Celebrating 30 glorious years

Sunshine Grammar School & College (SGSC) entered its glorious 30th year of academic excellence in 2014. To celebrate the success of the School’s high achieving Alumni, ‘Sunshiner's Reunion 2013: Celebrating 30 Glorious Years’ was held on the 8th of November 2013 in the Chittagong Boat Club Multipurpose Convention Center. People in attendance included our Alumni's and students from our institutions under Sunshine Education, parents, teachers and well-wishers of the School.

The event was a grand affair with an attendance of fifteen hundred people and was organized by ‘The Big Stage’, with support from Sunshine Grammar School & College and its sister concerns, Chittagong Sunshine College (CSC) and Chittagong Sunshine School(CSS).

The grand event was widely covered by the Press, and a documentary video of the event was aired twice on Bijoy TV, thanks to Barrister Chowdhury Mohibul Hassan, an Alumni of Sunshine and head of Bijoy TV. Other TV channels - including Channel 24, Principal Safia Ghazi Rahman welcomes guests at the Sunshiner’s Reunion 2013.

Ekattor TV - and all the top local and national newspapers gave extensive press coverage to the much talked-about event.

The Event kicked off with a theatrical patriotic dance and song rendition by students of Chittagong Sunshine School, followed by a number of acts, including contemporary dance and drama. The Alumni awarded a ceremonial crest to the School’s Principal Safia Ghazi Rahman, and Senior Teachers of the School for their motivation and dedication towards giving them an education that has made them global citizens in its truest sense.

... of the Year 2011’, was presented a special Award by the Faculty for his exceptional achievement in Sports. Following the Award Ceremony, Alumni who had especially flown in from abroad to attend the Event, presented speeches and shared memorabke anecdotes about their School life. This was followed by a spectacular performance by one the country’s top rock bands, ‘Blunderware’. Two members of the band, Salman Zahir and Rushnaf Wadud, who are also Sunshine Alumni, enthralled the crowd with their vibrant performance. Students of Grade 8 joined them on stage with electric guitars and performed with the band in two of their performances. (Continued from Page 1)

Tamim and his Wife randomly drew ticket numbers in the ‘Lucky Draw’ contest, with the lucky Alumni winning a variety of prizes, from diamonds (courtesy of Mr. Dilip Kumar, Diamond World) to international return air tickets, courtesy of Sunshiner Mashruf Habib, CEO Regent Airways.

The highlight of the Event was a delightful Musical Performance by Bangladesh’s top musician, Habib Wahid and his troupe. The audience were enthralled with Habib’s live rendition of his chart topping hits. Incidentally, Mithun Chakma, an alumnus of Sunshine, is the lead drummer of Habib’s troupe, and gave a special solo drum performance which was met with an ovation. The School extends its gratitude to the ‘Big Stage’, the School Reunion Committee, Teachers and Students of the Institutions under the Sunshine Group, Parents, Alumni, Sponsors, Media and all Wellwishers who contributed to the success of the Event.

Following the success of the Event, the School promises to host more grand events in the near future, with the support of its students and Alumni.

Sunshine Snapshots Walkathons, Interactive Competitions, International Conferencing, Debating, Model United Nations Meets and Upgraded Sports Facilities are only a few of the changes that is metamorphosing Sunshine into a truly International School. 29th Anniversary Walkathon

On the joyous occasion of Sunshine's 29th Anniversary, Students and Teachers of the School participated in a Grand Walkathon on the 14th of January 2013. Students from Grades 5 - A Levels participated in the Rally. The event concluded by a heartwarming speech by our dear Principal, Ms. Safia Ghazi Rahman, and a cake-cutting ceremony by our students.

Rapid Fire Interactive Chess Competition

The IT Department, headed by Mr. Jamir Ahmed, conducted a PC-0based fully digital ‘Rapid Fire Chess Competition’ for the Middle Years. All the Students from Classes 5, 6 and 7 participated in the Event. The Final Round of the Event was held in the presence of 300 strong crowd.

The IT Department will host a FIFA 2014 Interactive Tournament in the coming months.

Upgraded Indoor Games Facilities

New additions to the Sunshine Indoor Games Suite include multiple foosball tables, carom tables, a table-tennis board and two dart boards. At present the indoor games Suite, with its various facilities, can host more than 50 students at any given time.

During the current academic year, class-wise Table Tennis matches for boys and Carom Matches for girls have been hosted in the Suite, and the winners awarded certificates and prizes.

Multi Purpose Sports Field

A brand new customized Multipurpose sports field has been created for Sunshiners, where a variety of Outdoor Games, such as Football, Volleyball, Badminton and Handball can be played. Outdoor Flood Lighting enables students to play Games late into the evening.

A 5-a-side football tournament has successfully been held in the premises under floodlit illumination, where students of Classes VII-A Levels participated.

Brand New Interactive Multimedia Suite & Junior Library

Sunshine has invested in a brand new, top of the line Interactive & Multimedia Suite, and a Junior Library for the Primary/Middle Year Students. The interactive room has a Magic Board & high-spec LCD projector through which they attend interactive classes using the latest educational software, such as Peppa Pig, Dora the Explorer, etc., directly sourced from the United Kingdom. The introduction of a new mode of visual learning has enhanced the learning experience of our students manyfold. The Junior library has a growing collection of children books, which are updated on a monthly basis.

Annual Qiraat Competition & Junior Spelling Bee

The Annual Qiraat Competition to judge the 'Best Reciter' of the verses of the Holy Quran was held in the School Auditorium. 50 students qualified for the Main Event. The Junior Spelling Bee was a major success as well, with prizes awarded to the highest scorers. Thirteen of our students qualified for the Regional Finals, and two qualified for the National Finals, a great feat indeed.

Upgradation of the ‘Sunshine Shuttle’

Sunshine has introduced two new airconditioned Microbuses to transport students to and from School. The existing School Bus has also undergone a major refurbishment, with improved seating and ventilation, for the convenience of our students. The Bus Routes have been carefully planned to minimise commutes and maximise efficiency. Look out for the ‘Sunshine Shuttles’ in your local area.

Visit by the Canadian High Commission

Ms. Shaheen Islam, Senior Education - Public Affairs Advisor (FPDS) High Commission of Canada, visited Sunshine in September 2013 to promote Canadian Higher Education to our students. A presentation about the Canadian Higher Education was followed by a lively Q&A session in the School Auditorium. The Canadian HC will be making another visit to Sunshine later this year.

Sunshiners voice their opinions on Global Issues in International Conference

Sunshine is the first Bangladeshi school to be involved in a global ‘Faith Project’ organised by the United Kingdom, an initiative undertaken by one of the top British Diplomats who is also a United Nations Ambassador. The project brings together school children from across the globe using video conferencing. With a view to breaking down barriers between students of different continents to promote unity and peace by avoiding conflict, Sunshiners spoke on a global stage about eradication of diseases, particularly Malaria, and opined their views on the importance of ‘Faith & Religion’ in preventing epidemics and diseases in the community. Moderated by Canadian Health Activitist Mr. D Richmond, Sunshiners received kudos from the Conference organisers, who commented that Sunshiners were ‘...young men and women who genuinely want to assist in the fight against malaria, speaking about this as a moral issue that is basic to humanity.’, and ‘...their questions and responses were genuinely inspiring.’

Sunshiners host the Second National Earth & Earth Sciences Olympiad 2013

In partnership with the Bangladesh Youth Environment Initiative, Sunshine was the proud host of the Second National Earth and Earth Sciences Olympiad. The widely publicised event tested Students on topics relating to the Earth Sciences & Climate Change. More than 300 students from across the best Schools in Chittagong participated. Twenty five of the top performers were shortlisted to travel to Dhaka for the National Finals. The Sub-Regional Round will be held in India early this year, which will be followed by the International Finals in the United States. Sunshine thanks BYEI and the Embassy of the United States in Dhaka for their assistance.

Sunshine wins Top Business Award International ‘Red Hand Day’ Celebrated Climate Change Awareness Sunshiners clinch top Scholarships

BUSINESS IDEA CONTEST

Sunshiners clinched a top award in the Daily Star Drishti Business Idea contest after delivering impressive Powerpoint Presentations to a panel of eminent business Consultants. Sunshiners Faruq Al Mahmud, Sakif Chowdhury and Kazi Shams fought off competition from some of the top English & Bengali Medium Schools of Chittagong. Their tasks included designing a marketing campaign for a new Soft Drink, and re-branding Cox’s Bazar as a beach resort. More than 100 Sunshiners painted their hands red to mark their support against the use of Child Soldiers worlwide. Students participated in a Seminar to discuss about the unfortunate fates these children face and gained an insight of the psychological trauma they suffer. The Red Hand Day came to a close with Sunshiners painting their hands red and imprinting their handprints on a banner, which was later posted to the United Nations HQ in New York. The School organised a special Climate Change event to raise awareness among Sunshiners about the devastating consequences of climate change on the Environment. Students delivered presentations on the impact of rapid industrialization, urbanization and unplanned construction on the environment. An Art Competition encouraged students to express their thoughts about the impact of Climate Change through the use of colour and imagery. The winning artwork were exhibited in a public display. Following the attainment of another excellent set of A Level results, 2013 saw many of our students continue the tradition of being awarded scholarships to study in the top Universities of the World. Aseer, Zubair and Faiyaz were awarded full Scholarships by the Korean Advanced University of Science & Engineering, Monash and MacQuarie respectively. Rakesh and Mashrur received handsome scholarships from the Hong Kong University and the University of South Florida.

FIRST INTERNATIONAL ‘SUNSHINE-NUH’ MEDICAL SYMPOSIUM

Sunshine successfully hosted its first International Medical Symposium in Chittagong, Bangladesh in August 2013, in partnership with National University Hospital, Singapore (NUH). The National University Hospital, Singapore, is a medical establishment considered to be one of the best in the world for Clinical Practice and Medical Research. Prominent doctors from the United Kingdom & Singapore presented key notes during the Symposium.

Following the introductory opening speech by the Principal of Sunshine Grammar School & College, Safia Ghazi Rahman, presentations were made by Mr. Feng Zhang, (National University Hospital Representative & Radiographer), Dr Ridzuan Farouk (Colorectal Surgeon) and Mr. Joseph Thambiah (Orthopaedic Surgeon).

With the theme being Physical Wellbeing in those suffering Chronic Medical Diseases relevant to the Bangladeshi population, particularly among professionals like teachers and academics, the symposium focused on important issues such as Cancer management and treatment, Sleep Hygiene, Surgical management of Orthopaedic conditions and an update on the latest therapeutic advancements in the management of chronic health conditions.

Selected Academic Staff of the School and Parents underwent a thorough physical health check during the second phase of the Symposium, and were advised on treatment plans by the visiting International Clinicians. A total of hundred guests attended the highly informative event.
