The 7th Annual Korn’s Campground Horseshoe Tournament event committee and representatives from the Town of Wallkill presented a $2,100 check to support the ORMC Foundation’s Future is Orange Campaign. The event was held in October 2016, and was in memory of Mike and Joyce Korn, previous owners of Korn’s Campgrounds, who both passed away within the last two years. “We chose ORMC because the hospital was great to Mike and Joyce and the hospital was in their community,” said tournament founder Patrick R. Dineen. “Mike and Joyce cared a lot about their local community and we know they would like to see the money go somewhere that is helping the growth and health of the people around them.”

Skanska, the ORMC’s building partner for the new North Campus Expansion Project, made a gift to support The Future is Orange Campaign. Theodora Diamantis, Skanska’s project executive, presented the gift to Steve Sugrue, ORMC’s vice president of Compliance, Real Estate and Audit, and Bill Dauster, ORMC’s foundation president.



You really have us off to a great start this year!

At our first Board of Trustees meeting of 2017, we approved funding for expanded Reiki Training, a virtual reality head set, blanket warmers for radiation oncology patients, a program subscription for pain management programs for adults and children, and underwriting for symposium on bullying and incivility, a mandatory in-service for leadership.

We also established a $500,000 academic medicine endowment program for our growing graduate medical education program. You can read about the generosity of Tom Guarino, who helped make that fund a reality, in this newsletter. The effort is just one of the many additions made to advance our hospital as part of The Future Is Orange Campaign. As I write this, our $3.3 million campaign has just under $50,000 to raise to reach its goal. I know that there are donors yet to participate who want to help us to the finish line. We are planning a wonderful year for you, starting with our Donor Reception at Villa Venezia on April 13, where we honor community leaders Thomas V. Guarino, Melanie and John Lanc, and the enCourage Kids Foundation. The 2017 Golf & Tennis Classic on June 19 will truly be an event for everyone, including those who play tennis, those who are looking for a tennis and/or golf clinic, and those who just want to mingle and come for dinner. For the true golfers, this year’s courses at West Hills and Mansion Ridge will be a day you will not want to miss.

On April 27 at West Hills we will be hosting a lecture on wills and bequests with respected leaders in our community as the speakers.

The Kiwanis K Kids Otisville Elementary School delivered toys to the Pediatric Center this holiday. K-Kids are sponsored by the Minisink Valley Kiwanis Club.



After seeing sick children on the television, 10-year-old Liana Maldonado of Monroe asked her mother to get toys for the sick kids at ORMC instead of buying her toys for Christmas.



GRATEFUL PATIENT PROFILE: Scott and Alison Kendrick of Monroe have a lot of friends and family who have traveled to Manhattan when they needed health care.

“We know a lot of people who made that journey, for all kinds of surgeries and even to have a baby,” said Scott. “It’s always during the worst of times, too.”

When it came time for Alison to deliver the couple’s first baby, the Kendricks made a different decision.

“I have been active on the hospital’s Foundation Board of Trustees for a few years now and have had the opportunity to get to know the doctors and staff and experience the beautiful facility many times,” Scott said. “I’ve known for a while this was a special place. They really have it together when it comes to the whole patient experience.”

“Our special time was made even more special by the caring attention of staff,” said Alison. “Their focus on every detail, including education for our discharge, was just incredible. I will always remember them ringing those Brahm’s Lullaby bells throughout the hospital when Kinsley was born… such a wonderful experience!”

Scott is the resident director of Merrill Lynch in Middletown, N.Y. and a senior partner of the Collesano-Kendrick Wealth Management Group of Merrill Lynch in Montvale, N.J. and Middletown, N.Y. Before Scott joined Merrill Lynch, the Chicago Cubs Baseball Organization selected Scott as a pitcher in the 7th round of the amateur draft. After completing a successful career as a starting pitcher, he joined Merrill Lynch in 2000. He is a member of the Executive Committee of the ORMC Foundation.

TOM GUARINO’S GIFT WILL IMPACT MEDICAL RESEARCH & THE REGION’S QUALITY OF LIFE Tom Guarino believes that education is at the core of everything in America, from an individual’s ability to rise from poverty to a community’s quality of life. That’s why he is supporting educational advancements in medicine right here in Orange County.

With Tom’s lead gift to establish the $500,000 Thomas V. Guarino Family Academic Medicine Fund, medical students and residents in the Orange Regional Medical Center Medical Education Program will be able to conduct leading-edge research.

The hospital’s program has grown steadily over the last several years, particularly since Touro School of Osteopathic Medicine opened nearby in the old Horton Medical Center campus.

“I was really impressed with the growth of this program at ORMC and how it will impact our area,” said Mr. Guarino. “There is a statistic that I hope will come true, that approximately 25 percent of graduates will open a practice locally. We really need that here in our growing community, but also in Sullivan County.”

In its partnership with Touro, the Hospital accepts 3rd- and 4th-year medical students with approved residency programs in family medicine (2014), psychiatry, traditional rotating internship, emergency medicine (2015), and surgery and internal medicine (2016). The number of students and residents will grow each year, with a cap in the 2020-2021 year. Studies and practical experience aside, students and residents also conduct research as part of their program.

Previous to the establishment of the fund, funding for conferences and research support was extremely thin.

“The impact of this fund is so enormous, not only to our program, but to the health of this entire region,” said Dr. Ronald Israelski, medical education director. “Both our students and our doctors will have resources to fund their important work. We are just so very grateful for this support.”

Dr. Israelski said that the impact will be felt in Orange and Sullivan counties as more physicians stay local, particularly in those areas with a critically low number of physicians. He said the only way to really impact Sullivan’s appearance at the bottom of the state’s health disparity list is to place more physicians there.

“Growing the fund is key so that more research can be done,” Dr. Israelski said. The fund will be accepting charitable gifts from companies, foundations, and individuals interested in playing an important role in the region’s health.

This list represents memorial/tribute gifts from January 1, 2016 through December 31, 2016. These donors have chosen to honor a family member or friend, mark a special occasion, remember a loved one, or thank a dedicated caregiver with a tribute gift. Their gifts will be used to meet the hospital’s most pressing needs, or in some cases, have been directed to the specialty or program of the donor’s choice.
