In its simplest and most disturbing form, domestic violence is violence, and the dictionary describes violence as: “Behaviour involving physical force intended to hurt, damage or kill someone or something.”

We need to have the courage to speak up now before another life is taken. It is not only our responsibility as human beings, but as a community. Sadly, there are too many bystanders who don’t know what to do when faced with a domestic situation. It’s a hard place to be in. Do you call triple zero? Do you go and see what’s happening? Do you put yourself in danger too? Do you do nothing?

Podcasting: Join the revolution The first ever podcasting summit in the Southern Hemisphere is happening right here on the Gold Coast next month odcasting. Maybe you’ve heard of it? Maybe you listen to one or several in your spare time? Maybe you have your own show or maybe you want to?

Next month, on November 7-8, the Gold Coast will play host to the first podcasting summit in the Southern Hemisphere.

We Are Podcast is the brainchild of entrepreneur Ronsley Vaz, a personal chef who found his communication calling when he started his first podcast Bond Appetit.

It skyrocketed to No.1 in three categories on iTunes, including Fitness, Food and Health and Nutrition in its first month and is now downloaded up to 8000 times a day. Naturally, Ronsley has also started the We Are Podcast show this year, which went to No.1 on iTunes in the Business, Education and Podcasting categories, and is downloaded up to 1500 times a day.

What exactly is We Are Podcast?

We Are Podcast is the mother of all movements. It focuses on building better podcasting platforms for artists, business owners and personal brands in Australia. It is all about

audio-on-demand and how to create a following around something you love, monetise it and make it sustainable.

Why has podcasting become popular again in recent years?

Audio allows you to consume content and multitask. You can be driving or running or mowing the lawn; you can be doing anything and still listen. You can’t do that reading blogs or watching videos.

What attracted you to podcasting?

I like doing things that no one else is doing. I think that has been a trend in my life. It just made total sense for me. When I started Bond Appetit in November 2013, I thought if I interviewed all these people, first of all I was going to get smarter and secondly, if I did 100 interviews, I would know 100 new people that were playing in my space.

What do you like most about podcasting?

I love the conversation.

So you had success from your podcast Bond Appetit and decided to start teaching how to do it?

Yes. I reverse engineered what I did and I interviewed a bunch of podcasters who had created successful shows - and I put together a

method on how to start a podcast and get really amazing results.

What are the top three mistakes people make when it comes to podcasting?

1. Not paying attention to your audio quality.

No one will listen if it is poor quality.

2. Just creating audio files, putting them on iTunes and thinking it’s a podcast. You need to clarify your concept for it to be a podcast of value.

3. Have the right systems in place to make your life easier because it can get overwhelming.

What’s your top podcasting tip?

Clarify your concept. Take the time to get critiques, speak to as many people as possible, tell them why you want to create a podcast and get their feedback.

Gold Coaster Kate Gubanyi was in her early 30s when she got the news no one ever wants to hear.

She had breast cancer. This is her story. t the age of 28, Gold Coast wedding dress designer Kate Gubanyi felt a lump in her breast. It was the typical “pea-sized lump” doctors tell women to look out for when examining their breasts.

With her heart in her throat and fearing the worst she went to her doctor, only to be told “young lady you have no risk factors, so just go home and forget all about it”.

She wishes she hadn’t taken that advice.

It was three years later, at 31, after a friend was diagnosed with an aggressive form of breast cancer, Kate knew something wasn’t right and sought a second opinion.

The lump was growing.

“My boyfriend (now my husband) was a doctor and got the news before I did. We were sitting on the couch one night and he said:‘Babe, you have breast cancer. I’ve organised for you to get it removed on Monday’,” she says.

“I remember throwing my head in my hands and crying for a long time. But it also was a relief as I had been feeling strange and not well for a long time. I had always been a jogger and l had stopped jogging

desperately wanted kids but he told me it didn’t matter to him any more and that he would stand by me no matter what.

“My Mum and Dad came to chemo with me every time. At first we tried to make it fun, but towards the end big tears would roll down my face.

“The day after chemo I would throw up for the whole day. It was like a buzzing nauseous sensation. My long blonde hair fell out after two weeks and my skin looked white.

“My boss at the time arranged for me to keep working part time from home and that kept my mind off things. I also

off to rest.

“But I was lucky. My cancer was stage one, so I had the lumpectomy and no cancerous cells were found in my lymph nodes. I was told by my team of doctors I wouldn’t need chemotherapy.

As chemo can compromise your fertility, and my boyfriend and I both wanted children, this was great news.”

Then she got the call no one wants.

“I got some bad test results. Cancerous cells had been found in my milk ducts and I now needed a long course of aggressive chemotherapy and localised radiation. I was told I almost certainly wouldn’t have children,” Kate says.“I was devastated.

“In the beginning I had no idea what I was in for. I had no idea the treatment would suck the life out of me and leave me feeling like an empty shell.

“I needed to stop everything a normal 31 year old would be doing – such as focusing on my career, relationships and family - and work solely on my health and recovery.

Support of her family, friends and colleagues got Kate through the dark days.

“Thankfully, I had amazing support. My partner made me walk every day. I knew he

taught yoga every week to professional golfers. I wore a short blonde wig and my students just thought I had cut my hair.

“I tried to stay focused, positive and healthy.

I drank a lot of green vegetable juice and exercised every day. I think this really helped my overall recovery.”

It’s been four years since Kate had her world turned upside down.

“After chemo I did a fertility test and my hormone markers, with 100 being highly fertile and 0 being infertile, were at 6. The normal number for my age was 40.

“I was also told it wasn’t safe to become pregnant as my cancer was receptor positive to oestrogen. But two years after the treatment, a new study found that it was safe to have children. It’s important to say here, this is only one study that applied to my type of cancer and not the majority of breast cancers.

“Two years after my treatment, against all odds, I became pregnant by accident and I now have a gorgeous two-year-old boy who is our little miracle.”

Kate says facing death at a young age was one of the hardest and saddest things she ever had to comprehend.

“I feel a lot older than my years,” she says.

“But on the flip side, I am now more motivated and pursue my goals enthusiastically. I followed my passion for fashion and started designing wedding dresses.

Now I have a thriving bridal business and sell to brides all over the world.

“We have a lot of fun doing fashion shows and photoshoots, and I never fail to get excited when I see the end result of one of my new designs.

“I love everything about my life and everyone in it. I now appreciate every day and have never been happier or healthier.

“Life can be surprising and good things can come from life’s challenges.”

• October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

Benefit s and risks of breast screening ith so many mixed messages in society about breast screening, especially in young women, it’s important to weigh up the pros and cons so you can make an informed decision about your health.

There’s never been a better time than during Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October to do this.

It is recommended that women between 50 and 74 have a breast screen every two years, as the evidence of benefit is strongest in this age group. However, women can attend this service for free from the age of 40.

Benefits l Screening mammograms can show very small breast cancers. The earlier breast cancer is found, the better the chance of surviving it. l Screening mammograms are the most effective test for finding breast cancer early. No other technology has been proven, as a screening test, to reduce breast cancer deaths. l For every 1000 women aged 50-74 years who attend for a mammogram with BreastScreen, 955 women will get an all-clear result and 45 will be called back for further tests. Of these 45 women, 39 will get an all-clear and six will be diagnosed with breast cancer. For every 1000 women in this age group who are screened every two years (over 25 years), around

eight deaths from breast cancer will be prevented.

Risks l Screening mammograms detect most breast cancers present, but they are not 100 per cent accurate. There is a small chance the mammogram will look normal even if breast cancer is present. l Mammograms involve exposure to a small amount of radiation, similar to around 18 weeks’ exposure to natural radiation in our environment. l A mammogram may cause brief discomfort or pain in some women. l The majority of women requiring

further tests, due to an abnormality on their mammogram, are told no breast cancer was found. l Most breast cancers found through BreastScreen would grow and be lifethreatening if not treated. However, some cancers found and treated may not become life-threatening.

At this time, it is not possible to tell which breast cancers will become lifethreatening. Hence debate exists about over-diagnosis and treatment of breast cancers which may not impact some women in their lifetime.

Live your life how you want, doing what you want, when you want to

ver lived on a tight budget? What about as a traveller? Lisa Kishawi, a 27-year-old traveller from the Netherlands, has been globetrotting on a super-tight budget for more than six years.

The self-confessed “bum” believes experiences mean more than money ever could and so she spends very little to travel to exotic destinations around the world that others pay thousands of dollars for.

She recently spent three months in Surfers Paradise, her first Australian stop, before heading to Cairns. Lisa is on a working Visa for 12 months and cleans to get the cash she needs.

The free spirit – who has completed a Masters In Environment and Resource Management in Amsterdam – says she wanted to see a different way of life when she began travelling that wasn’t the norm.

“You don’t need to have a car, house and huge savings. Life is simpler than that. We don’t have to worry so much about the future because things will just work out,” she says.

She shares an episode of her life with Get it magazine.

I love my life. It’s not the kind perceived as valuable by most people. It’s not a life sought after, one you dream of or work for. It’s not glamorous, interesting or high level. It’s more like the kind you try to avoid at all cost. It is the bottom of the barrel, the gutter, the place you fear ending up at if all fails.

But not to me. To me it is freedom. It’s the life I choose to live right now. It is the life of endless time and possibility. It is the life of simplicity. Mere existence.

I do what I like, when I like, the way I feel like. I do things differently. Not because I want to be different, it just turns out to be that way.

I’m wearing all the clothes I have. Some of it I found, some given second-hand, most I’ve had for years. But it’s clean, warm, comfortable and not bad looking.

I’m not a bum at all costs, I actually quit couch surfing and am now renting a (shared) room in a house of four. I have the things I need: Laptop, phone and bike are my most precious possessions and I’m so grateful every time I use them. I just spent $20 on headphones because my old ones (I had for six years) broke. I used them a couple of nights ago, while dancing on the beach. Rain and sea water together with sand probably caused that. But it was worth it. I love the sound of good music in my ears while I run down the endless coastline until sunrise. I feel alive.

The next “day” I get up late because I can. I have breakfast; bananas I found in the bins of the supermarket the day before.

I pass by Max Brenner to pick up some leftovers, the tables outside are full of them. I don’t even have to go inside. I take out my Tupperware and throw everything in it (cakes, waffles, strawberries, six cups of hot chocolate fondue), and make my escape. This stuff is too good to waste. People look at me from the corners of their eyes in disbelief, but I couldn’t care. I give them a smile and skip my way to a bench out of sight in the sun to taste what is better than gold.

I watch people passing by seemingly in a hurry. They walk and talk a lot to each other or on the phone. Communication is supposed to make us intelligent, but when I listen I rarely hear anything intelligent. I wonder why the jewellery shop nearby is so busy. Can you buy anything useful there?

Later I sit on the beach and watch kids play. An older man suddenly shows up next to me. He asks for the time. I know he just wants to talk (actually, he just wants sex).

The night life starts. I see girls in heels and tight dresses with makeup on their faces outside the clubs. I decide to go in, if it’s free, but there’s something about being on a guest list (who came up with that?) I’m not on any list but somehow they let me in anyway. I don’t waste time. I take off my jacket and whatever else and start twerking on the dance floor. I know from experience these places are the worst to make friends, so I don’t try any more, but I smile a lot and if anyone talks to me I’m happy to talk back.

Before I leave I visualise $2 coins by the bar, I check but don’t find any; unusual, but I let go of the thought and leave. As I exit I see it, there, on the floor, that golden colour; small, round and shiny. I laugh to myself - the law of attraction never lets me down. Thank God. October 2015

am a firm believer that anything goes – as long as it is fabulous and it suits you - and a high-fashion event is just the place to give it your very best.

Hair and makeup are your friends when you get it right, but get it wrong and hell hath no fury.

Fashion is not really specific at the moment so the choices are endless for colours and styles. You have your outfit: Dress. Tick.

So what do you do with your greatest assets, that is, your beautiful face and hair?

Here are a few things to consider: What are you wearing?

Hair and makeup should complement, not take over, your outfit. Too much of a good thing is a bad (bad) thing, so choose one area to play up and tone the rest down.

If you are going with a bright frock, bold eyes, nude lips and an understated chignon or knot for your hair is perfect.

Playing down the dress or getting an old

favourite out of the cupboard and still want to feel brand new? Go for a super spring ontrend bright lip, big lashes and a great up-do.

Is your headwear small or large?

If your headwear is huge either opt for hair down super straight or a tight knot that will get your hair out of the way and let you play up your new accessory. Going understated with a small accessory or fascinator? Try glamorous and voluminous waves with a deep side part.

Makeup for either of these two options will depend on the colour you wear, but you can never go wrong with a classic look. If you are going vibrant, go all the way and bust out the lippy too. Just remember to take a pencil and lipstick for touch-ups … that Champagne glass will get you every time.

Suggest to a team mate that you “swap” a skill for a skill – teach each other something you previously had no knowledge of. It will stand you in good stead.

Professional networks are essential to give support, encouragement and knowledge along the upwards progression path. s the weather warms up, bodies will be on show at the spring races - and maybe even the beach. If you’re like most of us and have indulged in winter comfort food and are now looking at your swimming cossie with distaste, it’s time to give the body a quick spring clean to drop those winter kilograms.

Over the years I’ve learnt a few fail-safe concepts combining conventional and holistic medical wisdom that can quickly help shed unwanted kilos, relatively painlessly, for a special event or simply to get back on track.

Our muscles are our most active fatburning cells and the more protein we eat the more muscle we tend to put on. As a general rule, protein (such as eggs and meat) builds muscle tissue and high-glycaemic index carbohydrates (like white bread and flour) creates fat stores.

Beginning the day with a high-protein meal such as eggs or baked beans starts the day by building muscle, increasing energy and reducing sugar cravings. The better our energy and the less we crave sugar, the more likely we are to stick to our best intentions and not sabotage our weight-loss goals.

Protein again at lunch time (such as chicken or tuna and salad) supports energy and muscle production, and also helps with brain energy to keep us focused and not craving the sweet treats as we hit our lowest energy point at 3pm; just in time for school pickup or that work deadline.

Many people don’t know that we are meant to have our lightest meal at night when our digestion is at its weakest. In order to support weight loss, only foods that have a higher alkaline-forming profile - such as green vegetables, salads and vegetarian proteins due to their high mineral content (and not animal-protein foods that are acid forming) - are meant to be eaten after 3pm.

This is because the enzymes that burn fat are very sensitive to our body’s pH level and if we are too acidic then we don’t burn fat well. This is why some people find it difficult to lose weight.

My advice to quickly drop a few unwanted kilos is to have a protein shake with greens, such as the organic Wise Nutrients Clean Energy protein shake, for breakfast, a tuna or chicken salad for lunch and a veggie stir-fry,

What does your role entail?

I am the face of the company and, apart from motivating my team of computer technicians, my role is to be out and about connecting with people and building relationships.

What has been your biggest achievement?

I am the only woman on the Gold Coast who owns an I.T company that specifically looks after women and their computer problems.

One of the best things the company has done for the community is the North Gold Coast Business Expo in August, which brought together 300 small businesses.

Why do you love what you do?

Technology is so prevalent in our lives. Our youngest customer is 3 (they are the ones who tend to break their iPads the most) and our oldest is 84 years old who was referred to us by her 76-year-old boyfriend. I am passionate about technology because it keeps us connected.

How do you define success?

I am a single mum with a six-year-old daughter and my success is defined by being able to do the school run every day and work my job around my many business interests. Being there for my daughter, who is autistic, while making a decent living is my idea of success.

What do you do in your down time?

I read the newspaper from back to front (weird, I know), while drinking good coffee. I also love to travel somewhere every month with my daughter.

Favourite inspirational quote?

Today 2 year olds can unlock a phone and open and close their favourite apps all by themselves.When I was that age, I was eating dirt.

What does your role entail?

Everything! Well, almost everything. I love being a business owner and being able to make a real hands-on difference to my clients’ businesses. As a CPA and tax agent, my main role is being available to our clients on a daily basis to help them navigate the tax system, find clarity in complex business matters and support them whenever we are needed. I also look after my fabulous team of accountants, and have fun with strategic planning and looking for new opportunities for my business.

What has been your biggest achievement?

Being married for 15 years to my husband, Ben, having a great relationship with my family and being happy. In my career, I would have to say achieving first place in CPA’s tax examinations and opening my own accounting practice.

Why do you love what you do?

Technical expertise and number crunching aside, accounting is very much a relationship-based industry and I love helping people - and have been known to enjoy a lengthy chat.

Successfully helping clients achieve their goals and financial freedom – and mine too, of course.

I am five years into learning the piano – so lots of piano practice! I have recently started bike riding and curling up with a good trashy romance is very appealing.

Beware: Pets

It’s tick season Tick paralysis affects more than 20,000 domestic pets along the east coast of Australia each year

ctober may be a gorgeous time of year to get out and about and enjoy the sunshine, but it is also tick season and it can be deadly for our beloved furry friends.

Adult paralysis ticks are most active and abundant, and Gold Coast vets will see a rise in the number of patients suffering tick paralysis and urge pet owners to be vigilant.

Bayer Australia technical services veterinarian Dr Liisa Ahlstrom says:“The average cost of treating a pet with tick paralysis is around $2500, but can be as high as $10,000 for severely affected pets that require longer and more intensive treatment.”

Alongside tick-repellent products, a holistic approach is necessary to protect pets and reduce the risk of tick paralysis.

Here are seven ways pet parents can keep their pets safe: 1. Search pets every day for ticks by running your fingers through their coat to feel for bumps.

2. Pay particular attention to the head and neck areas as this is where most paralysis ticks will attach.

3. Be aware of the symptoms of tick paralysis, which may include:

l Weakness in the back legs that may appear as loss of coordination, wobbliness or a change in the sound of their bark or meow. Progressive paralysis can include the front legs.

l Retching, coughing and vomiting.

l Excessive drooling, rapid panting or difficulty breathing.

l Loss of appetite or being a bit quieter than usual.

4. If you do find a tick, remove it as soon as possible to stop it from injecting more toxin. Grasp the tick with tweezers close to the skin and twist it while pulling. Keep it for identification by your vet.

5. Keep grassed areas short and well maintained, and the garden free of bark and leaf litter.

6. Apply spot-on tick treatment for dogs (not for cats) fortnightly.

7. Get your pet to a vet immediately if they show signs of tick paralysis.

“For some women, independence means having the ability to meet all fixed costs with enough left over to invest in an annual overseas holiday. For others, it could mean the ability to have a certain amount of income into retirement, which includes a bottle of Champagne every week,” she says.

Jacqui says, generally speaking, investment goals fall into two main areas: 1. Peace of mind that you’ve done the right thing for you and your family, which can include ensuring school fees are covered for the next 12 years (and beyond these days), or 2. Making your finances work for lifestyle preferences so women can enjoy the here and now, but still plan for the future. For some, that might mean a monthly facial; others an annual holiday.

“Women can become financially independent by just starting today and not tomorrow,” she says.

“The most common mistake I see is not acting.

With so much information out there, many women are like ‘deer in the headlights’ and startled into

doing nothing; their best intentions stay merely intentions. It’s not only too much information, but can also be the fear of doing something wrong, not wanting to be different or thinking they don’t have enough.”

Jacqui says one of her most important roles is helping women take action.

“I filter information, understand what you want out of investing and get you to actively manage your wealth so it works for you - and not the other way around,” she says.

Women can simply start by partnering with a professional. Like a personal trainer for your health, partner with a financial adviser to keep on top of your finances.

“The first step is speaking to an expert. The most common mistake I see (after not acting) is trying to do it all yourself – there’s a reason why it is a full-time job for so many people.

“Instead, work out with an expert the different service levels they have, be truthful about the amount of value you’ll get from that and pay for the right level of value for you. This will pay for itself many times over for the duration of the relationship – and hopefully for many generations.”

Is it time for a digital detox?

Reduce screen time to increase creativity, performance and passion for what you do espite all the technology we have in our lives that’s supposed to save time, it seems people are more stressed and time poor than ever before. This is not “news” says The Vitality Coach Nikki Fogden-Moore. Communications regulator Ofcom found UK adults spent an average of eight hours and 41 minutes a day on media devices, compared with the average night’s sleep of eight hours and 21 minutes. That’s more time on digital devices than sleep.

According to Nielson research, Americans spend up to 60 hours a week consuming content across up to four devices - and Australia is not far behind.

Eye strain, headaches, posture issues, fatigue at work, lack of sleep and lack of physical activity are just a few side-effects of too much screen time.

“We know this is certainly the case, but what worries me is that intelligent, savvy people who know what healthy living means are not taking the most basic steps to slow it down and reboot their hard drive each day. That means getting offline to reconnect,” Nikki says.

“At a certain point, your body simply says ‘no’. It may be in the form of a cold or flu, poor eye sight, a niggling pain or injury, headaches, digestive complaints, skin disorders, insomnia or just the fact you feel exhausted and can’t concentrate efficiently during the day.

“By the time it has come to this, it’s already a reflection of a low immune system and the cellular impact of stress. A lot of emphasis is placed on exercise and diet for general health and wellbeing, but a big part of the wellness and vitality picture is often left out: Mindset and mental clarity, and getting back to basics with the three core pillars of vitality. That is, fresh air, fresh food and a fresh perspective.”

Nikki says taking regular nano-breaks away from your laptop, phone, tablet and TV can rapidly produce great results in just a few minutes every day. It can: 1. Reduce the effects of dry eyes and strained vision.

2. Create a pause of mental clarity and creativity.

3. Reconnect with your surroundings and your purpose.

4. Make more informed decisions from your gut instinct rather than being reactionary.

Here are Nikki’s practical tips for a daily reboot: During the day: l Place a sticky note on your computer that says “take a nano break” and get up and walk away from your computer, or go and talk to a colleague personally rather than emailing across the room. l Stay off Facebook and social media in the morning on the way to work. Instead listen to music, a podcast or read an actual book. l Take a fresh-air break at lunch time rather than eating lunch with your phone or iPad in front of you. l Look up and around. Head out for a quick break around the office, take the dog for a walk and be active with your kids at the weekend. l Use time away from work as time to recharge your mental and physical batteries.

At night: l Avoid TV, illuminated alarm clocks and other digital stimulus in the bedroom. l Read a book before you go to sleep rather than watching television or working late on the computer. l Meditate and concentrate on your breathing. l Channel your thoughts from worry to a place of peace. l Create a regular bedtime routine and a regular sleep-wake schedule. l Create a restful environment that is dark, cool and comfortable. l Play restful music to help you relax. l Keep a diary of things that are on your mind and get them out of your head and on to paper. Even if it’s a list of things to do for the next day.

Breast Cancer, Diet and Exercise ith October being Breast Cancer Awareness month I thought it would be a good time to weigh in on avoiding cancer as a strategy. There is no question that early detection is one of the biggest things you can do to increase survival, but rarely does anyone talk about prevention.

There are a few reasons why and I am not going to get into the political debate about that, so here is some science on diet and exercise and the effect it has on all cancers. (Please excuse the U.S.A bias with statistics) In 2012 cancer killed an estimated 577,190 people in the United States. The death rate, adjusted for the size and age of the population, has decreased by only 5 percent since 1950. And most of this decline is due to mammography screening in breast cancer and cessation of smoking, resulting in less lung cancer in men. With all the advances in science and genetic mapping survival rates for cancer have only increased because we are better at picking it up earlier, not because treatments have gotten better.

The best treatment for cancer is almost assuredly not to get cancer in the first place.

So if Cancer is just a group of cells that are reproducing out of control and have very little difference from the rest of your cells, how can you kill them without killing the healthy cells? In 1924 a scientist named Otto Warburg happened upon a counterintuitive finding: Cancer cells, even in the presence of sufficient oxygen, underwent a type of metabolism cells usually reserved for rapid energy demand – anaerobic metabolism (burning sugar as a fuel).

In fact, even when cancer cells were given additional oxygen, they still almost uniformly defaulted into using only glucose to make energy via the anaerobic pathway. This is counterintuitive because this way of making ATP (energy) is typically a last resort for cells, not a default, due to the very poor yield of ATP. The point is: cancer cells have a metabolic quirk. Regardless of how much oxygen and fatty acid they have access to, they preferentially use glucose to make energy, and they do it without their mitochondria and oxygen.

So, can this be exploited to treat or even prevent cancer?

To date, no studies in humans are evaluating the therapeutic efficacy of glucose and/or insulin reduction via diet, though I suspect that will change in the coming year or two. It may prove difficult to get funding for such a trial when there is no drug to sell if it proves conclusive?

So what to do?

In the argument of religion there is something called Pascal’s Wager. He stated that you might as well believe in God because even if you are wrong the risk of hell is worth the work. When it comes to cancer I think the most logical option is to take the Health Wager. You might as well reduce your carbohydrate intake and cut back on or cut out foods that spike insulin like sugar and wheat.

Even if we later find it does nothing you have probably lived a healthier life anyway.

It turns out that the best way of eating for effective long term 39

weight management may also be the best way to avoid cancer. This theory would help explain the rise in cancer in our society matching the increase in carbohydrate consumption. For the clients we see the biggest difference they notice is when they start eating a better balance of carbohydrate, protein and fats not only does their weight improve but they feel better and more energetic. I like to think we are helping them avoid cancer, but the jury is still out on if I am right?

ZUCCHINI ROSTI WITH POACHED EGG 5g carbs INGREDIENTS • 500g zucchini • 200g red onion • 5 eggs • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 10g coconut flour • 10g chives, fresh • 62.5ml olive oil METHOD: Grate the zucchini and remove all the liquid by pushing through a sieve or squeezing through a clean tea towel.

Grate the onion and add to the grated zucchini.

Lightly beat one egg with the salt and add to the zucchini mix.

Chop the chives, add the zucchini and mix in the coconut flour.

Cover the base of the frying pan with oil and heat.

Place 2 tablespoons of the mixture per rosti into the hot oil and cook until browned on one side. Then turn and brown on the other side.

Drain on paper towel and keep warm.

Using your favourite method poach one egg per person and serve with three rostis as a base.

PERSIAN SALAD

5g carbs

INGREDIENTS • 80g rocket • 80g baby spinach • 200g eggplant • 180g haloumi cheese • 3 tablespoons olive oil • 2 teaspoons cumin • 2 cloves fresh garlic • 1 teaspoon chilli powder • 50g pomegranate, seeds only METHOD Cube the eggplant, crush the garlic, slice the haloumi and deseed the pomegranate if using whole.

Pour the olive oil into a hot frying pan then brown the haloumi on both sides until golden.

Remove from the pan, drain on paper towel and set aside to cool.

Cook the cumin, chilli powder and garlic in the pan until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.

Add the cubed eggplant to the pan and cook until soft and lightly browned.

While the eggplant is cooling, layer the rocket and spinach on a large white plate.

Top with eggplant, haloumi and scatter with the pomegranate seeds.

BAKED CHOCOLATE SOUFFLE 11g carbs INGREDIENTS • 3 tbsp cocoa powder, unsweetened • 4 tbsp corn flour • 300ml almond milk, unsweetened • 2 tbsp sugar substitute of choice or xylitol • 50g butter • 4 eggs • 1 tsp vanilla essence METHOD: Preheat oven to 180C. Grease the soufflé dishes lightly with some of the butter.

Blend the cocoa powder and the corn flour with half of the milk to form a smooth lump-free liquid.

Place in a saucepan and add the rest of the milk, sugar substitute and butter.

Cook, stirring until thickened and set aside to cool.

Separate the eggs. Add the vanilla essence to the cooled mix, then beat in the egg yolks, one at a time.

In a clean bowl, beat the egg whites until firm.

Fold a few spoons of the egg white into the chocolate mixture to lighten it, then gently fold in the remaining whites.

Pour into the soufflé dishes and bake for about 20-30 minutes until the soufflés have risen and are firm on top.

We schedule meetings, lunches and play dates for our children. So why not sex?

hether you’re a business woman or stay-at-home mum, you are probably accustomed to a handy device called a planner.

You’ll likely find it everywhere you go – in your handbag, on your desk and even hanging on the wall. The point is women love to schedule … everything. So why doesn’t this include sex? Why do women feel so uncomfortable about blocking out a few hours during the week to enjoy their partner’s company?

I took this question to a group of girlfriends and came back with mixed reactions. Some thought it was blasphemous, others weren’t fazed and a few had tried it before. So like any good journalist, I took the question to the streets (um, bedroom) and tried it out myself.

Here is what I found.

1 Partners may be hesitant: Scheduling sex into your diary isn’t the epitome of spontaneity and passion. My partner laughed when I initially suggested it, but quickly came crawling back after reading an article that suggested many benefits. Turns out it was a great experience for the both of us.

2 The build-up is really exciting: I’m the kind of woman who will do anything that is written in my diary. So once love-making was penciled in, there was no turning back. Nothing was going to get in the way and it was surprisingly exciting. I thought about it all day and couldn’t wait to finish dinner and jump into the sack.

Scheduling sex is like a full day of foreplay!

3 It will lead to more sex: As much as women like to make rules, they also love to break them. Could you imagine how naughty it would be to have sex on Wednesday morning when you scheduled it for Thursday night? It’s silly, I know, but it works. My partner and I have spent more time in bed than ever before.

I’m the kind of woman who will do anything that is written in my diary. So once love-making was penciled in, there was no turning back.

ore often than not, when I’m super busy, stressed and sweaty (I much prefer the winter months than impending heat), getting dressed for a special occasion very swiftly shifts from an exciting experience into one of anxiety and tantrums.

It doesn’t just end there either, because from this miserable place, inevitably my hair won’t sit straight, makeup doesn’t set and I generally feel like a frazzled mess. Definitely a major confidence killer. Can you relate?

Conversely, when I’m feeling good, I can shine at a special event; compliments flow in and life is as sparkly as the beverage in my hand.

Without fail, when I’ve made time to prepare things do tend to just flow. What is it about clothes that makes or breaks our confidence though?

Last year, Professor Karen Pine shared her research on the psychology of fashion with major media around the globe including The Huffington Post and Daily Mail. Aside from discovering that one can actually make a living “researching fashion” and writing books on it (why didn’t I think of that?!), I was fascinated by the studies that indicate wearing the right or wrong clothes can have a significant effect on attitude. For example, Professor Pine found students were more assured when wearing T-shirts with superheroes plastered across the front and that women performed worse in a maths test when trying to take it wearing a swimsuit.

Her research was compiled in the book, Mind What You Wear, which highlights the huge influence our fashion choices and associated

heskill your confidence Don’t let clot routines have on self-confidence. She found what we wear doesn’t only impact perceptions of those around us, but alters our individual mental processes too. When we feel good in what we’re wearing, we feel confident, stronger and like nothing can stop us. But, research suggests that when women are stressed, we tend to neglect 90 per cent of our wardrobe and fail to plan for special events – hence, we end up feeling flat and unhappy.

None of this is surprising, but the moral of my story is that it’s important to wear the right clothes because clothes reflect mood, enhancing it for better or worse – your choice. In order to make it work for us then, preparation is vital. And really, has there ever been a better reason to ponder fashion than for our own psychological welfare?

Local stylist and popular fashion blogger/ writer Missy Robinson (missyrobinson.com.au) agrees and insists we need to invest time so we have a good time.

“Get organised at least 6-8 weeks in advance, especially with booking appointments for hair/ nails/lipo/etc. Don’t assume you can get in at the last minute. Once you have a dress, if necessary, arrange for alterations about a month out. If

you’re intending to become a size zero it’s not likely to happen in a month, so get the dress fitting well now. Finally, it’s important to seek a friend’s advice. Sorry, but hubby/boyfriend usually won’t cut it. His, ‘You’ll look amazing in anything, baby,’ comments, although true, won’t give you the reassurance you need to know you are Beyonce’s doppelgänger from the Met Ball.

Accessories should be finalised a week before, so you can do a trial run. Find hairstyles and makeup looks in magazines or on Pinterest that you can give to your beauty professionals to imitate, or find YouTube tutorials on how to recreate a look yourself. Then all you need do is put on your biggirl pants (Spanx) and be fabulous,” she says.

Fashion editorial director and stylist Elizabeth McMahon (elizabethmcmahom.com.au) adds her seven top tips for busy women trying to juggle work, life, kids and the odd cocktail party or race day.

1. Set a calendar reminder for a week or two before an event and consider your options according to the dress code (for example, is it cocktail or corporate?).

2. Scour your wardrobe and begin to piece together your look a few weeks out. If you’ve got “nothing to wear”, start searching now and remember to leave time for delivery and possible alterations if you’re ordering from the internet.

3. What accessories do you need to match your outfit? Buy/borrow/prepare – don’t forget your clutch, earrings and shoes.

4. A manicure and pedicure will achieve a polished look - especially for our events here where you’re likely to be wearing open-toe shoes - so book ahead.

5. A day or two prior, lay out the outfit and style it on your bed – include all accessories to make sure finer details are perfected.

6. The day before the event, put a moisture mask on your face to refresh skin so you’re glowing even before make-up is applied.

7. Have a fragrance on hand that makes you feel pretty.

Preparation will absolutely mean you are ready to head out the door full of confidence – looking, feeling and even smelling your best!
