An award-winning newsletter for Orange Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers
From The President & CEO I’m proud to share that we continue to receive some of the most prestigious awards for patient safety and superior patient outcomes from Healthgrades, including being one of America's 100 Best Hospitals for Coronary Intervention™ for two years in a row (2017, 2018), as well as the recipient of Healthgrades 2018 Patient Safety Excellence Award™ for the second consecutive year. We are the only hospital in New York State to earn back to back annual Patient Safety Excellence recognition. Orange Regional’s Peter Frommer, MD Heart Center racked up significant honors as it was also named among the Top 5% in the Nation for Coronary Interventional Procedures two years in a row (2017, 2018) as well as receiving five-stars for Coronary Interventional Procedures for two years in a row (2017, 2018). Added to this are five-star recognitions for Pace Maker Procedures and Treatment for Heart Attack for 2018. Surgical Services ranked among the top 10% in the nation for General Surgery by Healthgrades, earned the General Surgery Excellence Award and received five stars for Gallbladder Removal Surgery. Additionally, we received five stars for treatment of Pneumonia.
The Rowley Family Birthing Center was recognized with five stars for natural childbirth and C-section procedures. Our Bariatric Surgery program was recognized with the Bariatric Surgery Excellence Award and named Orange Regional among the top 10% of hospitals for Bariatric Surgery. Healthgrades continued to honor us for Superior Performance in Bariatric Surgery and we received five stars for Overall Bariatric Surgery, four years in a row (2015-2018). We are making great strides in the quality of care we provide to our community. This success requires teamwork and strong communication with each other and with our patients. Research shows a direct link between communication and improved patient satisfaction, quality outcomes and patient safety. RELATE training helps to reinforce how we communicate and can be a key component in the delivery of exceptional patient care. I’d like to thank everyone who recently met with Baldrige Surveyors. We hope to hear from Baldrige soon with the formal results of their visit. I hope everyone is enjoying the final weeks of their summer. I wish you and your families a safe and healthy return to school. Sincerely,
Scott Batulis, President & CEO
Orange Regional Recognized For Commitment To Quality Stroke Care Orange Regional received the American Heart Association/American Stroke Association’s Get With The Guidelines®-Stroke Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award, and Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite. The award recognizes the hospital’s commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence. Our Hospital earned this award by meeting specific quality achievement measures for the diagnosis and treatment of stroke patients. This included evaluation of the proper use of medications and other stroke treatments aligned with the most up-to-date, evidence-based guidelines, all toward the goal of improving recovery time and reducing the risk of death and disability for stroke patients. Foundation Update
W.T. Liddy Center Helps Increase Empathetic Communication An anonymous donor has created a fund to address caregiver-patient communication through the W.T. Liddy Center. The Center works to improve patient satisfaction through communication training for caregivers. So far, money was designated to send 12 physicians and medical students to the 9th Annual Patient Experience: Empathy + Innovation Summit. The summit took place from June 18 to 20, 2018 at the Cleveland Convention Center in Cleveland, Ohio. It brought together patient experience leaders, healthcare CEOs, innovators, nursing leaders, policy makers, major stakeholders, industry experts and patients. The theme of this year’s three-day, inter-professional conference was “Empathy Where You Are” and featured expert speakers, who engaged in exploring innovative ways to demonstrate empathy and provide value to patients and caregivers throughout their journey of care. Attendees heard how organizations around the world strive to deliver the best clinical, physical and emotional experience to patients and families.
When our group returned to ORMC, it created an Empathy Task Force to address patient experience. WT Liddy Center Co-chairs are Ann Yacone DiAgostino, RN and Ulrick Vieux, DO. Conference attendee, Maureen Donnelly, RN said “We look forward to working together to create sustainable positive change at ORMC.” The Empathy Task Force will be presenting at Grand Rounds on September 13 in the Conference Center. If you would like to attend or make a donation, contact the Foundation at 333-2333 or foundation@ghvhs.org.
Featured topics included: Access, Care Technology and Innovation, Communication, Continuous Improvement and Engagement. “The conference not only taught me new concepts and techniques, it inspired me to do better,” said attendee and Medical Resident, Suhal Shah.
“Pennies For Peds” Fundraiser Continues After hearing plans for the new Pediatric Center, and the “Pennies for Peds” fundraiser, back in 2013, Environmental Services employee, Patricia Jerido, was very excited. She had worked in the Emergency Department at various times in her tenure at Orange Regional and recalled, “I saw with my own eyes that it can be a very scary place for a child. Every community needs a Pediatric friendly hospital.” Patricia creatively raised money for the new Pediatric Center through the collection of pennies, nickels and dimes. She decorated two empty candy jars with colorful diaper pins, teddy bears, pennies and toys. A friend from the Maintenance Department drilled a hole in the top of each can for the coins and dollar bills to slide through. The finished product was two beautifully decorated coin collection jars. L to R – Foundation President, Bill Dauster, and Environmental Services employee, Patricia Jerido.
Patricia placed the jars in various locations throughout the Hospital and set a goal of raising $1,000. Today, the jars reside in the Chock Full of Nuts Coffee Shop and the 5 West Nurses station. As of June 2018, the total amount of funds raised was $ 8,784.32. Thank you Patricia!
