2019 marks 150 years of Wyoming Women’s Suffrage. In 1869, Wyoming Territory was the first government in the world to grant women permanently the right to vote, gaining it the reputation as the “Equality State.” Admission to statehood in 1890 was contingent upon allowing women’s suffrage to continue in the state. Wyoming Superintendent of Public Instruction Estelle Reel was the first woman ever elected to statewide office in 1894. In 1920, women won the vote nationwide. Nellie Tayloe Ross was elected to Governor of Wyoming in 1924 in a landslide victory, just months after the passing of her husband, Governor William Ross, and four years after women won the right to vote nationwide. She was fifty years old, and a Democrat. She brought to the Legislature the policies she and her husband both believed in: reduced spending, state loans for ranchers, and prohibition. “I had long realized that the strong, good man at my side was the vital influence in the molding of my character and thought, and I had begun to think that my individuality was almost submerged in his,” she wrote, in 1927. “But when
all at once I found myself standing alone, facing an unknown future, I knew that there had been no submergence, but that because of that association, there had been developed a more clearly defined and independent individuality with real self-reliance based up on convictions and experience.” Despite a waning oil boom economy, Ross pushed for improved bank regulations, better school budgets, increased safety for coal miners, and the end of child labor. But most significantly during her time in office, she stopped legislative attempts at diminishing the powers of the office of Governor. After losing her campaign for re-election, she was appointed vice chairman of the DNC. In 1933, Franklin Delano Roosevelt appointed her Director of the U.S. Mint, where she served for twenty years. She died at the age of 101, in 1977. She had
been dubbed by the press, “Mrs. Equality.”

About the Chamber
The Campbell County Chamber of Commerce is a membership-based, not-for-profit organization. While we work with the City of Gillette and Campbell County on many occasions, we are not a brand or subsection of our local government.
where people interested in learning about the Chamber or wanting to optimize their Chamber membership can get together over coffee. The LEAD Committee will also be tasked with developing new tools and programs to help area businesses grow and prosper, and provide forums for businesses to increase productivity, and economic competitiveness. Along with our monthly and annual events, the Chamber also offers marketing opportunities to its members, like the monthly Chamber PAK direct mailer; the bi-weekly Chamber Connection e-newsletter; digital ads on the Chamber website; physical ads in the Chamber lobby, Campbell County Map, and this magazine; and sponsorship opportunities at most of our events.
The Chamber operates with funds generated from our events, and membership dues. Monthly we offer both admission-free and ticketed events, designed to generate a business network for our community, and promote, develop, and support our membership. We focus on fostering a sustainable, prosperous business environment, and a high quality, livable community for residents and visitors alike.
The Chamber also provides discounts from its members to other members as part of the Member to Member Discount Program, and administers the Gold Certificates Program (“Gold Bucks,”) which encourages the community to shop local. The Campbell County Chamber of Commerce also is part of the Wyoming Chambers Health Benefit Plan, providing medical insurance accessibility for small businesses.
There are several volunteer committees within the Chamber, without which, we could not operate as efficiently as we do. Along with our Board of Directors, our Chamber Energizers, Business Advocacy Committee, Northeast Wyoming Contractors Association, and Gillette Area Leadership Institute Steering Committee help organize and administrate many of our yearly programs: Legislative Breakfasts, Ribbon Cuttings, the Gillette Area Leadership Institute, and the Home Show. Additionally, in 2019, we have launched the “LEAD” committee: Learn, Expand, Advance, and Develop. In late 2018, Black Hills Urgent Care of South Dakota opened an urgent care and orthopedic clinic in Gillette. The Gillette area offers three dozen other healthcare providers, between dentists, physical therapists, chiropractors, and other physician specialists. Campbell County’s cost of living index is 100, which means it’s on-par with the rest of the country. Housing rates are slightly lower than the national average, with food and medical costs slightly higher than average.

Both Sleepy Hollow and Wright, Wyoming can be accessed by Highway 59, or South Douglas Highway, which leads to the city of Douglas, and access to Interstate-25 in to Cheyenne. The town of Wright also abuts the Thunder Basin National Grasslands, a U.S. Forest Service managed grassland that boasts plenty of hiking, hunting, and fishing.

The Moon Meadows and Sawgrass subdivisions are located in the City of Gillette, south of the Gillette Golf Club, a public 9-hole course east of Highway 59. The Westover subdivision is also in Gillette, to the west of Highway 50. It is near the Bell Nob Golf Course, a public county-owned 18 hole course.

How TO GET HERE While Campbell County has no public transportation system, rideshare services Uber and Lyft are both available in-town, as well as standard taxi cab service. The primary commercial service airport in the region is Gillette-Campbell County Airport. Currently United Airlines provides two flights a day to and from Denver, Colorado. Major highways that feed in to the area are Interstate 90, which can be taken east to Rapid City, South Dakota, or north/west to Billings, Montana. U.S. Highway 14/16 begins in Gillette and can take you through Campbell County in to the Bighorn Mountains, either through Buffalo (U.S. 16) or Sheridan (U.S. 14.) Both highways lead to Yellowstone National Park. Wyoming Highway 50 leads south from Gillette to Highway 387, which to the east will lead you to Wright, and to the west will lead you to Interstate-25 / Casper. Wyoming Highway 59, South Douglas Highway, begins in Gillette, and travels south through Wright to Douglas. In Douglas you can also connect with Interstate-25, and head west to Casper or south to Cheyenne.

AVA COMMUNITY ARTS CENTER
For over twenty years, the non-profit AVA (Advocacy for Visual Arts) organization has been helping countless numbers of residents at their location on 509 W. 2nd Street near the Historic Downtown Gillette district. The center strives to bring in all types of local artists to showcase their work, and guide aspiring artists as well. Along with gallery space, classroom space, and gift shop, AVA also sells art supplies. There are classes at AVA nearly every day. Visit www.avacenter.org to check the schedule or sign up today.
CAMPBELL COUNTY PARKS & RECREATION
Campbell County has two Recreation Centers, one located in Gillette, and one located in Wright. The Gillette location features a pool with a lazy river and two water slides, a weight room, basketball and racquetball courts, tanning beds, a 42foot climbing wall, and an additional 81,000 square foot field house with a six-lane, 200-meter track. The Rec Center in Wright also features a pool with a lazy river, hot tub, weight room, workout facilities including a spinning studio, and a nearly 7,000 square foot gymnasium. The public county golf course, Bell Nob, is an 18 hole course in west Gillette. There are also two ice arenas, Spirit Hall (located inside the CAM-PLEX Events Center,) and the Campbell County Ice Arena, located near downtown Gillette, that feature year-round events like curling, ice skating, and hockey. Over a dozen county-administered parks cover the county, including a Skate Park, and Bicentennial Park in Gillette: a major community complex with multiple baseball and soccer fields, tennis and basketball courts, and walking paths.

There are two branches of the county library, one in Gillette, and one in Wright. Both feature an extensive catalog, including e-books and periodicals. Along with book discussions, public meeting rooms, and computer labs, the library offers regular classes for residents to learn a variety of topics, from money management to tech courses.
THE ROCKPILE MUSEUM is a free history museum
located at 900 W 2nd Street in Gillette. From prehistory and fossils to homesteading right through modern day Campbell County, you will find everything you need to know about local and regional history here. The Museum features regular events including kids days and two one-room schoolhouses that are used in conjunction with specialized programming from the Campbell County School District. They are open Monday through Saturday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m.
CAMPBELL COUNTY SENIOR CENTER
The Senior Center, located at 701 Stocktrail Avenue in Gillette, has been around for nearly 40 years, providing activities and programs for seniors who like to stay busy in their community. With daily lunches, exercise classes, arts and crafts days, and games, there is plenty to do. They also lead their own education programs aimed at seniors, including technology classes and Medicare assistance. CAM-PLEX EVENTS CENTER
The CAM-PLEX is a multi-use facility east of Gillette, and just south of the Garner Lake Road exit on Interstate-90. Over 1,000 acres of land includes a fine arts theater and gallery, a convention hall that can be divided depending on use, a racetrack, rodeo grounds (both indoor and outdoor), RV hookup sites, and a 21-acre park. In the winter, CAMPLEX park transforms for the 12 Days of Christmas, an annual drive-through light show. CITY OF GILLETTE PARKS DIVISION
The City of Gillette oversees more than 600 acres of developed park land inside the city limits. In addition to Dalbey Memorial Park, which features a fishing lake and disc golf course, there is McManamen Park, which features a one-mile paved walking trail around Burlington Lake. There is also a city Dog Park, an ADA accessible public City Pool,

GILLETTE COLLEGE
Gillette College is part of the Northern Wyoming Community College District. The campus features Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees, as well as certification programs for students in the skilled trades. The Nursing Program, which was started in 1983, has expanded to train both Licensed Practical Nurses, as well as Registered Nurses. The new Pronghorn Center is a 55,000 square-foot facility that houses not only the home court for Men’s and Women’s basketball, but an extensive hands-on simulation laboratory for nursing students. In addition to the Pronghorn Center and the college’s main building (which includes a café), there is a Health Sciences Center, a Technical Education Center, on-campus dormitories with full-service restaurant (open 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.), and a Rodeo Facilty (off-campus.) One of the newest extensions of Gillette College is Area 59. Located on Highway 59 in Gillette, it is a maker space for all students, not just college-level. A wood shop, machine shop and metal working area is bolstered with stateof-the-art equipment like large-scale 3D printers, AutoCAD computer labs, and two robotic arms. SOUTHERN CAMPBELL COUNTY AGRICULTURAL COMPLEX
The SCCAC is a multi-use facility located in Wright. Featuring both indoor and outdoor arenas, “The Barn” is host to multiple equestrian-related events. It’s even hosted dog shows and car shows. There are long-term boarding pens available for rent, as well.

NEWCA?
A local plan service is provided for NEWCA members, and informational meetings with city, county, and state entities are regularly scheduled. NEWCA also helps organize the annual Home Show, and administer the NEWCA Scholarship, which provides funds to local high school students seeking to enter the skilled trades.
NEWCA has two award categories at the Annual Chamber Banquet, “Project of the Year” and “Friend of Construction.” Project of the Year considers projects that demonstrate a considerable level of difficulty for a contractor. Friend of Construction honors a person or organization in the community that may not be directly involved with NEWCA, but has proven themselves to be working with the best interest of local contractors and clients in mind.
What is
volunteer committees. Through their committee board, which meets the first Tuesday of every month, NEWCA serves as an advocacy voice on construction issues, and works to boost interest in the skilled trades.
NEWCA also works with local organizations like SkillsUSA and Habitat for Humanity, to help build a better community for Campbell County. Board members meet with local students on Career Day to share their experiences working in contracting and the skilled trades.

The Gillette Area Leadership Institute is a nine-month leadership course offered by the Campbell County Chamber of Commerce. Its purpose is to provide Gillette and Campbell County with informed, dedicated individuals well-prepared to assume leadership roles within the community, which enhances the quality of life for all. G.A.L.I. sessions begin in September, and sessions are held the third Wednesday of every month. Each summer, applications are made available on the Chamber’s website for those interested in being part of the next G.A.L.I. class. Each monthly session focuses on a different topic that confronts issues that arise in our complex society. In September, an overnight trip is scheduled at a destination in Campbell County, like the Durham Buffalo Ranch. Participants get an overview of the program during this orientation, and learn basic team-building and communication skills. Over the following eight months, topics like Agriculture & Energy, Social Responsibility, Local Government, Healthcare, Ethics in the Judicial System, Education & Media training, and Quality of Life programs in Campbell County are explored through hands-on activities and field trips. In February, participants are taken to Cheyenne on a three day trip to the State Legislature. Not only does the class get to meet their local representatives and see how the Legislature functions when in session, but they also tour local military facilities.

Wealth Management. “There’s no other opportunity that can provide such exposure to the people and organizations in our community, county, and state.” “G.A.L.I. is amazing for so many reasons, but the relationships and bonds you build with your fellow classmates are beyond measure,” said Brandi Brockmoller, class of 2018/2019. “I have met some amazing people and learned about programs I had no idea existed.” The Gillette Area Leadership Institute accepts up to 20 applicants each year. The selection process looks at whether individuals demonstrate a concern about the future of Campbell County, success in their current vocation, or a commitment to strengthening their leadership skills. Participants are expected to attend all sessions and not miss more than 12 session hours in order to graduate. They also are required to do “homework” outside of each session experience, by attending board meetings not associated with their current organization, completing community service requirements, and planning a class project as a group. “The GALI experience is outstanding. The guest speakers, chamber staff, and facilitators do an outstanding job presenting lots of information in an engaging way, ” said Jeff Esposito, General Manager of the CAM-PLEX Multi-Event Facility.
Every G.A.L.I. session is an opportunity to learn not just about our community, but about one another. The lasting value of leadership programs like G.A.L.I. comes from the building of relationships and the deepening of commitment to community services that the alumni take from this shared experience. “I feel GALI was an invaluable learning experience,” said Lisa Vnoucek, Investment Specialist for First Interstate

Timeline for Wyoing Women’s History December 10, 1869 - Wyoming Territory approves first law in U.S. History granting women the right to vote. February 17, 1870 - Esther Hobart Morris becomes the first woman judge (Justice of the Peace). March 7, 1870 - The first all-female jury is sworn in, in Laramie. At the same time, Martha Symons Boies Atkinson is made the first female bailiff in the country. September 6, 1870 - Louisa Gardner Swain becomes the first woman to cast a ballot. 1872 - Martha Canary, working near Sheridan, is given the nickname “Calamity Jane.” January 1891 - Grace Raymond Hebard becomes the first female member of the University of Wyoming Board of Trustees. She began serving as the University’s librarian, its first, in 1894. In 1898, Grace turns down an offer to be president of the University of Wyoming to become the first woman admitted to the Wyoming State Bar Association. She is appointed as a professor at the University in 1908. February 7, 1895 - Estelle Reel is inaugurated as Superintendent of Public Instruction, the first woman to hold a statewide office. 1908 - June Etta Downey receives her doctorate and is made head of the Department of English at UW, then in 1915, Head of the Department of Psychology and Philosophy. She is the first woman in the country to hold such a position.
January 5, 1925 - Nellie Tayloe Ross is sworn in as Governor of Wyoming, two weeks before Miriam Ferguson of Texas, becoming the first female Governor in the country. Ross would later become the first female Director of the US Mint. She remains the only female governor of Wyoming. 1930 – Dora McGrath becomes the first woman Senator in the Wyoming Legislature. 1969-1970 - Verda James serves the first full term as Speaker of the Wyoming House. 1981 - Harriet Elizabeth Byrd becomes the first black woman elected to the Wyoming Legislature. She served as a representative for 8 years and a senator for four years, also making her the first African-American to serve in both houses. Through her work, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed as “Equality Day” in Wyoming. 1993 – Barbara Cubin is the first woman elected to Congress from Wyoming as a Representative. To date there have been no female Senators elected to Congress to represent Wyoming.
1910 - Mary (Marie) Bellamy becomes the first woman elected to the Wyoming Legislature.
2000 – Marilyn Kite becomes Wyoming’s first female Supreme Court Justice. In 2010 she is elected Chief Justice.
1920 to 1921 - The city of Jackson is the first town in America entirely governed by women.
2003 – April Brimmer Kunz becomes the first female President of the Senate.

Campbell County
Owning a small business is a balancing act. Some would argue there is no one more experienced at multi-tasking than a woman, but most women business owners will tell you they don’t even think about their gender when they’re running their own company. Campbell County, like every other county in this nation, was built upon the ingenuity, strength, and resilience of both men and women. Some were more vocal in their opinions than others, not least of which was Rachel Fulkerson, co-owner of Fulkerson Aviation, and one of the first women pilots in Wyoming.
Coramay Edelman was another daughter of Campbell County, the only daughter of one of the region’s most prolific ranchers in Wyoming: Harry Keeline. Her father was one of the original organizers of the Stockmen’s Bank, and she worked at the bank for many years, even serving on the board of directors in to the 1960s. She was thought to have been one of Gillette’s longest residents, passing away at Pioneer Manor in 1999 at the age of 100. Her family says living to the century mark was one of her goals. “I never gave much thought to age,” she told the Gillette News Record in 1998, on her 100th birthday. “That’s probably why I’ve lived so long.” In addition to keeping Stockmen’s Bank running for decades, she, along with her husband, owned Edelman Drug, and helped start KIML Radio. “My grandmother was very prim and proper,” remembers Pat’s Hallmark owner, Karen Cook. “We were to call her grandmother, not grandma. She was very well respected in the community, very involved.” Karen took over Pat’s Hallmark – a downtown Gillette landmark -- from her mother, Pat, Coramay’s daughter, in the late 1980s. At the time, Karen was just starting a family of her own. She says growing up and working in this community meant she could do a lot of things other women in business perhaps could not.
“Rachel was very possessive of the county airport,” laughs Chamber membership director Lori Jones, a family friend. Rachel was born Rachel Marquiss, in 1919, on the Little Buffalo Ranch, south of Gillette, which is still in the Marquiss family. She attended college in Denver in 1939, but kept sending word home to Gillette about how homesick she was. Her parents told her that her brother Quentin had started taking flying lessons with his friend Jim, and that maybe she should take flying lessons to take her mind off her homesickness. Not only was that the start of her love of flying, but her eventual marriage to Jim Fulkerson.
“For the first few years of my kids’ lives, they came to work with me every day,” she says. “In a lot of places, you can’t do that.” Many women are active in their husband’s businesses, or outright co-owners, making it more of a family-owned affair. Others strike out on their own. “I learned growing up that I never want to be in a situation where your spouse gets sick and you can’t step in and keep things going,” Karen says. “My dad trained me how to do everything he was doing, and over time I learned how to do everything myself.”
“The day I soloed, February 18, 1940, what an experience! High in the sky, alone, over Denver, quite an accomplishment for this country girl,” she writes. Fulkerson Aviation was often one of the firsts to provide for Gillette: the first twin engine service, the first 14-seat Boeing Airliner (the largest at the time in the county.) The Fulkerson family ranch property abutted the Gillette-Campbell County Airport, and Rachel was an active part of the airport and the Gillette community her entire life. 32 | Campbell County Chamber of Commerce 2019 2018 Membership Resource Guide
“We’re confident in what we know and what we do,” says Hand Therapy of Wyoming co-owner, Anni Stafford. “We don’t get pushed around by anyone.” Anni, along with co-owner Brittany Seifert, started Hand Therapy of Wyoming as a highly specialized clinic for people seeking rehabilitation treatment for the upper extremities. In less than three years, they have expanded to three clinics in three counties, and offer total physical therapy options as Physical Therapy of Wyoming. They say they’ve always had support from a community that’s excited to see women opening and operating their own businesses. “It’s awesome being a women owned business,” says Stafford. “I never realized how great the small business world was until we ventured in to it. Everyone is so supportive. When we bought our building, the seller was excited that women were taking it over.” “In some ways a business like mine, it’s a benefit to be a woman,” says Cook, of Pat’s Hallmark, which sells clothing and accessories, as well as cards and gifts. “Probably 75% of our customers are women. I can’t imagine a woman trying to run or buy for this particular business. Even my father, when he helped run the store, was our accountant and bookkeeper. My mother did everything else.” Expanding and growing in Campbell County is sometimes made easier because of its strong business community. Over the past four decades, women-owned businesses have increased 58% nationwide. One out of every ten Campbell County Chamber of Commerce members are women-owned businesses. Downtown, Gillette Main Street businesses are nearly 80% women-owned. When asked why they decided to base their operations in Gillette, most owners answer one of two things: the people, and the location. “The northeast corner of Wyoming was – in 1985 when I acquired my business – and still is, an industrial hub of activity,” says BKS Environmental Associates owner, Brenda Schladweiler. “Gillette is a business-friendly town. Sometimes, I hear about the willingness to work in this state without the commitment of living here. I don’t subscribe to that philosophy.”
It’s probably not a surprise that both BKS Environmental Associates -- which conducts soil, vegetation, wetland and wildlife surveys for the energy industries -- and Hand Therapy of Wyoming can thrive in an industrial town. Both businesses have been nominated for Chamber Awards of Excellence, with Hand Therapy winning Entrepreneur of the Year in 2018. But being a successful business owner -- and one of the requirements of an Entrepreneur of the Year nominee -- is to demonstrate a willingness to take risks. According to national statistics, women are more likely to start a small business than men. Does that mean women are unafraid of a challenge? For Krissy Borcher and Stephanie Bryce, the risk was opening a clothing store and consignment gift shop, when so many others have not succeeded. After four years operating their own clothing business online, they opened brick-and-mortar Red Daisy Gifts in Gillette, moving to an even bigger location on Miller Avenue one year later. “Finding the right combination of people is what makes it successful,” says Bryce. “We found a lot of local talent and brought them under one roof.” Brandy Johnson-Wernsmann, one of the newest partners at Hand Therapy of Wyoming, agrees that it’s personality, and not gender, that makes a successful business. “You have to take risk in order to create opportunity. You have to be open to things that are changing,” she says. “It’s also trusting in the people that you have. If you have a wonderful staff, it makes the risk not so risky.” For Red Daisy Gifts, Borcher and Bryce still work full-time at local coal mines, so they rely on their vendors and their staff to support them and keep things running smoothly. Trusting in the talent of local craftsmen, they’ve been able to curate a high-end boutique in a city that many say: “doesn’t have any shopping.” “Shopping has changed so much, we’ve had to adjust,” says Cook of Pat’s Hallmark. “We had a staff of 16 when I took over here, and now it’s a staff of 5. We do a lot of online orders now, we never even used to have computers. You have to do different things to survive. We don’t have the foot traffic we used to, so we keep changing.”
