November 29 /First Sunday of Advent A N OT H E R A DV E N T B E G I N S , A N D A LT H O U G H I write this months before, I imagine by this first Sunday I will already have a robust December calendar. I make plans for December in the perpetual belief that I can plan out a spiritually rich Advent alongside a memorable and joyous Christmas season for my family. I can organize everything just so, making sure we have time to celebrate with those we love, cherish our time as a family, and be present to this season of quiet watchfulness. Maybe this will be the year it all goes off without a hitch instead of being a year of epic disruptions.

And then Isaiah gives us this image of us being the clay in the hands of God, the potter. Is this season clay within my hands? I plan, manage, and hope. Or am I recognizing how God could be the one shaping my life in this season and all seasons? We can plan all of the things in our lives, all of our liturgies, every tiny little detail that will make this season special, memorable, and moving. It is easy to believe ourselves to be masterful potters. Yet we will always be the clay. Our work, our ministries, our attentiveness and watchfulness are not done in vain. But we are not the potter. We are all the work of God’s hands. —ERN

December 6 /Second Sunday of Advent CO M F O RT SOU N DS SO LOV E LY, D O E SN’T I T? Ministry brings perpetual challenges, and finding ways to continue living out one’s vocation within the structures of the church can seem increasingly difficult. How many who work in the various corners of the church have encountered questions of why we would keep doing this? We perennially push to straighten winding paths while many look on or don’t see our work at all. The reasons to walk away are always there. How often does comfort come alongside those? Isaiah comes through with this offer of comfort to a weary people, of the Lord gathering the lambs in his arms. How many of

us, in all corners of the world, yearn to be held and comforted in this way? Will this be the moment when comfort finally comes? But one is coming who is mightier than we are. Whatever we encounter, whatever yearning we know, whatever good we do amidst the challenges, is only ever making way for one mightier than we will ever be. Our glories and our failures do not have to mean everything to us, nor do they have to be devoid of all meaning. Whatever comfort we may seek, we can find it in the one who is coming. We can take comfort that whatever paths our lives and our ministries make will still prepare the way of the Lord. —ERN

December 8 /Immaculate Conception I HAVE NOT COME FACE TO face with an angel (as far as I know), but I have come face to face with questions and invitations that left me dumbfounded and articulating many colorful versions of “How can this be?” Practicality kicks in, and the need to see what could be possible drives my energy and focus. In ministry we are asked to hold it all—openness to the movement of the Holy Spirit and also the planning and execution of all the things meant to keep us open. We have to hold the possible alongside the impossible while figuring out how to make everything possible for those to whom we minister.

What happens if we can hold onto our openness to the seemingly possible? What does it look like to risk a “yes” to God? While I may struggle to identify with Mary’s freedom from original sin, I can try to enter into her “How can this be?” from a place of wonder, not doubt. I can imagine what else can be, what might be possible with just one more “yes.” Gabriel invites Mary to imagine a different life for herself and for the world, to risk the impossible. As we live into these remaining weeks of Advent, may we see Mary’s example as an invitation to imagine what else could be. —ERN

December 13 /Third Sunday of Advent R EJ O I CE ! J OY F LOWS T H RO U G H A L L O F our readings today, even proclaiming Mary’s words of praise in the wake of the feast of the Immaculate Conception. Whatever may be happening in the world, in our parishes, in our lives, we are invited at this moment to pause and simply rejoice! Just as John did, we are invited to testify to the light, to proclaim the joy of God who is coming into the world to bring glad tidings to the poor. The joy is not thin or surface-level but that which comes out of bringing light to the darkness, hope to the despairing, freedom to those held captive in every way imaginable.

Joy is always an option. Every moment we read throughout Scripture came from a moment where there was reason to despair. There has always been and will always be reason to lose hope, to let go of joy and choose darkness. But the light that began as just one candle two weeks ago has grown and will continue to grow. Joy does not disregard the things in our lives that bring us sorrow, but it does remind us that the light still glows and that God can and will always be the joy of our souls. As long as the light remains, we will always have reason to rejoice. —ERN

December 20 /Fourth Sunday of Advent TOMORROW IS THE WINTER SOLSTICE, THE shortest day of the year. The darkest day of the year comes as our Advent wreaths are fully aglow. We have faithfully lit a new candle each week, as we do every year, knowing this darkest of days will come. We do not know what that may bring each year, but we light our candles in anticipation regardless. We wait in darkness for the light to come into the world. Whatever plans we set in motion weeks ago are coming to their conclusions as we live into what real life has actually turned out to be amidst our hopes and plans. Whatever plans

or expectations Mary had in her moment of “yes” will come to their fruition within circumstances over which she will have little control, as they have with many women before and after her. All our preparations—for Advent, for birth, for new life in all its forms—can take us only so far. We can prepare, wait, and watch with boundless faith, and yet it is never our preparations that will cause God to come into the world. In these final days, as we wait amidst our great plans and preparations, may we offer our openness to God, our “yes” to those things that, in the end, only God can do. —ERN

January 17 /Second Sunday in Ordinary Time A S A PA R E N T O F T H R E E , WA K I N G up to someone crying out in the middle of the night is quite normal. Whether day or night, it is a reflex to respond “What?” and then assess what the matter at hand really is. Is it important? Is there bleeding? Is this something I need to help them learn their way through? Do they simply need a moment of my love and attention? My patience in the moment is often what determines just how open I am to listening to the need and the call set before me. Calling out to someone is an act of disruption. It breaks their attention, bringing it to something new. God’s calling out to us

should disrupt us. It should awaken us from our sleep, rouse us from our complacency, and move us to a different posture of listening and attentiveness. It should shake us from what we already know and do. When we are able to hear, to respond with a listening heart, we should not go back to the way we were before. In this tender time coming out of Christmas and also heading quickly toward Lent, what is God calling us to now? As the light has disrupted the darkness, God will continue to move in and shift our lives around. Are we ready to listen? —ERN

January 24 /Third Sunday in Ordinary Time T H E D I S R U PT I O N O F G O D’S C A L L CO N T I N U E S ! This scene of everyday life can be easy to skim over. But if you pause to sit with it, it makes the moments of Jesus’s call to the disciples more striking. This was their daily life—the habits and rituals of throwing out their nets, over and over, to see what might come back. To take on the probably tedious but nonetheless critical task of mending nets so they might bring in an abundance for those fishing. This was the rhythm of their life. And then that rhythm changed entirely. What rhythms are we accustomed to? In our faith that is so

steeped in patterns and rituals that bring us great meaning and encounter, our rhythms are legion. They give us stability, community, and hope. But Jesus steps in to change our rhythms, to change our routines, and to invite us to a new way of life. We don’t have to leave it all behind, as our rhythms and habits are always a part of us. But how else can we use our nets? What else in front of us could use mending so as to offer us greater abundance in our lives? Our rhythms and rituals need not be entirely abandoned, but we can also use them in new ways as we see what else Jesus is inviting us to. —ERN

January 31 /Fourth Sunday in Ordinary Time M A R R I E D O R N OT, T H E R E S E E M S TO be plenty of things in the world to be anxious about. Looking ahead to the liturgical season of Lent might bring enough anxiety for anyone in a parish. The world is swirling with reasons to be anxious, many of them legitimately in need of our attention. There are great needs we need to respond to and injustices that will always need to be uprooted. There are so many needs, so many responses, so many ideas, so many opinions, so many sounds and noises competing to make their way to our hearts—how do we give God a chance to be among them?

Opening ourselves more courageously to how God speaks to us and the unclean spirits that dwell among us doesn’t mean we have to ignore the anxieties of the world. God can and does speak to those, too. God calls out to the unclean spirits among us, wanting to free us of those things that keep us anxious and hardened of heart. God wants to be the voice we hear most clearly among those clamoring to be heard. We have a noisy world that remains full of need and endless anxieties. Where do we make the space to hear God in a way that does not harden our hearts but instead might begin to heal them? —ERN

February 7 /Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time H OW D O W E H O L D T H IS L AST Sunday before Ash Wednesday arrives? Whether it’s planning for these weeks with our candidates and catechumens or all of the things we hope to offer those in our communities that might help them enter more deeply into this time, it can be too easy to mark time until Lent instead of remaining in the moment. Yes, our planning and preparations will be of service to those in our communities as we accompany them in a new season. How might we also not let this last ordinary-time Sunday pass us by? As Simon says to Jesus, “Everyone is looking for you.” Whether

it is the middle of Lent or a Sunday in ordinary time, we are all still looking for Jesus. Life will always carry forward, regardless of time or season. And in every time and place, we are still looking for Jesus—for his healing, his solace, and his words. How we seek out Jesus might shift and sharpen as we enter Lent, but it does not mean we have to wait until then. Jesus heals many people in today’s Gospel. For each person encountered there, it wasn’t ordinary time but the moment in which they were healed. Even in these last days, Jesus could still bring to us a more-than-extraordinary moment. —ERN
