what is the law?

lot of people often think about getting a Will; but like many other important priorities in life (like exercise and having a healthy diet), it isn’t until you consider what might happen if you don’t prioritise those important matters, that you can really appreciate what procrastinating or avoiding those issues might mean for you. If you do not have a Will, you will be considered Damira Hidic LLB to have died ‘intestate’ and the manner Cassandra Pullos Lawyers in which your estate will be distributed is determined by intestacy rules. These rules often do not accord with how most people may wish for their estate to be distributed.

It is particularly important that you obtain advice from a legal professional if you have recently separated, divorced or married in relation to what effect those events may have on your estate and any death benefits payable by your superannuation fund. Whilst there might be some other very stressful and emotional events happening in your life at those times, its important to take the time consider these issues and ensure your estate does not end up in the hands of an unintended beneficiary. In a lot of families, a superannuation death benefit will be the most significant asset, hence it is most important to understand to whom the your superannuation fund can distribute the benefits and how you can have “a say” in that decision.

The Succession Act 1981(Qld) sets out the formal requirements to make a valid Will. The Act also provides a framework for recognition of informal Wills.

There have been a number of recent decisions where the Courts have demonstrated a willingness to recognise informal Wills. In recent Court decisions the Court has accepted as an informal Wills: • document created on an IPhone and expressed to be the last Will, • a Microsoft Word document created on a laptop and entitled Will.doc, • a recording on a DVD by the deceased created in contemplation of death.

Whilst there is a framework for the Court to recognise document as an informal Will of the deceased, the legal costs to the estate in going through that process can be significant and there is no guarantee that every document purported to be a Will will be found by the Court to be an informal Will.

Having a properly prepared Will that takes into account your family’s situation will enable you to ensure that your family members are properly provided for.

If you own property jointly with your spouse/partner, have superannuation entitlements or have an interest in assets owned by a trust it is important for you to understand that these assets may not form part of your estate unless properly dealt with in your Will.

As I sit here penning my first welcome letter to you as the new editor of Get it Magazine, I’m reminded about how life can throw anything at you; good, bad, ugly.

We’ve got all three covered in this edition.

I feel it’s a timely reminder with October being breast cancer awareness month to really embrace the good when it happens.

Having said that some people go through the ugliest of ordeals and come out the other side with a new lease on life, an air of positivity and a sheen that will never rub off.

These are the people who amaze me. They make the world a better place, as you’ll see in this edition.

On this month’s pages we have some wonderfully moving and motivating tales. From one woman who found the humorous side to surviving breast cancer and wrote a book about it, to a champion runner whose middle name should be “inspiration”.

Right now, I couldn’t be happier to be here with you.

Editing and writing is something I love to do and makes my heart want to break into a happy dance. There’s no place I’d rather be.

These stories of inspiration and admiration are the ones I like to see get told. This is where the real magic happens.

So I thank you for taking some time for yourself each month to read what we like to think of at HQ as your mag. Something that can encourage, stimulate and bring some magic to your life, when the good, the bad or the ugly happens.

We were first certified organic in January 2001.

You’re founder of the world’s first range of certified organic skin, hair and personal care products, how important was it to you to ensure your products were ‘certified’ organic?

It was critical. It is the only way to distinguish the lies from the truth in marketing! Third-party organic certification means guaranteed integrity. Anything else is either greenwashing or hogwash.

What inspired the development of Miessence?

My inspiration came from the realisation that the cosmetic industry was rife with deception and lies. I wanted to share this information with other women, and also wanted to create a product that stood up to the utmost scrutiny. I have a degree in numerical science, not really relevant to developing organic cosmetics, but I guess it helped me do my research and the development of the formulas.

What’s your favourite product?

I can’t choose, it’s too hard. I do love my

What does ‘a day in the life of Narelle’ typically look like?

I don’t really have a typical day, but they always start with my superfood powders in a glass of juice, followed by a green smoothie or homemade muesli and some form of exercise, whether it be a bike ride to work, a walk on the beach or a gym session. Then it’s usually a combination of emails, meetings, research, writing and putting together presentations.

Can you tell me a story about some feedback or customer comments that made you really proud and reinforced to you that you’re making a difference to people’s lives by producing a special range like this?

Oh yes, these are the stories that keep me going through the hard times! I had one young woman come up to me at one of our conferences a few years ago, with some laminated photos of a female with terrible acne. I thought she was going to ask me how I could help this woman, but instead she said, “This was me before Miessence”. I looked at her face, which was beautiful and clear, and burst into tears.

What are you most looking forward to with regards to the company over the coming few years?

More wonderful stories!

When you’re not working, where would we find you hanging out on the GC? I love Springbrook and Natural Bridge, and try to get up there and walk among the forest and the waterfalls as often as I can. I love walking on the beach. I’m not a huge fan of shopping centres. I’d rather spend time with my friends and family in nature. I love Burleigh headland too.

It’s lovely sitting on the hill watching the sunset on a Sunday night before the week ahead.

Breast cancer survivor Tanya Curran Brown takes us on a journey in her new book where she uses her dry sense of humour to shed light on a dark subject in order to help women in the same situation

Battling a highly aggressive form of breast cancer, which ultimately resulted in her making the brave decision to undergo a double mastectomy, author Tanya Curran Brown turned to humour to help survive her ordeal.

In her memoir, A Tale of Two Titties, the NSW hairdresser and mother shares her personal story with a gutsy in-your-face account of her breast cancer journey and its impact on herself and her family.

She hopes by shining a humorous light on this serious disease it will be of help to other women needing a hand to hold as they fight their own cancer battle.

feelings on paper it leaves my heart and head, and I feel content and happy. It was the same thing with cancer. When I wrote down my fears and hopes it came straight from the heart and cleared my mind,” Tanya says.

“Humans are amazing creatures. We just handle situations that are put in front of us at the time and then melt down later.

At the same time I was diagnosed with cancer, my husband lost his job and we were also building a house. I had no choice, I had to work. I had to get through it.”

Tanya never believed she would die from cancer.

“Something told me; I just had a feeling.

I reckon I’ll be around for a lot longer yet,” she says. “I’ll admit I prayed to big boy upstairs to give me 10 years and I promised him I wouldn’t ask for anything else ever again as long as I got through it and was able to see my 10-year-old daughter grow 16

up … we’ve all done that before, I’m sure.

“To any person going through it, I would say rely heavily on your friends and be kind to yourself.”

A Tale of Two Titties is an engaging, funny and emotional read that aims to put a smile on the face of readers.

A tale from the book I remember when I was young and seeing my Dad leaning close to my mother’s ear whispering, “Harry down the street has a…”. Dad would look around the room to make sure no one was within ear shot. “Harry has a growth.”

Everyone would avoid Harry as if he had been diagnosed with the clap. It was the big “C word” and it had a big stigma attached. Cancer.

Roll the clock forward 40 years and things have changed for the better. Cancer

I’ll admit I prayed to big boy upstairs to give me 10 years and I promised him I wouldn’t ask for anything else ever again as long as I got through it and was able to see my 10-year-old daughter grow up … at the clinic. As the tears began to subside, the numbness set in and what was at first a terrible shock had become a challenge of survival as I got my head around the nightmare.

I waited until I felt in control of myself before telling my daughter. She was only 10 years old, so I didn’t want to go into fine details, but at the same time I didn’t want to lie to her by answering the question I dreaded, “Are you going to die?”. Instead, I whitewashed it a little.

“I don’t believe I will die from this. The doctor is going to take the lump away so it can’t grow any more. And guess what?

is talked about at the dinner table. People are only too happy to help and even raise money for the purpose of conquering this crushing disease. The media floodgates have really opened on this debilitating sickness.

I feel fortunate that support was all around me during my cancer journey, unlike some people from eras gone by.

If I felt melancholy or out of sorts there was always someone there to assess the situation and give me a cuddle or a kick, whatever I needed.

In 2005, I was diagnosed with highgrade breast cancer. High grade meaning the bloody thing had teeth and its primary purpose was to take me out. After the doctor told me I had a breast tumour, I drove around aimlessly with KY Jelly over my boobs and on my steering wheel, as well as vomit in a beach towel on the passenger seat of my car. My body had decided to give up my lunch with the news that I was harbouring an alien in one of my girls.

The very first person I told was the coffee shop owner who worked next to my salon. He put his hand on my shoulder and asked in a soft-toned voice, “Are you ok?”. I became a sniffling sap, sobbing like a bangie. Spluttering between gasps I managed to tell him what had transpired

We’re going to Luna Park this weekend”. A smile quickly replaced her tears.

My journey was an experience to say the least and not always easy, but as the years rolled on after surgery I did get my life back. As for my daughter? Well, I was never going to win that one so easily.

“Mum!” she said, “I’ve been on Google and high-grade breast cancers can kill you.

You lied to me!”

Screening is the best chance of survival Women whose breast cancers are detected through screening are more likely to survive a diagnosis than those detected otherwise, according to new research.

A new study from Cancer Council Queensland, QUT and BreastScreen Queensland has found breast cancers diagnosed through mammographic screening have a two-fold survival advantage.

The study examined population-based datasets of more than 23,000 Queensland women aged less than 90 years at diagnosis, between 1997 and 2008.

Cancer Council Queensland spokesperson Katie Clift says: “Women whose breast cancer is diagnosed through a breast screening program tend to have a better prognosis because they’re detected at an earlier, less-advanced stage.

“This study shows women screened have better survival than those not screened, even after adjusting for tumour stage. The research also found a lower risk of death from breast cancer for those living in urban and socio-economically advantaged regions in Queensland.

“Queensland women should be breast aware and familiarise themselves with the normal look and feel of their breasts,” Katie says. “All women should also see a doctor immediately if they notice any unusual breast changes.”

Breast cancer is the most common cancer diagnosed in Queensland women – around 2900 new cases are diagnosed each year, and about 500 women die from the disease.

Cancer Council Queensland recommends women aged 50-74 have a mammogram every two years through BreastScreen Queensland.

Maui: Kaanapali Beach…try snorkelling at Black Rock.

The Big Island: Go for something a little different such as Punalu’u Beach (aka Black Sand Beach) or Green Sands Beach.

Raising the bar It wouldn’t be a girls’ trip without some delectable fare and a few cocktails, right?

Exactly. Hawaii’s restaurant and bar scene is full of experienced chefs who use local produce to their advantage and mixologists who look like they are straight from the movie Cocktail.

Foodies everywhere are drawn to this part of the world and it’s not hard to see why.

La Mer, Halekulani: One of the most romantic restaurants you will ever have the pleasure of dining at. It is the finest of five-star and five-diamond establishments.

PF Changs: One of the most popular chains in the US, this Asian-themed casual dining experience is a Hawaii must try.

Cheesecake Factory: An iconic restaurant in Hawaii that’s not to be missed.

It not only offers one of 50 delectable cheesecakes for dessert, naturally, but also a variety of other flavours for entrée and main.

On tour/other things to do There’s no shortage of things to do in Hawaii; on any of the islands you choose to stay or how you want to see it. Hawaii also has a very historical and cultural side to it with Pearl Harbour and the Polynesian Cultural Center. If you pump yourself full of testosterone and eat way more calories than you are burning every day you will get bigger, this is how female body builders do it. What will happen if you lift heavy weights and eat the correct amount of whole, healthy foods, is that your muscles will get stronger and denser.

will not make you heavier More dense muscle mass will lead to a greater metabolism, which will in turn burn the fat on top of your muscle and that’s when you will get the “toned” look you’re after. Sounds perfect, right?

So, why is there this misconception that lifting heavy weights will make you bigger? There are two things that may be happening.

Firstly, when you just start out lifting weights you’re utilising muscles in ways you either haven’t ever done before, or haven’t in a really long time. (…And that muscle ache you feel for days after every time you stand or sit, is a signal that you are doing it right). Your body responds quickly to this exercise by strengthening the muscles. It takes a little while for your body to begin to utilise your metabolism to actually unlock fat from cells and put it to use as energy.

As a result there may be a short time where you are looking, or probably just feeling a little bit bulkier or heavier. The aching in your muscles may add to the feeling of being “swollen”. The process will occur though, as we have an incredibly 36

smart system, so it’s imperative that you keep pushing through this phase for the changes to happen.

The second reason, and more likely scenario, is that this new regime is often accompanied by an increase in protein and calories in the disguise of “eating to provide you with energy”, or even better “because you deserve it”! Don’t fall into the trap of over-eating because you are working harder. You still need to balance the energyin versus the energy-out ratio.

Yes, a little additional protein, for example eggs, lean meats, nuts and yogurt is required if you are lifting heavy weights.

Your body needs protein to repair the damaged muscles, but that caramel slice with cappuccino after training? That is why you get bigger. Don’t blame the weights!

forces athlete to change direction From the outside looking in, professional runner and hard-core over-trainer Sue Sheppard was the epitome of good health and fitness.

ntil she got a huge wake-up call. One day she woke up and could not feel the right side of her face.

Sue’s face was paralysed by a condition called Bell’s palsy. This could have been the beginning of the end for Sue, who was one of the first female AFL boundary umpires in South Australia.

Instead she used the wake-up call to help others create a balanced lifestyle with an emphasis on reducing and managing stress… and changed her own life at the same time.

After working in IT for 20 years and winning 22 races including the Stawall Gift 400m, Sue says she looked healthy.

“In 2000, I did nothing by halves. I was juggling work, study, running and a relationship, and it took its toll,” she says.“Bell’s palsy paralysed my face for around six weeks.”

There are many different theories on the cause of Bell’s palsy, ranging from viral infection to stress induced. Sue believes it was stress.

“Not handling my stress and bottling it all up, I was flogging myself day in day out in an attempt to be fit and healthy,” she says.

Now a more holistic approach to health and fitness is what flows through her life.

“Being active has always been a passion for me. I want everyone to experience how awesome it feels to be healthy and well as you get older,” she says. “At 46, I have the energy of someone much younger and get to do whatever I want physically because I have a strong healthy body.”

Sue’s goal is to tackle obesity, illness and disease through a preventative approach, but also through helping people create a healthier, more supportive lifestyle.

“The body wants to heal itself if we’d only give it the necessary tools – that is food, sleep, managed stress and exercise - to do so,” she says.

Beyond Potential was created underpinned by the philosophy of functional fitness.

“You see far too any trainers slamming their clients. It is just not good for the body or for your overall health. It leads to injury and pain,” she says.“With so many people choosing in their late 30s and 40s to address their health, a more balanced approach is needed.

“Good health is more than just energy in, energy out. It is about creating a body capable of real-life movement and activities, not about how much weight you can lift or how many reps you can push out in a gym or on the track.

“Conventional machine exercises and weight training isolate muscle groups rather than teaching them to work together with the body as a whole.”

The key to functional fitness is integration, not isolation. Machine-based exercises often set the user up in perfect posture to lift or move the weight. It’s easy to sit at a machine and push or pull a weight back and forth as fast as possible in an isolated movement.

Sue says this does not mimic real life.

“In the real world, you have to contend with uneven surfaces, one shopping bag heavier 38

than the other, or a shopping trolley constantly pulling you to one side while carrying a small child on your hip,” she says.

“Machine-based exercises are a great way to start, but the sooner you can get off the machines and use free weights, the better.”

Free weights encourage the body to engage core muscles and imitate real-life situations, helping the body get stronger for everyday activities.

Functional exercises mimic everyday movements, for example, the movement of “a one arm bent-over row” is the same as the movement required to start a lawnmower or the movement a carpenter may need when using a saw.

Sue says the first step in any fitness program should be learning to balance and control your own body weight and engage your core muscles correctly.

“Sadly, one of the biggest problems for many people heading into a gym or starting an exercise program, is that they head straight for the weights and end up being too sore to try again, or creating muscle imbalances that lead to injuries down the track,” she says.

Sue says her health is her number one priority now.

“If I am not healthy, vibrant and well, how can I help anyone else?” she says. “I make sure I sleep up to eight hours an night, east right for my metabolic type, move every day and go outside, drink more than 30 per cent of my body weight in water every day, meditate and have fun.”

Keeping abreast: The facts on implants Australia’s largest cosmetic surgery provider dispels the myths and misconceptions that surround the country’s number one cosmetic surgery procedure

ith the demand for cosmetic surgery in Australia at an all-time high and growing at a rate of 30 per cent annually, it’s estimated that more than 12,000 breast augmentations take place nationwide each year. Yet according to The Cosmetic Institute, a number of misconceptions about the procedure still exist.

David Segal, the co-founder and managing director of The Cosmetic Institute and author of Skin - The Essential Australian Guide, outlines the top seven most common myths about the procedure.

Breast implants will cause you to lose all feeling in your breasts The impact implants can have on sensation and sensitivity in the breast tissue will always vary from patient to patient.

“The vast majority of patients experience no permanent sensory changes after undergoing a breast augmentation,” David says.

You can’t breastfeed after breast implants Many people still believe that having breast augmentation can prevent a woman from breast feeding, however, this is usually not the case. “Provided they are inserted correctly, there is no medical evidence to suggest that implants interfere with breastfeeding,” he says. “Inserting the implant October 2014

under the muscle means it does not affect the milk ducts.”

Breast augmentation is painful surgery that requires a lot of time off work Everybody has their unique pain tolerance level and will require differing amounts of post-operative pain relief. While the length of time it takes to recover from surgery differs from person to person, most patients are able to return to work within five to seven days following surgery. “The procedure itself takes 45 minutes on average and does not require an overnight hospital stay. Patients are able to recuperate at home once discharged from recovery,” David says.

Silicone implants are not safe As one of the most thoroughly studied medical devices in the world, decades of research have gone into the safety and effectiveness of silicone implants. “Silicone is actually the most biocompatible material known to man and silicone-filled implants are supported by extensive pre-clinical testing, US clinical studies and European rupture prevalence data.”

Breast implants can rupture and harm you “These days, the chances of an implant 40

rupturing are extremely low,” David says.

“However, in the rare case that an implant did rupture, most likely due to some form of severe trauma, there would be no harm to the patient in terms of toxicity as implants are made of a gel substance that remains within a solid membrane and does not “leak” into the body, the implant would merely be removed and replaced.”

Breast implants make it hard to detect breast cancer “While radiologists are well practised in administering breast screens to women with implants, it is believed that it’s actually easier to detect changes in your breasts if you have implants as they tend to push the natural breast tissue closer to the surface, making a lump easier to feel,” David says. Regardless, it’s recommended that all women (with or without implants) monitor their breasts and have a regular examination by a doctor.

Breast implants need to be changed every 10 years According to David, implants today don’t have a set lifetime. “Unless your breasts change shape or there’s impairment to the implant, then there’s no reason to replace them, regardless of how long they’ve been in your breast.”

Have a Laugh on Me creator and blogger Emily Toxward, whose blog is read by thousands of people around Australia, believes these entrepreneurial women are only just getting started There’s a business out there for anyone who wants to blog. That’s the word from Gold Coast blogger Emily Toxward after recent reports the world-wide phenomenon is losing its sheen. Get it Magazine sits down with the blogging star to discuss what it’s all about.

Recent reports indicate ‘mummy bloggers’ may have had their day…What are your thoughts on this?

I don’t agree that mummy bloggers have peaked. There’s a new breed of us rising through the ranks offering more than just tales about breastfeeding, teething and what to feed a baby.

These days it’s a lot harder to attract readers and brands because much of it has been done before, which is why you have to be authentic - be you - and if you’re lucky like I am, people may just enjoy what you have to say.

In some ways I think the term ‘mummy bloggers’ is a bit outdated, but these parenting or lifestyle bloggers, as they are often called, are the ones most in tune with what their readers want. They are often women who have left corporate or professional careers to stay at home with their kids and are now using their smarts to earn through the power of blogs.

The way I see it is that in 10 years’ time almost everyone will have a blog and the mummy bloggers will be the ones who broke the path for everyone who follows. They have copped flak and made businesses and brands realise that bloggers do have an engaged community.

Conferences such as ProBlogger are created to help people like myself learn more about the possibilities blogging can bring. It’s an exciting world to be a part of because the way I see it is that blogging is still in its infancy and in the future instead of swapping phone numbers people we will trade blog URLs. What drew you to a life as a lifestyle blogger?

After having three kids in 3.5 years I felt as though I was constantly moaning to people who, quite frankly, were just as busy as me. So I decided to write a blog and vent there instead of chewing everyone else’s ears off.

While I’m a relatively new blogger, I turn two in September, I returned back to my paid writing work after my second child turned one. I now love that I can work between 30 and 40 hours a week at home and do school and kindy drop-off, attend sports carnivals and October 2014

Have mummy bloggers had their day?

parent help in my daughter’s classroom. It’s the flexibility of working for myself that I love.

I adore what I do and I thrive on helping other parents know they are not the only ones who feel like they haven’t always got it all together.

How did it happen for you?

After a year or so I realised I was starting to build a community that could relate to my writing and I wanted to learn more about how to do it. I attended ProBlogger last year and it was extremely empowering and informative.

From there I continued to read other blogs, connect with like-minded bloggers and just write from the heart in what I consider to be an amusing way.

Do you treat blogging as a business?

When I have paid content I definitely treat it as a business, you just have to. If a brand or business is paying you to write a sponsored post they deserve respect and professionalism.

If you treat blogging as a business you will soar, but only if you put in the hard yards. Don’t expect readers or brands to be handed to you on a platter, you have to work for it just like any successful business.

What are the benefits of it?

They are immeasurable, honestly, it’s like having an underground network of friends who know exactly what you are going through!

Being able to write how you’re feeling and maybe helping others who have been through the same experience does wonders for your mental health.

There’s also the chance to win a lot of competitions run by other bloggers. I’ve probably won up to $2000 worth of prizes and gift vouchers in the past year or so.

You are a writer though, so can anyone become a blogger?

I think anyone can write a fantastic blog, but in order to be fantastic you have to have a point of difference; something that will draw readers to you above anyone else.

Make it punchy, interesting and stand out from all the other women leading very similar lives to yours. I’m not much of a cook or a crafty person, in fact, if I could pay someone to do these things for me I would, but some bloggers I know write about cooking in the most funny and clever way. Take Amanda from Cooker and a Looker, for example, her posts are witty, smart and heartfelt, but with a side of recipe!

Whatever you do, don’t copy anyone else.

Just be relatable and honest.

What are your tips to other women who are looking to crack the lifestyle blogging market?

Write like no one is reading and don’t just say something because you think it’s what people want to hear. Most importantly, just do it. Don’t think about what others are doing and do not get hung up on your stats.

It’s easy to worry about how many people have read our posts, but what really matters is your community and how engaged they are.

Remember that what you have to say is just as valid and important as anyone else.

One of my mottos is ‘what’s the worst thing that can happen?’. Usually if you ask yourself this question when you’re afraid or uncertain, it can help you realise the worst thing that can happen is that you fail or something goes wrong. But it’s in the getting up that really matters, so give it a shot!

Taking perfect pet pictures Professional pet photographer Kerry Martin has always loved animals. But it was only when a new addition to the family arrived that she turned her passion into a business photographing families and their pets. She shares her top 10 tips on how to take the perfect pet picture. hey sleep on the bed, we plan holidays that include them, they eat as good as we do, they are usually the first ‘fur child’ in a couple’s relationship and they are definitely part of the family…Fur babies, or whatever pet name you have for yours, hold a special place in our lives, according to professional pet photographer Kerry Martin.

Capturing our animal attraction on camera has also become a popular past-time with families whose pets are an extension of them – so it’s only fitting to have them as pride of place on our walls.

“Photography was my hobby and creative outlet while I worked in a far less creative job. But when we welcomed Keiko into our family, I couldn’t stop taking photos of him. Everything was too cute and too adorable, and I wanted to photograph it all so that I would always have those memories (and dogs really do grow up from puppies

far too quickly),” says the owner of Akemi Photography.

“I was then asked by others to include their pets in their family photos and eventually just photographing their pets.

“I loved photographing these families and their pets. It was the most fun I’d had in photography. In fact, the more I do this, the more I love it. The pets I meet, the stories I hear, the love and connection that they bring to their humans – it’s incredibly uplifting and joyful.”

Kerry has four pets…The “world’s cutest dog” a Japanese Spitz named Keiko, two cats – Kimba and Mr Magoo – and a cockatiel named Kasey. And while it can get crazy at her place, it’s at the other end of the lens where the crazy, funny and wonderful stories play out.

“Recently I photographed a gorgeous Golden Retriever Zach with his best buddies –

a cat named Froggie and two green two frogs named Bertie and Lime,” says Kerry.

“It was hilarious – frogs jumping out of the shot just before I pressed the shutter, the cat was trying to encourage the much smaller froggies to play and Zach patiently watching it.

“It was creatively a wonderful challenge to include such different animals and the photos are some of my favourites (but then I do easily find favourites of every animal I photograph – they are all wonderful).”

The rise and rise of pinot gris and pinot grigio inot gris and pinot grigio are set to take over a good percentage of market share again this summer from the popular sauvignon blanc.

Sauvignon blanc, especially from the Marlborough region, it seems has at last reached its peak and it is on a steady slow climb downwards, becoming less popular with the hipster set.

On the contrary, pinot gris and pinot grigio have jumped the popularity queue. Maybe itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s the fact this grape has more body and character, and some beautiful pure-fruit characters without the grassy, herbal notes that sauvignon blanc can often portray.

It is a refreshing change and a wine that matches with many more styles of food, including spicy Asian cuisine.

So what is the difference between gris and grigio styles? Well, by the spelling we could derive that one originated in France and one in Italy, but they are all in all the same grape.

Stylistically the wines should be markedly different. When these wines are made in the new world they should display the characters as named on the label.

Pinot grigio is from the Italian style and is picked earlier. It should be lighter in its weight and alcohol strength and usually displays

crisp acidity with citrus and sometimes floral characters.

The French-style pinot gris is picked slightly later, which gives the wine more viscosity and body, and usually has a slightly more rounded mouth-filling texture. Stone fruit, spice and pear are common characters of this style, which also has a slightly higher alcohol level.

There are some terrific wines coming out in Australia from the 2013 and 2014 vintage, so go and see what all the hype is about.

2013 Longview Queenies Pinot Grigio, Adelaide Hills, SA The aromas lift out of the glass in an instant and the most evident are pear, orange blossom and quince. The palate shows more restraint with slight apple, nashi pear and lemon zest flavours, while the natural acidity keeps the finish crisp and tangy.

2014 Tim Adams Pinot Gris, Clare Valley, SA The 2014 pinot gris reveals opulent pear, lychee and peach flavours complemented by subtle citrus zest, fullness with fruit sweetness in the middle palate and cleansing acidity.

Spring is here and the Australian Macadamia Society has these fresh recipes that feature the humble macadamia nut

CHILLI CHOCOLATE MACADAMIA TART Serves 10

INGREDIENTS Pastry • 50g unsalted macadamias • 200g plain flour, sifted • 1 teaspoon salt • 1 tablespoon caster sugar • 100g cold unsalted butter, cut into cubes • 1 egg • 2 teaspoons water Filling • 7 egg yolks • 2 tablespoons caster sugar • 1 teaspoon chilli flakes • 1 cup macadamias, roasted, roughly chopped • 150ml thickened cream • 200g dark chocolate, finely chopped METHOD: Preheat oven to 180°C, fan-forced.

In a food processor blend the macadamias until finely chopped and set aside.

Blend the flour, salt, sugar and butter until they resemble breadcrumbs, add the chopped macadamias.

Lightly whisk the eggs and water together and add to the food processor with the motor running. As soon as the pastry starts to form a ball, stop blending and wrap in cling wrap shaping into a disc and place into the fridge for an hour.

Roll out the pastry between two sheets of non-stick baking paper until 3mm thickness.

Line a 26cm fluted removable-base tart tin and trim the edges. Place pastry into tin and leave in the freezer for an hour.

Remove tin from freezer and on top of the pastry, line non-stick baking paper. Fill tin with pastry weights or uncooked beans or rice and bake for 10 minutes.

Remove the weights and paper and place back into the oven for a further 10 minutes or until the pastry is golden. Reduce the oven heat to 150°C. Place the egg yolks and sugar into a medium-sized bowl and whisk until the sugar is dissolved. Add the macadamias and chilli flakes and stir to combine.

Heat the cream in a saucepan over medium heat and bring to the boil. Remove from heat, add the chocolate and stir until smooth. Pour over the egg mixture and fold through.

Pour into the tart shell and bake for 15-20 minutes or until just set. Allow to cool completely before slicing. Serve with whipped cream and mixed berries.

GREEN PAWPAW AND MACADAMIA SALAD SERVES 6

INGREDIENTS Dressing • 4 garlic cloves, roughly chopped • 2 small red chillies, sliced • ½ red onion, peeled and roughly chopped • 2 tablespoons dried shrimp, soaked in warm water for 10 minutes, drained • 2 tablespoons Thai palm sugar, grated • 200g cherry tomatoes, halved • 2 tablespoons fish sauce • 3 tablespoons lime juice • 1 tablespoon macadamia oil Salad • 1 medium green papaw or 1/2 large green pawpaw, seeds removed and grated • 200g green beans, blanched and sliced • 2 cups wild rocket leaves • ½ cup mint leaves, finely chopped • ½ cup fresh coriander leaves, finely chopped • ¼ cup fresh basil leaves, torn • 1 cup raw macadamias, roasted and roughly chopped • 1 lime, cut into wedges METHOD To make the dressing pound garlic, chillies and onion in a mortar to make a paste. Add the drained shrimp and palm sugar and lightly bruise. Add the tomatoes, fish sauce, lime juice and macadamia oil. Pound and bruise to release the juices from the tomatoes to make your dressing. It should taste hot, sweet, sour and salty.

Combine all the salad ingredients in a large bowl and toss with the dressing. Pile on to a plate and serve.

Serving suggestion: this salad is delicious with barbecued prawns.

MACADAMIA BANANA SMOOTHIE

SERVES 1

INGREDIENTS • 1 cup skim milk • ¼ cup macadamia butter* • 1 tablespoon oats • 1 banana • 1 tablespoon honey • ¼ cup plain yoghurt • ¼ cup ice • crushed macadamias for serving METHOD Blend all ingredients except for the crushed macadamias until smooth and pour into a glass to serve.

Top with crushed macadamias. *Macadamia butter is available at some farmers’ markets, specialty stores or it is easy to make your own (see the recipe at australian-macadamias.org)

his year’s Pan Pacific Masters Games, held from November 1-9, will play host to one of the biggest live entertainment programs in the games’ history with an impressive line-up of Australian rock and roll royalty.

The Games Village at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre will be transformed into a live Pan Pacific Masters Games entertainment venue for more than 12,000 accredited competitors, officials and supporters over eight huge nights.

The program will be headlined by Australian rock and roll icon and Cold Chisel guitarist Ian Moss who will perform on the opening night - Saturday, November 1 - playing songs from his prolific solo career, as well as hits from his band’s back catalogue.

The party is set to continue on Wednesday, November 5 with Absolutely 80s who will bring together some of the October 2014

“The entertainment program adds so much excitement and flare to the Pan Pacific Masters Games and we’re sure our attendees won’t be disappointed with the incredible atmosphere each night, in particular, the opening and closing ceremonies,” he says.

Assistant Minister for Tourism Gavin King says the entertainment line-up will provide an added drawcard for locals and visitors to Gold Coast for the multi-sport event.

“The Pan Pacific Masters Games attracted more than 12,000 participants from more than 30 countries in 2012, with a superb entertainment line-up offering another fantastic reason for international visitors to attend the 2014 event,” he says.

The participants from around the world will compete in more than 40 sports.

When technology meets ondon Fashion Week (LFW) − an interesting, almost surreal experience where in many ways I don’t feel I belong.

My legs aren’t long enough, nor am I so creatively fashionable that I’m stopped by paparazzi (thank God). Indeed at times during September’s SS15 showcase I felt like I needed to be reprimanded in true Meryl Streep The Devil Wears Prada style on the economic and cultural importance of such affairs. In short, the fashions of Fashion Week are a little on the wild side for me.

LFW is part of the big four (alongside New York, Paris and Milan) international fashion festivals held twice yearly. It hosts a stage where fresh trends emerge and drip down into luxury world-city boutiques, to the wardrobes of A-listers, then eventually into the grasp of those responsible for the edits we purchase at street level. Don’t get me wrong, it is exciting: pumping catwalk-appropriate house music sets the mood as photogs carting cameras the size of coffee tables seek their next lucrative shot; countless black Mercedes Benz LFWbranded vehicles constantly circle the venue, and exquisitely (or “interestingly”) dressed fashionistas, editors, bloggers and designers loiter with champagne waiting for the next show to commence. Then there’s Somerset House, an elegant neo-classical landmark overlooking the Thames, and home to this prestigious international event. There was even sun!

I of course was in attendance with the geeks, at home in the media centre where all manner of technology was on offer to enable live Tweeting, streaming, podcasting... As it turns out, I wasn’t too far off the on-trend mark, because this year’s event has been October 2014

hailed as the most technologically advanced Fashion Week to date, reflecting the city’s status as a leading tech capital of the world.

Technology is becoming ever more important at not only Fashion Week but to the industry as a whole. The digital world is helping designers build global brands, while social media and bloggers generate huge sales and promotion for new and renowned labels alike.

In fact, there was much buzz about how fashion bloggers now direct trends because of their ability to relate to consumers on a “real” level. This shift towards accessibility too, has seen a spike in new fashion apps like ASAP54 being promoted to coincide with the world’s big four fashion events. Contemporary fashion apps out of Australia and the UK are aiming to make all content we encounter “shopable”. That is, they (will) allow alluring fashion content to be emotively shared, and the moment we desire something viewed on Instagram, a catwalk, in a magazine or on television, we are able to source and buy it. Instant gratification − and an important commercial opportunity for the fashion industry.

Once we could only ever see Fashion Week images post-event on the pages of a magazine like Vogue, but not only are the majority of sets live-streamed now, but fashion houses are devising social media strategy as part of a new collection’s launch. House of Holland, for example, developed technology for their website (tryonhouseofholland.com) which enabled users to virtually try on the garments literally as they emerged on the LFW catwalk, customised to the user’s own body measurements! Very cool - very Clueless.

Topshop got in on the social action by inviting influential Instagrammers to present their views on new season’s collections, which were then showcased in Oxford Circus to thousands of engaged shoppers.

Wearable technology was also top of mind. It’s been spoken about for a long time, but we’re yet to see anything very fashionable surface. Experts at a talk on the topic during LFW agreed it is only in its infancy. Interestingly, during LFW news broke that Burberry chief executive, Angela Ahrendts, is leaving the luxury brand for a prestigious position at Apple. This just three months after Paul Deneve, former chief executive of Yves Saint Laurent also joined Apple. Speculation is now rife that the wearable tech in development at Apple will not only be special, but stylish too.

For those keen to know about the fashion, I did do some homework for you.

Unsurprisingly, technology is key in upcoming designs you’ll spot this spring/summer. Brights are brighter, punctuated by cool citrus hues as well as striking shades of orange, aqua and hot pink. Vivid graphic botanical and Balinese bloom-inspired prints digitally translated onto soft and sensual fabrics like silk will be popular, and a ‘70s “flower power” theme will thrive once again. Metallic laminated cotton was seen throughout the showcase; the fabric creates sleek and structured lines with elegant translucent fluidity. Optical illusions are on the way too, in tops and skirts featuring geometric patterns on light coloured fabric, covered by mesh to achieve the look. Clashing colours and outrageous designs will be a feature of soon-to-be-released garments, as will sequins, ruffles and feathers. Your job now is to wear it; Instagramming optional.
