Foundation Hosts 9th Annual When Life Hands You Teenagers

Other featured speakers included Lori G. Cook, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, director of clinical research for the Center for BrainHealth at The University of Texas at Dallas, who spoke about increased teen brain potential and resilience.

Jeff Temple, Ph.D., director of behavioral health and research at The University of Texas Medical Branch, discussed risky behaviors among adolescents, including substance misuse, violence, sexual risk-taking, and sexting.

As we wind our way toward the holidays, I can’t help but reflect on 2018 with great pride and appreciation for our incredible staff and our generous supporters across North Texas.

Without a doubt, this has been a year of growth that has exceeded our greatest expectations. We’re incredibly thankful to our supporters who believe in the Foundation’s vital work and allow us to continue providing services to support families in need of mental health education, resources, and encouragement.

Last year, our goal was to reach more than 25,000 students, parents, teachers, and professionals with our education programs. We surpassed that number by reaching more than 31,500 people––93 percent of those were children, teens, and young adults.

This year, we are tracking to reach more than 35,000 people.

With your support, earlier this year we added a fourth educator to our staff. As we continue to grow, we simply couldn’t meet the demand for our education programs with only three educators.

I’m also thrilled to announce that after many months of planning and fundraising, we have launched our Here For Texas Mental Health Navigation Line.

I AM H•E•R•E Coalition Hosts Beyond Bullying Conference More than 180 educators, parents and professionals who work with teens attended the 8th Annual Beyond Bullying back-to-school conference on August 12 at Woodcreek Church in Richardson.

Presented by I AM H∙E∙R∙E Coalition, the half-day Psy.D., president and CEO of Communities in Schools motives behind those who bully and steps to foster a strength-based approach to bullying.

Record Number of Donors Opened Wallets, Hearts on North Texas Giving Day

North Texas donors rallied to raise a record $48 million for North Texas Giving Day on September 20, benefiting 2,690 area nonprofits.

Grant Halliburton Foundation shared in the record-breaking success. Spurred on by a $20,000 Challenge Fund raised from generous supporters and the Foundation’s board of directors, more than 180 donors gave $68,881 to the Foundation.

North Texas Giving Day, now in its tenth year, is a one-day giving event that benefits 501c3 nonprofits throughout North Texas. It is the largest community-wide giving day in the United States.

out when a student learns from a mistake and fixes it. Character development happens organically when students do things for other people, such as tutoring or mentoring each other or performing community service. Structured programs, like Grant Halliburton Foundation’s new Bounce Back presentation, support these activities and build a sense of contribution, competence, confidence, and connection (especially when those actions involve developing relationships with the same people over time).

Teaching school staff to recognize problem attitudes or behaviors as dysfunctional responses to stress helps those adults to be part of finding solutions instead of creating more problems for an already struggling student. It is critical for schools to understand that kids in trouble don’t need to get in more trouble; kids in trouble need help. Schools can lead the charge on programming that helps students learn healthy coping strategies, focusing on real life needs such as conflict resolution or collaborative problem-solving, social skills development, counseling, mindfulness training, etc.

How do parents promote resilience at home?

Techniques that work at school will also work at home, only the context is a little different. As parents, we promote resilience when we give our kids chores but allow them a say in when or how those tasks get completed. We help them feel validated and important when we take their needs into consideration when making family decisions, but also help them to consider the needs of others in the family. We help our children learn to problem-solve and recover from mistakes by avoiding overreaction to failure or poor performance but instead encourage them to consider for themselves what they might do differently the next time. In fact, these are great opportunities to remind our children that we love them unconditionally, even if we hold them to high expectations, and to express our confidence that they can and will figure it out in the future.

When we empower our children to develop their resilience skills in their own way, they learn that their opinions and actions matter. They grow up to become adults who are more likely to make their own “right choices” for their own “right reasons.”

What is resilience and why is it important?

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from stress. Picture a sapling tree being pulled down almost to the ground before getting released to snap back (and forth) and lose all three of its baby leaves. But it doesn’t break, and over time it gets taller, thicker, and stronger, to the point that it would take a tornado to take that tree down. That’s resilience in nature and a metaphor for the resilience we want for ourselves. Life is hard; it is impossible to protect our children from every stress or challenge. But we can foster their ability to overcome difficulties and thrive despite negative circumstances.

What are the traits of a resilient teen?

Resilient teens have skills to navigate difficult situations. They know what to do when things are hard, and they are willing to ask for help when they can’t handle something on their own. They stand up for themselves when they have to, but they also maintain connections to people who’ve got their back in case they need support. They are often perceived as young people who naturally make better choices. However, resilience is also seen in kids who get in trouble but then find the strength to turn their lives in the right direction. There are kids who are naturally resilient, and there are kids who can become resilient with the right opportunities, love and mentorship.

What can adults do to model healthy resilience strategies for teens?

None of us adults are perfect. We’ve all made mistakes, but most likely we have learned to survive those lumps and bumps along the way. What we have that our teens do not is more wisdom from having lived longer than they have. But what they have that we did not is a new world to grow up in, filled with different (and potentially more treacherous) challenges, some of which we barely understand (such as social media). Our teenagers—and children of all ages, really—need the attributes of resilience more than ever for their own survival.

Modeling resilience is one of the best ways to impart these characteristics to young people.

They watch everything we do; they hear everything we say (even when we’re sure they’re not paying attention). We have to let them see us take care of our own needs, build our own competencies, and even praise ourselves sometimes instead of being self-deprecating or minimizing our achievements. They need to see that we value making ethical and compassionate decisions, and that given the choice, we will always try to do the right thing. We show them resilience when we stay connected to the important people in our lives and go out of our way to help others. When we are struggling, they need to see us cope in healthy ways. We strengthen our teens by showing them it’s okay to say when we’re not okay. Perhaps most importantly, they need to know that we don’t have all the answers but we are willing to ask for help when we need it. Because even the most resilient among us is not an island; we need our children to understand that no matter how resilient they may be, asking for help is a sign of strength, never a sign of weakness.

How can school foster a culture of resilience in the classroom?

Schools help build resilience by supporting students to develop skills based on their strengths, especially those that will lead to successful navigation of life in the future. This includes not just academics but also social skills and emotional self-regulation (such as anger management, healthy self-soothing behaviors, etc.). They support confidence by seeing the best in kids, focusing on what they do right (rather than only their mistakes) but still holding them to high expectations. When adults see the best in students instead of shaming them, even after they have messed up, they more easily see the best in themselves and find internal motivation to do better the next time.

Resilience gets fostered in school settings where students are encouraged to develop strong connections to at least one caring adult, such as a teacher, counselor, coach, or administrator. This can be life-saving, especially for those who face daunting challenges at home. Schools help build character not just by posting slogans on walls, but also by recognizing when a student performs a spontaneous act of kindness or by pointing

Susan Sugerman, M.D., MPH, FAAP, is president and co-founder of Girls to Women Health and Wellness and Young Men’s Heath and Wellness, a multidisciplinary medical practice in North Dallas.

Prior to opening Girls to Women, Dr. Sugerman practiced at Southern Methodist University, where she served as a staff physician in student health and coordinated educational and outreach programming.

Dr. Sugerman is Board Certified in Pediatrics and a Fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics. Dr. Sugerman also serves on the Board of Directors for Grant Halliburton Foundation.

As we wind our way toward the holidays, I can’t help but reflect on 2018 with great pride and appreciation for our incredible staff and our generous supporters across North Texas.

Without a doubt, this has been a year of growth that has exceeded our greatest expectations. We’re incredibly thankful to our supporters who believe in the Foundation’s vital work and allow us to continue providing services to support families in need of mental health education, resources, and encouragement.

Last year, our goal was to reach more than 25,000 students, parents, teachers, and professionals with our education programs. We surpassed that number by reaching more than 31,500 people––93 percent of those were children, teens, and young adults.

This year, we are tracking to reach more than 35,000 people.

With your support, earlier this year we added a fourth educator to our staff. As we continue to grow, we simply couldn’t meet the demand for our education programs with only three educators.

I’m also thrilled to announce that after many months of planning and fundraising, we have launched our Here For Texas Mental Health Navigation Line.

I AM H•E•R•E Coalition Hosts Beyond Bullying Conference More than 180 educators, parents and professionals who work with teens attended the 8th Annual Beyond Bullying back-to-school conference on August 12 at Woodcreek Church in Richardson.

Presented by I AM H∙E∙R∙E Coalition, the half-day Psy.D., president and CEO of Communities in Schools motives behind those who bully and steps to foster a strength-based approach to bullying.

North Texas donors rallied to raise a record $48 million for North Texas Giving Day on September 20, benefiting 2,690 area nonprofits.

Grant Halliburton Foundation shared in the record-breaking success. Spurred on by a $20,000 Challenge Fund raised from generous supporters and the Foundation’s board of directors, more than 180 donors gave $68,881 to the Foundation.

North Texas Giving Day, now in its tenth year, is a one-day giving event that benefits 501c3 nonprofits throughout North Texas. It is the largest community-wide giving day in the United States.

“We are beyond grateful for the generosity of donors who gave to the Foundation on North Texas Giving Day,” Kevin Hall, Grant Halliburton Foundation president, said. “The success of this record-breaking day would not have been possible without the support of our generous Challenge Fund Donors.”

out when a student learns from a mistake and fixes it. Character development happens organically when students do things for other people, such as tutoring or mentoring each other or performing community service. Structured programs, like Grant Halliburton Foundation’s new Bounce Back presentation, support these activities and build a sense of contribution, competence, confidence, and connection (especially when those actions involve developing relationships with the same people over time).

Teaching school staff to recognize problem attitudes or behaviors as dysfunctional responses to stress helps those adults to be part of finding solutions instead of creating more problems for an already struggling student. It is critical for schools to understand that kids in trouble don’t need to get in more trouble; kids in trouble need help. Schools can lead the charge on programming that helps students learn healthy coping strategies, focusing on real life needs such as conflict resolution or collaborative problem-solving, social skills development, counseling, mindfulness training, etc.

How do parents promote resilience at home?

Techniques that work at school will also work at home, only the context is a little different. As parents, we promote resilience when we give our kids chores but allow them a say in when or how those tasks get completed. We help them feel validated and important when we take their needs into consideration when making family decisions, but also help them to consider the needs of others in the family. We help our children learn to problem-solve and recover from mistakes by avoiding overreaction to failure or poor performance but instead encourage them to consider for themselves what they might do differently the next time. In fact, these are great opportunities to remind our children that we love them unconditionally, even if we hold them to high expectations, and to express our confidence that they can and will figure it out in the future.

When we empower our children to develop their resilience skills in their own way, they learn that their opinions and actions matter. They grow up to become adults who are more likely to make their own “right choices” for their own “right reasons.”

What is resilience and why is it important?

Resilience is the ability to bounce back from stress. Picture a sapling tree being pulled down almost to the ground before getting released to snap back (and forth) and lose all three of its baby leaves. But it doesn’t break, and over time it gets taller, thicker, and stronger, to the point that it would take a tornado to take that tree down. That’s resilience in nature and a metaphor for the resilience we want for ourselves. Life is hard; it is impossible to protect our children from every stress or challenge. But we can foster their ability to overcome difficulties and thrive despite negative circumstances.

What are the traits of a resilient teen?

Resilient teens have skills to navigate difficult situations. They know what to do when things are hard, and they are willing to ask for help when they can’t handle something on their own. They stand up for themselves when they have to, but they also maintain connections to people who’ve got their back in case they need support. They are often perceived as young people who naturally make better choices. However, resilience is also seen in kids who get in trouble but then find the strength to turn their lives in the right direction. There are kids who are naturally resilient, and there are kids who can become resilient with the right opportunities, love and mentorship.

What can adults do to model healthy resilience strategies for teens?

None of us adults are perfect. We’ve all made mistakes, but most likely we have learned to survive those lumps and bumps along the way. What we have that our teens do not is more wisdom from having lived longer than they have. But what they have that we did not is a new world to grow up in, filled with different (and potentially more treacherous) challenges, some of which we barely understand (such as social media). Our teenagers—and children of all ages, really—need the attributes of resilience more than ever for their own survival.

Modeling resilience is one of the best ways to impart these characteristics to young people.

They watch everything we do; they hear everything we say (even when we’re sure they’re not paying attention). We have to let them see us take care of our own needs, build our own competencies, and even praise ourselves sometimes instead of being self-deprecating or minimizing our achievements. They need to see that we value making ethical and compassionate decisions, and that given the choice, we will always try to do the right thing. We show them resilience when we stay connected to the important people in our lives and go out of our way to help others. When we are struggling, they need to see us cope in healthy ways. We strengthen our teens by showing them it’s okay to say when we’re not okay. Perhaps most importantly, they need to know that we don’t have all the answers but we are willing to ask for help when we need it. Because even the most resilient among us is not an island; we need our children to understand that no matter how resilient they may be, asking for help is a sign of strength, never a sign of weakness.

How can school foster a culture of resilience in the classroom?

Schools help build resilience by supporting students to develop skills based on their strengths, especially those that will lead to successful navigation of life in the future. This includes not just academics but also social skills and emotional self-regulation (such as anger management, healthy self-soothing behaviors, etc.). They support confidence by seeing the best in kids, focusing on what they do right (rather than only their mistakes) but still holding them to high expectations. When adults see the best in students instead of shaming them, even after they have messed up, they more easily see the best in themselves and find internal motivation to do better the next time.

Resilience gets fostered in school settings where students are encouraged to develop strong connections to at least one caring adult, such as a teacher, counselor, coach, or administrator. This can be life-saving, especially for those who face daunting challenges at home. Schools help build character not just by posting slogans on walls, but also by recognizing when a student performs a spontaneous act of kindness or by pointing

Foundation Hosts 9th Annual When Life Hands You Teenagers

ore than 200 parents, educators, mental health professionals, and community members attended Grant

Halliburton Foundation’s 9th Annual When Plano Event Center on September 12. This year Tarrant, Ellis, Denton, and Grayson counties.

Other featured speakers included Lori G. Cook, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, director of clinical research for the Center for BrainHealth at The University of Texas at Dallas, who spoke about increased teen brain potential and resilience.

Jeff Temple, Ph.D., director of behavioral health and research at The University of Texas Medical Branch, discussed risky behaviors among adolescents, including substance misuse, violence, sexual risk-taking, and sexting.

Vanita Halliburton trained attendees on adolescent stress, mental health, suicide prevention, and other issues facing youth today.
