Podcast host Nora McInerny delivers the day’s first keynote at When Life Hands You Teenagers on September 25.
M
ore than 400 educators, parents, mental health professionals and community members attended Grant Halliburton Foundation’s sold-out 10th annual When Life Hands You Teenagers conference at the Plano Event Center on September 25. The day began with a keynote presentation by Nora McInerny, nationally known podcast host and author who defines herself as a “reluctant grief expert and notable widow.” With heart and humor, she shared with attendees how her own pain changed her family, her parenting, and her approach to life, and how life’s most painful moments can create opportunities for change, connection, and growth. Other speakers included Erin Walsh, M.A., of Spark and Stitch Institute. She provided critical information about fostering wellness in teenagers growing up in the rapidly changing digital age.

GIVING DAY
Anna ISD is First in Texas to Introduce Thrive
A
nna Independent School District recently became the first district in Texas to adopt Thrive, Grant Halliburton Foundation’s new strategy that infuses mental, social and emotional health into the academic culture of schools. In addition to the Foundation, Thrive partners include The Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, The UT Dallas Center for BrainHealth, Okay to Say, and Hope Squad. Working with these mental health partners, Thrive incorporates evidence-based best practices, forming integrated layers of programs targeted to three critical audiences: students, faculty/staff, and parents. Programs are implemented through classroom education,

extracurricular activities, peer-based programs, communitywide awareness campaigns, teacher/adult training, and speaker series and seminars. At a recent luncheon to celebrate the Anna launch, Foundation co-founder Vanita Halliburton said that Thrive will transform the way students learn, grow, and flourish in Anna. “With Thrive setting the new standard for academic culture, a new era in education has arrived in Anna ISD,” Halliburton said. “Educators there can now regard the primary aim of education as more than filling a child’s mind with knowledge.” For more information, visit GrantHalliburton.org/thrive

The Q&A: Peace Un-earthed?
Representatives from Anna ISD, Grant Halliburton Foundation, Thrive partners, and the community celebrate the official launch of Thrive at Anna High School on September 18.
