Switch Fringe Festival Reimagining Ipswich

Thurs 20th June Fringe Hop Switch Fringe is a 16 day annual music and arts festival taking place throughout Ipswich, Suffolk. We are a non-profit community group that serves to promote, inspire, unify and celebrate the extraordinary creativity in our town, alongside some very special national guests. More than half the events are free, and the rest are a tenner or less.

From June 20th til July 6th our wicked town centre pubs, clubs and venues will be invaded by bands and bards, DJs and MCs, stand-up poets and spoken word entertainers, award winning beat boxers and dazzling burlesque dancers.

Grace was mentored by former female world beatbox champion Bellatrix and has spent the past five years gigging and touring the country. She is a key member of Shlomo’s Vocal Orchestra which has just had a six week residency as the headlining act at the E4 Underbelly tent on the South Bank. Grace has also been singing and playing guitar from an early age and for the past year she has been developing her song writing skills; unleashing an eclectic array of songs that could melt the iciest of hearts.

Switch Hop is on the 3rd Thursday of every month at No.16 and is the brainchild of local DJs The Decibel Kid and Psyone. The night is devoted to Intelligent Electronic Music, which translates as anything from Glitch to Garage and from Trip Hop to Trance. Not your usual shiny happy pop chart shiz featuring some tonecorrected pinup female or wannabe gangsta, mind, but the proper underground stuff for the discerning punter.

thejohnrussellgallery.co.uk Switch Fringe is proud to welcome to the Festival for the very first time, this fantastic Art Gallery situated on the waterfront which has proudly been supporting the Arts in Ipswich for over 30 years. We are featuring their exhibition from contemporary landscape painter Barry Andrews which runs from June 3rd til June 29th.

“Like other artists I absorb what I see and what I feel, which I record in my sketch books, and through the process of ‘logic and observation’ I discover that which is important to me. It is my responsibility to conduct credible research and to present the viewer with an accurate interpretation through painting, the success of which can only be judged by the increased level of understanding, or motivation to ask questions.”

Snobs Coffee established itself in Gallery One of the Town Hall during last year’s Switch Fringe and has never left! So it is a great pleasure to be able to highlight their first birthday celebrations. They have worked tirelessly over the year to bring unique events, artwork and incredible coffee to our fair town. The night features live DJ sets from a local guys and gals, a bit of live music, local beer & wine and general merriment until 1am. They will be open throughout the Fringe, just walk up the town hall steps and enter Ipswich’s funkiest, local and independent cafe.

Tonight they celebrate the longest day of the year with a curated musical feast for the heart, soul and mind. Combining highly danceable rhythms with quirky, sometimes emotionally charged lyrics, their unique blend of instrumentation gives a warmth with occasional hints of Eastern Europe. Featuring Elly on vocals/baritone ukulele, Simon on bass/bazouki, Antonio on mandolin, Mark on drums/percussion and occasionally Cad turns up to fiddle with them. Also featuring Jake Samuels and The Djeli Effect, with the percussive talents of Stehen Pugh, also playing cello, with Josh Doughty on the kora.

Denial Twist - formed as the Short Man Blues in 2011 this Colchester garage-rock band have sometimes played to crowds numbering well over ten people. The 4130’s - a “BMXcore” band made up of bits n pieces of Knee Deep, Remains Unfound & Dangers Close with their blend of socially aware lyrics, pounding guitars and bass!

Mon 24th June Efterklang ‘The Ghost of Piramida’

Having stumbled into the multimedia tent at the Big Chill back in 2005 the nonsuchdjs witnessed one of the most spellbinding musical performances ever, changing their perceptions of music, musical structure and pretty much everything else relating to performance as they knew it. They’ve since seen Efterklang live more times than they can count, from small under-supported gigs at Norwich Arts Centre to Britten Sinfonia backed performances at the Barbican in London.

The Ghost of Piramida was released to critical acclaim in 2012 and is directed by Andreas Koefeod. The film is based on the album Piramida, the album itself being based around field recordings made on a visit to Piramida a deserted mining town in the arctic circle.

The album received critical reviews. There will be a free after-party across the road at The Swan with the nonsuchdjs on the decks.

Jointly funded by nonsuchdjs and Switch Fringe this is a free showing of the second Efterklang film The Ghost of Piramida.

“Here’s a band at the top of the world and on top of their game… Piramida is a revelation” - Q Magazine Efterklang formed in 2000 in Copenhagen, the core of the band are three school friends Casper Clausen, Mads Brauer and Rasmus Stolberg. They have released four albums to date plus one live album. In 2010 they joined forces with Vincent Moon - whose many credits include working with REM, The National and Arcade Fire – to release the film “An Island”.

Dead Poets are a Peterborough-based Spoken Word double act consisting of Mark Grist and MC Mixy. Since forming in 2008, Mark and Mixy have been traveling the country, challenging peoples’ preconceptions of both poetry and hip hop. They’ve produced work for Film4, BBC3 and Channel 4. They’re bringing a scratch of their newest show to Ipswich for it’s first EVER live airing.

They’re really excited and they honestly don’t know how the show ends - the Ipswich audience will be the ones who decide.

How about Tennyson battling it out with Christina Rosetti? Internationally renowned chiptune musician, educator, published academic author, video game designer and PhD research student returns to play a rare live set in his hometown of Ipswich.

Since 2006 he has released three studio albums, two large scale musical works, four soundtracks and won several awards for both his music and design work. He is the founder of Creative Computer Club, CCC4Kids and Ipswich Game Developers Network. He is currently studying for his PhD in “Educational Music Technology” at De Montfort University in Leicester.

Support comes in the electronic shape of: TReeN – Bangin dub-techno duo who’ve supported the likes of Coppe and played at Slackspace, so much fun they ought to be illegal. Languid – Master hiphop/ soul beatmaker with lightning fingers inspired by the likes of FlyLo and Nujabes. The Decibel Kid – Dance music produced out of live video playback of escalators & trains, amongst other things. Astroboy – Textured soundscapes that transcend words and resonate on a purely subconscious, emotional level. Poisk - will be inhabiting the top floor for a unique, one-day experimental electronic music installation piece from 5pm til 11pm.

Webbys Jam Night FREE The Royal Oak 8pm Webby ‘The Drum Doctor’ is a stalwart of the Ipswich music scene and his regular weekly jam nights have spawned, developed and encouraged pretty much every musician in Ipswich, at some point in their musical career. Always fun and friendly this jam night is a great place to meet fellow music lovers, gain some more performance experience or even just chill with a beer. Newbies and Pros are equally welcome. Ian B Trainy Photography Exhibiton

Local dance company, headed by community dance graduate Ollie Tibble, presents a unique film about the role of men in society, made in partnership with KJC Productions. Both companies were born out of the University Campus Suffolk and its a great pleasure to be able to support young artists and entrepreneurs as part of Switch Fringe 2013.

New DJ Night FREE No 16 Tacket Street – 8pm Always fancied yourself as a musical connoisseur? Then this is the gig for you. An open decks DJ night for all electronic deejays, so bring your MP3’s, CD’s or even just your iPod, then plug in and play. Sets are limited to 30 minutes per person. All genres and levels of skill are equally welcome.

Ian is an Ipswich based photographer, crazy mad music lover and railway enthusiast. He joined the Switch Fringe family in 2012 and has become a much loved and valued member of the team. His unwavering support of the local music scene means he has furiously been attending, and working at gigs around the region for over 30 years. Throughout Switch Fringe 2013 Ian will be exhibiting the best of his private collection on poster boards at The Royal Oak, The Steamboat and No 16, amongst others. His ‘Cultural Collages’ allow for an unusual, never before seen dip into the hidden underbelly of the thriving original music scene so check them out next time you’re popping in for a cold one.

FREE Snobs at Ipswich Town Hall – 7pm Set up by Ipswich based musicians, Gavin Mitchell, Mischa Pearson and James Morgan, Boho Daze provides a platform for people to share their music in a fun environment. Supporting unsigned talent, this wicked bunch of creative folk are taking Ipswich by storm, so get down early and book a slot.

TV Smith £5 The Steamboat – 8pm TV Smith is one of the most talented, literate and passionate yet curiously overlooked songwriters to emerge from London’s vibrant ‘77 new wave punk scene. Smith formed The Adverts in late ‘76 with his girlfriend Gaye and press criticism of the band’s alleged musical ineptitude was answered by a defiant and iconic debut single, One Chord Wonders.

The band received a lot of press attention and a promising future beckoned. However, after a well-received but under performing debut LP and a critically acclaimed follow-up, The Adverts suffered an acrimonious collapse. Pushed to the margins of the music industry by shifting musical trends, Smith’s persistence is finally paying dividends.

He has carved out a career as a solo artist and troubadour and painstakingly built a new audience through constant touring.

A cracking band who have been causing quite a stir across the region. Sheryl from The Spread Eagle says ‘They are one of my favourite bands and I can’t recommend them highly enough’ and we all know this wicked landlady puts on some of Ipswich’s best live music nights so swing by and get your Rockabilly dancing shoes on.

Swanfest £tbc The Swan Times vary Friday 28th - Sunday 30th June Swanfest has been brining the best bands to Ipswich for over 10 years and has featured such well known artists as Mumford and Sons and Ed Sheeran before they were famous. A raucous 3 day live music event run by proper music lovers.

FREE No 16 Tacket Street – 8pm Described as having a ‘beautiful voice’ and the ability to write ‘truthful words that come from the heart’, Pete Clough is a talented Singer and Acoustic Guitarist, based in Ipswich. With a background playing and singing in rock bands, Pete has emerged as an inspired musician and writer, drawing from personal experiences and relationships that have shaped him to the man he is today.

Also featuring singer songwriters Daniel Story and Anna Pancaldi who was recently selected by Radio 1’s Huw Stephens to tour the UK’s O2 academies supporting Rudimental, Rita Ora and The Noisettes, playing at Ronnie Scotts to a sell out audience.

Described as “sensational”. Anna is currently recording her debut EP which is due for release at the end of this year.

STEP39 Is a graffiti artist from the east of England who had been painting in abandoned and unloved spaces since the mid 1980s. He works with land owners and private individuals to find safe legal spaces for people to be creative in and on. Painting both traditional graffiti lettering and huge portraits he is nationally and internationally recognised as one of the UK’s most prolific and diverse graffiti writers. His client base includes Red Bull, the BBC, The Benjamin Foundation, NorwIch City Council and many schools and youth groups around the UK.

West End Music Busking Day

The Photo Hunt 2013 FREE Ipswich – 11am

facebook.com/banda.foto The Photo Hunt is a creative photography competition for amateur photographers. Established in 2008 in Bucharest, Romania by Banda Foto this will be the first time it has been run in two countries simultaneously.

The aim of the hunt is for teams of amateur photographers to follow a route given by the organizers, taking photographs based on themes along the way, with the ultimate goal of being voted the most creative team of photographers in the competition.

Two of the founding members of Banda Foto - Chris Filip and Maria Barte - are currently 3rd Year Computer Games Design students at University Campus Suffolk in Ipswich. This will be their 8th edition of the hunt, meet them at 11am at No 16 Tacket St for your starting orders. Remember to bring your kit and a sharp pair of eyes!

Poetree Walks with Bards In The Woods, is for all tree-loving people and their families, where ever they live. “In March 2012 I discovered that a few Bards in the west of Ireland were starting Bards in the Woods days, as part of their National Tree week. I loved the idea, and wondered if it could be done here in Suffolk. I contacted two of their organizers: poets John Wilmott and Edward Durand and asked their opinion. They were very forthcoming with support and encouragement, and with the help and support of Su Fox from Poetree Walks Bards in The Woods (Suffolk) was launched in April 2012 and was a huge success!”

Mon 1st July Backwater Records presents... Roger Eno, live score to Charlie Chaplin’s The Gold Rush (U)

Roger Eno is a composer and sound artist who cannot be easily categorised. His work has been experienced at Snap: Art at Aldeburgh Festival and Ambicon in California already this year. Roger’s powerful and versatile body of work easily lends itself to, and is frequently used in, TV, theatre and film.

“Film scoring is an art form that has developed since the era of the silent cinema in a role of subservience and accompaniment. Its main attributes are its invisibility, and the slightest tiny musical element can alter a film’s journey and your experience of it.”

The Gold Rush was among Chaplin’s personal favourites, a comic fable set in the Alaskan Gold-fields.

With a repertoire of new songs and a load of bottled energy, be prepared to be amazed. Moon Street - kicking things up a little with their blend of Ska & Indie, making sure that everyone is skanking in the middle of the dance floor and we mean everyone!

A new enterprise for Ipswich that aims to inject innovation and intelligence back into the local music scene. This will be our opening and we have a very special guest joining us from Wembley, London, the wonderful Dean Atta, a writer and performance poet.

He has been commissioned to write poems for the Damilola Taylor Trust, Keats House Museum, National Portrait Gallery, Tate Britain and Tate Modern.

“The Gil Scott Heron of his generation” Charlie Dark Dean won the 2012 London Poetry Award and was named as one of the most influential LGBT people by the Independent on Sunday Pink List 2012. He was asked to perform a poem as a part of the ever-growing platform SB.TV which has now received just short of 50,000 views. Atta is the truth and someone who shares his perspectives on race, sexuality and London life with all who crosses his path.

He will be supported by Yoji Munu & Support Band – an original artist who uses her influences as cornerstones when developing her sound. In 2012 she won an industry accredited award for ‘‘best song’’ at the International Music

Rowan James – Ipswich’s spoken word ambassador delivering a poetry set intermingled with the first chance to experience his new exploits combing words and music. Booda French - fresh from an international tour and continuing his transformation from the rapper Truth to a master of prose. Lewis Buxton - President of the Creative writing Society at UEA. Lewis writes and performs well-crafted poetry sure to make you smile cry and gasp in quick succession. Piers Harrison Reid - will be joining us for an enchanted rip through forests and memories of childhood between playing American football and end of year Nursing exams. Catherine Woodward - a unique and exceptionally poignant poet who touches upon an array of subjects and styles from the hilarious to the sad. Theo Best - a captivating poet and actor who delivers his poetry with calm confidence and who has more masters degrees than most people have had hot dinners.

Girls Girls Girls have put on beautiful, packed-out events at London’s St Pancras Old Church, Dalston Old Boys Club, The Wilmington Arms, and Shoreditch Church, and in November 2012 undertook an incredible seven date tour around England.

Audiovisual artist The Decibel Kid has utilised customwritten computer magic to construct dance music – and a live video accompaniment – from escalators and trains. His next piece of work ups-the ante and will involve collecting sights and sounds from all of the Switch Fringe events and then over 12 hours collating them into a 1 or 2 hour long presentation. Part musical composition, part DJ set, part video-art and wholly unattempted. It will involve 3 projectors, 3 laptops, a PA and a whole load of wires. Drop in and check on his progress throughout the day, buy him a sandwich, and be sure to be there at 9pm when he presses Play.
