Education Literary Gibbes: A Virtual Book Club Discussion FRIDAY, JULY 10 | 1PM Join us for a book-club style discussion of Hold Still, by Sally Mann in collaboration with Charleston County Public Library inspired by the photograph Deep South, Untitled (Tree with Two Streaks), 1998, by Sally Mann in the Permanent Collection and currently on display in the Modern and Contemporary Gallery.

The Gibbes is now hosting gallery hours, during which our team of knowledgeable Docents will be stationed throughout the Museum to answer questions and offer insight.

Virtual Art of Jazz We are delighted to share our From the Archives: Art of Jazz Series Edition with you! The Art of Jazz is an annual performance series presented in collaboration with the Gibbes Museum and Charleston Jazz. Under normal circumstances, we would all be enjoying this series this summer live and in person, but have postponed perfomances this year due to COVID-19. Each month, we will release a full Art of Jazz performance from a past year on Facebook and YouTube.

Gibbes Fellows

The Gibbes Museum Fellows program brings together individuals and businesses who share an appreciation for the arts and a personal commitment to enhancing Charleston’s only art museum. Fellows level membership provides art enthusiasts with the opportunity for special programs and events, travel opportunities, and exclusive experiences. This summer, the Gibbes is offering a series of in-person and virtual programming for our Fellows Members. Registration for all events is required and capacities are limited.

From the Vault WEDNESDAY, JUNE 10 | 4PM Smith and Director’s Circle Fellows will have special on-site access to works from the Gibbes renowned Japanese woodblock print collection. A selection of prints will be pulled from the vault and displayed at safe social distances for an up-close tour of the prints with curator Sara Arnold and executive director Angela Mack.

Artful Thinking with Dr. Jeb Hallett WEDNESDAY, JULY 22 | 6PM

An Evening with Jonathan Green and Richard Weedman WEDNESDAY, JUNE 24 | 6PM All Fellows will gather virtually for cocktails with acclaimed artist Jonathan Green and his partner and studio director, Richard Weedman, who over the last 40 years have amassed a significant collection of 20th and 21st century American paintings, sculpture, and works on paper. The collection, which will go on view at the Gibbes in August, expands the traditional notion of American art and identity, embracing a Pan American approach that goes beyond the United States to include art and artists of African, Caribbean, and Latin American descent. In addition to Green’s own work the collection highlights include works by such notable artists as, Jacob Lawrence, Elizabeth Catlett, Romare Bearden, David Driskell, Sam Gilliam, Ruben Gonzalez, and Reynier Llanes.

All Fellows will gather virtually for an interactive discussion around the concepts of Artful Thinking. Focusing on a work from Central to Their Lives: Southern Women Artists and the Johnson Collection and works from his private collection, Dr. Jeb Hallett will guide participants through a close looking exercise. By following the Artful Thinking process, participants build observation and communication skills as well as create a deeper understanding and appreciation for the artwork.

HARLESTON, SMITH, AND DIRECTOR’S CIRCLE MEMBERS

Devotion and Fantasy, Witchcraft and the World’s End WEDNESDAY, AUGUST 5 | 6PM Harleston, Smith, and Director’s Circle Members will join Dr. Lawrence Goedde, guest curator and professor of art history at the University of Virginia for a virtual discussion on Northern Renaissance art and a preview to the Charleston Collects exhibition that opens at the Gibbes on October 9.
