From The President & CEO The year 2014 is coming to a close and we have a lot to be proud of.

Throughout the year we highlighted great patient satisfaction scores in numerous areas, had terrific employee engagement participation, opened our new medical group, celebrated our new Scott Batulis NICU Resource Room and relocated President & CEO our outpatient counseling services program to the newly renovated chemical dependency and substance abuse facility.

We continue to raise funds for our Pediatric Capital Campaign and we are nearing the first anniversary of the opening of our Children’s Emergency Department. A successful Joint Commission survey is behind us and we were recognized nationally for our efforts in Quality. These are just a few highlights. Congratulations to everyone for

all that we accomplished as a team. Our efforts touch thousands of patients and positively impact healthcare throughout our community.

The coming year promises to be exciting as we continue working on our vision and strategy for the future. We will make a concerted effort to involve and communicate with hospital family when planning and developing expansions and implementing or enhancing new and existing services, so we all continue to move forward “as one” and achieve our goals together.

The Joint Commission Recognizes Orange Regional as a 2013 Top Performer

®

Orange Regional has been recognized as a 2013 Top Performer on Key Quality Measures by the Joint Commission, the ® leading accreditor of health care organizations in the United States. As part of The Joint Commission’s 2014 annual report “America’s Hospitals: Improving Quality and Safety,” Orange Regional attained and sustained excellence in accountability measure performance for Heart Attack, Heart Failure, Pneumonia and Surgical Care and is one of 1,224 hospitals in the United States to achieve the 2013 Top Performer distinction.

The Top Performer program recognizes hospitals for improving performance on evidence-based interventions that increase the chances of healthy outcomes for patients with certain conditions, including heart attack, heart failure, pneumonia, surgical care, children’s asthma, stroke, venous thromboembolism and perinatal care, as well as for inpatient psychiatric services and immunizations. Bilingual Family Medicine Doctor Joins Medical Group Jennifer K. Vazquez-Bryan, MD, a bilingual Family Medicine physician, has joined the Department of Primary Care and will play an important role in further establishing this practice. In addition to her strong medical credentials, Dr. Vazquez-Bryan, who is fluent in Spanish, will be an asset to serving the growing Spanish speaking community. Prior to joining Orange Regional Medical Group, Dr. Vazquez-Bryan practiced Family Medicine at Columbia Valley Community Health in Wenatchee, Washington.

Dr. Vazquez-Bryan is a graduate of Rutgers, Robert Wood Johnson Medical School, where she earned her medical degree and multiple awards including Distinction in Service to the Community and Excellence in Family Medicine. She also holds a Masters of Public Health degree from University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Dr. Vazquez-Bryan has a Bachelor of Arts degree from Wellesley College in Wellesley, Massachusetts and completed her internship and residency at Swedish Family Medicine in Seattle, Washington. Dr. Vazquez-Bryan is a member of the American Academy of Family Medicine, one of the largest national medical associations of family doctors. She has been widely published and recognized for her selfless work promoting healthcare in impoverished areas. She is widely traveled and has spent extensive time with native groups in Guatemala, Mexico, Kenya and Alaska developing programs that benefit those communities. American Academy of Family Medicine National Assembly On October 23, members of the Greater Hudson Valley Health System Medical Group attended the American Academy of Family Medicine National Assembly in Washington, D.C. on a recruiting mission for top-notch talent. GHVHS Physician Recruiter, Michael Gailie scanned the QR code off the badge of a physician candidate at the American Academy of Family Medicine National Assembly in Washington D.C. The QR code puts candidate info directly into a spreadsheet so that we can easily follow up with perspective hires.

Congratulations First Annual Ronald H. Israelski, MD Excellence in Education Awards On December 1, Orange Regional celebrated its First Annual Ronald H. Israelski, MD Excellence in Education Awards. The event recognizes a distinguished group of physicians, resident physicians and medical students who have demonstrated educational innovation and excellence. Director of Medical Education, Dr. John Dermigny, DO and medical student, Christianna Anderson, were this year’s honorees. Dr. Ronald Israelski was also honored for his vision and leadership in medical education in Orange County. He was extremely instrumental in establishing the Graduate Medical Education Program at Orange Regional. Update

Hailey’s Hope Foundation Dedicates Family Resource Room In honor of National Prematurity Awareness Month and World Prematurity Day, Orange Regional Medical Center’s Rowley Family Birthing Center opened its new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Family Resource Room and dedicated it to Hailey’s Hope Foundation (HHF) on November 18, 2014.

With a celebratory ribbon-cutting ceremony, Orange Regional honored HHF for its support of NICU services and families of NICU patients. Since the opening of our NICU, Hailey’s Hope Foundation has donated more than $40,000 in funding, which includes the renovation and design of the new family resource room now used by parents with babies hospitalized within Orange Regional’s NICU. Hailey’s Hope Foundation is a local non-profit organization that supports families with premature and critically ill babies who are hospitalized in New York-area NICUs.

Foundation Estate Planning breakfast The Foundation Estate Planning breakfast was held on December 3 at West Hills Country Club. Richard J. Shapiro, Esq., and Sarita Bhandarkar, Esq., LL.M. Tax led the discussion on estate planning strategies. This breakfast was the first in a series of estate planning events with the next one scheduled for the Spring. News Fred Conklin, RN, BSN, CPHQ, has been promoted to Greater Hudson Valley Health System Director of Quality Services. Fred joined Orange Regional’s Quality Department in 2006 as Clinical Project Coordinator. In 2012, he took on the role of Director of Quality for Catskill Regional Medical Center. In his new role, Fred will provide leadership for the system-wide performance improvement activities for both Orange Regional and Catskill Regional Medical Centers. Fred obtained his Associate of Science degree in Nursing from Orange County Community College, and his Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from Chamberlain College of Nursing. He is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ) and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt. Fred can be reached at 794-3300 or fconklin@ormc.org.

Manuela Lupu has been promoted to Greater Hudson Valley Health System Accounting Manager.

Manuela joined Catskill Regional Medical Center in 2005, as General Account Analyst. In 2012, she became Accountant for Catskill Regional and most recently held the position of Senior Accountant. In her new role, she will be responsible for accounting and payroll staff throughout the System. Manuela attended the College for Management and Economic Science, in Romania, and is currently pursuing an Associate of Science degree in Accounting at SUNY Orange, in Middletown. Marisol Ortiz had been appointed as Greater Hudson Valley Health System Director of Patient Access Management. Marisol joined Orange Regional in 1990 as Patient Access Liaison/Registrar and has held a variety of roles over the past 24 years, with progressive responsibility within Patient Access Management (PAM). In May 2014, she took on the role of leading PAM at Catskill Regional, working closely with the team to manage operations and maintain POS momentum. In her expanded role, Marisol will continue to leverage her extensive knowledge of EPIC, PAM operations and revenue cycle management, to better align our current processes to reflect national best practice. She will also work more closely with operational leaders to assure that PAM effectively supports the patient and provider experience, from scheduling to discharge. Rachel Roeber RN, BSN, CPHQ, has been promoted to Greater Hudson Valley Health System Director of Clinical Documentation Improvement and DRG Optimization. Rachel joined Orange Regional in 2010 as Quality Nurse Specialist and most recently held the position of Director of Quality Services, where she was responsible for the development and implementation of the Performance Improvement Program at Orange Regional. In her new role, Rachel will oversee a system-wide team of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists (CDIS) and conduct pre and post-coding reviews of patient mortalities and hospital acquired conditions (HACs). Rachel obtained her Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing from SUNY Delhi. She is a Certified Professional in Healthcare Quality (CPHQ), a member of the Association of Clinical Documentation Improvement Specialists (ACDIS) and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt. Kelly Roth RN, OCN, has been promoted to Greater Hudson Valley Health System Manager, Regulatory and Patient Safety. Kelly has been a member of the Orange Regional Medical Center family since 2008, initially working as an RN in the inpatient and outpatient oncology areas, and then taking on the role of Manager, Regulatory and Patient Safety in 2013. Kelly’s scope of responsibility includes the coordination of accreditation activities and compliance with external agencies including The Joint Commission, CMS and NYSDOH, across all GHVHS facilities and sites. Kelly will also work with leaders and staff on initiatives to enhance the culture of patient safety. She obtained her Associate of Science degree in Applied Science in Nursing from SUNY Orange, and is currently working towards a Bachelor of Science Degree at Drexel University. Kelly is a Certified Oncology Nurse (OCN) and Lean Six Sigma Green Belt.

Coming Up Daisies Congratulations to Matt Adams, RN, 4 North, Orange Regional’s most recent recipient of the DAISY Award for Extraordinary Nurses. Matt received the DAISY Award for his persistence, compassion and caring manner. He is known to do everything in his power to ensure that all of his patients receive the best care possible.

Matt was nominated for the DAISY Award due in part by his patient, Heidi Thurtle, who spent several days at Orange Regional, starting in the Emergency Room, having surgery, then time in 4 North, 3 South and ICU. During her stay post surgery, Heidi was at the center of a Rapid Response call in which Matt was one of the responders.

"Although there were many people in the room helping me," Heidi said, "Matt’s cool head in the ensuing panic and speedy solution saved my life that day. When it was found I would have to change from 4N to another unit, I was initially nervous and worried until my nurse let me know that I would be transferred to 3S and that Matt would be my nurse. I knew then that I would be in good hands.”

During that time, and although Heidi was only on 3S for a couple hours, Matt worked tirelessly getting to the bottom of why she needed the Rapid Response. “His desk was outside my room and I heard him on the phone trying to reach my surgeon, other doctors and other departments in order to piece together the puzzle. He checked relentlessly for my test results, while giving me updates and reassurances. He assured me that we would get to the bottom of this, squeezing my hand and constantly asking if there was anything I needed or if I was in any pain. He communicated everything to me and even when he had to tell me that due to what he was seeing with my results, I would have to be transferred to the ICU, he did it with care and love. He personally transported me to the ICU and handed me off to the staff there with everything I needed to get better. I truly believe that I would have not recovered as quickly as I did or as well as I did without Matt Adams. He is truly a gift to Orange Regional Medical Center,” Heidi added.

Trauma Services Program Receives Donation

On November 26, the Town of Wallkill Ambulance Corp. donated a backboard, a traction splint and various board splints to the Orange Regional Trauma Department. These items will be use for hands-on education for the community.

“Hallway of Heroes” In honor of Veteran’s Day, the Gallery at Orange Regional Medical Center showcased a photo exhibit of employees who served our country in the United States Armed Services and held a ceremony honoring these brave individuals. The celebration provided employees the opportunity to speak about their personal experiences.

It also honored employees, volunteers and patients who are veterans. Photos of Orange Regional veterans and their short biographies were also displayed in a “Hallway of Heroes” at the Main Campus for several weeks leading up to Veteran’s Day.

Auxiliary Vendor Sales Program The Orange Regional Medical Center Auxiliary is pleased to continue its Vendor Sales Program. Twenty percent of all vendor sales are donated to the Auxiliary. So, shop until you drop and know that a portion of the proceeds go toward a great cause.

Annual Education Reminder Employees who joined the Greater Hudson Valley Health System in 2014 and have completed the general hospital orientation, have already fulfilled the annual education requirement. For all other employees, annual education must be completed by December 31, 2014.

Salt of the Earth Art Exhibit Salt of the Earth opened on Friday, November 21, in the Gallery at Orange Regional and employees, patients and their families met the artist and enjoyed farm-to-table refreshments. Salt of the Earth is a social documentary exhibit that tells the story of Orange County farmers and their families who have chosen to preserve their land through conservation. Featuring black and white images

by Warwick photographer Robert Skinner with accompanying stories by local writer Dorothy Gaydos, the exhibit explores the relationship local farmers have with the land.
