Member Preview | FRIDAY, MAY 24 9AM Fellows | 10AM All Members Showcasing works from The Studio Museum in Harlem founded in 1968, this exhibition brings the full breadth of the museum’s unparalleled permanent collection to Charleston. The exhibition, like the Studio Museum itself, emphasizes plurality, including multiple approaches to and reflections on art created by artists of African descent. With works in all media from the 1920s to the present, the exhibition includes a wide range of well-known artists such as Romare Bearden, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Thornton Dial, David Hammons, Kehinde Wiley, Fred Wilson, Lorna Simpson, Kerry James Marshall, and Titus Kaphar. These artists are powerful voices in American art that encourage viewers to consider the world around them in new and thoughtful ways.

Luminous Landscapes: The Golden Age of British Watercolors JUNE 21 – OCTOBER 6, 2019 | Galleries 2 & 3

Drawn from the collection of British watercolors gifted to the Gibbes Museum by John H. D. Wigger, an avid traveler and collector of the watercolor medium, this exhibition showcases a selection of these captivating British landscapes created during the 18th and 19th centuries. The works on view highlight several of the outstanding artists during this time period including Paul Sandby, John Sell Cotman, David Cox, and John Varley.

These artists used the mercurial nature of the watercolor medium to their advantage, devising new techniques to capture shifting light and rich geographical elements.

Garden Concerts at the Gibbes The Gibbes partners with the Charleston Music Hall to bring outstanding live music performances to the Lenhardt Garden. Bring a picnic and a lawn chair and arrive early to find a spot—or reserve one of our premium tables—and enjoy a plein-air performance under the setting sun. Doors open at 5:30pm, with opening performances by students from Allegro Charter School of Music. Concert begins at 6:30pm. Tickets include Museum admission.

A Conversation with Thelma Golden, Director and Chief Curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem THURSDAY, MAY 23 | 6PM Thelma Golden is Director and Chief Curator of The Studio Museum in Harlem, where she began her career in 1987 before joining the Whitney Museum of American Art in 1988. After a decade at the Whitney, she returned to the Studio Museum in 2000 as Deputy Director for Exhibitions and Programs, and was named Director and Chief Curator in 2005. In 2018, Golden was awarded the J. Paul Getty Medal, along with Agnes Gund and Richard Serra. Golden will speak with Rita Scott, journalist and retired General Manager for Live 5 News, about the Studio Museum, and the impact it has made on the development of artists of African descent since its founding in 1968. Participants will have the opportunity to preview the exhibition, Black Refractions. $20 Members | $30 Non-Members

Observation and Examination: Learning to See Beyond the Surface Presented in partnership with MUSC

SATURDAY, APRIL 27 | 9AM–12PM Learn about art museum-based educational methods used in the training of health care professionals. Dr. Elizabeth Gaufberg is an Associate Professor of Medicine and Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, a senior consultant to the Association of American Medical Colleges Strategic Initiative on the Arts and Humanities, and the Director of an Art-Museum Based Health Professions Education Fellowship. Dr. Gaufberg will lead an in-gallery, half-day workshop focusing on art museum-based education sessions for those wishing to learn techniques for improving observation skills. $50 Members | $65 Non-Members | $25 Students/Faculty with valid ID (includes coffee and continental breakfast)

Prop Master Revisited: Race, Response, and Representation WEDNESDAY, MAY 15 | 6PM In 2009, the Gibbes collaborated with artists Juan Logan and Susan Harbage Page to examine the Gibbes collection and its collecting habits in the context of race, class, and gender. The provocative installation that resulted was entitled Prop Master and was designed to highlight the role the Gibbes and museums in general play in shaping social norms and reinforcing power structures based on what they choose to collect and exhibit, and what they exclude. Ten years later, artists, educators, and curators will convene to examine the impact of the exhibition in Charleston and discuss how museum exhibitions, collections, and programs play a role in social justice. Panelists include Sara Arnold, Gibbes Museum Director of Curatorial Affairs; Harlan Greene, Head of Special Collections, College of Charleston; Juan Logan, artist; Brenda Tindal, Director of Education and Engagement, International African American Museum; and Stephanie Yuhl, Professor of History, College of the Holy Cross. TIM HUSSEY, abstract painter APRIL 22 – MAY 19 Tim Hussey’s work can be described as ambiguous abstraction mainly composed of frenetic forms and indiscernible space. Hussey was born in Dover, Delaware in 1970 and grew up in Charleston, SC. He received his Bachelors in Fine Arts in 1992 from Rhode Island School of Design, spending his junior year at Parsons Paris. He has received numerous awards from American Illustration, Print Magazine, and The Society of Publication Designers.

Fletcher Williams III is a Charleston-based interdisciplinary artist whose art-making practice is rooted in a Southern vernacular. Williams studied 2-D and 3-D techniques at The Cooper Union, where he received a BFA in 2010. In 2013, Williams returned to Charleston and began creating works and installations that explore historical and contemporary narratives of culture and utility that are unique to the Lowcountry.

Mary Jackson is an internationally-recognized master of sweetgrass basketry. A recipient of the MacArthur Fellowship in 2008, and many awards since then, Jackson’s work is in major collections around the world and is prized by collectors and scholars alike. Jackson will demonstrate the Gullah tradition of sweetgrass basketry, one of the oldest art forms of African origin. $10 Members | $15 Non-Members (pre-registration required)

Kristy Bishop is a fiber artist focused on weaving, natural dyeing, surface design, and historically-inspired costume. She lives and works in Charleston and has participated in artist residencies at the city of North Charleston in 2012–13 and at 701 CCA in 2015. At the Gibbes, she will weave tapestries inspired by fabrics depicted in paintings on view in the 18th and 19th century galleries. These tapestries will be transformed to a more utilitarian fabric, questioning ideas of labor and how it is valued.

Connect, Collab, Collect: Artistic Enterprises at the Gibbes Museum THURSDAY, APRIL 25 | 6PM Past, current, and upcoming Visiting Artists will share their process, their residency concepts, and their part in a new initiative to create artistic product collaborations with the Museum Store.
