HOW TO KEEP YOUR EMPLOYEES MOTIVATED DURING THE SUMMER The summertime months can be difficult to work through.

When your crews and other employees would rather be out in the sunshine with their families on vacation, it can be difficult to keep people motivated. Why can’t everyone just have summer break, like the kids do? Life just doens’t work that way. Doing their top work most of the time is your company’s goal, and sadly not theirs all the time, when the distraction of the gorgeous weather gets in the way of their work ethic. We know your crews are amazing, but people are only human. Fluctuations in working stamina by your crews is a normal part of job life, especially in nicer weather.

Productivity Drops In The Summer Heat Here’s the bad news. It’s been shown that productivity during the summer months drops off significantly, according to United States Department of Labor’s “Bureau of Labor Statistics.” This can include employees in all sectors of industry, including the sweeping business. you as an employer combat summer burnout? Here are some easy ways to keep your employees motivated during the summer months.

Motivation Tip #4: Make Sure Everyone Schedules Vacation Time Early This is a great tip to keep your employees looking forward to their vacation days. By having everyone put in their requests early, it not only allows you to make adjustments in your company’s workload and scheduling, but it can also give your employees something to look forward to. They can easily count down the days to their vacation when they know specifically the time they are going to be taking that much needed break. It makes the time they are working more productive, because they know they will be getting some rest and relaxation on the horizon.

The “summer flu” hits just about every industry with employees taking unscheduled time off to kick back and enjoy those sparkling summer days. To make summer more tolerable, show up with special treats or goodies to give to your work crews. Even a cooler with soda, candy bars, and ice packs can be a welcome gift to take along while they are working out in the hot summer sun.

This is an inexpensive way to show your appreciation to your hard working crews that are in those sweeper trucks day after day doing a terrific job for your company.

Or another great idea is to have a “Friday Funday” where you do a different theme every week of breakfast or lunch treats in the office that they can come back to enjoy on their break. Mixing up the fun in summer does help to keep the summer blahs away, when the gorgeous weather doesn’t make people want to work as much.

BEAT FATIGUE WITH THESE 5 TIPS Operator fatigue is a serious safety issue. Operator fatigue isn’t just about falling asleep but also about tiredness, weariness, or exhaustion. Fatigue slows reflexes and affects an operator’s ability to concentrate and respond to conditions thus increasing the chances of a crash that could have a significant impact on your company’s costs and productivity.

5. Have your operators roll down the window or adjust the temperature in the cab a few degrees lower than normal; this will help them stay frosty and alert. But most important of all, encourage your operators to get enough sleep before getting behind the wheel.

Here are 5 tips to beat fatigue: 1. Create a culture of open and honest communication about operator fatigue – employees need to feel comfortable reporting their inability to do a job due to fatigue and have no fear of reprisals. Encourage operators to report fatigue – regularly ask for feedback both before and after the job.

2. Plan ahead and consider the driver’s commute time when complying with state or federal specific hours of service (HOS regulations). Teach operators that it’s not good to “push through” and that it’s better to stop and rest. Just a 15-minute break can give the brain up to two hours of alertness.

3. Educate drivers on knowing the early signs of fatigue – such as yawning, frequent blinking and drowsiness. Fatigue is more prevalent during the early morning/predawn hours.

4. Educate operators to eat light, fresh foods versus sugary or carbohydrate-filled foods that can make them feel tired and remind operators to avoid medications, including over-the-counter options that may cause drowsiness. w w w. n as weeper.co m

CROWN SWEEPING AN INTERVIEW WITH PAUL MURPHY How did your company start out in the sweeping industry?

I was 15 years old and the youngest of seven kids in 1970, when my dad suggested that the Murphy kids should buy a small sweeping business. At a price-point of 6:1 (6 x monthly gross), we purchased a list of accounts that included Alpha Beta’s, Market Baskets, Zody’s, and other retail sites that no longer exist. Average price-per-sweep in those days was $7.

With just three full-time employees, our office is centrally located in Seal Beach, CA. Why did you decide to get into the power sweeping business?

One of my five brothers had returned from a stint within the Navy and was having trouble finding employment. Dad thought that a family-owned business would guarantee sustainable work for his middle son.

What does your business model look like? The number of your total employees and office locations?

I keep a Masco 1600 to service neighborhood accounts and to provide demonstrations or special-requests. A mix of Masco, Scavenger, Tymco and Schwarze units populate our field coverage.

How does disposal work for sweeping in your state of California?

How much growth has your business had in the past few years with the improvement in the economy?

Incredibly, our monthly gross increased by 40 percent since 2012. We have balanced our dependence on retail and industrial accounts to cover swings in both sectors.

How do you get new customers to use your services?

For many years, cold-calling and letter-writing were the drivers of new business. However, the web site that we established around 2012 has created the most requests for bids in the company history. We take each request seriously by either providing a timely submittal, or referring callers to a trustworthy provider for their needs.

How many contracts do you work on per week?

Our current list of accounts totals just above 100 individual sites.

Have you added on any new services that have helped your business thrive?

For sweeping, local landfills accommodate our needs. We have to maintain more rigorous oversight with concretecleaning operations, mainly in the collection of run-off. I am glad to live in a state that takes this seriously.

What kind of strategies and policies do you have when it comes to environmental problems your business encounters?

It’s pretty simple, comply with state law and local ordinance when performing any job. Even if my personal beliefs in respecting our environment weren’t solid, fines associated with non-compliance are compelling.

How much do new technologies make a difference into your business?

New tech plays its largest role within the office. Billing and receivable methods make accounting smooth and nearly paper-free. Also, phone apps make bidding and communications a breeze. Outside the office, I’m not convinced that tracking field units with GPS is worth the investment. If I need to provide a customer with “print-outs” as proof of performance, we’ve already screwed up. A clean lot is our calling-card.

Because we are comfortable with the subcontracting model, we now offer steam-cleaning/pressure washing, landscape, and window maintenance.

How did you arrive at building a brand for your company that lets you stand out from your competitors?

Our branding is not unique, however, our trim management and debt-free position allows the 85 percent pay-scale, which is considered outrageous by our competitors. We have found that treating the owner/ operators (subs) with respect pays-off with allegiance and dedication. Our customers receive consistent quality work and our office manages very few complaints.

When summer rolls around, a new set of safety, maintenance and driving challenges comes with it.

Whether you’re dealing with extreme heat, heavy rain or high temperatures, a little preparation and some simple precautions can help keep your drivers safe, your fleet on the road and your business rolling.

5 Simple Tips to Prepare Your Fleet for Summer Driving in the Heat During the summer, it’s important to perform some extra basic maintenance and safety checks before every job. Add these extra five simple steps to your usual safety checks to get your vehicles ready on a summer day: 1) Check and top off all fluids, including oil, coolant, brake, transmission and power steering fluids. If fluid leakage is detected, bring the sweeper in for service.

2) Test the air conditioning before each job to ensure a comfortable cab temperature. If the air isn’t blowing cold, get the system repaired.

3) Check windshield wiper operation: road salt and cold temperatures from the winter are hard on wiper blades, which can become ragged from use and are vulnerable to summer heat. If they’re not in great shape, get them replaced.

4) Check your tires. They wear out faster in hotter temperatures.

5) Check tire pressure. The best way to prevent flat tires is to check tire pressure regularly. Under-inflation is the most common cause of tire failure and can be caused by excess heat build-up.

2) Increase following distances to compensate for heavier summer traffic.

4) Pay more attention when driving in construction zones and tourist areas.

5) Use good quality sunglasses to guard against eyestrain and preserve vision.

LAUNCHES NEW WEBSITE AND ONLINE DEALER MARKETING SUPPORT PROGRAM Stewart-Amos Sweeper Co., a leading manufacturer of highly productive and easy-to-operate chassis-mounted street sweepers, has officially launched its new website. The website, located at www.stewartamos.com, was designed to provide visitors with quicker and simpler access to key features, benefits, and capabilities of the company’s street sweepers, including 7 mechanical brooms and 3 regenerative air models.

New to the website are illustrations that allow visitors to get a closer look at the key features and benefits of the various Stewart-Amos street sweepers. VACALL ALLJETVAC R SERIES AVAILABLE WITH RECYCLER OPTION The Vacall AllJetVac R Series machines address an industry preference for rear reel positioning in high performance sewer cleaning.

Equipped with a Recycler option, the AllJetVac can further improve productivity while saving up to 5.7 million gallons of water each year.

Designed, built and supported by Gradall Industries, Inc., AllJetVac R series delivers excellent jetting action and superior vacuum power to open clogged sewer lines and perform needed routine maintenance quickly and efficiently.

The Vacall “Green That Works” collection of standard and optional advantages can help you save money, increase operating efficiency and protect our environment.

The R Series model, with a rear-mounted hose reel and boom, accommodates operators who prefer to work away from engine noise. The rear hose reel delivers jetting action in any direction with an optional axial pivoting base.

The Recycler option is available on AllJetVac models with either front- or rear-mounted hose reels, letting you work all day without stopping for water refills. Water is vacuumed from sewer lines, put through a five-step filtering process, and then used for jetting back through the line. Eliminating refill trips saves fuel, as does the ability to operate a truck that’s light in weight, because it is not carrying water.

To customize the models for specific applications and preferences, contractors and municipalities can choose decant valves, a cold water recirculation system, backup hose reel hydraulics, and multiple blower and water pump choices, including a proprietary 87 gpm /2000 psi water pump with 30-minute run-dry guarantee. Debris tank capacities are offered in 6, 8, 10, and 12 cubic yards. Water tank capacities include 1,000, 1,200, and 1,500 gallons.

FEDERAL SIGNAL EXECUTES AGREEMENT TO ACQUIRE TRUCK BODIES AND EQUIPMENT INTERNATIONAL

FEDERAL SIGNAL TO EXPAND FOCUS ON MAINTENANCE AND INFRASTRUCTURE CATEGORIES, LEVERAGE MANUFACTURING EXPERTISE AND DIVERSIFY END-MARKETS Federal Signal Corporation (NYSE:FSS) (“the Company”), a leader in environmental and safety solutions, today announced the signing of a definitive agreement to acquire Truck Bodies and Equipment International (“TBEI”), a leading U.S. manufacturer of dump truck bodies and trailers, for $270 million, subject to post-closing adjustments. This represents a multiple of 7.2 x TBEI’s EBITDA for the twelve-month period ending March 31, 2017, before accounting for synergies.

The acquisition will enable the Company to strengthen its market position as a specialty vehicle manufacturer in maintenance and infrastructure markets. This transaction will also allow the Company to leverage its expertise in building chassis-based vehicles, significantly expand its exposure to higher growth industrial end-markets and balance the mix of revenues it generates from municipal and industrial markets. The transaction is expected to be immediately accretive to the Company’s margins and earnings per share (“EPS”), excluding transaction costs and before giving effect to anticipated synergies.

Pending customary closing conditions and regulatory approvals, the transaction is expected to close within the next 90 days.
