Highlights from the Garnet Health Foundation - Catskills Golf Classic On July 14, Garnet Health Foundation - Catskills held its annual Golf Classic, raising over $80K to benefit 3D mammography services. The event hosted 117 golfers at the Villa Roma Resort in Callicoon. Special thanks to all sponsors, participants and volunteers. Quality and Patient Safety Corner Meet Your Infection Prevention Team!

The Garnet Health Infection Prevention Department consists of four Infection Preventionists, one Epidemiology Informatics Analyst and one System Epidemiologist.

• Our four Infection Preventionists, Tara Batson, Sarah Berger, Jacqulynn Carroll and Susan Thirkield, have a collective 50 years of nursing experience across various acute care settings.

Jacqulynn and Susan are both certified in Infection Control and Epidemiology. In the future, both Sarah and Tara will strive to achieve their certification after obtaining required experience.

Epidemiology Informatics Analyst, recently acquired her Master’s in Public Health, bringing expertise in epidemiology and biostatistics to the department.

• Additionally, our team has the incredible resource of Dr. Jodi Galaydick, who serves as our System Epidemiologist, providing a plethora of knowledge and clinical experience by drawing on her dual specializations in Critical Care and Infectious Diseases.

The Infection Prevention Department provides support to the healthcare system in various ways, including subject-matter expertise and education, surveillance of infectious diseases, communication of potential emerging pathogenic threats and much more. The Infection Prevention team would like all staff and patients to view us as partners in nurturing an incredible place to work and the safest place to obtain healthcare. Tasheka Lassiter

Congratulations to security guard Tasheka Lassiter, our May 2021 Employee of the Month at Garnet Health Medical Center - Catskills. Tasheka went above and beyond her call of duty when helping a visitor in a time of need. We are thrilled to celebrate and honor her for the exemplary compassion and empathy she presented in a stressful situation. Thank you, Tasheka. You are amazing!

Congratulations Chris Stimpson, Garnet Health Medical Center Director of Operations for Behavioral Health Services, Dr. Alison Sullivan, Garnet Health Doctors, and Dr. Shajuiddin Mohammed, Garnet Health Doctors, recently participated in Vision Hudson Valley’s 2021 Quality Communities Conference with an informative discussion about mental health services available to our community. Way to go, team!

Thank You for Your Service On June 9 and 10, we celebrated our time with, and said farewell to, Rolland “Boomer” Bojo, Vice President, Garnet Health Medical Center - Catskills, Grover M. Hermann Division and Special Projects and former Chief Nursing Officer and Vice President of Patient Services at Garnet Health Medical Center - Catskills.

Boomer is now President and Chief Executive Officer of Delaware Valley Hospital, where he began his career as a licensed practical nurse in 1995.

For eight years, Boomer served our Harris and Callicoon campuses as Chief Nursing Officer. His energy, knowledge and clinical acumen were relied upon by many in our organization to help ensure we provided excellent clinical care to our community.

In his tenure, Boomer helped Grover M. Hermann Hospital gain honors as a Top Critical Care Access Hospital for Quality and Patient Satisfaction for eight consecutive years and was also influential in helping to establish our nursing shared governance at Garnet Health Medical Center - Catskills.

We thank you for 18 years of service, Boomer, and wish you good luck in your new position.

Residency Program Graduates Cheers to the graduates of our 2021 Medical Residency Programs, which include Transitional Year Internship, Internal Medicine Residency, Family Medicine Residency, Emergency Medicine Residency, General Surgery Residency and Psychiatry Residency. The mission of the Graduate and Undergraduate Medical Education Program at Garnet Health is to prepare residents and students to be excellent physicians and well-developed individuals. Thank you to our program directors, fellow providers and staff members who take time to teach, coach and help our residents hone their skills.

Who is a Resident?

In medicine, a resident is a physician who has finished medical school and is receiving training in a specialized area, such as surgery, internal medicine, pathology or radiology. Board certification in all medical and surgical specialties requires the satisfactory completion of a residency program and successful completion of a specialty board examination.

Pulmonary Rehab Patients Reach New Heights Thanks to the generosity of Garnet Health Foundation, Garnet Health Medical Center’s Pulmonary Rehabilitation Program now offers a wearable, non-invasive open ventilation (NIOV) system for patients to use during Pulmonary Rehabilitation sessions. Patients like Alex Klein, pictured with Elyse Carroll, Manager, Pulmonary Rehabilitation, can increase their tolerance to treadmill work from a few minutes with rest breaks to nonstop walking for 30 minutes or more. The ventilation system is designed to enhance exercise capacity and increase mobility for patients in their home and community. For patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), an increase in exercise tolerance and ability to perform activities of daily living can mean an improved quality of life.

A Super-Special Ceremony Not many people can say they received their high school diploma while undergoing treatment in a hospital, but thanks to our awesome staff and a really cool principal, we made a young patient’s graduation ceremony super special.

Brendan Colas graduated from Pine Bush High School but was unable to attend the ceremony due to his care.

However, he was surprised by his family in the hospital lobby. They proudly sported matching graduation T-shirts and held up a congratulatory banner. After providing Brendan a cap and gown, Pine Bush High School Principal Aaron Hopmayer presented him with his diploma.

Congratulations, Brendan! And to our staff, many, many thanks for creating such a memorable milestone!

Heroes Appreciation Day Parade On July 3, Garnet Health employees joined the Heroes Appreciation Day Parade in the Village of Goshen.

The parade was hosted by Illuminate Goshen and Orange County Government and honored veterans, first responders and essential workers.

Other Heroes Appreciation Day activities included a 5K run/walk, a Children’s Fun Run and an Open-Air Market on the Village Green.

Stories Along the Seams – How We Survived the Pandemic Share your COVID-19 Story and Listen to Others As part of Garnet Health Schwartz Rounds for Compassionate Healthcare, all are invited to share professional and personal stories about their COVID-19 experiences. Garnet Health is incredibly proud of every single employee. Our entire team worked hard and supported each other during this challenging pandemic.

This is a new and exciting initiative, and as with all Schwartz Rounds goals, it is about sharing your stories with and caring for each other. The goal is to provide a forum to openly embrace the importance of the emotional and social aspects of working in healthcare and living through a pandemic.

National Cancer Survivors Day On June 6, Garnet Health staff celebrated National Cancer Survivors Day, recognizing cancer survivors and supporters from across the globe to celebrate life and raise awareness of the issues of cancer survivorship. We commend our survivors for their strength and courage. Our annual Survivors Day Picnic will be held on September 19. Stay tuned for more details.

Garnet Health Celebrates Pride Month On June 24, Garnet Health staff gathered to celebrate diversity and inclusion and show support for the LGBTQ+ community. As it was also Pride Day, supporters enjoyed delicious rainbow cupcakes. Save the Dates The Garnet Health Foundation Healey Brothers 30th Annual Golf & Tennis Classic September 27, 2021 Enjoy a fantastic setting and help advance life-saving care by participating in Garnet Health Foundation’s Healey Brothers 30th Annual Golf & Tennis Classic.

The event is designed to provide an exceptional player experience in a COVID-safe environment. Proceeds will benefit the Every Minute Counts Campaign to renovate and expand the Hospital’s Emergency Department. The event will be held simultaneously at two premier locations on Monday, September 27.

Golfers will play a “scramble” format at West Hills Country Club in Middletown or the Golf Club at Mansion Ridge in Monroe. The tennis clinic and classic will be held at West Hills, as will a social hour and dinner.
