his summer, with the pandemic still raging, Gilmour Head of School Kathy Kenny had to act quickly and decisively in planning for a return to school. She turned to Bobby Skoda ’07.

Skoda owns Koacore, a distributor of PPE, COVID testing solutions, antibacterial soaps and disinfectant wipes based in Mayfield Village. The company also helps clients source products that they can’t locate themselves. At such times, Koacore staff sits down with clients and strategizes about which products they’ll need and how they can obtain them.

Over the summer, Skoda advised Kenny about cleaning and safety products Gilmour should buy in preparing for the school year, how many to stock up on, how best to protect students living in the dorms, and issues to consider for ensuring a safe return to the classroom.

Koacore distributes some products and procures others, including Clorox, Lysol and face masks. Among the company’s clients are hospitals, local and state governments, and school systems in Ohio and around the country. Most notably, they are proud to be the primary PPE provider for the Illinois State Board of Education.

Their frontline workers, hospitals and nursing homes take precedence over other types of businesses during the pandemic, Skoda says. And while the supply chain slowly is catching up, what happened back in March as cities began to shut down was unprecedented.

“For one of the first times ever, everybody needed the same products at the same time,” says Skoda, who majored in business administration at Fordham University.

“The usual partners we buy from no longer were able to find products to sell. The supply chain was so stressed, you didn’t know how to acquire the product or when it would be delivered to you.”

To help fill the gap, Skoda tapped heavily into his network of trusted contacts.

Kenny is grateful for the critical role Skoda played in ensuring that Gilmour could safely reopen this fall. “Bobby was a wealth of information and a trusted advisor for us. I am so appreciative of his willingness to give of his time and treasure on behalf of our faculty, staff and current students.”

D

ave Lucas, Ph.D., taught English at Gilmour from 2005 to 2008, returning briefly in the spring of 2012 to teach another class. Though his days at Gilmour were brief, they were impactful. A graduate of John Carroll University, Lucas came to Gilmour after earning his MFA from the University of Virginia. In 2014, he received his doctorate from the University of Michigan, and in 2018 he was appointed the second Poet Laureate of the State of Ohio.

You were young when you taught at Gilmour.

I was 24. It was my first full-time job after earning my MFA. Gilmour is where I learned how to teach. It was challenging and eye-opening to be 24 and trying to teach people just slightly younger than I was. I was never particularly good at being an authority figure.

Where are you working now?

I’m in my seventh year of teaching at Case Western Reserve University. I teach first-year students a writing-based course called “What is College for?” I also teach a poetry workshop.

With the pandemic, it’s the strangest year of teaching I’ve ever had.

What stands out about your Gilmour years?

The thing that stuck with me most is not only how many friends I made among the faculty, but also how many of those who started off as my students have become my friends. That’s one of the real blessings of teaching.

What should students take away from your lessons?

I want them to understand that poetry is everywhere.

When they come into class they may not think they like poetry. Then I start asking them about the slang they use with their friends and all of a sudden they’re speaking in a kind of poetry. I want them to realize the ways they are participating in poetry every day.

CATCHING UP

You were Poet Laureate from 2018 through 2019.

How did you come to it, and what was it like?

I was encouraged to apply for it by Amit Majmudar, Ohio’s first Poet Laureate, who’s from Cleveland. As Poet Laureate, I drove about 15,000 miles through the state and participated in events. I gave readings, visited high schools and led workshops. It was like being an ambassador for poetry.

One of the projects I owned as Poet Laureate was a newspaper column called “Poetry for People Who Hate Poetry.” I was supposed to come up with a cultural project to promote poetry, and that’s what I came up with. It ran in about 20 newspapers throughout the state. It actually started from a couple essays I wrote while at Gilmour. They ran in the student newspaper, The Bagman’s Gambit.

What makes for a talented poet?

A talented poet is someone who finds the English language endlessly delightful and inventive and surprising. That is the most important criterion.

Do you prefer writing poetry or prose?

Poetry is what I love. It feels like a special occasion meal.

Prose is a good meatloaf sandwich that’ll get you through.

You are a co-founder of Brews + Prose at Market Garden Brewery. Tell us about that.

Four of us founded Brews + Prose in July 2012. In the eight years between then and the arrival of COVID-19, we hosted readings every month, with Pulitzer Prize winners, poets laureate, MacArthur “Genius” Fellows, as well as emerging writers with all those honors in their future. We’ve tried to remind our audiences that literature is supposed to be fun.

W

ith the March 5 dedication of The Lorraine and Bill Dodero Center for Performing Arts, Lorraine Dodero’s longtime dream is a reality, not only for Gilmour students, but for the wider Northeast Ohio community.

The Lorraine and Bill Dodero Center for Performing Arts launches a new chapter in Gilmour history, one that opens a new world for students eyeing a future (or even just a present) in the performing arts. Whether they feel called to theater, dance, music, or speech and debate, students now have a state-of-the-art space in which to build their talents and foster their dreams.

‘A Total Education’ for Gilmour Students

Lorraine Dodero herself was an art major, but the inspiration behind the gift wasn’t tied to her personal experience. “My thought was just to leave something that would be there for generations to come, whether my husband and I are here or not,” she says.

“We wanted to embrace the aspect of Gilmour students getting a full education, and that includes the arts.” And while Lorraine admits that she appreciates theater and ballet as much as anyone, the gift was deeply rooted in the need she and her husband saw on campus Head of School Kathy Kenny spoke to the void the performing arts center now fills for Gilmour’s student body. “At Gilmour, we have always strived to meet our students where they are, based on their unique talents,” Kenny says. “The Center for Performing

A First-Class Theater Brings Expanded Programming and Greater Opportunity The main Dodero Theater seats 305 and boasts a large stage, fly equipment, and costume and scene shops. The space allows drama students to hone their skills in every aspect of theater, from acting to technical theater to musical accompaniment.

“It expands the performing arts program in a way we’ve never had the capability to before,” says Lucas Clark, Gilmour’s fine and performing arts program coordinator, who oversees programming at the center.

“With the new center, Gilmour can produce shows that we didn’t have the luxury of considering before because we didn’t have the infrastructure in place to produce them. Now we do.”

With all of that, Gilmour students can receive a total education “that unifies the whole picture,” Dodero told us back in 2014, when the project lived only in her imagination.

At 19,000 square feet, the center enables Gilmour to expand its creative offerings for all students, from preschool through high school.

When the Doderos made the initial $5 million gift that served as the foundation for the Center for Performing Arts fundraising campaign, they dreamed of a venue that would support a well-rounded Gilmour student — a place that could provide an artistic outlet for them just as it bolsters them academically.

Arts gives us a solid foundation to really make good on that promise. What's more, it allows us to do so in ways that tap into our students' passions. For those who thrive in playwriting, dance, theater and debate, the Center for Performing Arts is a state- ofthe-art home where the imagination unfolds, skills are developed and dreams are made.”

While some institutions have eliminated arts programming in an attempt to cut costs, Gilmour is demonstrating that the passions and artistic development of its students are still top priorities. The Center for Performing Arts is home to a main stage theater, a black box theater for small, student-led productions, speech and debate practice rooms, costume and scene shops, a dance studio and space for special events.

Now that the project is completed, the Doderos are excited to see the building come to life as a transformational space for students and the wider Gilmour community. “The building will help ensure that Gilmour offers best-in-class

A Cultural Centerpiece for the School — and the Community Most notably, the Center for Performing Arts allows students to connect in ways beyond athletics, Clark says. “That’s empowering for them as individuals, and it’s equally as empowering for Gilmour, which has become an East Side hub for the performing arts thanks to this incredible gift.”

Already, Gilmour is fielding inquiries from local music and dance ensembles about renting the space. Community partners such as Fairmount Center for the Arts and Piano Cleveland now lead after-school programs at Gilmour, while Encore Chamber Music, an international chamber music festival, transforms campus every summer (except this past summer due to the pandemic) as renowned musicians from around the globe take up residence in the dorm as they practice and perform together throughout the summer.

In every way, The Lorraine and Bill Dodero Center for Performing Arts puts Gilmour on the arts map in Cleveland. “It’s awesome,” Clark says. “The more we can bring in different community organizations to build partnerships for the future, the better it shows students that it’s possible to make a living doing what they love.

When they see successful artists coming in and using the space, they see a future for themselves in it.”

‘Steinway School’ Designation Rounds Out the Theater Experience Students’ theater experience has been enhanced by the addition of a concert grand, the 10th Steinway piano on campus, allowing Gilmour to become the only private K-12 school in the Midwest to earn the Steinway Select School designation.

The theater, specially designed with a music enclave near the main stage, is now the permanent home of the Steinway.

In its place of honor, the piano will always be within eyesight of the audience. It can be played as an accompaniment to the main stage action or be easily moved to the lobby for receptions or to the Black Box Theater.

“The theater is important to so many aspects of the Gilmour education - from speech and debate to drama and music,” says Ray Murphy, director of institutional advancement at Gilmour. “It’s a space that all of our students will have the opportunity to use, and it has the potential to directly impact the course our students take in life. The Steinway only adds to the theater experience for everyone.”

Murphy also noted that the school is excited about sharing this space with the greater community as it plans to host events and programs for those in the surrounding area. The first of those events was held in mid-February, when the “Broadway Princess Party” production made a tour stop in Cleveland and opted

to perform two shows in the new building. The collection of Broadway stars, who have played princesses in the Broadway productions of “Cinderella,” “Anastasia,” and “Beauty and the Beast,” raved about the performance space, the sound and lighting, and the general feel of the center.

With The Lorraine and Bill Dodero Center for Performing Arts thumping as the new heart of campus culture, the opportunities for Gilmour students to grow from that exposure seem limitless.

As for Dodero, she’s most excited about the new heights that Gilmour students can reach in a state-of-the-art space that empowers them to showcase the full breadth of their talents. The fact that the center started as a figment of her imagination, then sprung to life in lasting and meaningful ways for the entire Gilmour community, is rewarding beyond measure for Dodero and her husband.

“This was a need for a very long time, and it adds another dimension to Gilmour,” Dodero says. “For children to grow, we need to help them develop their voices. This is the beginning of it.”

community extends far beyond the structure’s walls, enhancing the school holistically. Together with the replacement of the field and track at Weber Stadium and the completion of the Figgie Field and Sharnsky Stadium project, the performing arts center becomes an important part of a larger tapestry.

Last fall, a grandstand and press box were added to Figgie Field and, over this past summer, construction moved forward on an adjacent building to house a ticket office, concession stand, restrooms and storage area, fulfilling the vision of the late Matthew Figgie ’84 and his father, Harry Figgie, Jr., to build Sharnsky Stadium in memory of Gilmour’s former baseball coach Ray Sharnsky. Plans for the next phase of the Weber Stadium renovation are also being reviewed as part of an overall master plan for outdoor athletic facilities. impressive,” says Athletic Director Sean O’Toole. “All of these are first-class facilities through and through. hile we could not gather as a group for an official Commencement ceremony, we celebrated in new, socially distanced ways. Valedictorian

Garrett Olsen ’20 and salutatorian Ian Miller ’20 prepared and recorded their remarks in advance, and on the morning of May 24, the day of the scheduled Commencement ceremony, the Class of 2020 and their families were provided links to their Baccalaureate valedictorian and salutatorian speeches. They were then invited for a special drive through campus with Senior Banners lining the campus road. Graduates were able to stop at the Middle School Arches to accept their diploma from Head of School Kathy Kenny and Board Chair Fred Botek ’85. After receiving their diplomas, students headed to Tudor House

Phi Beta Kappa The Cleveland Chapter of Phi Beta Kappa was chartered in 1947 and, over the past 60+ years, has extended its recognition of achievement and intellectual curiosity to high school students throughout the greater Cleveland area. Introductory remarks from Director of the Upper School Elizabeth Edmondson:

T

his year’s valedictorian stands out in a crowd in more than one way. At 6 feet, 5 inches tall, Garrett Olsen ’20 is not easily missed while strolling the halls of Gilmour Academy, but it is Garrett’s accomplishments in the classroom, on the basketball court and baseball field that have helped to set him apart from his peers.

Garrett now attends the University of Notre Dame, where he is studying Science Business on the pre-med track.

Garrett’s commitment to excellence motivates those around him as well. Confident yet approachable, he is a natural-born leader who is quick to help others and elevates the level of discourse, and fun, in the room. In his college essay, Garrett wrote about his passion for math and the sciences because of the straightforward, logical nature. For a student who is drawn to academic content that is methodical and predictable, it is a true testament to Garrett’s character that he has earned Gilmour’s highest academic honor during such unprecedented and unpredictable times.

Garrett, you leave behind very big shoes to fill at Gilmour Academy, and we are so very proud that you will continue to live out our Holy Cross mission and charisms next year as a freshman at the University of Notre Dame. It is my great honor and privilege to present Garrett Olsen as the valedictorian for the Class of 2020.

When many students are content to relax a bit during their senior year, Garrett’s senior schedule was loaded up with four AP classes.

Not only does he have the highest GPA in the class, he also earned one of the highest ACT scores as well. Garrett has been recognized for his achievements in Latin, chemistry and math. He has earned Highest Honors and the Head of School Award all four years of high school. He was the recipient of the Villanova Junior Book Award and is a member of the National Honor Society and Cum Laude Society. His math teacher and advisor, Mr. Screnci, said that Garrett “treats his learning like a sport because he is competitive with himself and works hard to master any concept he is taught.

He is an active and enthusiastic participant in class who puts in the practice necessary to succeed.”

Garrett is a competitor at heart and this spirit permeates all that he does. He is self-motivated and intrinsically driven, and Garrett strives for excellence in all of his pursuits. He has earned high marks in three AP math courses, two AP social studies courses, two AP English courses and AP Chemistry.

Garrett treats all aspects of life as a learning experience and has carried his pursuit of excellence into his extracurricular activities as well. From Student Council to Tobit Ministry, and Look Up to Cleveland to ESPN Club, Garrett never does anything halfway.

This is true of his athletic endeavors as well as he is an accomplished two-sport varsity athlete. Garrett made school history as the starting third baseman for Gilmour’s State RunnerUp baseball team last year. He was the recipient of the Dennis Hoynes Scholar-Athlete Award, and over the years has been named to the North Coast League’s First Team for baseball and basketball, earned OHSBCA’s gold certificate, and All-District Honorable Mention in basketball. His baseball coach said of Garrett, “He models what it takes to have success and overcome adversity in all areas of life and takes the time to help develop a growth mindset in all those who cross his path.”

20 20 Introductory remarks from Director of the Upper School Elizabeth Edmondson:

T

his year’s salutatorian was born with blue and gray running through his veins. In fact, there are more than a few faculty and staff on campus who remember the very day that he was born. He joins a long and beloved line of proud Gilmour graduates from the Pfundstein and Miller families, but today Ian Miller ’20 makes his own unique stamp on Gilmour Academy history.

As a three-year varsity member of our men’s basketball program, Ian has been instrumental in the team’s success. Over the years, he has received numerous recognitions, including the OHSBCA gold and silver certificates, OHSAA’s Scholar-Athlete Award, twotime Honorable Mention from the News-Herald, Gilmour’s 2019 Defensive Player of the Year, and was this year’s recipient of the basketball team’s Lancer Award.

Ian’s transcript, with its 24 semester A+s, is certainly a testament to his academic gifts and his work ethic. Without fail, Ian’s teachers throughout the years speak of his hard work and determination in the classroom. Never one to shy away from a challenge, he completed six AP classes and went above and beyond Gilmour’s credit requirement. Over the years, he has been presented with awards in Spanish, math and biology, has earned Highest Honors and the Head of School Award all four years, and is a member of the National Honor Society and Cum Laude Society.

Ian is not only a talented athlete, but he is also an impressive leader on the court. Coach DeCrane describes Ian as a natural instructor who excels when working with the underclassmen in a one-onone setting and who has selflessly and enthusiastically helped to coach the Lancer Special Olympics basketball team for the last three years, where he has made true friendships with the players and served as a mentor and role model to many.

His accomplishments are varied and impressive, but in his selfassessment this year, Ian shared that these are the result of years of grit and determination. He is the very embodiment of Gilmour’s motto, “Perseveranti Dabitur,” success to the one who perseveres.

Ian’s teachers and coaches most often describe him as quiet, humble and selfless. His counselor, Ms. Johnson, said, “Since freshman year, his quiet nature has remained his strength - he genuinely listens and learns from others. Over the years, I've watched him find his voice and transition from a silent leader to a more vocal one - both athletically and academically. In turn, it has shown me how respected he is by his peers and teachers alike.” Ian is the type of student who never misses an opportunity to look you in the eye and say hello when passing in the hallway and who stays after class to thank a teacher for the day’s lesson. He is the type of student who we are so very proud to send out into this world as the embodiment and reflection of Gilmour Academy, and it is so fitting that he is our male recipient of this year’s Gilmour Trophy.

Mary decided to retire after the completion of the 2019-2020 school year. She began her career at Gilmour as a parent volunteer in the Lower School Library. She was later approached

by Art Grady, the K-12 Librarian, to become a part-time library assistant in the Upper School Library.

Marc decided to retire at the end of the 20192020 school year. Throughout his four years back at Gilmour (he began his teaching career at Gilmour, working at the school from 1976-1980), he built a progressive foundation at the Lower School. He developed a team of strategic thinkers and incredible innovators and left our Lower School in an excellent position for the future. During his tenure, we saw our enrollment numbers rise and our attrition numbers shrink. He had such a positive impact on the Academy and did an exemplary job leading our Lower School and Montessori programs, raising the bar in the most positive, affirmative way.

After careful consideration, Lynn Hammond decided to retire. Lynn served as our librarian, supporting all three divisions for the past 16 years. In more recent years, Lynn’s work has been primarily in our Lower School. Her passion for literacy has been shared with countless students, faculty and staff.

Lynn’s greatest strengths were creating relationships and her enthusiasm for sharing her unparalleled bank of resources, connecting people to books and materials that she knew would be helpful based on their unique interests. We wish Lynn all the best in retirement. May you enjoy countless good books in your free time!

Marc made the decision to retire long before the pandemic hit and school shifted to the online model last spring. Throughout that period, he was tireless in his efforts to ensure our students, families and teachers were supported. We are so grateful for his leadership not just over the past months, but throughout the entirety of his time at Gilmour.

In his retirement, Marc looks forward to traveling with his wife, Rita, visiting their four adult children spread across the country and spending more time with their new grandchild. He will be greatly missed.

COORDINATOR OF STUDENT ENRICHMENT This summer, Michele welcomed her first granddaughter and looks forward to spending all the time she can with her! Over the course of her 12 years at Gilmour, Michele created a student enrichment empire.

Cindy Klemm, our Upper School nurse, decided to retire to spend more time with her expanding family. She was such a friendly face for all of our Upper School students, but holds a special place in the hearts of our dorm students. There wasn’t a dorm event Cindy wasn’t at and she seemed to know exactly what the resident students needed in their “home away from home.”

Cindy provided medical care, but even more importantly, reassurance to our students and their parents. Thank you for all you did to keep our community healthy and safe!

Linda Wheeler served as commander-inchief of our Upper School Office for the past 18 years. She was the ever-so-kind and supportive voice on the other end of the phone when parents called, she kept close tabs on the students, and she knew just about everything they had going on all over campus. She's been an avid Lancer supporter and could always be found on the sidelines at athletic events. She maintains communication with many of our alumni through social media and the Upper School Office was often one of their first stops when they returned to campus.

Starting from the ground up, she found amazing summer camps, internships, mentorships, and additional connections and resources for our students in Grades 7-12. Thanks to her, interested students spent their summers taking academic courses at Harvard, Stanford, CWRU, Duke and more; traveling on programs to places such as Italy, Greece, France, Spain, Ireland, Scotland and Peru; completing service and leadership projects at organizations such as The Cleveland Clinic, Fieldstone Farms, Look Up to Cleveland, Bank of America and Student Advocates for Youth; and more.

A bright light herself, Michele was able to spark a fire in our students, encouraging them to pursue passions that they may not have been able to identify on their own.

National Merit Semifinalists and Commended Scholars Named

hree Gilmour seniors – Eric Brandt ’21, Mollie Edmondson ’21 and Joseph Rottinghaus ’21 - were notified in early September that they were named National Merit Semifinalists.

Of those finalists, 7,600 will earn the Merit Scholar designation and National Merit Scholarships totaling more than $30 million.

More than 1.5 million juniors took the qualifying test – the PSAT – last fall, and of those 1.5 million students, only 16,000 students nationally earned the Semifinalist distinction. Semifinalists can then advance to the Finalist level of the competition after submitting a detailed scholarship application. The National Merit Scholarship Corporation states that the student must “have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by a high school official, and write an essay.” Approximately 15,000 students are expected to be named finalists.

Congratulations to Zachary Mangel '21, Liam Ryan '21 and James Zhou '21! They placed among the top 50,000 scorers of the more than 1.5 million students who took the PSAT last fall.

GREG OLSON worked his entire career in Charleston, W. Va. serving as director/head coach for a USA swimming program. He also served as general chairman for the WV LSC for more than 30 years. Presently, he works as a high school and USA Swimming swim meet official. Greg says, “I’ve ‘crossed over to the dark side’ of the sport of swimming.”

QUINN L’ESPERANCE released her second single recording, “Human Connection,” in April.

n Monday, August 17, Bob Heltzel ’65 passed away after suffering a heart attack. He was a dear friend to all in his class and was certainly a beloved friend of the Academy. He served as a member of the Board of Trustees since 2013 and was a loyal supporter of Gilmour for years.

Bob and his wife, Heidi, helped establish an endowed scholarship - the Thomas O. Callaghan ’65 Scholarship - in memory of another beloved member of the Class of 1965, Tom Callaghan. In addition, Bob was a loyal contributor to the Gilmour Academy Class of 1965 Scholarship. He and Heidi were members of the Blue & Gray Society and supported a variety of campus initiatives, including the Faith in Our Future campaign, the renovation of Weber Stadium and the golf green on campus, and the building of The Lorraine and Bill Dodero Center for Performing Arts. Bob, Heidi and the Musca family funded the construction of the Holy Family Shrine in the center of campus.

While Bob was a loyal supporter of Gilmour, his impact and generosity could be felt all around the greater Cleveland area as well.

In recognition of his loyal service to the Academy, Bob was presented with the Alumni Man of the Year Award

in 2013. When accepting his award, his love for his 1965 classmates was so evident when he said he was accepting the award on behalf of his entire class. He concluded his speech by saying, “My path was paved with 49 other classmates. What gave me the strength to pursue when it was easy to give up was faith, family and friends – and the rest is just stuff.”

Two of Bob’s friends delivered incredibly powerful eulogies at his funeral, which articulated the impact he had on his many friends as well as the organizations he served, including Gilmour.

His longtime business colleague turned friend, Tom Usher, said, “He was exceptionally generous and often anonymous and he used his success to help people that were less fortunate. Not only financially, which is important, but also a personal commitment to these organizations. He worked at them, he believed in them, and he was a passionate salesperson for them.”

Chip Dawson ’65, Bob’s classmate and friend since they met at the start of their freshman year at Gilmour (complete with the requisite blue and gray beanie for freshmen), discussed, among other things, Bob’s passion for providing children access to education. He said, “His philanthropy to numerous schools, including Gilmour of course, was transformative, life-changing, in fact, for the scholars who were able to access educational resources beyond their family means, beyond their own dreams.” He recounted his last conversation with Bob, just

days before he passed, during which Bob told him, as he had many times, “how grateful he was that he’d been given more time to try to do some good, to try to live every day better, to set a good example.”

Bob is survived by his wife, Heidi, their five daughters - Jenny Farrior ’91, Katie Ricotti ’93, Maggie Schumacher, Robin Heltzel and Erin Moore - and eight grandchildren. Bob had six siblings, four of whom attended Gilmour - Paul ’63 (deceased), Lawrence ’66, Carl ’73 and Mike ’83.

An outdoor funeral Mass was celebrated at Gilmour in the Tudor House Garden on August 22.

At the close of his remarks, Usher said, “My prayer for each of you is that someday, you will get the same greeting that Bob got on Monday night, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant.’” Truer words could not be spoken.

Tom is survived by his wife of 64 years, Carole, their six children - Debbie Casey, Timmy, Colleen Grant, Kevin '81, Sean '85 and Megan Marrie Schlickmann 90; 17 grandchildren, including Caitlin Grant Wilcox '05, Kyle Grant '07, Maggie Grant Rand '09 and Halle Grant Hoerr '11; and five greatgrandchildren.

A funeral Mass was celebrated on September 10 at St. Francis of Assisi Church.

The Marrie family said in a statement, “To know Tommy Marrie is to love him. He was so kind, so friendly, so positive and full of care for everyone.” Describing how well-respected he was by all who knew him, they said, “He listened, he paid attention and deeply cared about others. He took the time to notice you and make you feel special.”

Robert Lavelle, C.S.C., the headmaster during Tom’s tenure, reflected on Tom’s influence, saying, “It is difficult to capture the significant impact I believe Tommy Marrie had on our Gilmour community and certainly on me as headmaster and friend. Tommy was generous, thoughtful, and insightful in his counsel and leadership as a Trustee.” He added, “He was a man of integrity who quietly modeled strong faith in God, family, and a warm and caring outreach in befriending others. He touched the

n Saturday, September 5, Thomas J. Marrie passed away at the age of 86.

The beloved Irishman, who always had a twinkle in his eye, was a retired business executive, longtime civic leader and devoted family man.

Outside of his career at Swagelok Co., he was involved with a number of organizations. He served for more than a dozen years as a Mayfield Village Councilperson, including as President Pro Tem; was the past chairman of the Parent Association at John Carroll University; was an active member of the East Side Irish American Club; and a longtime member of the Emerald Civic Society. Additionally, he served as a member of Gilmour’s Board of Trustees from 1980-2015 and as Chair of the Board from 1989-1996. He was named an Honorary Life Trustee in 2015. Tom was also a past president of the Gilmour Men’s Club. He was an enthusiastic supporter of Gilmour and his service spanned four decades.

DEAR FRIENDS, This has been a year for the books, and maybe even the Good Book itself.

The Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse from Revelation are Pestilence, War, Famine and Death.

PERSEVERANTI DABITUR

Pestilence is a deadly and overwhelming disease that affects a community. The entire world has been changed by COVID-19 in a variety of ways (societal, medical, economic, academic, etc.).

War is an intense conflict between states or societies, generally characterized by extreme violence, aggression and destruction. Besides traditional war, we are also experiencing heightened political polarization and societal infighting. Both struggles have discarded with respectful discourse, opting instead for extreme verbal and even physical destructiveness.

Death is the end of life or the permanent destruction of something. COVID-19 has taken the lives of family and friends and has altered the way we live. I pray the political and societal means employed today – by all sides – are just a phase, that the destruction ceases, and that respectful discourse can once again be had in the name of harmony and progress.

And lastly, Famine is an extreme scarcity of food or any other general scarcity. Forget about war and pestilence – we have seen empty shelves where hand sanitizer and toilet paper are supposed to be.

I have a saying, which is both an observation about the world and the way I try to conduct myself: “Character shows itself in the clutch.” Gilmour’s faculty, staff and administration have done just that during 2020.

Our school has reimagined and reinvented the delivery of academic excellence, literally worldwide. It has even quietly assisted other schools by sharing best practices and remote learning capabilities.

Central to Gilmour’s mission is the notion that the mind will not be educated at the expense of the heart.

Through the use of tools such as the Socratic Method which demands civil, respectful dialogue – we seek to teach not only the “what” but the “how,” a lesson the world sorely needs right now if we ever hope to attain peace.

Our community carries on after having experienced loss this year, notably the tragic loss of an incoming freshman and his family before his very first day of classes at Gilmour; the passing of two former Board chairs, Vince Chiarucci and Tom Marrie; and the passing of Board member and dear friend of the Academy, Bob Heltzel ’65.

Gilmour endeavors to send its students into the world precisely to replenish what is scarce: respect, compassion, communication, mutuality and cooperation.

Gilmour Academy constantly amazes me. We will get through this. We will persevere. I have never been prouder than I am now to be part of our school and our community.

In a sense, it feels as though I was just writing this letter for last year’s Annual Report. But on the other hand, it seems like decades ago given all that has transpired in the ensuing months.

We have lost dear friends of the school. We have had to reinvent school as we know it to deal with a pandemic. Our students have missed out on important milestones and our teachers have been putting in double-time as they redesign lesson plans for both in-person and virtual instruction. But, through it all, our students, our faculty, our administrators and our parents have soldiered on, adjusting to the new normal and finding the good. It’s as though our school founders, Brs. Theophane Schmitt and Gonzaga Day, C.S.C., had 2020 in mind when they wrote our school motto “Perseveranti Dabitur, Success to the One Who Perseveres.”

And you, our loyal supporters, have risen to the challenge as well. We, quite literally, could not have reopened our doors without your generosity. Our Gilmour community has supported The Gilmour Fund, our various construction and

programming initiatives, and, most recently, the significant financial outlay needed to modify our campus to safely bring students back.

“Those words from St. Matthew's Gospel seem particularly apt in thinking about how and where we spend our money.

And the opportunity to determine how and where we spend our money once we are no longer here to decide is the purpose of a will. So the decisions which that will embody seem to me to be especially significant - a kind of a declaration of who and what have been most important and valuable to me in my life. And a declaration of hope for their future.

On that basis, including Gilmour in my own estate planning was a natural choice. OVID-19 significantly increased demand for tuition assistance and reduced auxiliary revenue from canceled summer programs and facility rentals. Additionally, there were significant expenses involved in preparing the campus for a safe return to school this fall. To meet these challenges and support our students, Gilmour established the COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund.

Thanks to the generosity of Patrick and Catherine O’Rourke, parents of Grace O’Rourke Routhier ’08, all donations made to the COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund were matched, dollar-for-dollar, up to $350,000.

n recognition of the Academy’s most generous donors, Gilmour created the Blue & Gray Society. Members have all contributed at least $2,000 to The Gilmour Fund, our annual giving program, during the 2019-20 fiscal year.

Their steadfast support and leadership is a confirmation of their faith in our future and of their belief in the Holy Cross commitment to “educate the mind and the heart” of our students.

The membership of the Blue & Gray Society brings together Trustees, alumni, parents, grandparents, alumni parents, friends, and faculty and staff members. Together the group contributed $833,529 to The Gilmour Fund, which was 81 percent of the dollars raised for the annual giving program in the 2019-20 fiscal year. Taylor’s Gilmour education was a product of her parents’ hard work and a generous financial aid package.

“I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to attend Gilmour,” she says. “I want to make sure that people from all socioeconomic backgrounds have the same opportunity I did. Gilmour changed the course of my life. It opened doors and exposed me to things I never would have dreamed about or pursued.”

For Greg Baran ’69, giving to Gilmour extends beyond giving financially (though he does that, too). Just as importantly, he gives of himself.

As a member of Gilmour’s 1968 undefeated football team, Baran helped organize a gathering to honor legendary coach Vern Weber. Players from all three of Vern’s undefeated football teams (1963, 1964 and 1968) attended the Tudor Lounge reception in December of 2018, shortly before Vern’s death.

Baran recalls the effective communication and motivational skills of the beloved coach.

“The gathering was an emotional experience for everyone, especially for Vern,” Baran says. “It was very meaningful. All of the attendees related positive feelings about him as a person and a coach. It felt special to be in his presence.”

in composing a commemorative book about Vern. It features highlights of the December reception, insight into Vern the coach and Vern the man, and a historical review of his undefeated football teams. Baran also has donated to the Weber Stadium Renovation Project in Vern’s memory. His generosity centers on the fact that Gilmour needs the support. “These facilities are expensive, requiring continual repair and replacement, so this is one means for providing assistance,” he says.

Baran also has donated to both the Vern Weber Scholarship and the COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund, making a difference in the lives of others. “You’re paying it forward,” he says of alumni who give. “By donating to the Scholarship Fund specifically, you’re allowing young people to experience the Academy. Let’s face it, private independent schools today are expensive. The Academy has always been intent on fostering a diverse student body, and scholarship funding supports this.”

Gilmour parents Mike and Sherri Beedles have given to the school ever since their son, Alexander ’22, enrolled as a freshman two years ago.

By donating, they are showing that they believe in the promise of a Gilmour education and the opportunities our school provides.

Giving to Gilmour as parents sends the message that you support the founding principles and core values of the school, Sherri Beedles says.

She encourages fellow parents to find their “why” for giving to Gilmour, as she and her husband have. “Whatever your ‘why,’ it should propel you to want to support the school in some way,” she says.

The Beedles’ “why” for giving was rooted in their deep faith, and it inspired them to give to The Gilmour Fund, the COVID-19 Crisis Response Fund, and diversity and inclusion efforts on campus. As an African-American family, the Beedles have a vested interest in ensuring that Alexander is receiving an inclusive world view. And they appreciate the concerted effort Gilmour has made under Head of School Kathy Kenny to become a more equitable place.

When it comes to giving, Sherri learned from a friend in development, “There’s no gift too small, other than no gift at all.” But her statement underscores the importance of giving, regardless of amount. When Gilmour competes for funding opportunities, “it’s important that we’re able to show a certain percentage of families buying into what we’re doing here,” she says.

With that in mind, the Beedles plan to continue to give. Now more than ever, when so many families are experiencing unprecedented life events, donating can be impactful, Sherri says.

“At the end of the day, everybody wants to be part of something great,” she says. “Giving to Gilmour helps make that possible for our teachers, students and Gilmour families.”

Science teacher Jessica Grassi Simonetta ’05 wanted to inspire faculty and staff to support The Gilmour Fund, the annual fund that gives the school the most flexibility in spending.

Head of School Kathy Kenny and Director of the Upper School Elizabeth Edmondson were open to boosting faculty involvement in The Gilmour Fund, however possible. In teaming up with Director of Mission Integration Whitney Daly, Simonetta’s vision sprang to life in 2019.

Faculty and staff who donate at least $5 a month to The Gilmour Fund can dress down one day a month. If they give $50 or more as a lump sum, they receive a commemorative shirt. The apparel has come to symbolize the staff’s dedication to Gilmour, and it sends a powerful message to students.

“If we can get more teachers vested in The Gilmour Fund, it will have a butterfly effect,” says Simonetta, who teaches forensic science, AP biology and chemistry. “By participating, you are buying into this school and everything it has to offer.

The shirts give students a visual representation that we’re here to support them in more ways than just the classroom.

We are buying into Gilmour as a whole — its mission, its academics, its people.”

In the 2019-2020 school year, more than 100 faculty and staff members from all three divisions participated.

Participation is an important part of the fundraising effort, because that’s where the true buy-in is represented. As with all types of donations, even a small amount can make an impact.

Daly says the fundraising effort has built community at every level of the school, from the Montessori preschool through the Upper School.

“This campaign has given us the opportunity to connect with a larger community and make them feel part of a wider mission,” Daly says. “For many of us, the little things, like a t-shirt or a gesture, go far. All of this matters. It matters that we have teachers and faculty who are supporting the school however and whichever way they can.”

WAYS TO INSPIRE

Many generous donors give their time and talent, and contribute directly to the Academy’s success by enhancing our students’ experiences. There are numerous ways to engage in the Gilmour community. You can share your professional experience at the Sophomore Career Day, mentor a senior during their Senior Project, host a student for a semester-long internship, or meet with a student as part of his/her VECTOR experience.

Alumni also volunteer as class agents to strengthen the tie between the Academy and its graduates, which helps increase alumni support for The Gilmour Fund. Additionally, volunteers are encouraged to participate with annual engagement or through fundraising events - the Women’s Club’s Annual Fashion Show; the Lower School’s Christmas Family Gathering; the monthly networking series sponsored by the Men’s Club; the Gilmour Academy Golf Classic in Memory of Charlie Tremont ’70; or many other social, artistic or athletic events on campus. Join others by being active participants - in the end you will make Gilmour an even stronger and more vibrant community.

GIFTS OF PHILANTHROPY THE GILMOUR FUND - The cornerstone of philanthropy is The Gilmour Fund, our annual giving program, which has the most immediate impact upon our students. Its focus is to raise funds to help contain tuition costs by meeting a greater percentage of the Academy’s operating budget, and to provide need-based tuition assistance to deserving students who otherwise might not be able to afford a Gilmour education. The Gilmour Fund is used to attract and retain distinguished faculty, provide state-of-theart technology and continue to grow academic and extracurricular programming. Every gift makes a difference and every gift is appreciated.

PLANNED GIFTS

Making arrangements today for a future gift to benefit the Academy is a thoughtful gesture that expresses your faith in our future.

Planned giving can provide valuable tax benefits for the donor and provides Gilmour with substantial, meaningful gifts. The following are a few ways to make planned gifts:

BEQUESTS - Through your will or living trust, you can provide a

legacy for causes that were an important part of your life. A will allows the donor to maintain complete control of assets during his or her lifetime with the knowledge that those assets will be distributed in accordance with the donor’s plan and enacted upon death.

RETIREMENT PLAN - A tax-efficient, flexible and low-cost option is to include Gilmour Academy in your retirement plan by naming the school as a beneficiary to a portion of your 401(k), 403(b) or IRA. In most cases there is no cost associated with adding or changing a beneficiary to a retirement plan.

CHARITABLE LEAD TRUSTS - A Charitable Lead Trust provides current income to Gilmour Academy for a fixed period of time. The assets of the trust are then returned to the donor or the donor’s designee. Properly structured, a CLT will allow assets to pass tax-free from one generation of a family to another.

LIFE INSURANCE - A gift of insurance that names Gilmour Academy as the irrevocable beneficiary provides a tax deduction equal to the replacement value of the policy. If you continue to make premium payments on the policy, those also are taxdeductible.

GIFTS-IN-KIND - The Academy also welcomes donations of goods and/or services for which Gilmour would otherwise have to pay.

RESTRICTED GIFTS - The Restricted Gifts category includes contributions that a donor has designated for specific projects or programs such as endowed and restricted scholarship funds.
