contractors Choice Modern tractors need to offer high power to weight ratios which allows them to show versatility by carrying out PTO operations such as rotary hoeing or powering triple mowers, transport duties as required but they also add weight when required for all- important draft work.

Case IH sits in an enviable position of having two great tractors that fall into this sector, with the well -known Puma, and the new kid on the block, the Case Optum.

The Optum is the brawn of the brace and is said to offer the power of the mighty Magnum, with the manoeuvrability of the Puma, with a choice of 270 or 310hp from a 6.7 litre FPT engine, which interestingly differs from the pack by offering rated horsepower at all times and doesn’t rely on power boost. Tier 4 emissions standards are met with the HI-eSCR system which does away with heat inducing Exhaust Gas Recirculation, or Diesel Particulate Filters. Featuring a load bearing sump which does away with chassis rails, turning tightly on the headland belies the tractor’s size making it suitable for the high demand PTO user, whilst its ability to be fully weighted to 16 tonnes opens the door to cultivation work. Coupled to the legendary Case IH CVT transmission, and the integral APM, fuel savings of up to 25% can be achieved by running at the least possible engine revs whilst maintaining speed, while on the flipside a new exhaust brake system lends itself to haulage work, and improves braking efficiency by up to 40%.

The SurroundVision cab offers 360 degree vision which is improved by the one-piece windscreen, and driver comfort is right up there with the Grammer Evolution seat which senses movements up to 500 times per second and moves in both vertical and lateral directions. Operator friendly controls sees an easy to use headland management system, a large screen which supports ISOBUS implements, and a must with a big tractor, electrically adjusted rear view mirrors.

A choice of trim levels sees Classic or Ultimate specification, with the latter offering front linkage/PTO as part of the standard build and a luxurious leather appointed seat.

The Puma series takes the form of two layouts the Short Wheelbase with 140 to 160hp, and the Long Wheelbase

version pushing out 165 to 240hp. Using the same 6.7 litre FPT engine as its bigger sibling, the electronic common rail engine offers up to 35hp “power boost” in high speed work, PTO use, or when there is demand from the hydraulic system. A choice of transmission offers a full powershift with 19F/6R speeds or the renowned CVT option offering step-less speed control from 0 to 50kph, and suited to tasks such as harvesting where precise adjustments are required.

For the 2017 season product improvements take the form of evolution rather than revolution with subtle upgrades that enhance the overall package. Take a look at the new cab roof which incorporates 360 degree LED lighting for long working days, and combines with the one piece front screen for excellent visibility. The Grammer Evolution seat is carried over from the larger Optum, and headland management takes a leap forward with HMC 2, for easy set-up, recording and editing of sequences, which are displayed on the plus sized PRO 700 touch screen monitor. Of course the final choice is yours, keep it subtle with Classic specification, or take Ultimate to make sure all bases are covered.

With ever tightening regulations around effluent, cost-savvy farmers are realising the value of manure, both from a nutrient level, and the ability to increase organic matter.

As a contractor the challenge is to pick a machine that can deal with different materials and different consistencies.

The Hi-Spec Xcel 1250 takes a conventional style body with a moving floor and combines it with a transversely mounted horizontal shredding rotor, and twin, high capacity spreading discs.

For a long working life the main

components are shot-blasted and painted with a two-pack system, while chassis and other key areas are protected with a heavy-duty galvanised coating.

The moving floor which transports the load to the shredding rotor uses four, 25 tonne breaking strain chains, with bolted up slats, and features a hydraulic drive system for variable speed control, and ultimate overload protection.

The shredder rotor makes extensive use of Hardox steel and carries 22 grade 10 chains fitted with 12mm Hardox flails to shred material to an even consistency, while dealing with stones, rocks or any other “items� found on a contractors round. Once shredded, the material falls onto a 2.0 metre wide, shear-bolt protected twin disc spreader system, with interchangeable vanes for differing density materials. The shredder/ spreader layout allows operators to deal with farm yard manure, chicken waste, sewage sludge, and hard to

spread products like burnt lime, while a slurry door with rubber seals takes care of the runny stuff. High output typically sees 12 tonne loads discharged in 3 minutes, and up to 24 metres spreading width.

With an un-laden weight of 7 tonnes, and a 12 tonne capacity, running gear is a 10 stud commercial axle, equipped with brakes, and 580-70 R38 tractor tyres, while drivelines use heavy duty Comer gearboxes rated to 200hp.

Standard fitments are extensive with wide angle PTO, access ladder, hydraulic slurry door, and auto chain oiling. Options include a DigiStar weigh system than works with 4 load cells which can be linked to GPS for proof of placement.

french grunt It’s often said that once you have a telehandler you wonder how you managed without it, as the capacity, manoeuvrability and safety surpass that of a traditional tractor/loader by a country mile.

With over 35 years’ experience in telehandlers and a range to suit all operations, it’s no surprise to learn that one in three telehandlers around the World carry the name Manitou. The MLT-X range from the French specialists offer a world of opportunities with capacities from 2.5 to 6 tonnes, lift heights from 6 to 10 metres and forward reach of up to 6.5 metres, meaning loads can be placed just where you want them-with ease.

A low profile boom with low slung engine combines with an ergonomically perfect cabin for 360 degree visibility, with the driver taken care of, and up for long days, by the air suspension seat, air conditioning, and the unique JSM joystick which ensures safe, controlled placement in the toughest conditions and fingertip control of the 4 stage manual/6 stage power-shift torque converter based transmissions.

For NZ the focus centres around four models, which cover the majority of requirements, starting with the entry level MLT X 732 (3.2 tonnes / 7 metres) and costing around the same as a 100hp tractor loader/combo, and moving up to the MLT X 735-120LSU PS (3.5 tonnes / 7 metres) for those looking for a little more capacity and improved cycle times via the hi-flow pump. For larger operations the MLT X 741-120LSU (4.1 tonnes/7 metres) ups the ante even further, and high end farmers or contractors will want to look at the MLT X 840-137PS (4 tonnes/8 metres) when there’s silage to be pushed up or bulkers needing filling.
