Investing in a high performance oil filter will help your car go that ‘extra mile’ Grand Forks Herald/Friday, April 16, 2010

PRNewswire

The longer you plan on keeping a vehicle, the more vital it is to have regular oil and filter changes on your car’s maintenance schedule. Clean, filtered oil lubricating the engine and its components ensures smooth and efficient operation for as long as the vehicle remains in service. However, if you are a motorist looking for the optimal level of driving performance, going a step further and choosing a high performance oil filter may be the best option for you. “A high performance oil filter is especially engineered to pay additional dividends,” said Ramon Nunez, Director of Filtration for Bosch, the world’s largest supplier of automotive parts and systems. Bosch offers oil, fuel and cabin air filters to the North American aftermarket at www.boschautoparts.com.

What makes a high performance filter?

According to Nunez, the more advanced the materials and technology used in the construction of a filter, the greater its ability to keep the engine performing efficiently

over a long period of time. For instance, the Bosch DistancePlus(TM) high performance oil filter keeps oil extraordinarily clean, protects the engine against harmful contaminants and prevents engine wear. Additionally, it works with any brand of synthetic and conventional motor oil. Essentially, an oil filter keeps dirt from harming an engine. Dirt is an engine’s most virulent enemy that can enter the engine and damage its internal components. What makes a good quality filter, Nunez said, is “its efficiency in capturing the dirt and its capacity to hold the debris.” Since there is no way for a driver to know that the filter is clogged, it’s vital that it has a large enough capacity to supply clean oil to the engine for as long as possible. The advanced synthetic fiber media in Bosch DistancePlus has 99.9 percent efficiency in removing dirt from the oil and a 300 percent greater capacity to hold it than many other filters, Nunez said. In the case of some Bosch oil filters, this translates into a capacity of 29.1 grams of contaminants – almost four times that of an economy filter. Other features of Bosch Dis-

tancePlus high performance oil filters include a pressure relief valve to prevent oil restriction and ensure proper oil flow, and a silicone anti-drainback valve to protect against dry starts – it also lasts longer than Nitrile valves. A heavy gauge steel base plate and a heavy gauge case provide durability while a spiral-wound center tube reinforces internal strength.

Reaping the dividends of technology

“Improving performance through sophisticated engineering has been key for Bosch in the automotive industry for more than 100 years,” Nunez said, “and high performance technology products, such as the DistancePlus oil filter, are yet another milestone in that history of innovation.” The Bosch DistancePlus high performance oil filter is available in the United States, Canada and Mexico. A relatively inexpensive service item compared to tires and brakes, investing in a high performance oil filter can help a vehicle go the distance plus, Nunez said.

Spend your tax refund on maintaining your vehicle Carcare.org

How will you spend your tax refund? Flat-screen TV? IPod? Clothes? The Car Care Council has a better idea for your money: spend it on your second biggest investment, your car. “Whether it’s an oil change, replacing brakes or new belts and hoses, that periodic repair bill is a drop in the bucket compared to monthly payments on a new car,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. “The bottom line is that a properly maintained vehicle is safer, more dependable, more fuel efficient, less polluting and more valuable. The smartest way to get a solid return on investment is to keep your car through what we call the ‘Cinderella Era’. It’s that period of time after the payoff when your car is still in great shape and needs only modest repairs.”

The Car Care Council estimates that more than $62 billion in vehicle maintenance and repair is not performed every year, evidence that there is considerably more that consumers should be doing to protect their automotive investment. “We advise our clients that if they want a 10-percent increase on their investments every year they need to cut down on their expenses,” said Terry Mulcahy, vice president of investments for R.W. Baird in Mequon, Wis. “A new automobile is for most people their second biggest investment next to a home, so a great way to save money and increase financial assets is to hang onto their current vehicle rather than buy a new one every few years. Budgeting for and doing preventative maintenance on your car is one of the best ways to cut your costs and keep your car.”

It’s time for the 21st century tune-up 3

Grand Forks Herald/Friday, April 16, 2010

Carcare.org

Times are changing...cars are changing. One of the biggest changes in today’s automotive industry is the perception of a “tune-up.” Ask 10 vehicle owners their definition of a tuneup and chances are there’ll be 10 different answers. The classic “tune-up” was once the heart of the automotive business and contrary to some beliefs, today’s modern vehicles still need tune-ups to keep them performing at the most efficient levels. The tune-up was historically associated with the routine replacement of key ignition system parts like spark plugs and ignition points, along with some basic adjustments to help “tune” the engine. Mounting pressure for increased fuel economy and lower emissions drove the car manufacturers to adopt electronics and to do away with ignition points in the ‘70s, along with the carburetor in the middle ‘80s. As the pace of technology quickened, the procedures required to perform a traditional tune-up changed dramatically. Highly sophisticated ignition and fuel systems are now the norm, using one or more onboard computers to control critical engine and transmission management functions. Things that were once handled mechanically are now controlled electronically through the widespread use of onboard computer technology. Because vehicles have changed so much over the years, the Car Care Council has introduced the 21st Century Tune-up. This program is designed to help re-define and educate motorists as to what a tune-up should consist of on today’s modern vehicles. “There is a misconception that today’s modern vehicles don’t need tune-ups because they never break down, but that simply is not true,” said Rich White, executive director of the Car Care Council. As part of the 21st Century Tune-up on today’s modern vehicles, the following systems should be inspected: ■ battery, charging and starting. ■ engine mechanical. ■ powertrain control (including onboard diagnostic checks). ■ fuel. ■ ignition. ■ emissions. Vehicle owners ask for tuneups for a variety of reasons, including improving performance, maintaining reli-

To help ensure good performance, fuel economy and emissions, the Car Care Council also recommends that motorists take the time necessary to become familiar with their vehicle from every aspect. Study the owner’s manual to become thoroughly acquainted with the operation of all systems. Pay special attention to the indicator lights and instruments. “The ‘Be Car Care Aware’ campaign is about helping motorists make informed decisions about their vehicles’ care

and maintenance,” said White. “With the 21St Century Tuneup, we will continue to help vehicle owners make great strides in reducing vehicle neglect.” A new brochure is available that familiarizes motorists with the opportunities for preventive maintenance in and around their vehicle. The brochure contains information about the “Be Car Care Aware” campaign, a full-size schematic of vehicle parts, components and maintenance recommendations. Tire shopping: Like shoe shopping, for your light truck Grand Forks Herald/Friday, April 16, 2010

Car Care News Service

You wouldn’t wear sandals in the snow. And sneakers at a wedding would be quite out of place. Just as proper footwear is critical to your comfort and correct body alignment, appropriate tires are vital to affecting the overall performance and handling of your vehicle. If you’ve shod your SUV with this weekend’s “four for $99” special, you can expect an underwhelming experience on the roadways. The wrong tire does little to benefit the vehicle wearing it. The good news – optimizing your vehicle’s performance is as simple as shopping for the right shoe. When choosing tires – just like shoes – start by looking for the proper fit. Take a moment to realize how you plan to use your vehicle and then understanding basic tire designs can help you select the right one for the job. With the increasing popularity of light trucks and SUVs, tire manufacturers have worked diligently to offer many tire options. Highway or rib design tires provide traction on wet and dry surfaces. The tread block elements are aligned in a rib pattern with wide grooves to help resist hydroplaning. If you’re one of those 90+percent who never take their SUV or pickup off-road, these tires provide long mileage, a comfortable ride and excellent handling performance. Like the casual loafer, these tires are made for everyday use, commuting to work and for those family vacations. A tire marked “A/T” is designed for all-terrain use but also performs well on the highway. An all-terrain tread has many independent blocks separated by large grooves for off-road traction. Varied sizes and shapes of

tread blocks minimize highway noise. The A/T could be compared to a tennis shoe: comfortable and dependable, but only able to handle mildly rugged conditions. If you run off-road only occasionally, for instance weekend camping trips, or see a lot of gravel in your daily driving, the A/T is your “shoe”. An A/T tire might offer options that an off-road enthusiast would enjoy, but it is not as aggressive as the M/T tire. A tire designated with an “M/T” is used for “MaxTraction.” These dutiful soldiers easily handle muddy and rocky surfaces frequented by the serious adventurer. The M/T tire is the “hiking boot” of tires. Rugged tread elements with large tread voids offer excellent traction to handle the most severe driving conditions. Whether charging up a sand dune, climbing over rocks or heading down the trail, look for the M/T tire. An “A/S” denotes all-season tires which are dependable for many road conditions. For severe snow conditions, a mountain snowflake pictograph with an M+S represents the industry’s standard for tires, much like snow boots, designed for wintry conditions. When shopping for tires, don’t be intimidated by the choices. Think of it as a chance to shop for shoes — for your automobile. Search for the right combination of comfort, style and performance to suit your vehicle. Size up options by visiting your local tire dealer or retailer, the professionals who want to help you “put your best foot forward.” For more information visit www.bridgestonetire.com, www.tiresafety.com, or phone the Bridgestone/Firestone customer service representatives at 1.800.807.9555.

Help prevent vehicle rust Car Care News Service

Small stones and debris kicked up from passing vehicles can hit your car and chip the paint, exposing vulnerable sheet metal. In time, the exposed sheet metal can begin to corrode and rust, compromising your vehicle’s good looks and at the same time lowering its value. Many automotive dealerships and independent installers offer a protective film to help guard vehicles’ painted surfaces from this kind of damage. Paint protection film is made of tough, durable urethane film, yet it’s clear enough to be virtually invisible so your vehicle’s appearance remains unchanged. The tough urethane film takes the brunt of damaging road debris, bug damage and weathering when professionally applied to painted surfaces, including the front end, side mirror backs, wheel wells, door edges, fenders, bumper areas and more.

Find your auto tech now, before you need him 5

Grand Forks Herald/Friday, April 16, 2010

Car Care News Service

Moving into a new area, who’s the most important professional you seek out? Your family doctor, of course, a dentist, your pharmacist and, somewhere down the road… your auto mechanic. The decision on your car care professional is important. Further, that should be made when you’re in control of the situation, not when the car breaks down and can’t be driven. Whether you’re a college student headed to a strange town or a senior citizen moving to a retirement community, finding the right service shop warrants research. Making that selection sooner rather than later helps. Most car owners, being concerned about repair costs, want to deal with facilities in which they have faith. The problem arises when “blind” faith gets in the way of good judgment. The answer, of course, is to know your car and its needs, a message that long has been espoused by NASCAR and strongly supported by the Be Car Care Aware program – an educational campaign that has established October as National Car Care Month. “You don’t have to know HOW to fix your car,” says a Goodyear Gemini automotive technician and member of the NASCAR Performance Network. “You just should know something about things like brake pads and air filters and other parts that need periodic attention. If your mechanic says you’re overdue for an air filter, it’s good to know what he’s talking about.” So how should you go about finding this “good” mechanic, the honest guy who will help you through the maze of car care? There are many ways to begin the search, but NASCAR offers a shortcut: Just log on to www.nascar.com/autoservice. Here, the NASCAR Performance Network lists of over 8,000 repair shops that can be helpful to any motorist seeking maintenance and repairs. Simply enter your zip code to find a quality repair shop in your neighborhood. Beyond that, your neighborhood welcoming organization,

Because most of us tend to procrastinate on auto repairs, much less the search for someone to do them, you may find yourself rushed into this discomfort zone. It’s a case for researching early. Even old timers in a community may benefit by learning what’s new in the car care business. When the time does arise,

how do you know who’s the best shop to call? Your phone directory may help, especially if it lists the shop’s certifications and affiliations. Word of mouth at community get-togethers usually provides excellent feedback. Another excellent source is via listings on the internet. Among sources are ASE (National Institute For Automotive Service Excellence) and Automotive Service Association. Additionally, the Car Care Council provides a listing of more than 60,000 auto parts retailers, repair facilities and body shops as well as engine installers. A few questions to ask yourself as you seek you your tech: ■ How was the phone rapport? ■ Did I find the shop clean? ■ Was I treated courteously? ■ Was my car’s problem explained to me in layman’s language? ■ Did the shop walls display certificates of achievement? ■ Was this shop recommended or did you find it via research? Then, after the repairs: ■ Was the invoice explained? ■ Did it compare favorably with the estimate? If applicable, was warranty or guarantee of satisfaction discussed? ■ Would you recommend this shop to a friend?

Plenty of opportunities for careers in auto repair 6

Grand Forks Herald/Friday, April 16, 2010

Car Care News Service

An indisputable fact of American life: our enduring love affair with our vehicles, some defining this as our freedom of mobility. Freedom becomes the active word. Another fact of American life is our shortage of people to repair these 233 million vehicles. The Bureau of Labor Statistics’ forecasts that repair shops nationwide face an annual shortage of about 35,000 auto technicians through 2010. While the shortage is serious and could become increasingly so, the good news is that this situation identifies an excellent field of opportunity for young people looking for a satisfying career. That old label of an auto mechanic as a “grease monkey,” fortunately has gone out with high button shoes. “The reality is,” says Mark Boswell of Goodyear Gemini Automotive Care, “that auto technicians are highly trained specialists typically holding well-paying jobs in comfortable surroundings.” Addressing this issue, the industry emphasizes that opportunities present themselves to women in positions ranging from repair technicians to service advisers to parts and accessory sales. The industry is actively soliciting women who might be seeking careers with excellent benefits, opportunities seldom found in many fields. ASE (National Institute For Automotive Service Excellence) for years has certified women for positions in the automotive service and parts industry, further underscoring the fact that automotive repair no longer is gender specific. The Car Care Council now has a Women’s Board consisting of women who are active in the industry in positions ranging from public relations to shop ownership to parts and equipment sales. Women often are found to be adept in computer technology, less inclined to be intimidated by computers than men. Regardless of gender, the pay scale is good. The national average salary for an auto technician in 2002 was $41,588, according to the National Automobile Dealers Association. “Now, good technicians can make $70,000 with a little expe-

High tech training is indispensable and, therefore, valuable.” It’s a challenging field. Being an automotive technician is a job that requires detective skills because you have to keep digging at it until you figure it out. It’s not unusual for some technicians to take specialized

courses five or six times a year. They also are encouraged to become ASE certified, which increases their value to the workplace and significantly can increase hourly wages. In addition to independent service facilities, including specialty stores, the ever-expanding motorsports sector may be the magnet to attract people. It’s an exciting field and can be lucrative for bright, energetic young technicians. For some automotive enthusiasts, many of whom are NASCAR fans, the idea of working with a race team could be a dream come true. A head

In addition to general training programs and those related to racing, NTI offers manufacturer-specific advanced training for several makes of vehicles. Further to enhance the public image of auto mechanics, NASCAR has partnered with MagicDust Television to launch “NASCAR Angels” – a weekly reality TV show hosted by NASCAR legend Rusty Wallace – that demonstrated the importance of regular car maintenance. Joined by NASCAR drivers and crew chiefs, each week a team of automotive professionals from Goodyear Gemini facilities armed with NASCAR Performance automotive products, work on tight deadlines in true pit stop action as deserving families see their cars restored to tip-top condition. “NASCAR Angels” complements the consumer education efforts of the automotive industry’s “Be Car Care Aware” campaign and, with NASCAR flair, shows the importance of technicians in America.

Keep your vehicle’s engine ‘humming’ with regular oil and air filter changes

Grand Forks Herald/Friday, April 16, 2010

Car Care News Service

Dust, dirt and grime are all enemies to the longevity and efficient performance of your vehicle’s engine. To prevent engine damage, your vehicle is equipped with various filters — air and oil among them. “Changing filters at factoryrecommended intervals helps your vehicle last longer and perform better immediately and well into the future,” says Ramon Nuñez, Director of Filtration for Bosch, joint venture owner of Purolator Filters NA LLC. Purolator, which invented the automotive oil filter in 1923, is a leading supplier of high quality automotive filters to the North American aftermarket. ■ Oil filter – Of all automotive filters, probably the best known is the oil filter. Most

drivers know that a regular oil and filter change should top their vehicle’s list of maintenance items. According to Nuñez, “Dirt in oil poses great risks. Modern engines are manufactured to precise tolerances and operate under high stress. As the engine turns, the oil pump circulates oil throughout the engine to ensure all components function smoothly, with minimal friction. Dirt particles in the oil can ‘score’ or scratch the surfaces of engine components, eventually requiring engine overhaul or replacement. And while some oils have additives that extend their service life, they don’t do anything to rid the engine of grit and contaminants. Only regular oil and filter changes can do that.” Purolator’s PureONE oil filter offers 99.9 percent filtration

efficiency – the highest in the aftermarket today. PureONE traps nearly 13 grams of microscopic contaminants (equal to 31 standard size paper clips) including dirt and metal shavings. ■ Air filter – Just as with oil filters, the media in air filters is specially engineered to trap airborne contaminants that

can enter and harm the engine. Clogged or inferior air filters can allow dirt and dust particles in the air to get trapped between the piston rings and cylinder walls resulting in excessive oil consumption and reduced efficiency and power. Furthermore, a vehicle’s engine operates by taking in 9 10,000 gallons of air for each

7

gallon of fuel it consumes. The smooth flow and cleanliness of this air determines how well the engine performs or how quickly it wears out. A clogged air filter increases fuel consumption and compromises performance. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, replacing a clogged air filter not only protects against engine damage but also improves gas mileage by as much as 10 percent. “The PureONE air filter features the company’s exclusive Micronic filtration media which has twice the capacity for trapping particles of dirt compared to conventional air filters,” Nuñez said. “Using quality oil and air filters on your car is the best insurance you can buy to prevent costly engine repairs down the road,” says Nuñez.

Take control of your Windshield wipers — a driver’s first line of defense in bad weather vehicle’s safety — 8

Grand Forks Herald/Friday, April 16, 2010

Car Care News Service

Whatever the season, bad weather can come upon us at any time — and all year around. Whether it is pouring rain or a hailstorm during the spring and summer months, or a snowstorm in the winter, it is our windshield wipers that we rely upon to help us drive safely through bad weather. “Yet, our research shows that many motorists fail to regularly inspect their vehicle’s windshield wipers and change them as needed,” said Tom Vasis, Group Product Manager, Wiper Systems for Bosch, the world’s largest supplier of wiper blades to vehicle manufacturers and the aftermarket. Results of vehicle check-ups during the 2008 National Car Care Month in April, and Fall Car Care Month in October, indicate that nearly 80 percent of the vehicles that passed through the inspection lanes needed service and parts. And windshield wipers were among the top problems. Approximately, 15 percent of vehicles needed fresh front windshield wipers and 10 percent needed rear windshield wipers. Properly operating windshield wipers are as crucial to safe driving in bad weather as good eyesight is to our overall mobility. And driving visibility can be markedly improved simply by replacing worn out wiper blades — a relatively inexpensive item — with new premium-grade bracketless blades (sometimes referred to as ‘beam blades’) that are designed to provide a clean windshield even in the worst weather conditions.

Advanced wiper blade technology

In 2005, Bosch introduced ICON an ultra performance, bracketless wiper blade for the front windshield. The ICON bracketless blade’s unique design combines dual rubber technology, an exclusive weather shield connector system and an integrated aerodynamic wind spoiler. The enclosed steel tension springs prevent the steel brackets and joints from being exposed preventing snow and ice build-up and resulting in a clean and

perfect wipe with no missed spots or streaks all year around in rain, sleet or snow. With modern windshields becoming more curved due to emphasis on aerodynamics for the sake of fuel efficiency, the most significant aspect of bracketless technology is its even distribution of pressure along the entire length of the blade. The flow of air over the wind spoiler creates down force, which applies exceptionally uniform pressure along the entire length of the dual rubber wiping element. This helps it to hug the windshield more uniformly, even in severe wind or at high speed. Plus the exclusive fx dual-rubber compound reduces ‘chatter’ and makes for a longer performance life. The Bosch ICON offers up to 20 percent longer life than other premium wiper blades. According to Vasis, 35 percent of new European vehicles are currently equipped with bracketless blades and it is estimated that 40 percent of new U.S. domestic vehicles will be equipped as well by 2010. Bracketless wiper blades are specifically designed to improve driver visibility in snow, mist, drizzle and heavy rain, Vasis said. The ICON’s design is based on Bosch’s highly advanced OE (original equipment) Aerotwin blade, which was introduced in 1999 and is currently installed in over 33 million vehicles in operation in Europe and North America. Bosch ICON bracketless blades bring the same proven wiping performance to the aftermarket. “Bosch ICON aftermarket wiper blades represent an upgrade for most vehicles that are currently equipped with conventional blades,” said Vasis. The correct fit for a vehicle is based on a combination of the blade length and the curvature of the windshield. Bosch recommends consulting the catalog on its Web site for the exact part number for any application. Recently, Bosch introduced the new Evolution all season bracketless wiper blade based on the latest patented bracketless technology. Evolution represents a new, more affordable tier in premium grade Bosch

wiper blade technology designed to provide excellent performance and value.

Bracketless wiper technology on the race track

ICON’s ability to hold its own across a wide range of driving conditions and all-season extremes, has prompted the company’s involvement in Grand Am road racing with the Bosch ICON Challenge. As a result, Bosch’s bracketless ICON wiper blades are used in the Rolex and KONI Challenge series of Grand American Road Racing throughout North America. “Bosch ICON wiper blades used in racing are exactly the same ICON wiper blades that a motorist can install on his personal vehicle,” said Wolfgang Hustedt, North American Motorsports Manager for Bosch. “At highway speeds or race speeds, ICON provides the same level of performance because of the wind spoiler that channels the air to provide additional down force. In addition, ICON maintains this degree of performance longer than other blades because its exclusive fx dual rubber technology virtually eliminates chatter and provides extended life,” Hustedt said.

Like your car’s brake system, the steering and suspension systems are key to your car’s safety. Together, they largely determine your car’s ride and handling. The Car Care Council recommends having your vehicle’s steering and suspension systems checked regularly, at least once a year and usually with a wheel alignment. “Over time, steering and suspension components wear out and require replacement. The suspension system maintains the relationship between the wheels and the frame or unibody, and interacts with the steering system to provide vehicle control,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “Regular checks are critical to the safety of your car.” Symptoms of steering and

suspension wear: ■ Pulling. ■ Uneven tire wear. ■ Noise and vibration while cornering. ■ Loss of control. Several factors that affect steering and suspension wear include driving habits, operating conditions, vehicle type and the frequency of regular maintenance such as chassis lubrication and wheel alignment. Questions to ask a technician: ■ Is there anything I can do to help the steering and suspension systems on my car last longer? ■ How does the work being performed eliminate the symptoms my car exhibited or my complaint? ■ Are there any related services my car needs while this service is being performed?

Dispelling the myths Car Care News Service

As the weather begins to warm up for most of the country, drivers begin thinking of spring and the services needed to maintain their vehicles now that winter has passed. Unfortunately, it’s during this time of year, that automotive myths are often unintentionally perpetuated. Knowing which stories are myths and which ones are fact can be difficult. Because of that, NAPA’s 2009 Technician of the Year, Jack Gregory, is dispelling some common myths to keep everyone’s vehicle running smoothly in 2010. Myth: Filling your cooling system with all water and no

has been a leader in windshield wiper systems for more than 75 years. Bosch developed the first electric windshield wiper system in 1926, and has been responsible for many new developments in wiper technology, including the first intermittent windshield wiper in 1971 and the two-component wiper blade element in 1994.

anti-freeze will save you money while not harming your vehicle. Fact: The vehicle’s cooling system requires a mixture of half water, half anti-freeze. “Too much anti-freeze causes the vehicle to run on higher than optimal temperatures,” cautions Gregory. “Too much water can cause lower operating temperatures and possible freezing.” Myth: Driving at 56 mph will give you the best fuel economy. Fact: Although most vehicle manufacturers base their product’s gas mileage at 56 mph, driving at that speed doesn’t guarantee the best gas mileage. Keeping a consistent speed, whether it’s 25 mph or 65 mph,

will ensure the best fuel economy. Myth: Over inflating tires helps with gas mileage. Fact: Over inflated tires cause wear in the middle of the tire. Under inflated tires causes wear on the outside of the tire. “Drivers should inflate tires to the recommended level to maintain maximum fuel economy and improve the life of the tires,” says Gregory. Myth: Driving closely behind an 18-wheeler will protect you from headwinds and allow your car to use less gas. Fact: Driving closely behind an 18-wheeler doesn’t help with gas mileage, is dangerous and can be illegal. A sudden stop from the 18-wheeler could

(17 inch, 22 inch, 28 inch) are available. While there is no difference in length, there is a significant difference in the preformed radius that is built into the tension springs of the blade to properly work with the curvature of the windshield. To ensure this level of performance, Bosch tests each vehicle for which it makes an ICON recommendation. Both front and rear wipers are equally important service items that need to be checked and changed periodically. For best results, Bosch recommends replacing them every spring and fall. Additionally, wipers work in concert with the washer fluid to help keep the windshield – front and rear – clean while driving.

Some cars have two reservoirs, one located in front under the hood and one located in the back for the rear windshield washer. Check the owner’s manual to find the locations of the reservoirs and keep them full, especially during the winter months. Today, Bosch operates the world’s largest windshield wiper factory in Tienen, Belgium. This facility produces 350,000 windshield wipers every day, and manufactures 700 different types of blades. In 1999, Bosch introduced the Aerotwin “bracketless” blade for OE applications. For more information on Bosch automotive aftermarket products visit www.boschautoparts.com.

Replace your vehicle’s belts, hoses regularly 10 Grand Forks Herald/Friday, April 16, 2010

Care Care News Service

Losing a belt today can mean big trouble for the engine because serpentine belts are used on most engines to turn the water pump, alternator, power steering and air-conditioning compressor. If a belt snaps, everything is lost and you may be stranded. Older cars use individual V-belts for these various accessories. A blown hose could result in an overheated engine and can cause additional engine damage. “It’s not easy to know the true condition of a belt hose by its outward appearance, because most belts and hoses fail from the inside out,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “The Car Care Council urges replacing belts, radiator and heater hoses at specific recommended intervals to prevent your car from breaking down.” Rubber hoses can become hard and brittle, deteriorating with age and exposure to heat, causing the hose to split, blister or leak. Belts also break down with heat, mileage and age. Every time a belt passes around a pulley, it bends. Flexing produces heat that causes the rubber to harden over time. In addition, if the belt is loose or slips, the wear process can be accelerated. Typical service for belts and hoses: ■ Hoses should be checked at each oil change for age hardening (or softening) by pinch-

Any hose that feels rock hard or mushy is due for replacement. Leaking, visible cracks, blistering or any other visible damage on the outside of the hose would also indicate a need for replacement. ■ The clamps should be replaced when new hoses are installed. ■ V-belts should be replaced every three to four years or 40,000 to 50,000 miles. ■ V-belts and serpentine belts should be checked for looseness. ■ Replace the timing belt between 60,000 and 90,000 miles or based on the interval specified in the owner’s manual. nearly one-third of all cars and light trucks have belts or hoses that should probably be replaced. 80 percent of vehicles need service Car Care News Service

Results of vehicle check-up events at community car care events across the country in April and October 2008 revealed that 80 percent of vehicles need service or parts, the Car Care Council reported today. The unsatisfactory condition of vehicles also reinforces the continued need for consumer education about the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair. An analysis of vehicle inspection forms, submitted from event coordinators in several states, shows that 80 percent of the vehicles checked during National Car Care Month in April and Fall Car Care Month in October needed parts replacement, service or fluids. For example, nearly one out of every 10 vehicles had the check engine light on. The top problem areas were motor oil, windshield wipers, air filters, belts and hoses and lights. “Vehicle check-up events are typically the focus of community car care events sponsored by repair shops, parts stores or distributors in cooperation with local vocational schools, media, civic groups and others,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “While these events are free to consumers and serve as community-relations builders, most aftermarket businesses

who participate experience an increase in sales and customers as a result.” When checking lubricants and fluids, the three top failure rates were: low, overfull or dirty motor oil at 32 percent; inadequate washer fluid levels at 23 percent, and low, leaky or dirty coolant at 23 percent; Transmission, brake, power steering and clutch fluids were also checked and had failure rates of 17 percent and below. Approximately 15 percent of vehicles had front windshield wiper failures and 10 percent needed service to rear wipers. At least one belt was reported as unsatisfactory in 18 percent of the vehicles inspected, and 7 percent required at least one new hose. New air filters were needed in 18 percent of the vehicles, while 7 percent needed new PVC filters. The check engine light was on in 9 percent of the vehicles. Battery cables, clamps and terminals needed maintenance in 10 percent of the vehicles inspected, while 9 percent of the batteries were not properly held down. Eleven percent had either a green, dark or clear/yellow charge indicator light. Improperly inflated tires were found on 15 percent of the cars and 12 percent had worn tread and were in need of replacement.

When brakes talk, drivers should listen Car Care News Service

When it comes to driving safely, it’s easy to take your vehicle’s ability to stop for granted – until you really need it. According to brake expert Akebono, your brakes often reveal possible serious situations when they make noise, pull, judder – another term for vibrate – or feel soft. Addressing these symptoms promptly enhances your safety and may save time and money in the long run. Squealing noises soon after a brake job may indicate there is a problem. You should return to the shop where the work was done as soon as possible, to have the brakes checked out by a technician. Installing premium brake pads, calipers and rotors may cost a bit more up front, but often provides noiseand vibration-free operation and longer pad life. In some instances, however, brake squealing simply indicates the pads are worn down and those squeaking wear indi-

cators are doing their job. The abrasive nature of many traditional brake pads against the rotor may also cause squealing. Low quality rotors could be the noise culprit, as well. Neither of these situations is ideal, but the resulting noise is more annoying than anything else. Groaning noises also can be caused by low quality or abrasive brake pads. Squealing and groaning can both be minimized by installing premium brake system components. Have your installer use the same type of pad fitted as original equipment or an upgrade pad. Ultra-premium ceramic pads, such as Akebono’s ProACT brand, are now available for virtually all domestic, Japanese and European models. When your brakes are applied and the vehicle pulls to one side, low tire pressure may be at fault. But, it can also mean a brake caliper is sticking, leaking or not sliding properly due to corrosion. This can

lead to uneven brake pad and rotor wear, reducing the life of the pads and causing steering wheel judder or vibration. The rotor may be able to be machined smooth, but this is not a long-term fix. A corroded caliper or rotor may need to be replaced. A trained technician can assess the situation and fix it right the first time. When air or water gets into the brake system, you may experience a soft-pedal feel. Improper bleeding and general corrosion are typically the culprits. Air in the system forces you to push harder on the brake pedal than normal to stop. Water can adversely affect caliper performance by causing brake fluid to boil prematurely. This can result in a significant loss of stopping power. It is best to have the brake fluid changed as recommended. Motorists can learn a lot by paying attention to what their brakes have to say. It can be a key to being both safe on the road – and with their money.

Tips on ways to save at the pump from NASCAR Grand Forks Herald/Friday, April 16, 2010

Car Care News Service

Drive-offs at the pump are becoming more and more of a problem these days for gas stations everywhere. High gas prices will do that to a person; surely you can sympathize … Perhaps Sunoco could hook up a discount for avid NASCAR fans? Until then, and before you go breaking any laws, stop and do your research on how to be more fuel efficient and get better gas mileage. We called on a professional NASCAR catch-can man for help. Of course, during a race, NASCAR drivers fly through an abundance of fuel because cars can average 190 mph. “We may go 200 mph on the track, but I always keep it under 70 mph on the highway.” As a rule of thumb, you can assume that each 5 mph you drive over 60 mph is like paying an additional $0.20 per gallon for gas. Here are more tips to keep in mind to save you money at the pump: ■ Make sure your tires stay rotated and balanced; it will make the ride smoother resulting in better gas mileage. ■ Keep your tires properly inflated and you could improve gas mileage by more than $1.50 every time you fill your tank. The recommended tire pressure for your vehicle is located on a sticker inside your driver-side door or noted in your owner’s manual. ■ Service your vehicle often and stay on top of regular oil changes ■ Follow the recommend octane level for your vehicle ■ Drive your vehicle efficiently and lose the lead foot; aggressive driving (speeding, rapid acceleration and braking) wastes gas. ■ Use cruise control ■ Choose a more fuel-efficient vehicle. The difference between a car that gets 20 MPG and one that gets 30 MPG amounts to $663 per year.

Balancing wheels and peace of mind Avoiding a 12

Car Care News Service

Properly balanced wheels have long been recognized to help provide improved ride quality, better gas mileage and reduced tire wear, making wheel balancing an important part of car care and maintenance. For decades wheel weights have largely consisted of chunks of lead clamped to the wheel rim. Lead has traditionally been used to make wheel weights because it is cheap and heavy, allowing the use of relatively small weights to balance wheels. However, the highly toxic metal can cause brain damage and other nervous-system disorders in people. Each year an estimated 70,000 tons of lead are used globally to manufacture wheel weights. stalled vehicle Carcare.org

The stalled car syndrome, more noticeable on our roadways than in our driveways, has been with us for generations. But it becomes more critical with increased population. Beyond missed appointments or being late for work it also results in the condition known as road rage. Not only can a disabled vehicle have an annoying “ripple effect” that goes beyond the immediate scene, it can be disastrous for the driver who is left vulnerable to roadside crime or to the elements. “Don’t blame your car,” says Rich White, a Car Care Council spokesperson. “It can’t drive itself to the shop and ask for an oil change or new spark plugs. Considering how dependent we are on our cars, it’s surprising how we take them for granted. An old battery or badly worn tire has its way of forewarning us that it’s going to let us down, but we tend to wait for the inevitable. “Nearly eighty percent of the thousands of vehicles driven through our check lanes during National Car Care Month fail inspection. Most discrepancies are due to owner neglect and can be corrected at little or no cost.”
