DISCOVER SUMMER FUN AT CAMP GILMOUR

General Information

Camp Gilmour Senior Counselors and Instructors consist of GA faculty and staff as well as qualified, certifed and experienced instructors and teachers from outside sources. Junior counselors are Gilmour students who have been trained to assist the senior counselors and instructors in providing the best possible Gilmour experience for our campers.

Communication

Registration is through UltraCamp (www.ultracamp.com) where families can set up an online account to register and pay for camps. Full payment is required at registration. Registrations can be amended until June 1, 2017. You will receive a confirmation email after successfully registering.

Senior Counselor/Instructor Communication

Senior Counselor/Instructors will communicate any additional information regarding camps via the email provided at registration on the Thursday prior to your camp start date. If your registration is received late, there may be a delay in this communication.

Field Trip and Off-Site Transportation Gilmour Academy uses our own buses and vans as transportation for our field trips and off-site programs. All drivers have proper credentials and background checks.

Facilities

Gilmour Academy is located in Gates Mills Ohio on a 144-acre campus. Our state of the art campus and facilities include an 8-lane pool and smaller pool area for our younger swimmers, two ice rinks, four basketball courts, three soccer fields, one turf athletic field and all-weather track, three baseball fields, six tennis courts, a wellness room that includes cardio and weight equipment, and a full weight room. Gilmour is a bring-your-own-device (BYOD) campus, so students and campus visitors have ample Wi-Fi access. Music and art, labs and practice facilities are housed in the Kelley Middle School building.

Extended Care Program

Before Care is held from 7:15 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. at the Lower School. This program provides a variety of activities for your child as he or she prepares for the day. Day campers will be bussed to the Upper School Campus at 8:30 a.m. to begin their camp day.

After Care is also held at the Lower School from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Campers from the Day Camp are bussed to the Lower School at 4:15 p.m. After Care is another opportunity for our campers to enjoy activities, play on the playground and unwind. A snack is provided for After Care campers.

Parents may not drop off their children at the Upper School or Lower School until 8:30 a.m. if they are not enrolled in Before Care.

Parents must pick up their children from camp no later than 4:15 p.m. Anyone who remains after 4:15 p.m. will be bussed to the Lower School for the After Care program and families will be charged. Parents must pick up their children from After Care by 6 p.m. A $1 per minute late charge will be assessed beyond 6 p.m.

Late Drop-off or Early Pick-up. If it is necessary to drop off your camper later than 7 a.m. or pick up before 4 p.m. the administrative assistant is available to help with these requests.

Lunch

Register early. Register online before February 28, 2017 and receive a 10% discount.

There is no discount on overnight accommodations.

Sibling discount. $50 off second through fourth child.

Only one discount may be used per camp.

Camp Gilmour provides lunch for most of our programs. The cost is included in your camp registration. AVI offers a hot main dish, including vegetarian and sandwich options.

The menu will be provided in your Thursday email prior to your camp week. Students are welcome to pack lunches, but are reminded not to bring items containing nuts.

Half-day only programs, (preschool and day camp) do not include lunch. Campers who register for two half-day programs will be provided lunch and an activity between their two sessions (12 -1 p.m.)

Drop-off and Pick-up

Drop-off for Before Care and Preschool Camp is at the Lower School. Please follow signage for parking and drop-off areas. Parents are asked to enter the building to drop off these campers.

Drop-off for Day and Specialty Camps is at the circle outside the Athletic Center.

Counselors will be there at 8:30 a.m. to greet your camper and take him/her into the Athletic Center.

Drop-off and Pick-up for Hockey Camps is at the Ice Arena. Parents are asked to check your hockey player in and out. Someone will be at the desk inside the door to assist.

Pick-up for Day Camp is in the circle of the Athletic Center. On Monday, you will receive a tag to put in your car. When you drive up, a counselor will go to get your camper in the Athletic Center, bring him/her to your car and their senior counselor will have you sign them out. You do not need to leave your car.

Pick-up for Preschool Camp is at the Lower School. Parents are asked to park in the parking lot and enter the building to sign out their camper.

Savings

Refund Policy

Registration fees, paid online for Gilmour’s Summer Camp programs are refundable if canceled by June 1, 2017. After June 1, you will be charged a $100 cancellation fee. If you wish to swap your registration for another Gilmour camp, you must contact the camp director at (440) 684-4580. Any request for cancellation due to illness or injury must be accompanied by a doctor’s note.

Preschool Camp at Gilmour Academy is a journey of discovery. Campers enjoy themed weeks filled with learning, crafts and fun, including swimming lessons given by licensed instructors in our state-of-the-art pool.

Camp With Us Pitch a tent at Camp Gilmour for a fun camping adventure!

We will learn about hiking and nature, have fun fishing for prizes, and tell stories by the campfire. No campout would be complete without s’mores!

Combine Camp With Us and TetraBrazil Soccer Camp Attend full- or half-day camp and enjoy the soccer camp as part of the morning activities. See information in Partial Day Specialty Camps.

Where is the Cat in the Hat? Find your inner creativity as we climb into the colorful worlds of Dr. Seuss! From Cat in the Hat to Horton Hears a Who, we will all be running around like Thing 1 and Thing 2. So be ready to count your fish and defend the trees as we wear our red and white striped hats.

Combine Where is Cat in the Hat? with Gates Mills Village Safety Town. Attend camp in the morning, have lunch and then be bussed to Safety Town in the Ice Arena at 12:30. Parents pick up campers at 2:30 p.m. at the Ice Arena. Sign-up begins March 1, 2017.

June 19-23

Campers to the Rescue This week will focus on safety and helping others. Camp will conclude with a superhero theme and dress-up Friday. Other activities might include a field trip to the Fire House and visits from the Police Department and demonstrations from the lifeguards.

Beautiful Noise Join in as the beat goes on. Campers will enjoy music and movement, laughter and singing. March in our band and explore music with instruments as campers will make their own “music.”

July 3-7 (no camp July 4)

Party in the USA!

We will make our own fireworks as we learn about the 4th of July and celebrate our country! Join us for a red, white and blue extravaganza of a picnic, parade, patriotic crafts, activities, songs and flag-waving.

How Things Work This week is sure to bring out the scientist in all of us! This hands-on theme allows campers to learn about how things work, watch fun scientific reactions, and maybe even build their own erupting volcano!

What better way to get the summer off on the right foot, then to get cracking on the skills and activities that we’ve waited for all spring?

Camp with us is an opportunity for campers to immerse themselves in the world of summertime outdoor activities, including hiking,campfires and camping skills. Get ready for Camp Gilmour’s first week of fun activities that will ignite the fire for a safe and fulfilling summer.

Who do you like most? Gumball? SpongeBob? Nemo? Dory? Campers will explore the world that is cartoon land. What can we imagine?

During the 1-hour per day camp, the British Soccer Academy will introduce your camper to basic elements of the game. Fully trained and qualified British and Brazilian coaches will introduce social, physical and emotional skills through soccer. The 8:1 player to coach ratio, offers a high-energy program for children.

Gilmour Academy is offering Red Cross Learn-to-Swim classes featuring six levels of Learn-to-Swim instruction to help swimmers of all ages and abilities develop their swimming and water safety skills. The Red Cross Learn-to-Swim program teaches aquatic and safety skills in a logical progression. The objective is to instruct individuals to swim and to be safe in, on and around the water.

The 30-minute classes are held on Saturdays for six weeks.

Command and Conquer!

Your child will have so much fun playing our collection of real-time strategy games they won’t know they’re learning teamwork, online communication, PC maintenance, and a host of skills needed by all 21st century students. Led by Gilmour Academy’s Instructor of Computer Science Dan Adiletta, students will use the Upper School’s new computer lab during a deceptively rigorous but thoroughly enjoyable week. Students will acquire agile development “best practices” as they log their progress, discuss the collaborative decision making in previous games, and report a quantitative analysis of the gameplay to the group. Games will include Starcraft, Rise of Nations and Red Alert.

Chess camp has a fun and friendly spirit and is a great way to keep the brain sharp during the summer while having a real blast! Chess Camp is a super-fun, high-energy chess experience in which kids ages 5-12 celebrate a new chess tactic each day with silly videos, music-driven puzzlers for prizes, colorful silicone Tactixbands, funny movies and chess clock tourneys in which the winner gets the loser’s Mardi-Gras beads! Laughter, fast-clocks and compelling teaching approaches make this camp the summer’s highlight for the hundreds of kids who make up the awesome network of The Knight School’s chess teams.

White Light, Galaxies and Then Some

Children explore science as a fun and exciting process of investigation.

Each day we conduct experiments, discover the amazing, and test our own ideas. You will learn about LASERS. Dancing, swirling, pulsating laser light will be part of our Laser Light Show. Work with our light blitzar as a laser light flashes to music. We will conduct experiments with our LASER POINTER plus lenses and mirrors as we have fun and learn. Build and take home your own kaleidoscope, spectroscope, periscope and constellation watcher. Watch the constellations in our room and learn about all the planets as you take our 3-D Adventure into outer space! This workshop will be a De-Light-ful hands-on experience.

How would you like to build a robot that has four built-in microphones?

It will detect the sound source and in turn it will move and turn accordingly. It is your own robot to build and take home. Wow! It starts flashing and plays Do-Re-Me. Make it move the way you want it to move.

It is so smart. It will move in its own routine if it does not get a signal in one minute. It will go to sleep if you do not issue any commands in 90 seconds. However, you can wake it up. Learn about the different gears and sensors as you build it. Get to build other robots working in groups. Join in our Sumo wrestling and obstacle course events with what you have built. See everything happening as you build.

Arcade Electronics Galore

Get ready to build and play your own arcade games. Your camper will have at his/her disposal resistors, switches, wires, LED diodes, transistors and more. Do not get overwhelmed. Building with electronics is fun. They will program the spinning light fan to display different sayings. Build and play a Home Run Derby game. See who gets the most home runs before getting 10 outs. A winning song will cheer. Build circuits to test your memory. Build an electronic circuit that plays the card game 21. They can learn to program the circuit board to emit different funky sounds. Play with the disco ball, sirens, or a light show. Learn the effects of the different electronic components. Learn what amps, volts, resistance and power are. Yes, in Sciensational Workshops, we learn by doing!

Can You Dig It? Fossil Hunt Do You Dig Dinosaurs?

Archaeology and Paleontology seem like big words to kids. Now Sciensational Workshops for Kids makes them come alive. Each child will partake in a simulated fossil excavation, uncovering the different bones of a dinosaur. Each child will then assemble the bones to form a completed 3-dimensional dinosaur to be taken home. We will bring the excavation tools, labels and specimen bags. We will use our geological time and fossil charts. You’ll identify 20-million-year-old shark’s teeth and see other fossil replicas such as, a cave bear tooth, an ammonite, a Tyrannosaurus rex tooth or a dinosaur egg etc. See and work with our rock and mineral collection. With your Robotic Arm you can command your gripper to open and close, move your robotic wrist, elbow, base and command vertical and horizontal reaching moves. Egyptian Dig - Buried Treasures

Children discover the amazing science of archaeology as they uncover ancient artifacts. In doing this, we will learn about Egyptian life.

We will excavate with tools that real archaeologists use. As we excavate a scarab, we will find artifacts such as a hieroglyphic tablet, ankh symbol and a jackal. The artifacts are yours to keep. We will wet the sand that we dig into and create sand sculptures for display.

You can make a pyramid as well as a sphinx. Let’s go back in time with a hands-on archaeological experience.

Prospectors Mystery Rock Workshop

You are going to be a prospector (you know, those people who were always looking for gold). In this workshop you will get to dig for valuable gems, fascinating rocks and some ancient fossils. All are yours to keep. What hidden wonders will you find? The identities of the 10 specimens found in your Mystery Rock have been kept a secret. You will experience the thrill of discovery, much as prospectors did. You will be able to identify each one. Your specimens will be in a hard clay material just like the prospectors found. You will have to get the gems out without breaking or scratching them. That’s not easy. You will get an excavation tool, specimen brush, log book, sorting trays and labels.

As a Prospector, you’ll record the color, both wet and dry texture, and its ability to float for each of the 10 specimens you dig out. Make an educated guess with our help as to whether each one is a rock, gem or fossil. See how good you are. You will learn from us the exact name and classification. We give you hands-on science...

Director of the Boys Hockey Program at the Nichols School in Buffalo, N.Y.; and Head Coach of the Nichols School Boys’ Prep Division II Hockey team. Chiellino has also coached the Buffalo Saints 16-U AAA and Team Western NY, (2012 Empire State Games in Lake Placid, New York); was the Assist. Director and Coach at Complete Hockey NY; was a USA Hockey Coaching Education Program (presenter); and Team Leader at the USA Hockey National Player Development Camps. Mike Chiellino is the Head Instructor for all of the hockey camps.

Compete and Battle Weekend Camp

High Intensity Team Camp - “H.I.T”

The “Compete and Battle” Weekend Camp is a three-day camp of strictly on-ice instruction which will include checking, body positioning, angling, proper body contact/engagement, and small area “compete and battle” drills to allow players to learn how to play in tight spaces.

The skill to make plays/decisions with limited time and space on the ice is crucial for a hockey player to elevate their game to the next level!

The High Intensity Team camp is Gilmour’s signature hockey camp.

It is one of the best camps in North America when ice time, instruction and cost are compared. Players skate close to FIVE hours a day. The instructional staff demands hard work physically and mentally. This is an inquiry-only camp in the sense that players must be approved by the camp director before officially enrolling.

The “H.I.T.” Camp is for players who have developed a solid base of fundamentals and are playing at an upper level of competition in their age group. Camp format will consist of two separate teams that will compete against one another during the weeklong camp.

Power Skating Camp Power skating is the most overlooked skill in hockey. Our staff will teach the techniques necessary to improve stride, agility, speed, quickness and power. The focus will be on proper use of edges to maximize speed and body control. This camp offers approximately four hours of on-ice instruction per day. Additional off-ice instruction will focus on leg strength and balance.

Light the Lamp Shooting Camp The number one focus of this camp is to score goals! Scoring strategies covered include wrist shots, snap shots, backhands, dekes, tips and rebounds. We will teach the basics of on-ice vision, awareness and reading the goaltender. This camp coincides with the “Brick Wall” Goaltending Camp for healthy competition.

Boys’ Overnight Hockey Camp The Boys’ Overnight Ice Hockey Camp is a week designed to help players develop fundamental skills. The emphasis is placed on individual skill development as well as team skills and concepts.

The camp features a small coach-to-player ratio. Our staff includes instructors who have played and coached at the college hockey level.

We provide the best possible learning environment in our facilities.

Check-in begins at 8 a.m. on Monday. Camp concludes Friday at 4:00 p.m. Full equipment is required.

The cost includes housing and meals for the week.

Brick Wall Goaltending Camp The most important position on the ice is the goaltender. This camp has developed an innovative program that fosters confidence while significantly increasing the goaltender’s ability to stop the puck. The Goaltending Camp will have current or former NCAA college hockey goaltenders as instructors to help the goaltenders need to find a style that fits their size, flexibility, quickness and creativity. This camp coincides with “Light the Lamp” Shooting Camp for healthy competition.

Combine Testing Camp This camp will focus on all testing areas surrounding the sport of ice hockey. The testing areas will include skating, stick handling, shooting accuracy, shot speed and various off-ice testing standards. Campers will receive a full printout of their testing results at the end of the week.

Under the direction of Dan Coughlin, the Gilmour Academy 2015 State Champion volleyball program will host two camps this summer.

Campers will receive advanced training, learn new techniques and fundamentals, make new friends, and have fun! Training and skills are taught by our knowledgeable coaching staff. Former Gilmour volleyball players will also help with instruction.

Gilmour’s Girls’ DIII State Champion head coach Joe Ciuni ‘03 works with boys and girls to learn the skills and team tactics to be successful in soccer. The camp will prepare players for the next level of their careers. Sportsmanship and respect for others are hallmarks of the experience. Drills and games will help boost player’s love of the game while developing them into well-rounded soccer players.

This clinic will review fast pitch offensive and defensive skills. Learn proper techniques for throwing, fielding, bunting, hitting, base running and more from the Gilmour coaching staff.

Coach Lindley was the 2016 New Herald Coach of the Year, and has led his teams to Top 10 state rankings 11 of the last 12 years. Boys Lacrosse Camp

Gilmour Academy is partnering with Force Sports and the Ohio Machine to offer a boys lacrosse camp. At the Ohio Machine Lacrosse Camp, young athletes will learn or continue to develop the fundamental skills of lacrosse in a safe, comfortable and fun environment. This camp is offered to boys ages 11 to 17 and will be divided into specific groups based on age and skill level. The coaches will focus on activities and games specifically designed for each level of player. For the younger (less experienced) players, the staff will focus on introducing and developing the technical fundamentals of lacrosse. The older (more experienced) players will be challenged at a higher level and taught to make game decisions while keeping possession of the ball. This camp will be a great way for players of all levels to improve their game and become more competitive players!

Learn to Row and Sail

The Learn to Row & Sail program is an excellent opportunity for young athletes to learn and improve their skills. No experience is necessary - the coaches will teach everything a new rower/sailor needs to know to start them on their water career. Campers will gain experience through sculling (two oars per person), land work on our ergometers (indoor rowing machines), indoor rowing tanks, on shore and on water general skills, including wind direction, rigging, rules of the road, and boat-handling. Parent orientation is held during the first hour of the first session of all Learn to Row & Sail programs. Campers will be prepared to participate in additional rowing and sailing opportunities with The Foundry depending upon age at the completion of this course. Campers will be bussed from Gilmour to and from The Foundry Rowing and Sailing Center located at 1381 Columbus Road, Cleveland Ohio 44113.

European Swordsmanship has been practiced for centuries. Fencing develops physical fitness, mental concentration, coordination, speed and agility.

Fencing is one of the few sports that exercises all of the body’s major muscle systems. On the psychological side, fencing makes you more alert. Fencing also develops mental focus.

Fencing can help you acquire the reflexes of a boxer, the legs of a high-jumper, and the concentration of a tournament chess player. But the best thing about fencing is - IT’S FUN! Cynthia Fidanza This is an introductory chemistry course that includes an examination of atomic and molecular structure, chemical reactions, periodicity, the behavior of gases, bonding, solution chemistry, equilibrium, thermo-chemistry, acids and bases, oxidation/reduction and electro chemistry. Laboratory work and related problem-solving exercises are integrated into the coursework. Students will be provided with an excellent foundation for understanding molecular aspects of biology. Gilmour students will earn one credit and fulfill Gilmour’s chemistry requirement for graduation. Karen Roxbury In this course, students will analyze characteristics and properties of two- and three-dimensional geometric shapes, develop mathematical arguments about a variety of geometric relationships, describe spatial relationships using coordinate geometry, apply transformations and use symmetry to analyze mathematical situations. Gilmour students will earn one credit which can be used to fulfill the state’s requirement for four mathematics credits.
