CONNECTIONS June 2019

An award-winning newsletter for Orange Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers

From The President & CEO Orange Regional is continually transforming into a remarkable teaching hospital through our Graduate Medical Education Program. We are proud to offer accredited residency programs in Emergency Medicine, Family Medicine, General Surgery, Internal Medicine, Psychiatry and Transitional Year Internship. On June 21, 2019, we graduated 32 Residents. We had the first graduating class for Emergency Medicine, Internal Medicine and Psychiatry, as well as graduates from Family Medicine and Transitional Year. Congratulations to all the graduates. Special congratulations are extended to Dr. Alicia Olowu, Dr. Joshua Layher and Dr. Eric Jarmon, who will be joining our Medical Group in July. Our transformation continues with the formal announcement of our Level II Trauma designation from the American College of Surgeons. We have been working toward becoming a Level II Trauma Center for the past seven years and it has been a challenging journey. My sincere thanks to Dr. Mohammad Siddiqui, Trauma Program and Acute Care Surgery Medical Director; Greg Geisler, Trauma Administrator and all our physicians and staff for their hard work to make this program a great success! Trauma is a complicated, life-saving program requiring highly specialized physicians and staff who provide specialized medical services and resources to patients suffering from traumatic injuries. In 2018, we treated over 2,500 patients in our Trauma Program. The most common causes of injury that bring patients to trauma centers are falls, motor vehicle crashes and gunshot wounds. These events cause life-threatening injuries in multiple areas of the body and treatment at trauma centers has been scientifically proven to reduce the likelihood of death or permanent disability to injured patients. Our Level II Trauma designation means patients, and their families, who require highly specialized care due to tragic events, have a likelier chance of being cared for at our hospital instead of being transferred to other facilities farther away. The American Heart Association/American Stroke Association has once again recognized Orange Regional for our outstanding stroke care. This year’s designation, Stroke Gold Plus & Target: Stroke Honor Roll Elite PLUS Award, is more notable than our previous years’ honors. Our ability to meet specific quality measures and our commitment to ensuring stroke patients receive the most appropriate treatment according to nationally recognized, research-based guidelines based on the latest scientific evidence has earned us a more prestigious recognition. The care of stroke patients is one of the most important services we provide to our community. I'm very impressed with the high level of excellence we have achieved and congratulate you all on a job well done! I wish everyone a safe and healthy summer. Sincerely,

Scott Batulis, President & CEO

Our latest recipient of the BEE (Be Exceptional Everyday) Award was Jennifer Krause. Jennifer is a Surgical Services Assistant who goes above and beyond for patients and their families on a daily basis. The Orange Regional Rewards and Recognition Committee started the BEE program as a way to honor our employees, who are exceptional every day and go above and beyond their expected role in providing service. Each month, the Committee reviews nominations received and presents one BEE award to an exceptional staff member. The nominations of all recipients throughout the year are then reviewed by the Committee and one recipient is named as BEE of the Year. To make a nomination, email BEEAward@ghvhs.org.

Medical Group Launches Measles Prevention Program MEASL

ES 101

Need a Booster? Am I at Risk?

well & worried

Overwhelmed and unsure of measles news and warnings? Trying to make sense of measles can leave you unsure about how to protect yourself and your family. Catskill Regional Medical Group and Orange Regional Medical Group understand your concern, and created a Measles Prevention Program for people just like you. Our team is here to give you the straight facts about measles. We will explore your medical history – including vaccination records – to see if a previous MMR vaccination is still effective. If needed, we will administer vaccinations or boosters. Please note, a co-pay or fee may apply. So, for adults who are “well, but worried” our Measles Prevention Program provides you with the knowledge needed to protect yourself and your loved ones.

This program is for adults 18+. If you think you are experiencing symptoms of measles - please contact your primary care doctor or go to the emergency room.

We want to inform you of the Medical Group’s Measles Prevention Program that will kick off in two locations: ORMG – Outpatient Building in Middletown on June 28 and CRMG – Urgent Care in Monticello on July 11. Please share this important information with your patients and loved ones. Highlights:

• The program is for Adults 18+ who are “well and worried” (no active symptoms). Those who have active symptoms are to contact their primary care physician (PCP) or go to the Emergency Department.

• “Well and worried” who are established with CRMG/ORMG Primary Care should make arrangements with their doctor to discuss their concerns.

• All employees of Greater Hudson Valley Health System – Hospitals and Medical Group – who are “well and worried”, please contact employee health at 333-2060 to review your concerns.

• Those who are immunocompromised and pregnant are not appropriate for this program. Please email Dr. Keller at mkeller@ghvhs.org if you need to refer a patient with special circumstances.

What does a Culture of Safety Have to do With Being a High Reliability Organization? High reliability organizations maintain a commitment to safety at all levels, from frontline providers to managers and executives. This commitment establishes a "culture of safety" that encompasses the following:

• Acknowledgment of the high-risk nature of an organization's activities and the determination to achieve consistently safe operations.

• A blame-free environment where individuals are able to report errors or near misses without fear of reprimand or punishment.

• Encouragement of collaboration across ranks and disciplines to seek solutions to patient safety problems. • Organizational commitment of resources to address safety concerns. Improving the culture of safety within healthcare is an essential component of preventing or reducing errors and improving overall healthcare quality. Our Culture of Safety survey provides units and the organization with critical information about attitudes and perspectives on safety culture. These results can help teams understand ways in which they can improve patient safety throughout the organization. The survey is intended to:

• Raise staff awareness about patient safety. • Diagnose and assess the current status of patient safety culture. • Identify strengths and areas for patient safety culture improvement. • Examine how trends in patient safety culture change over time. • Evaluate the cultural impact of patient safety initiatives and interventions. • Conduct internal and external comparisons. For more information on Culture of Safety or the survey, contact Quality Data Specialist, Katie Haun at 333-1294 or khaun@ghvhs.org. 4

Security Reminder: How to Report Suspicious Activity End of Flu Season

Public safety is everyone's responsibility. If you see suspicious activity, report it to Security ASAP. Describe specifically what you observed, including:

• Who or what you saw • When you saw it • Where it occurred • Why it's suspicious

Hospital doors are open and the public is welcome, so it should be a best practice for all individuals working or visiting the facility to keep an eye out for suspicious behavior. This can include abandoned vehicles, unauthorized individuals in restricted areas, strange packages left on site or even unusual odors. Also, be sure to highlight important contact phone numbers, including security and hospital management, someplace visible within your department.

Mental Health First Aid Training Orange Regional Medical Center hosted a mental health first aid training class on May 20. Members of our Community Health Department, Behavioral Health Services Department and Orange County Department of Mental Health’s, Tammy Rhein, Director of Chemical Dependency Program and Adult Mental Health, Behavioral Health Services Department facilitated the training.
