En sólo cuatro años, hemos visto al GFNY Cozumel crecer de 1,000 corredores en 2014, a más de 3,000 este año, de 45 países.

Gracias por ayudarnos a hacer el GFNY Cozumel tan especial; no sería lo que es, sin tu espíritu, energía y determinación.

Nueva York: imponente, hostil, pero

seductora a la vez. Difícilmente se pueden juntar dos cosas tan intensas en un mismo fin de semana: visitarla y rodar lo que para mí es uno de los mejores Gran Fondo del mundo. El trabajo hecho por Uli y Lidia Fluhme para posicionar este evento a nivel mundial es un claro ejemplo de trabajar con pasión y profesionalismo a favor del ciclismo. Son ya más de 14 eventos al año alrededor del mundo con el símbolo de garantía GFNY. La gran manzana nos recibió con un calor agobiante el viernes previo al evento. El vuelo por Interjet, como es costumbre, muy bueno, excelente servicio y sin cobro de la bici, lo cual espero se quede como política de esta línea aérea. Este año viajé con un buen amigo y compañero de rodada: Álvaro García. Además se unieron al grupo de La Clásica: Wil y Emilio Castillo, así como Nicolás Mariscal, que desde que decidimos venir no ha fallado ya en tres años consecutivos. Son más de 25 años rodando juntos y siempre y cada vez que salimos es una nueva experiencia.

Podrá parecer tedioso ir tres veces seguidas a un mismo evento, pero al contrario, cada vez es una carrera distinta, aunque el clima siempre ha sido benévolo el día del evento, este factor influye en el desempeño, y aunque vas tomando más experiencia, también es cierto que vas teniendo un año más de vida.

Para esta edición varios amigos mexicanos de rodada se animaron al viaje, los Quinzaños, Jorge y Samantha; el grupo de los Charolastras, cuyo mejor representante fue Juan Musi, con un tiempazo; aunque en menor cantidad, hubo varios Guadalupanos, representados por Carlos Carriedo, Carlos Padilla y Carlos Campos; los Neme, apasionados del ciclismo y grandes promotores deportivos, rodaron el Gran Fondo; un gusto fue conocer a Jorge Santiago, de Oaxaca, potente ciclista y organizador de eventos de buen nivel en su natal estado, en julio, para no ir más lejos, organiza el Gran Fondo Oaxaca; en el ámbito más pro, la presencia de Raúl Alcalá como embajador del ya inminente GFNY Monterrey; Flavio de Luna, que ganó su lugar con sendas

La subida a Bear Mountain es espectacular, tráfico al subir, viendo descender a los punteros a muy alta velocidad en una combinación de esfuerzo y adrenalina único. A estas alturas (km 70) nuestro grupo se cortó, veníamos Padilla, Nico, Álvaro y yo, quedándonos en pareja Padilla y yo en la bajada de Bear Mountain, persiguiéndonos Nico y Álvaro.

En esa bajada dimos caza a un grupo de charolastras: Piri y Ricardo, quienes no pararon en el km 50, nosotros sí, ellos en el 73, haciendo la carrera a una parada y nosotros a dos, faltando la del km 110, lo que le puso sabor al ritmo, que sin decir nada confirma el viejo dicho ciclista de: “it is always a race”.

En el trayecto se van formando grupos internacionales, hombres y mujeres trabajando juntos con un solo idioma, el rodar, el disfrutar el ciclismo.

Padilla marcaba el ritmo, constante pero ligero, así fue como en el km 110 tras nuestra segunda detención, dimos alcance al Piri, lo agrupamos y dimos alcance a Ricardo; con unos 40 km a la meta estábamos parejos de nuevo y el resto es historia.

victorias en las versiones Cozumel y Ciudad de México, tuvo una gran actuación, personificando un ataque de fuga en los primeros kilómetros, que puso a temblar y a perseguir al pelotón internacional tras el hidrocálido, quien mantuvo una seria ventaja hasta el kilómetro 112, donde fue alcanzado por un contingente de dos italianos y dos americanos que lograron sacar ventaja del paisano y terminar el GF en un final de fotografía, con un tiempo de 4:28:47, siendo la victoria para Ricardo Pichetta, de Italia, y en segundo Víctor Gras, de Estados Unidos, con Chase Goldstein, de Canadá, en tercero.

El resto de los mortales fuimos llegando después.

No más atrás pasaron las mujeres, lideradas por la multicampeona colombiana Camila Cortés, que trajo de gregario de lujo a su galán, el colombiano ganador de otras ediciones, incluyendo México 2016, Gabriel Corredor. Segundo y tercer lugar fueron para brasileñas.

En cuanto a la experiencia en general el domingo, la cita es muy temprano en el

Washington Bridge. Con gran logística y orden los más de 5 mil corredores vamos encontrando nuestros corrales de salida.

Para a las 7 en punto, tras poder gozar de una vista privilegiada del Hudson y de Manhattan, arrancamos. El corral de adelante literalmente arranca a full, el resto vamos tomando ritmo y los primeros rebases suceden a los pocos metros del arranque.

Una vez que se entra al bosque en la vera del río Hudson, la experiencia es inolvidable, llegando a la primera cumbre en el km 20, se entronca con una carretera más ancha donde la velocidad se incrementa considerablemente y el trabajo en grupo es fundamental, aunque también se corre el riesgo de rodar muy duro con gente que no conoces y no sabes si tiene o no la destreza de rodar en pelotón a más de 50 km/h.

Alguna caída escuchamos, con la mala suerte de que al charolastra Gonzalo Autrique se lo llevaron puesto en una curva de alta velocidad, pero con agallas de ciclista se levantó, reacomodó casco y equipo y siguió adelante hasta la meta.

Este año el viento puso un factor en los últimos kilómetros, las ultimas subidas tendidas dividieron a los más fuertes y así vi irse a Padilla poco a poco con la agonía del que no puede seguir, pero con la alegría de ver a un buen amigo tener fuerza y atacar para marcar un excelente tiempo.

En la meta todo es una fiesta, Fort Lee se convierte en una gran kermesse.

Todos recibimos nuestra medalla con la satisfacción de haber logrado un gran reto. Ahí sentado estaba Carlos Petricioli, joven economista mexicano estudiando su maestría en Data Science en NYU y que forma parte del equipo de ciclismo de la universidad, sobra decir su nivel, pero no sobra agradecer las atenciones en una rodada previa un día antes en Central Park y una amena plática de ciclismo en un café neoyorquino tras la suave rodada sabatina.

Cerveza, vino, pasta y ambientazo; novias, esposas y familia esperando a los corredores. Poco a poco van llegando los amigos, todos estamos felices y satisfechos. El regreso rodando a Manhattan es también un lujo; despacio, muy despacio se disfrutan los más de 15 km a la vera del Hudson admirando la vida de Nueva York y su gente un domingo.

Invitados para 2018; la cita, el 20 de mayo.

Anímate, es una experiencia y un reto que nunca olvidarás.

Gran tip para mantenerte fresco GREAT TIP TO STAY COOL No importa qué tanto te hayas preparado para el GFNY Cozumel, tu carrera puede terminar antes de iniciar, si no sabes cómo manejar el calor. Sigue estos grandiosos tips y mantente fresco durante toda la carrera.

No matter how much preparation you do for GFNY Cozumel your race could end before it start’s if you don’t know how to manage the heat.

Follow these great tips and keep cool for the whole race.

Mantente hidratado: la idea es finalizar la carrera hidratado y no perder mucho líquido. Estudios han demostrado que si pierdes más del 2% de tu peso inicial, ahí es cuando puedes presentar problemas de desempeño.

1. Incrementa tu consumo de líquido dos días antes de la carrera.

2. Trata de beber una botella de agua por hora durante la carrera.

3. Asegúrate de beber electrolitos también, pues contienen sodio y ayudarán a tu cuerpo a absorber el líquido.

4. Asegúrate de tener suficiente sodio en tus bebidas, el cual es el nutriente principal para mantener el volumen del plasma de tu sangre y transportar agua a tus músculos de trabajo.

Stay Hydrated The idea is to finish the race hydrated and not lose too much liquid. Studies have shown that if you lose more than 2% of your starting weight that’s when you could run into performance problems.

1. Increase your liquid intake two days before the race.

2. Try to drink one water bottle per hour during the race.

3. Make sure to drink an electrolyte drink as well since they contain sodium and will help your body absorb the liquid.

Great advice on how to get a podium win or better your finish time GET READY FOR A FAST START The first 20 min is always fast so that’s the moment to race for position and find the perfect group to keep with. Your heart rate will increase rapidly but stay strong it won’t last too long.

GET INTO YOUR RACE ZONE This is usually a 7 on a scale of 1-10.

As you’re racing keep telling yourself how much you trained for this day.

The last 10-20 km get into time trial mode and leave everything on the road behind you.

You want to finish knowing you gave it 100%.

SPEED WILL PICK UP AT THE KOW SECTION

MONITOR YOUR COMPETITION Check to see who looks tired or who has attacked too many times. That will be your time to make a break and gain a lead. Check the rear bib numbers to make sure they’re in your category.

HIDE FROM THE WIND A big secret for GFNY Cozumel racers is to stay all the way to the right of the road at certain parts of the KOW section. The wind actually goes over your head if you stay in the drops. You’ll see more tree’s in those areas on the right side of the road.

Last years winner of the KOW wasn’t in the lead group but still had a better time. Expect faster speeds at this section and be prepared for it. The beginning is usually faster until everyone settles into a rhythm.

WORK AS A TEAM

AID STATION TIME LIMIT

GFNY cycling is a team sport. See who will work together with you and share the effort all the way to the finish line. Devise a plan together of how long each of you will pull at the front.

Give yourself a maximum time limit to be at the aid stations. This is where many people lose time.

Q: My schedule changed and I can’t come to Cozumel. Can my friend pick up my goodie bag for me? Yes. Send an email to your friend, authorizing them to pick up your goodie bag, along with a copy of your photo ID. Then at the expo your friend can show the email and a copy of your ID at the check-in booth to pick up your goodie bag and jersey for you.

Q: I’m flying in on Saturday night. Can my friend pick up my race packet for me? No. For security reasons, every participant has to be present at packet pickup on Friday or Saturday. If you cannot make it to the expo to pick up your race packet, you will forfeit taking part in the event. We recommend changing your flight to arrive in Cozumel to make it to the expo in time.

Rules

1. GFNY Cozumel (“GFNY”) es una carrera de ciclismo, donde los participantes están cronometrados individualmente.

1. GFNY Cozumel (“GFNY”) is a bike ride where riders are individually timed.

2. Entry 2.1 The entry to GFNY is open to riders aged 18 or older. Registration is done online at www.gfnycozumel.com. Online entry closes at 3,000 riders or on November 6, whichever comes first. After that, any available entries will be sold at GFNY Cozumel Bike Expo on Nov 10 and 11. GFNY has the sole discretion over entry numbers and cut off dates.

2.2 Riders who have been banned by a federation for a doping violation will be refused.

2.3 Each rider has to ensure that his/her health condition is sufficient for the event.

2.4 Each rider is responsible for having sufficient insurance coverage. GFNY may offer additional insurance at its sole discretion.

2.5 Entries are not refundable, transferrable or deferrable. No rider shall be entitled to an entry fee refund in case of disqualification.

2.6 GFNY reserves the right, in its sole and complete discretion, deny entry, revoke the entry application of any applicant at any time, and/or to disqualify any individual from the event.

3. Equipment 3.1 Bike: any technically serviceable roadworthy bicycle is permitted. The following are not permitted for safety reasons: prone bicycles, recumbent bikes and bicycles with chair seating (except for challenged athletes), wristband at the checkpoint will be penny farthings or mono cycles. Unsafe bikes can be banned at any time during the event.

3.2 Triathlon handlebars are permitted IF the rider keeps both hands at the brake levers while riding within 10 meters of another rider. A violation can lead to immediate disqualification. Triathlon bikes will be seeded in the rear corrals.

3.3 Helmets must be worn by all riders at all times and have to be securely fastened with a chinstrap at all times while riding.

3.4 Jersey: the official event jersey of the respective year must be worn at all times. No exceptions. Wearing a different jersey will lead to a severe time penalty or disqualification.

3.5 Bike number: the number plate with the chip timing straps on the back must be attached to the handlebar and be clearly visible from the front at all times. Any alteration of the number can lead to disqualification or the timing chips may not work properly.

3.2. Manubrios de Triatlón/Aero-barras están permitidos si el ciclista mantiene las dos manos en las palancas de freno mientras conduce a una distancia mínima de 10 metros de otro ciclista. Una violación a esta regla puede llevar a la descalificación inmediata.

3.3. Los participantes deberán de usar casco en todo momento durante la carrera, segura y correctamente sujetado de la correa de la barbilla.

3.4 Jersey: el jersey oficial del evento, del año respectivo, debe ser llevado puesto todo el tiempo. No hay excepciones. Utilizar un jersey diferente llevará a una severa penalización de tiempo o a la descalificación.

3.7. Pulsera: deberá ser usada en la muñeca en todo momento durante el evento.

3.8. Los participantes deberán llevar al menos una cámara de repuesto y una bomba de aire o cartucho de CO2.

4. Salida 4.1. Los corrales de salida abrirán a las 6:00 am en Rafael E. Melgar y Av. 11. A ciclistas sin su jersey GFNY, número de bicicleta, número de jersey, casco y pulsera en el punto de control, se les negará el acceso a los corrales de salida.

4.2. El área de salida cerrará a las 7:00 am. Si un participante llega tarde, no podrá entrar en el área o competir.

4.3. Orden de inicio: (1): Lista Rossa: campeones del año pasado (general, edad, grupos, equipos), VIP. (2): Corrales competitivos.

(2.1): Los ciclistas con licencia en varios corrales de acuerdo a su ranking. Requisito mínimo: Categoría 1-3 Hombres; Categoría 1-2 Mujeres; Categoría 1-2 Masters Hombres; Categoría 1 Masters Mujeres y su equivalente internacional. GFNY se reserva el derecho de excluir a categorías bajas si hay demasiadas solicitudes.

Peticiones para corrales de carrera no serán atendidas después del 15 de octubre de 2017.

(2.2): Top 10% de cada grupo de edad de los tres años anteriores.

(3): Ciclistas del Gran Fondo (100 millas) por grupos de edad.

(4): Participantes del GFNY Cozumel Medio (50).

Minimum requirement: Cat 1-3 Men, Cat 1-2 Women, Cat 1-2 Masters Men, Cat 1 Masters Women and their international equivalent. GFNY reserves the right to exclude low categories if there are too many requests. Race corral requests may not be honored after October 15, 2017.

5. Competition 5.1. All riders are timed by chip timing from start to finish. Overall rankings are determined by gun time. Age group and King of the Wind rankings are determined by net (chip) time. Only riders who complete the full GFNY course are eligible for competition ranking and prizes.

GFNY reserves the right, in its sole and complete discretion, to change the rules if deemed appropriate.

5.4. All protests concerning the order of finish shall be examined and resolved by the chief judge, whose decision is final and without appeal.

It is the rider’s responsibility to familiarize himself/herself with the rules of the event and the course before the start. Taking alternate routes or cutting the course short leads to disqualification from the current competition and to a ban at future GFNY. 6. Abuse 6.1. No rider may be disrespectful toward race directors, officials, staff, riders, volunteers or spectators.

6.2. No rider may use foul or abusive language or conduct during GFNY. 6.3. No rider may assault (an unlawful attempt, coupled with the present ability, to commit a violent injury on the person of another to anyone connected with GFNY (including but not limited to riders, spectators, public officials, volunteers, staff, etc.).

6.4. Any of the above will lead to disqualification and a lifelong ban for GFNY events.

7. Conduct 7.1. Cyclists have to obey all laws of the road including traffic lights and stop signs unless overwritten by police.

7.2. No rider may make an abrupt motion so as to interfere with the forward progress of another rider, either intentionally or by accident.

7.3. Any rider who appears to present a danger to the other riders may be disqualified by GFNY either before, during, or after the event.

7.4. Pushing or pulling or any other physical assistance among riders is prohibited in all categories except the him & her categories where pushing or pulling is encouraged. Devices of any sort to pull or push are not allowed.

7.5. Team cars or personal support cars are not allowed.

7.6. If a rider is laying on the ground and is visibly in difficulty, any following rider has to stop and help unless there are already at least three people helping. You may continue if a) the victim is fine or b) medical personnel has arrived.

7.7. Any misconduct with respect to the above can lead to disqualification and a life long band to future GFNY events.

8. Environment GFNY is committed to protecting the environment. Any discarding of trash or food outside the designated trash receptacles at the aid stations or “eco zones” is prohibited and can lead to disqualification and a lifelong ban at GFNY Cozumel. Any urinating in public is prohibited and can lead to disqualification and a lifelong ban at GFNY events.

9. Performance Enhancing Drugs 9.1 GFNY is committed to a drug free sport. Performance Enhancing Drugs (PED) are prohibited in preparation for and during GFNY. GFNY reserves the right to enforce doping controls before, during and after the event.

9.2 Any violation of World Anti Doping Association (WADA) rules will lead to disqualification, reclaim of prizes and a lifelong ban at GFNY events.

GFNY shares positive doping controls with other event organizations as well as the public at large once USADA determined a rule violation.

9.3 If a rider declines to be tested, he/she will be banned.

9.4 A Rider who tests positive at GFNY will have to reimburse the cost of the doping control. Furthermore, such rider has to reimburse GFNY for any damages to its reputation that are a consequence of his/her positive doping control. If the rider is part of a team participating at GFNY, the team can be held liable for this damage.

GFNY participants are highly encouraged to stay informed about PEDs and PED testing. GFNY recommends the USADA Athlete handbook.

10. Acceptance of Risk All those who ride and compete under these rules do so at their own risk. No liability shall attach to GFNY or any of its officials with respect to any loss or injury sustained or caused by anyone competing or riding in GFNY.

The four fastest times from a team will be added and ranked to determine the fastest team. The podium 4-person teams will be awarded prizes.

All members of a cycling team who are competing in the team Competition are eligible for individual age group prizes.

The Him & Her team competition consists of two age categories: sub90 and 90+ years old combined.

Members of Him & Her teams are not eligible for individual age group prizes because rider assistance between the team members in this category is permitted and encouraged.

Lista de control previa a la carrera

Sigue la siguiente lista de control y prepárate para el día de carrera Pon tu número dorsal en las bolsas traseras de tu jersey de carrera 2017: sujétalas en el lado no dominante. Si eres diestro, sujeta el número dorsal a tus bolsillos izquierdo y central.

Sujeta la placa con el chip al frente del manubrio: asegúrate de que la placa esté agarrada al frente del manubrio de la bici con las bandas de sujeción provistas, y que estén apretadas y seguras. Si la computadora de tu bici evita que pongas la placa directamente en el manubrio, entonces deberá ser puesta de frente, bajo la computadora.

Ve al mecánico y haz un ajuste: no hay nada peor que no poder comenzar una carrera debido a un problema mecánico. Asegúrate antes de viajar, de llevar tu bici a un mecánico, el cual podrá revisarla y realizar todos los ajustes necesarios. Es un precio pequeño a pagar y estarás feliz de no quedarte parado a un lado del camino en Cozumel, pidiendo ayuda mecánica.

Verifica tus llantas: revisa tus llantas en busca de hoyos, vidrio o que en general sean “úsese y tírese”. Si tienes algo de lo descrito arriba será mejor adquirir nuevas llantas para evitar una ponchadura en el camino de GFNY Cozumel.

Empaca tu cámara para llanta, CO2 y desmontables: decimos esto una y otra vez, aprende cómo cambiar tus propias llantas y así tendrás un mucho mejor tiempo. Empaca todo el equipo necesario para que tú mismo puedas cambiar una llanta ponchada en el camino y salves tiempo valioso.

Empaca tu paquete de nutrición: no hay comida o bebidas disponibles durante el inicio de la carrera, así que es mejor llevar algunos geles y bocadillos que duren por lo menos la primera hora de rodada. Hay ocho estaciones de ayuda en el camino para el Gran Fondo (160 km), pero puedes meter algunos geles en los bolsillos de tu jersey, así no tendrás que parar a reabastecerte tan a menudo.

Lleva una mochila: hay muchas actividades para disfrutar en el área de meta, así que empaca ropa seca para cambiarte después de la carrera, en tu mochila registrada. Podrás recoger tu mochila registrada, con tu pulsera y número dorsal después de la carrera. Sugerimos empacar una playera, shorts, sandalias y una toalla.

Planea tu mañana de carrera: recomendamos que llegues a la línea de salida cerca de las 6:00 am para tomar una buena posición en tu corral de inicio. Esto te dará suficiente tiempo para ir al baño, aclarar la seguridad, hacer un chequeo final a la bici y posicionarte en el corral. Si llegas tarde, entonces serás colocado en los corrales traseros, por seguridad.

Revisa el diagnóstico del clima: asegúrate de llevar el equipo correcto para el clima del día. Cozumel es conocido por tener repentinas lluvias, así que querrás estar preparado por si acaso, quizá con un ligera chamarra o chaleco para lluvia.

PRE-RACE CHECKLIST

Follow the check list below and be prepared for race day: Put your bib number on the back pockets of your 2017 race jersey: attach the bib number on your nondominant side. If you’re right-handed, attach the bib number to your left and center pockets.

Attach the bike chip plate to the front of your handlebars: make sure the Bike Plate is attached to the front handlebar of the bike with the supplied zip ties and are tight and secure to your bike. If your bike computer prevents you from putting the bike plate directly on the bar, the bike plate should be placed facing forward, under the computer.

Go to a mechanic and get a tuneup: there’s nothing worse than not being able to start a race because of a mechanical. Make sure before you travel to take your bike to a mechanic who can check your bike and make all the necessary adjustment. It’s a small price to pay and you’ll be happy you won’t get stuck on the side of the road in Cozumel waiving for a mechanic.

Check your tires: check your tires for holes, glass, or overall wear and tear.

If you have any of the above it’s better to get new tires and avoid a flat on the GFNY Cozumel course.

Pack your spare tube, co2, and tire levers: we say this again and again, learn how to change your own tires and you’ll have a much better time. Pack all the necessary equipment to change a flat by yourself on the course and you’ll save valuable time.

Pack your race nutrition: there is no food or drinks available during the morning start of the race so it’s better to pack some gels and snacks that will last at least for the first hour of racing. There are 8 aid stations on the course for the 160 km but if you can pack some gels into your jersey pocket then you won’t need to stop and refuel so often.

Pack your check bag: there are a lot of activities to enjoy at the finish area, so pack some dry clothes to change into after the race in your Checked Bag. You’ll be able to pick up your checked

bag with your GFNY Cozumel bracelet and Bib number after the race. We suggest to pack a t-shirt, shorts, sandels, and a towel.

Plan your race morning: we recommend that you arrive to the start line by 6:00 am to get a good position in your starting corral. This will give you enough time to go to the bathroom, clear security, do a final bike check and get into your start corral. If you arrive late then you will be placed in the rear corrals by security.

Important! Make sure you’re wearing your mandatory race jersey, bike plate, bib number and wristband. You will not be allowed on the bridge without them.

El acceso a corrales cierra a las 7 am. Si llegas después de las 7 am corres el riesgo de no tener acceso a los corrales y no estar en los resultados. El área de inicio se localiza en Avenida Rafael E. Melgar, a lo largo del frente del mar, cruzando la calle del palacio municipal, como referencia.

The start area opens at 6:00 am do not arrive later than 6:00 am. It will take time to get everyone checked in and to their corrals. Access to the Corrals closes at 7:00 am. If you arrive after 7:00 am you will risk not having access to the corrals and not being in the results. The start area is located on Avenida Rafael E. Melgar along the oceanfront across the street from the City Hall (Municipio) for reference.

Make sure to put on sunscreen and eat breakfast in the morning. Bring your ID, cash, credit card, and cell phone with you. Fill up both water bottles and stow some food in your jersey pockets. There will be a snack/coffee station only for VIP participants at the start line.

Place the bike number plate at the front of your handlebar and attach it with the provided zip ties. Your bike plate identifies you as an official participant to police and GFNY Cozumel staff. It also has your timing chips attached to it, and the timing chips will only work if the bike plate is unaltered and attached as instructed.

Coloca el número de la bici al frente de tu manubrio y sujétalo con las abrazaderas que se te darán. You can only check in one bag at the bag drop at the start/finish line.

Only hand bags or backpack size bags will be accepted measuring maximum (40 x 46 cm). Make sure that your bag is closed properly, the bag check number is attached well and the number is clearly visible.

Your bag check number will be the same as you bib number.

Bag drop will be located by the start/finish line next to the City Hall.

Both 160 km and 80 km distance participants will receive their bags after the race at the same location you dropped it off at. Don’t leave any valuables in the bag because GFNY Cozumel is not responsible for any wet, lost or stolen item.

Everything must be picked up at the finish by 5 pm or it will be discarded.

Sólo bolsas de mano o mochilas serán aceptadas si miden máximo 40x46cm. Asegúrate de que tu mochila esté cerrada apropiadamente, el número de registro de la misma esté bien colocado y sea claramente visible. El número de registro será el mismo que tu número dorsal.

El depósito de equipaje estará localizado cerca de la línea de salida/meta, a un lado del palacio municipal. Participantes del Medio Fondo y Gran Fondo recibirán sus mochilas después de la carera en el mismo lugar que las dejen. No dejes cosas de valor en tu mochila, porque GFNY Cozumel no es responsable por algún objeto mojado, perdido o robado.

Todo deberá ser recogido al final, alrededor de las 5 de la tarde, o será desechado.

There will be portapotties, emergency service, bag check, entertainment and mechanics by the start area in the morning. Strict security measures permit only registered GFNY Cozumel participants to access the start corrals.

Race Corrals The corrals are divided by these categories; VIP, top 10% of previous GFNY races, licensed riders, 160 km distance age group riders, 80 km distance riders. and physically challenged. If your friends are in your distance category, you will be in the same starting corral. However, if you are in a different distance category, you can still start the event together but the person in the front must move to the back corral where the friend is.

The event will start at 7:30 am promptly rain or shine. There will be an opening ceremony and a lead out caravan to start the race. Expect fast speeds during the start as riders are racing to get into position and form their groups.

If you arrive after 7:00 am you will risk not being in the final results.

Make sure to arrive to the start at 6:00 am, so there’s enough time to find your corral.

Habrá baños portátiles, servicios de emergencia, registro de mochilas, entretenimiento y mecánicos en el área de salida por la mañana. Medidas estrictas de seguridad permiten solamente que participantes registrados del GFNY Cozumel accedan a los corrales.

Corrales de carrera Los corrales están divididos en estas categorías: VIP, el mejor 10% de las carreras GFNY previas, corredores con licencia, Gran Fondo, Medio Fondo, personas con discapacidades físicas. Si tus amigos están en la misma categoría, se encontrarán en el mismo corral.

De cualquier modo, si estás en una categoría diferente, aún pueden iniciar juntos, pero la persona al frente deberá moverse hacia el corral trasero, donde se encuentre su amigo.

¿Qué tan rápido tengo que rodar?

Puedes rodar tan rápido como quieras, de cualquier manera el límite para completar el evento es a las 4:30 pm, lo que significa que tienes nueve horas para completar la totalidad del recorrido; esto es aproximadamente 10 mph/16.09 kph, incluyendo las paradas en las estaciones de ayuda. La barredora seguirá el recorrido a 10 mph/16.09 kph. Los rezagados que sean rebasados por el carro pueden, o ser llevados, o rodar por sí mismos, fuera del evento.

HOW FAST DO I HAVE TO RIDE? You can ride as fast as you want. However, the cutoff for completing the event is at 4:30 pm, which means you have 9 hours to complete the full course. This is approximately 10 mph including stopping at aid stations. A broom wagon will trail the course at 10 mph. Stragglers who get passed by the car can either get a ride or will be riding on their own outside the event.

WILL THERE BE RESTROOMS AT THE START/FINISH AND THE COURSE? Yes the start/finish area plus aid stations are equipped with portapotties.

There is no “feeding on the fly”. Use your GFNY Cozumel bottle to refill.

GFNY Cozumel is an eco-friendly event. We do not provide cups or bottles.

IF I HAVE A MECHANICAL ISSUE ON THE COURSE? We highly encourage all participants to have basic safety and repair skills, and in particular fixing a flat tire. Everyone has to bring at least a pump, levers, and a spare tube. However if you are still unable to make the repair, rolling mechanical support vehicles and scooters with GFNY Cozumel mechanics will be driving along the route throughout the day. If you have a mechanical that cannot be easily fixed, there will be transportation to take you back to the finish area. Please note that the wait for assistance and/ or the broom wagon can be long and by waiting you run the risk of falling out of the cutoff and being able to finish the event. Visit your local bike shop to learn the basic repair skills, check out online videos or ask an experienced cycling friend.

IF I NEED MEDICAL ASSISTANCE WHAT DO I DO? Emergency medical service and kits will be at the aid stations, on the course and on call. There will also be rolling ambulances circling the route throughout the day. Police officers, marshals, and bike mechanics will be traveling on the course on motorcycles and in cars.

Police officers will be stationed at the intersections controlling traffic and volunteers will be guiding the cyclists for turns at various locations.

Each of these people will be able to assist in-case of an emergency. If you need help inform someone on the course and they will get help to you as quickly as possible and stay with you until help arrives. No matter at what point help will always be close.

¿Si tengo un problema mecánico durante el recorrido?

Animamos ampliamente a todos los participantes a que tengan habilidades básicas de seguridad y reparación, en particular para arreglar una llanta pinchada. Todos tienen que traer bomba, herramientas y una cámara de repuesto, sin embargo si aún así no te es posible realizar la reparación, vehículos de apoyo mecánico y scooters con mecánicos del GFNY Cozumel estarán conduciendo a lo largo de la ruta a través del día. Si llegas a tener un problema mecánico que no pueda ser arreglado fácilmente, habrá transporte para llevarte al área de llegada. Si necesito ayuda médica, ¿qué debo hacer?

El servicio médico de emergencia y los kits estarán en las estaciones de ayuda, en el recorrido y por llamada. Habrá también ambulancias en los alrededores de la ruta a través del día. Oficiales de policía, jefes de policía y mecánicos de bicicletas estarán recorriendo el camino en motocicletas y carros. Habrá oficiales de policía estacionados en las intersecciones, controlando el tráfico, y voluntarios estarán guiando a los ciclistas por turnos en muchos lugares. Cada una de estas personas es capaz de asistir en caso de una emergencia. IF YOU HAVE A BAD DAY AND REALIZE I WONT BE ABLE TO FINISH, WHAT DO I DO? GFNY Cozumel will have SAG (Support and Gear) vehicles along the course for any cyclists who are unable to complete the event. Try to make it to the next or previous aid station, there you will have food, water, emergency medical services as well as volunteers to keep you company. If you are unable to ride to an aid station, move off the road and wait at the shoulder of the road until a mechanic or SAG rides by, they will be on the lookout for stopped cyclists. If you are riding and you see a cyclist on the side of the road who needs help, when you get to the next police officer or volunteer, report that you saw a stopped cyclist and their approximate location, they will call for an ambulance.

Si tengo un mal día y me doy cuenta de que no seré capaz de llegar a la meta, ¿qué debo hacer?

GFNY Cozumel tendrá vehículos de Apoyo y Orientación (SAG por sus siglas en inglés) durante el trayecto para cualquier ciclista que no pueda completar el evento. ARE TRIATHLON BIKES OR AERO BARS ALLOWED? Triathlon bikes and aero bars are permitted but when you are in the aero bars you must keep a distance of 10 meters from the riders to the front or rear of you. Any riders caught in the aero positon when riders are closer than 10 meters will be time penalized.

If your team has 8 members or more, your team will be broken out as follows: fastest 4 members will be “Your Team Name A”, the next 4 fastest members will be “Your Team Name B”, etc, in the team results.

¿Qué sucede después de que cruzo la línea de llegada?

El GFNY Cozumel termina con vistas espectaculares del Caribe mexicano a lo largo de la avenida frente al océano. La meta será el mismo lugar de salida, que es cruzando la avenida desde el Municipio.

Tanto el trayecto de 160 km, como el de 80 km, terminan en el mismo sitio.

Una vez que cruces la línea de llegada recibirás la medalla de finalizador del GFNY, una toalla fresca y húmeda para quitar toda la sal y sudor de tu cara, además habrá una buena selección de frutas, Powerade y muchos bocadillos para ayudarte a relajar los músculos.

Desde aquí tendrás la opción de aparcar tu bici en nuestra zona segura de estacionamiento.

What happens after I cross the finish line?

GFNY Cozumel finishes with spectacular views of the Mexican Caribbean ocean along the oceanfront avenue. The finish line will be the same location as the start area which is across the street from the city hall (Municipio).

160 km and 80 km courses finish in the same location. Once you cross the finish line you will receive your GFNY Cozumel finisher medal, a cool wet towel to wipe away all the salt and sweat from your face, plus there will be a nice selection of fruits, Powerade, and various snacks to help cool your muscles. From there you will have the option to park your bicycle in our secure bike parking zone.

Can I get a massage at the finish area?

There will be a team of massage therapists at the finish area ready to help relax your muscles after your long day on the saddle.

Where can I find my results?

Race results will be located at the results tent next door to the GFNY Cozumel boutique. You will also be able to find your results with our live results app which will be available shortly before the race.

What time does the awards ceremony start?

This year there will be two awards ceremonies.

The first will start at 12 pm for the Overall female/male winners of the 160 km & 80 km distance. The second awards ceremony will start at 1:30 pm (tentatively) for the age group & category winners of the 160 km & 80 km distances. The award ceremony will start at the finish area by the podium area.

All participants must check their results to see if they placed a podium position and if so they must enter the winners tent which is located in the rear of the podium. The winners tent is where all winners will be called up to the stage to receive your prizes and trophies.

Will there be a raffle?

This year we will be giving away many raffle prizes at the Senor Frogs Recovery party at 8 pm. In order to participate you must pick up your raffle ticket at the GFNY Cozumel boutique. All participants are able to participate. This year prizes include Trek Emonda ALR, Oakley sunglasses, Bontrager bicycle accessories and much much more. We invite everyone to come and celebrate with us. All participants must be present at the raffle in order to win.

How do i get back from the finish?

Depending where you’re staying you can either ride back or take a taxi back to your hotel. There will be plenty of taxis on standby waiting to take you back. If you rented a car and parked it near the finish line most side roads will be open for you to drive back to your hotel.

Espectadores ¿En qué momento los primeros corredores cruzarán la línea de llegada?

La celebración en la meta, dando la bienvenida a todos los finalizadores, comenzará a las 10 am, donde habrá bandas y entretenimiento para que todos disfruten. El año pasado hubo un emocionante sprint final, así que llega temprano para agarrar un buen lugar.

A mi familia le gustaría seguirme en un carro, ¿eso se permite?

El GFNY Cozumel estará cerrado para los carros y el tráfico. Sólo carros permitidos de carrera tendrán acceso a la ruta, con pases especiales. ¿Cuáles son los mejores puntos para mirar la carrera en el camino?

Si te localizas en la sección norte de la isla, en la intersección entre la Av. 11 y Rafael E. Melgar, hay una buena vuelta donde puedes ver a todos los ciclistas pasar. Si quieres ver a todos los ciclistas correr a través del centro, entonces cualquier lugar en la Av. 30 será genial para animarlos mientras pasan por ahí. Desde esas locaciones podrás caminar al área de meta, siempre y cuando lo hagas a tiempo.

SPECTATORS WHAT TIME WILL THE FIRST RIDERS CROSS THE FINISH LINE? The Finish line celebration welcoming all finishers will start at 10 am where there will be bands and entertainment for everyone to enjoy. Last year was an exciting sprint finish so come early to get a good spot.

MY FAMILY WOULD LIKE TO FOLLOW ME IN A CAR IS THAT ALLOWED? The GFNY Cozumel course will be closed to cars and traffic. Only permitted race vehicles will have access to the course with special passes.

¿Hay un área donde mis hijos puedan jugar mientras esperamos a que lleguen los corredores?

WHAT ARE THE BEST SPOTS TO WATCH THE RACE ON THE COURSE? If you’re located in the northern section of the island then by the intersection of 11 av. and Rafael E. Melgar is a nice turn where you can see the riders race by. If you want to see the riders race through the downtown then any location on the 30 avenue would be great to cheer the riders as they go by as well. From those locations you would still be able to walk to the finish line as long as you leave in time.

Dile a tus familiares y amigos que lleguen al área de meta lo más temprano posible, ya que los lugares se estarán llenando muy rápido, pues anticipamos para este año un final al sprint. Estaremos también dando aplaudidores en muchas otras áreas de la ruta, así que dondequiera que estés, haz mucho ruido cuando los ciclistas pasen.

GET READY TO MAKE SOME NOISE! GFNY Cozumel will be giving away clappers by the finish line to celebrate and cheer all the participants crossing the finish line. The more noise you make the better. Tell your family and friends to get to the finish area early as spots will fill up very quickly as we anticipate this year will be a sprint finish. We will also be handing out clappers in other areas of the race route, so where ever you are make a lot of noise when the riders go by.
