Update for Catskill Regional Medical Center employees, physicians and volunteers
November/December 2018
A Message From Our Leader On behalf of President and Chief Executive Officer for the Greater Hudson Valley Health System, Scott Batulis, I am proud to announce that the Greater Hudson Valley Health System has approved a new name for the system, which is the corporate parent of Catskill Regional Medical Center, Orange Regional Medical Center, Catskill Regional Medical Group, Orange Regional Medical Group and the Orange Regional Medical Center Foundation. The new system name is Garnet Health. You may ask ‘why the new name’ and ‘how was Garnet Health chosen’? As a growing health care system and expanding medical group, we need a name that is simple and easy to explain to our patients and our community. The name was chosen after an extensive process conducted by the branding experts at Jonathan Schiller Interbrand Health, in conjunction with our Marketing team, hospital and medical group leadership and the Board of Directors. Interbrand is a world-wide company that has developed many well-known national and international brands. To understand our brand objectives, Interbrand visited our locations, held interviews with leaders and reviewed competitor brands. They discovered that above all, we are a health system that is inspired to go above and beyond to achieve excellence. Interbrand developed a list of over 424 potential names. Then, Interbrand researched if there were any identical and phonetic equivalents, negative language or cultural associations, or other misleading connotations. Ultimately, eight legally reviewed names emerged, which were then discussed at the leadership and Board level. We looked at whether the name supports our future goals; whether it was thought-provoking, memorable and relatable; and whether it would be easy to implement in a way that meets the needs of all stakeholders. Finally one name emerged – Garnet Health. Garnet, the New York State gemstone, suggests quality, leadership, and healing. The implementation of the name change will require significant planning and will be implemented over time. We have to decide what the change will mean for our hospitals and medical group, and how we will express the new name. This includes developing a logo and graphic elements, as well as creating guidelines on how we’ll use the brand. We are an organization that has embraced change over time and I hope you will join me in supporting this important change. The care we provide to our patients always comes first and Garnet Health will quickly become a name associated with excellence. My sincere thanks to all employees, physicians and volunteers for all of their efforts in making 2018 a great year. Please have a peaceful New Year. Sincerely, Jonathan Schiller, CEO

What is a Hospitalist? Hospitalists are Board-certified internists who devote their practice to the care of hospitalized patients. These dedicated physicians care for patients who have been admitted to the hospital by their primary care doctors, emergency room doctors or other specialty physicians. Mirroring the successful ORMG hospitalist program, CRMG hospitalists work in tandem with a patient's primary care physician, closely coordinating most aspects of their inpatient care.

Nationally Rated As Five-Star Recipient for Appendectomy Outcomes
CRMC Celebrates New Federally-Funded Generator With U.S. Congressman John Faso
Catskill Regional is 5-star rated for Appendectomy outcomes according to a study released by Healthgrades, the leading online resource for comprehensive information about physicians and hospitals and the first third party organization to objectively rate hospital quality with a focus strictly on clinical outcomes. A 5-star rating indicates that Catskill Regional Medical Center’s clinical outcomes are statistically significantly better than expected when treating the condition or performing the procedure being evaluated. Additionally, from 2014 through 2016, patients having an Appendectomy procedure in hospitals with 5 stars have, on average, a 65 percent lower risk of experiencing a complication while in the hospital than if they were treated by hospitals with 1 star. Similarly, patients having an Appendectomy procedure in hospitals receiving 1-star are, on average, 2.8 times more likely to experience one or more complications than if they were treated in hospitals with 5 stars.*
On October 17, we said “thank you” to U.S. Congressman John J. Faso, as Catskill Regional celebrated the installation of its brand new federally-funded generator! Congressman Faso was instrumental in securing the $1,726,697 grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to upgrade our aged generator. He stopped by to see what he helped secure for us and our community. Led by Rolland “Boomer” Bojo, several staff members were on hand to express their appreciation and gratitude. 3

Birthing Center CuddleCot™ Dedication Ceremony On October 19, Members of Catskill Regional Medical Center's Executive Team, Board of Directors, Foundation Board and Obstetrics Department came together to honor a CuddleCot™ Dedication Ceremony. For parents, parting with a stillborn baby is the first part of what can be a long and difficult grieving process. The CuddleCot™ device aims to make that journey a little easier. The CuddleCot™ is a cooling unit, and when placed within a Moses basket, pram, bassinet or crib, provides precious hours of bonding with a baby who has passed away before the natural changes that occur become more apparent.
In celebration of Catskill Regional Medical Center’s first CuddleCot™, members of the Executive Team, Board of Directors, Foundation Board, Obstetrics staff and representatives from Madison’s Miracles held a special dedication ceremony on October 18, 2018.
“There is no comparison to the gift of time during these circumstances,” said Catskill Regional Medical Center Foundation Chair Joan Farrow. “It’s important that this meaningful choice be offered to our grieving patients and their families.” The CuddleCot™ purchase for Catskill Regional was made possible by the generous donations of the CRMC Foundation, Foundation Chair, Joan Farrow, and the Farrow Family. In collaboration with Madison’s Miracles, this CuddleCot™ is giving the gift of time to grieving families. The CuddleCot™ affords families time with their baby during the most trying of circumstances. This is time that helps many begin coping with loss, even when beyond consolation, and their heart’s healing journey begins.
BOCES Health Occupations Program Offered At Catskill Regional Medical Center Catskill Regional has partnered with Sullivan BOCES to launch a Career & Technical Education Health Occupations Suite at its Harris Campus. At the ribbon cutting ceremony, Jonathan Schiller, Catskill Regional Medical Center Chief Operating Officer, welcomed elected officials, educators and students, and discussed the importance of providing local training for our future workforce. “Catskill Regional Medical Center has worked with Sullivan BOCES for many years in providing a clinical site for their programs,” says Schiller. “Creating instructional space within our walls is a natural progression to that partnership. Being on our Harris Campus will provide a real feel for the careers they are interested in pursuing.” The Health Occupations Program is one of the many opportunities offered through the Career & Technical Education (CTE) Center of Sullivan BOCES. Season Of Giving Family of Mary May Schmidt donates funds to CRMC in her memory The husband and family of Mary May Schmidt graciously donated funding in her memory and in honor of the caring and compassionate nurses in Catskill Regional Medical Center’s Oncology and Infusion Center. Through the generosity of Mary May’s family, the Oncology and Infusion Center was renovated to create a visual flow and a calming environment. It includes new paint colors that soften the palette and integrate a calming sense, new carpeting and a reception desk with new finishes. New artwork was also integrated and is indicative of the region’s landscapes. The Center’s furniture was upgraded including a staff break room that was changed to a larger room and now includes a new table, chairs and lockers. A mirror was installed for use by staff with patients who are in need of wigs and oncology-related accessories. A visitors’ waiting room was also transformed with a new color palette, literature rack and artwork with whimsical landscapes to engage the viewer. Patients and visitors now enjoy a beautiful healing environment where a plaque in Mary May’s name adorns the Center.
