This is awkward

don’t celebrate Valentine’s day. A long history of my husband’s bad experiences with his exes (Ahem) and a general lack of experience on my side in terms of stereotypical rom-com romance. As a couple, I think we’re just bad at it and the most romantic nights are the ones where absolutely nothing happens. That being said, this IS a Valentine’s edition so I’ll do my best and paint an ideal

picture of what this day should be like for me, in an alternate universe.

The concept of love and romance is a beautiful thing. Most of the days of the year are packed with suckiness and drama, but for this one day, all that is put aside to make people feel loved and all mushy. To make sure that happens this year for you too, whether it’s for a loved one or for yourself, we’ve got everything you need to make the 14th special. Let’s start with the most romantic thing of all… Food. I’m not talking about ugly eating that cheeseburger, I’m talking about beautiful dinners of delicate nature filled with rich goodness that we love- I’m talking chocolate, oysters, wine and other decadent ingredients that take a normal meal from Meh to Oomph! As a treat, we picked our favourite Valentine’s meals like Wine Brownies, Feta with Ice cream and so much more. We also give you the low down on aphrodisiacs (wink wink) because everyone needs a little help once in a while. But perhaps the firecracker of all this is Ekta Patel’s Pani Puri fusion with tequila that is guaranteed to take that dinner to another level. In this edition, you’ll also find various spots for a great Valentine’s dinner like Kempinksi, Sankara, Four Points and more. For those brunch lovers, we’ve got our top spots and the team from This is Essential share their top spots for dinner. Other than that, this is our first edition of the year and that means a look back to what we loved in 2019 and what we want to carry on through to 2020. You’ll find our favourite restaurants that we’ll definitely be going back to and perhaps my favourite, our top recipes of the year that we don’t want you to forget. This is an exciting year for us, with the launch of the Yummy Kitchen and more exciting publications coming your way and we hope you stick with us through it all! To all you love birds, Happy Valentine’s Day! And if you’re like me, maybe a little effort won’t hurt this year… I’ll give it a try if you will.

Aquafaba You’ve probably heard this word before but here’s an actual guide on what it is and how you can use it. Aquafaba is the viscous water in which legumes like chickpeas have been cooked. The water, most popularly used from chickpeas, is used as a substitute for a number of egg-based dishes. Aquafaba is easy to use and while you enjoy your chickpeas, you can make something easy and tasty on the side. Here are 3 quick and easy recipes you can use with aquafaba:

All you’ll need is 3 tbsp of aquafaba, 1 tsp Dijon mustard, 250ml sunflower oil, 1 tsp white wine vinegar & a pinch of salt and pepper. Whisk up the chickpea water and mustard until frothy then slowly add the oil and emulsify. Finish with the vinegar and seasoning

Yummy. Food. Drink. Life

You’ll need 3 tbsp of aquafaba, 7 tbsp coconut oil, 4 tsp olive oil, 2/3 tsp apple cider vinegar and 1/3 tsp salt. Add melted coconut oil & olive oil slowly to aquafaba and blend using an immersion blender. Blend until you achieve a thick mayo like consistency. Pour it in a container (don’t cover it) and put it in the fridge overnight.

You’ll need 45ml of whiskey, 30ml lemon, 15ml simple syrup, 30ml of aquafaba and a dash of angostura bitters. Put everything in a shaker except the bitters. Shake vigorously, add the bitters then transfer in a glass with ice and garnish with lemon peel.

Looking for more exciting options, I decided to host a Mexican potluck with my foodie friends. Being the “chef” of the group, I needed a crowd-pleasing dish when I happened to glance over and see a bottle of tequila next to the tub of leftover puri’s from the previous night. I immediately started experimenting and even went down the route of pinto beans and avocado as the filling. The task was daunting, so much did go

wrong but after several experiments with ratios and ingredients, and the satisfied grins of my guinea pigs (my family), the dish quickly spiralled into a crowd-pleaser at

Valentine’s Day Plan This is Essential is a platform created for today’s African woman. This is Essential creates lifestyle content - through articles and videos - which highlight stories, products, and services that speak to women and their needs, for the ultimate shoppable experience.

Essential Breakfast Date

L OCATION: Artcaffe, Westminster Branch,

The Westminster Branch is the largest Artcaffe branch to date. It has a very rustic but classical feel to it - with the visible steel structure against the indoor plants, minimal furniture and mosaic tile floors. Very Instagrammable, which is an extra win.

MENU: Whenever we think of a must-have breakfast in Nairobi, Artcaffe’s morning breakfasts served on the cute Kitengela Glass-esque blue platters is the first thing that comes to mind. With their breakfast platters, you get to select what kind of bread, baked beans, style of egg and sausages/ bacon you would prefer. Top it up with a latte or tea and you will have a full belly hours after your date! PRICE POINT: Ranging from KES 350 ($3.5) for a muffin/ pastry and coffee to KES 990 ($9.9) for the breakfast platters, it is ideal for friends hanging out to a family affair.

Essential Coffee Date LOCATION:

Barista & Co, Sarit Centre,

We recently discovered this Barista & Co. branch at the newly opened Sarit Centre. The café has a very chic feel to it and ample natural lighting, with floor to ceiling windows, ideal for taking your best food shots.

Literally coffee lovers heaven, Barista & Co’s hand pressed coffees are the star of the show. You get to pick between the Aeropress, Harion V60 and Siphon coffees. The staff are well versed with the terms and will be happy to explain what each of these terms mean. Their iced coffees are a treat too, with interesting flavors such as mandarin and peppermint mochas. Yum!

Yummy. Food. Drink. Life

They also have heart-warming soups, like our fave butternut soup, salads, while their bakery churns out delectable pastries and desserts like cheesecakes and eclairs. PRICE POINT: Their

coffees range between KES 300 – 400 ($3 - $4), while the edibles range between KES 200 ($2) for a croissant to KES 900 ($9) for a panini.

Essential Lunch Date

The Shamba Café & Shop, Loresho, Nairobi

This location gives us some serious countryside vibes and is a perfect spot for lunch with the girls. It is extremely peaceful and the air is so crisp clean, you almost don’t feel like you’re in Nairobi. Did we mention that Saturday is Farmer’s Market day?! Shopping and eating in one spot, what more could you possibly ask for?

The menu is pretty diverse with multiple options to choose from including a pretty solid kid’s menu. We strongly recommend the pizzas; you won’t regret it.

For drinks, we recommend a budget of about KES 600 - 10,000 ($6-$100) inclusive of wine by the bottle and for food the prices fall between KES 1,000 - 4,000 ($10 - $40).

Essential High Tea Date

LOCATION: Le Grenier a Pain, Riverside Drive, Nairobi AMBIENCE: Looking for a little piece of France in the city of Nairobi? Le Grenier is the place to go. Decked in an industrial décor, this French bakery is the perfect place to go for brunch or high tea. We highly recommend this spot for a high tea date with your mum/ sister/ aunty or girlfriend. MENU: The menu has various options for breakfast, lunch and tea. Their lunch and breakfast options are extremely delicious, but their pastries and deserts take the crown. They are arguably some of the best we’ve tasted in Nairobi, making it the ideal spot for high tea.

For drinks, prices range from KES 200 - 900 ($2 - $90) inclusive of wine by the bottle. For food and pastries, prepare to spend anything between KES 300 - 1,300 ($3 - $13). Pretty fair for this slice of heaven, if you ask us.

Essential Dinner Date LOCATION:

About Thyme, off Peponi Road,

Tucked in a little corner of Westland’s, About Thyme gives us some rustic, almost homely vibes. Perfect for a date with your significant other, the restaurant has a really intimate feel to it, especially in the evening. The lighting is romantic and sets the

mood for the perfect Valentine’s date. The menu is extensive with quite a number of vegetarian options and we can confidently say there is nothing you will pick that you won’t enjoy. We recommend the stuffed chicken breast or the fully loaded burger.

from KES 2000 - 13,000 ($20 - $130) inclusive of wine by the bottle. For the food, you can spend anything between KES 500 - 2,500 ($5 - $25). Whatever you choose to do this Valentines, enjoy your day, after-all it’s just a day like any other.

For drinks, the prices range

This newbie to the Nairobi scene made quite an impact on us when they opened. With their swanky decor, comfortable seating, massive milkshakes and burgers, Grill Shack has become a fast regular choice for us. A personal favourite for us is their cheeseburger with special cocktail sauce and thin crispy fries that quickly become addictive. HASHMI

This Indian BBQ restaurant has been a favourite for years. No matter its location or size, it’s almost a guarantee that whenever people come into town and need a recommendation, Hashmi is top of mind. Now located in the new wing of Diamond Plaza, Hashmi still has our favourites on their menu that we keep coming back for, especially their chicken tikka, butter naan and pili pili chips. OHCHA

From their Build Your Own option to their comforting fixed options, OhCha is a regular whether it’s ordering in or actually going to the restaurant. It doesn’t matter whether you’re in the mood for warm chicken soup, crunchy rolls or the ever-popular pad thai, there’s something for every South East Asian cuisine lover. XIAN

The influx of new Chinese restaurants in Nairobi can make it very hard to pick the right place to find your favourite dish. Let us make that choice easier for you by reintroducing Xian Chinese Restaurant to you. The meals are simple and authentically Chinese whether its dumplings, stir-fried noodles or spring rolls. A dining experience here is a trip to China for your taste buds. JAVA

Java has been a classic and a favourite for years. It’s comforting space and menu has made it our version of the movie diners where everything and nothing happens at Java. From their coffees, chocolate cake, milkshakes and burgers, there are so many favourites on that keep us coming back for more. What’s even better is the number of Java’s that are now popping up everywhere, for example on the way to Naivasha at Buffalo Mall. CHICAGO PIZZA

to our memory, has stayed exactly the same. Their pizzas are rich, tasty and have a unique taste that is hard to find somewhere else. Our personal favourite is their Chicken Delight pizza (Give it a try!), but on days when we’re not craving pizza, their bhajias or even Dahi Puri’s will do the trick. PASTA REPUBLIC

If you love pasta then you must have visited this corner store at the Village Market Food Court. They don’t just make pasta fresh every day that looks like it stepped straight out of a Pinterest board but it tastes just as good. Pass by and order a delicious plate of hot pasta or if you’re in the mood to cook pasta (without kneading for hours) take away a packet or two to cook at home. LA SALUMERIA

This adorable Italian restaurant is located behind Valley Arcade at Dhanjay Apartments in the cute rustic corner. They have been there for over 20 years and has been serving the best Italian food in Nairobi for the longest time. Their wait staff are completely knowledgable on the menu and are excellent at recommending dishes as well as wines, and the Salumeria menu can always be counted on to impress. Whether it’s for a date or group dinner, this restaurant is definitely one we’ll keep coming back to. Our personal favourite is their Boscaiola Fettuccine. SIERRA

It can’t be a surprise that Sierra is on this list. In 2019, they kept the same quality in their dishes while upgrading the decor in their Yaya branch and introducing our palates to a tender, juicy wagyu burger that we just could not get enough of. You can be sure to find us a healthy portion of steak or a lighter plate of sashimi. Maybe 2020 is the year you try one of their Kitchen dinners paired with incredible wine. ABYSSINIA

Nairobians have a running love affair with Ethiopian food and tasting the expertly cooked dishes at this casual restaurant explains why. The traditional decor adds to the warm ambience that makes you want to settle down for more than just one meal. You have the option of going in as a group or taking yourself in for a quick lunch to enjoy their platter for one that lets you sample the best of their menu.

This little hidden gem has been at the Sarit Centre food court for the longest time and

My Top 4 Breakfast Spots in Nairobi Written by @TheKenyanFoodNerd | Zainab

“Who cares if you gain a few pounds over the holidays?” Because holidays are all about eating, right? My advice may seem a little off-track compared to the other tips you’ve likely heard, but you don’t need to deprive yourself, eat only boring foods, or take your treats with a side order of guilt. Instead, by practising a bit of defensive eating- eat a good breakfast and skip lunch, you can tick off ‘go on a diet’ as one of your New Year’s resolutions.People usually don’t take their breakfast habits seriously. Breakfast kickstarts your metabolism, helping you burn calories throughout the day. It also gives you the energy you need to get things done and helps you focus at work or at school. Those are just a few reasons why it’s the most important meal of the day. This city is full of hidden gems- from modern and chic to rustic and cozy spots. It’s your pick,

what do you feel up to? And no matter what type of morning meal you prefer—a cup of strong coffee with a croissant or a full plate of eggs, sausages, and potatoes—we’ve got you covered. TIN ROOF CAFÉ

With their two locations on Langata Road and in Karen, this casual-cool restaurant is known for its great ambience, great services and super-friendly staff. They use locally produced ingredients to assemble their meals that are just as flavorful as they are colourful. The open-air dining area boasts stunning views of the garden making it a great meal-time scenery. This hidden gem is surrounded by colourful Kangas and Kikoys of Langata link shops. We ordered their delicious berry and chia smoothie bowl with Tahini and Greek yoghurt sprinkled with their home-made granola and

Tr i e d & Ta s t e d BRIOCHE

Located at the recently-built spaces at the Alchemist, Brioche is where traditional meets modernity in both food and interiors. The restaurant is most impressive being the treehouse - built into an around the huge tree. Their menu consists of EuroAfrique (Europe and African fusion). On a ‘no-cooking Sunday’ we thought of having something exciting and visited Brioche - and we couldn’t have made a better choice! The hubby ordered the continental brunch and I being a sweet tooth had the French toast topped with vanilla custard cream. They say, good food is way to someone’s heart, and this definitely hit the spot!

their spinach and feta omelette topped with greens- that was made to perfection. LE GRENIER À PAIN

This chic and sophisticated bakery and restaurant will remind you of dainty patisseries that line the streets in Paris. Located along Riverside drive, this place is a piece of Paris in Kenya. From the modern interiors to the warm and genuine décor, everything is very French-like. Whether you’re looking for your breakfast options, or a quick snack or something to soothe your sweet tooth, you’ll be spoilt for choice at this food haven. You will be welcomed by the aroma of freshly baked goodies that will make you want to sit down, order a hot cup of coffee and browse through their wide range of breakfast options that include typical eggs options, crepes, granolas, pastries and much more!

At the heart of Nairobi, this classy restaurant with cosy sofas and unique tables, distressed wood floors, and artful pendant lights make for a seriously serene escape from the hustle and bustle outside. From the traditional British fry-up in all its guises to Danish and French pastries and wonderfully made breakfast combos, this trendy spot venue ticks all the breakfast/ brunch boxes. They serve decent coffees too. We ordered their ‘Kings breakfast’ that consisted of buttermilk pancake, barbeque sausages, bacon, baked beans, sausages and omelette of your choice. This was an ideal breakfast to fuel up our day.

SOUFFLE PANCAKES Just because you’ve started your new year diet doesn’t mean you can’t indulge a little. These light and fluffy pancakes are the perfect Saturday morning treat and don’t require you to have anything but a hand mixer, eggs and your phone to capture that signature jiggle. INGREDIENTS

• • • • • • •

6 tbsp cake flour 2 1/2 tbsp skim milk 1 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp vanilla extract 1/2 tbsp full-fat mayonnaise 3 tbsp granulated white sugar 2 large eggs

1. In a medium bowl, add milk, baking powder, vanilla, mayonnaise and egg yolks. Mix with a whisk until batter is smooth and the mixture is a pale yellow. 2. In a separate bowl whip egg whites until stiff peaks form (about 2-3 minutes.) If you turn the mixing bowl upside down, the meringue will not slide out. 3. Using a spatula, gently fold the meringue slowly adding 1/3 of the meringue into the batter until there are no more white streaks. 4. Bring your pan to low heat. Drop a spatula spoonful of the batter onto the hot pan, then top with an additional ½ spoonful on top of each pancake to help add height and cook it for 3 minutes. 5. Flip them over after 3 minutes and then cook for a further 3 minutes or until both sides are browned. 6. Dust with icing sugar and syrup, and serve immediately.

ACV and set aside to curdle, making vegan buttermilk. 4. In a large bowl, sift the flour, baking powder, and baking soda. Sift the ingredients a second time to better aerate your ingredients. Add the salt. 5. Make a well in the middle of the flour mixture and add the wet ingredients; buttermilk, maple syrup, oil, vanilla extract, lemon zest, and poppy seeds. Stir together until just combined. (Don’t overmix, or your cake will be too dense). 6. Pour the batter into your greased loaf pan, smoothing it out evenly. (Tap the pan gently on your work surface to release any air bubbles). Bake for 20-25 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the middle of the cake comes out clean. 7. Allow to cool completely before frosting. For Cream Cheese Frosting: In a bowl, add all frosting ingredients and mix using a hand mixer until smooth and creamy (or mix in a blender). 8. Spread the frosting over your cooled cake evenly and garnish as desired. (I used poppy seeds and lime for garnish). Serve and enjoy.

NOTES Use the whole turmeric in its natural form which is perfectly bio-available on its own, just like mother nature intended. I use canned coconut milk to avoid the carrageenan that is added to most boxed alternatives. Make sure you heat up your chai as the heat is said to increase the solubility of curcumin (the primary active constituent in turmeric) by 12 times, which may also increase its bioavailability in the body.

• 1 cup of canned coconut milk • 1 cup almond milk • 2 tsp ground turmeric (from Daillies organic) • ¼ tsp ground ginger (from Daillies organic) • ¼ tsp ground cinnamon or 1 cinnamon stick • A pinch ground black pepper • 1 tbs maple syrup METHOD

1. In a sufuria, add all your ingredients. 2. Whisk to combine and warm over mediumlow heat, until hot but not boiling. (The longer you simmer, the stronger and more intense the flavours) 3. Adjust flavour to liking. 4. Serve immediately.

Eco-Friendly Lifestyle?

ew decade, new you. We’ve all begun writing down our bucket list for 2020. But let’s face it, life can get in the way when you’re trying to do your part to save the planet. If this is the case, then fear not: Here are five tips to make fighting climate change easier and kick off the decade on the right foot. DITCH THE PLASTIC

We’ve all heard the mantra: plastic is bad. Fortunately for us in Kenya, plastic is something fairly easy to get rid of. When in restaurants, let the staff know you don’t need a straw unless they offer an alternative. Consider purchasing a reusable bamboo straw from one of Kenya’s many green heroes. Andvironment offers customized kits that are both stylish and eco-friendly. STAY HYDRATED

Trying to drink more water each day? Make sure to follow this healthy ambition by always carrying a reusable water bottle with you to refill at the office. Trust me, your wallet will also thank you. GreenThing has colourful, insulated tumblers that will keep you cool in this summer heat. EAT ORGANIC, LOCAL & SEASONAL

We are lucky to have organic farmers markets are open all year-round where we can source ingredients that are both nutritious and free of toxic pesticides, all while supporting smallholder farmers. The Organic Farmers’ Market opens weekly in Karen and Thigiri, while the Naivasha Farmers’ Market is held bimonthly. No time for shopping? Mlango Farm delivers a weekly vegetable basket to your area. NO FOOD WASTE

Think of small actions to reduce food waste at home. Pack leftovers for lunch or make jams or smoothies using overripe fruit. You can also compost the rest of your kitchen waste in your own backyard to give back to the soil. Provisions Kenya offers a small compost kit complete with instructions to ensure success. CHOOSE UPCYCLED

Written And Photographed By Andrea Oyuela

Did you know that the fashion industry is one of the most polluting industries worldwide? This year go for local brands that upcycle materials. Shake the Tree offers timeless styles of casual and business-type clothing, while Simply SOSO Design has a range of trendy accessories, making you look both cool and professional while helping to save the planet.

to our gardens, or always have mature trees shedding their leaves every day, but we can add organic matter to our soils. Building your own ecological regenerative edible garden How to create the perfect soil for your garden

ere’s to beginning 2020 by setting the goal to grow some of your food at home whether it’s greens for your sandwich or herbs for your pasta. I’m going to show you how to create the perfect soil for your plants to thrive. Creating an ecological regenerative edible garden is one of the best things you can do for your health and environment. As a Permaculture Designer, I use permaculture

FA C T B O X Permaculture is a holistic way of landscaping using Mother Nature as inspiration for all of our work and designs. Soil is one of the most crucial assets we have, and conventional gardening and agriculture methods over the last few decades have completely exhausted our soils.

principles in all my edible landscaping designs. So how do we create the perfect soil for our gardens with Mother Nature’s help? Easy, look for how she has done it and repeat the same process. One of the best examples of this is Karura Forest (or any other Forest). There are no gardeners in the forest (not Human ones anyway) and there is no irrigation system yet everything is in balance and growing perfectly. The forest soil is dark, soft, moist, full of humus and millions of worms and insects that providing rich nutrients to the plants, who will die and fall to the ground to provide food for these critters. Above ground, it’s the same. To get our garden soils to function and behave the way the soil does in Karura Forest, simply replicate what happens there. Now, we can’t get as many wild animals

Bottom 2 inches – Broken sticks

and twigs

Next 3 inches – Dried organic matter (dried leaves, dried grass, cardboard, newspaper etc) Next 1 inch – Good quality garden compost Next 3 inches – Dried organic matter (dried leaves, dried grass, cardboard, newspaper etc) Top 3 inches – Original topsoil mixed with good quality compost

Then add 1 to 2 inches of dried leaves or grass as mulch, and give your newly made garden bed a thorough watering. The bed will be ready to plant after a week of curing. What we have done is create a regenerative garden bed. Over time, the organic matter will slowly decompose into compost and create a thriving environment for the underground economy to thrive. It will retain lots of water and nutrients for the plants it supports above ground. The sticks and twigs will also slowly decompose creating a home for the underground fungi which provides plants food in a mutual exchange of nutrients. The mulch you have added on top will need to be replaced every year as it will slowly decompose and provide compost for your plants from the top while aiding in retaining moisture underground. An ecological garden feels alive and well integrated, and this is the start. Look out for the next issue of Yummy, where we will be now explaining the basics of companion planting along with planting examples including how to create and complete your ecological garden once you have prepared the forest floor soil mentioned above. Beluga Vodka Created, Not Made Beluga Noble Russian Vodka skillfully combines classics and innovation, ages-old traditions and modern technology. Thanks to this combination of seemingly incompatible values, Beluga Noble Russian Vodka became a feasible manifestation of present-day nobility. It is a product of superior quality, created by the best professionals for the people who select only the best. The first batch of Beluga Noble Russian Vodka was produced in 2002. It was the first and the dearest to our hearts! This was the result of the meticulous hard work of the Mariinsk Distillery masters. The refined, rich taste of Beluga Noble Russian Vodka results from its unique composition, mainly due to the malt spirit and the purest water of the Siberian artesian wells. This helps to smoothen the taste of vodka. These carefully selected natural components pass through a triple filtering system. Afterwards, Beluga Noble is left to «rest» for thirty days. Such method helps to neutralize the harsh smell of the spirit and to enhance

the rich taste and soft flavor of Beluga Russian Noble Vodka, which made Beluga Noble Russian Vodka a global landmark. Beluga Noble Russian Vodka is exquisite in everything, down to every detail. The refined design with hand-made elements perfectly reflects the nobility of the product. Each bottle is adorned with an important feature – a small Beluga fish, traditionally fitted by hand. Beluga Noble Russian Vodka draws the consumer into a world of aristocratic luxury, which is felt emotionally, on just a visual contact with the Beluga products. Beluga Noble Russian Vodka is a unique product in the Russian spirits market, which has been leading the super-premium segment for a number of years. Any Time, Any Place No, it’s not what you think. We’re talking about aphrodisiac foods you can eat any time and any place as well as misconceptions and just how to eat these sex foods so that you can get well… sexy.

Chocolate is definitely sexy but the way it affects your body is in no way related to sex. Chocolate increases the level of serotonin in your body which makes you happy but doesn’t necessarily make you want to jump your partner’s bones. Maybe you can use it to set the mood but don’t expect it to help you seal the deal.

It truly does! This Peruvian product has been used for centuries and is gaining popularity. Of course, where wild claims are then there is a scientist out to prove its validity. Well science agrees with the Peruvians! This root works well for both men and women and has no side effects so drink and make merry, I guess.

This spice is so much more than a great addition to cakes and mashed potatoes. It enhances male performance so feel free to stock up on a bottle or two of this and add a generous handful to all your meals. This aphrodisiac is popular in Zanzibar and usually added to porridge. So maybe skip the wine and have nutmeg-filled porridge instead for date night.

Let’s just take a moment to be thankful that nuts exist. Almonds popped up in the 2010’s and they are showing no signs of going anywhere. Whether you like them toasted, flaked or blended into a smooth butter, adding it into your diet will fill you up with necessary nutrients such as zinc, selenium and vitamin E and sexual desire. Almonds and chill, anyone?

Who doesn’t love this pungent spice that adds a huge amount of flavour when added in even the tiniest amounts? Well, you’ll be happy to know that fenugreek works from the inside out by increasing production of sex hormones which in turn leads to an increase in sexual desire and more happy endings. Now you know how to spice up your sex life, literally.

YUMMY TIPS Try taking all these a couple of hours (or days) before you whip out the flowers and fancy dinners. Because these are natural products, they will take some time to kick in so don’t eat a packet of almonds and assume you’re suddenly going to turn into Don Juan. Find all these at Healthy U or Zucchini.

Guide to Self Love

If you love music: Go For Acoustic Wednesdays at Ankole GWWrill

Self-love doesn’t have to be boring. It may be easy to pour yourself a glass or two of wine and binge your favourite show but sometimes it’s great to try something new. Here are our ideas for great solo dates that will help you figure out what to do during your “me” time.

There’s nothing like live music and great food. Ankole has all these which makes it the perfect spot for your solo date night. You can make it a special night and show up in your Sunday best or keep it casual and show up in something comfortable just in case dancing in your chair isn’t enough. Either way between the spicy food, sultry music and soothing ambience, you’ll be guaranteed a something night out.

If you’re looking for a laugh: Attend A Heartstrings Entertainment Play You won’t have to worry about needing someone to talk to or wondering how many times you can fake laugh before your date realises they aren’t funny. The plays Heartstrings put on will not only leave you belly laughing but will help you discover a whole new way to spend an afternoon or evening enjoying your own company. Find out their 2020 schedule on their Facebook page @ Heartstrings.Enterainment.

If you want to learn a new skill: Attend the Beginner Knitting Class with Provisions Kenya Knitting isn’t something old people do. It’s a great skill that keeps your fingers busy and allows you to get creative. The best part is the class is small and you’re all beginners so you’ll be in great company. It’s an interesting way to spend 1.5 hours on a weekend and maybe you’ll finally learn how to make all those woven decor items you keep saving on Pinterest. Classes are Kshs. 2,500. Find the dates on @ provisionskenya.

If you want to stay in: Book A Staycation We’ve mentioned this before but that’s because it’s a great way to get away from everything. You can stay indoors and still manage to make a date out of it. It may be a bit hard to set up your place for a night in but it’s easier to throw rose petals everywhere, eat in bed and sleep in if you don’t have to worry about cleaning up. We recommend cosy Airbnbs in Champagne Ridge and Karen like The Container House.
