ORANGE REGIONAL 2017 GOLF & TENNIS CLASSIC

On Monday, June 19th, the Orange Regional Medical Center Foundation held its 26th Annual Healey Brothers Golf & Tennis Classic at West Hills Country Club and The Golf Club at Mansion Ridge. This year, the Foundation raised $250,000 to benefit further hospital expansion. More than 275 golfers played at both courses in the 18-hole tournament and the 9-hole Par 3 clinic and mini tournament. Several tennis players enjoyed a tennis clinic and tournament.

Special thanks to our event sponsor, Healey Brothers. Congratulations to golfer and hospital physician Dr. Manuel DeCastro, who got a hole-in-one at The Golf Club at Mansion Ridge.

Volunteer Spotlight: Greg O’Gorman ORMC Executive Chef Greg O’Gorman has donated his time for the past two years to cook a gourmet meal for a lucky golf and tennis basket raffle winner at his or her home. Greg is a Culinary Institute of America-trained chef who oversees all hospital food operations, including the cafeteria, patient services, Chock full o’Nuts Café, the Outpatient Building’s Orange Eatery featuring Starbucks, and the Café at the Pavilion. Greg helps plan and implement the menus, as well as purchase the necessary food and equipment.

Greg enjoys the staff with whom he works, and loves the environment. As a CIAtrained chef, Greg values the power of nutrition and recognizes that food can, indeed, “help the healing process.”

“Our training allows us to adjust a recipe to reduce the salt and fat content to meet the health needs of our patients and staff, while also maintaining the flavor,” Greg said.

Greg supports the hospital because supporting his employer makes him feel like a part of the whole team.

Sponsor Spotlight: Healey Brothers The 26th Annual Healey Brothers Golf and Tennis Classic celebrated the exclusive event sponsorship of Healey Brothers. “We are so proud of Healey Brothers’ support of the Golf and Tennis Classic,” said committee member Ray VanVoorhis of Liscum McCormack VanVoorhis LLP. “Their partnership elevated the outing to a new level of exposure.”

Volunteer Spotlight: Jessica Gerlach Jessica Gerlach, ORMC’s Clinical Trials and Oncology Community Outreach manager, has been the volunteer lead for the Golf and Tennis Basket Raffle for several years. Annually, from January to June, Jessica and her committee, including the dedicated Carol Mills from the Diagnostic Imaging team, work tirelessly to secure donations for the now iconic basket raffles.

This year, she and her committee put together 11 baskets, each valued at over $500. The baskets were made up of gift certificates from local business partners. Jessica recruits volunteers to sell raffle tickets in the hospital from April to June, and annually raises over $16,000 through her efforts.

“Jessica is a great team member,” said Foundation President Bill Dauster. “She is creative and incredibly reliable, and we are so grateful to her and her committee for their enthusiasm and dedication.”

Jessica is dedicated to her community; she’s highly involved with her son’s Goshen Youth Lacrosse and Football clubs, as well as the local American Cancer Society.

PLANNED GIVING

Chairman’s Corner Jonathan Rouis, CPA I am often humbled by the outpouring of support for our hospital.

We have officially reached The Future is Orange campaign goal of $3.3 million in support of the North Campus Expansion Project, including a new outpatient building, the Spagnoli Family Cancer Center, an academic medicine endowment fund, The Fitness Trail, and a healing environment. Thank you to each and every person who supported the campaign.

Physician CME Event Over 150 physicians attended a workshop called Physician Practice Management Asset Protection Strategies: What Every Physician Needs to Know, presented by Richard J. Shapiro, J.D. of Blustein, Shapiro, Rich & Barone, LLP. The event, which provided dinner fare and continuing medical education credits to attendees, is part of an annual Provide & Protect education series sponsored by the Foundation.

Your contributions have helped construct what Solucient, a national health care data company, calls “the most beautiful hospital in America,” and we are just bursting with pride. Through your efforts – and a generous donation from the Guarino Family – we have established an academic medicine endowment fund to aid medical students, residents, and fellows in their learning and research for years to come. Every day, staff, families, and patients are walking and exercising to better health on The Fitness Trail that was funded by your generous gifts.

All in all, our hospital is a destination health care campus, beautiful, comforting and easy to traverse, now with two inspirational gardens, the Viewing Garden for infusion patients and, of course, the Lawrence T. Testa Healing Garden for quiet reflection. The growth of Orange Regional Medical Group means that more physicians will share our mission to serve the families of the region to provide “above and beyond health care in an impeccable healing environment.”

These are just some of the reasons that we still believe the Future is Orange!

Provide & Protect Seminar A spring workshop called Provide & Protect Your Family with Estate Planning was presented by Sarita Bhandarkar, Esq. of Glenn & Breheney and Austin DuBois, J.D. of Blustein, Shapiro, Rich & Barone, LLP at the West Hills Country Club. The event, attended by 45 people, offered tips and resources for building a financial future for generations.

Testa Healing Garden Party The Foundation Board of Trustees recently held a Legacy Society reception in the Testa Healing Garden on the ORMC campus. Over 70 people enjoyed the gardens in full bloom, locally sourced hors d’oeuvres prepared by Amuzae and Chef Shawn Hubbell, and the sounds of a live harpist.

The Testa Healing Garden was named for Larry Testa, a successful businessman and scientist. Larry Testa lived a full life, albeit much too short. He traveled to the far reaches of the world to develop and implement his patented invention, a special coating for acrylics that had a major impact on industry and society. Upon retirement, Larry chose to return to Middletown where he grew up.

When Larry became ill in 2011, he required several hospitalizations and chose Orange Regional Medical Center for his care. During that time, he endeared himself to the hospital staff with his personality and wit. Sadly, Larry succumbed to his illness on January 26, 2012. To ensure that others receive quality healthcare close to home, Larry Testa left a legacy gift to Orange Regional. In recognition of Larry’s benevolence, the hospital dedicated the Healing Garden in his memory.

 Jesse Wright, Vinnie Deluise, and Bobby Jones of the ORMC Grounds team celebrated the opening of The Fitness Trail.

Their commitment to and support of The Fitness Trail helped make this accomplishment possible.

On May 11th, 2017, the Orange Regional Medical Center Foundation had its ribbon-cutting event.

It was a gorgeous day to be outside. We had several healthy food trucks participate and many employees were walking around the trail.

The Fitness Trail is unique to our hospital; it complements our community by promoting health and wellness. It includes seven fitness stations, a yoga platform, and a walking trail. Instructors were present at the ribbon-cutting to explain and demonstrate the stations. The ORMC nursing staff rallied around this fundraising project by pledging personal gifts and hosting fundraising events. Their $40,000 contribution was vital to the launch of The Fitness Trail, which was part of The Future is Orange campaign, a $3.3 million campaign for the expansion of the hospital. The Fitness Trail is open any day from dusk to dawn.

Donor Spotlight: Orange County 10k The Orange County 10k Run is held annually in Middletown to benefit area non-profits. Annual Donor Reception The Orange Regional Medical Center Foundation held its Annual Donor Recognition in April at Villa Venezia to recognize the generosity of donors who have given to The Future is Orange campaign, 21st Century Club, or Legacy Society. The Foundation’s Board of Trustees honored three special philanthropists with its Leadership in Philanthropy award, as each went above and beyond for the hospital this past year.

Leadership Award recipients were: • enCourageKids Foundation, a generous supporter of the Pediatric Center; • John and Melanie Lanc, long-standing donors who have consistently and generously supported the Foundation’s campaigns and golf/tennis tournaments (read more in our Donor Spotlight box); and • Thomas Guarino, who established the Thomas V. Guarino Family Academic Medicine Fund because of his strong belief in research and education for medical students.

Among the highlights of the evening were activities funded by the 21st Century Club, including aromatherapy, the Art Cart, blanket warmer, virtual reality glasses, Reiki, Xbox, and 3D mammography.

The 21st Century Club supports areas of greatest need not otherwise supported by capital budgets, and provides resources to fund enhanced patient services.

Donor Spotlight: John & Melanie Lanc To those who know them best, John and Melanie Lanc are joyful world travelers. No doubt they warmed up their last long-distance destination, Antarctica. The Lancs are members of the Foundation’s Legacy Society and have been donors to each of its major campaigns, most recently The Future is Orange campaign. Not only are they donors to the Foundation’s annual Century campaign, but John’s local engineering and survey firm, Lanc & Tully, has also donated to the Foundation’s golf tournament for many years.

Melanie has also consistently donated her time as a member of the ORMC Auxiliary, which supports the Foundation every day with its members’ time and treasure.

Campaign Celebration On Thursday, July 13th the community celebrated the completion of The Future is Orange campaign, a $3.3 million initiative to fund the expansion of the hospital, including the Cancer Center, Outpatient Building, Fitness Trail, and Viewing Garden. The campaign also established an Academic Medicine Endowment Fund. Donors and employees toasted the success of the campaign at Goshen’s Stagecoach Inn.

The gift has been designated to support the Pediatric Center.

NURSES WEEK HEALTHY SNACK CART ORMC celebrated National Nurses Week in May. Community friends Price Chopper of Newburgh, Shop Rite of Newburgh, Adams of Newburgh, Medora Snacks, and Pepsi of the Hudson Valley donated products to celebrate ORMC’s nursing staff.
