letterEDITOR I can still close my eyes and vividly remember how, as a little girl, my stomach would flutter with pure excitement as the two tall columns would come into view as we turned left off the main highway. Just beyond the grand entry was our ticket to Summer.

Welcome to Jekyll Island.

It always felt like time stood still and the world was there just for us. Would we see sharks? Would we find the perfect seashell? It seemed the days stretched on just for our pleasure as we soaked in all the sand and sun. We spent the time building sandcastles on end, only to have them washed away and start again fresh the next day. I can still hear the gentle waves that reached their way to the strong rocks, which were the only barrier between land and sea. It was always mesmerizing to me as a child…how it simply stopped with a jolt and receded back to the sky.

The beaches held such magic for us through the years as we

grew into adults and began our own families. Perhaps there was no greater joy than when I watched our one-year-old son run without inhibition straight into the salty beach waves squealing with baby joy. Nine years later, he can’t wait to get across that beautiful bridge, pointing out anything that catches his eye along the way.

The Golden Isles area has grown and morphed so much through the years into so many shapes and sizes, but one thing that remains is that the simple elegant charm has never lost its luster. Locals know the treasure they have for what they call home, while visitors who are experiencing it all for a season, feel the wonder at their fingertips.

Tocal aims to merge the old-world charm of this area with the modern times. We will integrate tourist and local reader involvement to explore your own backyard by utilizing technology that shares your experiences with the world.

Our family has been in publishing for over 30 years and consider it such a joy to do what we love. People are our passion and the relationships we have built through this venue give us such gratitude for all the good we see in the world. We are honored to serve so many amazing areas in our beloved state of Georgia and are proud to produce publications that feature such amazing entrepreneurs and fascinating clientele.

We are so grateful to be a part of this community. The Golden Isles holds

a special place in our family’s heart as we are 4th generation vacationers. While Patti’s parents owned rental homes on Jekyll, she grew up with an insatiable love for the area as she life guarded her way through early adulthood here in the local waters. This passion was passed on to her children and extended to the grandchildren that can’t wait for each Summer to spend together soaking up the rich air, sun and sand of the beaches. Our roots are as deep and strong as the gorgeous landscape trees that surround these islands.

Ghosts & Legends of Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation — On April 5, 13, 19, 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m., you can tour Georgia's most haunted Rice Plantation. Journey back in time to a period in our history that is mercifully gone forever. A Ghosts and Legends walking tour will let you explore centuries old Live Oak trees, the plantation out-buildings, and end with a lantern tour of the plantation house. You will hear all about recent ghost encounters and plantation folklore. The location is 5556 U.S. Hwy 17 N. Brunswick, Georgia.

Cost is $15 per adult. For more information, call 912 264-7333.

Easter Egg Hunt, Hofwyl-Broadfield Plantation — Saturday, April 6th, 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. A couple of weeks early, this is the largest Easter Egg Hunt in our area. Over 3,000 toy-filled eggs will be available for hunting for kids age 1-3, 4-6, and 7-10. Each age group will have its own hunt area. The Easter Bunny will be on hand the whole time. Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for seniors, $5 for youth, with age 5 and under free. The Plantation is at 5556 U.S. Hwy 17 N. Brunswick, Georgia. For additional information, call 912 264-7333.

Spring Art in the Park — April 6th and 7th, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Postell Park at the Pier Village on St. Simons. This is one of the largest and perhaps the best Arts & Crafts Shows presented on the island. Vendors from all over the region make this show a must, giving you a plethora of choices in buying some very unique art and crafts. For this show, food trucks will appear to satisfy your thirst and hunger in case you're too weak to walk to one of the nearby restaurants. Entrance is free.

Nao Santa Maria — April 9th–14th at Brunswick Landing Marina in Brunswick.

10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Tickets $10 adults / $5 kids / $25 family. Tickets available at the dock or at www.naosantamaria.org. First time in the USA. The Blessing of the Fleet — May 11th, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. at Mary Ross Waterfront Park in Brunswick. Free to public. This is an all day event to celebrate the Shrimp Fleet as they start the season fishing off our waters. There will be fresh seafood, water sports, and arts & entertainment. This is one of our most popular events, and is a great way to spend the day while taking in the

Sea Islands Festival — June 1st at Gasgoigne Bluff on St. Simons. 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. Free to public. This is an event to promote the culture and history of African-Americans of the coastal barrier islands. It's a fun day that also lets you learn things you didn't know. There is live entertainment all day long. A variety of arts and crafts vendors and food service including fresh seafood are available the whole day. This is an event that you will remember a very long time.

RECURRING EVENTS

First Friday in Downtown Brunswick — On the first Friday of every month, downtown Brunswick will host an event from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m., where all the shops, galleries, and restaurants will stay open late and serve wine and snacks.

There will be live music in the Signature Squares, creating a festive atmosphere for shopping and dining. A great event for tourists and locals.

A Little Light Music Concert Series — Varying dates on Sunday nights, starting in May and ending in September. This is a concert series featuring top notch bands performing different kinds of music. It is held on and around the St. Simons Lighthouse grounds by the ocean. Entrance is $12 per adult, children under 12 free. You are encouraged to bring comfortable lawn chairs and coolers with your favorite food and drink, so you can sit back, relax, and enjoy the music. The weather, smells, and views are always fantastic for these events. For specific information, call 912 634-7099.
