More Tips For A Sustainable Office Space As a liquid waste company, your job is to remove sludge.

Okay, it’s a little more complicated than that, but the bottom line is your company is on top of the septic world.

There are surely environmental issues to worry about there, but let’s consider your office space for a moment. Are you thinking about the environment there? You can have a more sustainable office space if you desire to do so with a few simple changes. Here are some tips for a more “green” ecofriendly office space that aren’t difficult to make.

Place Paper Recycling Bins Around The Office You want to place these ideally where people are going to use them. Makes sense, right? Always have them by the desk or where the copier machine is located at well. need to recycle and use. You can always double print on paper that has information you don’t need anymore on one side and a blank side that can be used on the other.

Scan Documents More Often If you can move away from having paper files, now is the time to do it. You can scan documents and store everything in a digital format. That way you don’t have dust collecting over all your old files that you aren’t using anymore.

Practically every company has old rundown storage files that sit in the corner of the office, taking up considerable space, that aren’t a working part of your office. Files from 1984? Get them out and clean up your space a bit.

if you turn down the lights in rooms you aren’t using.

Encourage employees around the office to turn lights off when leaving meeting rooms, restrooms, and storage areas. It truly does make a difference when you use only the electricity you need. Put little notes up around the office to remind your office staff. Plus, you can change out light fixtures to automatically turn-off when someone leaves the room.

Another item to turn off is your computers. You can definitely turn them off at the end of the day. Don’t leave them on all night even with the screensaver running. It’s still going to use valuable electricity to keep it humming for no reason all night long.

Use Local Products The more local companies you can use in your business dealings the better. When products and goods come from overseas or even across county, it’s using valuable resources to get there. Just think of the gasoline being used by the airplane or freight trucks to get just one simple item all the way across state lines.

By taking time to explore local companies around your

septic company that you might be able to use, you’re reducing the carbon footprint of supplies. This is especially true with items you have to reorder and use constantly.

Look For Office Products With Less Packaging= With less packaging, that is a serious reduction in what your office is throwing away directly going into landfills.

Those landfills are getting filled at a rapid pace, so it helps to do your part. You can also explore refillable pens, staplers that don’t use staples, and other office supplies that are more “green.” Some office supply companies specifically cater to the green market and have tons of items you can switch over to that might help the environment. Most of the time the goal is to save you money in the long run. Explore using a more ecofriendly supply company.

With a little know-how and perseverance, you can have a more conscientious office space that’s even going to save you a few bucks. Helping the environment in the process is a great goal to have. Just think if every liquid waste company across the board made these changes, what an awesome accomplishment that would be.

How was Fraserwoods started?

I started Fraserwoods in 2001, with a focus on quality repairs for different types of rotating equipment. I had a background doing similar kinds of repairs for companies I had worked for previously. Back then, my mindset was that starting a company that specialized in rotating equipment repairs like PD blowers or vacuum pumps, used in so many applications, across so many industries would be something Fraserwoods could really be successful at. I enjoyed the work and enjoyed training people to do it too. As the number of mobile equipment OEMs increased with the good economic times, our focus became very much on the mobile equipment market.

Tell me where you are located?

We’re located in the Acheson Industrial Park, which is 5 minutes West of Edmonton, Alberta. Being centrally located allows our customers to bring their units to us easily, without having to enter the city limits. Also, we are located South of Ft. McMurray which is the largest reservoir of crude bitumen in the world and the largest of three major oil sands deposits in our Province. Our location positions us to service a lot of units that are directly involved in the oil & gas industry. That being said, we are also on a major ground and air transport routes so we can ship our equipment anywhere in North America.

What kind of investments have you made in newer technology in the past few years?

Quite a few actually. Investments in new technology are as important to our business as our trades people. This year we’ve invested in another new high-speed precision lathe and a new vertical and horizontal milling machine which can handle much larger and heavier jobs. That’s on the machining side, our trades technicians use quite a bit of specialized tooling. We invested in a high end bearing induction heater a few years back, allowing for more precise and even bearing installations. One of our biggest investments to date was our purchase of a Schenk Balancing & Diagnostic System. When customers send their units in for repair they want to know that the rotors inside their equipment are dynamically balanced to the highest degree possible. ISO standards call for these types of rotors to be balanced at Grade 2.5, our balancing machine allows us to achieve Grade 0.63, surpassing ISO 1940-1:2003 Mechanical Vibration guidelines. New technology allows my team to work more efficiently, with a higher degree of precision and ultimately increased reliability on our customer’s units, which is what they want.

How is your staff trained?

Our staff is trained hands on. Our technical team has many years of industry experience and spends time a

good deal of time on the shop floor. We make sure that our staff knows as much about the equipment we service as possible. That’s why we participate in industry and factory training programs and encourage questions and open communication between departments. In fact, if you come to our shop you are just a likely to see someone from the office on the shop floor as our trades technicians.

How is your website a good reference for people who are interested in PD blowers and vacuum pump documentation?

In the first quarter of 2016, I recognized the need for an online document library for this kind of equipment. There’s a lot of service manuals and spec sheets that are hard to find because the equipment is obsolete or discontinued, sometimes by 20 years. More calls were coming in to track this stuff down and it just seemed logical to have it all in one place. Operators in the field or fleet mechanics visit our site all time for all sorts of different blower or vacuum pump documentation. In the past, customers would call in to talk to our technical team, but this streamlines the process.

We’ve embraced PDF fillable forms that allow us to receive information, and respond to our customers much faster. If

someone isn’t very familiar with the blower on their truck they can use one of our forms and know the exact rotation and orientation without having to send pictures and go through the 20 questions game. This can be done on a cellphone, in the field if need be.

Describe your company’s focus on quality.

Quality at Fraserwoods isn’t just a tag line. From our first day in business, I’ve made sure that our repairs and remanufactured units are done right. Everyone who works here knows how important reliability is when it comes to rotating equipment. Getting it right the first time and meeting our QA standards is very much a part of our company culture. We employ the most experienced trades technicians. We invest in new technology and modern tooling. We test the equipment we repair prior to customer delivery, guaranteeing there are no reliability issues once it leaves our shop. In the end, we back up our work with a solid six month warranty after our equipment goes into service.

We have an extremely low percentage of rework performed every year. I’m proud of that, so is my team. Everyone here is committed to quality.

All Cen Tex An Interview with Robert Negrete Can you tell us the backstory about your personal history and how you got into the septic business? Say a little bit about your journey into this company.

Well, I’m originally from California, and I went into the Army as a young man. Then I got station in Fort Hood in 1977, which is obviously in Texas, halfway between Austin and Waco. I completely fell in love with Texas, the people, the food, just about everything. In 1983, I got a job cleaning septic tanks and I didn’t even know what it was at the time.

In October it’s our 30 year anniversary of being in business.

We’re just a little pumping company in Texas that just keeps pumping away.

How is your business model set up? When you were putting your company into action, how did that all fall into place?

The only business model I’ve ever really had is to be the best pumping service available. I didn’t have any plans

for multiple employees or tricks to get customers, but I’ve learned people will pay for quality service. That was my model more than anything. Be the best and let everything else just take care of itself.

What kind of industry research have you done to make aspects of your business successful?

When I first started out I looked around at other companies to see what they offer. I wanted the best locational trucks around so when it was time to look for them, I really paid attention to top notch vehicles. The reputation for heavy duty trucks, I plugged away saving for a long time to be able to get what I needed. Finally I bought Mack Trucks and it’s paid off over twenty years.

What are some of the qualities of All Cen Tex that make you different from others in your industry and area?

It all goes back to being in the industry and coming from the Army my motto is “first in service second to none” I modified that from the old combat slogan. So it’s really all about having great equipment and keeping an exceptional office staff to service our clients. We have customers that see our trucks and are impressed with how kept up they are. That’s a big part of why we are different.

What do you aim for as a growth percentage rate, and what are some difficulties along the way that you tackle?

It’s hard to put it into specific percentages, but we just go at it and see where the chips fall along the way. We set ourselves apart and get new customers that believe in us to show that what they are paying for is well worth it.

Tell us a little about your client base?

Being in business for 30 years we have a solid customer base. All of all clients are the biggest and the best, from small to large. We have government contacts, local city, and we do some University of Texas work. Every base is covered around here.

What are the most challenging hurdles you encounter in your industry?

At first building vendor relationships is a process.

Afterall, they help you be successful in any line of work.

If you don’t have good vendors it’s going to be tough to survive. We value them very much. As far as rules and regulations go, you have to adapt to changes in the industry or you’ll be left behind. Don’t complain. Just make the changes you need to make and evolve and adapt to the current climate. That may be customer based changes, but you have to cater to whatever is going on.

Who works at the company along with you as the owner?

We have two office ladies and they do a great job of being informative and answering questions when our customers call in. We also have two lead technicians and they each have a helper on the truck working with them at all times. We don’t charge extra for the additional labor, it just helps us to be more efficient on the job, so that we can take an extra job or two a day.

How do you boost your workers’ skills and morale?

The best thing we do is to have the helpers, Peter and Jason. They have their own system down on how to do the job well. They work really well together. Our technicians and helpers are all licensed. They aren’t just diggin holes, they are all learning while out there to do a better job.

So you’re mainly a septic pumping company as far as your equipment and trucks go?

Pumping service trucks are what we mainly use as a premier pumping company. We have tried installation, but we are just a pumping company that focuses on the

Winter Preparation With another beautiful summer bidding farewell, we can’t help but think about the approaching winter. Waste water presents unique challenges at every season of the year, but winter can make the pumper’s job especially difficult. What can you do to be prepared? Here are a couple tools that many pumpers have found helpful during the cold months.

1. Heat the valves. Frozen valves or chunks of ice in the valves on your truck can be very frustrating. There are several ways to heat them. Perhaps the most common is to have your truck equipped with heated valve jackets. This is an extension inserted just before the valve, which is plumbed with coolant lines from the engine. The engine coolant circulates around the pipe and heats the entire area. Heated valves use the same principle as heated valve jackets but have plumbing fittings directly connected to the valve itself. An easy add on product is an electric heater block that fastens to the outside 3 8 A ME RIC AN L IQUID WA S TE S EP T EM BER 2017

of the valve or pipe. Insulated valve blankets can maximize the effectiveness of heating the valves by preventing heat escape and providing a barrier to the cold.

2. Heat the tank. Fresh water freezes faster than wastewater, so the first consideration would be to heat your fresh water compartment. The coolant lines can be plumbed through the bottom of your fresh water compartment to prevent freezing. In super cold climates you may consider running the lines through the waste water tank as well. Heat tape can also be used on your tank. Always be sure to dump your load if you are concerned about the water freezing overnight while the truck is not in motion.

3. Heat your toolbox. A small radiator with a fan can be installed in your toolbox to keep your tools from freezing.

from becoming stiff and prevent any moisture that gets into your toolbox from becoming frozen.
