LETTER FROM

Leanne Publisher

W

elcome to October! The month of fashion, fascinators, fun and of course bubbles. The universe as we know it, has finally opened up and with it comes freedom, choices and well-deserved holidays. How long has it been since we dared to dream of travelling across a border – any border really? It is true when they say – one desires most the things we cannot have. Well people, now we can run wild – in a controlled manner of course.

Melbourne Cup Lunch

The sun is shining, the temperature is ridiculously condusive to ocean swims, beach walks and a sneaky Sav Blanc with as many Covid-free friends that we can gather. Things are certainly looking up. Recently, I was grateful for the opportunity to spend a Saturday at the races – yes… at the races with a small group of around 300 or more friends for a Pink Ribbon Charity event and I can’t tell you how incredible it was to see so many locals dressed to the nines and having a fabulous day.

Tuesday, 3rd November 2020

Style it up at Links Hope Island’s fabulously fashionable Melbourne Cup Lunch! On arrival, sip on a Gordons Lemon Gin & Tonic and settle in for a mouthwatering three course lunch featuring ocean fresh seafood in our Fountain Court.

Our October issue focus is wellbeing, what we need to do to get back into the groove of looking after ourselves and making the most of Queensland as a whole. Our travel focus is on the beautiful Whitsundays. A destination that potentially most of us have visited in the past, but something has changed. These businesses who have endured not only cyclone devastation and a pandemic, are open to welcome all of us back to experience the tranquility and beauty of this pristine part of the world.

You can watch all of the colour of ‘The Cup’ on our jumbo screen, have a flutter on a sweep, participate in fashions on the field, enjoy live entertainment and catch the latest trends in our resortwear fashion parade.

So, in the words of a great man ‘Book it Danno!’ Get out there, enjoy what we have and always look after yourselves and your mates.

Time: 11:30am, 12pm lunch service Includes: Gordons Lemon Gin & Tonic, 3 course lunch, prizes, fashion parade, screening of the race, sweeps available. Price: $95pp, Beverage Package Upgrade - $35 (selected wine, tap beer and soft drinks)

GET IT I PROFILE Since Covid, I have personally never felt more connected to my family and community. I genuinely want to help, be more involved and supportive of our friends and neighbours.

In this together

What are the positives to take out of the current situation? It has made me realise the need to slow down, smell the roses, and take more care of my health and support others.

Your top tips to improve mental health? Exercise minimum 30 minutes per day, sleep at least eight hours, eat healthy and meditate. This will change your life.

What’s your morning routine and how do you relax and remain positive? I aim for eight hours sleep and wake up at 7am, take a cold shower to give me my mind shift, then 15 minutes of meditation and a healthy breakfast of oats and berries with an espresso – yum! I also exercise at the end of the day.

What are you responsible for at work? Strategy and growth of our Mental Awareness Foundation

Best part of your job? Helping others. Nothing is more rewarding than providing a vehicle that enables mums, dads, brothers, sisters and the community to show their support to mental health but also show them ‘you’re not alone’. We are all in this together and here to help.

Tell us something you’re most proud of doing in the past year? Seeking funding to implement a board of directors to help grow the charity.

What are your goals for Mental Health Foundation?

Mental Awareness Foundation

To make Walk for Awareness national – with walks in every Aussie city – and to expand internationally.

Most memorable work moment? In 2019 we broke an attendance record of over 3200 walkers.

What change would you like to see most? Zero suicides and the stigma of mental health broken. I want people to not be judged as ‘soft’ if they wish to take a mental health day.

It’s World Mental Health Awareness Day on 10 October and wellness has never been more top of mind than in 2020. Snezana Dudic chats to the co-founder of Queensland’s Mental Awareness Foundation, Tudor Vasile, who, with his brother Wesley, established an event – Walk For Awareness – after losing two friends to suicide in 2011

“EXERCISE MINIMUM 30 MINUTES PER DAY, SLEEP AT LEAST EIGHT HOURS, EAT HEALTHY AND MEDITATE. THIS WILL CHANGE YOUR LIFE.”

With the impact of Covid-19 there has been much focus on health and wellbeing.Tudor, how do you think we are faring?

For more information about the important work being done by this foundation to raise awareness for mental health and wellbeing, visit mentalawarenessfoundation.org

Australians are realising that exercise and wellness is directly linked to mental health. As devastating as Covid-19 has been, the silver lining is that it has made us more aware of that. I feel that everyone is now taking their health more seriously – whether it’s eating better, exercising, getting outdoors for walks, spending more time with family and loved ones.

GET IT I GET THINKING

An ode to

breasts — By Krysten Davis —

I

t’s breast cancer awareness month this month and I’d like to salute our humble boobies.

They are some of the most versatile, diverse and hardworking parts of our anatomy. Unfortunately everyone seems to have an opinion on them. They’re too big, too small, too high, too low. They are meant to be ‘sisters’ not ‘twins’ but sometimes they don’t even look like they come from the same family! Of course, breasts are meant to be purely functional – but they are so much more than that. I’m actually a little perplexed by the amazing fascination men have for breasts. Don’t get me wrong, breasts are great! But REALLY? The degree of devotion, the inability to look away, the need to touch, not to mention the whiplash caused by an exposed pair of perky bazoonkas!

OPEN 7 DAYS 9:30AM TO 5PM

32 Masthead Way, The Marine Village, Sanctuary Cove Ph 5577 8981

Here is my theory: they are, at heart, just jealous! Women alone have the ability to provide 100% of the nutrition required for a growing baby. There is nothing more satisfying than looking at your chubby, scrumptious, four-month-old baby and thinking ‘I did that!’ We need to rejoice in the lovely, practical reality that is our gorgeous breasts.

Look after them! GET A MAMMOGRAM If you are over 40. Whatever their size and shape, embrace the journey from perky pubescence to more mature melons. If the jealous men in our lives are very lucky, we may even share them. But this is a privilege NOT a right. Any man who dares to criticise their individuality should be abandoned to play with his own vastly inferior nipples.

“WE NEED TO REJOICE IN THE LOVELY, PRACTICAL REALITY THAT IS OUR GORGEOUS BREASTS. LOOK AFTER THEM!”

herself, “’I’m across the other side of the world, I’m not going to pull out…’ I finished the race and I ended up coming first.” Before such competitions, Sara has the ritual of spending time with loved ones and relaxing to music, which helps her to maintain a positive attitude with one powerful mantra: “I pride myself on the fact that I never give up, no matter what.”

Kathleen Loxton sits down with athlete Sara-Ashlee Tait to discuss success and sports

S

ara’s athletic career is impressive and varied, having started off in track and road athletics, she went on to try her hand at basketball before returning to track and road. Things changed when Sara was introduced to triathlon by Bill Chaffey, a world champion in triathlon, who, along with her then coach, encouraged her to give it a go. Initially, Sara wasn’t a fan of the cold water, and had to work especially hard, however, she found a new passion. As Sara described, “The triathlon that I went into changed my life; I was training alone all the time, and to go into a club that was so welcoming and supportive was so different.” Facing challenges with aplomb and gaining skills through the Team T-Rex Triathlon Club, with the support of her coach, Teresa Theaker, has helped Sara learn the ropes. “I thought I knew quite a bit about riding, it wasn’t that different to racing, but with all the gearing and courses, it was a lot to take on,” said Sara. One of Sara’s many accomplishments to date was competing in the 2018 Commonwealth Games. Sara recalled, “…It was such an amazing experience; a lot of the international and elite races that I do are overseas, so you don’t often get the chance to have your family and friends come and watch…”

Having grown up in an extremely close and sporty family, Sara is grateful for the support of her parents, David (who is also her handler for many competitions) and Nicola, and twin sister, Kristen. “My dad has always been my number one fan for sport, and my mum has always been there for me emotionally – she’s the one that got me to walk when I was younger [Sara was born with the condition spina bifida] – and I’ve got my twin sister as well,” said Sara. There is an exciting road ahead for this athlete and at 22-yearsold she’s only just getting started “climbing the ranks”. What’s more? Sara is currently completing a Bachelor of Design at Griffith University. “I definitely still want to go down the sport avenue, but I’m really interested in product development and concept design, as well. [Focussing] around human-centred design, but for athletes,” said Sara. Sara’s last remark is one for us all to remember: “Always believe in yourself, because once you have that belief anything is possible, no matter what anyone else says.”

With such an astounding record, what’s Sara’s most memorable race? Her first World Championship. Held in Chicago, USA, Sara fell violently ill the day before the race. Sara remembered telling GET IT October 2020

“CQU ASSOCIATE LECTURER PSYCHOLOGY REBECCA WILCOXSON, SAYS WE ARE ALL SKILLED LIARS AND UNSKILLED LIE DETECTORS”

GET IT October 2020

18

I’ve run a few questions by her to find out more:

Are we really a nation of liars?

CQU’s Rebecca Wilcoxson is out to identify liars, fibbers and truth spinners

Snezana Dudic meW an Aussie lecturer who wants to – for once and for all – separate truth from fiction

T

he schoolyard taunt ‘liar, liar, pants on fire’ is closer to the truth than you think – we’re all guilty. Despite much research investigating how we might spot a liar, it is more complicated than just relying on facial expressions, gestures and the spoken word.

Which begs the question: How do we spot a liar? CQUniversity (CQU) associate lecturer in psychology Rebecca Wilcoxson says we are all skilled liars and unskilled lie detectors. Her aspiration, through current research inspired by the 2014 unsolved mystery disappearance of 3-year-old William Tyrrell in New South Wales, is to find the answer.

Research suggests that all people lie daily – some are white lies while others are not – and those who say they do not lie, are liars. While social consensus may condemn the practice of deception, the truth is, lying supports social interactions and the ability to lie is both innate and learned. Parenting practices often involve highlighting the importance of honesty to children. However, children are taught to lie when circumstances require such, and this is called ‘being polite’. Moreover, many children spend the first few years of their lives being deceived by their parents about fictional characters such as Santa Claus and the Tooth Fairy. These non-harmful ‘white lies’ are the most common.

What types of lies do we tell? Most are lies of politeness. “No, that dress does not make you look fat”; or lies to make social interactions comfortable. Imagine if you told the checkout lady how your day really went or if every time someone said, “how are you?”, you launched into a discussion about your problems. Being able to lie effectively is often a good thing and

not being able to tell when someone is lying is also often a good thing – though I do look back on my fashion choices from the 80s and wish someone had told me the truth.

How do we spot a liar? There is no particular indicator that someone is lying. This is not to say that we won't find a way to test if someone is telling the truth in the future, just that we are not there yet. The first step in developing effective lie detection methods, in my opinion, is addressing common lie detection myths. For thousands of years, people have looked for ways to tell if another is lying.

You’re facilitating a survey to find out if we really can tell if someone is lying – what inspired this activity? I watched a video of one of the suspects [in the Tyrrell case] denying involvement over and over again and it bothered me so much that we cannot tell if someone is lying. I did my honours project in 2015 on EEG lie detection and I recently had an article published in the Australian Police Journal. It is my dream that one day we will find a way to be able to tell if a suspect is lying.

Have your say You’re invited to participate in Rebecca’s CQU Can you tell when people are lying? survey, which will assess opinions on lie detector techniques. Participation is anonymous and takes about 10 minutes. The results will be presented as part of a PhD paper, published in journal articles and referenced at industry conferences. You can also request to receive a copy of the findings by emailing r.wilcoxson@cqu.edu.au.

“MUSIC CALMS THE SOUL FOR US AND FOR OUR PETS. CALMING BACKGROUND MUSIC DISTRACTS FROM SILENCE AND SOOTHS THEIR NERVES.”

GET IT October 2020

20

Separation anxiety in pets is a big and very real problem – bigger now that so many people are heading back to work after their fur babies got used to having their humans around full time during Covid. Here’s how you can help them adjust to the new normal

S

pare a thought for our pets. While many Gold Coasters worked, schooled and self-distanced at home, our pets became the focus of attention – more cuddles, walks and family time – good for us and great for them! But what happens when we start heading back to work, school and our pre-lockdown routines and they no longer take centre stage? Just like us they can feel lost, alone and suffer from separation anxiety. Do not despair, here are some handy hints from the experts on how to recognise the signs and help your four-legged fur ball feel less stressed as they adjust.

Look for the symptoms

The transition for pets who were already anxious might be a bit trickier. Even dogs that have never shown signs of anxiety, might react emotionally when routines change. Symptoms to look for include trembling, licking of lips, pacing, increased drooling, shaking or a disinterest in food.

Allocate alone time

A daily routine will help your pet feel happy and safe. While working at home, try to physically distance yourself for at least an hour twice a day. Placing your cat or dog away from your workspace – a quiet room or the backyard – will help them transition to your sudden absence.

Melbourne Cup Luncheon

Daily walkies

While at home walk your dog morning and evening to establish a familiar routine, improve bonding, calm and reduce anxiety. Continue the regular walks when you return to work.

A ‘job’ to do

Tuesday 3rd November 12PM– 4.30PM

Enrichment toys or food puzzles will comfort and keep your dog or cat busy for hours. It’s a ‘job’ that keeps them mentally stimulated and helps manage anxiety or boredom. However, check the cause of the anxiety first, so you’re not reinforcing the issue.

• • • • •

Calming accessory

Anti-anxiety weighted coats for dogs can help to calm their nerves if they are anxious, overexcited or fearful, particularly during storms, heavy rain, or hail.

The sound of music

Music calms the soul for us and for our pets. Calming background music distracts from silence and sooths their nerves. Test their reaction while working at home. If they sleep and don’t show signs of stress, leave some music on during the day – YouTube or Spotify playlists are perfect.

Ultimately, every pet is an individual, so if you have questions or concerns about their stress and behaviour, don’t delay, speak to your vet or animal behaviour professional. A local pet store can also be a great source of information on finding out about anti-anxiety or ‘play and distract’ toys and treats to leave out during the day; and PETstock even offers a vet chat service on their website at petstock.com.au/vet/chat.

GET IT I HOME

Let’s go outside With the days getting longer and the nights getting warmer, many of us are looking at preparing our outdoor spaces to get ready for summer. With a few simple tips, the dream of creating a seamless, functional and beautiful outdoor oasis where we can relax and entertaining will be a breeze. Karin Falk Baker, Interior Design Manager for IKEA Logan gives her top tips for getting your outdoor areas ready for summer:

1

Define your space For smaller outdoor areas, start by deciding how you want to use the space. Make sure you choose furniture that will allow you to move around easily and is proportionate. Furniture such as extendable tables, foldable chairs, multifunctional and flexible furniture pieces are great for smaller set ups and means you will still be able to live large in a limited space.

GET IT October 2020

For larger areas, you can create specific zones to create the feeling of ‘a room within a room’. Group furniture based on different activities such as relaxing, eating, cooking, play and storage. The different areas can easily be defined by using outdoor rugs, plants and plant pots, as well as lights which will help you create a more intimate and cosier feel.

extension of your home 2 An Treat your outdoor space as an

extension of your home! For a seamless feel, it’s important that inside and outside feel connected in how they look and feel. This can easily be done by the choice of colours, materials and overall style. Cushions, rugs and textiles are great ways to create cohesion, as well as the style of furniture and other accessories such as pots, plants, lights and lanterns. Keeping to the same style and colour palette will help you create a space that is seamless from inside to out.

nature 3 Embrace Create a sanctuary for wellness,

peace and calm by adding plants to your space. Plants can reduce stress and promote overall wellbeing

and will add life and colour. Use decorative plants, grow herbs or use larger plants to screen and create privacy. You can use a mix of different sized pots and plants, place them at varying heights and in the corners. This will create a warm, welcoming and relaxed atmosphere. Enjoy the outdoors well into the night Add some lighting to your outdoor space to allow for a seamless transition from day to night. Use solar powered or LED lighting to save on energy or add lanterns and candles for a cosy feel. Outdoor storage Don’t forget about your outdoor storage needs, such as toys, gardening tools, towels and throws! To maximise your space, choose a modular sofa such as SOLLERÖN from IKEA that has built in storage. This keeps your things organised and at easy reach, and it also protects them from the elements.

“EIGHT AUSTRALIANS DIE EVERY DAY FROM BREAST CANCER, BUT THE AIM, WITH ONGOING COMMUNITY SUPPORT FOR RESEARCH, IS TO REACH TARGET ZERO BY 2030”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month, but where are we at in 2020 after decades of campaign awareness and funds raised for research? Snezana Dudic shares an update

T

is the month to proudly don the pink ribbon and head out to breakfast to help raise awareness and funds for a cause that has touched tens of thousands and aims to reach nil breast cancer deaths within the next decade. Since its inception in 1994, the National Breast Cancer Foundation has raised more than $181 million towards 557 game changing research projects to prevent, reduce the risk, detect, improve treatment and quality of life. Still, eight Australians die every day from breast cancer, but the aim, with ongoing community support for research, is to reach target zero by 2030.

Research To date research has saved more than 44,000 lives and increased survival rates to 91%. A recent study by scientists at the Garvan Institute of Medical Research uncovered a possible treatment regime for women with treatment resistant oestrogen receptor positive (ER+) breast cancer. Associate Professor Elgene Lim, Dr Heloisa Milioli and Dr Neil Portman discovered that if they suppressed a regulatory protein (MDM2), using a drug that is currently in clinical trials for leukemia, it led to a significant decrease in cancer growth, in both cells in culture and tumours in mice. The combination therapies also resulted in decreased growth of breast cancer cells that had become resistant to the standard treatment regime. Dr Portman said the study showed a promising new path for advanced breast cancer, which may be applicable to as many as four in five patients with advanced breast cancers.

“We hope this new approach will help us stay one step ahead of breast cancer drug resistance, said Dr Portman. The team is now working towards a clinical trial.

NBCF-funded breakthroughs 2019: Unique tumour bank to provide

new information on ways to anticipate, inhibit or supress the evolution of drug resistant HER2+ breast cancer. 2018: Professor Kelly-Anne Phillips develops web tool iPrevent to help Australian women and their clinicians accurately know and appropriately manage their breast cancer risk. 2016: Dr Samantha Oakes identifies that blocking survival protein (MCL-1) can decrease cancer metastasis, paving the way for future therapies. 2013: Professor Julie Steele develops world-first Lymph Sleeve. 2012: Dr Brendan Kennedy develops world-first smart surgical glove to ensure the entire tumour is removed during surgery.

Breast Cancer Month Be aware

Reduce the risk

Educate yourself about breast cancer, check regularly for changes and if unsure check with your GP.

Maintain a healthy lifestyle. Don’t take good health for granted.

Fundraisers Go all pink, join local campaigns and events to help raise awareness and funds for further research.

Support Stay positive and be there for your friends and family going through tests and treatments, and for those who have been on this difficult journey.

Summer Ready

Snezana Dudic on what health essentials to stock up on now before the heat is here

I

t feels as if we’ve been cooped up for ages, especially with lockdowns and working from home. But with summer just around the corner it’s time to shake off the winter blues and get prepped before heading out into the glorious Gold Coast summer sunshine, surf, sand and social scene. As much as we are an outdoorsy group of sun worshippers living in the best part of the world, we also have the unenviable reputation of one of the highest rates of skin cancer on the planet. So, no better time than now to stock up on these summer health essentials to protect from the harsh rays and revitalize at the end of the day and into the evening.

GET IT October 2020

Sunscreen The slip slop slap mantra has been with us since the seventies. Whether taking a dip, walk, beach run or meeting up with friends alfresco, there’s nothing worse than too much sun. A liberal dose of sunscreen before heading out will protect from the dangerous UV rays and give a natural summer glow. It’s also the ultimate anti-ageing secret. After sun care After a day in the sun, some after sun care or cooling spray is a refreshing treat, and sure to revitalise before you head out for the night. Lip care Keep those lips moist, shmackable and protected from drying and cracking. Hand hygiene With COVID came the reminder of hand hygiene. For those in-between times when you can’t wash with soap, keep some gel or wipes handy.

28

Insect repellent An outdoor lifestyle also means mossies, flies and midges. Add some insect repellent to the list! Energy replacement Keep up the fluids – water and energy replacing drinks work wonders. (and this way you can look forward to the bubbles at the end of the day without the worry of dehydration.) Put it all together To top it all off, treat yourself to a statement sun hat, tote and trendy summer accessories. For advice on what products are best for your skin and requirements, pop into your local healthcare provider or pharmacy for a one on one chat.

Bring on the summer.

hatever your goal – improved health, saving money, greater productivity at work or boosting energy to get through the day – channelling confidence, positivity and self-belief is the first step to success. Deep down we know what we need to do, but sometimes struggle with why we’re not doing it. The solution As they say, actions speak louder than words. The answer could be as simple as ‘behaving’ like the person you want to be. The trick is to start today, not tomorrow, next week or when the time is right. The solution is to act now. How to achieve this It’s all in the mindset and brain training. According to studies by the University of London, it takes 66 days to wire in a new habit. But once formed, it becomes automatic and the brain accepts the new behaviour, making it harder to return to old habits, allowing your body to act on a subconscious level making it almost effortless to maintain the positive changes. The plan The best plans in the world are just dust collectors unless they are put into action. It’s not easy to change behaviour and it won’t ‘just happen’. It takes hard work, inspiration, motivation and passion for the desired outcome, which is achieved through mindset. Make the decision to change The first step to the habits of success, is to surround yourself with like-minded people who will support and encourage you. Vision Personal Training Ninety-three per cent of clients say that involving family and friends in their journey was vital to their success. Vision is committed to helping implement those important changes needed to maintain a healthy lifestyle for life.

he Whitsundays, located in the Heart of the Great Barrier Reef, surrounded by 74 tropical island, wonders in the cool calm waters of the coral sea, is a truly unique and diverse holiday destination. We’ve picked our top four reasons you should visit, but honestly, we could have picked 1,004 there is so much to see and do in this incredible tropical oasis!

The Great Barrier Reef The Great Barrier Reef is one of Australia’s most remarkable natural gifts. The Whitsundays is lucky enough to be located in the Heart of the Great Barrier Reef. Swim, dive, snorkel, above or below, the Great Barrier Reef must be seen to be believed! There are so many different ways to experience one of the seven world wonders; if one day isn’t enough, you can sleep out under the stars and wake up with the fishes. Nothing beats viewing this impressive structure from the air on fixed-wing aircraft, seaplane or helicopter. No trip to the Great Barrier Reef is complete without a flyover of Heart Reef, a stunning natural composition of coral in the perfect shape of a heart.

Whitehaven Beach and Hill Inlet Sink your toes into the white silica sands of this renowned and award-winning beach, one of the many jewels in The Whitsundays crown. The crystal-clear aqua waters and pristine silica sand of world-famous Whitehaven Beach stretch over seven kilometres along Whitsunday Island, the largest of the 74 islands in the Whitsunday group. It defines nature at its best; it’s no surprise it often tops ‘best beaches’ lists the world over. A trip to Whitehaven Beach is not complete without taking the short hike to Hill Inlet Lookout, as the tide shifts, the white silica sand of Whitehaven Beach combined with the blue-green hues of the inlet blend seamlessly to create a swirling fusion of turquoise colours.

Island resorts The Whitsundays is home to seven island resorts, yep SEVEN. Who needs Bali or international travel to find the perfect tropical getaway, The Whitsundays is right on your doorstep. Hamilton Island, Intercontinental Hayman Island, Daydream Island Resort, Elysian Retreat, Palm Bay Resort and Camp Island Lodge are all found dotted throughout the Whitsunday Islands. Whether it be family-friendly, eco-friendly, all-inclusive, backto-basics, activity-based, food and wine, or pure luxury – there is a Whitsunday island to suit everyone.

Sailing The Whitsundays The Whitsundays is Australia’s heart of sailing; it is an adventure in paradise that will give you a lifetime of memories. The reason The Whitsundays is a sailing mecca is simple, the islands provide protection from the elements, and each of the 74 islands offers an array of unique experiences. Bareboating (skipper yourself ) sailing provides a chance to experience the magic of The Whitsundays at your own pace. If you’d rather let someone else take care of it all, you can hire your own vessel, and have a professional skipper and hostess at your beck and call, simply tell them where you want to go and when you want to eat. If time is of the essence or you want to meet new people, a fully crewed, organised sailing trip for two or three nights is perfect. Catamaran, mono, maxi or tall ship, whatever your choice, when you first step aboard, you will feel invigorated with the anticipation of your sailing adventure.
