Catholic Liberal Arts Education in the English Schooling Tradition
Holy House of Our Lady & St. John Calgary
A Shared-Responsibility Programme for Students in Grades 1-8
“All education is to be founded on Revealed Truth… to fit men for this world while it train[s] them for another.” - St. John Henry Newman
H
oly House Calgary provides an integrated liberal arts curriculum rooted in the context of the academic and liturgical patrimony of the English Church in Communion with Rome. Our programme fosters “concrete support” (The Catholic School on the Threshold of the Third Millennium) for families by providing students with the academic rigour and intellectual and moral dispositions needed for
excellence. At Holy House, students learn that they are made for the stars but firmly rooted in the soil. They are pilgrims in this world, serving the common good of the society in which they journey, but also recognise that they are sojourning citizens of the City of God travelling to their homeland, a better country (Heb 11:16).
Programme Distinctives: •
A university-model education. Each week,
•
A day marked by the liturgical life of the Church. Students attend Mass, pray Matins and Evensong,
students attend two days of classes in person, with teachers available throughout the week via email.
and live out the cycle of liturgical seasons through feasts and fasts. Chanted and sung liturgy enriches religion classes, cultivating a daily experience of the beauty of Christian Faith, Hope, and Love.
•
through a curriculum rich in Sacred Worship, Sacred Wisdom, Sacred Music, and Sacred Art.
•
Virtue Programme. Students are trained in the moral life via the Education in Virtue program developed by the Dominican Sisters of Mary, Mother of the Eucharist, and based on St. Thomas Aquinas’ teachings on the virtues and gifts of the Holy Spirit.
•
Instruction in Ecclesiastical Latin. Holy House Edmonton is the only Alberta school to require ecclesiastical Latin, which is incorporated in prayers, daily greetings, and classroom cultural language.
A unique expression of the revitalisation of Catholic culture. In Anglicanorum Coetibus, Pope
Benedict XVI called for the traditions of the Catholic Church preserved in the Church of England to be returned in order to support the life of the universal church. Holy House seeks to fulfill his call by preserving and transmitting the synthesis of faith and culture developed in our Anglo-Canadian heritage

“The whole fruit of their [educational] endeavors should consist in the testimony of God and a good conscience. Thus they will be inwardly calm and at peace and neither stirred by praise of flatterers nor stung by the follies of unlearned mockers of learning.” -St. Thomas More, Letter to William Gonell
