plit.Knit’s project explores the synergy between knitted membranes and active bending fiberglass rods as boundary supporting material. The innovative trajectory that this study examines in the field of knitted structures, is the ability to be transformable according to users’ needs. This is accomplished through the “InLace” technique that is introduced as the essential transformable parameter. In this context, traditional knitting techniques are revisited and enhanced through contemporary computer-machine logics as a medium for the exploration of their space making capacities.

As a result of the research is raised up a Rental Startup of Space Organisers - Split.Knit - and its vision is to offer to future customers custom-fit products for indoor and outdoor spaces. For this reason, a website was created that includes not only all the Split.Knit’s standard products, but also an interactive configurator platform that allows future customers to design a custom product from scratch according to their specific demands.

Thus, two architectural Scenarios are mainly introduced. Firstly, spatial interior organizers for Co-working Office spaces and secondly, a series of outdoor flexible knitted structures for the Olympic Games of Tokyo 2021. Regardless of their scale, the products are designed to be flexible, lightweight, and easily assembled/reassembled.

he building is located on sloping terrain of 156 to 164 meters above sea level. As a result, the view is opened to Attica’s seaside panorama [Rafina, Nea Makri, Marathon]. The basic design principle was based on the utilization of the altitude, the slope, and the plot’s view. The building volumes respect the surrounding built area and are installed smoothly in the environment, without blocking the surrounding buildings’ view.

The composition consists of two distinct building volumes with green roofs as a continuation of the terrain’s slope, outdoor gathering places, and an outdoor amphitheater. The building complex is accessible from all sides of the plot.

Creating two distinct buildings, autonomous opening hours for each building, and an ideal separation of programs and functions are achieved. Specifically, the small building [BUILDING II] includes a small Library and an administration office for the supervisor and is addressed to functions that demand peace. The large building [BUILDING I] has been designed as a multipurpose space for different events and activities such as lectures, gatherings, performances on the ground floor, and art workshops (painting, sculpture, ceramics, etc.) on the first-floor loft.

The installation is fully integrated into its environment, and the terrain undergoes minimal excavations and earthworks. The whole design emphasizes the need to enhance the green “footprint of the area,” a crucial issue after the area’s catastrophic fire of 2018.

T

he_Twister code explores the potential of a single loopbased operation to generate complex freeform shapes. Even though the code can apply to multiple scale products, the goal was to create a code in which you can handle several parameters towards the production of tower skin models.

The parametric process affects multiple attributes such as the a_height, b_twisting, c_overall size variation, d_central faces’ voids, and e_corner openings’ pattern. The final produced forms are mesh-based Rhino SubD geometries which represent high precision smooth organic shapes.

The Twister Tower was further developed and enhanced by a central core that constitutes the bearing structure and the vertical circulation. At the same time, the metal trusses at the perimeter of the slabs support the external tower shell made by GFRC cladding panels, with a glossy, metallic automotive-like finish.

hrough the geomythological approach, one could associate the Lernaean Hydra’s story with the natural topological features of ancient Argolis. The Lernaean Hydra symbolizes the hydrology of the specific geographical area. In contrast, Hercules’ battle with the beast stands for man’s attempts to cure the ills emanating from local phenomena, such as the harmful presence of the Lerna marshes might have been. In his drawing “Hercules Slaying the Hydra,” Raphael Lamar West accurately captures the intense effort with which man confronts nature.

Besides the mythological aspect, one can observe the conjunctural similarity of the “shapes” in West’s drawing with those of the project area’s topography – like the irregular “lacy” coastline, as the beachfront meets the water. This curved irregularity is, of course, a prevailing feature of the small peninsula where the project is situated, as well as of the Argolic landscape and the Peloponnese in general, consisting of low hills and terrain recesses and projections, reminiscent of a “wave drawing,” while being constantly transformed.

The architectural idea renders, on both a pragmatic and symbolic level. On the one hand, the curvilinear nature of the place’s terrain, and on the other the historical metaphor, by setting the building volumes in place and directing their “movement” as if they were large scale carved stones, an integral part of the natural panorama.

he “Wave” residential building is adjacent to the Glyfada Golf Club from the east. The design process envisioned two interconnected volumes within one continuous structure parallel to the property’s longer side, in direct conversation with the natural characteristics of Place and the View.

The design process was driven by a careful manipulation of boundaries that define movements, pauses, and qualitative differences. In response to the panoramic nature of the site, the inner structure demonstrates distinct, yet related viewing priorities and spatial roles. The organizational strategy opens a dialogue between the landscape and the building, articulating its interior into areas that range from communal to private, extroverted to introverted, day-to-day to impromptu, depending on the differentiations of both space and view. In this light, the building serves as a mediator between the user and the environment at the intersection of multiple narrative and analytical flows.

This emergent microcosm provides an intricate experience based on the dynamics between the man-made and the natural, the point of focus and the background, the familiar and the unknown, triggering sensations and emotions that capture the moment.

Throughout this journey, experiences, spaces and materialities converge, either as parallel or as complimentary events. An earthy material and a non-material – marble and glass respectively – comprise the building’s envelope, describing a transition from the natural to the built. Their relationship is explored through a simple constructional approach, which accounts for matters of texture, color and response to light. These dynamic relationships strike a balance in a final form that seems to be in motion; a materialized highlight of the entire design process.

hile wandering around the Athenian city-center, there is an obscured connection between the concealed historic landscape with the apparent urban landscape. The “Ancient Circuit Wall of Athens” is a crucial element of differentiation and delimitation missing in the modern urban reality of Athens and seeks its retrieval. It is also known as the “Themistoclean Wall,” dated between the mid-4th century and the 2nd century B.C. The study aims to retrieve and showcase a large part of unveiling wall remnants, which remain concealed beneath modern city growth and urban terrain, at a low or deep level, between infrastructures and building foundations.

Consequently, this will actualize the upcoming enhance of both the historical monument and the urban landscape. The latter will play the critical role of the ancient wall’s “urban vitrine.”

This unified public showcase of the Athenian wall monument is a large-scale urban intervention. It includes both the archaeological walk on the ancient level of the “bedrock” [ancient rocky terrain] and the “urban walk” in the built environment and open public space of the modern city in which the historical landmark is revealed and exposed.

In this project, the modern urban Athenian elements that are either neglected or collapsed are upgraded by this archaeological landmark. Such elements are internal non-built areas of building blocks, shopping arcades, cultural spaces, and open public spaces of the built environment. This unified linear urban intervention integrates all of these different aspects of the city, supports and reclaims them. The Athenian city center is upgraded.

SPERANZA THE DINING ENCLOSURE

T

he dining place, the common focal point around which the “meal ritual” is taking place, has lost its social nature. The interest has shifted to our phones’ screens. The human, who is considered to be “social” becomes “isolated”. Communication is now dry and tasteless.

The dining table’s centrality is converted into linearity. The absorption of the necessary equipment strengthens the table’s ability to attract people for food preparation and consumption.

The table turns into either a “multi-tool” a “two for one offer” that no one can refuse.

The unified table is the common platform around which the eight attendants participate, collaborate, and interact during food preparation to dining. After the consumption, the dinner is completed with the act of “defecation”. The toilet seat, which is placed on an elevated podium at the end of the table, is the most comfortable in the room amongst the other eight.

“Speranza”, which is the island on which Robinson Crusoe was shipwrecked (means “hope” in Italian), is surrounded by solid walls. The enclosure gives the opportunity to discover human communication from scratch. The vertical staircase is the “one and only” connection with the outer world.

TASTING ROOMtasting room that visitors ive your myth inWINE the “Altar”.

A wine can taste exceptional wines and enjoy the view of the vineyards. With an eco-friendly structure made from timber and the barrels’ French Oak used both in the interior and the exterior, warm and welcoming space is designed.

The layout of the space allows for alternations to the table positions depending on needs. The large rectangular dining space is connected functionally and optically with the exterior porch and is it is oriented to look at the landscape of the vineyards. Thes secondary uses are organized in a functionally autonomous zone behind the dining space.

The structure is comprised of Cross Laminated Timber (CTL) panels and three layers of wood placed at rigid angles against each other. This kind of Timber (CTL) is a lightweight, prefabricated, ecofriendly material that contributes greatly to the structure’s thermal insulation.

“Altar” is based on a sustainable design direction. Besides the ecological material study, the room’s architectural elements and position take into account the utilization of the sun orientation.

In summer months, the strong sunlight is filtered through the vertical wooden elements-shades, while in winter months, it is allowed to enter the building freely from the large glass window facing the vineyards.

he proposal concerns a place of acoustic and music experience located in Castellocampos, Patras, by the stream’s “Charadros” outfall. The visitor aims to perceive the blends, contradictions, unifications, collisions of natural and artificial sounds derived from the surrounding site elements’ activity to seek experimentation through music.

Additionally, the concept of experimentation exists in the main buildings’ complex design. The programs (music education, music practice/experimenting, theater, bar/restaurant) and the volumes of the complex that host them are placed according to the environment’s elements (road/train, stream, urban fabric).

The relationships between them are translated into the project, spatially and conceptionally.

The sound experimentation becomes feasible through the observation spots, which are small-scale camouflaged underground amphitheaters. These are distributed strategically around the site. [near the coastline, inside the stream, into nature, under the rail tracks, parallel to the road].

The characteristics of the sounds derived from the main site elements (intensity, width, iteration) have determined the shape, the form, and the density of the gaps of the outer shell. The sculpture is located and fully harmonizes with the environment while subjected to several decay changes [air, rain, corrosion, ravages of time].

This “Soundscape” offers acoustic games, chances for observation, and musical experimentation. The acoustic memory is redefined.
