April 12 /Second Sunday of Easter “PE ACE BE WITH YOU.” WE OFFER these words to one another
each time we celebrate Mass. In a world that is laden with tumult, we take this little moment to offer peace to one another. This is the same offering that Jesus shares with his disciples as he appears to them in the upper room. They have been through a lot and are likely wrestling with the news of the Resurrection after the horrors of Jesus’s passion and death. Thomas’s doubt is preceded by greetings of peace, and the disciples rejoice at seeing Jesus. What peace can we bring to one another during our own
times of tumult? What kind of joy and jubilation can we share in the face of our suffering and that faced by our brothers and sisters around the world? Paul’s reminder that there will be trials remains true for us today and will always ring true to us. But it is the deep and abiding peace and joy of the Resurrection that Jesus continues to offer us that will carry us through our trials today and in days to come. How do we find and rest in this true peace Jesus offers, and then share it with others—not passing platitudes and shallow optimism, but the deep and satisfying peace offered to us in the Resurrection? —ERN

April 19 /Third Sunday of Easter H AV E YO U E V E R F E LT YO U R H E A RT burn within you? Not the result of a bit too much spice in your food when you are late in pregnancy, but the stirring and warmth that resonates deep within. If I think back on those moments where I have been most aware of the presence of the Holy Spirit and the call of Jesus, there was a physical feeling there. It has manifested in tears (as I am someone who cries easily) but also in a sense of warmth and awe that seems to radiate out from my core. There have been times when I didn’t even realize that it was likely the Holy Spirit moving within me, but reflecting deeper helped me
notice those movements that resonated not only in my spirit but in my body. Jesus’s offering of his body in the Eucharist reminds us that the work that God invites us to is not something intangible. As Jesus dwells within the body and blood we receive, Jesus dwells in us as well. It isn’t a clever idea but something we can viscerally feel in our bones if we can be attentive to it. For many, it can be difficult to trust our bodies. The disciples in Emmaus offer us the encouragement to trust that God is fully present in and through us, body and soul. —ERN

April 26 /Fourth Sunday of Easter I DID NOT FULLY UNDERSTAND THE depth of this passage until I became a parent. I have always known the voices of my parents and other loved ones, but my ears have never been so attentive as when I had my own children. My ears are piqued when I hear a cry and quickly note if it is my child or not. And even amidst the chaos of family life, my voice can carry through to my children quite quickly. Even as babies, they would rest more easily with my husband and me, no matter how wonderfully they were cared for by others. As they have grown, we have received the tantrums and struggles they aren’t willing to show to anyone else.
I understand differently now this image of being a sheep in God’s beloved flock. That even if God is out looking for one of the many, my voice and my cry will catch God’s attention. And no matter what my struggles are, I can bring them to God. Knowing the voice of God in my life and knowing that God knows mine isn’t simply about marking myself as part of the flock but about acknowledging and embracing God’s invitation to an intimate relationship. How can we see our discipleship and relationship with God not simply as membership in a club but as part of a loving family? —ERN

May 10 /Sixth Sunday of Easter T H E SA M E A DVO CAT E T H AT J E S U S S E N T to be with the disciples in the early days remains with us now. Is that not wild to imagine? Though it has been two millennia since Jesus sent the Holy Spirit, the same Spirit remains with us now. The Holy Spirit has not changed, withered, or taken a break. Of all the changes and evolutions of the world over two thousand years, the Holy Spirit has been a constant presence to us, accompanying disciples along the way as they discover in their own way how they are called to make God’s love known in the world. We see in the early church the importance of that Advocate,
of the encouragement to go into new places and to people who did not know Jesus and bring the Holy Spirit into their midst. Proclaiming the good news has never been easy and will not become simpler any time soon. Knowing that all those who came before us, back to the first apostles, needed the Holy Spirit should not discourage us but offer deep consolation that we are not alone. We may face deep challenges, new and old, but we will not face them alone. How might we carry the Holy Spirit with us and pass on this gift we have been given by Jesus, still present today? —ERN

We may not be watching as Jesus ascends to heaven, but this can be another moment for us to look within ourselves and at each other and find our way into the moment of “Okay, I can do this.” We have traversed 40 days of Lent into the suffering and death of Jesus and into the astounding joy of the Resurrection. What do we do with what we have learned? How do we move from doubt and despair to hope and joy? And how do we let all of that move us to action, to a different and, hopefully, more deeply grounded and faithful way of living in the world? —ERN
am honest, I do not know what else I would do at that moment. When you lose someone you love, are you ever really ready? Do you really know what to do with yourself in that moment when you realize that they are actually gone? With many things in life—birth, death, new jobs, new homes, or a multitude of other new beginnings—you can prepare in every way possible, and once reality comes, there is still a moment of shock—that feeling of “Can I really do this?” and figuring out how to shift to “Okay, I can do this.”

May 17 /Seventh Sunday of Easter T H RO U G H O U T T H E G OS P E LS, W E S E E J E S U S step away from the crowds or take time for prayer. We even begin Lent with his 40 days spent in the desert and dealing with temptations. As the season of Easter winds down, we are given this image of the apostles, now without Jesus physically in their midst, beginning this new stage of life and discipleship by gathering together and praying. In a world where there is always something to do or somewhere to go, we see the disciples first dedicating themselves to pray as a new community. Where does prayer fit into our life anew? We have come
through Lent and this season of Easter, and as we discern where God has led us and where we might begin, where have we leaned into the gift of prayer? A life of discipleship will never be an easy one, and we will face struggles and temptations as Jesus and the apostles did. In all of it, do we truly give enough time and attention to our prayer? It is easy to get caught up in the best way to pray or plan a liturgy or in making sure all the details are running smoothly. In all of it, where can we make the space to genuinely speak and listen to God, both with ourselves and with our communities? —ERN

May 24 /Pentecost I D O N ’ T K N OW A B O U T YO U, B U T I have certainly had the experience of words coming out of my mouth that surprised me. Sometimes it has been the surprising joy of having articulated exactly what I wanted to in that moment. It has also often been things I wish I could put back into my mouth. For as long as I can remember, my dad encouraged me in a prayer he said frequently and one we offer before the Gospel each week: Be on my mind, my lips, and my heart. I have learned to offer this prayer frequently outside of Mass in all manner of conversations: with those whom I serve, with my children and spouse, when
navigating challenges. I continue to learn to trust that the Holy Spirit will give me the words I need. Is this not what the Advocate does for us—empowers us to speak and act in ways we would not have thought possible? The apostles had a seemingly impossible task of carrying on the good news of Jesus without Jesus. We have all-new (and yet impossibly old) challenges facing us today as we encounter multitudes of injustices in the world. In our celebration of Pentecost, may we remember that the Holy Spirit remains with us so that we can believe we are capable of what we thought impossible. —ERN

not always the best at being mindful of how I can be in better relationship with those around me. I also am not always mindful of the ways I can be in better relationship with my brothers and sisters in Christ around the world. There are a lot of things I could mend and that need mending. One does not have to look far to notice the immense suffering of so many and the intensity of brokenness in our world. It remains easier to notice where others might need to mend their ways than to focus on my complicity and my shortcomings.
The mending is not easy, but Paul reminds us that we are to encourage one another. When the difficult work of tending to the brokenness of the world is too much, we have one another to offer love, support, and encouragement along the way. Celebrating the Trinity gives us an opportunity to remember this beautiful mystery of a God who is deeply and dynamically relational and calls us to be the same. As we emerge from this joyous time of Easter, what might it mean to mend our ways? Where might we offer one another the kind of encouragement so desperately needed to mend the brokenness we encounter? —ERN

June 7 /Body and Blood of Christ M Y K I DS I D E N T I F Y W I T H T H E F O L KS who seem astounded at being given flesh and blood to eat. We’re in the season of First Communions, and no matter how theologically educated you are, walking kids through consuming the body and blood of Jesus can be tricky. Their main question is not a bad one: “Why would we do that?” Why, indeed? Why does it matter what we consume? What difference does it make to us? Consumption is a daily practice for anyone, and our world gives us so much to consume and take in. We are inundated with ways to take in food, news, images, music, podcasts, social
media posts, videos, and so on. There is so much in our world to take in, and much of it is engineered to leave us wanting more. Jesus’s offering of his body and blood to us gives us something that lasts. It is an offering of love and self-gift, of deep desire for closeness. There is no trick or algorithm meant to subtly manipulate; Jesus wants to give us deep satisfaction and the consolation that he will remain in us. Are we open to receiving this gift? There are many other sweet distractions that satisfy us briefly. How do we stay open to the eternal life that is always on offer to us? —ERN

June 14 /Eleventh Sunday in Ordinary Time I NEVER TOOK ANY BIBLICAL L ANGUAGES in graduate school, but I keenly remember the class where I learned about how insufficient the translation is that Jesus was “moved with pity.” Jesus was deeply moved—moved in such a profound way that one cannot but act in response to what has been witnessed. Here Jesus sends out the twelve because he saw the needs of the people in front of him. Jesus’s love for his people and his openness to them instigated the sending of the disciples to tend to their needs, both body and soul. Are we just as open to being so deeply moved by what we
witness that we cannot help but act in response? Are we capable of that kind of deep conversion that calls us to care for the bodies and souls of our brothers and sisters? I admit it is a bit scary to consider the possibility of what would be asked of me if I allowed myself to be that deeply moved by encounters with those more vulnerable than I and those most deeply in need of God’s love and care. But this is what Jesus will always invite us to. Do we have the courage to be open to encounter—to be open to the kind of conversion that leaves us no choice but to care for those around us? —ERN

June 21 /Twelfth Sunday in Ordinary Time I H AV E T R AC E D T H E T I N Y CO N TO U RS of my children’s faces as they slept, especially as infants. I have catalogued in my mind their freckles and birthmarks and the little things that make them so uniquely themselves. I know the shape of their toenails and the pitch of their laughter. I read today’s Gospel and marvel at the idea that God sees me and does the same. God knows each (increasingly gray) hair on my head. God knows each question, each longing, each hope that lives in my heart. Can I rest in the knowledge that God pays such intimate attention to me, too? Can I carry myself into the world as

someone who knows and trusts that they are deeply loved by God? Moreover, can I recognize that as carefully as God counts the hairs on my head, God has that same love and care for each and every person? If I am to trust that God knows and loves me so intimately, I have to also trust and believe that God has the same care for all others, even those I may not personally be as inclined to care for. June 28 /Thirteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time I S P E N D A FA I R A M O U N T O F my time at home trying not to interfere in my children’s conflicts. Where my spouse and I do decide to actively interfere is when we hear one chasing the other with a hastily muttered “I’msorryhowcanImakeitbetter?” They know they have to name what they did to hurt the other and offer to make amends. We have begun insisting that if the apology isn’t about making amends with their sibling and is just a way to get out of trouble, it doesn’t count. Why we say what we say and do what we do, in fact, matters. Jesus is calling our attention to the motive behind how we
receive others. Am I receiving prophets and righteous people because I recognize and value that they are prophets and righteous people? Or am I trying to appear righteous myself? Or am I just checking a box so that I can avoid eternal damnation? Am I driven by guilt and fear or by genuine love for the person in front of me? It takes courage to confront our true motives, and we may not always be pleased with our honest assessment of our hearts. It takes wisdom to truly identify obligation that masquerades as love and fidelity. How can we keep shaping our hearts to recognize and receive the truly righteous among us? —ERN

July 12 /Fifteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time AS A C H I L D, I T H O U G H T YO U could only be one kind of soil in the parable of the sower. You were rocky, thorny, or rich soil, and that’s how it was. We would draw photos in our religion class of seeds and the different soils. We all wanted to be the rich soil, of course. Who would want to be filled with thorns and rocks? As a child, I had not really experienced the thorny and rocky seasons of life. I had not felt the moments where God’s word was choked or didn’t really take root. I had also not felt the moments when God’s word really did take root and what it was like for the movement of the Holy Spirit to stick within

me. I hadn’t had to discern which things that grew from me had deep roots and which ones would wither. This parable grows with us and the different seeds that have fallen around us. How can we notice when we are in the midst of rocky or thorny seasons and which corners of our hearts still need to be enriched? Jesus will continue to sow seeds within us, no matter our season or soil. The seasons will come and go, and even if we are deep in thorns, some seeds will find their way to the bits of rich soil. —ERN

July 19 /Sixteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time WE ARE OFFICIALLY DEEP INTO THE parables. We have images of wheat, yeast, and tiny seeds growing into sprawling bushes. The kingdom of heaven may look like a lot of different things, but of one thing we can be sure—the kingdom of heaven moves. It starts small, but it doesn’t stay that way. It is never one big movement or one big burst, but a thousand tiny growths and shifts that slowly but very surely become something much greater than they were in their origin. Any parent of a teen (or even a toddler) can marvel at the size of something that used to be so tiny it couldn’t even hold up its own head. Sitting becomes
crawling becomes walking and then running. The growing is small but ever so mighty. Are we moving with the kingdom? Are we letting the kingdom move us along with it? Growth may take time, but it doesn’t actually stop and wait. Do we see where we are all standing in the midst of what grows around us? We can’t stop the kingdom of heaven—that’s all in God’s hands. But we can be part of how it moves and grows. Where can we be the yeast that brings just enough bubbles to keep expanding and rising until we’re spilling over the edge? —ERN

goods superfluous. There is no hardship in giving up what you have if it isn’t life-giving in the first place. What can we be rid of that gives us the freedom to claim the joy and eternal life that God is offering to us? Can I see with such singular clarity where that treasure is hidden that I may put everything into obtaining it? This is not simply a test or a check box. What is God inviting us to be rid of so that we can claim our joyous and generous reward in heaven with two open hands? —ERN
field of treasure? The note of this parable is simple and yet also profound. The cost doesn’t matter—it’s the pearl that matters. Who cares if you have all the wealth in the world if the real gift of the kingdom of heaven is beyond your reach? It sounds trite, but it is a perpetually important lesson that money does not buy happiness. It doesn’t buy eternal life, and it doesn’t buy real joy. It doesn’t buy me peace of mind or true consolation in God. The person who finds treasure in the field decides to buy it out of joy! The joy of the kingdom of heaven renders any earthly
