The sun just shines brighter in spring. “Spring cleaning” is not just about your home. It can also be about cleaning up your life too. I have always been a huge believer in making change for the better. Plus, I have grown up with parents who were hell bent on instilling in my two sisters and I that we can be anything and do anything … and if we are not happy with a situation, we can change it. It is our choice and up to no one else but us. Pretty good advice, don’t you think? More than 12 months ago I left my marriage, separated from my ex-husband and am now what one of my great friends calls a “hot divorcee”. Without airing any dirty laundry, it wasn’t working any more and something had to give.

DO

THE PROPOSAL HERE COMES THE BRIBE...

About a year before that, I left my full-time job with a well-known international media organisation and started two businesses. I was stressed to the eyeballs and something had to give. It was my health or my job.

GIRLS NIGHT IN FOR BREAST CANCER

Change can be a really great thing. Today I have so many wonderful opportunities coming my way. I’m in love with life and have never been happier than I am right now sitting here writing this to you.

Price: $29 per person Date: Friday 9th October 2015 Time: 5pm Gates Open - 7pm Movie Screening Inclusions: Street Food, Pink Cocktail & $5 donation Bookings: Booking are essential BYO: Deck Chair & Blanket

You don’t have to live a life of pain, misery, sadness, anger, overwhelm and stress. You don’t have to be “a certain sort of someone” to change your life. You don’t have to wait for the right time. Today is the right time and all it takes is one step.

For reservations phone 07 5530 9048 or email: events@linkshopeisland.com.au

Big changes start with small steps and then you keep taking small steps to design a life you love. You can do it, we believe in you. Follo

What’s hot in homewares? Hemisphere Living can help you transform your house into a home with these simple tips and products Tell us about Hemisphere Living? Hemisphere Living was established in June 2010 at the Homeworld Helensvale Complex. This was a great building block for our business and it went from strength to strength. However, we grew out of those premises and wanted to take Hemisphere to the next level. In June 2015 we opened our brand-new purpose-built showroom on Siganto Drive in Helensvale, we couldn’t be happier and it’s proving a great success. What is your creative edge? We offer something unique and different that you won’t find anywhere else. We have expanded our product range to include bedroom suits, a much larger outdoor furniture selection and the opportunity to carry more stock lines in general. We are committed to providing highquality solid timber furniture that is made from ecologically sustainable or recycled timber. All our products have been personally selected

for their quality, character and difference. We also have the ability to manufacture custom sizes for our clients within our product range. This is definitely one of our draw cards. What products do you offer in store? We offer a wide selection of homewares and decor pieces from candles, pots, lamps, vases and cushions to a beautiful range of rugs, including Bayliss rugs. There is always something new arriving, which keeps it exciting for our customers. What are some of your top tips for buying for the home? Keep it simple. Take the time to choose a colour or theme that works for you because at the end of the day you’re the one who spends time in the space and it has to make you feel good. Don’t feel like you have to rush and get everything all at once, you will make better decisions if you do one area at a time. What will be the popular themes in homeware this spring/summer?

10

Brass, copper and gold are still on-trend for the season. We have some fabulous new lamps and decor pieces in store right now. Colours in cushions and throws are directed very much towards neutrals, greys, mints and corals. What must we go out and buy now? A new rug. It can totally transform a room. LIFE STYLE

Overhaul your life Sometimes making small changes in each area of your life can be overwhelming, albeit rewarding. One of the best ways to overcome the challenge is to just start with small steps ake a look around your home, is there any decluttering you can do? What about your car? Is it in need of some TLC or is a new one on the cards? And how’s your credit card looking? Time to pay that baby off? Here are three ways you can tidy up your life.

Out with the old If you’ve looked around your place and noticed your style could do with an upgrade, why not get rid of the items that aren’t doing you justice any more and invest in some new ones? Regardless of whether they are old or new, there are easy ways to get a new look. Buying new is always fun, or you can look to

antique shops, garage sales or online arenas such as eBay or Gumtree. The newbie on the block when it comes to online second-hand is the app Bountye, where you can buy and sell items.

Time for an upgrade There’s nothing nicer than that new-car smell. If it’s been time for an upgrade for longer than you’d care to think about, maybe you need a helping hand? Choosing a new or secondhand car is an exciting time, but it can also be overwhelming. There’s plenty of research you can do, such as talking to friends and family members, taking a few vehicles for a test drive and jumping online to check out reviews and new releases.

Have a look in forums too and see what people are saying about the wheels you want to get. You can also check out CarAdvice, CarSales and CarsGuide for expert opinions.

In the black Sadly, we wish we were talking about being in your little black dress. But it’s time to get savvy about your finances and that includes your credit cards (yes, there may be more than one), loans and any other form of debt. There are plenty of organisations and online platforms that can help you get your finances under control, but you could start with Credit Savvy to determine your creditworthiness.

GET HAPPY

Top 10 habits of extremely people

e all crave happiness, wouldn’t you agree? We work hard to get a good job, get married, buy a house and start a family – but what if you check all these boxes and you’re still not happy? Happiness and wellness consultant Dr Bruce Wells says the problem is we are looking in the wrong places. “Research in positive psychology shows while a portion of our happiness is due to our genes and life circumstances, 40 per cent is determined by our daily thoughts, emotions and behaviours,” he says. “This is fantastic news because it suggests the best path to happiness can be found by examining the characteristics of happy people. You probably know some of these people. It’s like they have taken out a happiness subscription.” Here are the top 10 habits of extremely happy people. Practice daily and you will enjoy greater personal and professional fulfilment in your life. Live your life your way A hospice nurse wrote a book called The Top Five Regrets of the Dying. The no.1 regret was, “I wish I’d had the courage to live a life true to myself, not the life others expected of me.” Don’t let the expectations of others rob you of your own dreams and goals. Make the choices that are right for you and then take action today. Use your strengths Gallup polls reveal only one-in-four people use their strengths every day. When you do, you are not only six times more likely to be engaged in your job, but you also feel more confident, energised and happier about life. Dr Wells, the author of Happiness Anywhere Anytime, says identify your strengths by listing those things you enjoy doing, do effortlessly and that make you feel alive and fulfilled.

3 4 5 6

Instead of waiting for happiness to come into your life, make your own

Live with a meaningful purpose It’s amazing how people come together as one in times of national tragedy. A sense of meaning is suddenly given to people’s lives and they respond magnificently. Your best self has a chance to shine when you live with a meaningful purpose. Create your own purpose by identifying a cause you passionately believe in and that allows you to utilise your strengths and energy. Cherish your health Exercise releases a cocktail of chemicals that helps keep your heart healthy, reduces weight, aids in sleep quality, and bolsters self-confidence. It also alleviates stress and makes you more resilient. Remember to include a balanced diet and seven hours of sleep. Cultivate optimism The happiest people put an optimistic spin on whatever happens in their lives. They ditch the notion of something being fair or unfair, instead just accepting what is. Every situation is a life-learning opportunity. Optimism leads to less stress, longevity, better performance and healthier relationships. Tune into happiness We live in a society that sensationalises unhappy events because it sells. So make the choice to focus on the positive things in your life that uplift you, include the books, movies, websites and even the friends you spend time with. 14

7 8 9 10

Live in the present We spend 47 per cent of our waking hours thinking about something other than what we are doing. We’re either regretting something we did yesterday or we’re worrying about something we might do tomorrow. But happiness is in the now. Practise mindfulness when eating a meal, listening to a friend or exercising. Be grateful Gratitude is one of the kings of happiness. It reminds us about what we have, instead of what we don’t have. We recognise our accomplishments, life teachers, supportive family and friends, health and freedom to make choices and to change our life. Nurture your relationships Surveys reveal people with five or more close friends are 60 per cent more likely to be very happy. To maintain our relationships we need to nurture them through regular face-to-face contact where we practise spreading good news, listening and showing compassion. Help others The best way to feel instantly happier is to help someone else. It releases chemicals associated with wellbeing leading to a “helper’s high”. The act of kindness positively affects the helper and the receiver. Also, when you help someone else you are distracted from your own worries and you learn gratitude for your own circumstances.

Nude is the REAL LIFE

new black Do you ever have those dreams where you are out in public and suddenly realise you’re naked?

ell, imagine if you actually signed up to do so! This is the case for many women who are flocking to nude yoga classes, taught by relationship coach Rosie Rees. Not only does she teach classes in her own home town of Perth but this month, she’s touring the country. Rosie grew up in rural Queensland, studied journalism and eloped to London before coming back to Sydney where she landed a role in corporate finance recruitment. Only three years later, she says the corporate environment had become soul-destroying. “I had grown an unhealthy addiction to alcohol and cigarettes, and had started to gain weight from being so stressed out. I knew something had to change. So while running in the Sydney rat-race, I began practicing yoga,” Rosie says. In 2012, Rosie was finally ready to leave her job and made the radical decision to move to India where she did Hatha yoga training and transformed her body, diet and lifestyle. “This was the year that I ended a toxic relationship, walked on fire during a Tony Robbins seminar, discovered the art of yoga, quit my job, packed up my life and moved to India where I quit alcohol, cigarettes and meat - and completely changed my whole life.” she says. Fast forward to today and Rosie now teaches people how to live the life they want and deserve as a relationship coach. This career choice was fuelled by an unhealthy relationship she knew had to end and describes it as the most invigorating and terrifying experience of her life. “As a coach, I am deeply passionate about unlocking my client’s potential, unblocking their obstacles and helping them reshape their blueprint to create the life and relationship they desire. My aim is for my clients to feel empowered, liberated and loved up on their own juices,” she says. Not only is Rosie teaching women to unlock their own femininity, but she is walking the walk in her signature nude yoga classes. “In 2014 I started teaching Sexy Yoga and Breathe & Restore for women, so naturally nude yoga was next on my list,” she says. “I would often practice yoga naked outside with the sun on my skin, the wind in my hair and the earth beneath my feet, and it felt incredibly euphoric and freeing.” Rosie now teaches women all over the country to step out of their comfort zone, honour their physical body and experience a sense of self-love and adoration. With benefits including feeling softer, calm, relaxed, empowered, liberated, sensual, invigorated and beautiful, Rosie urges women to give it a go. For class dates and times, visit rosierees.com

FASHION

with Elizabeth McMahon

Lady in Lace Book a personal after style session with Queensland Season season celebrity stylist Elizabeth McMahon... lace continues to be favoured by designers, featuring in catwalks across New York, . Paris and Milan. Lace actually originated in the 16th Century and has always been an essential in my wardrobe. I would ditch my LBD for an elegant Alex Perry lace dress any day! Lace is the hottest trend right now and a white crochet lace summer dress is the must-have piece for your wardrobe this season. It’s so romantic and perfect for a summer picnic or paired with Jeffery Campbell boots for a tough glamour look you’d see Rihanna wearing. Designers have done a 180-turn to transform lace from bridal gowns to street style. While lace and organza silk still work beautifully together, lace has become edgier and “street smart” as it’s combined with other textures such as leather or cotton. We have seen designers, including Gucci and Saint Laurent, focus on a ’70s style with fringed skirts, tulle trains and ruffled tops, and even corsets by Dolce and Gabbana. Here at home, we’ve seen David Jones showcase white crocheted garments instead of lace on the catwalk, with designers using black and white themes. From cocktail dresses to nightwear, lace is romantic. It’s feminine and ladylike, but it also depends on how you wear it. Your makeup plays a big role in how you will look when wearing a lace garment. Some women opt for the bold old-Hollywood-style makeup, which will give you a glamorous and sexy look. If you wear neutral makeup, then it will give you more of a feminine and sophisticated look: Think Princess Kate. On my left we have inspiration from local and interstate designers. On the Gold Coast, lace is prominent with SJ Lingerie (one of our favourites for underwear garments). For that special day of your life, check out local designer Kate Gee, who’s based in Main Beach. She uses lace and organza on most of her gowns. For quality and sexy shoes, you can’t go past Maryon’s in Main Beach. For more updates on spring fashion and personal styling, contact Elizabeth McMahon at fashion@elisasi.com or 0410 706 374. Start the New Year looking stylish, younger and confident.

Are you expired in every way?

HAIR FLAIR with Amanda Higl

Do you and your bathroom cupboard need a good spring clean? Let’s start with the cupboard and work our way around to your look YOUR BEAUTY CUPBOARD Some of us have a small basic day-today make-up kit, which means you use your products and replace them. However, there are many women who have a huge bag of goodies that are mostly expired. If that’s you, then it’s time for a spring clean. The general rules of thumb when spring cleaning your products are: Cream-based products: 12-18 months Powder-based products: 2 years Lipsticks: 18 months-2 years Gloss: 6 months Foundation: 12-18 months Mascara: 3 months Hair products do not have an external shelf life, however, their internal ingredients

do expire over time. Once you have opened your mane-taming tube you are safe for around three years. Like anything, though, once exposed to open air a product’s ability to perform can be slightly reduced. Depending on its overall texture, it can become less than useable. YOUR LOOK Makeup: Spring always brings with it light glowing looks; and this season less is definitely more. Extremely soft smoky eyes and tones of peach and rose are subdued and pretty. You will still see the odd flash of a red lip, but for a spring pop of colour opt for pink or coral. The 2015 makeup trend is strobing. Where we were seeing the use of highlighters, now the catwalks are really going for glow. For a more day-to-day look

Do you suffer from unsightly leg veins? r Aaron Atia explains the simple treatment options to great legs so you don’t need to hide them away this summer. What causes leg veins? Unsightly leg veins are often genetic or job related, for example, walking or working on concrete floors with low-absorbent footwear or long-standing occupations such as hairdressers and nurses. What can Gold Coasters do about it? In a 30-minute consultation with an experienced phlebologist (vein specialist), Dr Atia will assess your condition and recommend the best treatment options, which range from injections, surgical removal (stripping) and laser. We recommend one leg at a time. Is there any down time for the procedure? Due to new techniques there is no down time and you can resume normal activities immediately. However, after all vein treatments stockings will need to be worn for a period ranging from three days to two weeks. How much does it cost? The average treatment prices are from $450-$1200. Our patients often say they are sorry they did not get it done sooner and they are so happy they don’t need to worry about hiding their legs away any more, especially in summer. For more information about leg veins or other cosmetic treatment options, book a no-obligation consultation at Alive Clinics at Stockland Burleigh. P 5535 5170

ensure you are softly highlighted. Highlight cheekbones, bridge of nose (unless you have a prominent bridge), brow bone and cupids bow of top of your lip. Hair: Effortless is the look for hair this spring, with soft sultry waves, braids and the opposite look sleek ponytails. Do away with the complicated and bloom with simplicity.

SUCCESS

backup plan

Lose the

If you have a dream you want to see come to life, it’s time to take small steps towards it, writes author Lisa N Edwards o you have a dream, but you just never have the time for it? Your life is busy, you are stuck in 9-to-5 mentality, which nowadays starts from the moment you wake up and usually does not end until late at night. Where do you find an hour, a minute, a second just for you, for your dreams and goals? Everyone has the same amount of time in their day, but it is how you use it that makes the difference, says author of Can’t Fight Fate Lisa N Edwards. GET RID OF THE “JUST INS” The “just ins” will only consume your time. I don’t mean Justin like Justin Bieber or Timberlake, I mean the backup plan that stops you giving everything to your dream. The “just in” case something happens, I have plan B to fall back on to. Wrong! Plan B will become your safety net. If you do not give everything to your dream to get where you want to go, you’ll probably never get there. BE OPEN TO CHANGE Everyone’s path is different; this is mine. I am a mother of five children, married and at one stage not so long ago, I managed my own talent agency. It consumed my life and didn’t make me happy. The people were mostly amazing, but the work was routine. While it was an exciting adventure at first, it became “every day” very quickly with volumes of paperwork. Buying the business was my “just in”. But I wasn’t happy so I made the decision to change my life. Not overnight, not even in a week; I didn’t actually have a time frame. But I didn’t want to live thinking ... What if? LEAVE YOUR COMFORT ZONE For my own sanity and personal happiness, after 10 years at the helm I put September 2015

the business on the market. My husband and I were on rocky ground. He didn’t have the same vision that I had. He felt secure in his comfort zone, knowing my half of the bills were paid. Life was relatively easy. But I had big dreams. I was dying inside and my dreams felt like they were slipping away; like I could never achieve them. I pushed forward with what would be the most traumatic five years of my life. ONE STEP AT A TIME After the sale of my business, I paid out most of our smaller debts, leaving mortgage and car loans. I was lucky, I had one year of money to make this work. I had no clear plan, just the image of the where I wanted to be and the end result. For six months, I felt like a fish out of water. I didn’t factor in that to reach my end dream was expensive. Then I received an email unexpectedly, with dates for a reading from psychic medium Lisa Williams. I had been on her waiting list for almost 18 months. She gave me a piece of advice, one that I had forgotten... Don’t forget to look out the window. For me this meant focusing on the present moment. BUILD A SUPPORT TEAM This doesn’t need to be huge; it can be just one person who believes in you and makes you feel like you could do anything. The 12-month mark was quickly approaching and the money was running out; I was going to have to find a job. Not wanting to go back to the stress of me being unhappy, my husband threw me a lifeline and we remortgaged our house. You can live your dreams, I am living proof and if I can do it, so can you. Just take the first step; break up with “just in”. Don’t let your dreams just be dreams. 30

Spring clean your health This spring let’s make an effort to clear out all old habits to make way for new healthier ones pring is a time when we choose to spring clean our house. We throw out all the old and worn items that have long cluttered our garages and spare rooms to make way for new and improved items. Yet many of us don’t think to also spring clean our health at this time of year too. So where do you start in spring cleaning your health? Here are five tips to giving your health a good overhaul. Tip # 1: Spring clean your habits Look at patterns of behaviour you have created in your lifestyle that are no longer serving your health well. This may be having too much wine at the end of the day to unwind or not going for a walk in the mornings because you were up late watching TV or doing emails. Examine three habits that you would like to change this spring and work on those first. Tip # 2: Spring clean your attitudes Oftentimes we have developed a negative attitude towards beneficial habits such as doing exercise or drinking more water. These become a frame of mind that prevents us from changing. Work on addressing negative attitudes by substituting a negative thought

with a positive one.For example, start practicing saying to yourself, “I love drinking water, it is so refreshing” or “My body loves to exercise, it makes me feel so great.” By repetition this will become a subconscious thought and with any luck will move you towards adopting new positive behaviours. Tip # 3: Spring clean your influences Start spending time with people who value their health. If drinking and work are the main priorities for your friends and colleagues then do not spend too much time with these people. As the saying goes, “birds of a feather flock together”. Find healthy influencers who can help to keep you motivated by exampling positive health behaviours. Tip # 4: Spring clean your environment Decluttering can be so good for the mind!

Decluttering your pantry can also be good for your health. Remove temptation by keeping less healthy snacks out of the house. HEALTH

with Stephen Eddey

Boost your energy Nutritionist and naturopath Stephen Eddey tells us how to stay healthy all year Pantry overhaul Although we should aim to keep ourselves healthy all year round, many of us do feel sluggish coming into spring due to spending more time indoors and seeing less sunshine. As a result, winter can be a time where people stock up on comfort foods. So as you start to think about rejuvenating yourself for spring, put down the Tim Tams and pick up the healthy seasonal foods. Consider starting a healthy recipe scrapbook or an online food plan might work for you. Eat seasonal Aim to eat fruits and vegetables that are in season. Not only should they be more affordable as they haven’t had to be imported, but in general they should also be more nutrient dense. When planning your meals try to include as many colours into each one as possible as generally different coloured fruits and vegetables have different micronutrients. You should aim for five servings of vegetables and 1-2 of fruit a day. Energy Coming into spring, spend more time outdoors to get some vitamin D, boosting your exercise regime should also help boost your energy levels. “I would also suggest supplementing with powerful antioxidant ubiquinol, which is responsible for our energy. It is found naturally in our bodies and is present in all living cells. Its role is to extract energy from food and assist in powering the body’s overall energy levels as well as supporting heart health,” says Stephen, the Principal of Health Schools Australia. Spring clean your mind As the term “spring clean” suggests, spring is a time where people tend to re-evaluate aspects of their lives such as doing an in-depth clean of their house or changing their diet and exercise regime. Another spring clean to consider is your mindset. Start pepping yourself up to get excited about spending more time outdoors and setting new goals, whether they are health and wellness goals, financial goals or work goals. Hay fever remedies As exciting as spring time is, it is also the time of the dreaded hay fever. Stephen’s tips in the fight against hay fever are: - Wash your hair regularly. If you are out and about walking beneath trees and near bushes, you may get pollen in your hair that can contribute to hay fever.

- Dust and vacuum your home regularly, particularly if your windows are near bushes or trees. - Consider taking a probiotic. Several studies have shown they may take some of the misery out of seasonal allergies. Exercise: Try something new Stop beating yourself up about putting on a few kilos over winter. Try something new such as reformer Pilates, a circuittraining class or aerial yoga. Doing something different can be fun and means your new spring exercise regime won’t be a chore. Go shopping There is nothing like new gym gear or a new summer outfit to get you motivated to kick start your spring fitness goals. Another strategy to motivate you is to try on some of your favourite items from last spring/summer wardrobe and see how they fit. You can try it on once a month to keep yourself on track. That way you won’t have to stress about it in spring.

WOMEN Of THE MONTH

Ladies, all the

ladies

Welcome to Get it magazine’s Women of the Month – where we shine a light on and celebrate our Gold Coast women Athena Notaras Managing director and owner, ACT Nuts & Bolts

Cassandra Pullos Accredited Family Law Specialist and director, Cassandra Pullos Lawyers

What does your role entail? The day-to-day running of the business. I find that keeping a finger on the pulse is the best way to give great customer service. What has been your biggest achievement? I opened the business at 21 when it was a totally male-dominated industry. We have survived the GFC and are now going from strength to strength. Why do you love what you do? I love helping customers by providing products that other outlets don’t have and by helping them achieve their objectives by delivering their goods on time. How do you define success? As a woman – financial independence. What do you do in your down time? Go out with my husband in our boat on the Broadwater. Favourite inspirational quote? Lead, follow or get out of my way!

What does your role entail? We provide legal services to clients who are going through a relationship breakdown, considering entering into a relationship and wanting a pre-nuptial agreement, resolve financial restructuring, help work out what are the best interests of their children and make arrangements for their future. Plus the day-to-day running of my small business. What has been your biggest achievement? I don’t tend to measure achievements. Life in all its rich diversity is a journey. There is much more I want to achieve and my focus is on the potential future achievements. But perhaps I should take more time to savour those achievements, at least in the moment of reaching them. How do you define success? Enjoying the journey, having no regrets, having the wisdom to know when I haven’t been the best I can be and the courage to rectify that. What do you do in your downtime? Time away from work can be as varied as tending my veggie garden and looking after my chickens, to crewing a catamaran across the Coral Sea from Vanuatu to Bundaberg in seven days of wild weather and sea sickness. Favourite inspirational quote “Make sure you live the life you have rather than the life you thought you would have. Life is not a dress rehearsal, enjoy the journey and be present in every moment of it. Do it once, do it well.”

Linking the Coast to a world of excitement The team is waiting to welcome you to Links Golf Club at Hope Island he weather is starting to warm up and spring is the time Gold Coasters come alive, so it’s little wonder Links Hope Island is a popular choice for the discerning diner looking for a unique venue. Think expansive views over the aquatic driving range, lush gardens and a Mediterranean architectural influence contribute to a setting of opulence. Links continues to break down the perception of a private members’ club and is open to visitors daily. Having recently transitioned from an exclusive, equity, sharebased membership, the doors to this once private domain are now open and its staff are ready to welcome locals. Whether it be for golf, dining or at one of the many vibrant events the club has scheduled on its busy social calendar. September The casually elegant Links Restaurant offers breakfast and lunch daily, and has just released a spring dining special featuring fresh Mooloolaba prawns. Diners can choose from three delicious prawn dishes and accompany your lunch with an expertly matched glass of wine for $25 a person. October Meanwhile, as part of Breast Cancer

Awareness Month, in October, Links will be hosting a cinema under the stars. Girls Night In is a great excuse to gather your girlfriends, family and settle in for some fun. Popular romantic comedy, The Proposal, featuring Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds, will be screened in the tropical gardens on Friday, October 9. Included in the ticket is a pink cocktail, street food and $5 donation to the National Breast Cancer Foundation. Gates open at 5pm and the screening is at 7pm. November With Melbourne Cup around the corner, Links has the ultimate Cup 35

celebration planned and is sure to be a winner. Champagne and wine will be flowing, a selection of substantial canapes (including freshly shucked oysters), fashion parade, prizes for best hat and finest dressed and sweeps all in the elegant setting of the club’s enchanting gardens. You won’t miss a second of the action with the jumbo screen. Ladies will be swooned and served by the handsome gentleman of Butlers in the Buff. So dress up, kick up your heels and get ready for a glamorous Melbourne Cup party. P 5530 9000 or linkshopeisland.com.au September 2015

aking a shortlist of the top must-visit destinations in the world is no easy task, but we’ve narrowed it down to a few of our favourites. Between natural beauty, cultural importance and historical interest, not to mention personal preference, for many of us, narrowing a to-do holiday list even down to your top 20 would be difficult. But here is our list of just nine of the top must-see places to visit in Australia and abroad. The list could easily be a lot longer, but these locations and experiences are among those trips you simply must take at some point in your life. AT HOME 1. Far North Queensland Cairns is the gateway to the delights of Far North Queensland, which is rich in natural beauty as well as native culture. TO DO: The list of things to do here is wide and varied: Dive or snorkel on the stunning Great Barrier Reef; explore the national parks of the Atherton Tableland; become one with nature in the Daintree Rainforest; safari in the Gulf of Savannah; or simply relax at one of the many tropical island resorts. 2. Uluru, Northern Territory Everyone should, at least once, experience the other-worldly vistas of Australia’s red centre and the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Like nowhere else you have ever seen, there really is an ancient and spiritual atmosphere at this place of red dirt and stark majestic beauty. TO DO: Based from the beautiful Ayers Rock Resort, the list of things to do is enormous: Walk the base of Uluru; take a guided Mala Walk to Kantju Gorge; hike in Kata Tjuta; dine in the

trips you must take in your lifetime desert under the stars or take a scenic flight or camel tour. 3. Monkey Mia and swimming with whale sharks, Western Australia Western Australia is best known for its south (Perth, Rottnest Island and Margaret River region) and north (Broome and The Kimberley). But don’t forget the mid coast. TO DO: The mid-WA coast, however, while remote, has some of the most unique experiences to enjoy: Swimming with the whale sharks at Exmouth and interacting with the famous dolphins at Monkey Mia Resort. The whale sharks of World Heritage Listed Ningaloo Reef are the world’s largest fish and are gentle giants. Schools of dolphins swim to shore at Monkey Mia daily to be hand fed of their own accord. These experiences will leave you speechless. 4. The Great Ocean Road, Victoria One of the world’s most beautiful coastline roads, the Great Ocean Road stretches almost 250km between Torquay and Allansford in Victoria. TO DO: The whole trip. It winds through changing terrain and offers vistas of the Twelve Apostles, the Shipwreck Coast, easy access to beaches, quaint coastal towns and many other attractions. 5. The Tasmanian wilderness One of only three temperate wilderness areas remaining in the southern hemisphere, Tasmania’s wilderness is renowned for its beauty as well as its flora and fauna. Some of the world’s oldest trees are found here. TO DO: Visit Cradle Mountain, the Walls of Jerusalem National Park, Bruny Island, Wineglass Bay and the remote West Coast of Tasmania. The air here is the freshest and 36

most invigorating you will breathe in all of Australia. ABROAD There are so many places to see in the world and a bucket list is generally very long. Why not start locally and then branch out to see these beauties. 6. Great Wall of China One of the greatest sights in the world, the Great Wall of China offers so much in culture and history. It is the longest wall in the world and is an intriguing achievement of ancient architecture. One of the seven wonders of the world, it was built more than 2000 years ago. TO DO: Discover the history of the wall and go on a tour. You can go paragliding, hiking or do the Great Wall marathon. You can also go on a cable car ride. 7. African safari While Africa has a lot to offer (hello pyramids), there is also a safari for you. This is one of the ultimate bucket-list adventures. TO DO: Find family-friendly holidays, go on a romantic honeymoon, or take a luxurious African safari complete with candle lit dinner and glamping. 8. Route 66, US Undoubtedly this will be one of the best holidays you ever have, Route 66 – which runs between LA and Chicago - has become a wellknown symbol in music and movies, and represents the great American road trip. Simply hire a car or motorhome and start cruising. A top holiday for families, friends or even if you’re travelling solo. TO DO: The Cadillac Ranch and plenty of museums can be found along this route, plus the Painted Desert, Chain of Rocks Bridge, Route 66 Shoe Tree, drive-ins and diners, and Santa Monica Pier is at the end of the trail.

Boating basics BOATING

etting out on the water is a great tonic for your health and a fantastic family pastime. Not only are you far from the daily grind, immersed in nature with sea air in your lungs, you are also away from the many devices that devour our time and trap us indoors. Boating in all its forms is becoming more accessible, whether you buy, lease, charter or enter as part of a syndicate. But many people baulk at boating because of the tricky terms, perceived complexity of owning and running a boat, all the gear and gadgets. Boat broker, Ian Swan of Swan Super Lines states you needn’t be intimidated by the jargon or think you have to grow up on boats to enjoy boating.“Yes, there are rules and certain ways of doing things on the water, but they are clear, simple to learn and they make a day or a weekend on the water that much more enjoyable for everybody.” Self-control, along with boat control, is perhaps the most important fundamental.“The SSL philosophy is when you’re on a boat control is one of the basics. No running, no jumping, no yelling, take your time, don’t rush, make sure you’re able to adjust and be flexible. Know the navigation marks, stay sober, just like on the road.” Traffic lights and signs guide drivers on the roads. Buoys, beacons and navigation lights do the same on the water. Lateral marks show the port (left) and starboard (right) sides of navigable waters or channels. A port mark is red with a can-like shape and displays a red flashing light at night (when lit). A starboard mark is green with a cone-like shape and displays a green flashing light at night (when lit). Cardinal marks show where the deepest and safest water is by using a compass. Cardinal marks have black and yellow bands with black double cones on top showing the different compass directions. They can mark where to find the deepest water in an area, the safest side to pass a danger, a feature in a channel (for example, a bend, junction or the end of a shoal). Special marks show a special area or feature. For example, to show that a channel divides or to mark cables or pipelines. Special marks are yellow and sometimes have a yellow X as the top mark. Safe water marks, which have red and white vertical stripes with a single red sphere as the top mark, show that there is navigable water all around the mark, including fairway, mid-channel or landfall marks. It’s not all about signals and rules, some boating basics are common

sense. “For instance,” says Ian. “When you step off your boat, make sure you take a line with you, loop off at the marina then back to boat so you can singlehandedly set off while you’re on board.” Knowing the rules and acquiring the “sea sense” are all about feeling competent day and night to take to the water. If you’re keen to boost your skills and local knowledge, Ian Swan runs a Master Your Boat program for newcomers and seasoned boat owners to brush up. “We developed our program through observing that people purchased a boat, then didn’t get enough use out of it due to lack of confidence, which stemmed from lack of knowledge. “In the Master Your Boat training, we show them how their boat operates, the best way it works for them, where to get the best priced fuel, how to use the pump out station, where the marks are coming in and out of the Seaway, how to cross the bar, how to anchor and how to read and assess the local channel marks. Plus we show them popular moorings and some hidden gems, like where to get the best mud crabs!” www.swansuperlines.com

What is paleo anyway?

ith the weather getting warmer on the Gold Coast and the distinct feeling that it’s going to be a hot summer, hiding behind lots of clothes is not a great option. Gold Coasters are looking at how to spring clean their bodies and get into shape for summer – and the most popular idea at the moment is “going paleo”. With so much info about how, what and why … here is a little clarity. 1. A paleo diet is not about what caveman ate Loren Cordain popularised the diet with his research into what our ancestors ate (or, more importantly, didn’t eat) and since then people have been confused as to what eating paleo is all about. There is no one diet that our ancestors ate and we are only taking educated guesses at what they consumed. The truth is, we don’t know for certain what a caveman ate, but we do know there are a few things many of us consume today that have only been introduced into our diets recently. 2. A paleo diet is restrictive and you have to give up all the food you love How paleo you go is up to you. Chris Kresser does a fantastic job of this in his book Your Personal Paleo Diet. A paleo diet consists of mainly vegetables, some naturally fed animal protein, some fat and a little fruit. If you choose to include other foods in there, even the so-called “bad foods” like grains, legumes, vegetable oils, sugar and dairy, that is up to you. The truth is that everyone handles these foods differently. Some people take wheat out of their diet for 30 days and feel amazing, others don’t really notice a difference. 3. Paleo is not a weight-loss diet Many people lose weight on a paleo diet. The main reason is because they reduce the amount of sugar and low-quality carbs they consume, but don’t mistake it for a weight-loss program. Paleo is designed to reduce inflammation and be best for your health, but

Lose weight and get active this spring Become a thinner, fitter version of you with Vision’s 9 Week Weight Loss Challenge. Hurry, register before 31 August 2015.

you can still have too much of a good thing. Quite often people eat low carb on a paleo diet, but that may not be the best thing for you. Paleo isn’t necessarily low carb, but is definitely isn’t a high-carb diet. If you want to lose weight eating the right macronutrient makeup specifically for you is a much smarter short and long-term strategy. 4. The paleo diet is not all about eating meat Sure, eating meat is in the paleo diet and you could argue that we owe our large brains to the consumption of meat and meat fat. Pete Evans did a great job of describing this in an interview where he explained paleo was mainly vegetables, a palm-sized piece of naturally raised meat (grass-fed beef, free-range chicken and so on) and some natural fats, like avocado and nuts. So what do you do? If you are really curious and/or you have some kind of autoimmune disease or inflammation like irritable bowel syndrome, Hashimotos, Crohn’s Disease or just a suspected wheat intolerance you may get some benefit out of trying it. Is paleo for everyone … I don’t think so. Why not do some research and get the whole picture (not just that from paleo bloggers, try Wheat Belly and Grain Brain for a more science-based approach) and you may find somewhere in the middle is the right fit for you and your family to live a healthy, happy, long life. Check out Nom Nom Paleo on Instagram and for the best Paleo food on the Gold Coast head over to Caffe Republic, Bronberg Plaza, (next to Flannery’s) Slatyer Ave, Southport. I arrived at the French Lantern Café for dinner, walking past the flourishing herb garden at the entrance, which is used to partner the fresh ingredients for all aspects of the menu. I introduced myself and my partner to owner Karen Matthews, who mentioned the style of her restaurant reflects the diverse food and culture she enjoyed on her travels through Europe. New head chef Nathan Hervey has adapted the recently revamped menu to include a few Italian dishes that contrast the already-established French dishes quite well. For entrée we ordered the Pain a Lail ($8.90) and the twice-baked cheese soufflé ($9.90). The bread (Pain) arrived and looked inviting. The freshly baked baguette was smothered with garlic butter, mozzarella cheese and just a hint of parmesan. The cheese was melted under the grill and was delightfully gooey and stringy. Just the way it should be; a great way to start off the meal. The soufflé is a must at any Frenchinspired restaurant. Our soufflé was slightly heavy, but that goes with the territory when cheese is the main component. The seasoning was spot on and my partner and I both commented on how we could easily go another. For mains we decided to share the veal saltimbocca ($25.90) and the fettuccini

pollo ($21.90). The veal arrived and was served with seasonal vegetables sautéed with butter and turned potato, and drizzled with masala sauce. The dish was delicious. The veal had been sealed well so as not to dry out and allowed to simmer in the sweet masala. The sauce was the perfect coating consistency and didn’t interfere with the delicate flavour of the meat. I must admit I consumed the majority of the dish as I enjoyed it so much. The pasta was also well constructed. The creamy sauce was not too heavy and the white wine in the sauce was present but not overpowering. The pasta itself was cooked al dente and seasoning again was spot on. The dessert offerings of the day were posted on the chalkboard and included a sticky date pudding with vanilla bean ice cream. It had to be ordered. When it arrived, the pudding was light and fluffy,

41

and smothered in the date infused caramel sauce. It would have been worth the drive alone just for that dessert! Other desserts made in-house include the Tarte au Citron and the fruit-filled Clafouti. Specials change regularly and with the seasons. Another popular choice is the French Lantern Café High Tea. For $49 you can enjoy homemade scones, cakes, savouries and an array of ribbon sandwiches. A selection of high-quality teas and Merlo coffee are included in the price. Bookings are essential. Breakfast is a favourite with locals and the breakfast menu has all the usual inclusions. The prices are more than reasonable and $16.90 for a jumbo breakfast is great value. The menu board houses the daily specials and with summer fast approaching the back deck is the place to relax with an early morning meal. The French Lantern is an enjoyable place to dine. The food is comforting and the portions are generous. Seating is ample with space for up to 110 guests, including the intimate dinner dining area. The deck, with beautiful views of the river, will be opened as the weather warms up. Functions can be accommodated with the café already hosting several successful baby showers and specialty events. The French Lantern is open seven days a week, with breakfast starting at 7am daily. Wednesday to Sunday the kitchen remains open until 9pm. For more information and reservations call 5530 1328. LISA’S LUNCHBOX MUESLI BARS INGREDIENTS • 120g honey • 60g coconut oil (could replace with butter) • 2 tbsp coconut sugar (could use rapadura sugar) • 1 tsp vanilla bean paste (or vanilla extract) • 250g oats • 50g desiccated coconut • 60g pepitas • 60g sunflower seeds • 2 tsp cinnamon • 1 tbsp chia seeds • 60g chopped dates • 60g chopped dried apricots • 1 egg to help hold it together better (optional) METHOD: Line a baking tray with baking paper and preheat oven to 150 degrees. Add all dry ingredients to a bowl or blender and combine. Over a low heat, melt the sugar, honey, vanilla and coconut oil together. Once the sugar has dissolved add the mixture to the dry ingredients. If you’re using a blender, then whizz it until it all comes together. If using a bowl mix it up really well until totally combined. Put mixture into baking tray and flatten to about 1-2cms (the thinner it is the crunchier it will be). Place in oven for 30 minutes or until browned all over. Cut into squares or rectangles.

Beer for good health

GET DRINKING

es, you just read that correctly…beer for good health. Our faithful friend is undergoing a makeover and getting in touch with its more healthy side. With the onset of spring and bikini bodies that will hit our beaches soon, beer is getting in on the action to get a makeover. After all, what goes hand in hand with hot weather after a day at the beach? A beer. But it doesn’t really go so well with our bikini body. Beer gets the blame for so many of your health concerns, and yes, sometimes, it is warranted. And while many have tried to make it a healthier drop – without killing the taste – not many have succeeded. Until now. New research out of Griffith University shows it is possible to improve the hydrating effects of beer without killing off its taste. Associate Professor Ben Desbrow, from Griffith’s Menzies Health Institute

Queensland, has now extended his study of beer to see how it can be further manipulated to improve its rehydration potential. The way the research was conducted would have most men (and women) struck down by the curse of the green-eyed monster. Tests entailed 12 men drinking beers of varying strengths following a controlled exercise-induced weight-loss activity. The study found a large concentration of electrolytes added to beer further enhanced a person’s fluid retention following lowalcohol beer consumption. Additionally, the study found the rehydration potential of mid-strength beer was also affected by electrolyte enrichment. Now the Associate Professor wants to further understand beer drinkers’ motivations using an online questionnaire. “We know a large number of people enjoy beer and given that it is a plant-based beverage, there is definitely room to improve beer’s health profile,” he says.

H Virgo August 23 - September 22 Events around September 12 can encourage a bold move or new direction. However, it’s more than just a new beginning. It could be the start of something very substantive, which can require you to take a true leap of faith. From September 25 you will notice extra vitality and the willpower to overcome niggling obstacles. H Libra September 22 – October 23 September 6 will bring an end to confusion or frustration around certain relationships. From this point on you’ll have a clearer picture of how best to proceed. From September 23, you will be encouraged to prioritise your goals and get meaningful projects moving forwards. H Scorpio October 23 – November 22 A friendly focus on your social sector can coincide with a few changes in terms of interests and links to others. You may gravitate towards new friends or a club that provides fresh experiences and expands your horizons in the process. However, from September 28, you should pace yourself around both work and play. H Sagittarius November 22 – December 22 You’ll get a boost this month as key influences encourage you to be bold, to take on challenges and strive to reach your goals and ambitions. September 12 can coincide with an opportunity that, while proving to be a bit of a stretch, could be one that catapults you into new territory. Your social scene looks to sparkle more from September 23.

H Capricorn December 22 – January 20 The cosmos encourages you to expand your horizons and be adventurous. Whether this means taking a trip, studying or perhaps learning from a coach or mentor, you’ll do well if you take up the challenge. September 28 encourages you to harmonise your worklife balance. A few tweaks can make a major difference, Capricorn.

H Taurus April 20 – May 21 Frustrations concerning relationships and everyday interactions ease as from September 6, bringing a greater chance of harmony and a fresh start. September 12 will encourage you to make combining fun and relaxation a regular habit, especially if you’ve neglected any of life’s pleasures more recently.

H Aquarius January 21 – February 19 There’s a chance of a breakthrough in your finances from September 12 because of a positive new location and influence in your sector of long-term resources. Also fresh approaches are being encouraged. All of this could lead to a potentially lucrative future. However, do take extra care regarding the small print or details of anything key.

H Gemini May 21 – June 21 Home and family affairs can get a big boost this month, with September 12 encouraging potentially radical decisions. If you’ve been considering a move or planning on expanding your property then the chances are it can be all systems go. However, beware, mid-month encourages caution in your dealings with certain individuals.

H Pisces February 19 – March 20 Interactions could be potentially lifechanging, as an offer or conversation can open exciting new doors for you. You’ll find others to be a motivating force in your life, pushing you to try things you might not have otherwise considered. Connections to others can take on something of a fated quality as the month winds down, especially romantically.

H Cancer June 21 – July 22 Suffered financial delays? Money matters can begin to speed up from September 6, plus you’ll likely spot a better deal on big-ticket items you’re keen to purchase. Meanwhile, everyday communications get a boost and this can bring new friends your way and, with a little good fortune, one or two lucrative opportunities as well.

H Aries March 20 – April 19 You’ll be keen to knuckle down and get on with any plans or projects you’ve set yourself. If you’re not happy with the job you’re doing, you may be motivated to search for something more interesting. September is also a month when finances look set to improve, boosted by an upturn in your selfconfidence and your personal abilities.

H LEO July 22 – August 23 This month encourages transformation and it starts with assessing your current situation and realising that you may need to alter your relationship to longstanding issues. Take a look at your talents too, as by showcasing them dazzling new opportunities can show up. You’ll need to move out of your comfort zone though to make true progress, Leo.

Spring clean SPICE with Sophie Wood

the bedroom (and your sex life) Sex and relationship expert Annabelle Knight shares her answers to some of your questions

ou don’t have to leave spring cleaning for your house and wardrobe, why not spring clean your bed, relationships and sex life? Q: My partner and I have been together for three years and our bedroom antics have become a bit boring, how can we spice things up without going too OTT? A: I get this question so much and I love that each time I can answer it with something different. I’d recommend treating yourself and him to some new underwear. A saucy shopping trip together can be a huge turn on and really build the anticipation. It will give him a sense of involvement men don’t usually get. With the change of the season why not opt for some flirty florals to get his pulse racing? Bright colours lift the complexion and it’s widely thought that reds and purples are the sexiest colours. Q: I’m single and happily in a relationship with my vibrator. However, even it has become a bit boring - what’s wrong with me? A: Absolutely nothing! As with most things in life, variety is the key. Regular use of any sex toy will result in a desensitisation to it. You’ve just become used to its size, shape and power level. What was once a huge turn on will suddenly seem a bit dull. Clear out all of the old toys that just don’t do it for you any more and invest in some new bed-time treats. Choose something you wouldn’t normally go for, perhaps a glass toy? They’re great for temperature play and their rigid nature makes them perfect for achieving that elusive G-spot orgasm.

A: How I wish it was that simple. The best advice I can give is to be open to try new things and to put yourself out there. As humans we thrive on physical and eye contact. Looking someone in the eye and touching them, even just a brief brush, creates a rush of the feelgood chemical serotonin. This is what gives us that lovely “butterfly” feeling we get when we like someone. Online dating doesn’t give us this, which explains why this dating strategy fails so often. Get involved with your community, attend events and be more present within the world. The more people you meet the higher the chances of you meeting someone meaningful.

Q: I’m a “single and looking for love” woman, so I was wondering if you had any tips on how to find “the one” in today’s modern world?

let us show you all the tricks to spice up your love life and make it a sexy one!

LAST WORD

with Sarah Blinco

e’re coming into a period when it’s reasonable to assume quite a few of us will start to plan for location, work or study changes we want to implement in 2016. I think this is all very exciting because there really are so many excellent possibilities at our fingertips, and I’m here to insist you (no matter what your situation) don’t let it slip through. How to avoid losing grip? Open your mind, get educated on your options and take personal responsibility for seeking advice and information in a variety of places. Most of us (parents, educators and Gold Coasters going about our everyday business) do not have full awareness of what’s on offer in terms of ways to change tack. That’s not a fault, but it is a fact. While we all know our individual jobs, and particularly those in teaching or mentoring roles understand how to manage curriculums, behaviour, personality types and so on, it’s becoming increasingly evident that technology is evolving faster than is our grasp on the potential that’s open to students, mature-age graduates and change-seekers alike. I attended an interesting forum recently, produced by a multinational media company that has a goal of inspiring more women to move into technology and creative careers. At this event, influential speakers, entrepreneurs and trend-watchers discussed the significant industries of the future, and what the most in-demand jobs will be (coding is where it’s at, by the way – if you’re curious, take a look at Codecademy’s easy online training). While tech is unsurprisingly the mammoth industry of the coming age, the number of women moving into IT and digital this decade, disappointingly, has fallen. Basically, we need more chicks in tech, but the problem is many advisers do not understand what is on offer (let alone what’s on the horizon) and how to forge a living out of it locally and abroad. Now, more than ever before, we have a chance to pursue our passions, but be aware that this could manifest in a form you’d never considered. A fun example to explore exists in the world of fashion. If you love it, you won’t necessarily end up literally creating garments. But, career options now vastly extend offline and into the digital arena. You can buy, blog, sell, advise on trends, work in publishing, create social media and digital content, direct fashion shoots, produce events, design (clothes or websites), film and photograph. There’s a myriad of both traditional and unconventional ways to weave stylish dreams into a sustainable income. At the aforementioned media, education and tech event, I heard it said repeatedly that no one should let a lack of experience deter September 2015

Getting educat ed

While tech is unsurprisingly the mammoth industry of the coming age, the number of women moving into IT and digital this decade, disappointingly, has fallen

a decision to grow and learn. Employers all insisted that attitude over experience will secure you opportunities at any age. What is it you love doing? Don’t worry so much about the how; focus on the big picture of where you’d like to be, then take baby steps towards it. As a quote-image informed me this morning on Instagram, “Now is a great time to start”. You’ll find once you begin pondering what you want to learn and achieve, you’ll notice things crop up in your world that offer a chance to move another step closer to your big picture. It might be a six-week writing course you discover advertised in the window at the local library; or you spot a free 30-day social media fundamentals for business eCourse promoted on Facebook. Sign up now! Notice what shows up for you and be mindful that counsellors could inadvertently pigeon-hole you into a particular job type or a course. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the contemporary beast we’re dealing with (and this was brought up at the conference too), there is a lack of knowledge, even on the part of many career advisers and educators, about the scope of opportunity available to 50

us nowadays, particularly within dynamic digital, tech and creative roles across all industries. This is why you not only need to do your own networking, plus research on how to move towards desired change and goals, but you’ll probably need to put a bit of trust in your gut instincts too. You could take a positive step towards change today by enrolling in a massive online open course (MOOC), presented by universities from all over the globe – they are free, flexible and you can educate yourself on any topic that takes your fancy – search for FutureLearn, edX, Coursera or iVersity. Or, advance your knowledge without breaking the bank by skill-swapping at nearby co-working or educational spaces. Find someone who is happy to train you in their area of expertise, while you barter talent in another. Opportunity really is waiting for you around the corner. However, it may not be presented in an instantly recognisable form, so be careful you don’t blink and miss it. Get educated on what learning options are available now or imminently – your bespoke world of fulfilment, profit and enjoyment may be just a few mouse-clicks away.
