COVID-19 Safety Reminder: Protect Yourself and Others

With the increasing number of positive COVID-19 cases in our area, as well as the rapidly increasing number of positive patients in our hospitals, Garnet Health is once again tightening infection-prevention regulations, resuming past practices and developing various new protocols to keep everyone as safe as possible.

As you have in the past, please work together to remind each other, patients and visitors to follow the guidelines established for their safety and the safety of their families and friends.

Although many people in our community are vaccinated, there is still a significant percentage of employees and community members who are not and are very susceptible to COVID-19. And even though you may be vaccinated, the new Delta variant of COVID-19 is known to be carried by, or infect vaccinated individuals.

Please manage your inner circle outside of work and remember that the new variant of COVID-19 spreads more easily and rapidly. Remember the basic precautions: hand hygiene, masks and social distancing.

• Please don’t come to work if you’re feeling sick,

especially if you’ve had contact with ill people outside of work. Garnet Health employees who experience COVID-19 symptoms (fever, cough, sore throat, runny or stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills, shortness of breath, loss of taste or smell, diarrhea or fatigue) should contact their manager, do not report to work and call the Occupational Health Staff Medical Evaluation line at 333-2066.

• We are seeing increased staff and patient exposures in Garnet Health facilities due to lack of compliance with masking. As a reminder, masks are required by

all staff in both clinical and non-clinical settings and must be worn properly, fully covering your nose and mouth.

• You must wear a mask when you enter any Garnet

Heath building. Masks are available at all entrances.

Failure to comply with Garnet Health masking requirements may result in disciplinary action.

• All staff working in clinical areas with direct patient contact must wear approved Garnet Health-issued eye protection at all times when within six feet of another person.

• Maintain social distance in cafeterias and break rooms.

• In-person meetings cannot exceed the 50% capacity limit of the room in which the meeting is held (no exceptions).

• All in-person meetings must offer a WebEx or dial-in option to facilitate adherence to the 50% capacity limit and allow a virtual option to the unvaccinated or those uncomfortable with attending meetings in person.

• No food or drink is allowed during in-person meetings.

• We will be mandating vaccination (no testing option) for all volunteers.

• Please get vaccinated if you haven’t already. It’s safe

and effective. Garnet Health Doctors is administering COVID-19 vaccinations at many of their convenient locations. Please share the vaccine open scheduling link (https://www.garnethealth.org/coronavirus) with your family and friends as we all work together to help end this pandemic.

Providing Preventive Care to the Community: At the Farmers’ Market As part of its continued community outreach, Garnet Health’s Community Health and Graduate Medical Education Departments have partnered with local farmers’ markets this summer to promote health and wellness.

“They also create an opportunity for healthcare access and incentivize healthier eating habits in the extended community.”

The partnership delivers prevention services in community settings at several locations in Orange and Sullivan counties, including Harris, Liberty, Middletown and Monticello. It aims to address several health conditions identified in the counties’ Community Health Needs Assessments such as obesity, diabetes and food insecurities and improve patient outcomes.

At each market, our team of health educators and medical residents provides shoppers with free nutrition information, health screenings and family-oriented wellness activities. The team also provides seasonal recipes, nutrition tips and blood pressure screenings as they help to create a bridge between primary care and healthy food access in the community.

Look Who’s Leading Tom Anderson has been promoted to Director of Supply Chain Management and Distribution for Garnet Health. In his new role, Tom focuses on increasing the timeliness and quality response of clinical inventory requests, and refines inventory processes and procedures to maximize customer service, increase assets and reduce costs.

Tom’s experience in project management and his leadership helped secure necessary personal protective equipment during the height of the pandemic for clinical and non-clinical staff. Additionally, Tom was instrumental in the successful relocation of the Outpatient Physical and Occupational Therapy Department. Tom can be reached at tanderson@garnethealth.org.

Leroy Cordero Floyd III, MD has been appointed Vice President of the Medical Staff for Garnet Health Medical Center. He holds a number of leadership positions within the organization, including Garnet Health Medical Center Vice Chair of the Department of Medicine, which incorporates all disciplines of internal medicine, including specialties and subspecialties certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine. We congratulate Dr. Floyd on his new appointment.

John Marino has been promoted to Director of Project Management for Garnet Health. In his new role, John is expanding the project management team, supporting strategic projects and helping the organization adopt project management principles.

Most recently, John’s leadership as Furniture, Fixture and Equipment Manager helped to drive the successful completion and opening of our Garnet Health Doctors’ Goshen office.

Nurses Share Research on Food Insecurity at International Conference

Thanks to funding and support provided by the Garnet Health Foundation, Garnet Health Medical Center’s four Interdisciplinary Shared Governance Committees developed and presented the “It Takes a Village to Put Food in the Bank: Changing Food Insecurity in our Community One Patient at a Time” presentation at Sigma Theta Tau’s 32nd International Nursing Research Congress in Singapore virtually.

Food insecurity is defined as “the disruption of food intake or eating patterns due to lack of money and other resources and the inability to obtain nutritional food by socially acceptable means (including financial constraints).”

Food insecurity is a growing global public health problem, and one in four homes suffer with limited

food availability. It stimulates negative health effects such as malnutrition, mental disorders like depression and anxiety and worsening chronic diseases, for example. The Shared Governance, Research/Evidence Based Practice, Project Management and Nursing Innovation Committees, along with the Information Technology Department, united to enlighten the awareness for food insecurity and take action against it.

The interdisciplinary team that presented at the Nursing Research Conference included Beth Post, Christopher Costello, Dionne Johnson, Ebony Samuel-Bakpessi, Magon T. Moncrieffe, Nicole Sewell, Sadhana Subramanian and Sharon Geidel.

Full Primary Stroke Care Certification from DNV Garnet Health Medical Center has received full certification from Det Norske Veritas (DNV) as a Primary Stroke Center.

The DNV Primary Stroke Center Certification affirms that Garnet Health Medical Center addresses the full spectrum of stroke care – diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and education – and establishes clear metrics to evaluate outcomes.

Garnet Health Medical Center is one of only two stroke centers in Orange County designated by the New York State Department of Health. It received the Healthgrades 2020 Stroke Care Excellence Award™, was named Among the Top 10% in the Nation for Treatment of Stroke in 2020 and is a Five-Star Recipient for Treatment of Stroke for two years in a row (2019-2020).

Be Cyber Secure

Protect Garnet Health and Protect Yourself In the cyber world, phishing is when you get emails, texts or calls from companies or people you don’t know. These emails are mostly from scammers who want you to click on a link, download an attachment or give personal information (like a password) so they can steal money, your identity, infect your computer with a virus or even take over control of your computer and demand payment to release it (a process known as ransomware). Although Garnet Health’s Information Technology (IT) team provides extensive protections for our computers and networks, it also relies on employees to be the first line of defense.

Tips to avoid an attack 1. DO NOT click on links from senders you do not recognize. Be especially wary of .zip or other compressed or executable (.exe) file types.

2. D O NOT provide personal information, such as usernames and passwords, over email or on the phone, even if the email looks legitimate or the caller is persuasive and friendly.

3. W ATCH for clues in emails, i.e. suspicious or misleading email addresses, misspellings or bad grammar. Sophisticated scammers can make illegitimate emails from companies and even people you know look very real.

4. T ake CAUTION when opening attachments or clicking links in emails that contain warning banners indicating they originated from external sources. If you click on a link or attachment and are locked out of your computer, shut it down immediately and notify IT by calling the Help Desk at ext. 2020. If you question whether an email or phone call is legitimate, contact the Help Desk.
