GILLISPIE SCHOOL | PHILANTHROPY

• The desire to promote the welfare of others, expressed especially by the generous donation of money to good causes

We call this our Annual Philanthropy Report. There are many definitions of philanthropy, and at Gillispie we focus on two that stand out as particularly meaningful when thinking about the generosity and commitment of our community:

• Love for humankind

A MESSAGE FROM THE HEAD OF SCHOOL

Dear Gillispie Community,

The seasons of a school year are quite distinct, and after finishing a successful summer session, we move to the fall. It's the start of a new school year--my favorite season of all. In our first week back, Gillispie welcomed back both students and parents to campus. What a joy! It truly is a community when all of its members can come together to celebrate children and their learning.

This report, however, is an opportunity to review and reflect on the past year; at the generosity of our families and friends; at the deep and meaningful community-building we did together; and at the many ways we worked to support our broader community. And we had so much fun! After a necessary nearly two-year hiatus, we reintroduced some beloved traditions, such as International Day and our Spring Showcase. We opened the Sandbox for business last August, and the building was a beehive of activity and inter-curricular excellence from day one. Thanks to your commitment, energy, generosity, and grace, we exceeded every fundraising goal we had this past year. Philanthropy at Gillispie is about serving the greater good. Thank you for doing that each and every day.

With profound gratitude,

This report acknowledges and honors the philanthropic spirit of our village. It is because of this mindset that Gillispie continues to strengthen and enrich our offerings to our children, in times of both certainty and uncertainty. It is because of you that we can expand our commitment to financial aid, ensuring that more children, regardless of their financial circumstance, can be nourished by a Gillispie education. It is because of you that the Sandbox is providing not only an exceptional space for integrated, creative, and hands-on learning, but an additional 7,000 square feet to maximize the health and well-being of our students and teachers. It is because of you!

We have a wonderful year to look forward to—one that will include a celebration of 70 years educating our community’s children. With your unwavering commitment, Gillispie can confidently begin to prepare for the next 70.

THANK YOU TO OUR ALUMNI FOR CONTINUING TO ENRICH AND SUPPORT GILLISPIE SCHOOL!

Gillispie alumni graduating high school this year gathered on campus for a warm and nostalgic get-together. Students, parents, teachers, and staff thoroughly enjoyed this reunion!

This year’s seniors are headed to universities near and far! Some examples of the schools that will benefit from having Gillispie alumni include: Boston College, California Polytechnic, Colorado College, Creighton University, DePaul University, Massachusetts College of Liberal Arts, Parson’s School of Design (NYC), Princeton University, Purdue University, San Diego State University, Southern Methodist University, Univer sity of Chicago, University of San Francisco…and more!

In 2018, Gillispie School established giving societies to recognize individuals, corporations, foundations, and organizations whose cumulative generosity has made a significant impact on our school. These giving societies recognize donors whose cumulative gifts have reached more than $50,000.

What a fabulous party we had! The Soir é e was the first large-scale gathering Gillispie held in more than two years, and families came together ready to celebrate! Under the tremendous leadership of Soir é e Chairs, Michelle and Pietro La Greca and Ashley and Ted Jacobs, guests were treated to a chic French-inspired evening that included a beautiful outdoor cocktail hour, Parisian-style entertainment, and a dinner that was très magnifique . Not only was it great fun to be together again, but the energy and generosity of Gillispie families was palpable, as every fundraising record was broken. Thank you to all who participated in this most special event!

C ONSTRUCTIN G SANDBOXES

The Sandbox opened for business at the start of the 2021/2022 school year, and what a resounding success it was! Students were thrilled to engage in the Science & Design program in the new Makerspace. The teaching and catering kitchen was a busy, bustling place as students whipped up healthy smoothies, practiced proportions by using recipes, and learned about different cultures through their food. The sound of music wafted through the hallways as children practiced their instruments in a bright and light-filled room. And the theater what a joy it was to see our students produce, perform, and present on this beautiful stage, projecting confidence, excitement, and mastery. Everyone was surprised at how “professional” this space is and it served as a terrific hub of creative energy and activity. We are so proud that this ambitious and mission-centric building is now in service. Come on in!

GILLISPIE GIVES BACK

• Collected dozens of cartons of medical, personal care, and hygiene supplies through our Ukraine Supply Drive

• Collected two truckloads of toys and clothing that were donated to an orphanage in Tijuana

A hallmark of a Gillispie education is a commitment to community service and an understanding of the broader world. While the pandemic limited many of our typical community service activities this year, we could not be held back! This year, Gillispie School:

• Collected and donated 39 units of blood to the San Diego Blood Bank, thanks to the 3rd grade blood drive

• Donated $1200 to the Audubon Society, thanks to the artistic and entrepreneurial endeavors of the 3rd grade

• Made and donated hundreds of dog toys to the Helen Woodward Animal Shelter, thanks to our 4th grade animal lovers

• Collected nearly 800 books which were donated to St. Vincent de Paul, under the leadership of Grade 2

• Collected nearly 100 gently used backpacks which were donated to the International Rescue Committee for use by refugee children starting school
