Gibbs Angus Ranch The Gibbs Family welcomes you to the annual “Performance on the Prairie” bull sale. This year we will be offering 55 yearling Angus bulls. Tim and Laurie purchased their first registered Angus heifers in 1982; in 1984, they started selling Angus bulls. They had previously sold bulls with Tim’s parents, dating back to 1976- that’s 46 years in the bull business! Gibbs Angus has been running Angus cattle since 1982.
continuously ever since. In the long run, beef consumers are looking for a high quality (high marbling) product on their plate, one that got there using the least amount of resources as possible. With our proven high marbling genetics from our carcass information obtained from the feedlots, we have begun to accomplish what we set out to do, and we believe it has been proven that high marbling beef is continuously sought after and preferred.
We will be offering bulls sired by: SAV Rainfall, Heiken Broadview, Sitz Stellar, E & B New Addition, Basin Rainmaker and KG Justified. We have 17 Rainfall sons available; they are a very uniform, deep bodied set of calves. Once again, we have a select group of commercial calves. They have been well received in the past. We continue to raise our own herd sires, by doing this, we can continually monitor how they work in our environment.
Our area of the country has been in extreme drought since 2017; last year grasshoppers were added to the drought conditions. Consequently, grass remains in very short supply for us. Like many of you, our goal is to keep our genetics intact.
All the bull calves are born, raised and developed at the ranch. This enables us to monitor them daily. In feeding the bulls, we want to achieve reasonable growth and weight gain without jeopardizing their soundness as a herd sire. The bulls are on a total mixed ration; it is high roughage and designed for about 3 pounds of gain.
If you would like to purchase a bull but are unable to make it to the sale, please contact either of the sales reps, Tim, Megan or Glendive Livestock Exchange to place your bid. The sale WILL NOT be online; we offer a ‘sight unseen’ guarantee on bulls purchased in this manner. Please contact us if you have any questions or would like additional photos or videos of any of the bulls. If you have any health concerns and are unable to make it to the sale, please let us know in advance and we will make accommodations to do your bidding.
We have always taken pride in providing carcass information. When selecting genetics, we have worked very diligently to select for high feed efficiency and good carcass genetics; in particular, marbling, for many years. In the early 90s, our quest for high marbling genetics began with VDAR New Trend 315. In 1992, we added New Design 036. In 1999 we added New Design 878 (who also turned out to be a great cow maker). As the industry began to focus on feed efficiency, it turned out that these bulls were in the top %2 of the breed for DMI (Dry Matter Intake, which translates into high feed efficiency). We believe the focus on DMI has led our cow herd to be easy fleshing. These genetics are the base for our herd, which we have been working to improve on

Cash or check, unless otherwise arranged before the sale. The auctioneer has complete charge of the sale, any dispute in the bidding shall be settled by the auctioneer, his decision will be final. Any announcements made from the auction block take precedence over any printed matter. Performance records and final weights will be available on sale date. All bulls will be fertility tested before delivery and we will feed the bulls at no cost or risk to you until delivery. We offer free delivery. All cattle sell under terms and conditions of the American Angus Association. Gibbs Angus will retain 1/2 semen interest in the bulls. We also retain 1/2 interest in any revenue generated from certificates sold on these bulls. The buyer retains full possession and salvage value of their purchased bulls. Papers will be transferred free of charge, on the bulls that are registered if the transfer is requested on sale day. If any problems should arise with your bull please contact us as soon as possible or no later than September 1, 2022.
CARING FOR YOUR NEW BULL Remember, these bulls are yearlings and still have a lot of growing to do. It may be a good idea to feed them a growing ration until the start of breeding season. We recommend about a 60 day breeding season with a mating load of around 20 females. It’s a good idea to supplement the bull after breeding season for 60 days, to prepare him for winter.
ANGUS SELECTION TOOLS EXPECTED PROGENY DIFFERENCE (EPD): is the prediction of how future progeny of each animal are expected to perform relative to the progeny of other animals listed in the database. EPDs are expressed in units of measure for the trait, plus or minus. Interim EPDs may appear on young animals when their performance has yet to be incorporated into the American Angus Association National Cattle Evaluation (NCE) procedures. This EPD will be preceded by an “I” and may or may not include the animal’s own performance record for a particular trait, depending on its availability, appropriate contemporary grouping, or data edits needed for NCE.

Weaned Calf Value ($W): An index value expressed in dollars per head, is the expected average difference in future progeny performance for preweaning merit. $W includes both revenue and cost adjustment associated with differences in birth weight, weaning direct growth, maternal milk and mature cow size.
Calving Ease Direct (CED): expressed as a difference in percentage of unassisted births, with a higher value indicating greater calving ease in first-calf heifers. It predicts the average difference in ease with which a sire’s calves will be born when he is bred to first-calf heifers. Maternal Milk EPD (Milk): is a predictor of a sire’s genetic merit for milk and mothering ability as expressed in his daughters compared to daughters of other sires. In other words, it is that part of a calf ’s weaning weight attributed to milk and mothering ability.

No contact calving is something that we strive for. Genetic heritability of birth weight only counts for 45% in a calf. The remaining 55% is caused by environmental conditions. A general rule is that a calf will weigh 7-8% of its dam’s body weight. If you have a 1300 pound cow, a 91 pound calf falls acceptably in that range. Another considerable factor is the weather. During the last three months of gestation, the weather can affect the calf’s birth weight. When it is cold, a cow keeps more of her blood flow to her core; therefore increasing the nutrients the calf receives. One can expect a pound more for each degree below average winter temperature. Many other factors also affect calf birth weight and calving difficulty; including cow age, weight, body condition, nutrition, gestation length and calf sex. Tri-State Livestock News
