LETTER FROM

Kathleen Editor

ell, Get it girls, I cannot believe it's already the silly season once again…

FREE ENTRY FREE RIDES & FACE PAINTING VISIT FROM SANTA

Over the next several weeks we will start to prepare festive decorations and gifts (or continue to organise gifts — for all you uber organised people).

FOOD TRUCKS & MARKET STYLE FOOD STALLS

Undoubtedly, over the next several weeks there will also be lots of occasions for celebrations, which is what this issue is all about. November kicks off with Melbourne Cup and then work Christmas parties will be in full swing. I have a few golden rules for these events: don’t be the last to leave (you want to leave them wanting more, not forcing you off the dancefloor); remember to balance drinking water and bubbly, and don’t skip the meal; have a safe way home planned; and lastly, have fun! Enjoy celebrating the wins of the year because you deserve it.

8PM FIREWORKS

Since you’ve been such fabulous fellow Get it girls this year, and every year, I'd like you to think of this issue as our early gift of the season to you, and we hope you love it! Just for you, we have put together a special collection of pieces on the busy-ness epidemic, finding the joy of missing out, mindfulness, festive recipes, and brilliant financial advice that'll help you through the festive season. We also have a thought-provoking article on modern protesting, inspiring local profiles and, of course, fashion that'll have you ready to celebrate in style. So, as we leave you to enjoy another issue Get it girls, remember to take time for yourself. Even if you're as bubbly as champagne, you can't pour from an empty cup. Do the things that make you happy and nurture those relationships that are important to you; that way you can truly enjoy the season, whatever it may mean to you and however you choose to celebrate it. Go ahead now, unwrap this issue, we hope you delight in every page!

GET IT I GET THINKING

Wife wanted — By Krysten Davis —

• fashion • accessories Enjoy a premium shopping experience!

’d like to start by saying that I am married, to a bloke (quite a nice bloke!) and have been for over twenty years. However, I have decided that what I need to make my life complete… is a wife. I work full-time, I have teenage children. I would like it to be someone else’s job to know when the dogs (or kids?) need worming, when we are out of toilet paper, and to decide every single night what is for BLOODY DINNER! I would like someone else to know when the in-laws’ birthdays are, and someone else to be able to work the stupid app that electronically books parent-teacher interviews (this needs to be done the very second they become available, or you end up with three ten minute parent-teacher interviews, spread out over three hours from four ‘til seven on a Friday night!). I’m not after any ‘marital duties’ (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). Hmmm… actually, I think I’d be okay with some foot rubbing.

I would like it to be someone else’s job to know when the dogs (or kids?) need worming… and to decide every single night what is for BLOODY DINNER! There’s an excellent Danish cartoon about the ‘mental load’ that women bear (Google it) and the point is that most men are really happy to help… IF you ask them, and that is the #$%@ing point! I just want the jobs to magically be done without me having to point them out, and then express my eternal gratitude for the doing of a mundane, routine job, that somehow became my responsibility! Don’t even get me started on the men who call looking after their own children (i.e. parenting) ‘babysitting’. Ok… deep breath. Will you marry me?

GET IT I LIFE

MINDFUL matters

Sarah Blinco tells us how everyday activities offer an opportunity to practice mindfulness — decrease your stress today

oga, meditation, mindfulness. We all know about the benefits and have experienced them for ourselves at one point or another. There was a time when I was able to get in an hour for all this each morning, and then some in the afternoon. Not lately. Time runs away with me. But, it’s no coincidence that I feel more stressed. I know I’m not alone though, with most of us stretched to capacity between work, family, friends, taking care of others and when we can, managing our own wellbeing. In a happy turn of events, I’ve discovered that I can actually reap the benefits of mindfulness if I incorporate it into my day — no additional time investment required. Here’s how: Walking the dog There’s a very cute cartoon drawing that did the rounds on the internet that had on it a man walking his dog. The man had a thought bubble next to his head that outlined all the things he was worrying about: paying bills, sorting out family conflict, going to work the next day… The dog had a thought bubble with an image of what was right there: the park, sunshine, his owner being outside with

November 2019

him. The picture was titled ‘mind full or mindful’. The message here is simple. Be more dog. Enjoy the walk in the moment — notice your surroundings, relish in the time. Everything else can wait. Listening to music Do you ever exercise with music, or listen to music on a commute or while you’re cleaning, outdoors, at the beach…? As long as you’re not meant to be focusing on something else (driving, working), you can truly immerse yourself in the music. Go on the journey with the melody or production in a song. Get lost in the lyrics. What other joy in life exceeds really experiencing your favourite songs? You’ll inevitably feel better for the experience. Gardening Full disclosure, I’m not particularly great at keeping anything green alive. However, is there anything more soothing than pottering around in the sunshine, tending to plants, listening to the birds and the wind in the trees? Getting back to nature provides us with the perfect chance to leave our worries behind — even if just for twenty minutes. It’s surprising how some problems are much more easily solved when we drop them from our mind and choose a few minutes of peace instead. 12

Cooking So many people will agree that their time in the kitchen isn’t a chore, but rather, they find it therapeutic. And it’s true. The chance to focus on something different from the rest of your day (unless you’re a chef, I guess), to be creative and produce something people enjoy offers us another unique way to give the thinking mind a break. Be present, indulge the senses, enjoy the moment. Gym This time is for you, but it’s not just for your body. There’s really no better place to practice mindfulness than while you’re exercising. Focus on the movements, your breath, the feeling of achievement; live within your specially curated Spotify workout soundtrack and walk away feeling rejuvenated — body, mind and spirit. They call it ‘practicing’ mindfulness for a reason — it takes practice to just ‘be’, and not worry about all the other stuff. Being ‘in the moment’ during these everyday activities goes a long way to giving your thinking mind a rest though, which has proven health benefits like reduced stress and enhanced overall wellbeing. Practice makes perfect. Let us know on social media how you get on, and if you’ve got other experience or tips to add.

Sail into paradise Southport Yacht Club has a completely new look!

BEFORE

AFTER othing depicts the Gold Coast lifestyle more aptly than the love we have of the outdoors. Sunkissed days, warm sultry nights, vibrant sunsets, fresh sea air and water views. And nothing encapsulates the idyllic Gold Coast more than Southport Yacht Club… Having recently undergone a fabulous facelift, the Club now features a fresh nautical look. The redevelopment of the Eastern Lawn, now known as the ‘4Shore Bar’, offers guests one of the most spectacular north-facing water views on the Gold Coast. The new ‘4Shore Bar’ on the Quarter Deck is a modern addition, and not only offers quick and efficient service, but also beer and cocktails on tap. These are best enjoyed near the new cedar deck, which plays host to weekly live entertainment. Based on the four founders of the Club (Firth, Carey, Robinson and Dalton) who used four vessels to take wounded servicemen on day trips around the Broadwater, the new name reflects the rich history of the club, as it was on the 26th of April (the fourth month) in 1946 that the Southport Yacht Club was formed. The Club has undertaken a dramatic change by extending their main Clubhouse decking and cantilever roof line, successfully increasing their restaurant seating to 400. Perfect for both events and a romantic dinner for two, whilst ensuring guests enjoy comfort all year round. The Club’s Head Chef, Chris Tymkin, has taken advantage of the modern outdoor entertainment area and created a tantalising tapas inspired menu. A perfect accompaniment to a chilled glass of wine, overlooking the scenic 300-berth marina. Guests can opt to have an ice-cold beer or wine at one of the high bars, or relax soaking in the views over coffee and cake. The comfortable lounges on the grassed area also give members and guests another option to relax and appreciate the stunning Gold Coast sunsets. Southport Yacht Club is home of the Bartercard Sail Paradise, the Gold Coast’s largest regatta, and finish line to Australia’s second largest yacht race, the Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race. Today, the team at Southport Yacht Club would love the opportunity to share their new environment and welcome you to the fantastic new Club. Overlooking the sparkling waters of the Gold Coast, it’s now an even more perfect place to unwind.

There are now pathways for women and girls in all aspects of the sport and girls can aspire to be whatever they want to be!

ANOTHER TRIP AROUND THE

Tayla Thorn in action against the Brisbane Lions at Metricon Stadium in 2019 (AFL Photos).

Get it’s Kathleen Loxton meets with the Gold Coast SUNS’ General Manager of Consumer and Community, Jane McGough Kathleen: In particular, this period going into 2020 has been such an important time for the team, with lots of hard work. Can you tell us a little bit about that? Jane: We’ve been working on our entry into the 2020 AFLW Season for almost two and a half years now. The first step was back in early 2017, when we applied to receive one of the licenses that the AFL was going to grant for the 2020 season. From there we worked on how best we as a club could prepare ourselves over the two-year lead in… K: This is momentous for the industry! Speaking of which, what are the goals set for the team next year? J: As a club for 2020 we’re aiming to achieve three goals: one, provide the best possible football program we can for our players and staff, including support both on and off the field; two, to be able to demonstrate a pathway and inspire young female athletes to reach the elite level; three, be known as the best integrated football club in the country, across all of our men’s, women’s, administration and academy teams. K: I understand you have seen the impact of representation already with young fans, particularly girls being encouraged by seeing women playing this fantastic sport. What does this mean for you and the women on the team? J: One of the best things about AFLW is that young girls growing up today won’t know any different and how things ‘used to be’. They’ll see men and women playing footy on TV, they’ll see women across all level of the industry — administration, media, coaching, playing, umpiring, boards — and it will be the norm. There are now pathways for women and girls in all aspects of the sport and girls can aspire to be whatever they want to be! We’ve also seen women empowered, heroes created before our very eyes, and we’ve seen players become role models, trailblazers, influencers and spokespeople for social change. Little girls and boys come to games with their favourite players on their backs, November 2019

those of our women’s players, and you’ll see them queuing for selfies and autographs. It’s very special to see. K: Your history concerning sport is so interesting. Can you share with our readers where it all started? J: I grew up in Hobart, where I lived for the first 18 years of my life. I loved school, loved being involved in sport, playing everything from hockey, netball, athletics and softball, but found rowing in year seven and focussed on that for the rest of my school life. I was pretty successful from a state and school competition perspective, but given my height (or lack of it), didn’t look to pursue it any further than that. One sport that was never an option for me at an all-girls school over 20 years ago was footy… A family friend of ours ran kids’ sports clinics in the school holidays, and from about the age of 15 I started working for him. It didn’t take me long until I was effectively running clinics every school holiday, which included managing all of the registrations, programming, lunches for the kids and managing the talent once he had locked them in. You’d even find me, as a 17-yearold P-plater in my 1986 Mitsubishi Colt, picking up some of the AFL’s biggest names, and taking them to appear and coach at the clinics. I could say that right there, my career in the sports industry began. K: Finally, what do you feel are the defining characteristics of a great sportsperson? J: One thing I have never been is a great sportsperson, but looking at the women we’ve got as part of this team, they bring so much more than their sporting ability. We have teachers, doctors, mothers, an environmental scientist, players in their 30s, young players that have come through our talent academy, players from different sports, and girls that played the game as kids, only to have been forced to give up due to a lack of opportunities, and have come back again. Each of them brings their own story and experiences, but what you’ll find is they are all dedicated, passionate, fierce, extremely competitive, resilient and most importantly, they are a family. They’ll work for one another, they’ll play for one another and they’ll each become a very important part of this special club, the Gold Coast SUNS. GET IT I FEATURE

WHY ARE YOU SO

BUSY? It’s the beginning of November and while some are excited for Christmas already, you are already stressed. Sarah Blinco decides what’s urgent and important, and what can be rescheduled for another day…

November 2019

16

t’s a lovely morning and you pop out to pick up coffee. In the street you run into a friend and you ask them how they are. “Busy!” they emphasise. “Busy” is now a standard response. Certainly, there are days when everything seems urgent and time just runs away. The to-do list grows by the hour yet there’s been no satisfying crossing off of tasks. It’s stressful. Upon closer inspection though, you might be surprised at where your ‘busy’ hours are running off to. And it’s not all on ‘urgent’ tasks. There’s plenty of evidence to suggest that ‘busy-ness’ is burning us out. It’s not to be underplayed either, because being busy can make us sick. But is this contemporary busy-ness epidemic self-perpetuated? Jo O’Donovan from workplacerelationships.com.au, answers “yes”. She works with businesses and coaches individuals on the harm of stress and why doing less is actually more productive. “There is a perception that work ‘should’ be hard; words like ‘hustle’ and ‘graft’ have created a belief that if you are not working long hours then you are not trying. The idea of being the first in the office and last to leave shows dedication and commitment. “Couple this with an increased sense of competition to live the ‘perfect life’. That is, to keep up with the woman in her late 30s who, according to social media, is eating only organic, has a great career, is a loving parent to her adorable children, works out daily and is a passionate and caring partner. “Busy-ness is often self-perpetuated. People waste a lot of time and are more overwhelmed by choice than doing the thing that needs doing… It’s even like a ‘badge of honour’ to reply ‘busy’ when people ask how you are — if you’re busy, it’s like being important!” Jo shares a relatable example that may make you laugh, or wince. “Let’s say I must organise my mother’s 70th birthday party. First, I feel I need to ask my Facebook friends for recommendations. Then I might need to ask a few Facebook groups too and look for Google reviews for everything from cakes, to venues to balloons. I no longer seem to be able to trust my own judgement or go to the local place that is easy for me to logistically pick the stuff

up from. I need to travel to every corner of the city (on top of a normal day) to put together this party, as that somehow proves my love more. Then at the event I spend the entire afternoon sharing my story about how there nearly wasn’t a cake because it was a 50km round trip to get it.” Sound familiar? We’ve bought into ‘always being on’, and it’s damaging not just our productivity but our health. Everything from skin rashes to weight gain and breathing difficulties is associated with stress — being ‘too busy’. Not forgetting, of course, the sharp rise in anxiety and depression that’s being reported within the workplace today. Samantha Taylor is the founder of The Nurture Project (thenurtureproject.com). Sam and her team have helped hundreds of women overcome anxiety by guiding them in the often-neglected life skills of self-care, exercise, nutrition, meditation, and sleep. Sam agrees with Jo that a lot our time is wasted, but it’s still our time, and it’s going somewhere — leading to those extreme feelings of overwhelm and busyness. It’s incredibly easy to spend an hour on something that should only take 20 minutes. “There is a lot of ‘busy-ness’… For example, you may pick up your phone for a reason: to check a text message. The next thing you know, you’ve checked Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, LinkedIn and your emails, then something else pings and you’re going through the whole cycle again. Think how that time adds up when you’re doing it several times a day!” Feeling like we have more time generally means we’re calmer, more organised, present and productive. If busy-ness is a mindset, we can shift it — and hence, gain back more time. Both Jo and Sam stress that the only way to get yourself out of a busy-ness mindset is to analyse where your time is going and make changes accordingly. Even if you believe there’s nothing else you can adjust, give this strategy a go for a few days and see what happens. Prioritise what needs to be done, and of course, what is important to YOU. “Sometimes my clients realise that some of the things they do each day, like drinking their morning coffee or having lunch with colleagues, are actually nurturing and restorative." Sam explains.“In their busy, time-scarce mode they saw these things as

an obligation rather than for what they can be: positive, enjoyable moments.” Sam also reminds us that it’s necessary to say NO — drop the busy-ness and claim back time. “It’s this crazy, hyper-connected world we live in now where expectations of ourselves and the others around us are sky-high. But we must ask ourselves how we can gain perspective on our lives: what’s important at the end of the day? “Being too busy and feeling the need to cram so much in, over-committing and constantly ‘achieving’ means that we are chronically stressed. The number one indicator that someone will develop anxiety or depression is chronic stress (usually for around 10 months). When you consider that serious cases of anxiety and depression have been rising each year in Australia and throughout the Western world for the past 10 years, it makes you realise that it’s our busy-ness that’s causing a stress, anxiety and depression epidemic.” No doubt we’re coming into a busy period of the year. If you’re already panicking about the state of your diary, don’t worry, you’re not alone! Time to reframe though. “As much as this time of year can be fun, it’s also got a lot of pitfalls. The extra socialising, extra errands and perhaps the forced coming together of family can be stressful. Plus throwing alcohol into the mix, people tend not to take care of themselves and health, both physical and mental, suffers,” Sam warns. We are all busy, yes. However, being aware of a busy-ness mindset takes you a step towards changing it and finding more time for yourself. That’s a little miracle, if you ask me. To help us all regain precious hours in the day, Jo and Sam have shared exclusive resources for Get it readers — their blogs will be published on Get it’s website in November.

There’s plenty of evidence to suggest that ‘busy-ness’ is burning us out. It’s not to be underplayed either, because being busy can make us sick. But is the contemporary busy-ness epidemic self-perpetuated? 17

GET IT I LIFESTYLE

Finding

JOMO Anthony Noud, founder and director of Awakened Lifestyles, teaches us how to use ‘yes’ and ‘no’ in the right places and find the joy of missing out! remember my dad suggesting I learn to “use yes and no in the right places” and that this was a very important life skill. At age 16 when he told me this, I think I rolled my eyes. How hard is it? You say yes when you mean yes.You say no when you mean no. But now in my mid 30s I can see what he meant. Let me explain… With spring upon us and the silly season just around the corner, it becomes really easy to start saying yes to all the invitations that come our way. But when was the last time you actually stopped to consider what you really want? I don’t know about you, but having weekends back-to-back with events, birthday parties, catch-ups with friends, and then all the life admin that needs to be done, can make me feel like I need a weekend from my weekend sometimes! For years I’d say ‘yes’ to people and events; part FOMO and the other part people pleasing. Pretty much anyone who suggested “we should catch up,” I’d automatically respond to with,“yes, absolutely.” Then I’d invariably have to turn up to another thing that I probably would have avoided, had I the opportunity to on the day. It was a year or so ago when I read Tim Ferriss’s book, Tribe of Mentors, that I had a lightbulb moment. In the book he compiled November 2019

short pieces of life advice from people who were the best in their field… business, art, sport, professionals, etc. One of the questions he asked all contributors was,“What is the best habit you have changed in the last 12 months?”The majority of contributors, from all different walks of life, said a version of the same thing:“I began saying NO to more stuff.” I realised that this was advice for me. I say yes to lots of engagements, often out of obligation, of wanting to be a good guy, wanting to appear a good friend. Yet, if I’d run my intentions through my value system, the only real reason I was going was because I either felt obligated to, or because I didn’t want to miss out. That’s all about me, and that’s kinda selfish. One of the contributors in the book came up with a clever strategy, whereby whenever anyone asked them to commit to something in the future, they would ask themselves, would I say yes if this commitment was in the next 24 hours? The logic being that it’s really easy to commit to things in the future as it requires no effort now.“Sure, I’ll help you move in house in five weeks mate!” (Until the moving day comes and you’re looking for ways to get out of it!) I guess now I understand what Dad was getting at, and now I’ve come up with an inner work process that now helps a lot! I realised that saying yes to anything out of obligation doesn’t feel good for me or the person asking. We all know the people who just turn up and wait around, looking for the earliest possible time to leave without appearing rude. Yuck. I don’t want to be that person. That’s not friendship, or loving, or kind. That’s people pleasing and you need to stop that. 20

I began to ask myself, what type of person do I want to be known as? What type of friend would I like to be? These questions connected me to my values, and with answers like honest, authentic and genuine, I began to see that me saying yes when I really meant no had me living well out of alignment with myself. I also began to look within and question myself before responding — do I really want to go? Is that truly how I’d like to spend my Sunday afternoon? More often than not the answer was no. That’s where I had to begin saying so. That wasn’t easy at first, but there was one thing which made it a lot easier… HAVING MORE TIME to begin doing things for myself, my family and the people who really mattered to me. It feels so empowering! As quickly as I began actually being true to myself everything changed. I turned up because I wanted to turn up and other people knew that if I was there it was because I was really there. It was here that I found my JOMO or ‘joy of missing out’. I realised that I wasn’t missing out on anything, as now I was being my authentic self and actually GAINING a whole lot more respect from within myself and others! It only took me 20 odd years, but I now understand what Dad meant. Using yes and no in the right places is indeed a very enlightened life skill! Awakened Lifestyles We work with high-functioning humans who are stuck in their head and chasing external success yet feel empty inside, helping them to face their inner fears and become happy, and content, every single day. FORCING

CHANGE Becky Ashton investigates the nature of protests over the years, and asks whether social media is the future of activism or means the end for achieving real change

rotesting is nothing new, with the first mention of one dating back to 1215! Back then, people, plans and tools were less sophisticated than they are today, but the outcome was the same, like-minded people gathering together to fight for what they believed in. Back in 1215, the protests were against the powerful monarchy in the UK, which led to the introduction of the Magna Carta, while today’s protests are against the governments in China and Iran and climate change worldwide. Everything has been the subject of protests at some point, from women’s rights, parliamentary reform, poverty, wages and working conditions to fuel prices, war, human rights and immigration. But more recently climate change protests have resonated worldwide. After all, it is a subject which impacts everyone everywhere, the old and young, rich and poor and doesn’t discriminate on sexuality, gender or ethnicity. It’s also a subject we all understand, and we all share concerns over what the world will be like for future generations. What has become obvious in recent months is the change in approach to political and social activism thanks largely to social media. November 2019

It has changed the speed at which the world moves and information spreads and has given activists the platform and ability to attract like-minded individuals and organise worldwide protest events. But, whether the new style of protest will impact policy change more effectively than traditional approaches remains to be seen. In the past, time was taken to plan, organise and implement complete campaigns designed to have the biggest impact because this was the only way things would work. Literature was produced and meetings held to share beliefs and get buy-in.Today, dates and venues can be shared on Twitter and you know people will turn up, maybe without really understanding what they are campaigning for. The civil rights movement in the USA in the 1960s, for example, took more than 10 years to organise the march on Washington. The Montgomery bus boycott (against the policy of racial segregation on the public transit system in Alabama) started by Rosa Parks came on the back of a whole year of organising and setting the wheels in motion. The main attractions of social media are speed and impact, so today’s protests can be organised quickly, but they are often without 24

the focus and direction needed to sustain the messaging and campaign — leading to a lack of resilience needed to make the required change. Social media has increased our need for instant gratification. Whether that’s news, responses or shopping, so we are all guilty of acting immediately and not necessarily thinking through all the consequences — which can often prove costly. The climate change protests, despite benefiting from social media to gather momentum, was more like a throwback to traditional protesting. There was a figurehead in Greta Thunberg, who quickly became the poster girl of the campaign and a real plan of action. It wasn’t just about protesting, Greta spoke to the people that mattered too, addressing the 2018 United Nations Climate Change Conference, where she grabbed headlines and made people listen. The worldwide protests, the first real campaign of its type then followed, to raise awareness and show that the world was not willing to sit back while politicians continued to ignore the issues. Being a 16-year-old girl Greta attracted

WHILE SOCIAL MEDIA HAS DONE SO MUCH GOOD IN RAISING AWARENESS AND BEEN A KEY FACTOR IN HELPING LIKE-MINDED ACTIVISTS FIND THEIR TRIBE IT HAS ALSO LED TO AN INCREASE IN ANGST AND AGGRESSION. the new generation of activists. Rather than people wanting climate change action for their children, these were children demanding change for themselves, so they had a future to look forward to. The campaign gathered pace thanks to social media coverage but there was more to it than just waving placards and marching — it has been supported by a well-oiled PR machine. Greta is now synonymous with climate change, so much so, she appeared on the front of Time magazine and named in their top 100 Most Influential People of 2019. She was also nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. But with ‘fame’ comes the dark side of social media and Greta, despite all the good work she has done to raise climate change to the top of the political agenda, is no exception. She became vulnerable to the anger; the trolling and even death threats were being bandied around while an effigy of the young girl was found hanging from a bridge in Rome.

The same medium which helped her have such an impact on an issue so close to her heart suddenly turned against her. More and more trolling has followed, and it became acceptable to use terrible language against a schoolgirl who was just fighting a fight she believed in for a better world for all of us. One of the biggest criticisms of social media is the impact it is believed to have on mental health. While it has done so much good in raising awareness and been a key factor in helping like-minded activists find their tribe, it has also led to an increase in angst and aggression. The Extinction Rebellion protests taking place in London are the latest in a long line by environmental campaigners attempting to convince world leaders to take the issue of climate change seriously. The “non-violent civil disobedience activist movement” who wants the governments to declare a “climate and ecological emergency” 25

also have protests planned in Amsterdam, Berlin, New York and Sydney. Following the recent climate change protests, these events have taken a different approach. Rather than march with banners and placards raising awareness, the group’s aim is to “peacefully occupy the centres of power and shut them down”. But the terms “peaceful” and “nonviolent” have to be used loosely as police had made more than 600 arrests after just 48 hours of the initial protest. Social media is going nowhere, so moving forward it will be a vital tool in our fight for change. But to ensure protests are more than just a disruption by "uncooperative crusties" to quote UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson, activists still need to do the leg work to make sure they have a robust plan to achieve real change. GET IT I SUCCESS aren continues to leave her mark as a proud Gold Coaster, and chatting to her I came to understand just how much she loves our sunkissed shores. She explained,“Why the Gold Coast? It’s simple, the Gold Coast is proudly my home. It’s where I was born, finished school, got my first weekend job, and it’s given me the opportunity to return here after working overseas and build my business over the past 26 years. I love our heartbeat; we are a city that offers a wonderful combination of enviable lifestyle and the ability to build a future in one of the most sought-after locations on the planet. It’s unique and so are its people, and I love that!” Of her inspiration, Karen said,“When I speak to other businesspeople there is always a positive undercurrent which buoys the Gold Coast, even in challenging times we look to our future with optimism and ambition. At the recent Gold Coast Bulletin’s Future Forum, Australian demographer Bernard Salt said that the Gold Coast is the only city in Australia that was not actually designed but was created by the ‘sheer will of the people.’ I think that rings true to this day — we proudly celebrate our unique identity and we are a city of go-getters! I love being part of that and having the opportunity of working on projects that are focusing on creating positive change.” As a founding ambassador of the City’s Vinnies CEO Sleep Out, board member of both the Gold Coast Community Fund (this will be her 15th year) and the Griffith Institute of Glycomics, and recently, ambassador for the St John’s Crisis Centre, amongst other

Following Phillips Get it’s Kathleen Loxton catches up with Karen Phillips, Gold Coast Citizen of the Year (2018), and Founder of the Australian Institute of Women and Women in Business Awards of Australia

community roles, Karen does just this. “I started in high school volunteering on Rotary youth projects, and that embedded my interest in serving others and supporting community causes. My business ethos has been built on a balance between supporting corporations, community and causes. Having grown up here, I’ve deeply valued opportunities to give back and be involved in community programs through various initiatives. I believe civic pride and grass-root community initiatives both play an immensely important role in continuing to strengthen our city’s heart, and create an enviable place for us all to work, live and prosper. Supporting our most vulnerable is a vital part of that… “I remember being struck by a Muhammad Ali quote years ago, ‘Service to others is the rent you pay for your room here on earth.’ I try to live and work by that simple ethos. If we all just do our little bit, it adds up pretty quickly!” Inspiring others and advocating for women has long been a part of Karen’s work, including Australia’s longest-running women’s business clubs, Early Risers, and the Empowering Young Women Project. So, what’s Karen’s message for women of all ages? “Over the years I have found three simple beliefs can make a big difference — no matter your age or background. One: believe in yourself! Two: November 2019

have faith that you are enough! And, very importantly, three: speak to yourself like you would speak to your best friend — uplifting, supportive and nurturing, not the negative self-talk that we can so easily find ourselves unconsciously doing!” Regarding future goals and exciting plans, Karen divulged, “As it’s my home city I would love to further contribute to the future development of the Gold Coast. And yes, there’s been some preliminary discussions about the possibility of council; it would be an honour to serve our community in a greater capacity. Ultimately, I’m dedicated to our city, and to supporting our community and people in the best way I can, so who knows what the future might hold.” Jane Fonda, former Prime Ministers and Olivia Newton-John have been amongst those interviewed by Karen, though when asked about a career highlight, she simply said,“I’ve been very blessed meeting so many remarkable leaders and celebrities, and Jane Fonda was certainly a career highlight, but it can be the most unexpected people who have the most powerful stories. I recently interviewed a homeless lady at this year’s Gold Coast CEO Sleep Out, and she had never spoken in public before, let alone shared her story; she was remarkable, and it was an honour to share the stage with her. I was genuinely in awe of her strength and found it a very humbling experience.” So, is there a regular day for Karen? As she put it,“I’m not sure ‘regular’ would be a word I’d use for a day! Like most people I speak to, we are all leading active lives, entwining work, family life and passion projects — there’s no nine to five! For me it starts with a community group coffee meeting, being involved at the St John’s Crisis Centre, or speaking at a business event, and then working on our QLD programs for Women in Business and trying to squeeze in a mentor session for an emerging leader. It usually starts early and ends late! But I love that I get to be involved in such varied projects and meet so many dedicated and passionate people doing great things in both the community and business. There’s great satisfaction in that and it’s ultimately what drives me and makes it all worthwhile, I feel very fortunate to live where I live, and do what I do!” 26

FROM BEACH TO BAR Hello fashionistas! The sun is shining, and tunes are playing — LOUD! Delicious cocktails are being mixed... The beach is just metres from you, and you can hear the good times calling. What else do you need for the perfect holiday or weekend adventure, besides relaxing in the sun and sipping your favourite magic potion? This calls for fashionable swimwear, that can easily be transformed to a beach or bar date, just like that! So, what do you wear if you go straight from the beach to the bar, with no stops in-between? Let me give you an insight. Firstly, a kaftan (easy to throw over swimmers), embellished sandals, oversized sunnies and a straw tote bag. Another option is a full swimsuit, that can easily become a bodysuit. Simply add wide-leg pants, fabulous earrings, sunnies, hat, espadrilles, a pop of lippy and you are good to go! A colourful or floral playsuit or jumpsuit is an instant style hit too, and can be easily packed into your tote bag. Combine with strappy sandals and, my favourite, a headscarf or wrap (to take care of that salty hair). Finally, a maxi dress will do the trick; just add shell earrings and flat, natural sandals. Get organized for a day at the beach to bar! Stay hydrated and sun protected, limit your time in our very hot temperatures, and arrive at your favourite bar, sunkissed, and ready to party! Stay stylish.

GET IT I CAREER believe the greatest risk to human potential is to stop dreaming of what is possible. Within the animal kingdom, survival of the fittest and the ability to adapt to environmental change are two very strong predictors, which ultimately determine a species’ ability to survive into the future. Let’s face it, today’s workplace can be a jungle for the unaware and underprepared. Within the context of work, survival of the fittest is replaced by the ability to add value and be relevant for the organisation you work for. From the moment you enter the workforce, you will be challenged by such factors as the speed of change, technology, globalisation, market forces

Choice, change or chance Bruce Harkness, author of Performance Matters: The Ultimate Career Survival Guide, is here to help us take power back over our careers

and workplace relations — to name a few. Those who respond positively and demonstrate a willingness to embrace all that comes will thrive, as opposed to merely survive. Employees and managers respond both negatively and positively to change. Those that refuse to embrace change and don’t have an open mind eventually leave the company, either as a result of their own choices, or the company making the decision for them. If you refuse to acknowledge and embrace change, you will greatly limit your career potential. Ultimately, you set your own limits in terms of where you take your career and, for that matter, your life. Granted, there are external factors that will have an influence on it, which I affectionately call the three Cs. Change + Choice + Chance = Career outcomes. C + C + C = Career outcomes. Change: To transform or convert something from what it is or what it was. Choice: Your right or opportunity to choose. Chance: Those wonderful moments in life where a chance meeting or opportunity presents itself. They are all around you and greatly influenced by your November 2019

Let’s face it, today’s workplace can be a jungle for the unaware and underprepared. mindset and openness to receiving them. The combination of the three Cs and how you react to them ultimately shape the direction your career will take. Regardless of the external influences that impact change and chance, you ultimately decide how you react to the changes that take place within your workplace. Yes, that’s right: choice and the power to choose is something you can control in your daily work. This is a very powerful realisation and something to keep in mind if you feel powerless to influence your career. When all is said and done, you are responsible for the choices you make and ultimately the mindset you choose to adopt. People have higher levels of satisfaction at work if they feel they have the power to make a difference with their work, have a voice within the organisation, a manager who supports them and work with colleagues that they have positive 34

relationships with — but, most importantly, if they feel empowered to do their job. Make better career choices by: l Asking yourself what is your ideal job? If you are not in it, how do you get there? l Identify three things that would improve your current work situation. l Set short and mid-term goals in terms of what you would like to achieve in your current job. l Establish a career development plan with your manager. l Write a three-year career action plan. l Focus on what you can control, not what you cannot. GET IT I HEALTH

GETTING

giftsRIGHT Sick of receiving rubbish gifts? Now is the time to set your plan in place, ensuring you never receive another crap Chrissy present ever again e can give the benefit of the doubt, for sure. It’s the ‘thought that counts’, right? Yes, we’ve all been there and braved an enthusiastic smile when it’s the opposite of what’s really going through our head. But, no longer do you need to fear that awkward moment! You too can be the recipient of only the amazing gifts. Wouldn’t that be nice? How, you ask? Here’s our four-step guide to implement in November. Be the BEST at hinting By ‘hinting’ we mean going big. Don’t hold back! Strategically set task reminders to pop up on your phone when it’s left in a public spot in your house, like the kitchen. Post-it notes are helpful. Stick them everywhere! Colour code if you feel extra inspired. Magazine cut-outs, now there’s no going wrong with those, especially when there’s a red marker-pen circle around the exact lippie you want. Don’t forget to note your shade though. Set up a Pinterest board overflowing with all the pretty things you desire. Share the link on Facebook – multiple times. You

could even start a ‘gift ideas’ WhatsApp group where hints are dropped like never before! Stick cut-outs on your fridge door. Text photos at key scrolling times of the day (we suggest lunch time and evening). Get in the face of your purchaser. Literally. The bathroom mirror or back of the toilet door should do the trick. Get vocal What does not take your fancy? Shout about that. “I HATE that old fragrance. I think it’s gone off. I need something NEW for summer (preferably in a cute purple heartshaped bottle by Vera Wang.” (Hint, hint, see previous tip.) If that special someone now buys you something for the kitchen, you’ve got serious thinking about 2020 to do over the holidays… Lead by example Demonstrate being gift-giving ready by leaving your own list lying around. should include the people you’re buying for, and the gift ideas you’re considering for them. Or, if you don’t want to give away any of your own trade secrets, leave little notes next to names that show you’re thinking about each of your recipients’ personalities and quirks. Your list shows you’re planning, being considerate and that by giving this task the time it deserves, you hope to find something that’s perfect and personal – from you to them. Hint, hint. See tip one. Plan B Probably our favourite of this process. This one’s super easy to action and ensures satisfaction every time. First, think hard about what you’d love. Cosmetics, wellness or skin care goodies, fragrance, jewellery (all of the above)... Picture it in your mind. See it, smell it, taste it. Great: go out and treat yourself. You deserve it, right?

The secrets

of City Cave An oasis of wellness is awaiting you at Mermaid Waters, and its name is City Cave

old Coasters are flocking to experience a world of calm, and to escape their busy lives for a little while. City Cave is indeed a world unto its own, offering all sorts of magical experiences, including float therapy, infrared saunas, massages of countless varieties, and an array of therapy sessions, courtesy of the experienced and friendly professionals who practice there. Now, it’s difficult to pick just one of these (and who says you must pick just one?), but while you’re there, we would suggest indulging in an incredible float therapy session, or a moment in the infrared sauna. And, we’ll let you in on a secret… there’s major health benefits to both!

FLOAT YOUR TROUBLES AWAY… Want to declutter your mind and body of unwanted tension? Float therapy is the way to go. Besides the mental and physical health benefits of true relaxation and sensory deprivation, the Epsom Salts that City Cave use are anti-inflammatory and natural muscle relaxants, that are rich in magnesium. This has the added benefit of allowing your body to let go, ultimately lowering your cortisol levels (your stress hormone), which allows the mind to follow the body into deep relaxation. What’s more, City Cave uses float pools, not pods, for ultimate comfort. BURN CALORIES WHILE YOU RELAX… Through heat and light, City Cave’s infrared saunas relax and detoxify the body. This technology has been used to relieve pain, increase circulation, and purify skin. Deep tissue stimulation also improves cell health and tissue growth, helping you live longer. Unlike a regular sauna though, the infrared sauna heats your body by penetrating deep into your joints and muscles, just as the sun would — without the UV damage. Furthermore, you can enjoy the added benefits of a boosted immune system, improved cardiovascular exercise, a weight-

loss boost, and accelerated recovery from injury. Finally, spending time in City Cave’s infrared saunas burns 600+ calories in 45 minutes. Talk about magical! So, what are you waiting for? Venture down to City Cave today, you won’t regret this adventure.

ublin, a city that never fails to charm. The people are friendly and funny, the land is green, and architecture is just as you’ve dreamed. Most people want to visit Dublin — it’s one of those aspirational destinations. This is never more obvious than when you’re lined up with the hordes to enter grand Trinity College or elbowing through a sea of people to hear live music up close in Temple Bar. Where to start then? There’s countless excellent museums, galleries, tours and even evening ghost walks that will immerse you in the living history of this place. Dublin — like Ireland — is bursting with heritage and intrigue. This old city has witnessed soaring highs and crushing lows as time’s gone by. On the flight over, a stranger inspired my partner and I to try something a bit different — sample, if you will, Dublin’s past and get acquainted with its future, through the lens of Guinness and whiskey. Challenge accepted. Responsibly of course. JAMESON WHISKEY DISTILLERY The story goes, that in 1780 John Jameson threw open the doors of the Jameson Distillery on Bow Street. Over 200 years later, the doors are still open to friends old and new. We loved it here, and it had nothing to do with the Old Fashioned we started our distillery tour with! Let’s just say it was after midday, okay? Hats off to Jameson — the storytelling, visual production and creative spaces for visitors are simply excellent. A beautifully presented timeline of the whiskey industry and interactive digital features demonstrate how Dublin enjoyed its heyday in the 18th century, and the whiskey business boomed. But difficulties struck. From political troubles and the devastating potato famine, to prohibition in America (critical to whiskey trade) and Second World War — these events took a terrible toll on the industry. Few businesses survived; Jameson is one of them. The team here showed us just how big this operation has been in Dublin, in the past and to this day. Take the tour, taste the sweet wares and 39

feel that little bit more connected to this cool capital. GUINNESS STOREHOUSE All the tourists I mentioned, they congregate here — so go early but do go. The Storehouse is impressive, seven floors high with a sky bar, several tasting areas and interactive sections showcasing the impact this famous brand has had on Dublin’s growth and the world. The highlight for me was pouring my first ever pint. There’s a precise method which should be honoured by all who serve Guinness globally. So naturally skilled am I, that my pint was presented as an example to my classmates in the ‘Guinness Academy’. (or maybe it’s because mine was closest to the bartender — secret’s ours, then). Arthur Guinness founded the brewery back in 1759. His own humble beginnings motivated him to promote human and workers’ rights in his business and beyond. Having a job at Guinness meant you and your family were looked after. What you’ll take away from the Guinness Storehouse is new appreciation, for Guinness like all the most famous brews, comes with a warming tale, and one that’s uniquely Irish. TEELING WHISKEY DISTILLERY A hot new player in the old world of Irish whiskey, Teeling opened its doors in 2015. A brave move by entrepreneurs and brothers Jack and Stephen Teeling. Like Jameson and Guinness, Teeling offers a wonderful sensory experience where visitors are immersed in each part of the production process. Teeling sets the tone with unique flavours and flair all their own, tasty enough to make even non-whiskey drinkers rethink your position. It’s worth topping off your tipple tour by seeing — and tasting — their delicious Irish stories. You can discover these experiences and more using a Dublin Pass, as we did, or make your way around on foot or via local transport. An Irish adventure awaits! All you need to do, is show up.

GET IT I MONEY

The holiday In the spirit of the season, Les McGuire ADFS(FP), Principal of Future Proof Financial, guides us in planning that dream Christmas getaway ovember is known for many great things, whether it’s Melbourne Cup or Movember, where some men grow a moustache for a great cause. But what about planning for the ideal holiday without breaking the budget? There are many things we can consider when it comes to holidaying planning, without carrying the burden of debt after. Travelling around the world, with some pre-planning, can be achieved cheaply without compromising the amazing experience. The first overseas trip I took with my family was in 2012, when we ventured on a skiing holiday to Canada. With a family of three young daughters, sensible planning was crucial. The largest cost often being accommodation and food. I took to the internet to try and find a solution to this problem and found various home exchange sites. At first, there was the trust issue — someone else I would possibly never meet would be living in my home. I asked myself, what do you do with your personal belongings? There were many things to consider. I messaged the family looking for an exchange in Canada, then Skyped them; they were professionals in a beautiful home, and so the relationship began. We swapped homes, cars, they let us use their ski gear and lockers. Wow! There were so many cost savings. We stayed in their home, with full use of all facilities for no extra cost. The experience was so amazing, and now we have completed four home exchanges to various parts of the world with great success. The process is easy, and for a small cost you can register on one of the many sites as a member. I used homeexchange.com. Once registered, you have full visibility of all of the homes available around the world.Go to the region you would like to visit and start messaging people. Other members wanting to visit Australia will send you personal messages, which often can be the beginning of an amazing friendship. November 2019

If booking through a travel agent is more your thing, it can be a great hassle-free experience, but beware — some agents charge additional fees for changing your plans. While most travel companies are transparent with their deals, some use creative wording that is hard even for a PhD student to understand. Keep an eye out for “valued up to”,and “prices from”,as they are subjective open terms. Conduct your own price checks on sites such as Expedia, Trivago or Last Minute Deals to name a few. If you see “from $xx” or “base fare”, beware, you can usually expect additional charges with any modifications made to the booking. The process of charging additional fees is referred to as drip

The excitement of a holiday should begin when you book the tickets.

’’

pricing (the practice of incrementally disclosing additional fees and charges in a booking process, which misleads consumers not aware of such charges at the start of the transaction). The ACCC has been clamping down on this practice, to ensure those travel agents disclose transparent pricing for consumers. Be careful when it comes to any associated block out dates and be sure to read all fine print carefully, paying particular attention to when the product needs to be booked and paid for. The excitement of a holiday should begin when you book the tickets. Travel insurance is a must! Many people are not aware that they have comprehensive travel insurance on their credit cards, if they book and pay on their cards. The risk of travelling to another country without it is far too risky. As always, keep smiling, take care and if you have any questions email me les@futureproof.com.au 40

Helen Baker, financial advisor and author, shares the best savvy hacks to keep us on budget when planning for the silly season

hristmas pudding doesn’t taste as good when it’s being digested alongside a money induced stress ulcer. But unfortunately, the cost of getting through Christmas does tend to raise the stress levels for a lot of people. According to the Reserve Bank of Australia, 27 per cent of credit card holders will still be paying off their 2018 Christmas credit card debt by January 2020 — and yet another Christmas will arrive in between. Planning and tracking are the keys to making Christmas bearable for your budget. Now is the time to get on top of it. Make a budget, set some boundaries with the family, do thorough research and take advantage of the best deals available. Generally, I plan for three types of expense ahead of Christmas: presents, catering and that all-important holiday. Presents Set a price limit and stick to it. If you get what you want for less than the limit, smile and use the extra cash to pay off debts or save towards something nice. Buy gifts when you see them, not just the week before Christmas. There will be plenty of unanticipated jobs to do right before Christmas, so give future you a break. Look out for sale periods throughout the year. Following brands and retailers on social media is an easy way to know about any price changes and there are usually discount codes available. Googling discount codes can also yield results. 29 November 2019 marks the Black Friday sale, an American tradition that has found its way here and an opportunity to get a great bargain. Remember, paying interest on your credit card means you lost the bargain, so stick

to your budget. Beware of traps like price deception — when prices are marked up and then down to make you think you’re getting a deal. Planning and researching ahead of time will ensure you’re not taken for a ride. Minimising has been a huge trend in the past 12 months. A lot of people watched Marie Kondo throwing out stuff and followed suit, so the last thing they want at Christmas is clutter. Combine budgets for meaningful and purposeful gifts, or gift an experience. Vouchers for tours, classes and shows can be thoughtful and a way to spend time with your recipient if that’s another goal. If you’re in a relationship, consider agreeing on a spending limit or perhaps just buy gifts for the kids this year and take yourselves out for a nice dinner instead. Look for bargains in op shops, antique stores and second-hand bookshops. This is a great way to find a unique gift that no one else will have. If you’re a bit short on cash, how about making money to spend money? Have a good clean-out and sell old bikes, sports equipment and other stuff cluttering up your house and shed. Using Gumtree or having a garage sale will gain you some space and cash. Catering Start cleaning out your freezer and using what’s in there. That way, you can take advantage of the sales on some food items, like meat, when they come up. We all love Christmas leftovers, but some foods just don’t survive sitting on the table for a few hours on a 35-degree Christmas Day. Have a good think about how much you’ll need. Some families like to put on a variable feast of seafood, meats, salads and roast vegetables 41

which can lead to leftovers galore. Plan to make less of the foods that won’t keep, or simply make smaller portions. We are creatures of habit when it comes to grocery shopping, but price wars between stores are there for our benefit. Check the junk mail or online for specials and if need be, do your big grocery shop at a mall with multiple grocery retailers so you can switch stores and save money. People love to feel part of an event, so don’t be afraid to ask people to bring a dish; maybe their famous specialty or their favourite Christmas food. Look out for bulk buying deals on alcohol and food, which you can split with friends or family. Holiday If you’re financially responsible enough to afford a Christmas holiday, then well done. Researching and planning a holiday can be time consuming so start early. Monitor travel sites and follow social media accounts featuring your favourite destinations so you’re alerted to deals. There are all sorts of price drop alerts and deal subscriptions to sign up for, which can load your email with junk. Set your inbox to file them automatically and check it periodically in your hunt for holiday deals. Remember the good ol’ camping days — cheap and cheerful. Holidays are really about spending time and exploring, so change everyone’s perspective. Get away from technology. Christmas can be a stressful time for a variety of reasons, but by planning and tracking your spending, you can avoid mounting debt and enjoy a worry-free holiday season. November 2019

CHOCOLATE TAHINI BLISS BALLS TIME: 25 Minutes SERVE: 12 Gluten free / Dairy free / Vegetarian INGREDIENTS 1/4 cup of unhulled tahini (mayvers.com.au/product/mayversorganic-unhulled-tahini/)

1/8 cup of maple syrup 1/4 cup of finely shredded coconut 1/4 cup of almond meal 1/4 cup of quinoa flakes 1/8 cup cacao 1 tbsp chia seeds 1 tsp instant espresso (to help enhance the richness of the chocolate) Sprinkles Cacao Coconut flakes METHOD Place all ingredients into a medium-size bowl and stir to combine. Scoop a small section of dough and shape roll in the palm of your hand to shape into bite-size balls, repeat until all the mixture has been used. Tip: Use approximately 1 heaping teaspoon per bite, which makes them the perfect size for popping into your mouth on the down-low, so you don’t have to share! If you are going to coat your bliss bites in cacao, coconut or sprinkles, simply place your cacao, coconut and/or sprinkles into a small bowl or zip lock bag and gently shake until nicely coated. GET IT I WELLBEING

ASMR

– the biggest trend you’ve never heard of With more than 13 million dedicated videos on YouTube, it’s no wonder the world is tingling over ‘autonomous sensory meridian responses’. Sarah Blinco is curious…

um warned me about curiosity, and what happened to the cat. I get it now. It’s just that once you Google this, there’s no going back. Search results include:‘ASMR Fast and Aggressive Triggers’;‘Gentle whispering ASMR’;‘ASMR cheesy hash browns and chicken nuggets’;‘Relaxing slime videos’; ‘ASMR ear eating…’ What the? It’s likely someone is having an ‘ASMR’ brainsgasm’ as you read this. All over listening to someone brushing their hair, tapping nails on a desk or whispering. Yes, it’s a thing. You want to look now, don’t you? If you do, don’t worry, it’s not anything you’re likely to get into trouble for at work. Probably. Take your pick on YouTube: GentleWhispering has amassed 1.7m subscribers and Heather Feather (yup!), is up to 508,000. But there’s plenty more where they come from. Be warned: responses vary, from ecstasy to calm — or, at worst, no response at all. I lie.‘Cringe’ and ‘uncomfortable’ are two I experienced while researching this ‘phenomenon’. I’m starting to wonder if I did something wrong, that the Get it team put me on this assignment. What exactly is going on? This unique condition emerged online because a lot of people respond positively November 2019

to ASMR triggers like those mentioned — whispering, crinkling sounds and so on. The trick lies in the sound experience. Mashable.com explains that savvy YouTubers quick to jump on the bandwagon are becoming famous as ‘ASMRtists’, and they use binaural microphones to accomplish real interactive sounds that put the listener in the room with them. Millennial Ink blogger, Laura Kowski, wrote a traffic-pulling post on the topic,‘A deep dive into the weird world of ASMR, soap-cutting and breadfacing’. She now has readers find her blog after searching for the term,‘why does soap cutting arouse me’, and tells Get it that she’s baffled yet fascinated by what she has stumbled upon. “Part of the boom in ASMR content is due to its viral nature, which undoubtedly a lot of ASMR ‘creators’ have capitalised on. I think we’ll soon see big brands and companies utlising ASMR in their marketing, in a contrasting move away from the loud, high-intensity style of traditional advertising.” Still, Laura’s not convinced of ASMR’s allure.“I saw all kinds of uncomfortable things when researching this topic. Lens licking is something I’ll never forget, and not in a good way!” You need to calm down Ok ok, so ASMR isn’t as suss as it sounds. Hair brushing and hash browns, whispering and slime: for their audience they trigger a tingly sensation or relaxation throughout the 46

body. The responses are non-sexual, although I’m going nowhere near the ‘ear eating’ vid that came up on my YouTube search. While science is yet to back any of this, ASMR’s benefits have been compared with mindfulness. And for those who respond to this, er, stimulation, they claim it helps with improving sleep and maintaining a sense of calm. Get your kicks Could you be one of the millions of new fans ASMR is collecting online? You’ll get the best benefit by using binaural-friendly headphones. Additionally, new SleepPhones ASMR Edition (available at SleepPhones. com) do indicate there’s something in this for the insomniacs amongst us.They’re the first headphones to come preloaded with “deeply relaxing ASMR content”. Before you commit however, do check out some YouTube videos first, in case it so happens you’re creeped out by it all. Each to their own.

A WARNING

for SEPARATED

PARENTS

Family Law accredited specialist Luke Brandon explains why separated or separating parents should NOT get lost in the battle for ‘time with the kids’

t never ceases to amaze me when I see such great parents acting in a way which is so damaging to their children in the aftermath of separation. I understand their motivations — I act for as many dads as I do mums — fear plays a big part. Fear of losing a relationship with their children, of ‘being replaced’, or of the other parent manipulating the children against them.  I am not talking about the cases where there is mental illness, homelessness, violence, alcoholism or drug use, but those where parents have provided their children a nurturing, stable and secure environment. I’m talking about parents who obviously love their kids and want the best for them. I have mums telling me that the children spending time with their dad during the week is too disruptive; and dads asking me why the mother gets more time. All logical points — from their own perspective — but very misguided. To the mum who says midweek time is disruptive: no, it is not ideal, but neither is the child having to grow up with separated parents. Have you considered the good that comes from that time? There are significant benefits for children who know their fathers are involved in their lives. To the dad that demands equal time because he is as much a parent as the mother: there’s a huge body of social science that supports that such arrangements produce poor outcomes unless certain criteria are met. These include good communication, high level of trust, similar parenting styles and routines, flexibility in arrangements. The mere fact that the parents cannot agree is indicative that an equal care arrangement is unlikely to be best for the child. I have clients who call me several years after orders 47

were made for equal time, telling me that they no longer see their child or that the child no longer sees the other parent. Often this is because the child has reached adolescence and is sick of shifting around each week and being ‘stuck in the middle’. The children did not choose the separation, nor did they choose the life that comes along with it. They did not choose to not be able to see each of their parents each day or to live between households.  Even as the parent who did not instigate a separation, remember that the only innocent party is the child. One parent may blame the other for ‘breaking up the family’, but I remind them that they did choose to start a family with the other in the beginning. Personally, if I got off track and was behaving in a way which was damaging to my children, I would want to refocus. In my role as a family lawyer I am direct, which may come across as harsh. However, I do everything I can to ensure that good parents who do obviously love their kids, are able to transition through separation quickly and healthily, with least damage caused to the children as possible. If you are contemplating separation or have recently separated, don't fight for time. Rather, do what you have always done: love, care, support and nurture your children. They'll be better for it, as will your relationship with the other parent in the long term. Remember, there are birthdays, graduations, engagements, weddings and christenings all ahead of you where your children will want you both there with them. Capricorn December 22 – January 20

Plans and commitments with other people and group activities could become skewed and confusing. Don't worry though, the real treasure and benefits to be sought this month are in private sanctuary, dreamscapes, time out and private realms. Don’t let any external clutter or confusion detract — this is where the real magic sprouts. Holiday movie: The Nightmare before Christmas

Aquarius January 21 – February 19

Real benefits and connection can be made by social activities and engagements this month. Venus, who loves to bring people together to harmonize, is sharing space with Jupiter in your social sector. Balancing personal and work life is key. Holiday movie: National Lampoon's Christmas

Pisces February 19 – March 20

Leo July 22 – August 23

Having your ruler, Jupiter, in your career sector all year was like having Christmas come early. But Venus’ arrival really pulls everything together. All the hard work you have put into your career this year can finally bear fruit, or at the very least sow some potent seeds. Holiday movie: The Polar Express

Like your fellow Fire Signs, you also bask in the glow of having Jupiter and Venus in aspect all month. Helping you expand on your creative output. Mercury Retrograde in your family and home sector may create some confusion, or bring back dormant issues, however, knowing it is part of the corrective process is key. Holiday movie: Arthur Christmas

Aries March 20 – April 19

Aries benefits from Venus and Jupiter in Sagittarius all month. Creating more grace, harmony, and opportunities for long distance travel or engaging in learning stimuli. By 20 November, when Mars ingresses into Scorpio, things really get moving. Mars, your ruler, is back on side, and the greasing of the wheels really begins to pay off. Holiday movie: Die Hard

Taurus April 20 – May 21

June 21 – July 22

Mercury Retrograde will be activating your creative realms, prompting you to relook at, or reframe, ways of communicating and engaging with the “creativity” in life. Also stirring up the area of true loves and passions, new passions or things put aside may come to the surface. The opportunity to get back in touch with activities you truly love is real. Holiday movie: It’s a Wonderful Life

Mercury will be retrograde in your sign, which will be disruptive, but also an opportunity to re-align how you present to the world and what you want to communicate. The sun, also in your sector, creates strength and durability. Come 20 November, Mars your ruler enters Scorpio. From this point you feel invincible. Holiday movie: Collateral Beauty

Sagittarius November 22 – December 22

Having your ruler go retrograde this month isn’t ideal. Don’t get rattled by the heavy, manipulative or obsessive topics that may pop up, especially at work or in daily routines. Health may become an area of deep enquiry and focus. Holiday movie: Home Alone

Having Venus, your ruler, join Jupiter in Sagittarius is nice respite after her journey to the watery depths of Scorpio. Venus will help bring other peoples’ resources together, for your benefit. Once Mars hits Scorpio, this strong, dignified Mars will activate Uranus in Taurus. Any opportunities to innovate, or create autonomy and independence is a blessing in disguise. Holiday movie: Gremlins

Virgo August 23 - September 22

Don’t let any detours or confusing communications in your everyday errands phase you, as your ruler goes retrograde. With Jupiter and Venus in your home sector all month, never is there a better time to get creative and beautify your home or connect with your family. The rewards found here far outweigh the potential hiccups. Holiday movie: Deck the Halls

Libra September 22 – October 23

Confusion around money and self-worth could well be an undercurrent this month, it’s part of an evaluation process, helping purge old ways of thinking and doing. Working alongside this will be the influence of ease and grace, which will occur as you go about your business. Unexpectedly pleasant interactions and gifts in your day to day surroundings, help to ease the fricative disruptions around money and values. Holiday movie: Love Actually
