Davies beat Minot 41-10 in the state title game as Aidan Hartness passed for 132 yards and one touchdown -- a 75-yarder to twin brother Tristan Hartness -- and also rushed for a pair of TDs. West Fargo, Fargo South and Red River also were playoff qualifiers, with Red River and West Fargo eliminated in the quarterfinals and South in the semifinals, a 39-31 loss to Davies.

Fargo Davies: In last year’s state title game, Davies started only four seniors on both offense and defense. Ty Jochim (1,257 rushing yards) and J.D. Arguelles (613 rushing yards) are a strong 1-2 backfield combo and Jacob West, Sam Hooey, Reed Jacobson and Deyton Slama return to the starting line. The unknown is who replaces graduated all-state quarterback Aidan Hartness. Four of the top six tackle leaders (Arguelles, Tanner Boyanovsky, Conor Rayl and Mitch Vetter) return on defense. Fargo South: Minus graduated Division I recruits James Johannesson and Ty Brooks in the backfield, South will rely more on a defense that returns nine starters. Top playmakers are linemen Tyson Lytle and Cale Dunwoody, linebackers David Boisjolie and Bucky Skiple and safety Gus Siaway. Dunwoody, Lytle and Lars Erickson return to the starting line in an offense that will look to Siaway

and Zander Luckoski in the backfield and Jack Pifer at quarterback to be productive. Red River: The Roughriders have the potential for a big-play offense geared around allstate quarterback Derek Murph (114-184 passing, 1,374 yards). He has an all-state target in Braedan Hanson (46-576 receiving) and Casey Schumacher (546 rushing yards) became a bigger part of the offense late last season. All-state linebacker Zak Kuntz leads the defense. The Riders have limited experience on their offensive line. West Fargo: The Packers return only two starters on both sides of the ball -quarterback Creighton Pfau and tight end Alex Talley on offense and ends Talley and Ben Dirks on defense. But West Fargo’s junior varsity team was unbeaten last season. West Fargo figures to be strong on the line with a group led by Brandon Metz, Zach Willis and Hunter Ulmer. Power back Chase Teiken and speedy Dante Genova will be the backfield tandem.

St. Mary’s also eliminated the East Region’s Wahpeton in the semifinals and Central Cass in the quarterfinals. Grafton was eliminated in the first round. Also in the mix this season is Hillsboro-Central Valley, which lost in the first round of last season’s Class A state playoffs.

Grafton: The Spoilers graduated two big offensive playmakers in Tommy Baldwin and Zak Hernandez. Grafton does return five starters on both offense and defense. Sophomore Marcus Niemann and junior Jason Garza rushed for 258 and 160 yards, respectively, last season, and they’ll run behind a line anchored by returning junior starters Landon Einarson and Roberto Lopez. Garza (17-259 receiving) is a veteran in a traditionally pass-oriented offense, but there is no experience at quarterback. End Gilberto Galvin is the top playmaker on defense. Wahpeton: All-state quarterback Carson Zarak (586 rushing yards, 139of-244 for 2,352 yards passing) triggers the offense. Tyler Wohlers (409 rushing yards) also returns to the backfield, while speedster Isaac Erickson (out last season with knee injury) is expected to be a playmaker. Drew Bajumpaa and secondteam all-region Andrew Leinen anchor the line. Kyle Bjugstad, Wohlers and Carl Bjugstad lead the defense. Only two of last season’s top eight tacklers graduated.

Four teams to watch
Central Cass: What to do with Grady Bresnahan? The senior is one of the top returners in the region in rushing (40-258), passing (25-51, 499) and receiving (20-320). The Squirrels may use him at quarterback, wide receiver and running back. Chandler Hesch is a second running threat, while top receivers are expected to be Andrew Roden and Dillin Dooley. The defense builds around Hersch, an allstate linebacker, behind veteran linemen Christian Schmuck, Devin Roesler and Hunter Sall. Fargo Shanley: Shanley, which has been in five of the past six state AA title games (winning three), is short on experience. The offense builds around quarterback Matt Burd (473 rushing yards, 54of-101 passing for 902 yards). Burd and lineman Lane Hallock, both twoway starters, are the only returning starters. Linemen Bruce Mizero, Kevin Wolfe, Mason Ostern and Mitch Alexander and backs Justin Dekeyser and Jake Cava are expected to step in and play key roles.

Harvey-Wells County: The Hornets are strong at the skill positions. Parker Bachmeier (64-of-104, 638 yards) returns at quarterback and H-WC has an experienced backfield with Isaiah Merril, Ridge Walker and Tristin Merril. The blocking unit, where Stephen Rapphuhn is the lone returning starter, needs to be rebuilt. The defense figures to be a strength, with seven starters back. Larimore: The Polar Bears’ power offense will start up front, where junior twin brothers Levi and Caleb Hofer return after both earned all-state honors as offensive linemen last season. The backfield may have a share-the-carries approach between Alex Mutch (68-504), Royce Verkuehlen (63-489), Monty Hendrickson (30-208) and Elijah Holter (18-132). Verkuehlen had a few 100yard rushing games last year. Jacob Tupa and Isaac Holter shared quarterbacking duties and both return. defense, the Aggies appear poised for another title run. The offensive line, anchored by all-stater Spencer Rehovsky, returns intact. Cadyn Hunter (175-1,360) and Jackson Hankey (63-626) are the top two returning rushers in the region and form a potent combination. The top candidate to replace quarterback Jackson Hankey is Levi Cudmore, an all-state receiver. Rehovsky, Hankey, Cudmore and Daman Flaten are top playmakers back on defense. Rugby: While last season’s senior class included seven all-region and five all-state picks, there is returning talent. The offense builds around returning line regulars Blackhawk Jones, Hunter Hager and Spencer Koehmstad. Victor Gronvold (43-585) and Kade Leier (27-249) have big-play potential in the backfield. Anders Johnson succeeds all-state quarterback Brad Heidlebaugh and will be a run/ pass threat. Receiver Ryan Michels averaged 21.5 yards on his 13 catches last season.

Hankinson: Six starters return on both offense and defense. The strength of the offense is the veteran line of Kendrick Lenzen, Trevor Weidner and Cody Mauch. Nathan Geresezk returns after missing last season due to an injury to add further line depth. Korbin Steinwehr and Daniel Round return in the backfield, where Bailey Hernandez moves from receiver and is expected to provide a big-play threat at running back. The Pirates are inexperienced at quarterback. Hatton-Northwood: The high-scoring Thunder graduated most of their skill-position players. Hatton-Northwood will build its offense around a trio of returning linemen, guards Ben Johnson and Dean Ott and tight end Jacob Bilden. The fourth returning offensive regular is Brenden Myron, who switches from receiver to quarterback. Myron, Jaden Bachmeier and Jamie Gorres figure to be the primary ball carriers in more of a run-oriented

offense. The four returning offensive starters also are key players as returning regulars on defense. LaMoure-L-M: A strong group of linemen, led by all-stater Quinn Alo and all-region Hunter Sherman, lead the veterans back from last season’s 10-2 team that had only four seniors on the roster. Drew Thielges is a playmaker at wide receiver. The team is inexperienced in the backfield, where Brady Warcken and Levi Hirschkorn are expected to be the primary ballcarriers. Richland: The Colts are low in numbers (18 out) and short on size with only one 200-pounder on the roster. They’re not lacking in talent. Jake Ihland (196-1,732) and Brady Heyen (109-463) are the first- and sixthranked returning rushers in the region and Nate Myers (56-302) is a power option. Heyen (32-of-78, 506 yards) also is a passing threat in the Richland option offense. There is stability in the blocking unit, with Eli Hansen, Devin Flaa and Alec Heesch returning starters.

At home once again After a season at receiver, Ryan Erickson returns to QB R

yan Erickson is going home on the football field. Erickson grew up playing quarterback. He was the backup at the position as a sophomore at Grand Forks Central. Last season, however, he found himself on the other end of the passing combination. “We moved him to wide receiver last year because Kaleb Binstock was back as our starting quarterback,’’ Central coach Bill Lorenz said. “Ryan is such a good athlete that we wanted to find a way to get him on the field.’’ Binstock graduated last spring. In a skill-position shuffle, Erickson is now Central’s starting quarterback. Last season’s backup, Cody Aarvig, is in the mix in a deep group of running backs that figures to be the strength of the Knights’ offense. “I feel like I’m back home,’’ Erickson said. “Receiver wasn’t in my total comfort zone. I got used to playing it last season. But I’ve always been a quarterback. It feels more natural for me.’’ Erickson does admit that he feels a little rusty after a season
away from throwing the ball. “But I feel like I’ll get some yards in the running game and the passing game will come around,’’ the senior said. The Knights aren’t looking for Erickson to air out the deep ball. Lorenz said the senior’s strength as a passer is in the short and intermediate game. That’s the picture for the Central offense as a whole. The running game will be built around the likes of Bryce Brandon, who rushed for 304 yards last season, Aarvig, Clay Morin and Alex Hagen. Aarvig is considered the most elusive of the quartet. But none are speedsters. Where Erickson figures in that running game remains to be seen. “Ryan is a threat running the ball on rollouts,’’ Lorenz said. “But we won’t focus on his running. We want to keep him healthy. We feel the running backs will be the strength of our offense. Brandon is a physical, hard-nosed kid. Cody is more of a shifty, side-to-side runner. He’s more comfortable out on the edge.

I know where I liked to catch the ball. I’m trying to put the ball in places where it is easier for my receivers. “The experience at receiver has helped me as a quarterback.’’

Bryce, Cody, Clay, Alex -- we’ll look for those kids to make a lot of tackles. They’re not overly big, but they are aggressive and they tackle well. Like the offense, the line depth is an unknown. Other than Hernandez and Knutson, we have a lot of kids who are coming up off the JV team and have to learn the speed of the varsity game.’’

eau Byklum was a part-time starter at quarterback as a sophomore for Climax-Fisher. When the high school football program joined with Sacred Heart to form the Polk County West co-op last season, however, Byklum’s quarterbacking days were over. And Byklum has no problem with that. “I’ve thought a few times about what it would be like to still be quarterback,’’ the senior said. “But I like it when Devin (Evavold) is back there. He’s good at what he does. “And I prefer playing defense. I like hitting people.’’ The quarterbacking situation was part of a smooth transition for Polk County West, which was 2-6 in its initial season. Evavold returns for his senior season after completing 64-of-128 passes for 951 yards. Byklum was part of the blocking unit and, as tight end, caught 6 passes for 59 yards. Evavold took control of the position early, as Byklum suffered a wrist injury shortly before practices started last fall. “They’re both heady quarterbacks, good leaders,’’ said Darrin

hen Zak Kuntz joined the Grand Forks Red River football team as a sophomore, his selection of the No. 40 wasn’t a random choice. That was the number worn by Jon Lizotte and Tyler Gefroh, former standout linebackers for the Roughriders. “Lizotte wore it. Gefroh wore it,’’ Kuntz said. “I wanted to live up to the hype that goes with the number. And coach (Vyrn) Muir told that you had to be a man to wear that jersey.’’ The tradition of No. 40 lives on. Kuntz was a starting linebacker as a sophomore. Last season, he earned all-region and first team all-state honors. As dominant as the 6-foot3, 230-pound Kuntz was last season, the senior faces new roles this season. He’ll move to inside linebacker on defense. “By putting him in the middle, Zak can be a factor no matter which side of the field the ball goes,’’ Muir said. And, on offense, Kuntz figures to become more involved as a ball carrier. He played fullback extensively last season, but had only 30 carries, good for 128 yards. “We want to get Zak the ball more,’’ Muir said. “With his size and strength, he’s a weapon. Our offense is designed to get the fullback the ball. He could even be a third state quarterback and an allstate wide receiver. But we also have Schumacher and Kuntz in the backfield. Schumacher got carries last year. Kuntz was more of a blocking back, but we have to find ways to get him the ball. He’s such a physical kid. We have Buelow and Pearson back on the line, but everybody else on that unit is an unknown.’’

They’re not expecting you. The big hit, that’s fun. It’s fun to have the ball, too. I don’t dance around much; I’m a physical player. “I like to hit. You have to play that way. It’s a big part of the game.’’ Especially for a Red River player wearing No. 40.
About the defense, Muir says: “Our linebacking corps of Kuntz, Schumacher and Soderberg has three pretty darn good football players. Because they’re two-way players, we have to develop some depth. Dukes and Buelow are back on the D-line. Our biggest concern is the secondary. We have to figure out who will be playing there.’’

Fertile-Beltrami: FertileBeltrami gave up an average of 18.1 points a game last season and five of the top six tacklers return in Jorgen Qualley, Noah Harstad, Eli Neufeld, Quinten Desrosier and Ryan Benson. Benson at running back and Jordan Leiting at tight end are expected to be top playmakers in an offense run by first-year starting QB Brady Steffes. There is experience in the blocking unit, with Aaron Kronschnabel, Wyatt Beauchane and Harstad returning regulars. Fosston: The Greyhounds graduated heavily at their offensive skill positions. The strength of the team figures to be its ground game. Leading rusher Sam Manecke (1,226 yards) returns and he’ll run behind a veteran offensive line, with Zach Vig, Cody Baumann, Jack Nelson and Hunter Osmonson all returning regulars. Likewise, the defense will be anchored by a veteran line with Nelson, Osmonson, Baumann and Jaydon Daniel all returning regulars. Mahnomen: The Indians rebuild around their
Barnesville: Seven starters return on offense, including standout quarterback Ethan Ishaug (49-of-91 passing, 877 yards, 232 yards rushing). Connor Meyer, who rushed for 581 yards last season, will miss the early part of the season due to an injury. But there is depth in the backfield with Joey Roste, Jimmy Kletsch, Brady Tweten and speedster Josh Tweten. Guards Owen Jerald and Kieran Johnson anchor a veteran offensive line. The defense also is proven, with eight players back with starting experience. Frazee: The Hornets were hit hard by graduation. New head coach Jim Jacobson does have some key building blocks. Tanner Bachmann, the leading returning rusher in 8AA (1,471 yards) will see time at quarterback as well as running back, where he combines power and shiftiness. Riley Utke (25-394) is one of the section’s top receivers and Jonah Lange returns to anchor the line units. There is depth in the offensive
backfield with Jeff Marshall and Mel Johnson. Hawley: The Nuggets are rich in tradition, having won the last three Section 8AA titles. They’re also short on experience after graduating 20 seniors from last season’s team. The lone starter returning is defensive lineman Travis Baer. Josh Wolbeck at linebacker and Austin Koenig in the secondary also played alot as reserves and figure to be key contributors. Koenig, a speedy back, is the top offensive threat returning after rushing for 529 yards (6.4 per-carry average). Warroad: The Warriors won only one game last season, but have 10 players on both offense and defense who played extensively. Power runner Noah Harren (283 rushing yards) and quarterback Beau Wilmer, (523 passing yards) lead the offense. Lucas Garbe and Jackson Nash anchor the blocking unit. Harren on the line and linebackers Nash and Cam Phrakonekham, who returns after missing last season due to an injury, are playmakers on defense.

Stephen-Argyle and WarrenAlvarado-Oslo took the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds, respectively, into the section playoffs. In the balanced field, however, it was No. 4 Kittson County Central beating No. 3 Win-E-Mac 35-0 in the section championship. Kittson County Central reached the state semifinals before being eliminated 49-0 by eventual champion Grand Meadow. Also in the mix this season is newcomer Kelliher-Northome, which won the Section 7 9-man title last season and was eliminated in the state quarterfinals.

A look ahead to 2015 Four teams to watch
Clearbrook-Gonvick: Only four seniors were on last season’s roster. Quarterback Sam Lavin is a playmaker, leading the team in rushing (958 yards) and passing (45-of-86, 597 yards) last season. Hunter Churness (27-324) is one of the top receivers back in the section. Tristan Bakke also is a returning regular in the backfield. There is experience on the line as John West, Judah Bennett and Nathaneal Dahl are returning regulars. Churness, who paced the team in tackles, leads the defense. Kittson County Central: The perennial section-power Bearcats build around a veteran defense. Lineman Bryden Swenson, linebacker Spencer Billings and defensive backs Ty Diamond, Skyler Slusar and Austin Vagle are returning starters. Quarterback Dylan Olsonawski (62-of-120, 957 yards) is the lone regular back on offense. Billings, Diamond, Vagle and John Karboviak lead a potentially deep group of running backs, with Slusar, Jackson Peterson and
Hunter Olsonawski are top candidates to fill the line. Stephen-Argyle: The Storm have the section’s top returning 1-2 offensive backfield combo in quick backs Justin Yutrzenka (124-930 rushing) and Max Yutrzenka (89-801 rushing). Tight ends Jordan Urbaniak and Isaac Mills provide passing targets as well as blocking on an otherwise all-new offensive line. Chris McGlynn is expected to start at quarterback. There’s experience on defense, with both Yutrzenkas and linemen Mills, Conner Jensen and Jacob Sundby returning regulars. Warren-Alvarado-Oslo: Brice Miller, a starting tight end last season, is switching to the other end of the passing game as he’s moving to quarterback. He gives the Ponies a throwing threat to go with the power running of Hunter Roller. Ozkar Rodriguez and Caleb Srnsky anchor the offensive line. The defense builds are the trio of Srnsky and Roller on the line and Jake Steer in the secondary.

Dilworth-G-F: The Rebels build around quarterback Blake Kragness (58-121, 1,029 yards). The only other offensive starters back are lineman Chet Frink and Tyler Oberg, who switches from tight end to the backfield where he’ll share carries with Ryan Poehls, Garrett Scheel and Eric Watt. Four starters return on defense. EGF Senior High: The Green Wave have some of the top playmakers returning in the section. Trevor Selk is a threat whether running (738 yards) or passing (69-128, 848 yards). Jordan Young (549 yards) is a strong ball carrier, while Cole Hammargren (19-280) and Donny Musgrove (8-146) are top receivers. On the line, Ben Olson is the only returning starter on either side of the ball.

Rocori: Eight starters return on the defense from last season’s 8AAAA championship team, led by lineman Colten Schramel and linebackers Nathan Thorpe and Ryan Vigil. The lone starters back on offense are linemen Jacob Erkens and Tyler Botten and tight end Alec Anderson. Tom Wieber and Nick Warne are expected to be primary ballcarriers. Thief River Falls: The Prowlers build around
a defense that returns starters Wyatt Ortloff, Noah Hawkins, Cole Johnson, Jamcy Kudee and Isaac Olson. Ortloff and Hawkins are playmakers. Lineman Kelby Jobe is the lone starter back on offense. Quarterback Kade Nelson, backs Hawkins, Ian Hutton and Christian Larson and receiver Derrick Newland are expected to be productive. Willmar: The Cardinals, making the switch from Class 5A to Class 4A, return five starters on offense and defense. Zach Radermacher was 58-of-111 for 635 yards as a part-time regular and three of the top four receivers return in Max Doering (26-353), Colten Carlson (22-270) and Max Trochlil (18-220). Junior Brady Reigstad returns on a big, but inexperienced, offensive line.
