TRAINING OPPORTUNITY

Advanced Bike Maintenance Award

Well done to 4 volunteers from New Wortley Community Centre who have been creating a welcoming space for residents to come and get their bike checked out at their Bike Repair Café (every Monday and Tuesday 9am – 1pm). Having completed the Intermediate Bike Maintenance Course (which is being delivered for free currently by Leeds Bike Mill, in partnership with Cycle North and funded by City Connect), Get Set Leeds Local funded the 4 volunteers from New Wortley Community Centre to do the 2 day Advanced Bike Maintenance course, also delivered by Leeds Bike Mill. Having passed the 4 volunteers have gained confidence, and taken ownership of the repair space. The course covered elements of bike servicing such as brake cable replacement, calliper adjustment, puncture prevention and gears.

Run Leeds Food Bank Run

The Run Leeds Project were initially approached by Sarah Donaghy from a Hampshire based run club. As a Welfare Officer, she was more than aware of the real spike in demand for foodbanks, due to the cost-of-living crisis, and the shortages faced during the winter months.

She had the fantastic idea to make this a national movement and wanted our support to add to the momentum in Leeds. Run Leeds started to promote the idea through the Run Leeds socials and wrote an article for the website. They soon found lots of Leeds Run Clubs were also starting to organise foodbank runs, with the Recovery Runners doing a huge donation drop as part of their Christmas fun run which Run Leeds went along to support.

Working together with Leeds Girls Can, and a local foodbank, the Run Leeds and Leeds Girls Can Ambassadors joined forces to launch their own foodbank run starting at Kirkstall in December. The second Foodbank run was organised for February, when donation shortages become an acute problem. Everyone was pleased to see an even bigger turnout, with lots of donations for the foodbank.

The Run Leeds Ambassadors also supported similar events at their local run clubs, it is amazing to see the momentum grow, and communities working together to support their most vulnerable people, whilst doing something active, that they enjoy.
