“Don’t conform to the crowd, always be yourself.” , This was one of the many golden nuggets of advice Zach Flagg, entrepreneur and coowner of Cornerstone Roofing and Restoration, would offer his younger self. According to Zach the younger version of himself is quite different from the man he is today. “ I was so quiet and unsure of myself”, Zach recalls as he reflects upon his upbringing in Eastman, Ga. Zach shares that he grew up in church, his dad a pastor and his mother a very loving, caring, supportive, and compassionate woman. In addition to being one heck of a cook, Zach shares a kid-like grin just thinking about his mom’s mac and cheese. Zach wholeheartedly believes it was these very humble yet foundational roots that have helped him along the way and to accomplish where he is today as well as his goals and aspirations for going forward into the future. Zach’s current highlights of life include hunting in Africa, snowboarding in Colorado, regular gym work outs with his close knit group of friends that also include some deep conversations about life, both where each other has been and where they are headed, along with sharing in prayers, bible studies and bib scriptures too. His life

today is very active, not only filled with work but many things of fun and recreation too, such as golf, disc golf, pickle ball and enjoying as much traveling and shared time with friends as possible. According to Zach that work and play balance is a very key component to being in business too because without it you get burnout. Zach shares that one of his daily life mantras he lives and works by is to “be where your feet are”, to stay fully present in the moment one is currently in, to not invest too much head space into what’s already occurred in the past or put too much anxiety or stress into things that haven’t come up yet. Zach believes in challenging oneself to get better every day, find the good in every situation, and that

opportunity favors the prepared, so come and be prepared. This intrinsic moral character likely comes from Zach’s military background as a young Cadet at Georgia Military College, in Milledgeville, GA. Zach shares that a few sentiments of advice he would offer other aspiring entrepreneurs would be to develop self discipline, learn to love the things that you need to do, stay the course, be willing to learn and take constructive criticism , surround yourself with like minded people who encourage you to step outside your comfort zone, challenge yourself, lift you up when you are down, and keep you grounded when times are good so you don’t get lost in the hype. He shares nothing in life is a mistake, it’s a lesson and living with that mindset has certainly enabled him to get where he is today as an owner and business partner with his good friend of many years Briley Wall.

Prior to being self employed Zach has held previous business positions such as being a debt collector and one of the youngest among a credit manager training program with a former employer, along with working in sales, all of these jobs and following his own advice and morals have led Zach to where he is today. This is where Zach’s next nuggets of golden wisdom come into play as he believes that opportunity favors the prepared, if you work hard and you are respectful to others, you can get anywhere you want to go. For Zach and his business partner Briley Wall this includes opening an office for their business in Perry, Ga last year, that’s 3 years after going into business with one another in 2021. Today these business partners and owners extend their services not only across counties in Georgia but across state lines into Colorado communities too. Their business flourishes because both put into practice the strong, foundational and Godly morals that they were raised under, which is why Zach shares that he never wants to get so successful or caught up in the monetary worth of it all that he forgets the humble yet sound roots he came from and why he hopes to be able to be a mentor to other young quiet, shy and unsure kids out there overtime, to help encourage and instill in them the ability to be willing to bet on themselves time and time again throughout life. As for future five year goals and aspirations of this thriving entrepreneur , Zach shares that business wise the plans are to go bigger into commercial and government restorations. Personally, Zach shares that he hopes to finding

that special someone who will join him on this journey of success and service unto others, for now Zach fully intends to stay where his feet are, and keeping this shared scripture in the forefront of his mind at all times, Matthew 6:34 “Don’t worry about tomorrow for tomorrow will worry about itself, each day has enough trouble of its own”, this helps Zach remain unafraid of failure because he wholeheartedly believes that more success is gained from trials than triumphs in life. There is no doubt that coming from humble beginnings, building strong and solid relationships with his family and friends , taking the most away from all work experience gained, has definitely allowed Zach to build himself a good life with God’s guidance and favor in the midst of it all from the foundation to the rooftop! SOARING TO NEW HEIGHTS Deep In the heart of Georgia,
you’ll find a place steeped in a strong sense of hospitality, comfort and welcome. You’ll also find the largest industrial complex in the state. By today’s history standards, Warner Robins is in its infancy, having only sprung to life in 1943. But by today’s industrial standards, the city is matured as home to some of the world’s most advanced aerospace engineering and avionics technologies. Because it was here the city was founded as home to Robins Air Force Base. And what the city may lack in years, it more than makes up for in pride of place, a strong sense of unity and patriotic spirit. Visiting the city for the first time, one may wonder at the F-15 Eagle mounted in take-off position in front of Warner Robins City Hall. It not only stands as a permanent reminder of American history and ingenuity, but of the plane’s status as a tactical fighter whose design and acceleration allow it to achieve air supremacy, triumphing over and outperforming any other aircraft. An inspiring symbol for a city in transition and on the rise, it also stands as a testament to the bond and camaraderie between Warner Robins and Robins Air Force Base. The military presence is seen throughout the town, evident in local restaurant names, car washes, water towers and murals, as well as the world-class Museum of Aviation. When they say, “Every Day in Middle Georgia Is Armed Forces Appreciation Day”, they truly embrace it with deep respect, reverence and affection. They honor veterans with big parades and ceremonies around Veterans Day and Memorial Day and salute the country, active service members and veterans with an unparalleled Independence Day Celebration. In fact, many veterans who were stationed at the base return to Warner Robins after retiring to settle in the area, continuing to contribute to the city’s rich traditions. Such as Friday nights in the fall at McConnell-Talbert Stadium where the city’s unwavering support and hometown pride for its high school football programs are on full display. Or in the summer when the city hosts the Little League Southeast Regional Tournament. With exceptional youth sports, a world-class recreation center, multiple parks, lakes and trails, along with highly ranked schools, this is a family-friendly city that embraces sports and education like few others. Also known as the International City, a rich tapestry of cultures makes up the Warner Robins community. From Mexican, Greek and Indian to Korean, Thai and Japanese on any given day, residents and visitors can sample the world. A variety of festivals, events and farmers markets throughout the year celebrate this multi-cultural heritage, local arts, music and holiday traditions. Beyond the base with its 24,000+ employees, job opportunities in manufacturing, retail and technology add to a diverse and growing economic base. From aerospace to agribusiness, advanced manufacturing to food processing, logistics and high tech, Warner Robins supports innovative businesses and boasts a tech skilled workforce, providing many reasons to invest in the community. And Fortune 500 companies have taken notice with investments in initiatives, such as the Community Innovation Lab. This is a city putting innovation in action and being recognized for it, with accolades like the International Smart City Award. Of course, being centrally located off I-75 within easy proximity to Atlanta, the mountains and the coast only strengthens its draw. Certainly, in recent years a new attitude in Warner Robins has taken flight. Along with revitalizing the city’s downtown core, bold new initiatives, including the development of workforce housing are on the table. A closeknit city that blends history and tradition with forward-thinking ideas and new growth is a city with vision, tenacity and faith for the future. The Air Force saying, “Aim High” is a call to action. One that’s more than fitting for Warner Robins, a city that’s ascending

Jill approaches both quilting and life with that same confidence: that no piece is wasted, and that a steady hand can bring beauty out of what once felt scattered.
O
On most days, the best ideas don’t announce themselves. They show up quietly—half-formed and almost accidental—while someone is sorting through what to keep and what to let go, or holding a memory without fully realizing its worth. For Jill Davison, those moments often come wrapped in fabric. Pieces already stitched. Materials softened by time. Items that have lived another life before finding their way to her hands. Where others might see something worn or unfinished, Jill sees possibility—a future purpose waiting to be shaped. In a room she has made her own, Jill is often found repurposing, reimagining, and rebuilding. Fabric becomes form. Pieces take on new purpose. Whether it’s a quilt or something meant to be worn or carried, the heart of the work remains the same: careful hands, thoughtful choices, and the fulfillment that comes from creating something meant to last. Quilting, for Jill, isn’t just a craft. It has become a rhythm—one that anchors her,
In Houston County, where community still values tradition, craftsmanship, and connection, Jill Davison’s art of quilting offers something profoundly meaningful—a reminder that the best things are often made slowly, and that lasting beauty is built by hands willing to do the work.

gently brings people together through shared work and presence, and offers a steady counterpoint to the pace of everyday life.
An Unexpected Beginning Quilting entered Jill Davison’s life later than most people expect a new passion to arrive. It wasn’t something she grew up doing, nor something she had long planned to pursue. It was simply something she decided to try. That decision led Jill to attend a quilting class alongside her mother, meeting once a week for seven weeks in Douglas, Georgia—just a short distance from her hometown of Hazlehurst. Together, they learned the fundamentals: how to stitch, how fabric pieces come together, and what was needed simply to get started. Those early weeks weren’t about mastery. They were about understanding the process and becoming familiar with something entirely new. That foundation mattered. Later, Jill took another course closer to home, building on what she had already learned. With the basics in place, patterns began to make sense. Structure became visible. What once felt unfamiliar slowly became approachable. What drew Jill in wasn’t speed, but process. Quilting invited patience. It asked her to trust each step and appreciate progress as it unfolded. Starting later in life didn’t feel like
It is fitting that this belief belongs to a quilter— someone who trusts that scattered pieces can come together into something meaningful. Jill approaches both quilting and life with that same confidence: that no piece is wasted, and that a steady hand can bring beauty out of what once felt scattered.

a limitation—it allowed her to approach the craft with intention and curiosity, discovering what quilting could become in her own hands. Those first stitches became the starting point for everything that followed. Quilting moved from something Jill was learning to something she loved, proving it is never too late to begin something new and allow it to grow into something meaningful.
The Meaning in the Making At its simplest, quilting is the act of taking fabric apart and putting it back together again. Pieces are cut, rearranged, and stitched into something new— something meant to last. It is a process built on intention, patience, and trust in how individual parts will eventually form a whole. For Jill, the work is not rushed or accidental. Each piece has a place, even if it isn’t obvious at first.
30 houston county living
What begins as separate sections—unfinished and unconnected—gradually becomes something purposeful through steady hands and careful attention. True quilting happens when all the layers—the front, the back, and the middle—are brought together into one finished piece. That final step transforms effort into completion. This attention to finishing is part of what Jill finds meaningful. Quilting rewards patience and followthrough. It teaches that beauty isn’t only found in beginning, but in staying with a process long enough to finish. Progress, she’s learned, is made one step at a time—and completion is worth the wait.
Finding Rhythm in the Work For Jill Davison, quilting has become a steady presence—something she returns to again and again. It brings focus and intention into her days, offering a
rhythm that remains constant through changing seasons. Quilting moves at its own pace. It cannot be hurried or multitasked. Each step requires attention and care. In a world filled with constant noise and competing demands, quilting asks the hands and mind to work together, fully present. Jill values the experience of creating something from start to finish. Quilting offers visible progress and a clear sense of completion, allowing effort to build gradually until something whole takes shape. It also reshapes how Jill experiences time. Moments that might otherwise pass unnoticed— long drives, flights, or quiet evenings—become opportunities to work steadily toward something meaningful. Often, she quilts with sermons or worship music playing softly in the background. Faith isn’t the focus of the work, but it colors the atmosphere—present in the rhythm without being forced. Over time, quilting has become more than a creative outlet. It has become a rhythm Jill relies on, shaping how she approaches focus, patience, and the satisfaction of seeing something through.
Where Quilting Meets Community Much of Jill Davison’s quilting is shaped with someone else in mind. Some pieces are made for family. Others for friends walking through difficult seasons. Over time, quilting has become one of the ways Jill shows care—through work that is thoughtful, personal, and given freely. That same spirit extends through her involvement with a quilting guild in Perry. Together, the group creates handmade projects that reflect quilting’s long tradition of service, including quilts for veterans through the Quilts of Valor program and handcrafted pieces for the NICU, offering comfort during some of life’s most tender moments. The work itself is simple. The meaning behind it is not. Quilts created this way carry more than warmth. They represent time, attention, and care—stitched patiently and offered to someone else as an expression of gratitude or support. That sense of shared work has also led Jill to something she never initially set out to do: hosting quilting retreats. What began as a simple idea—opening her space to gather and create—has grown into an opportunity to share quilting with others. These retreats are held in Milledgeville at the Davisons’ lake home on Lake Sinclair, where participants gather not for perfection, but for learning, connection, and unhurried creativity.
That gathering has grown quickly into a newly created business called Lakeside Stitching—a blessing Jill speaks about with gratitude, both for how quickly it has expanded and for what it has revealed. The growth has been tremendous, and to Jill, it reflects a growing desire among people to slow down, learn something new, and rediscover the quiet value of traditional work. For Jill, the retreats are another extension of what quilting has given her: connection, purpose, and confidence built alongside others.
The Traveling Quilt Some of Jill’s quilting happens in the thoughtfully arranged space she has created at home—where projects are laid out, patterns are considered, and time is measured in quiet progress. But not all of it stays there. Some of it travels. Jill has taken up hand piecing, a traditional method of stitching fabric together by hand. It is slower by design, but portable—allowing her to quilt wherever she goes. One hand-pieced quilt has followed her across the map. Over about eighteen months, Jill worked on it in cities and states, on flights and in waiting rooms, stitching during quiet moments between destinations. Each section carries the memory of where it was made. When finished, the quilt will be labeled with the places it traveled—a stitched record of miles covered and moments held. In a world that often values
Hometown Living At Its Best
31
speed, Jill has chosen a process that values attention and presence. Stitch by stitch, mile by mile, the quilt grows.
Timeless Threads Jill Davison believes quilting is finding its way back into the culture. She sees it in the growing online quilting world, where makers share patterns, techniques, and stories across screens. What was once considered old-fashioned has found a new audience, reaching people who may never have encountered it otherwise. But quilting’s return isn’t about trends. It reflects something deeper—a longing for work that is tangible, meaningful, and shared. In a digital world, quilting offers something physical. In a fast-moving culture, it invites patience. That is part of why Jill is intentional about passing quilting on. She talks about teaching her grandchildren—not just how to sew, but how to make something with care and work through a process with purpose. Quilting also brings people together. In a world that often feels divided, it offers common ground. Jill has seen how quilting strengthens relationships within her own family, creating shared time and space where conversations unfold naturally and understanding grows. In that sense, quilting becomes more than fabric and thread. It becomes a way people gather, create, and connect again.
A Stitch of Wisdom When Jill talks with someone curious about quilting, she keeps her advice simple. Begin simply. Don’t become overwhelmed. Believe you can do it. She often returns to a familiar phrase in the quilting world: it’s better to have a finished product than a perfect one. 32

For Jill, that idea removes the pressure to get everything right. Quilting becomes less about precision and more about progress—about allowing something to be completed, even with imperfections. It’s advice that reflects a way of approaching life with patience, grace, and the courage to begin—trusting that what is made with care does not have to be perfect to be meaningful.
A Piece of the Pattern Jill and Steve Davison are intentional about the life they are building together. It shows in their home, the time they spend with family, and the care given to how memories are made. Their life, much like a quilt, has been carefully shaped over time, with attention to how each piece fits into the pattern. That perspective is rooted in a belief Jill quietly but confidently holds, reflected in Jeremiah 29:11—a reminder that there is a greater design at work. Paths shift. Stories blend. What once felt fractured can, with time and care, become something strong and cohesive. It is fitting that this belief belongs to a quilter—someone who trusts that scattered pieces can come together into something meaningful. Jill approaches both quilting and life with that same confidence: that no piece is wasted, and that a steady hand can bring beauty out of what once felt scattered. In Houston County, where community still values tradition, craftsmanship, and connection, Jill Davison’s art of quilting offers something profoundly meaningful—a reminder that the best things are often made slowly, and that lasting beauty is built by hands willing to do the work. HCL
What drew Jill in wasn’t speed, but process. Quilting invited patience. It asked her to trust each step and appreciate progress as it unfolded. Starting later in life didn’t feel like a limitation—it allowed her to approach the craft with intention and curiosity, discovering what quilting could become in her own hands.

There’s an old adage that says, “If you’re going to do a job, then do it right.” In other words, take some pride in your work. This means holding yourself to a certain standard, one that you must prove over and over again to both your customers as well as yourself. It also means that you have to continue to strive for quality, even when no one else is looking. Take the folks at Creative Coatingz, for example. Since 1996, their staff has always tried to maintain the highest standard in automotive care. As Macon’s top provider of truck accessories and window tinting services, they have

focused on building strong customer relationships while also providing the highest quality of workmanship on every vehicle that enters their shop. Along with fellow co-owner Jason Moore, James Denney says he feels a sense of pride and accomplishment every day that he comes into his shop. “It’s very satisfying when I see our customers happy with work that we do. A lot of people take great pride in their cars, so when they’re excited to see the work we’ve done on their vehicle, that’s part of the reason why I think we’ve been successful all these years. Nearly 30 years
ago, our business started with just spraying bed liners, and then the company grew from there.” Creative Coatingz now performs repairs on everything from brakes and exhaust systems to electrical and suspension systems. Other services include diesel engine system repairs, lube and oil changes and other preventive maintenance. “We offer pretty much everything automotive, from major repairs and accessories to interiors and bed liners,” explains James. “Basically, we are a ‘one stop shop’ for automotive needs. In fact, we’re really not limited to what we can do, and that’s the reason that we’re pretty unique in this area.” Creative Coatingz also specializes in truck caps and lids, spray-on bed liners, suspension lift kits, and window tints, offering custom colors and unlimited options on products for residential, commercial, or industrial uses. They specialize in spray-on bed liners that are chip and scratch resistant and backed with a lifetime warranty. The shop also offers competitive prices on tire brands like Mastercraft, Nitto, and Toyo, and regularly performs tire rotations, computer spin balancing, and flat tire repairs. “From the first phone call with James until the work was done, my husband and I were treated with respect and the work done is great! We are very happy with bed liner, hardtop, and running boards’” says satisfied customer Leigh Cochran. “Besides their quality work, James Denney says that there’s something else that’s unique to his shop. “Many other places only offer a few services or products; however, we can do it all, even restorations. We’re the only full service automotive shop in Middle Georgia. Along with our longevity, that’s what truly sets us apart.” Out of the thousands of clients that Creative Coatingz has served for nearly three decades, the consensus can best be summed up by customer Brian Hinkle. “I wouldn’t trust anyone else with my truck.”

In 1985 Jim Nadeau worked in the co-op program at Robins AFB as an electronics technician in training. In search of something to do in his free time from his co-op work, he began installing flooring with a friend who had already been an installer for several years. After working 6 years at RAFB in tandem with installation, he decided it was time to start his own business. Determined to make it work, Jim created “Nadeau Flooring Installation” with multiple crews. In the mid 90’s after much hard work, Jim expanded to 5 crews, installing for several flooring companies and renamed his business “Flooring Installation Management Inc.”

Jim says he enjoys the process, and we do our best to go the extra mile. We are very customer service oriented and try to make anyone that walks through the front doors’ day a little brighter if possible.
As a life-long health enthusiast, it only makes sense that Jim has opened “Jim’s Gym” next door to The Floor Store. He enjoys working out and it has always been a dream to open his own gym. Jim’s Gym has limited membership to 100 members to eliminate overcrowding and is open 24 hours a day to its members.

After 27 years of running flooring installation crews and building homes, Jim began looking into opening a brick-and-mortar retail flooring business. Over the years, he worked for and with a lot of different flooring businesses and learned a lot from each of them, which gave him the fortitude and confidence to make a go of it. After a lot of research and plenty of sleepless nights, in 2012 Jim officially opened The Floor Store on Watson Boulevard in an existing shopping center (Galleria Square). After leasing space for nearly 10 years, he and his family came to the realization they wanted to build their own facility, which is how the new location on Russell Parkway came about. In the fall of 2024, they decided to open a second location in Perry, Jim’s hometown. He feels very blessed for the support he has received from his customers and the community since the beginning. Originally, The Floor Store offered all types of flooring as well as tile for showers and backsplashes. With his background in contracting, though, Jim wanted to offer more. They now offer design assistance with flooring, tile, cabinets and the ability to create new spaces as well as remodeling old spaces. This makes the store more of a one-stop-shop for home design. Being a family-run business, Jim and his family take pride in helping families in their community and the staff they employ. Jim is very proud and thankful for the great staff he has working. including the design and sales team, the office administration and purchasing, on site job supervisors, the warehouse manager, and the in-

house installers. “It truly takes a village”, said Jim. Jim’s wife, Sheree, to whom he has been married to for 33 years, runs the oversight of the business as the operations manager. Their daughters, Logan and Sheridan work in front of the house. Logan runs the front end of the business as the Sales Manager and lead designer. Sheridan runs the CAD design and drawings to help bring customers’ visions to life, whether it’s a new building or renovation. There are multiple families that work at The Floor Store beyond Nadeau’s. Gene Misiak, the installation manager, has worked for and with Jim since he was 17 years old. His wife of twenty years, Jennifer, is the installation scheduler and has been with TFS since 2021. Terry Clem has been with the

store since 2012 as the Office Manager, keeping the books on track and geared for growth. Her youngest son, Dustin, is our Warehouse Manager and has been with TFS for over five years. Whether blood related or not, we are all a family at TFS. Another important staff member is Ruby Salas is one of our sales & design associates and has been with us for more than 4 years. Deb Matthews is our cabinet designer she has been with us for 3+ years and has been in the industry for over 30 years. Dane Woodard works part time in sales and has been with us for over 3 years. The sales & design team at the Perry location is headed up by Taylor Thompson and Leslie Sinyard. Taylor started off as the in-store’s warehouse back
in 2012 and now helps run and operate the Perry location. Leslie has been in the flooring business since 1984 and has been with us since the Perry opening and has been a great asset to the team. Last but not least, is Tyler Sailors, our job-site manager. Tyler checks in on jobs to make sure they are running smoothly and does final walkthroughs to be sure our customers are thoroughly satisfied. He is very personable and works great with our customers. Both Tyler and Gene work closely with our fantastic installation teams as well. The team at TFS specialize in both new and remodeled bathrooms and kitchen as well as commercial jobs. It is always exciting to take a job from scratch to a finished product.

There is immediate gratification seeing the transformation as a project progresses. From the beginning of a project to the end, every staff member contributes to the successful outcome. There have been many changes in trends over the years, but they always tend to circle back in one form or another. From the late earth tones of the 80’s that are starting to resurface, then jewel tones to the white and greys that are still trending today to the soft and muted tones you see today. Every trend has a place here, except maybe shag carpet. Jim says he enjoys the process, and we do our best to go the extra mile. We are very customer service oriented and try to make anyone that walks through the front doors’ day a little brighter if possible. We want our customers and staff to feel like it is home. In The Floor Store, we take pride in putting our “all” into any job, big or small; from full home and business renovations to one room jobs. We just want to make sure everyone is taken care

of and know that their time spent here is valuable. I asked Jim, how does working with the most important ladies in your life affect you daily? “Clearly, I have been outnumbered all my life. At the Floor Store this is the only time I get to be the boss!” As a life-long health enthusiast, it only makes sense that Jim has opened “Jim’s Gym” next door to The Floor Store. Blessed to do what we enjoy, making people happy. Blessed to be a part of this community. HCL

LONGTIME PERRY CRACKER BARREL HOSTESS MAKES CUSTOMERS FEEL RIGHT AT HOME.
M
Millions of people have stopped at the Cracker Barrel in Perry since it first opened its doors more than 30 years ago. Even if they haven’t been to this particular location, they’ve likely been to other Cracker Barrels and know they’ll find good food and a warm and inviting atmosphere evoking memories of home and a bygone era in the restaurant and gift shop. Welcoming many of these visitors is a woman who is as much a part of the Perry Cracker Barrel as the fireplace, rocking chairs on the porch and peg games on the tables. When it comes to making the all important first impression, Betty Williams, with her friendly and caring manner and big smile, is at the top of the menu. Williams is a hostess at Cracker Barrel. She’s held that position since January 2011. For the past year, Williams has worked two days a week in a concession
to being in her early 70s. “That’s enough for me,” Williams said. “There’s a lot of walking back and forth.” There’s also a lot of talking back and forth. Williams said she enjoys conversing and meeting people, a number of whom are regular customers. “I know quite a few by name,” she said. “I’m a people person.” Among her regular customers are Victor and Janie Garcia, who have known Williams for 20 years and have gone to Cracker Barrel about as long as the latter has served as hostess. “Ms. Betty has a sweet disposition you can’t help but to befriend her,” Janie said. “Like the old adage says, ‘She’s the hostess with the mostest.’” Lewis Kiger has served as pastor at Memorial Heights Baptist Church for a dozen years. He said he and his predecessor, who was developing Alzheimer’s, would go to Cracker Barrel several times a week and play checkers in front of the fireplace. Kiger said it was a good way to monitor the retired minister’s health and spend time with him. He recalls how Williams always made them feel welcome. “Ms. Betty always took good care of us as we sat and played,” Kiger said. “She would bring us

coffee and always asked how the ‘preachers’ were doing. She was more than just an employee, she was a real friend to us.” Although his checkers partner has passed on, Kiger and his family still go to Cracker Barrel and enjoy seeing Williams at the hostess stand. “She has provided a very warm welcome every time we walked in the door,” Kiger said. “It is always a joy to walk in the door and see Ms. Betty’s smiling face. She is a valuable asset not just to Cracker Barrel but to this community. We thank the Lord for her and ask for God’s richest blessings over her life and family.” While the Perry Cracker Barrel offers good food at reasonable prices in warm and cozy surroundings, there are plenty of other options in the area. What most of them probably lack is a hostess featuring a package of longevity, friendliness and care that is hard to beat and brings back customers such as Sharon Stokes. “I have been going to Cracker Barrel every Tuesday morning at 9 a.m., with the women from Andrew Church for almost two years now,” Stokes said. “Miss Betty has always greeted us with the sweetest smile and a big hello. She is definitely a true Southern lady. The other ladies in our group, anywhere from two to all 10, and I look forward to our visit every week. Miss Betty is always smiling and taking care of seating us.” Shirley is succinct when describing Williams’ positive qualities. “Betty’s accountable, dependable, reliable and has a strong work ethic,” said the Houston County resident. Williams said the restaurant stays busy being located next to the interstate, and there will be plenty of holiday visitors around Thanksgiving and Christmas. That suits her just fine. “I like staying busy,” Williams said. “When I’m home I’m doing

something - work in the yard, cooking…” Ryan Jacobs has served as general manager at the Perry Cracker Barrel for three years. He said Williams takes special pride in cleaning the tables and will shoo him away if he infringes on her task. “Ms. Betty goes behind the servers and makes sure the tables are clean,” Jacobs said. “She works hard and is always willing to help out and will come in on an off day if we need her. There’s never anything we’ve asked her she doesn’t do.” It’s with guest interaction where William truly excels. “She puts hospitality first,” Jacobs said. “The guests love her and will come in to see her. Ms. Betty’s one of the friendliest and sweetest women I’ve worked with and known. She reminds me of my own mother. We have her training the new employees. She’s a model of hospitality.” Tom Smith and Doris Wade met Williams five years ago after their office relocated to Perry. Wade said Williams is her favorite hostess out of all the Cracker Barrels she’s visited. “We frequently have lunch at Cracker Barrel and are always super delighted when our Ms. Betty is on duty doing what she does best - charm and accommodate,” Wade said. “We luv our Ms. Betty.”
74

Smith said a magazine article on Williams is a fine way to recognize and pay tribute to such a lovely lady who hosts and greets her guests with a big smile and a gracious greeting. “The Perry, Ga., Cracker Barrel is very fortunate to have Ms. Betty as an employee for her work ethic and genuine pleasing persona,” Smith said. “She offers a definite soothing antidote to a stressful morning.” Williams has been involved with and around cooking much of her life. A Perry native, she followed her mother into the food industry and got her first job at 16, clearing tables at the New Perry Hotel. Williams stayed there for six years before going to McDonald’s as a cook and moving up to manager over a 10-year period. With her mother battling diabetes, Williams took a job at Hardee’s so she wouldn’t have to work as many hours as she did as manager at McDonald’s and could help care for her mother. Starting as a cook, Williams, as she had done at McDonald’s, worked her way up to manager. Katherene Washington grew up with Williams and worked with her at Hardee’s. She said if she

had to live with someone, it would be Williams. “She’s fun to be around,” Washington said. “I’ve never seen her get mad. She loves people and connects with people. That’s how she was brought up. She does her job. We were like family growing up. I enjoy seeing her. We’ve never had a falling out.” After 11 years at Hardee’s, Williams was ready for a new challenge and slower pace and came to Cracker Barrel. “I was getting older,” she said. “I wanted something easier and different.” Different is not always better. In 2025, Cracker Barrel announced it would change its traditional homey interior for a more modern one. Following a public backlash, the company put that plan on hold. According to Williams, management announced it would be another 10 years before any changes are made. In the meantime, Williams and her guests will continue to enjoy an atmosphere that reminds them of home.

We’re friendlier than other places where you eat. They’re not as friendly and don’t smile as much.” There’ve been times in her life when Williams had to smile through the tears. She’s watched her four sisters pass away in the past 10 years. “I miss them so much,” Williams said. “I was really close with two of them.” Helping her through this difficult time is a strong faith in God. She’s attended Greater Union Baptist Church her entire life and reads the Bible. “The Lord puts me where I am for a reason,” Williams said. That applies to home as well as the workplace. Williams said she’s not planning on going anywhere until the good Lord calls her. Remarking she’s always been into food, Williams said she loves her job. That’s evident when she greets her guests. “I smile and compliment them on their clothes,” Williams said. “I welcome them in and tell them to enjoy it and whatever you get is good.” That applies to the menu as well as the service they get when they walk to the hostess stand and meet Betty Williams, who will lead them to their table and later clean it. She’ll flash a great smile that is contagious and will have her guests following suit. HCL

From attending this beekeeping course Anita began her own educational journey of learning multiple facts about bees from the various types of bees there are to the many things about honey bees such as the differences between a hive of bees and a colony of bees, the life span of queen bees, the quantity and duties of the worker bees, the process of how honey comes to be and most importantly the cultural need of bees for survival. Springtime, April 24th, 2023 is when Golden Bee Honey Market began from very humble beginnings. Anita initially started attending farmers markets with a tent and table full of products and by-products from various types of honey, honeycomb, propolis, beeswax, honey based natural health and hygiene products. From the farmers markets, a customer clientele was built and the requests for the ability to buy more often came up. Anita then decided to build a roadside stand at the end of her driveway and to her surprise she could not keep it full of products fast enough. Rain or shine customers would come by to purchase products and often engage in Today Golden Bee Honey Market holds regular

Premier South Electrical offers superior service to propel your home or commercial space into the optimal expanse it was created to be. Owners Matthew Guillory and Justin Peacock started Premier South Electrical in 2022 with great aspirations for the impact their work could have on the community. The pair met working alongside one another in 2014 at a company where they spent five years building a foundation of what would later become their own great business partnership. Over time, Matthew and Justin sharpened their craft and pursued other electrical opportunities before teaming up to go into business. “We wanted a company where we would treat our employees in the field the way we always wish we had been treated,” Matthew says. “In committing to this, we provide our employees with insurance, pensions, and above-average wages.” For our customers, we work tirelessly to provide a seamless experience that far surpasses their expectations. We pride ourselves on speedy response times and efficient work, all conducted in a timely manner. We offer electrical service work, home additions, new construction, remodeling, and repair. We run a team with four additional electricians who are highly trained and skilled in the field. “Whether it be a home, commercial building, or industrial, there’s really nothing out there that we can’t do between the two of us,” Justin says. “If it has a wire going to it, we can do it.” We hold ourselves to a higher standard than other companies to ensure our customers’ satisfaction. “You’re going to get quality work,” Matthew says. “And if there’s an issue with it or something went wrong, we’re back to fix it without charge. If it was on us, we’ll always make it right.” We offer the community honest service, reliability, and outstanding professionalism they can count on.

BUILT to Last : The Quiet Resilience of Steve Davison

It’s a familiarity shaped by long hours riding the railways years ago — watching the horizon unfold while thinking quietly about the future.

You can tell a lot about a place by the way it holds its purpose — by how it welcomes you in without needing to explain itself. Clean Control Corporation in Warner Robins is that kind of place. The work is purposeful, the pace steady, and the atmosphere shaped by years of effort, responsibility, and resolve. You sense it in the way people move through the building, in the familiarity of the space, and in the quiet understanding that what happens here matters beyond these walls. It feels less like a company driven by urgency and more like one guided by intention — a place where people know both what they are building and why it matters. That culture reflects the life and leadership of Steve Davison — a man who has built a company whose products now reach far beyond Middle Georgia, while his presence remains deeply rooted in the community that shaped him. Clean Control Corporation’s growth tells one story; Steve’s steadiness tells another. Together, they reflect a life marked by persistence, responsibility, and a commitment to remain faithful to the work at hand, even when the path forward required patience rather than speed. Resilience became a practiced discipline rather than a passing response. Over time, it was strengthened through adversity and sustained by a faith that continues to guide him forward.
Learning the Rhythm of the Work
Long before leadership or titles entered the picture, Steve Davison learned what it meant to carry responsibility. As a teenager living overseas, he took on his first jobs in roles that asked for dependability long before recognition ever came into play. Bagging groceries on a military base and working long Hometown Living At Its Best

shifts in a kitchen introduced him to a simple truth: responsibility doesn’t wait for perfect timing. You meet it where you are, and you learn by doing. Those early experiences may have seemed ordinary at the time, but they formed habits that would follow him — showing up, paying attention, and taking ownership of what was in front of him. By the time his family settled in Warner Robins, that lesson had already taken root. After graduating from Northside High School, Steve stepped directly into the workforce, often balancing overlapping jobs. He spent time in wholesale operations, worked in print production where attention and follow-through mattered, and eventually found his way to the Central of Georgia railroad. At just nineteen, he became one of the youngest conductors on the line — a role that placed him in constant motion, carrying both responsibility and opportunity along the rails. Days on the train moved with a steady rhythm. Mile after mile, the work required focus, attentiveness, and a willingness to stay engaged as the landscape unfolded ahead. There was little room for distraction, but plenty of space for thought. Over time, that experience shaped how Steve understood responsibility — not as something dramatic or hurried, but as a commitment to remain present, to do the work in front of him, and to keep moving forward with purpose. Even years later, it returns in a recurring dream. In it, Steve finds himself riding the train again, moving steadily along the tracks as the horizon stretches ahead. The motion feels familiar, grounded, and purposeful — not hurried, not uncertain. It reflects a way of living built on persistence rather than perfection. That image has come to echo the way Steve approaches life and leadership. Progress, he learned early on, doesn’t require having everything figured out. It asks for presence, perseverance, and the faith to keep moving — mile after mile — trusting that steady effort carries its own meaning.
Recognizing Opportunity
As those early lessons settled in, Steve Davison began to recognize that he wasn’t just learning how to work — he was learning how to build. The responsibility he had carried in earlier years started to express itself in practical ways. Steve paid attention to how businesses operated, where systems strained, and how effort translated into outcome. His early ventures were not departures from one idea to the next, but extensions of the same impulse: to take what he understood and apply it in a way that made sense. One after another he opened many businesses’; the first automotive detailing shop in Warner Robins, Southern Wholesale for automobiles, Atlantic Leasing and learned the mechanics of leasing, invested in a cabinet shop; but none of these endeavors were successful — each experience adding clarity rather than distraction. With every step, his understanding
102 houston county living
of margins, logistics, and people grew sharper. Business, for Steve, was never about chasing opportunity; it was about recognizing it — and knowing when to move forward thoughtfully rather than impulsively. That instinct found fuller expression in his mid-twenties, when he founded Mobile Wash of America — the first pressure-washing operation in Middle Georgia. The work was demanding and hands-on, expanding into duct and hood vent cleaning, chimney services, and janitorial care. Nursing homes became a significant part of the operation, relying on Steve and his crews for work that required consistency, trust, and attention to detail. As if blinded by a distraction bug, he partnered in a Macon restaurant called Danny’s at the same time he founded Mobile Wash of America (MWA). Time has a way of looking back at the stupidity of that decision, but at the time it looked like a great idea. It lasted a year. From the outside however MWA appeared to be gaining traction. Crews stayed busy. Demand was steady. On paper, things were moving forward. In the day-to-day reality, however, the work carried weight that few people saw. The cleaning Hometown Living At Its Best

Several years ago, Steve was approached about a 22-year-old company called No Natz. Its beginnings echoed his own—started in a garage rather than a bathtub—but shaped by the same perseverance and care. The founder hoped to preserve his legacy and had heard Steve’s story. A conversation began, trust followed, and today No Natz is part of the family and a nationally recognized brand.
chemicals required to do the job were heavy and difficult to manage. Without the equipment larger operations relied on, Steve leaned on ingenuity and persistence. Using a carefully placed tire, he eased massive drums off delivery trucks, letting timing and balance do the work he couldn’t yet afford machinery to do. Until one day, the balance failed. As a drum came down, the pressure gave way and the seam split open, spilling its contents and soaking him completely. It wasn’t a dramatic moment — just a frustrating one — but it stayed with him. Not because of the mess, but because of the question it raised. Why did something so essential require so much weight, strain, and inefficiency? Steve didn’t frame it as an invention or innovation. He framed it as a business problem. There had to be a better way to deliver the same effectiveness without the burden that came with it.
104 houston county living
At the time, he couldn’t have known where that question would lead. What he did know was that the business, though active and growing, was becoming heavier to carry. Costs increased. Pressure mounted. The space between effort and return narrowed. Before the answer took shape, Steve would face a season that tested everything he had built — quietly preparing the ground for what was still to come.
Building Something Better
The question Steve couldn’t shake stayed simple. If the work depended on cleaning power, why did delivering that power have to be so cumbersome? Why did effectiveness come with so much weight, risk, and inefficiency? The problem lingered long after the day’s work ended, not as an idea for a product, but as an unresolved tension in the work itself. Eventually, Steve began to test that question. With the help of local chemist Cory Hammock, he started experimenting wherever space allowed — not in a lab or a facility built for innovation, but wherever determination and raw materials could meet. That search led him home. The first attempts took shape in his bathtub. It was an unremarkable setting for something that would eventually become widely known, but it matched the season he was in —
improvised, uncertain, and driven more by necessity than vision. Early efforts were uneven. Mixtures didn’t always cooperate. Solutions separated instead of blending. The process required patience, attention, and trial after trial before anything came together the way it should. But slowly, something began to work. In 1980, that work took form as OdoBan. Designed with real conditions and real needs in mind, the product worked at the source, doing what it was intended to do — clean thoroughly and eliminate odor in the process. Without setting out to define a philosophy, Steve was already living one: pay attention to what isn’t working, stay with the problem, and don’t settle for partial solutions. From those early experiments, Steve’s vision began to take shape, with OdoBan at its center. Cory Hammock, now Vice President of Research and Development, has remained part of that story from the beginning. He often describes Steve’s determination in simple terms: a “no” doesn’t stop Steve; it simply redirects him. That quiet persistence — steady without being reckless — continues to shape how the company grows and adapts. What started in a bathtub in Warner Robins would eventually reach far beyond it — built the same way it began, one problem at a time.

Walking Humbly
For all that would come later, Steve Davison is careful not to tell his story as one of uninterrupted success. Growth did not arrive without seasons that tested his resolve and refined his character. There were moments when effort outweighed return, when progress felt uncertain, and when the work required more endurance than reward. Steve does not dwell on those chapters, but neither does he dismiss them. During one of those formative seasons, a mentor entered his life — someone whose influence would quietly shape how Steve understood business, leadership, and faith. The relationship was not built on transactions or titles. It was grounded in counsel, example, and integrity. That mentor once placed a simple reminder in Steve’s hand — words drawn from Scripture and centered on a clear call: to walk humbly with God. Micah 6:8 remains Steve’s favorite Scripture to this day. Its call to act justly, love mercy, and walk humbly continues to anchor him through challenge and success. Not as something to recite, but as a posture to live by. A photograph of that mentor still holds a place of significance for Steve — a reminder that true success is measured not only by growth or recognition, but by the humility with which the work is done and the faith that guides it.
Measured Growth, Lasting Reach
For Clean Control Corporation, growth came steadily and with intention. After years of persistence, Sam’s Club took a chance on the company in 1990. Recognizing the potential of OdoBan — and understanding the importance of focus — Steve sold his janitorial business and established Clean Control Corporation. By the mid-1990s, OdoBan was carried nationwide in Sam’s Club locations, opening the door for expanded product lines and wider distribution. From there, Clean Control continued to grow, guided by a philosophy Steve had held from the beginning: go one step further. Rather than masking problems, the company focused on solutions that addressed them at the source. Over time, that approach earned trust across homes, industrial settings, and institutional environments around the world. What began as a local solution to a practical problem became a globally recognized brand — built steadily, thoughtfully, and with gratitude for the opportunities that made that growth possible.

Finding Peace Beyond the Work
For all the motion of business, Steve has learned the importance of stillness. Peace, for him, isn’t found in the absence of responsibility, but in moments of intentional quiet. Most mornings begin early — coffee, reading, and space to think before the pace of the day begins. That rhythm allows him to steady himself before decisions are required. Outside of work, peace looks simpler. A weekend away with family. Time spent reading without an agenda. Long hours on his property, tending the land, working with his hands, or tinkering with a collection of vintage cars — restoring, adjusting, and appreciating the craftsmanship behind them. Underlying it all is faith. Steve speaks openly of the many times he believes God has protected him, guided him, and carried him through moments he could not have navigated alone. Faith, for him, is not separate from daily life; it is woven into it.
Carefully Crafted
That sense of intention extends beyond the walls of Clean Control and into Steve’s life at home as well. He and his wife, Jill, share a life shaped by faith, family, and a deep respect for craftsmanship. Jill is widely known for her quilting, but she also brings an entrepreneurial understanding of patience, discipline, and vision to her work. Their home reflects that same sensibility — thoughtfully designed to feel rooted and enduring rather than new for the
sake of being new. It echoes the values that guide their lives: craftsmanship over convenience, purpose over speed, and meaning built patiently over time.
Still Moving Forward
What stays with Steve is not a moment of arrival, but a sense of movement. It’s a familiarity shaped by long hours riding the railways years ago — watching the horizon unfold while thinking quietly about the future. That same steadiness continues to guide him today. Clean Control remains positioned to grow and adapt, anchored to the values that built it. Expansion is something to steward carefully. Success is something to hold with humility. For Steve Davison, the journey continues — steady, purposeful, and open to what lies ahead — moving forward not because of the pressure to arrive, but because the work itself still matters. More recently, Steve purchased Crown Candy in Macon, a company founded in 1917. Where that chapter leads is a story that will unravel in time. HCL Hometown Living At Its Best

Anita first began looking for some sort of hobby or interest to occupy her time after retiring from the work force, she shares that she refused to become a coach potato or sit idly watching life pass by and so she took a beekeeping class and from the moment the

horse business. KT Performance Horses offers top quality equine reproductive services, barrel horse training and tuning as well as a KT Performance Youth program. Tiffany and Kyle Noon hold two youth camps per year typically in the summer and fall where they work with youth barrel racers to encourage the youth and teen competitors to follow their passion full speed ahead, saddled up with reigns in hand. Tiffany shares that in certain circumstances services are offered through bartering because she believes in investing in people’s passion just as much as she enjoys the competition and profits of this profession too. Tiffany shares that when she meets local youth or families that are dedicated to showing up daily, putting in the work and willing to learn within the horse business industry it motivates her to do what she can to help keep that passion , enthusiasm and momentum going. A character trait she says is passed down from her parents and grandmother that she fully intends to pass onto her child too. This is one of the many reasons why hosting camps for youth, allowing youth to contribute their work efforts as they learn about raising and training their horses is important to the Noons. They want to pay forward what they have learned and mastered over the years so

that the future generations can do the same. The life lessons that Tiffany believes come from working in the horse business industry are to follow one’s passion and not allow the what if’s hold you back. Strong work ethic and determination far surpasses talent. Do not lose focus! If you want to achieve success do not get distracted. It is so easy with the distractions/judgements life can throw at you. Keep showing up everyday because it can happen fast or seem like forever but do not set a time limit on your happiness and success. The challenges Tiffany believes come from the horse industry business are testing one’s patience, resilience and humility too. Tiffany shares a valid point about working with horses to remember that the horse doesn’t have to do anything but eat, sleep and be, so asking the horse to go beyond those things takes time, commitment and a willingness to stay in the relationship together, a challenge that she hopes the youth she works with will apply to other areas of life too. Building resilience is a daily choice, and every morning when Tiffany gets up to begin her morning routine of coffee, breakfast and feeding the horses she’s doing just that.

For Tiffany Noon rather it’s hair or horses she and her husband Kyle, are doing just that, together they have built such a business, combining generations of strong work ethic, good wholesome family values and healthy competitive skills too.
Some highlights of being in the horse industry business are watching the youth achieve their goals, raising and training top barrel racing prospects, and seeing those top barrel prospects they had a hand in creating move on and have success in the futurity, derby, open and/or rodeo scene. Tiffany and Kyle have recently purchased a stud colt Tincan Jetolena for the basis of their breeding program going forward to breed with top quality mare power, for example, Janes Smooth Water a mare of theirs that has been successful in the barrel pen. and providing top quality fertility services that contribute to generations of champion horses. Tiffany and Kyle’s goals going forward are to hit the futurity scene in two years, taking it by surprise, watching their youth achieve goals raising and training top barrel prospects, which she shares isn’t so much about receiving grand titles or accolades as it is about the honor and pride that goes into the work and time invested into the business. And if you’re wondering what became of her hair business, turns out Tiffany has brought that along for the ride too. She still provides stylists services from her home salon that provides quite a beautiful view of horses and sunshine. When asked what keeps her internal motivation going to provide quality service and build solid community relationships, her answer is quite simple and returns to her roots yet again, Tiffany says she wants her parents to know that all the hard work they invested into raising her is being paid forward to many other horse loving youths out there who feel like they just don’t fit in with the crowd and last but certainly not least, Tiffany shares that she doesn’t want to disappoint her husband Kyle, who she says is unequivocally her soul mate and partner in life. She shares that not only are they independent in their own professional skills, they’re best friends, lovers and competitively motivate one another to keep fine tuning their skills too. Rather it’s hair and the salon chair or breeding, raising or training horses, Tiffany Noon does so with intention, passion and purpose. HCL Hometown Living At Its Best

Anchored & Aspiring to Love Others like Jesus
For owners Danielle Finch and Tabitha Walderman, success isn’t defined by sales, but by connection.
T
Two women, each from different backgrounds, upbringings, and social circles found common ground in their shared passion and testimonies to reach hearts and share the love of Jesus with as many people as possible. From that shared mission grew the foundation of a small-town Christian booktique with big dreams—dreams inspired by God and planted deep within the hearts of two faithful friends. The story of these two friends journey into business together sounds like the beginning of a storybook, “We were on a walk one day…”, and in many ways, it is. During that walk, they shared their hopes of opening a store together. One had always dreamed of owning a boutique or gift shop, while the other longed to open a Christian bookstore. Both shared a love for home décor, so their initial plan was to create a décor-focused business. Every time they sat down to order inventory, their hearts kept leading them back to devotionals, Bibles, and faithbased gifts. That’s when they knew God had called them to create a Christian booktique, a space where devotionals, bibles, a variety of beautiful clothing items, and home décor items all co-exist. Together, these two bright and talented women decided to turn their personal messes into a united message, stepping out in faith and trusting God to guide every step of the journey as they built their business together.

Magnolia Lane, a warm, elegant, and inviting Christian booktique nestled along Commerce Street in Hawkinsville, Georgia, might never have existed if two women hadn’t gone searching for clarity, understanding, restoration, redemption, forgiveness, hope, grace, love, empathy, compassion, and stewardship. Yet at the heart of this growing business lies something even more powerful: the genuine friendship between owners Danielle Finch and Tabitha Walderman. Sitting down and sharing personal time with Danielle and Tabitha, inside this warm and welcoming Christian booktique it became evident that God is in each of their individual hearts and lives, as well as at the core of their friendship too. These two women aren’t just friends, they are partners in doing God’s work. Their shared faith not only strengthens their bond but continues to grow with every personal and professional encounter they experience in their daily lives. Danielle shares that when you experience the love, grace, and presence of Jesus in your life firsthand, you can’t help but want others to know how that feels too. This desire to share Jesus in a tangible, meaningful way where one can feel the pages of a Bible, a devotional, or the softness of a favorite linen comes to life inside Magnolia Lane. The Christian
When asked what they hope the legacy of Magnolia Lane and of their steadfast friendship and partnership will be in the years to come, both women shared the same profound yet simple truth: that their service to others would encourage others to walk in faith with Jesus and stay anchored in his grace, mercy and love.

booktique is filled with uplifting books and thoughtfully chosen items that nourish the soul. Yet the greatest gift offered within its walls can’t be purchased or measured in dollars, because the price was already paid on the cross. For owners Danielle Finch and Tabitha Walderman, success isn’t defined by sales, but by connection. If a customer leaves feeling loved, seen, heard, and valued then that, is a good day’s work. Tabitha shares, we want people to come as they are. We encourage them to touch the books, share their thoughts, and take their time. We want everyone who walks through our doors to know that Jesus welcomes them and calls them worthy and so do we. Being intentional with their time and energy is nothing new for these two women, both in their personal lives and professional careers. full-time as a billing and insurance coordinator. Alongside their demanding careers, they are wear many titles as many women do as wives, mothers, and friends too. All of which brings daily trials and tribulations that come along with pursuing their God-sized dreams and doing their best to share Jesus’ love with everyone they encounter even when it’s been a challenging or hard day. Both attest to not always getting it right or doing it perfectly each day, yet both share that is beauty of God’s grace and so on the harder days, they do their best to share that with each other and others too. Both women openly acknowledge that their journeys haven’t been without hardship. They’ve faced seasons of grief after losing parents and grandparents, navigated the growing pains that come with maturing in relationships, weathered the challenges of marriage and parenting, and wrestled with that timeless question—what is the

one thing I’m meant to do to leave a meaningful mark on this world? For Danielle and Tabitha, that answer has become clear: to stay anchored in their faith and aspire use Magnolia Lane as a space where others can encounter the love and hope of Jesus. Magnolia Lane’s beginnings were humble—starting as an online-only business in August 2023. Danielle and Tabitha laugh as they recall those early days, strategically storing merchandise in every available space at home. What began as a simple online shop soon grew into something bigger when, in December 2023, they were “gifted” with an incredible opportunity. Through the kindness and support of Drew Cravey, they received their first temporary store space in Hawkinsville. In May 2024, God opened the door, once again, for them to move to a larger location nestled in the middle of downtown Hawkinsville. He also brought them the most wonderful team of employees. Looking back, Danielle and Tabitha share that God’s hand and favor have been evident at every stage of their journey—from that first walk where they shared their hopes and dreams, to the thriving bookstore and boutique they now manage together. Along the way, they’ve felt God’s presence through countless encounters with others and credit much of who they are as women and as business owners to the people who have poured into their lives. For Danielle, that influence comes from memories of her mother; for Tabitha, from her Nana, Iris Stubbs. Both also lovingly honor Nancy Young, a “sweet heavenly soul,” whose

constant encouragement and presence blessed them deeply. Today, Danielle and Tabitha continue to run Magnolia Lane guided by the same biblical principles that inspired its creation. Their shelves are filled with faith-based and uplifting materials, but the heart of the Christian booktique goes beyond inventory—it’s built on generosity, stewardship, and service. Magnolia Lane provides a welcoming space for Bible studies, offering comfort and privacy for reflection and fellowship. Visitors will also find a “free book” shelf, encouraging customers to take a book or leave one as they feel led. By leading through Christlike example, Danielle and Tabitha ensure that Magnolia Lane is far more than a business, it is a ministry of love, faith, and community. When asked what they hope the legacy of Magnolia Lane and of their steadfast friendship and partnership will be in the years to come, both women shared the same profound yet simple truth: that their service to others would encourage others to walk in faith with Jesus and stay anchored in his grace, mercy and love. The Magic of
Mistletoe Market Twenty years of Mistletoe Market have created many memories for club members and shoppers.
E
Each November, thousands of shoppers enter the doors of Perry’s Mistletoe Market, embarking upon one of the best shopping events in the Southeast. Shoppers from all over discover unique gifts, home furnishings, Christmas wreaths and decor, clothes, art, jewelry, and more from their favorite shoppes and boutiques. As they walk the aisles of this annual event, the holiday spirit comes alive and shoppers begin to embrace the excitement of the Christmas season. The shopping experience is festive and fabulous, but it is the magic of Mistletoe Market spreading throughout the community and touching the lives of many children and families that truly make it a success. Organized by the Balvaunuca Club, a service league of thirty-five women, the event began as a small holiday market in 2005. Club member, Lisa Hays, and two of her neighbors, Jackie Price and Angie Mitchum, had coordinated a shopping event the previous year of just a few vendors at Perry Country Club and thought it would be a great fund-raising project for the club.

“Mistletoe Market, from the very beginning, has always been about how we, as a small group of women, can join together and make a real difference in our community,” shares Hays, who has served as the event Chairman since its inception twenty years ago. “We realized that not only could our event raise funds for local charities, it could also help vendors, especially small business owners, many of whom are women, experience a great weekend of sales, all in one location, in one weekend. Over the years, we have seen vendors be able to grow their businesses, and our club has been able to donate so much more to charity.” Since the first market twenty years ago, the Balvanuca Club has donated over $867,000 to local charities, schools, and organizations throughout the Perry, Houston County, and central Georgia area. Members anticipate the total will exceed one million dollars once donations are distributed following this year’s event. In 2024, the club donated to fifty different charities from monies raised by Mistletoe Market. Two local charities, Perry Volunteer

“Mistletoe Market is truly a unique shopping extravaganza,” adds Hays. “We all love to shop and find great stores, fabulous boutiques, and just really neat stuff, and our event lets you do all of that in one location right here in Perry. It’s really a special event and an outpouring of support - from all of these years, from thousands of shoppers, and from hundreds of vendors - that have all helped Mistletoe Market touch the lives of many people in our community.”

Outreach and the Loaves and Fishes Community Food Bank, remain the main focuses of the club since the first event. Funds from Mistletoe Market established a family fund at each one of the public elementary, middle, and high schools serving Perry residents. Funds also provide for two $2,000 scholarships each May to graduating seniors, one from Perry High School and one from The Westfield School, who have demonstrated outstanding service to his or her community. Club member Marla Sellers serves as Vendor Chairman of the event and also as a member of the Mistletoe Market Steering Committee. She was the club president in 2005 for the first event. “Our goals the first year were to have fifty vendors at Mistletoe Market and to be able to raise enough money to give $10,000 back to the community. We met our goal, distributing $12,000 raised at the event that first year. Each year the number of shoppers has increased, the number of vendors has exceeded one hundred, and last year’s event donated more than $117,000 to charity.”

Over the years, the event has grown in size and scale. In 2018, the club added a special preview event on Thursday evening called “Moonlight at Mistletoe.” This special ticketed event offers a limited number of shoppers the opportunity to see and shop the event first in a less crowded and stroller-free environment before the doors open to the public on Friday morning. Additionally, the Balvanuca Club encouraged other local women’s service organizations to join in the event and raise funds for their own club projects. The Tahseria Club of Perry offers a “Split the Pot” fundraiser during Mistletoe Market, while Balvaunuca contracts with the Sogadera Club to handle all of the vendor hospitality needs throughout the weekend. Vendors are a tremendous part of what makes Mistletoe Market special. “Our event features businesses here locally that are such a wonderful part of our downtown in Perry, so it is really neat to see people from all over the Southeast come to the event and meet our local shop owners,”

Sellers shares. “It is also neat to see and meet vendors from other communities who come to Mistletoe every year and spend a weekend here with us!” Club members honor a special vendor each year by making a donation to that vendor’s favorite charity. “We get to know these vendors, and they become like family to us. We are glad to be able to donate to a special charity each year that has affected the life of one of our vendors or someone in their family,” explains Kathy James, a member of the Mistletoe Market Steering Committee. Over the years, the club has made donations on behalf of vendors to charities including the Central Georgia Autism Association, Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta, Muscular Sclerosis Association, Now I Lay Me Down to Sleep, Jay’s HOPE, and Celebrate Recovery. Twenty years of Mistletoe Market have created many memories for club members and shoppers. Hays recalls one of her favorite memories which led to the late University of Georgia Coach Vince Dooley being a featured author for eighteen years. “As a club, our focus for donations has always been women, children, and literacy, so we wanted a female author who would draw

interest from the community and shoppers to the event. I knew Barbara Dooley had written a book. I looked her up and learned that, in addition to being an author, she also was a realtor in Athens. So, I called her number and left a message inviting her to come to MIstletoe Market. She didn’t call back, so in two weeks I called her again. The funny thing was that both times I called her from the funeral home, but the voicemail I left asked her to call my cell phone number. [Hays was employed by and is currently the owner of Watson-Hunt Funeral Home in Perry.] When I called the second time, repeating the invitation, she said, ‘Honey, I called you back, and did you know I got a funeral home?!’ After Hays explained her connection with the funeral home, Dooley said, “Listen, I can’t come that weekend, but Vince can!’ So, after Coach Dooley came to Mistletoe Market the first time, it was clear that he loved being there, signing and selling books, and visiting with fans of all ages. Barbara loved to shop and always came with him when she could. And they came every year until he passed away.” Today, there are twelve active Balvaunuca Club members who were members in 2005 for the very first Mistletoe Market event. These members, along with women who have joined the club since, retain their positions and duties each year to ensure all runs smoothly. Committees meet and work throughout the year to plan and operate this event in coordination with the Georgia National Fairgrounds and Agricenter. This year’s event offers shoppers the chance to purchase digital tickets in advance through the club’s new partnership with Humanitix.
