CALL
ello, Mrs. Halliburton. This is the eighth-grade school counselor. I’m calling about your son Grant. It seems he’s been cutting himself lately, and I think you’ll want to get some help for him right away. Do you know a therapist or psychiatrist?
Monday – Friday 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
This was the call Grant Halliburton Foundation Co-founder Vanita Halliburton received from her son’s middle school one sunny day when she was 1,000 miles from home on a business trip. She says she was stunned and remembers stepping out of a meeting to take the call. “When I hung up, I sat down on a curb and cried. I didn’t know what else

to do,” Halliburton said. “I could have asked anyone for a referral to a doctor or dentist—a friend, neighbor, co-worker, family member or another parent—but this was a mental health issue. The stigma around

options for resources that match their specific needs for mental health care. The new helpline is the first of its kind in North Texas and is available to callers seeking resources for themselves or for someone else, such as a family member, patient,

A MESSAGE FROM FOUNDATION PRESIDENT
KEVIN HALL Today’s world is more complex and challenging than ever before. A multitude of social and institutional issues threaten the prosperity our society yearns for. To address these issues, a host of organizations—large and small, for-profit and not-for-profit—work tirelessly to promote positive change and make our communities better places to work and live. All these organizations depend on one critical catalyst for change: a community of champions. These are people who have the vision, passion, and commitment to help pursue and influence positive outcomes.
Grant Halliburton Foundation is fortunate to have many community champions for the cause of youth mental health and suicide prevention. Our champions include many funders who provide the financial resources necessary for the Foundation’s programs to grow. In the past year, a dozen local foundations and the Connection H•E•R•E auxiliary came together to fund the launch of our Here For Texas Mental Health Navigation Line, filling a vast unmet need in our community. Many others continue to fund our growing mental health education programs.
Our champions go far beyond those who provide monetary support. We are fortunate to have committed volunteers managing the mental health navigation phone lines and providing help and hope to those in need. On the education front, we partnered with Parish Episcopal School to develop a mental health education program called CenterED. With Head of School Dave Monaco and his team, we created a comprehensive strategy that is scalable to schools across North Texas. This required vision and commitment that went beyond the “business as usual” mentality of some traditional educational systems. It required champions. We have leveraged CenterED into a comprehensive educational strategy called Thrive, which includes partnerships with more champions: the UT Dallas Center for BrainHealth, The Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, Okay to Say, and Hope Squad. With the commitment of Anna ISD Director of Counseling Vince Sharp, we will implement Thrive in Anna ISD schools this fall. And other school partners in the Texoma area are not far behind, thanks to our partnership with Texoma Health Foundation. They have rallied an entire community around mental health awareness, education, and advocacy. All of these are champions.
Beacon of Hope Community Luncheon Celebrates 10 Years of Hope More than 300 people gathered at the Westin Galleria Dallas for the 10th annual Beacon of Hope Luncheon, featuring speaker, physician, and filmmaker Delaney Ruston, M.D. Dr. Ruston wove together pieces of her own story as the daughter of a schizophrenic father with insights from her research on the impact of screen time and use on teen mental health, emphasizing the sharing of mental health stories as fundamental to healing.
What outcomes/benefits do you expect to see in a school where Thrive is implemented? We hope students will become more mindful, engaged, and self-aware. It’s been proven that children who are mentally and emotionally healthy become better students. They’re more confident in who they are and more competent in their abilities. Thrive has five key pillars: Awareness, Student Education, Adult Training, Peer to Peer, and Research. Focusing on each pillar provides a wraparound approach that allows students to feel safe in sharing and hopefully have an improved quality of life. Long-term, we hope to see students cope with life stressors in healthier ways, grow in empathy, and model positive behaviors for younger students. Additionally, in a school where the overall health and well-being of students is improved, the school counselors have greater capacity to support students with problems related to

CALL

The stigma around

situation can be frustrating, confusing, and daunting. Grant Halliburton Foundation’s new helpline has answers. Earlier this year, the Foundation introduced its Here For Texas Mental Health Navigation Line, a free helpline that provides callers with information and

options for resources that match their specific needs for mental health care. The new helpline is the first of its kind in North Texas and is available to callers seeking resources for themselves or for someone else, such as a family member, patient,

The new community resource is an extension of Grant Halliburton Foundation’s HereForTexas.com website––a comprehensive database of more than 700 North Texas mental health providers and resources. “The day I got that phone call from the middle school counselor, I would have given anything to have been able to call a trained mental health navigator to help me find the resources I needed for my son,” Halliburton said. “I’m proud that Grant Halliburton Foundation can provide this kind of help.” To learn more about the Mental Health Navigation Line or to find resources, visit HereForTexas.com.
