For our cover article, we feature DJ Jones, also known to many as Momma D. This ground pounding extraordinaire has ridden her motorcycle to all 50 states.....twice.

Dawn: To date I have crossed 43 state lines and plan to complete my lower 48 by the end of June this year. I rode cross country from Maryland to California with my husband in July of 2017 which included crossing 25 state lines in that trip and earning my Highway Smiley patch. I am the recipient of the 2018 Bessie Stringfield Ground Pounder of the Year award which I am truly honored and humbled to be receiving. I have received a couple other Ground Pounder awards within the past several years one of which was female furthest distance on 2’s.

Get Yonder: What’s the longest trip you’ve taken?

Dawn: The longest trip I have taken was my cross-country ride where we rode a total of 6,639 miles. We took 21 days total (6 days to ride to California, stayed in the Grand Canyon for 10 days than 5 days to ride back to Maryland). I thoroughly enjoyed every mile.

Get Yonder: Favorite place to ride………along the coast, back roads, mountains?

Dawn: Riding out west was some of my favorite places to ride. It allowed me the opportunity to see some beautiful sights which included mountains, windy back roads, rivers and lakes and fields of flowers all of which were simply amazing.

Get Yonder: What’s one tip you would give a new or beginning rider?

Dawn: My tips for a new rider would be to ride their ride and do whatever makes them feel comfortable. Never let anyone take you out of your comfort zone as that is an effortless way to get hurt.

When deciding which motorcycle to purchase, make sure you purchase one that is suitable to your skill level. Take a few out for a test ride before you make your final decision.

Get Yonder: What inspires you to continue to ride?

Dawn: Women like Bessie Stringfield (deceased) and Gloria Tramontin Struck (still riding and for 75 years) who paved the way for women like myself inspires me to continue to ride. These women began riding back when it was not popular for women to ride and faced many challenges, yet they pressed on for the love of the ride. For me, that is truly inspirational.

Get Yonder: What does being on the open road mean to you?

Dawn: Being on the open road is my therapy. It allows me time to think about life in general and to be thankful for my many blessings.

I love the wind in my face, my knees in the breeze and the ability to explore some of this beautiful country. It is a true sense of freedom and all about the journey and not necessarily the destination

Bun Burner 1500

I

n the second of our sixpart Iron Butt Association Ride series, we’ll discuss another popular IBA ride, The Bun Burner 1500. The BB1500 is marginally more difficult than the SS1000 discussed previously, and requires riding your motorcycle 1,500 miles in less than a 36 hour period.If you’re already familiar with the SS1000, then the pace of this ride is much the same. In fact, many riders knock out the first 1000 miles, catch a few hours of sleep, and go on to complete the full 1500.

certification. The same 5 steps are required whether you ride a SS1000 or a BB1500. Likewise, if a rider is successful in certifying their ride they receive an IBA BB1500 certificate, ride pin, and license plate backer.

As is standard with Iron Butt Associationrides, there are guidelines which must be followed to gain

So if you begin at 1am on July 1st, you have until 1pm July 2nd to complete the distance. Be prepared to stop and rest at some point along your ride, and budget time accordingly. Trying to push through drowsiness or exhaustion is dangerous!

Your ride needs to be documented from start to finish.

(This is the part most people screw up on).

Be sure to map your distance correctly. Many motorcycle odometers suffer minute inaccuracies that compound over time, meaning your odometer may read 1500 miles when you physically travelled only 1490.

The IBA suggests using Google Maps, Mapquest, or some form

of mapping alongside your motorcycle’s odometer.

2. Get a start witness. a.

The IBA requires that you get a physical eyewitness to verify the beginning of your ride.

b. This witness can be your friend, child, spouse, gas station attendant, fellow gas pumper, or basically anyone else who is not completing the ride with you. c.

The eyewitness must be willing to sign a witness document, and also be willing to respond if contacted via mail or phone by the IBA to confirm details.

3. Collect and track receipts. a.

Your ride BEGINS from the location and time of your first time stamped/dated computer generated receipt (usually a gas receipt). Handwritten receipts don’t count except under strange circumstances.

b. The computer generated receipt for your FINISH location and time should be the last receipt. Nobody needs to know what you bought for dinner when you stopped. c.

Pro Tip: it helps to record your mileage on each receipt. So,

each time you stop for gas, take a photo of your receipt next to your odometer, and write the mileage on the receipt somewhere as well. I often number the receipts in the order I received them as well, for easier documentation later. d. In some cases, the gas pump won’t print a date/time stamp or provide an address. In cases like this, an ATM receipt or even a snack receipt from inside the establishment often works. e.

f.

In the IBA paperwork, there is a mileage log. Be sure to make a note of any longer-than-average stops, like meal breaks or mechanical issues (for example, I once misjudged, ran out of gas in the middle of nowhere, and waited on AAA to bring gas for over an hour).

Make sure receipts include date, time, location, and odometer reading. If you travel into varying time zones on your trip, be sure to take note of that on the receipts.

g. As with most IBA rides, you are required to stop every 350 miles. So, if your gas tank is high capacity or modified in some way, take this into account.

Once you’ve got your final receipt, have at least one eyewitness sign a statement and note your end time. The IBA provides a form for this, with all needed information.

b. This witness can also be a friend, gas station attendant, random passerby, etc. The only real stipulation is that they cannot have completed the ride with you.

5. Prepare your documents. a.

Map out your trip using an old physical map you don’t mind sending in, photocopies of a map, or mapping software that can be printed (such as Mapquest/Google Maps).

b. Circle/dot/highlight cities or towns you made stops in, including your start and finish points. Most software will allow you to drop pins at each location to make mapping even easier! c.

You want this map to be as accurate as possible, so the person verifying your ride can track your route. If you make any weird loops or sidetrack in some

Submit your packet of documents, copied receipts, and applicable forms, along with whatever fees there are for the ride you wish to certify. Be sure to avoid stapling your packet together. Beyond that, be patient! Some months see more submissions than others, and verification can sometimes take up to several months.

This is, of course, a brief listing of the rules and guidelines. All forms needed to complete this ride certification, as well as many tips, frequently asked questions, and rules can be found on the Iron Butt Association website, www.ironbutt.com.

Damita “Momma D” Jones has been riding just shy of 20 years. This ground pounding extraordinaire, has logged nearly a half a million miles via two wheels. Her travels have taken her to all 50 states numerous times, as well as the Canadian provinces, Mexico, Spain, Brazil and Morocco. Currently, two of her motorcycles are featured in the National Motorcycle Museum in Iowa.

Momma D’s first motorcycle was a 1998 Kawasaki Vulcan 800, which she named Predator. She has since owned multiple motorcycles including her current bike, a 2016 Honda VF1200X by the name of Freedom. Momma D rides a whopping 25-30,000 miles a year.

Check out her two wheel journey over the past 19 years:

• From New Jersey to Key West, FL and back in 3 1/2 days • From New Jersey around the peninsula of Nova Scotia and back to Jersey in 3 1/2 days • 1999-2000: On her 1999 Honda Valkyrie Tourer named Big Bertha, she rode over 40,000 miles, through 41 states

and 3 Canadian Provinces from New Jersey, riding only 47 days over the course of the year, averaging 850 miles a day.

• 2000-2001: Still residing in New Jersey, Big Bertha and Momma D traveled over 25,000 miles, completing the remaining lower 48 and all the Canadian Provinces before moving to New Mexico in October 2001. Big Bertha and Momma D covered their miles in approximately 30 days, over the course of the year.

• After 3 1/2 years: now living in the Land of Enchantment, she reached100,000 miles and added Mexico to her list.

• August 2005: Big Bertha and Momma D traveled the Alaska Highway, from Albuquerque, NM to Fairbanks, Alaska and back.

• May 6, 2006: With175,000 miles on Big Bertha, they rode off into the sunset for a 50 state journey to raise money and awareness for heart disease and pediatric cancer.

• September 13, 2006: In Honolulu, Hawaii, Momma D made history by becoming the 1st person to ride the same motorcycle consecutive days, solo through all 50 United States.

• September 16, 2006: After 7 years, Big Bertha and Momma D rolled 200,000 miles in front of the Dole Plantation in Hawaii.

• Momma D and Big Bertha’s “50 State - Dream Power Ride” spanned 169 days and covered 25,000 miles.

• Longest Day in the Saddle - 20 hours of riding • 2001: Rode through Spain & Morocco • Rode in Brazil in 2003 on a BMW motorcycle.

• Rode to Fairbanks, Alaska 5 times & the Alaska Highway 10s - 2005, 2006 & 2009 on Big Bertha - 2014 on BLKIEC - 2017 on Freedom • Although not officially completing an Iron Butt Challenge, she's rode seven 1000 mile days, five of which was on Big Bertha with a best time of 15 hrs and 30 minutes., twice on BLKIEC with a best time of 14 hours.

• Big Bertha and BLKIEC - with all 50 states on both and a combined total of over 400,000 miles- are now displayed in the National Motorcycle Museum. along with all 50 state pictures from both 50 State Rides completed, two 50 State videos, and a wax figure. Her gear was sponsored by Helmet House. The display also includes: broken motorcycle parts, an x-ray of her broken collar bone which was broken 3000 miles into her 13,000 mile, 48 states ride in 2016 and she still completed it.

• December 2018: Momma D's historic book, 50 States of Consciousness: A True Story of D. Jones, a 130-pound, 6-foot-tall, post-menopausal African-American mom who rode her 800-pound motorcycle through all 50 states, surviving everything from tornadoes to grizzlies, will be published.

It will be sold on Amazon & in the Gift Shop of the National Motorcycle Museum in Anamosa, Iowa.

Momma D’s longest trip around the country was 25,000 miles. Though she enjoys cross-country riding, her most favorite place to ride is through the mountains. She says, “There’s nothing like riding through the mountains to me.” There’s no better feeling in the world than being in the saddle. Riding feeds my soul.”

Momma D offered some tips to new riders. She stated, “Be a defensive rider.

The 1st thing my Motorcycle Safety Class instructor told us was that we would become invisible. Another thing I believe, is that it's extremely important to practice in a parking lot. Work on your skills, your bike can go straight and fast by itself, but it needs your ability to go slow."

The Man On A M

There is a man on a mission in our country. His name is Kenneth Andrews and he's on a mission to complete as many Iron Butt Certifications as he can in a year. Ken logs an average of 50,000 miles a year and has already completed 70 Iron Butt Association Certifications. He keeps a log book of signatures of all the bikers he meets on his travels. GY sat down with him to gain some knowledge.

Get Yonder: Tell us a little about your riding experience. What did you start riding on, what do you currently ride, and how long have you been riding?

Ken: I started with a 5hp mini bike to a Honda 80…….to an Elsinore 175 and then big bikes (for back then). Around the age of 28 I decided it would be better (and safer) if I got off of them for a while. At the tender age of 50 I jumped back in the saddle. It took a long time to convince the wife (Eliza) that it was a good idea. I took her to the Harley Dealership and she really liked the Heritage Softail. She picked the color and I brought Sinesa home after her build a couple weeks later. She’s still in the barn, but she has the company of a Road Glide Special, Road Glide Ultra and an Sporty 883.

Get Yonder: If you were to estimate the miles you ride a year, what would it be?

Ken: The miles I’ve ridden has increased every year I’ve been back on 2’s and figure an average of 50K is about right after riding 88K last year. We just started March and the odometer says 18K.

Get Yonder: What are some of your riding accomplishments or major trips that you’d like to share.

Ken: Now there’s a tough one- as independent rider, I’ve logged almost 15 trips around the Earth within the confines of the lower 48 states…..visiting all of them at least 5 times. I’ve done multiple cross-country flower sniffers over 5K so don’t get me wrong here. I love those, especially with the wifey 2-up, but I’m competitive and like to participate in the different selfguided challenges such as the Tour of Honor. Last year I carried the #2 Flag and will be flying the #4 this year. I set a record for visiting 178 Statues of Liberty last year and 146 WW1 Doughboy Statues the year before. Last year I won America’s Ultimate Long Distance Riders and visited/logged almost 1,200 sites around the country for the second consecutive year.

I’ve done a few small rally’s and I’ve ridden the Hoka Hey and have been selected to ride it again this coming summer. Its 10,000 miles in 12 days with no gps, only point by point instructions and you must sleep next to your bike. Long distance riding such as certified Iron Butt Rides is a passion of mine. I’ve done the standard 1K in a day, 1,500/24, 2K in 36, the 100CCC- that’s Coast to Coast to Coast in 100 hours or less. I survived a wreck on that one and still completed it.

My personal favorite is the 48 States in 10 Days. During my attempt the weather was horrendous the whole trip. I was so tired after riding 11 states and 1,700 miles in 27 hours to finish with 30 minutes to spare that I didn’t realize one of my states were wrong. While doing the paperwork the error was found, I was literally crushed!! It said Flomaton, Alabama. I’d missed Florida by about 2 miles. I called my wife to tell her the bad news and she asked me what I was going to do? I said, “I’m packing my shit”. After a new shoe the next day I left and was successful the second time- It was a glorious ride!! Last year after completing the 100CCC to arrive at the IBA Jacksonville Pizza Party in March a rider told me about his 26 IBA rides the year before. I told this to my LD Bro Ken Cowart and said kind of tongue in cheek “I’m going to do 50”. He returned with “You can’t do 50”. I said, “You’re right- I’ll do 36”. On March 5th of this year I completed my 52nd Iron Butt Ride in less than a year’s time. I’ll hopefully be returning to Jacksonville for the party next week having finished the RAT (Ride Around Texas) and 4K in 4 Days. This should give me around 75 certified IBA Rides.

Get Yonder: With all the miles under your belt, what are some of your favorite places to ride?

Ken: Personally, I can’t be nailed down with the age-old adage of what’s your favorite part of the country, or time of year for that matter as I’m a yearround rider. There’s nothing like watching Spring rise through the country from mid-February down South to June in the northern climes. I do know my least favorite though, and even they have great appeal to me. Population Centers- You can’t get anywhere in them without it feeling like your feet

are stuck in the mud. Conversely, they have some of greatest architecture, artifacts and historical sites that drawn me to them like a firefly to the fire.

Get Yonder: Where do you get your riding inspiration?

Ken: Once I fell into the LD World a lot of things changed for me.

Not big ones mind you, just little ones. We’re not talking about the clothes that really do reflect the style of putt we ride.

I’m saying me-my inside has mellowed and it’s not just because of age. It’s the introspect from countless hours in the saddle- It’s the connection with Mother Earth as she heaves her elements while you’re hurtling down the asphalt seeking a cover that’s nowhere in sight. It’s the internal timer inside that tells me you’ve been gone long enough and need to turn home. It’s the longing for my family who keep me grounded and friends at home waiting to hear of an adventure they’ll never experience. It’s the visceral from all the input of incredible surroundings wherever you are at that point in time and space. It’s you and the road, and sometimes, that’s enough.

I’d like all of y’all who read this, especially the newer riders to understand something about this lifestyle we’ve chosen to become a part. It’s terribly dangerous. There are so many variables that are constantly changing around us, and we must be focused and aware of our surroundings at all times. We can’t determine when that animal is going to jump in front of you, or that kid is on their phone, or grandma didn’t take her pill and that drunk is coming at you head on.

Being aware will save your life and we’ll get to go home to our families. I’ll be looking for y’all out there. As we all declare-
