Obama heads to Africa to promote investment and democracy

The trip aims to bolster investment opportunities for U.S. businesses, address development issues such as food security and health, and promote democracy.

It comes as China aggressively engages the continent. The Asian nation is pouring billions of dollars into Africa, running oil and mining firms, and replaced the United States in 2009 as the largest trading partner.

Obama’s predecessor, George W. Bush, will be in Africa at the same time.

Bush has made multiple visits to Africa since leaving office, and will be in Zambia next week, w h e r e h e ’s w o r k i n g with his global health initiative to renovate a cervical cancer screening and treatment center.

While the 44th and 43rd president are not scheduled to meet, first lady Michelle Obama and her predecessor, Laura Bush, will attend the African First Ladies Summit in Tanzania on July 2.

Obama’s trip is being overshadowed by the declining health of South Africa’s revered former president, Nelson Mandela, who is in critical condition at a Pretoria hospital.

Mandela, who emerged from prison after 27 years to lead South Africa out of its dark days of apartheid, is considered the father of modern day South Africa.

Obama will be in Senegal Thursday and Friday. He arrives in South Africa on Saturday, where he will spend the weekend taking part in a host of activities, including meeting with the nation’s leaders and visiting Robben Island, where Mandela spent a majority of his prison term.

He will spend Monday and Tuesday in Tanzania, and is expected back in Washington on July 3.

The president made a brief trip to Ghana during his first term in July 2009.

Impact Deliverance Institute "School of Deliverance" storms Kingston, Jamaica

Impact Deliverance Institute – School of Deliverance Graduation Class of 2013, Kingston, Jamaica

Impact Deliverance Institute in partnership with Fellowship Tabernacle welcomed the School of Deliverance to Kingston, Jamaica May 20-26th, 2013. Over the course of seven days, Dr. Bob Tacky exposed 160 students to solid biblical teachings on spiritual warfare and deliverance.

Students were taught about such topics as; the origin of Satan and demons; the personalities and activities of demons, the mind-the battlefield of spiritual warfare, how to break generational curses, how to identify marine and abortion spirits, etc. They also gained practical experi-

ence on how to minister to the oppressed as they were given the opportunity to minister during the deliverance clinic.

This was a one of a kind in the nation of Jamaica and the interest in the School of Deliverance was unprecedented.

Many of the students tes-

tified of being set free after many years of affliction. Their testimonies were not only touching but showed the enabling power of God to heal and set the captives free.

The School of Deliverance graduation ceremony was held on Sunday, May 26th and 146 stu-

dents who successfully completed the course requirements graduated with a Diploma of Deliverance Education. Not only has these graduates gained knowledge on spiritual warfare, but they are now equipped to advance the Kingdom of God by setting others free.

The new law will make it a criminal offence to wear a mask or conceal your identity during a riot.

A bill that bans the wearing of masks during a riot or unlawful assembly and carries a maximum 10year prison sentence with a conviction of the offence became law today.

Bill C-309, a private member’s bill introduced by Conservative MP Blake Richards in 2011, passed third reading in the Senate on May 23 and was proclaimed law during a royal assent ceremony in the Senate this afternoon.

Richards, MP for Wild Rose, Alta., said the bill is meant to give police an added tool to prevent lawful protests from becoming violent riots, and that it will help police identify people who engage in vandalism or other illegal acts. The bill is something that police, municipal authorities and businesses hit hard by riots in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal and other cities in recent years, were asking for, according to Richards.

“The provisions of my bill are effective immediately, which means police of-

ficers across Canada now have access to these tools to protect the public from masked rioters,” Richards said in a statement being released today.

The bill creates a new Criminal Code offence that makes it illegal to wear a mask or otherwise conceal your identity during a riot or unlawful assembly. Exceptions can be made if someone can prove they have a “lawful excuse” for covering their face such as religious or medical reasons.

The bill originally proposed a penalty of up to five years, but the House of Commons justice committee amended it and doubled the penalty to up to 10 years in prison for committing the offence.

Richards noted in his statement how rare it is for a private member’s bill to become law and said that its final passage is the culmination of two years of work and a lot of consultation with police and business owners.

Bill comes into force immediately upon royal assent “We can all rest easier tonight knowing our

communities have been made safer with its passage,” said Richards.

The bill didn’t have unanimous support, and was opposed by some who are concerned about its effect on freedom of expression and privacy. Critics said the measures are unnecessary because the Criminal Code already includes a section about wearing disguises while committing a crime.

Civil liberties advocates argued the measures could create a chilling effect on free speech and that peaceful protesters can unintentionally find themselves involved in an unlawful assembly.

They also noted that there are legitimate reasons for wearing masks at protests; some may be worried about reprisals at work, for example, if sighted at a political protest.

“Any law that infringes upon civil liberties needs to be held to a test of absolute necessity, and I don’t think that test has been met in this instance,” said Michael Byers, a political scientist at the University of British Columbia and a board member of the B.C. Civil cont'd on pg. 15

Opinion/ Commentary Critical Reflections on the Endemic Problem of Big Cabinet in Ghana By: Kwabena Akuoko The cabinet of the government of the ruling New Democratic Congress (NDC) ranks in size compared to none other since Ghana returned to constitutional in 1992. Such large cabinet is contrary to President John Mahama’s campaign promise in the December 2012 general election.

The President’s appointment of many ministers and deputy ministers at the start of his current contested mandate approximately six months ago is a testament of a deep-seated problem in Ghanaian politics.

Irrespective of which party forms the government, ministerial and deputy ministerial positions are used to reward certain operatives within the governing party. What is different now is that the Mahama administration has stretched the limit of patronage appointments for the obvious reasons, to recompense certain top party members.

Since Ghana returned to constitutional rule, successive governments, whether NDC or New Patriotic Party (NPP) have consistently increased the number of ministers appointed, supposedly to respond to the complexity of democratic governance.

However, the increase more likely has to with party patronage and most importantly, to ensure party obedience. As a result, any effort to reduce the number of ministers appointed whenever, either NDC or NPP forms the government has been unsuccessful. Ghanaian presidents are in many respects, but unacceptably obligated to satisfy their political parties. They are also expected to satisfy different factions within their parties, which may have individuals considered to be too important and strategic to be appointed to cabinet.

Similarly, there may be a mounting pressure on the president to appoint certain number of individuals on the basis of gender or ethnicity.

Another reason for large cabinet is that ministerial appointments are commonly used as a means to ensure loyalty and hence it has become a tradition for the president to appoint loyal

individuals to the cabinet.

Those who are both loyal to the party in power and to president’s position as party leader are usually conferred with ministerial positions. The difference however is that the current NDC government has gone overboard with the appointments of 85 ministers. No wonder some sections of the public, civil society organizations and the opposition NPP have all voiced out their concerns against the current large cabinet.

Huge number of ministers in conjunction with deputy ministers is needless for a country the size and population of Ghana. The move will likely affect the country’s economy in a colossal way because the annual salary bill alone and other bonuses paid to too many ministers are substantial and that is something we should be concerned about. Big government is not only a drain to the national coffers, it is also usually ineffective. And given that ministers do not perform the real work that needs to be done in their respective ministries, there is no need for many of them and let alone deputy ministers anyway.

In democratic governance, ministers’ main responsibilities are geared towards driving policy, and their work is mainly done by career civil servants. Therefore, there is certainly no need for such a large cabinet. And the Mahama administration’s recent creation of new ministries with corresponding appointments of ministers and deputy ministers is nothing, but opportune and guarded approach aimed at appeasing certain stalwarts within the governing NDC. H i s t o r i c a l l y, the governing party has the tendency to make ministers and top party functionaries happy by giving them unparalleled incentives compared to others sectors. Ministers are traditionally given attractive housing and vehicle allowances at the expense of taxpayers.

And that is certainly one of the concerns many critics have about the huge number of ministers and deputy ministers in a country as small as Ghana

in geographic size and population. Another issue associated with a big cabinet such as the one currently in place in Ghana is that it often leads to ministerial inefficiencies and duplication of responsibilities.

Similarly, it often results in internal rivalry among different ministers to get the president’s attention at neglect of what really needs to be done to better serve the people. The preceding identified instances are not conducive to democratic governance.

A small cabinet congruent with the size or population of a given country allows the government the opportunity to restrict its roles to the important functions of the state.

Minimal cabinet leads to efficiency and quality governance. This is one further why reason the appointments of a huge number of ministers is unwarranted in Ghana.

The Mahama led NDC government could do itself a world of good the next time it reshuffles c a b i n e t b y m e rg i n g ministries in order to reduce the size of cabinet.

A small cabinet will allow the administration to limit itself to the roles of the country’s crucial functions and leave the other activities to the private sector.

Ghana in this regard can emulate Demark, a small social democratic nation that is famously known for its small government tradition.

At the time wellestablished democracies such as the United States, Canada, United Kingdom and others are championing for smaller governments with minimal cabinet portfolios, Ghana as an emerging democracy is interestingly going the opposite direction.

Although in a parliamentary democratic tradition, such as what we have in Ghana right now, the party in power has the constitutional right to appoint ministers and other officials to run the government, but I hasten to opine that the Mahama administration has gone overboard by swelling his cabinet to 85 members.

Ghana’s second chance Kofi Annan writes A commodities boom, abundant foreign currency reserves, a democratically elected government and a new generation of educated young people endowed with huge potential.

Sounds familiar? I am actually describing the Ghana of 1957.

It is perhaps hard for young people today to imagine how optimistic my generation was at the time of independence.

Ours was one of the richest countries in Africa.

Like today, our raw materials were in high demand. Our national income was comparable to South Korea’s, and our prospects were among the best in what was then called the “underdeveloped world.”

Yet, 30 years later, South Korea’s annual income per head had risen to 10 times that of Ghana’s.

It eventually joined the OECD club of rich nations while we hope to become a “middle-income” country only by 2015.

Our early hopes were dashed by exclusionary politics, poor economic management and corruption, which created and perpetuated political instability.

Since then, we have steadily regained lost economic ground and become a stable democracy, organising a series of credible elections, leading to peaceful transfers of power. We can be proud of

credibility of the court.

What matters most is that its ruling be based on a thorough and fair examination of all the facts, leading to an impartial adjudication of the competing claims before the court.

Kofi Annan these achievements. Once again, Ghana’s youth is full of hope in the future.

With oil coming on stream, and strong exports of other commodities, our economy is growing at a vigorous eight per cent, and we have a second chance to raise Ghana into the world’s premier league within a generation.

The ball will soon be back in the politicians’ court.

The successful party must overcome the temptation to gloat, and the other side must avoid the urge to cast doubt on the court and its decision. Succumbing to either impulse would be reckless and unworthy of responsible democratic leaders, and indeed of the people of Ghana, whose prospects depend on continued p o l i t i c a l s t a b i l i t y.

Judgment debt saga: Martin Amidu wins case against Waterville The judges granted six of the 15 reliefs sought by the former AG and only stayed a verdict on parts of the reliefs concerning Mr Woyome because those were the subject of another matter yet to be determined at the High Court.

The Supreme Court has ordered Waterville Holdings Ltd. to return to the state monies it obtained illegally arising out of claims it brought against the state in 2009.

The court’s followed arguments before it by former Attorney General Martin Amidu that neither Waterville nor businessman Alfred Agbesie Woyome, who also obtained similar payments, had a valid contract with the state to warrant the payments.

The seven judges in a unanimous decision ruled that the monies paid Waterville in the judgement debt scandal were illegal

and must be refunded.

Amidu who described himself as a citizen vigilante went to court seeking reliefs for monies paid illegally to both Woyome and Waterville to be declared illegally paid and an order for same to be returned to the state.

The judges praised Martin Amidu for his relentless efforts in retrieving monies paid illegally to companies by the state.

The company is to cough up over €40m thanks to the suit filed by Martin Amidu against Waterville and Woyome.

2,201 fires recorded in first quarter of the year The Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) recorded 2,201 fire outbreaks nationwide between J a n u a r y a n d A p r i l t h i s y e a r.

Those fire outbreaks claimed the lives of 18 people, injured 19 and caused damage to properties estimated at GHc16 million.

Records made available to the Daily Graphic by the GNFS indicate that 773 of the fires were domestic, 232 vehicular, 204 electrical installations, 175 commercial, 38 institutional, 453 bush fires, while the remaining 249 were from other causes.

The Brong Ahafo Region recorded the highest number of fire outbreaks of 378, followed by the Greater Accra Region with 330 fire outbreaks, while the Ashanti Region registered 314 fire outbreaks.

Some of the major fire outbreaks recorded this year occurred at the Kantamanto Market, the Makola Number Two Market, the Makola Shopping Mall, the Agbogbloshie Market and the Kumasi Magazine.

Giving details of the fire outbreaks, the Deputy Public Relations Officer of the GNFS, Mr Prince Billy Anaglate, said several measures had been adopted by the service and the district, municipal and metropolitan assemblies to ensure that the fire outbreaks were reduced.

As part of the measures, he said, the assemblies would provide Fire Service posts at all the markets.

He said fire personnel had been deployed to the various markets to monitor and ensure that the markets were safe during and after market hours.

He indicated that water hydrants should be made available at the markets, including underground water, so that the GNFS could have access to water when the need arose.

Bob Rae quits as MP in ‘very emotional’ decision The former interim Liberal leader says he wants to devote his time to First Nations issues Bob Rae, who served as interim Liberal leader following the party’s disastrous showing in the 2011 election, is stepping down as an MP. Rae told his Liberal colleagues of his decision d u r i n g We d n e s d a y ’s party caucus meeting, an announcement that was met with tears and applause, according to sources.

Rae recently accepted the

role of chief negotiator for First Nations in talks with the Ontario government about development of the Ring of Fire, and is to tour the nine Matawa communities in the mining and resourcerich area of Northern Ontario this summer.

Rae is a former NDP premier of the province.

At a news conference with Liberal Leader Justin Trudeau in the foyer of the House of Commons, Rae said that work as a lawyer and mediator was taking more and more of his time and he felt he needed to focus on his role with the

“This is not about money, this is about time. I’m not being paid for my work in the North,” Rae said, adding that his decision was about, “How can I effectively serve the interests of the people I’ve been asked to serve?

He continued, “I’m quite confident that Mr. Trudeau will become the prime minister of Canada,” Rae said.

Canadian passports to cost more in 2013 O T TAWA — T h e cost of getting a Canadian passport is going up significantly i n t h e n e w y e a r.

They won because they refused to become discouraged by their defeats.”-B. C. Forbes The month of June every year brings to an end the academic year in most countries around the world. This special month of the year also marks ‘Father ’s Day’ which is also celebrated worldwide. Let me use this opportunity to congratulate fathers throughout the world.

I also appeal to all families to ‘Let Fathers be Fathers!’ Now let’s briefly look at June as the month of graduation ceremonies.

Graduation is a benchmark of student achievement, and therefore it is NOT wrong to celebrate such success in grand style at every ‘growth’ on the educational ladder! June every year

Once again, I take this opportunity to congratulate all graduates of 2013. May the Good God be your guide as you move on to either further your studies or enter the workforce.

These were comments of a Ghanaian mother, Mrs Mary Adu-Donkor who over the few past years battled with adversity to study for her first degree in nursing this year! Mary is a product of Wesley Girls High School in Ghana and she never allows circumstances to overshadow her passion for further studies.

Though her family has been through harsh times of late, especially, with the sudden death of the eldest son, Prince, she was never discouraged from studying while taking care of her five children at the same time! Mary, in her initial effort to enroll in adult education as a nursing student, was advised by the Human Resources Department to take a short course in Early Child Education because that was what the Department felt she could do if she needed financial assistance from the government support to embark on a full-time study. She

therefore abandoned her decision to undertake a Nursing Degree.

Mary was an Arts Student and all that she studied was basic General Science. But realizing the importance of Nursing, not only as a reliable source of income but as an opportunity to save lives of her own family and other patients, she decided to prove her mettle as a scholar who could achieve everything with determination and prayers. She therefore enrolled in Burnamthorpe Collegiate Institute in Mississauga at a time when she did not even have a driver’s license and had to commute on public transits. Within a year, she was able to complete all her upgrade courses in Chemistry and Biology which enabled her to gain admission into the Seneca-York University Collaborative Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing.

Disaster struck in her first year when Prince (the eldest son at the age of 16) passed away. She had to postpone her studies for one semester.

Surprisingly, Mary was

able to catch up with her classmates after taking extra courses to make up for the semester she missed. For all the four years she was in school, Mary never trailed a subject to the astonishment of her lecturers. Her testimony to both adult women and the youth is that, there is nothing you cannot achieve if you have the will and the determination to succeed. However, in all this, she relied on God with constant prayers.

To d a y, M a r y h o l d s a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing with Special Honors from one of the best Universities in the world in spite of the fact that she is a mother of five children, a wife and a student at the same time. Ghanaian News was present at York Convocation 2013 where Mary among others was awarded her degree in Nursing on June 7.

Congratulations! Mary, you are an inspiration to all mothers and young ladies in our community who strive to achieve higher academic pursuits.

Black lawyers racially profiled when librarian asked for ID, court rule TORONTO -- Two black lawyers were correctly found to be victims of racial profiling when an administrator at a lawyersonly lounge at a courthouse asked them to identify themselves, Ontario’s top court ruled Thursday.

In a rare decision on racial profiling that does not involve law-enforcement officials, the court reinstated a human-rights tribunal ruling that found discrimination against the lawyers and their black articling student.

“The Court of Appeal decision in this case is important to the emerging jurisprudence on racial profiling from which lawyers and other black professionals are not immune,” lawyer Selwyn Pieters said.

The incident occurred five years ago when Toronto-based lawyer Pieters, who has dreadlocks, his colleague Brian Noble and a student were at a

proceeding at courthouse in Brampton, Ont. The trio went to the lounge run by the Peel Law Association during a break.

Association policy bars anyone other than lawyers or law students from the facility.

Evidence before the Human Rights Tribunal of Ontario was that the woman in charge of the lounge, Melissa Firth, asked the ungowned trio to identify themselves as lawyers or law students.

She asked no one else.

Among other things, Firth maintained she only questioned the three men because they were seated closest to the door.

The tribunal found Firth’s explanation that she knew everyone else in the lounge to be false, and questioned her credibility.

It accepted evidence she was “aggressive” in challenging the trio and “blunt and demanding” in contrast to her usual approach.

The tribunal decided Firth failed completely to offer a credible non-discriminatory explanation for her decision to challenge the three black men.

The upper court reinstated the $2,000 tribunal award The tribunal awarded to the trio. It also awarded $2,000 to each of the three for injury to dignity.

However, the Divisional Court overturned the decision, ruling the tribunal made several errors in concluding the men had been discriminated against. It found the decision unreasonable.

In quashing the Divisional Court ruling, the Appeal Court found the tribunal chairman had provided “clear, intelligible reasons” to explain his decision, which was reasonable.

“The Divisional Court erred in concluding that it did not,” the Appeal Court said.

New rules let customers cancel phone contracts without penalty after two years

But the Canadian Radiotelevision and Telecommunications Commission didn’t go as far as an outright ban on the controversial three-year contracts that are so widely hated by many Canadians.

Instead, customers will only have to pay the remaining value of the device subsidy if they opt out of their contracts after two years. That means if a customer bought a $600 phone for $99 on a three-year plan, they only have to pay the remaining balance on the device itself to get out of the contract early.

“We didn’t focus on the length of the contract, we focused on the economic relation,” CRTC chairman Jean-Pierre Blais said in an interview.

“So, in effect, it’s equivalent to those asking for a ban of a three-year contract without us actually banning three-year contracts, because what we’re saying is the contract’s amortization period can only be for a maximum period of 24 months.”

Berlusconi convicted in sex-for-hire trial final MILAN, Italy -- A Milan court on Monday convicted former Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi of paying for sex with an underage prostitute during infamous “bunga bunga” parties at his villa and then using his influence to try to cover it up.

Berlusconi, 76, was sentenced to seven years in prison and barred from public office for life -- a sentence that could mean the end of his two-decade political career. However, there are two more levels of appeal before the sentence would become final, a process that can take months.

Berlusconi holds no official post in the current Italian government, but remains influential in the uneasy cross-party coalition that emerged after inconclusive February elections.

Both he and the Moroccan woman at the centre of the scandal have denied ever having sex.

His lawyer, Niccolo Ghedini, immediately announced an appeal and said the sentence was as expected as it was unjust.

“This is beyond reality,” Ghedini told reporters outside the courthouse.

The sentence was even stiffer than the six-year prison term and lifetime ban on public office that prosecutors had originally requested.

“I’m calm because I’ve been saying for three years that this trial should never have taken place here,” Ghedini said.

The charges against the billionaire media mogul stem from the “bunga bunga” parties in 2010 at his mansion near Milan, where he wined and dined beautiful young women while he was premier. He says the dinner parties were elegant soirees; prosecutors say they were sex-fueled parties that women were paid to attend.

Neither Berlusconi nor the woman at the centre of the case, Karima elMahroug, better known by her nickname Ruby, have testified in this trial.

El-Mahroug was called by the defence but failed to show on a couple of occasions, delaying the trial. Berlusconi’s team eventually dropped her from the witness list.

El-Mahroug did testify in the separate trial of three Berlusconi aides charged with procuring prostitutes for the parties. She told that court that Berlusconi’s disco featured aspiring showgirls dressed as sexy nuns and nurses performing striptease acts, and that one woman even dressed up as President Barack Obama.

Berlusconi was not in court on Monday. The three female judges deliberated for more than seven hours before delivering their verdict.

Their written explanations for arriving at the verdict will be submitted in the next few weeks.

Berlusconi frequently has railed against Milan prosecutors and judges, accusing them of mounting politically motivated cases against him.

El-Mahroug, now 20, said in the other trial that she attended about a half-dozen parties at Berlusconi’s villa, and that after each, Berlusconi handed her an envelope with up to 3,000 euros ($3,900). She said she later received 30,000 euros cash from the thenpremier paid through an intermediary -- money that she told Berlusconi she wanted to use to open a beauty salon, despite having no formal training.

She was 17 at the time of the alleged encounters but passed herself off as being 24. She also claimed she was related to thenEgyptian President Hosni Mubarak. Berlusconi’s lawyers argued that he -thinking el-Mahroug was indeed Mubarak’s niece -called police after she was detained in a bid to avoid a diplomatic incident.

Some Benefits and Problems Associated with Dual Citizenship – The Ghanaian example Dual citizenship is now a reality in Ghana. The citizenship Act 2000 allows a citizen of Ghana to hold the citizenship of any other country in addition to his or her Ghanaian citizenship.

Dual citizenship confers several rights and privileges on the holder.

It gives the individuals the right to obtain passports from either country of citizenship. A Ghanaian dual citizenship holder will be entitled to apply for a Ghanaian passport despite the fact he or she might be holding the passport o f a n o t h e r c o u n t r y.

provided they enter Ghana on a Ghanaian passport and not on a foreign passport. It should however be noted that a dual citizenship holder can be charged with an offence if he uses two passports interchangeably and the Immigration is of the view that it is being done to deceive an immigration officer.

Dual citizenship could, in effect, be viewed as a simplified procedure for individuals to visit former homelands for extended periods of time.

For example, Ghanaians holding dual citizenship are permitted to remain in Ghana without limitation

Dual citizenship also creates the opportunity to pursue employment opportunities in either country of nationality.

Thus, by virtue of being a citizen of the countries, the dual citizenship holder would be allowed to work in the countries without work permit. He

Despite the foregoing advantages, dual citizenship has its own problems of which “divided loyalty’ is one.

That the person holding dual nationality would contribute fairly and equally to the countries of his nationality by way of national service, taxation and in some other respects is an unrealistic and unreasonable expectation.

Also, some domestic legal issues such as custody and inheritance disputes could be complicated when a dual national is involved as the laws of the countries of nationality might be in conflict with each other.

The association also said there will be “major technology development and costs associated with implementing and complying with the new code.”

But the news that wireless customers will be able to cancel their contracts after two years without any extra penalties was welcomed by at least one consumer group.

“The wireless code has rules to help wireless customers where it counts — the bottom line,” John Lawford of the Public Interest Advocacy Centre said in a statement.

“It also makes it easier to switch companies because those costs are

limited and are clear.”

The ability to walk away from a wireless agreement after two years is one of several provisions aimed at appeasing consumers in the CRTC’s new set of national standards for the content and clarity of cellphone contracts.

The CRTC is also capping extra data charges at $50 per month and international data roaming charges at $100 per month to avoid huge, surprise bills.

The regulator will require providers to allow customers to unlock their devices after 90 days, or immediately if they pay the full amount of the device.

Customers will be allowed to return their cellphones within 15 days and specified usage limits if they’re unhappy with their service and they will also be able to accept or decline any changes to two-year contracts.

The regulator is also requiring companies to produce contracts that are easy to read and understand.

The code — which all service providers in Canada will have to abide by — will apply to new wireless contracts starting Dec. 2.

Treasury Board President Tony Clement said it’s “perfectly reasonable” for the federal government to step in with new regulations for cellphone companies.

“Even though I’m a free enterpriser, I know that you’re dealing with a situation where you have three or four big carriers who rule the roost,” Clement said.

“I think it’s perfectly reasonable to stand up for the consumer and t h a t ’s e x a c t l y w h a t the CRTC is doing.”

Corruption galore at Passport Office The acquisition of passports in Ghana has been characterized by unpalatable circumstances f o r s o m e t i m e n o w.

Anytime the issue crops up, authorities quickly address it temporarily to avoid publicity.

After paying the monies at the banks, applicants are asked to forward their completed forms to the Passports Office in Accra with the assurance that the processing would be done smoothly.

Passport forms are now acquired from some banks such as Ecobank, ADB and others at a fee of GH¢50 for normal processing and GH¢100 for express processing.

But at the Passports Office, applicants find themselves in a totally different world. ‘Connection agents’ otherwise referred to as ‘goro’ or errand

guys have invaded the stores opposite the Passports Office.

People, who troop to the place to have their passport forms filled for fear of committing mistakes, are made to pay GH¢10.00 by the ‘goro’ boys, who also endorse the forms as witnesses.

They also inquire from applicants whether they have been referred to the place by certain influential people.

An undercover entry by the paper into the Passports Office revealed pockets of applicants and connection agents at the premises.

An official told this reporter that one of the machines, which used to process the passports, had developed a fault and was being repaired.

There were people loitering on the ground and first floors of the office building.

At 11.06 am, an official at the Client Services Unit told this reporter that “we are not receiving passports today. If you want to tender any, you have to go to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs near Tema Station in Accra.�

But the reporter later learnt from a top official that the submission of applications was supposed to stop at 12.00 pm since one of the machines was faulty.

One of the applicants told this reporter that “Just recently, applicants could acquire their passports in a matter of three days after submitting them but now it takes close to three months to get it. Unless you know somebody here, forget it.�

Applicants, as a result of the broken down equipment, have to mobilize between GH¢150 and GH¢200 to be given to the connection men, who then pressurize their cohorts working at the office to process their passports. “I think officials at the Passport Office cannot put a stop to this mess. They only act as if they are innocent only to allow the situation to fester again after a short period. The minister of Interior must stop these shameful and corrupt activities. Ghana’s economy grows by 6.7 per cent Ghana’s economy grew year on year by 6.7 per cent in the first quarter of 2013, compared to 10.3 per cent for the same period in 2012, Dr Philomena Nyarko, acting Government Statistician has said.

Dr Nyako told the GNA in Accra that, on quarter- on-quarter basis, the value of goods and services produced in the first quarter of 2013 declined by 3.1 per cent.

She said all the major sectors fell during the period; agriculture dropped by 0.2 per cent, industry dipped by 2.3 per cent while services declined by one per cent.

She said services recorded the highest growth of 12 per cent, agriculture registered a growth rate of 1.1 per cent, and industry, on the other hand, declined by 0.8 per cent.

Dr Nyako said: “Economic activity in the crops and cocoa and

forestry industry recorded negative growth of 4.9 per cent and 5 per cent respectively during the first quarter of 2013.

She said in the industry s e c t o r, m i n i n g a n d quarrying recorded 1.4 per cent growth while construction fell to negative growth of 6.1 per cent.

Dr Nyarko said manufacturing and water also recorded a negative growth rate of 1.5 per cent and 6.8

per cent respectively.

She said in the services sector, activities that showed strong growth were public administration, 14 per cent, health 6.1 per cent and other personal services, 10 per cent.

There were, however, a decline in financial and insurance activities of 4.8 per cent, information and communication 1.5 per cent and hotel and restaurant 3.6 per cent, Dr Nyarko said. GNA

Illiteracy poses problems for agric sector – Census In the 2010 PHC, data collated on agricultural activities in the country showed that the population of agricultural households in 2010 was 13,366,340 and accounted for 54.2 per cent of the total population.

For the purpose of the census, an agricultural household was defined as where, at least, one person in the household was engaged in any type of farming activity, be it crop farming, tree growing, livestock rearing and fish farming.

BUSINESS Sustained Employment and Financial Stability

I worked for a global giant in gold mining in Toronto between 2008-2010 and 3 years afterwards many employees have been laid off or have been sacked for reasons ranging from performance, lack of fit in teams or department downsize to changes in human resources plans. Over a period of 5 years, there has been changes in leadership from the CEO to the least in the organization which suggest to me that no one in one of the highly acclaimed best employer in Canada is protected from laid off or redundancy. How then do we protect ourselves from losing our sustained cashflow from employment?

One of the options which I elaborated in my article some months ago was to consider self-employment or alternative income to be able to sustain the family during these challenging times. It appears the above trend has become the rule rather than exception especially in the Toronto and the GTA environs.

A reader of the Ghanaian News recently responded to my previous article entitled “SelfEmployment: A Career Option”, asking me for an advice on what steps to take to be able to start his own business. The basis for his decision was that he was not happy with his current job. He indicated there was tremendous work related pressure, there was no job security since their company is a takeover candidate by another mega company, hence he suspect he might loose his managerial role when the to-be parent company embark on an organizational restructuring sooner or later. He has over 15 years managerial experience in various industries in Canada & USA, a mortgage and other investments. With these resources, he thinks he has the financial “muscle” to enable him to quit his current job and start a franchise business

I asked him which area of activity he might choose or think best to venture in?. What was his present area of activity or opportunity/ market that he would like to offer services or products? Apparently, he had not thought about these basic questions yet but wanted to know where (areas for business opportunities); and how to start a new enterprise?

- What products or services? On what basis was this arrived at? On the basis of a detailed market survey, or general perception, hearsay or competitive advantage?

This will require a detailed assessment of the current market, competition, pricing, What advantage(s) of your product or services will the buyer gain?

Will this be sustainable?

I was a little baffled and wasn’t sure if my dear reader was really thinking right? Or could it be that he does not want to share his trade secrets or business plans with me? I really didn’t want the details but just the high level stuff or plan before offering my candid advise. The world is full of surprises and the last couple of weeks; I had my fair share of those.

I could not conclude or understand the motives of my dear reader but guess that, this man was just looking for an escape “channel” from a job that is not challenging anymore, probably boring or that which he does not see any future in the years ahead. For me, that is not strong bases for wanting to start his or for that matter your own business. If one cannot manage the stress that comes with managerial roles in a corporate world, then I can safely argue that such personalities will not be able to survive the challenges of running their own business or a franchise.

- Has anyone failed in similar business before and are you in a position to take care of and overcome these initial challenges?

I think there is the need for us to challenge ourselves a bit more, think a little more, find a passion, utilize our talents in a positive way and consider other factors such as: A. Why do you want to start a new venture? If it is purely for earning more, although there is nothing wrong to wish to earn more, such efforts normally do not succeed.

If you are sick of the present job and want to be your own boss, this also might not be a convincing reason. A desire for accomplishment is a better reason. It is even better if you acquire some expertise, knowledge, skills, have a passion to utilize your talents and the talents of others to achieve your targets. Also worth considering are:

- Why do you think you will succeed? Analyze your qualities, both positive and negative with respect to your plans. Identify your strengths and weaknesses.

- What are your capabilities, expertise, present financial position, and mindset or confidence to take risks?

- Have you checked your cashflow and keeping adequate safety margin?

- Location of factory, office, and workforce required technical expertise to support your product or services?

- Time required for implementation of product or services?

How long it will take to get the set up ready and running? Time frame for testing some trial products or penetrating the market or breaking established competition?

- Ta x e s , o b t a i n i n g government clearance or required license to operate business?

- Consideration for distribution outlets for products and contractual agreements with trade partners?

- What are the possible reasons for which your plans can fail? If you cannot find any then it is more probable that you will not succeed B. There are no “accident benefits” as in a motor vehicle claim, so that absent some form of disability or supplementary medical coverage that the claimant has, the Occupier’s insurance or the Occupier, need pay nothing until either settlement or judgment. So you are entitled to make a claim without a deductible.

You can claim without limitation:

When you fall document, take pictures, complain immediately to the person in charge where it happened. Find witnesses and get their name and numbers. If injuries are severe call an ambulance, go to a hospital, see a Doctor. The more evidence you have the better it is.

The best thing you can do is see a lawyer right away. Someone like myself or people in our office that understand your kind of case.

TALKING FINANCES Excuses vs. Results By: Gabriel Quayson, Toronto Everyone has a story about why they are where they are: They may range from abuse, neglect, unloved, lack of support, divorce, marriage, born poor, etc. The stories you tell yourself, will eventually be believed by you. If you feed yourself any story long enough, you will start to believe it, whether it’s true or not.

In a previous article, I discussed the conscious mind and the subconscious mind. A brief introductory about the mind will set the state for this article. We have two minds, a conscious and the subconscious.

The conscious mind is the basis of our 5 senses (taste, see, hear, smell and touch). The conscious mind is known as our working memory and individuals have absolute control over it. One very important aspect of the conscious mind is that it has the power of rejection, ie: filter what comes in.

The subconscious on the other has no rejection power and will accept whatever the conscious has allowed to exist for a reasonable amount of time. The subconscious is further not aware of what is real and what is imagined. This means that whatever images (story or excuses) you hold in thoughts long enough, eventually the subconscious will believe

to be real and move into turning it into reality. Yet, our behaviour is driven by the subconscious mind. The information that has been allowed to stay in the conscious long enough becomes part of the programming of the subconscious, which then moves us habitually in a certain direction. The direction of movement will then determine the results that we get. The said result/achievement will never change until we do something different.

My challenge to you is that once you become an adult (18yrs old plus), you have to take matters into your own hands and design the best life for yourself regardless of your story. Your story should not be an inhibitor.

You should find the strength within your story to boost you. Your history or experience is a valuable resource to rely on as reference for wisdom.

Some people are chronically late for most appointments and their story is traffic. But everyone experiences traffic. The late arrivers have told the traffic story to themselves long enough that they do not need to find ways to work on that weakness. If they told a different story, their brain will start to look for a solution. A better story will be everyone

has the same traffic as me, why am I always late?

Dr. David Schwartz in his book entitled, The Magic of Thinking Big mentions that the major difference between successful and unsuccessful people is the ability to not make excuses. Schwartz claimed unsuccessful people are constantly

making excuses for why their life is stuck and tell a story of some set back years ago. The story gives them comfort as they accept the spectator role in their own life instead of a participant. Successful people on the other hand have realized that making excuses will not move them ahead in their path.

Successful people usually do not take no for an answer. They stop making excuses and take action.

Dr. Schwartz says that if you study successful people, they have the same options to make excuses but they do not make them. In his own life, he confirmed that he has been successful whenever he called out on his own

excuses and decided to go for it with a firm commitment. He realizes that in the instances he has been unsuccessful; he constructed stories why he would not be successful, made some really creative excuses and just stopped taking action. Ironically, the excuses seem so real that you begin believing in them. Solution? Ask yourself if you can develop an attitude of not making any excuses for areas in your life that need improvement or attention. Instead of making excuses, decide to go for it! This is because the Fante Kenkey cooked in these areas is wrapped in polyethylene films prior to cooking. The Food and Drugs Board (FDB) has determined that this exposes the Kenkey to the risk of Bisphenol A (BPA) and Phthalates.

These chemicals leach

into the kenkey because the polyethylene films with which the kenkey is wrapped were not designed for boiling temperature.

In a document signed by Dr. Stephen K. Opuni, Chief Executive, the Food and Drugs board said though the pellets used for the manufacture of the polyethylene films are food grade, these polyethylene films are meant for packaging of food under normal room temperature

only and not for cooking.

The FDB says it intends to embark upon the education of the general public on the dangers of cooking food wrapped in polyethylene films.

It says, it will liaise with the Mfantseman West and East Municipal Assemblies to educate the kenkey processors and sellers in the catchment area on the need to use plantain leaves only in packaging kenkey.Ghana Live.

Moving forward in life without any excuses is a somewhat scary proposition. We make excuses for all sorts of things and then rationalize why that is true for our situation. We do not question if the excuse has any basis or validity.

Canada’s Appalling Child Poverty 10 tidbits about Canadians we Rate: Shame of the Nation learned from StatsCan

Child poverty has become a major concern and never before has Canada, one of richest countries in the world ranked so poorly on children’s economic well being. A recent report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) underscores the increasing level of child poverty in Canada. Out of 17 peer nations surveyed, Canada unfortunately ranks 15th and one in seven Canadian children lives in poverty. OECD’s report confirms what anti-poverty advocate groups have been saying for years that child poverty should not exist in a nation as wealthy as Canada and such inexcusable problem is a classic case of poverty amidst plenty.

Unsurprisingly, the Conference Board, which is a non-partisan and non-profit organization dedicated to researching and analyzing economic trends nationally, has spoken out against the skyrocketing rate of the number of Canadian children that live in poverty. Conference Board’s concern about the problem reflects the need for public policy directions that comprehensively support struggling working families with children.

Child poverty has been recognized as a fundamental problem for almost two and a half decades now, yet successive federal governments have only paid lip services to addressing it. If Canada had in the past paid attention and done the right thing, the problem would have been eradicated instead of exacerbating.

Parliament in 1989 unanimously passed a Resolution to eliminate the problem in 2000, but is to come to fruition. The 1989 Resolution gained some initial success, and the rate of poverty among Canadian children dropped from its previous 15.8 percent to 12.8 in the mid-1990s. Since then however, the rate has increased quite considerably to its current level of 15.1 percent, reversing the earlier progress made. Canada now occupies a shameful 15 th position among 17 OECD countries. Only Italy and the United States are worse than Canada among the Group of 8 richest nations when it comes to child poverty.

Even with this hard evidence of abysmal record, many Canadians mistakenly assume that just because Canada is adjudged among the eight richest nations in the world, our country does not have poverty related issues.

Unfortunately however, child poverty is unacceptably a chronic problem and the sad truth is that a significant number of children and their families live in abject poverty in the midst of plenty in Canada. The country’s appalling child poverty rate is a shame of the nation and it is about time all levels of government, regardless of their ideological leanings took profound steps to address the problem once and for all.

Other jurisdictions have over the years taken practical and well measured steps to address the problem

and there is no reason why Canada cannot do the same for the sake of our children’s future. In 1999, a decade after Canada had resolved but failed to address the problem, the United Kingdom for instance set out a 20-year ambitious plan to end poverty among its children through a series of integrated social and economic policies. The plan included strengthening children’s early learning, affordable housing for poor families, comprehensive health services as well as raising the minimum wage to enhance the existing child benefits for families.

The original target according to the plan was to curtail the problem by half by 2010, and eradicate it by the year 2020.

Initially, United Kingdom made great progress reducing the child poverty rate from 16.2 percent in 2000 to 10.1 in the mid-2000s. But unfortunately, the rate fairly rose in the late 2000s mainly as a result of its devastating financial crisis during the same period. Canada unlike United Kingdom, Italy or the United States and other countries did not suffer any financial crisis and as such, there is no reason for our country to have the current appalling child poverty record.

The question is when will Canada realize that the present rate of child poverty is not only abysmal, but shameful and our children deserve to be protected from undesirable economic conditions? As a nation we have to have the willingness to significantly reduce child poverty and eventually eradicate it completely. What seems to be Canada’s lackadaisical attitude towards child poverty is backed by the United Nations International Children Emergency Fund’s (UNICEF) well documented view on the subject.

U N I C E F ’s a n a l y s i s a n d comparison of the issue of poverty among children in the world’s industrialized nations for instance concludes that some rich countries unconsciously accept higher levels of child poverty not that they cannot afford to eradicate it, but because of policy and the lack of priority for children’s wellbeing in government budgets. And unfortunately, the problem shows up in higher rates years later.

Thus, the ramifications of child poverty in the final analysis show up in higher social costs and dimmed economic prosperity for a nation as a whole.

Child poverty rate in Canada is substantially and shamefully higher among its 17 peer nations because the problem has been neglected far too long. Ottawa and its provincial and territorial counterparts have to step up, prioritize and address the problem in their budgetary plans. After all, sound public investment in children in the way of early intervention and through sound social programs is essential and hence more effective anti-poverty measures must be developed to address the problem. After all, investment in children is simply about investing in a nation’s future best interests.

Employment rates were highest in Yukon, N.W.T. and the Prairies Statistics Canada released the second batch of figures Wednesday from its voluntary National Household S u r v e y, l o o k i n g a t l a b o u r, e d u c a t i o n , workplace, commuting, work language and mobility and migration.

64.8 per cent of workingage women now have a post-secondary education, compared with 63.4 per cent of men — the first time the percentage for women has bypassed that for men.

Women accounted for 59 per cent of Canadians aged 25 to 34 with a university degree, compared with 47.3 per cent of their 55- to 64-year-old counterparts.

Employment data The most common occupations for women in 2011: retail salesperson; administrative assistant; registered nurse; cashier; schoolteacher. The most common occupations for men: retail salesperson; truck driver; retail and wholesale manager; c a r p e n t e r ; j a n i t o r,

caretaker and building superintendent.

Canada had more than three million workers aged 55 and over in 2011, comprising 18.7 per cent of total employment, compared with 15.5 per cent in 2006.

Employment rates were highest in Yukon (69.7 per cent), N.W.T. (66.8 per cent) and the Prairies, particularly Alberta (69 per cent) and Saskatchewan (65.1 per cent). Rates were lowest in Newfoundland and Labrador (50.7 per cent) and Nunavut (52.1 per cent).

Roughly 15.4 million Canadians said they commute to work each day, with three out of four driving a vehicle and just 5.6 per cent making the trip as passengers. The data also said 1.1 million people work from home.

Public transit was used by 12 per cent of commuters, up from 11 per cent in 2006. Of those, 63.5 per cent took a bus, 25 per cent rode the

subway or elevated-rail train, 11.2 per cent took light-rail transit, streetcar or commuter train, and 0.3 per cent travelled by ferry.

About 880,000 commuters, or 5.7 per cent, reported walking to work each day, while only 201,800 people —1.3 per cent — rode a bicycle, the same percentage as in 2006.

Laurent Blanchard sworn in as interim mayor of Montreal Laurent Blanchard was sworn in as mayor of Montreal Tuesday, just hours after after his election to the post in a tight vote by city council.

Blanchard, 61, a former Vision Montréal member and the head of the city’s executive committee, was elected by secret ballot, beating out Harout Chitilian 30 votes to 28.

Deputy Mayor Jane Cowell-Poitras was a distant third, with three votes.

Two other contenders, St-Laurent borough mayor Alan DeSousa and Rosemont la-Petite-Patrie borough mayor François Croteau, withdrew their candidacy just before council was set to vote.

What’s your advice for Montreal’s mayor?

“I hope everyone rallies around the municipal council’s decision,” said Blanchard immediately after the results were announced. “What’s ahead, for me in particular, is a great challenge.”

“It’s also breathtaking, exhilarating, scary. However, I can console myself with the reminder it’s only for four months.”

Thanking his wife Claudine, his son and his sisters in the moments after his swearing-in in the Hall of Honour at Montreal city hall, Blanchard’s voice caught in his throat, and he struggled briefly for composure.

“I thank you for your confidence in me,” he told his colleagues on council, the city manager and the entire civil service — promising to do his job for the next several months with stability, integrity and continuity.

Blanchard said he is recommending that Projet Montréal councillor Josée Duplessis the executivecommittee member responsible for sustainable development, the environment and parks replace him as the head of that committee.

“She is known for her leadership and spirit of collaboration with her fellow colleagues,” Blanchard said.

That recommendation must be approved by city council.

Blanchard said he will delegate other files he is now in charge of to other sitting members of the committee.

“The current members of the executive committee are extremely competent and know their dossiers very well, which is crucial, as the city must continue to function,” he said.

Shortly after the results of the vote were announced this morning, former speaker Harout Chitilian congratulated the new mayor for having done a “remarkable job” and promised to work with him.

(Fathers’ Day message I shared on June 16, 2013) God created the earth, and also the first man and woman in His own image. God’s image in man did not mean the Lord has a physical body like ours but rather refers to His intelligence, emotion and will; with these faculties, man and woman could relate to God and the physical world out of a free will.

Genesis 1: 26-29 states the Lord’s purpose in creating Adam and Eve with the ability to be fruitful and multiply, fill the earth, and rule over the rest of creation on earth. Before Eve was

created, Adam had been given the responsibility of caring for the Garden of Eden where the Lord placed him: “Then the LORD God took the man and put him in the garden of Eden to tend and keep it.”(Genesis 2:15 NKJV) Unfortunately before the couple had their first child, the first couple had disobeyed God’s command and chosen to live independently of God’s will and purpose for them. The sin nature that adversely affected the lives of Adam and Eve also marred God’s image in them and all humanity.

The curse of sin was terrible for the descendants of Cain were all evil, for they lived as if there was no God. Adam and Eve’s experience with the loss of Abel, and the rebellion of Cain and his descendants, no doubt made the first couple raise Seth to be a godly man.

Seth also instilled the fear of God in his son Enosh, therefore during his life time, “Men began to call upon the name of the Lord.” (Genesis 4:25 NKJV) Years later, the descendants of Cain and Seth intermarried and the result of the life of humanity was very disappointing to the Lord: “Then the LORD saw that

the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every intent of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually. And the LORD was sorry that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved in His heart. So the LORD said, “I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth, both man and beast, creeping thing and birds of the air, for I am sorry that I have made them.” (Gen 6:5-7 NKJV) The Bible speaks of God almost annihilating the entire human race through a world-wide flood, sparing only Noah, his wife, his three sons and their wives.

When Adam and Eve disobeyed God’s word, His image in them was

marred and all humanity including us, acquired their sinful nature. David declared, “Behold, I was brought forth in iniquity, and in sin my mother conceived me.” (Psalm 51:5 NKJV) Solomon also wrote: “For there is not a just man on earth who does good and does not sin.” (Ecclesiastes 7:20 NKJV) Although the story of humanity since Adam’s fall had been depressing, the good news is that knowing man would fail, God started working for the redemption of humanity before evil entered the lives of Adam and Eve. (Revelation 13:8 NKJV) He also disrupted the unholy alliance between

man and Satan. “And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your seed and her Seed; He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel.” (Genesis 3:15NKJV) That was the first promise of a Deliverer from God who would be born of a woman (a virgin) to destroy the power of sin.

The battle for the souls of humanity was won at Calvary when the Son of God spiritually defeated Satan when Christ was raised from the dead, after His crucifixion. “But when the fullness of the time had come, God sent forth His Son, born of a woman, born under

the law, to redeem those who were under the law, that we might receive the adoption as sons. And because you are sons, God has sent forth the Spirit of His Son into your hearts, crying out, “Abba, Father!” Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.” (Gal 4:4-7 NKJV) Since then all those who have trusted in Christ though not perfect, have been set free from the power of sin the work of Christ. The Apostle Paul wrote: “For sin shall not have dominion over you, for you are not under law but under grace.”

Being a successful father requires a lot of work, patience and the grace of God. Why did great men of God such as Eli, the High Priest, Samuel the Prophet, and David the greatest King of Israel, failed as fathers?

Reading 1 Samuel 3:1113: 1 Samuel 8:1-5 and 2 Samuel 15, one comes to the conclusion that these great men failed to be in the lives of their children while they were young.

They might have thought

us to show them how to love God and survive in our complex world out there full of uncertainties.

They need us to show them how to control their emotions, how to make good decisions, and how to apply the knowledge they acquire to serve their generation. As I bring this message to an end I would like to appeal to married couples to consider the welfare of their children before the seek divorce. No matter what the world today think of the institution of the family as God planned it; any disruption leads to terrible consequences for children, the for society and the next generation.

Frankly Speaking President Mahama should watch his utterances and behave Presidentially

Baffoe, Winnipeg, MB Ghana is going through very trying moments in its history. Within a sea of confusion, violence, social and political mayhem on the continent of Africa, Ghana has stood tall and resisted all the forces of evil that have sought to plunge the country into darkness and upheaval. Most of the violence and instability that have engulfed most African countries have been around politics and the thorny process for gaining political power: elections! From Zimbabwe, Kenya, Uganda, the Congos, Nigeria, Ivory Coast, Liberia to Sierra Leone, elections for political office have plunged most African nations into total chaos and violence.

The violence has been driven by sheer greed and extreme lust for power to control, manipulate and steal the resources of nations. In their quest for political power which will offer them the means to manipulate and steal the resources of nations, political “leaders” (if they qualify to be described as such) have gone to extreme lengths to incite violence which have resulted in civil wars, most of whom have lasted for years (think of Uganda, the Congos, Rwanda, Liberia, Ivory Coast and Sierra Leone). Millions of people have died as a result of these spates of electoral violence. In other places like Kenya, a few weeks of electoralrelated violence led to the death and maiming of tens of thousands of people and the destruction of property worth in unimaginable values.

It should be borne in mind

that most of these spates of electoral violence and social upheavals could have been avoided and the lives of all these victims (mostly innocent ones) could have been spared if those so-called political leaders who incited and fanned the flames of hatred and destruction had been circumspect in their utterances and their behaviors. But no! because their personal quest for power, greed and selfishness, they will stop at nothing to unleash their various countries and societies into violence.

At the end of all the violence, innocent people would have died and the irresponsible “leaders” who incited the violence live to enjoy the booty, the spoils from their actions.

Despite all that have happened on the African continent over the past fifty years around political violence, Ghana has stood out: tall, proud and shinning, an almost lone star shinning in an African ocean of political violence. The international community h a s n o t e d G h a n a ’s shinning example and they love to hold us out to others to emulate. In the context of this therefore, Ghanaians love to pride themselves as non-violent people who prefer to settle their differences through talk, talk and talk even if

those talk, talk sometimes involve irresponsible talk and trash.

Since the year 1991, at the end of a long period of brutal military rule, Ghana has gone through as many as six national Parliamentary and Presidential elections.

Most of these elections have been held in periods of high tension and drama. The losers of some of these elections have not been happy, but despite all their protests and complaints, the losers have never resorted to violence or incited their followers and others to engage in violence. This is really commendable!

It was in this vein and spirit of using talk, talk and discussion to resolve electoral disputes that the current Opposition Political Party in Ghana, the New Patriotic Party decided to use the courts, established legal means mandated by the Constitution of the country, to seek redress to what they perceived as sheer electoral malpractices during the last elections in 2012 which saw the declaration of current President John Dramani Mahama as President.

Most well-meaning Ghanaians as well as the international community have hailed the action of the New Patriotic Party and its leaders in using non-violent legal means to seek redress to their electoral grievances. The Supreme Court of the Republic of Ghana has therefore been hearing this complex electoral petition since the middle of April and it is on-going.

The historic event is being telecast and broadcast live to the nation and the

general public seems to be enjoying the spectacle.

We s h o u l d e x p e c t therefore that ALL actors in this drama, political leaders and their supporters, as well as the general Ghanaian population will all exercise the maximum restraint and allow the legal process to take its course. It behoves more on the political leaders to behave responsibly, be very guarded and circumspect in their utterances to avoid instigating and provoking any violence when the aggrieved parties have decided not to use violence to resolve their grievances.

And among all these political leaders we expect the one that has, in the meantime, being declared President and Father of the Nation to be the one observing all the rules of caution and appealing to his followers to do the same. In this case I am referring to the current President, John Dramani Mahama, who is the subject of this dispute and electoral challenge to behave responsibly and be very careful not to do or say anything that will overturn the relative peace the country is enjoying so far despite the bitter grievance of the losing parties in the elections of December 2012.

I t i s h o w e v e r, v e r y disturbing to note that President Mahama’s utterances since the electoral court challenge started have been very provocative, and if we may stretch to add, quite irresponsible. President Mahama has been uttering very provocative statements at the least opportunity on the on-

going electoral disputes.

A few examples: He has made statements (on more than two occasions) to the effect that he believes quite strongly that the Supreme Court will rule in his favour. Where did he get that information from? This amounts to contempt of the current legal proceedings and the President of the Supreme Court panel had had reason to issue strong warnings to people making unguarded statements on the ongoing case to watch their words and utterances.

As recently as the third week of June, 2013, President Mahama again declared publicly at a religious gathering at Mamfe-Akuapem in the Eastern Region that no-one can take the Presidency from him because his “victory” in the last election was ordained by God. This, to me, is irresponsible and provocative.

I would like to caution

President Mahama that until his “victory” is confirmed after the Supreme Court hearings, he is only in a care-taker position. The NPP could have filed an injunction restraining him from taking office until the electoral dispute is settled but they chose not to. They decided to allow him to take care of the country’s business while the dispute goes through the legal resolution process. The best he can do is to reciprocate this noble gesture and be guarded in his statements and public utterances. As we say in political parlance, he should behave and talk “Presidentially” for now!! Loose talk and irresponsible provocative statements would certainly not help the cause of peace and stability for Ghana.

Enough lessons abound on the African continent for the President to learn from. We are watching!!!

Isofoton will not seek review Spanish firm Isofoton SA which has been ordered by the Supreme Court of Ghana to refund about $400,000 to the state, says they will not seek a review of the court’s decision though they consider the ruling as an unjust.

Though it accepts the verdict of the Supreme Court, the company says it disagrees with it and will fight on till justice is done them, giving strong indication that its lawyers have a different strategy to seek for justice following the ruling.

On Friday, the Supreme Court ordered Isofoton to refund some $325,472 illegally paid them by the state in a case brought against the company by former AttorneyGeneral and Minister of Justice Martin Amidu.

The Court by a unanimous decision ruled that the company’s contract with government was not approved by Parliament hence it is null and void.

The Spanish firm was seeking $1.3 million

judgement debt over claims their contract was illegally terminated by the erstwhile Kufuor government after being contracted to supply Solar powered pump for irrigation.

They have described the ruling as unfair as well as saying they will not pay the money because government owes them 1.3 million dollars.

Workplace Bullying is equally harmful and dangerous

Responsible Fathers in a Changing World

I wish to return to the issue of harassment and bullying at the workplace that I discussed a year ago because it seems to be coming back unto the news headlines. Bullying is usually seen as acts or verbal comments that could ‘mentally’ hurt or isolate a person in the workplace. Sometimes, bullying can involve negative physical contact as well. Bullying usually involves repeated incidents or a pattern of behaviour that is intended to intimidate, offend, degrade or humiliate a particular person or group of people. It has also been described as the assertion of power through aggression.

There is a lot of talk and expression of concern and disgust at bullying in schools and off campus including cyber bullying. This mostly involves youth. But what is not being talked about or being ignored is another very dangerous and disturbing form of bullying, directed at adults. This is the arena of “work-place bullying”.

Work place bullying or Mobbing unlike childhood bullying, is the tendency of individuals or groups to use persistent aggressive or unreasonable behavior against a co-worker or subordinate. Workplace bullying can include such tactics as verbal, nonverbal, psychological, physical abuse and humiliation. This type of aggression is particularly difficult because, unlike the typical forms of school bullying, workplace bullies often operate within the established rules and policies of their organization and their society. Bullying in the workplace is, in the majority of cases, reported as having been perpetrated by management and takes a wide variety of forms.

In my last article I wrote about cyber-bullying emphasizing on school children, teens and young adults who are using the technology to destroy one another. But what we should all know is that, these young women and men carry these behaviors into their working environments as adults if they are not checked.

Wo r k p l a c e b u l l y i n g takes these forms: Serial bullying — the source of all dysfunction can be traced to one individual, who picks on one employee after another and destroys them, then moves on to another. It is probably the most common type of bullying at work.

expectations and other extreme pressures.

to deal with a serial bully which causes the general behaviour of the victim to decline and sink to the lowest level. Pair bullying: this takes place with two people, one active and verbal, the other often watching and listening.

Gang bullies or group bullying: is a serial bully with colleagues. Gangs can occur anywhere, but flourish in corporate bullying climates. It is often called and usually involves scapegoating and victimization.

There is also vicarious bullying in which two parties are encouraged to fight. This is the typical triangulation, where the aggression gets passed around. That particular co-worker gets bullied by almost everyone.

Interestingly, there is Fashion Bullying where others make funny jokes about someone’s way of dressing, just because the person is not wearing brand names clothing to workplace or not dressing like them.

Regulation bullying — where a serial bully forces their target to comply with rules, regulations, procedures or laws regardless of their appropriateness, applicability or necessity.

This is mostly used by bosses and mangers.

Residual bullying — after the serial bully has left or been fired, the behavior continues.

It can go on for years.

Legal bullying — the bringing of a vexatious legal action to control and punish a person.

It is one of the nastiest forms of bullying. Also of note is Pressure bullying or unwitting bullying which is having to work to unrealistic time scales and/or inadequate resources. It is mostly used by retailers/fast food places/restaurant/grocery stores and factories.

Corporate bullying is where an employer abuses an employee with impunity, knowing the law is weak and the job market is soft.

Organizational bullying is a combination of pressure bullying and corporate bullying.

This occurs when an organization struggles to adapt to changing markets, reduced income, cuts in budgets, imposed

Institutional bullying is usually entrenched and is accepted as part of the culture. Client bullying is when an employee is bullied by those they serve. The victims are usually subway attendants/ public servants/nurses and frontline workers.

Cyber bullying, as mentioned previously is the use of information and communication technologies to support deliberate, repeated, and hostile behaviour by an individual or group, that is intended to harm others.

Typical examples of work place bullying include: spreading malicious rumours, gossip, or innuendo that is not true, excluding or isolating someone socially, intimidating a person, undermining or deliberately impeding a person’s work, physically abusing or threatening abuse, removing areas of responsibilities without cause, constantly changing work guidelines, establishing impossible deadlines that will set up the individual to fail, withholding necessary information or purposefully giving the wrong information, making jokes that are ‘obviously offensive’ by spoken word or e-mail.

Some employers have a habit of intruding on a person’s privacy by pestering, spying or stalking, assigning unreasonable duties or workload which are unfavourable to one person, in a way that creates unnecessary pressure, under work - creating a feeling of uselessness, yelling or using profanity, criticising a person persistently or constantly, belittling a person’s opinions. They also include unwarranted or undeserved punishment. Examples of these are blocking applications for training, leave or promotion, tampering with a person’s personal belongings or work equipment.

How can bullying affects individuals? It is sometimes hard to know if bullying is happening at the workplace. Many studies acknowledge that there is a “fine line” between strong management tactics and bullying. Comments that are objective and are intended to provide constructive feedback are not usually considered bullying, but rather are intended to assist the employee with their work.

Can you name even one television program where a father is portrayed as he should be? Not since The Cosby Show has fatherhood been presented as the noble calling it really is.

There is an endless stream of research to show the significant impact an involved father has on the lives of his children. Children with caring fathers who are involved, nurturing and playful are more likely to do better linguistically and cognitively. Even toddlers with involved fathers can be expected to begin school with higher levels of academic readiness. These children also cope better with stress and frustrations in school than kids without involved fathers. The trend to academic achievement continues into the teen years. Teens are likely to have better verbal skills and do better in school thanks to fathers who stay involved.

One 2001 study by Rosenberg and Wilcox “The Importance of Fathers in the Healthy Development of Children” found that highly involved biological fathers had children who were 43 percent more likely than other children to achieve mostly “A” marks and 33 percent less likely to repeat a grade.

The same researchers show children with involved dads are more likely to be emotionally secure, be confident to explore their surrounding, and have better social connections with peers as they continue to mature. These same children are less likely to get into trouble at home, school and in public. Fathers who simply spend time in unstructured play with their children will find that their children are adjusted both emotionally and socially.

In order to stay connected with their children, fathers have been required to play a variety of roles. In light of the complicated and challenging youth culture our kids face. The following outlined roles are to be applied by fathers within the current youth culture.

P a r t i c i p a t o r In the distraction of our daily schedules, we have forgotten the importance of simply being there for our kids. Some children learn that dad only will show up in crisis situations when mom can no longer handle things. Participating fathers are there to help their children with the everyday issues, which in turn leads to more meaningful relationships.

It is a great way to teach basic life skills, such as making good choices, choosing good friends and learning to discern the important issues of life. The culture and all its temptations make a father’s involvement crucial. Dad leads the way by being an example of what he wants his children to become. We all know that “more is caught than taught” and it were never truer than in issues of parenting.

P l a y m a t e Fathers tend to engage in more physical play than mothers, who tend to be nurturers. Roughhousing has a number of benefits—builds muscles and coordination, is a place to teach rules and self-control, teaches taking turns and how to play physically without hurting others. It also is a wonderful

time for meaningful conversations and building deep emotional bonds.

Dads often underestimate the benefits of simply playing with their kids.

P r i n c i p l e d g u i d e Given today’s youth culture is permeated with an indifference to morality, perhaps the greatest role a father now plays is that of principled guide. It takes a great father to guide his children through their media minefield. Kids are looking for direction and guidance, which need to come from the home. Fathers help young people to see the dangers ahead and how to set boundaries for healthy living.

Proper discipline teaches sociallydesirable behavior and builds character.

It enables children to understand the consequences and reality of their own decisions and actions; something that is often missing in the media they watch.

It is important for fathers to catch their children doing something good. We have a natural tendency to only notice our kids when they do something wrong.

Guiding fathers recognize and reward the goodness in their children. True discipline is as much about reward as it is correction. Building reasonable, consistent boundaries in a youth world of “anything goes” will pay great dividends in the future for loving parents.

P r o v i d e r Society still values a father who provides tangible resources for his family. Some fathers believe that if they provide enough material things for their kids that they will be happy. If possessions made one happy, this generation of young people should be the happiest ever. However, most children long for relationships more than resources.

Dads can provide time helping with homework, attending school activities and caring for their children. There is a nurturing side to fathers that all kids long for. He sets the character example for what he wants his son or daughter to be when they grow up.

Teenagers are dying for relationships.

The popularity of such Web sites as Facebook and MySpace are evidence.

When surveyed, most young people agree they would rather have interaction with real people. For these young people, time with their father can be a life-changing experience as faceto-face guidance on a variety of life issues can be provided best through real interaction. For example, most kids learn most of what they know about sex from the media. Is there a less trustworthy source than their music and movies? Young people need to hear the truth from dad … and mom.

P r e p a r e r Many teens and young adults are struggling in the real world because they were never properly prepared for the real world; somehow life is much simpler on TV. Direction on values, morality, integrity and character also are part of the preparation. Parents want their children to grow up to be responsible citizens and it doesn’t happen by chance. It takes an involved father to assist them in making the right choices in a world where cheating, bullying, intimidation and lying have become the new life-skills to get ahead.

The ultimate goal is to prepare them to live life on their own with honor.

Summertime sports and exercise: How to keep cool in hot weather Working out in hot weather can lead to heat cramps, heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Stay safe by drinking enough fluids, wearing proper clothing and timing your workout to avoid extreme heat.

Summer sun means summer fun — and sometimes summer hazards.

In the last few days we have had a heat wave going through most of Southern Ontario and therefore we have to be careful to avoid heat related problems. I have been preaching regular exercises to our readers so I think it is appropriate to give you some tips for the hot weather.

In the excitement of a good pickup soccer game or even a leisurely stroll in the park, you might not notice the temperature rising. But as the day progresses, your body notices the heat, and if you don’t watch out, you can get into trouble quickly.

Under normal conditions, your body’s natural control mechanisms — skin, blood vessels and perspiration — adjust to the heat. But those systems could fail if you’re exposed to high temperatures for prolonged periods.

As a result, less blood is available for your muscles, so your heart rate during exercise is higher than on cool days.

If the humidity is high, your body faces added stress because sweat doesn’t readily evaporate from your skin. So your body temperature rises.

Working out in hot or humid conditions can overstress your body’s temperature-regulation system, resulting in an excessive increase in body temperature. Heatrelated problems may include heat cramps, dehydration, heat exhaustion and heat stroke. * Heed the warning signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke Stop exercising im-

* Heat exhaustion. Signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion include cool, clammy and pale skin, heat cramps, a weak pulse, nausea, chills and dizziness, weakness, or disorientation. You may have a headache and be short of breath. * Heat stroke. This condition can be lifethreatening. Your skin becomes hot, flushed and dry. You stop perspiring and your body temperature may rise above 106 F. You may feel confused and may even faint.

At the first hint of any of these signs and symptoms, get out of the heat, drink fluids, elevate your feet above your head, and either wet and fan your skin or immerse yourself in cool water.

Also, seek medical help.

Heat cramps Heat cramps are painful muscle spasms that can occur as a result of strenuous physical activity in a hot environment.

They develop when sweating depletes your body of salt (sodium) and water. The muscles of your arms, legs and abdomen are most commonly affected.

Applebaum, who ascended to the post with a vow to tackle misdeeds at city hall, was only in the job seven months before he was arrested by the province’s anticorruption unit (UPAC) and charged with 14 offences. He maintains his innocence and insists that his name will be cleared.

Last November, longtime mayor Gerald Tremblay resigned amid mounting pressure and accumulating allegations about collusion and corruption in his Union Montreal party.

Don’t exercise again until a few hours after the cramps have stopped. * Guidelines for working out in hot weather To avoid heat-related conditions: * Drink enough fluids.

Your body’s ability to sweat and cool down depends on adequate rehydration. During heavy exercise in the heat, you can lose almost 2 quarts of water every hour.

Recommended fluids include water, sports drinks and diluted fruit juices. Avoid caffeinated beverages such as coffee, tea and cola, which speed the excretion of water from your body.

Sports drinks include electrolytes — sodium, chloride and potassium — which are lost through sweating. If you’re going to be exercising very intensely or for longer than one hour, you may benefit from fluids containing carbohydrates and electrolytes. Keep in mind

that you can’t rely on your thirst to signal how much fluid you need to drink. Your thirst mechanism underestimates fluid loss in the heat. * Wear light-colored, loosefitting clothing made of breathable fabric. Dark or nonporous material can increase your temperature and reduce evaporation. Clothing made with polypropylene can help wick moisture away from the skin. Avoid heavy, rubberized clothing, which can be dangerous in any weather. Loosefitting clothing lets more air pass over your body, providing for sweat evaporation and cooling. A light-colored hat or cap can limit your exposure to the sun. * Exercise in the early morning or late evening. These are cooler times. If possible, exercise in the shade. * Allow yourself time to get used to higher temperatures. Your body will gradually adapt to the heat, allowing you

to exercise with a lower heart rate and lower body temperature. If you’re reasonably fit, allow four to five days to get used to higher temperatures. If you live with a chronic health condition or are older, you may need up to 10 to 12 days to adjust. Shorten the length of your exercise routine, lower the intensity, and gradually increase your effort. * Talk to your doctor if you have a chronic medical condition or take medications. Find out if your condition or medication might affect your ability to work out in hot weather. Certain medications — such as water pills — may make you more susceptible to heat-related illness.

As you plan your outdoor activities, keep in mind that certain people — young children and older adults, for instance — are at greater risk of heatrelated illness. If your activities include people in this age range, pay close attention to them for any signs of distress

It’ll cost $100 if the child’s application is processed outside Canada.

The increases may be too much of a burden for seniors or low-income Canadians, Passport Canada acknowledged in the regulations.

“Consultations have demonstrated that some segments of the

Canadian population may be more sensitive to an increase in passport fees,” the agency said in its cost-benefit analysis.

The NEXUS card can be used as valid identification only for travel between Canada and the United States.

The solution suggested?

Alternative travel documents, or none at all.

It currently costs American c i t i z e n s U S $ 11 0 t o renew a passport in the United States, or US$135 for a new one.

“Canadians unsatisfied with the passport fee increase may also choose an alternative travel document, such as a NEXUS card,” the agency said. “Or (they may) decide not to travel.”

In the United Kingdom, an adult passport will set back residents there the equivalent of about $117.

First, they expect their fathers to ask them how they are doing, how their day was and then take time to listen to their answers.

They need to know their father cares about them.

In one survey, 80 percent of our teens said having someone to listen to them is “very, very important.”

The Internet may be a great place to chat, but is anyone really listening?

Second, they expect their

fathers to be consistent and to model the behavior and beliefs they talk about. Fathers are expected to teach moral beliefs and standards, and to be an example.

Teens hate hypocrisy and double standards.

They want authenticity in their media world of shallowness and lies.

Third, young people long for fathers to love them unconditionally.

They need to know that regardless of how stupid they can be, their dad will love them “no matter what.” Teens want to see the emotional and compassionate side of the man they look up to.

Fourth, as much as they

need guidance they also need freedom. Freedom is earned as they prove they are responsible. Preparing your teens to live in the real world is a long and complicated process but very rewarding when done properly.

The report also showed that the proportion of agricultural households engaged in fish farming was low in all the regions.

The highest proportion was only 0.5 per cent in Greater Accra Region, followed by Western Region (0.4%) and Eastern Region (0.3%). In three regions, namely Central, Volta and Northern, the proportions were the same as the national average (0.2%). In the remaining four regions, namely Ashanti, Brong Ahafo, Upper East and Upper West, the proportion

was 0.1 per cent.

The Acting Census Cordinator of the GSS, Mr David Kombat, explained to the GRAPHIC BUSINESS that Agriculture was still the main employer of the economy, with about 42 per cent, and as such efforts must be made to address the issue of illiteracy currently facing the sector.

The report also recommended the reactivation of the nonformal adult education programme (which has been stalled) and to be targeted to rural areas where agriculture is predominantly practised.

The 2010 Census gathered information from each individual present in Ghana on September 26, 2010; the Census also collected data on all living quarters in Ghana as of September 26, 2010.

Beyond providing benchmark data for planning as released in the final results of the 2010 census in May 2012, the detailed analysis, according to Mr Kombat, is aimed at enhancing understanding of the effectiveness of the various interventions initiated by government and its collaborators to improve the lives of Ghanaians.

Ghana’s High Commissioner to Canada H.E Mr. Samuel Valis Akyianu visits Calgary cont'd on pg. 1

As ex Fire Chief of Ghana, His Excellency Mr. Akyianu together with Mr. Obeng Koranteng , Margarret Adu (VP – GCAC) and Mr. Joseph Mensah (Treasurer – GCAC) visited fire station #6, arranged by the Mayor to acquaint himself with State of the Art firefighting machinery and outfit.

His Excellency was very impressed about the modern technology in fire service, an occupation he worked in for over 35 years.

A town hall meeting was also organised for His Excellency and the Minister to meet Ghanaians. In his opening address Mr. Manful thanked the High Commissioner for doing what his predecessors had failed to do. Thus visiting the people he was commissioned to

serve. He said Ghanaians in Alberta were blessed to be in the richest and the best of all the provinces in Canada; he said Calgary could boast as the best place to bring up children and one of the best cities in the World to live in; that Alberta is the heartbeat of Canada’s economy; with the oil sands and all the Worlds’ oil companies headquartered in Calgary.

In reality, Alberta has a diversified and resourced-based economy. Energy sector is Alberta’s driving economic force. Other key industry sectors of the economy include petrochemicals, agriculture and agri-food, forest products, industrial machinery and metal fabrication, tourism, manufacturing, financial services, Information and communications t e c h n o l o g y .

Rev. Milton Ofei of Evangel Assembly of God father passes away in Ghana

Rev. Milton Ofei, Son The Late Prophet Wilfred Kofi Adjei, 81 years was born on 6th March 1932 in Akwapim Amono krom in the Eastern Region of Ghana. He was the founder of True Light Asempa (Kanea Ministry) at Nankese, Atwakan Eastern Region Ghana.

He died on Monday 25th February 2013 after a short illness at the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra Ghana. The late Prophet Adjei was blessed with many gifts. Under his guidance in his ministry, so many people became successful in business and other fields (private and government) in Ghana and abroad.

He is survived by 3 children- Rev. Milton Ofei, Monica Adobea and Michael Boafo and eight grandchildren. May his soul rest in perfect peace. Memorial gathering will be held at Evangel Assembly of God Church 1245 Martin Grove Road, Rexdale on Saturday July 13, 2013 from 8:00 pm to 11:30 pm The Prophet Wilfred Kofi Adjei

Let's Think Family - By Rev. Dr. Samuel Kisseadoo Some of the relationship challenges we face today 1) DECEIVED AND HURTING WOMEN I have always advised female to exercise extra caution not to fall in love too deeply with a man until they are sure that the man means business, is not capricious with his affections, and is someone who understands women and does not go around toying with the heart of women and breaking love relationships carelessly as if he is simply breaking light pieces of dry stick or cookies! A woman can be confronted with a huge challenge of lack of love, care, and acceptance from a pastor, church elder, ministry leader, boss, group leader, inlaw, colleague, friend, or other persons in the community that she associates with, which can still devastate her, drive her into seclusion and unhealthy life of privacy, and affect her marriage and love affairs.

When the challenge is in her home or marriage, it is worse, and will negatively impact her life outside her home even more.

One of the greatest challenges faced by many women today is the disappointing treatment they receive from men

after they have promised them heaven on earth but later make them feel rejected, and later find themselves nowhere near the hearts of the men after they have used the women to fulfill their physical desires and other forms of selfish purposes.

Women do disappoint men as well, and promise to be their lovers till the end, but frequently change their minds when another man with better education and more money or higher social or spiritual position comes along.

Men were not naturally wired with insight like women who are endowed to sense and more quickly detect things with their natural instincts. A woman does not need much explanation or special signs to extensive degrees before she can

see that a man does not sincerely love her.

Females are naturally wired by God to have very high sensitivity, and possess deeper insight t h an m en . T h ey are therefore able to sense and confirm it when a man no longer possesses them in the heart, and no more accepts them.

It is sad to say that in many cases, the men do not even love and accept the women to begin with; but there are careless and spiritually dull women who tragically miss the signs. In many instances the men think they can hide their true intentions, feelings, or disposition of the heart from the women, but that would never work! The woman can sense it very quickly, although several of them take a chance and fall for the deception.

Most women notice the pretentious acts, words, and behavior of a man who claims to be in love with them, but they are deceived to think that conditions will change for the better later on, which does not usually happen. It is worse for desperate women who are anxious to marry and

2) TRUE FAITH GOES WITH TRUE LOVE The truth is that faith and love go together (Colossians 1:4). It is not possible to genuinely love someone that you do not believe in. You may have some feelings of love and think that the emotional love is enough for a good relationship, or signify true love, but when the practice of true love confronts you (giving and forgiving), you then realize that you were working more with infatuation and superficial feelings of physical and emotional appeals rather than sacrificial meaningful love from your heart.

Un-acceptance and absence of genuine love can be easily exposed and traced in the kind of words spoken, nature of the speech, treatment meted out, responses to your communication and show of love, lack of appreciation for your services, specific attitude that is portrayed, and especially the spirit behind all of the words and actions. One can also see it in the way the person treats important things of yours.

If a man has lost his love for his wife (or vice versa) because of the person’s inability to face and deal with challenges responsibly, it becomes very difficult to make love with the person or show any warm affection and converse with the one or invite the person’s opinion on issues. All these become vital signs of a heart and a mind that have drifted away from a lover, and which no more place the person in the thoughts and planning of important things.

The tough economic and spiritual times that we

live in at the moment, plus multiples of glamorous girls and women that forcibly tantalize, seduce, and compete with married women for the love of their husbands, combined with the distractive pleasure and technology in our sophisticated communities, crystallize into a huge weapon of destruction for the love of men for their wives and fiancées in this era.

The modern woman is therefore faced with more challenges of constantly maintaining and guarding the stability of the love and acceptance of her husband for her, than the women of the past who had less sophistication and technologically engineered promiscuity to deal with in their generation. Many ladies fight for a while and get tired of fighting anymore, and then begin to quit in their minds and hearts.

When a woman loses her original love, trust, and acceptance for any man, it is more difficult to gain it back than a man who loses his love for his wife. Every girl or woman must be aware of this, and guard against discouraging thoughts, utterances, conversation, and actions that deepen her disappointment, anger, and frustration when she begins to sense the heart of her lover drifting away from her.

Men should also be fully aware of this fact, and stop toying with the hearts of women by taking thoughtless and cruel excursions into the land of the uncaring and un-loving men.

When some men know that a wife or a lover is very much dependent on them for their love, care, and resources, then pride and lighthearted ego can set in for the man to believe that the woman “has her finger in his mouth” which he can bite at anytime, so the lady would accept any kind of treatment he gives her. Some women

give similar treatment to their male partners.

We should admit that all of us make mistakes from time to time in our relationships, and must be forgiven and tolerated for us to heal our wounds and move on progressively. But even the poorest and most handicapped of all men or women cannot happily accept and tolerate any habitual mistreatment and misconduct that clearly makes him or her feel un-loved and unaccepted.

Cavaliers select Canadian (Best Defenceman of NHL, 2013) Bennett with No. 1 pick at draft

Canadian basketball history happened a year earlier than expected Thursday, in a stunning turn of events that surprised even Anthony Bennett.

The freshman forward from UNLV became the first Canadian selected No. 1 overall in the NBA draft, taken by the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Then it all fell apart.

“It’s obviously shocking when you think you have everything under control,” Rask said quietly, standing at his locker with a blue baseball cap on backwards and a towel draped over his shoulders.

Bryan Bickell beat him with 1:16 left to tie the game, Dave Bolland did it again with 59 seconds to go and the Chicago Blackhawks pulled off a stunning comeback for a 3-2 win on Monday night and their second Stanley Cup championship in four years.

The Bruins’ bid for their second title in three years ended in a flurry that left them wondering what went wrong.

Rask had been brilliant for most of the playoffs.

And he was outstanding again for most of Monday night’s game.

Then he got little help from his teammates as he let in two costly goals.

Bickell scored when he got behind forward Milan Lucic and tapped in a pass across the slot from Chicago captain Jonathan Toews.

“It was a quick play out of the corner,” said Bruins captain Zdeno Chara, who was on the ice for 10 of the Blackhawks final 12 goals in the series, including Bickell’s equalizer. “I saw a guy coming to the net.”

He and Chicago goalie Corey Crawford entered the game with identical 1.83 goals against averages in the playoffs. In the clincher, Crawford had 23 saves and Rask 28.

“I thought he was great all series,” Crawford said. “A lot of the games took a life of their own.

Sometimes we had shootouts, sometimes we had tight games, but he was there throughout. You see what it took to beat him tonight, a late flurry like that or we wouldn’t be standing here.”

Rally falls short The Bruins had an even more amazing comeback in the first round of the playoffs than the Blackhawks did on Monday.

Trailing 4-1 with less than 11 minutes left in the seventh game against the Toronto Maple Leafs, they forced overtime then won 5-4 on Patrice Bergeron’s goal.

Defenseman Andrew Ference dismissed any comparison between the two series.

“That was round one,” he said. “This is the finals.”

Not against a team that set an NHL record by getting at least one point in each of its first 24 games, going 21-0-4.

Rask was spectacular in the Eastern Conference finals against the highpowered Pittsburgh Penguins. He held Sidney Crosby and company to two goals in a fourgame sweep that sent the Bruins to the finals.

He even had better statistics than Tim Thomas, the goalie he backed up when the Bruins won the Stanley Cup in 2011. Thomas was MVP of that year’s playoffs then decided to take this season off.

“I’m really proud,” Rask said. “I think a lot of people didn’t expect us to go this far. We shocked the hockey world against Pittsburgh.”

The loss was especially painful because the Bruins wanted to provide good news for a city where the Boston Marathon bombing and its aftermath resulted in the deaths of four people.

They wanted to cap off the season with a championship.

“We really felt that we wanted to play as hard as we could for a numbers of reasons, for the city,” Chara said.

“We were very proud of the fans the way they stood behind us.”

In the end, though, the game ended with Blackhawks players hoisting the Stanley Cup over their heads and their fans cheering in the Bruins building.

How did that happen with the Bruins so close to forcing a seventh game? “We didn’t respond,” Rask said.

“I’m just as surprised as everybody else,” Bennett said moments after he strode across the Barclays Center stage in his scarlet and grey suit -- UNLV colours. “I didn’t really have any idea who’s going No. 1 or who was going No. 2. I heard everything was up for grabs. But I’m just really happy, glad that I have this opportunity, and I’ve just got to thank God for everything.”

The 20-year-old from Brampton, Ont., has starred for Canada’s junior national team and was the Mountain West Conference player of the year, but was rarely mentioned as a top-pick possibility in the lead up to the draft. He’s also been sidelined since he had rotator cuff surgery in May, but said on the eve of draft day that he wasn’t concerned his injury would affect his draft stock.

Turns out, he was bang on.

Tristan Thompson of Brampton was selected No. 4 by the Cavaliers in the 2011 draft, making him the highest Canadian draft pick before Thursday.

The historical selection comes amid heady days for Canadian basketball, and a year ahead of when many projected it would happen. Teen phenom A n d r e w Wi g g i n s o f Vaughan, Ont., who’ll play for the Kansas Jayhawks next season, is touted as the probable first overall pick in the 2014 draft.

“Yeah. It’s just crazy.

Next year with Wiggins, hopefully he does well at Kansas. I’m rooting for him. I’m pretty sure he’ll get that No. 1 spot.”
